SUMMARY:Exhibition:Window Installation | Cosmogonic Tattoos
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the University’s Bicentennial in 2017\, artist and professor Jim Cogswell has been invited by the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology and the University of Michigan Museum of Art to create a set of public window installations in response to the objects in their collections. Titled \"Cosmogonic Tattoos\,\" his project uses adhesive vinyl images applied in saturated colors to windows in the two buildings\, highlighting the role of these museums in the life of our campus community. Through close examination of objects separated from us by deep chronological and cultural divides\, imaginatively transformed within our campus context\, this project celebrates the power of architecture\, ornament\, and material objects to shape knowledge\, historical memory\, and cultural identity.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Beauty Meets My Mess: Mixed Media Collage
DESCRIPTION:Re Kielar was born in Chicago’s little Italy neighborhood with her grandparents upstairs and aunt and uncle across the courtyard. Her world was very Italian\, and when she walked outside\, she felt like she was leaving one country and entering another. Ever since she was a child\, she has loved paint and texture and seen beauty in the most unlikely places. Her artwork expresses human emotion through drawing in ink with rough papers\, old book pages\, metal embellishments and natural objects. Each abstract collage is coupled with her poetry\, so each piece is a walk into her soul. She hopes that by sharing that which is broken\, we can find healing spaces that knit our hearts together.

The group of images on exhibit is from a project called On Blue: A Meditation. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Timeless Instants: Still Life Photographs
DESCRIPTION:Originally from Kansas City\, Tina West discovered photography while studying sculpture. She sees her photographs more as paintings\, and her still lifes have powerful cast shadows and frequent light play. Influenced by Gerhardt Richter and surrealism\, West’s images communicate a sense of being\, connecting not only the objects in the photographs\, but also the viewer and the photograph. She draws inspiration from the objects in her vast collection of unique treasures\, and she speaks to their unreserved timelessness with maturity and wonder. All of the images in this exhibit were created using instant film in a 4x5 view camera.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:LACS Exhibition. #NoHumanIsAlien: Germán Andino's The Habit of Silence
DESCRIPTION:Reception: An exhibition of Germán Andino’s graphic history: The Habit of Silence (El hábito de la mordaza) \n \nHonduran journalist and artist Germán Andino’s harrowing work of graphic history depicts gang violence in the city of San Pedro Sula from personal and deeply humane perspective. The installation of his work as a mural in a central public space on our campus is intended to provoke conversation in place of silence. Much reporting on Central America depicts the problem of gangs and violence as far away and impossible to solve\, and the victims and perpetrators of this violence as essentially alien. With the hashtag #NoHumanIsAlien\, the artist and organizers invite reflection on a crisis of violence in Central America that has been exacerbated\, and in important ways created\, by policies originating in the United States. We hope to spark and enrich debate on our campus about current immigration policies\, including the cancellation of Temporary Protected Status for Salvadoran migrants and the asylum claims of tens of thousands of unaccompanied Central American children\, children who have fled the conditions depicted in Andino’s work. \n \nThis exhibit\, a large-scale comic strip along the halls of the second floor of Mason Hall\, will be open for viewing from March 19 - April 6\, 2018. \n \nJoin us for the opening reception with Germán Andino on March 26\, 2018 from 5:00 - 6:30 pm.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Mr. Vignaud's Maps: Unraveling a Cartographic Mystery from the Golden Age of Dutch Cartography
DESCRIPTION:In 1922 the University of Michigan acquired the library of Henry Vignaud\, an American diplomat living in Paris\, whose extensive personal library included thousands of books\, atlases\, maps\, and other publications. Many of Vignaud's maps were extracted from broken atlases\, originally published by the illustrious Hondius and Janssonius publishing houses. Staff in the Clark Library sought to organize these fascinating maps based on their physical characteristics and similarities\, with the ultimate goal of reassembling the original atlases.\n\nThis exhibit and the accompanying online exhibit (https://www.lib.umich.edu/online-exhibits/exhibits/show/rediscoveringvignaud) feature the results of their remarkable findings\, as well as a glimpse into the history of the Golden Age of mapmaking in 17th century Amsterdam.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Interior Streets
DESCRIPTION:Join us March 9\, 3pm\, for a reception and Carl Wilson in conversation with our curator Amanda Krugliak.\n\nThe \"Interior Streets\" exhibition features the work of Detroit artist Carl Wilson\, known for his stark black and white linocut prints. The self-taught artist sees himself as a documentarian of lives easily ignored in a world obsessed with materialism and celebrity. His work frequently highlights not only the strength found in conquering the everyday and mundane\, but also the pain and defeat of those not able to rise to the occasion. His love of film noir and pulp fiction novels from the 1940s and '50s has led him to experiment with minimalist animation and comic book illustration. He embraces the whimsy hidden in the darkness.\n\nCarl is the recipient of a 2013 Kresge Artist Fellowship and is an alumni of the historic Yaddo Artists’ Community. During his residency there he carved the prints for\, and wrote the book\, Her Purse Smelled like Juicyfruit\, a recollection of his mother’s life. Carl was named 2014 guest curator of Detroit’s Carr Center. Also in 2014 Complex Online Magazine named him one of Twenty Detroit Artists You Should Know. He was featured in Essay'd\, a monthly publication about Detroit artists. 2017 sees the release of a comic book\, the first installment of his graphic novel\, Dead and Lost in Detroit.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Exercising the Eye: The Gertrude Kasle Collection
DESCRIPTION:Gallery hours are 11 a.m.–5 p.m. Tuesday–Saturday and 12–5 p.m. Sunday\; galleries are closed on Mondays.\n\nThis exhibition celebrates Gertrude Kasle (1917–2016)\, a key figure in the formation of Detroit’s contemporary art community in the 1960s and 70s. A pioneering female gallerist\, Kasle provided midwest audiences with a venue in which to experience avant-garde art from centers like New York City\, while also supporting and exhibiting regional artists. Featuring a collection of paintings\, works on paper\, and sculptures from the height of the Abstract Expressionist movement through the early twenty-first century\, 'Exercising the Eye' speaks to the relationships Kasle fostered with local\, national\, and international artists and her appreciation for artistic expression and experimentation. Critical voices from the last fifty years include Philip Guston\, Jane Hammond\, Grace Hartigan\, Jasper Johns\, Michele Oka Doner\, and Robert Rauschenberg. The exhibition offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore a dynamic moment in Detroit’s cultural history and insight into Kasle’s love of looking and learning.\n\nLead support for 'Exercising the Eye: The Gertrude Kasle Collection' is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, and the University of Michigan CEW Frances and Sydney Lewis Visiting Leaders Fund.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:New at UMMA: Paul Rand
DESCRIPTION:Throughout the second half of the twentieth century\, pioneering art director and graphic designer Paul Rand (1914–1996) was celebrated for crafting the brand identities of such American corporate icons as ABC\, IBM\, UPS\, and Westinghouse. Rand considered the designer’s task to be the symbolic communication of a company’s character. This recent acquisition presentation features the poster Rand created as part of IBM’s THINK promotional campaign. The design is a rebus\, or visual puzzle\, wherein Rand cleverly transforms the letters of IBM’s logo into pictures. The whimsical use of symbols encourages viewers to interpret—or think—in order to comprehend the company’s intended message that it values “insight\,” “industriousness\,” and “motivation.” The poster is part of a larger recent gift of archival Paul Rand objects donated to UMMA by Franc Nunoo-Quarcoo—professor in the U-M Stamps School of Art and Design and published scholar on Paul Rand—and Maria Phillips.\n\nThis work was recently gifted to UMMA by Maria Phillips and Franc Nunoo-Quarcoo.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Patricia Piccinini: The Comforter
DESCRIPTION:Australian artist Patricia Piccinini’s strange\, hyperreal yet sentimental sculptures are often rooted in her speculative visualizations of future species—beings transformed by\, or even created by\, developments in genetic engineering and technology. On view at UMMA\, \"The Comforter\" presents the likeness of a young girl whose appearance suggests a rare genetic condition causing excessive hair across her face and body. In her lap she tenderly cradles an udder-shaped\, eyeless creature—a possible reference to current experiments in genetically altered milk-producing animals. The encounter staged by the sculpture\, though curious and unexplained\, appears to be one of innocence and intimacy\, and suggests the potential for emotional connection between a diversity of beings. This theme is a common one for Piccinini\, whose work incorporates (often obliquely) ideas and questions about the ethical implications of scientific progress and the conflicts in our culture between the natural and the man-made.\n\nLead support for \"Patricia Piccinini: The Comforter\" is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Institute for the Humanities and the Institute for Research on Women and Gender.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Tim Noble and Sue Webster: The Masterpiece
DESCRIPTION:Since the 1980s\, British artists Tim Noble and Sue Webster have been known for their shadow sculptures built from materials as diverse as scrap metal\, garbage\, taxidermy\, and sex toys. When light is directed at these assemblages\, they project shadows that are exceptionally accurate and intricate representations of other things entirely.\n\n\"The Masterpiece\" (2014) is a shadow self-portrait of the artists created from metal casts of dead vermin they collected and welded together into a ball. From afar the casts appear to be a stunning abstract silver sculpture\; on closer inspection the disturbing menagerie of creatures emerges\, only to change form again—as a shadow on the wall—into a precise and elegant image that is astonishingly different from the objects that create it.\n\nLead support for \"Tim Noble and Sue Webster: The Masterpiece\" is provided by the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, the Susan and Richard Gutow Fund\, and the University of Michigan Institute for the Humanities. Additional generous support is provided by the Richard and Janet Miller Fund.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CSEAS Fridays-at-Noon Lecture Series. Social Media\, Puppets\, and Global Identities in Southeast Asia
DESCRIPTION:Southeast Asians are among the most frequent users of Facebook\, Youtube\, and Twitter\, primarily because of the extreme increase of smart phone availability. Thus\, social media has become a new space for puppet artists and audiences around Southeast Asia to share and talk. Ownership\, heritage\, and identity remain key topics in the virtual space\, just like they do in the physical spaces. This talk connects the local with the global through social media\, recognizing that urban spaces exist not only as built physical structures—but are products of people’s imaginations. It is in these spaces that unique reclamations and promotions of traditional performing arts are happening in diverse ways. \n \n Jennifer Goodlander is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Theatre\, Drama\, and Contemporary Dance at Indiana University where she teaches Asian performance\, theatre history\, and performance studies. She is also Director of the Southeast Asian and ASEAN Studies Program. Her research has been published in numerous journals and edited book collections. Her book\, Women in the Shadows: Gender\, Puppets\, and the Power of Tradition in Bali was published in 2016 by Ohio University Press. She recently completed a second book\, Puppets and Cities: Articulating Identities in Southeast Asia\, which is expected to be published in the fall of 2018. She is also the current president for the Association of Asian Performance. Jennifer performs Balinese shadow puppetry both nationally and internationally.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Psychology Methods Hour: Uncertainty Visualization for Scientific Communication
DESCRIPTION:Understanding uncertainty is necessary to make informed decisions from estimates and predictions. Dr. Kay will outline a variety of approaches to uncertainty visualization and their application to communicating scientific results. He will also touch on a generalized approach to uncertainty visualization—discrete outcomes—that has found success in many contexts\, including medical risk communication\, hurricane path prediction\, and transit prediction. The group will likely discuss the use of modern uncertainty visualization techniques in paper writing (Would readers understand it or be confused? Would reviewers baulk?) and the effect of poor uncertainty communication on scientific reliability (Is there a connection between how we present uncertainty\, the tendency for dichotomous thinking in interpreting results\, and the replication crisis?).

SUMMARY:Presentation:CCN Forum-Brain Network Properties in Aging: A Graph-Theoretic Approach
DESCRIPTION:Growing evidence suggests that healthy aging affects the configuration of large-scale brain networks. Functional brain organization has traditionally been studied using fMRI-based “resting-state” functional connectivity and more recently\, in conjunction with graph-theoretic analyses. The graph-theoretic approach enables characterization of the brain’s connectivity structure and derives measures that assess global and local features that may be important for network function. First\, I will provide a brief introduction to network theory\, focusing on key topological network properties\, such as modularity. Then\, I will present several representative results from recent fMRI investigations showing age differences in global and local network properties. Finally\, I will highlight several methodological aspects that are relevant for functional connectivity and network measures calculations.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Publishing World Literature. The Concept of a Modern German Culture.
DESCRIPTION:This talk focuses on three publishers in the early 20th century: Samuel Fischer in Berlin\, Eugen Diederichs in Jena\, and Kurt Wolff in Leipzig. Samuel Fischer\, who founded the S. Fischer publishing house in 1886 in Berlin\, started out by publishing the young revolutionary literary movement of naturalism\, most importantly Ibsen\, Zola\, and Gerhart Hauptmann. Eugen Diederichs\, who founded his publishing house ten years later in Florenz and Leipzig\, has been viewed very early on as antipode to S. Fischer’s Berlin modernism. His modernist publishing program was inspired by Nietzsche and the neo-Romantic movement. Finally\, Kurt Wolff appeared on the publishing scene in 1913 and supported a new generation of young poets and writers\, best known as Expressionists.\n\nWithin their programs of promoting modern German literature and culture\, all three publishers published European and non-European literature in translation: Fischer\, as mentioned\, Zola and Ibsen\; Diederichs published Tolstoy\, Kierkegaard\, Whitman\, even Chinese philosphy and religion\; Wolff Claudel\, Nikolai Leskov\, and Sinclair Lewis. The presentation explores their competing concepts of world literature within German modernism\, focusing on the tension between the concept of national and European and even global literatures.\n\nMeike Werner is Associate Professor of German and European Studies and director of Graduate Studies in the Department of German\, Russian & East European Studies. In 1996\, she received an interdisciplinary Yale Ph.D. in German. After teaching at Brandeis University\, she joined Vanderbilt University in 1997. Werner has published on German literature\, print media\, intellectual history\, and the history of Germanistik from the eighteenth to the twentieth century. Her teaching spans from the literature of the Middle Ages to early twentieth century modernism and the late twentieth century (post-wall) literature. She also teaches courses in European Studies and Jewish Studies. With a passion for archives\, Werner’s research is often focused on non-canonical forms of writing\, and on unpublished letters and diaries. She also teaches archival methods to graduate students\, many of whom go on to work in literary archives in Germany and elsewhere.\n\n\nIf you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to participate in this event\, please contact Germanic Languages & Literatures at 734-764-8018 or germandept@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:HET Seminars | Gravitational Probes of Dark Matter Physics
DESCRIPTION:Dark matter orchestrates the expansion of the universe and the development of the cosmic web of structure\, yet its identity is unknown. We know that dark matter molds luminous matter into galaxies\, yet the microphysical processes that govern its own creation and evolution remain a mystery. Despite its cosmic importance\, the nature of dark matter remains one of the biggest unsolved problems in fundamental physics. However\, it is one that may be solved with the tools of astronomy. In this talk\, I will show how astronomical observations have shaped our understanding of the microphysical properties of dark matter. I will discuss the exciting prospects for a new generation of astronomical facilities to enable measurements of dark matter physics.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Gaurav Arya
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\n\nMolecular-Scale Modeling of Polymer-Nanoparticle Composites\nThe incorporation of nanoparticles (NPs) into polymers constitutes a powerful strategy for enhancing their thermomechanical properties and for introducing new optical\, electrical\, and magnetic functionalities into the polymers. This talk reviews our ongoing efforts in modeling the mesoscale morphology\, assembly mechanisms\, and thermomechanical properties of polymer nanocomposites. I will begin by discussing Monte Carlo simulations of polymer-grafted shaped NPs to elucidate the role played by polymer grafts in dictating the free-energy landscape\, assembly pathway\, and relative orientation of the NPs in their higher-order aggregates. These results have led to the development of a novel self-assembly strategy for fabricating tunable plasmonic nanojunctions within a polymer thin film. Next\, I will describe an approach involving highthroughput quantitative image analysis and lattice models for inferring dynamic parameters of NP assembly from spatially and temporally disjointed images of composites. Application to shaped\, metallic NPs reveals a cluster-cluster aggregation mechanism of assembly\, where the NPs and their clusters diffuse in a Stokes-Einstein manner and stick with a probability that depends on their size and geometry as well as molecular weight of the surrounding polymer. Finally\, I will discuss the application of atomistic and coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations in predicting thermomechanical properties of polymer nanocomposites\, especially viscoelastic behavior in the context of shock-mitigation materials\, and mechanical flexibility and stability in the context of flexible organic semiconductors.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture: Surprises in Iron Cycling at the Peru Margin
DESCRIPTION:Iron is the most important micronutrient in the ocean\, yet its sources and sinks to and from the ocean are poorly constrained. The GP16 Eastern Pacific Zonal Transect cruise from Peru to Tahiti in 2013 along 12-15°S crossed the large eastern tropical South Pacific oxygen deficient zone (ODZ) in the eastern half of the transect and the East Pacific Rise (EPR) hydrothermal plume in the western half. Both features were expected to be important sources of dissolved iron into the ocean interior. The EPR hydrothermal iron plume was found to extend for several thousands of kilometers around 2500 m\, greatly exceeding prior expectations. In contrast\, there was no significant iron plume in the heart of the ODZ around 300 m that extended beyond the coastal margin\, despite the ODZ penetrating several thousand of kilometers into the interior. Surprisingly\, a deep coastal iron plume in oxygenated waters centered around 2000 m was observed to penetrate >1000 km into the interior. In this talk\, I’ll examine the reasons behind the unexpected high Fe from the oxygenated deep slope relative to the more reducing ODZ above.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Contingent Value of Relationships: The Supply and Demand for Revolving-Door Lobbyists
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nIn seeking representation\, organized interest groups are faced with a variety of lobbyist types to choose from. \"Revolving door\" lobbyists\, or individuals who transition from governmental positions into lobbying for private entities\, are one such type. Revolving-door lobbyists thrive on the value of their relationships. The value of a revolver's services is contingent on the continued presence of friends within the government and the proportion of their friends' influence over policy. As legislatures experience greater turnover\, relationships between lobbyists and incumbents get disrupted. When there are increases in membership size\, the proportional influence of individual lawmakers is diminished. While there are more former legislators available to lobby when legislatures have high turnover or large chamber sizes\, fewer of them enter into lobbying as the value of their relationships with incumbents decreases. When adjusting for this curvilinear effect of legislator supply\, demand for lobbying services helps to govern numbers of revolving-door lobbyists. Other factors\, such as revolving-door laws or the presence of legislative staff\, have little or no effect on rates of revolving. Interests and institutions are found to interact in ways that substantively affect political representation\, and some institutional reforms might help to level the playing field for interests with fewer material resources.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CSAS Lecture Series | The Rise of the Imperial Eunuchate under Emperor Aurangzeb\, 1658-1707
DESCRIPTION:This talk examines the development of the imperial eunuchate during Emperor Aurangzeb's reign (1658-1707). Although the imperial eunuchate played an important role in the Mughal Empire from the middle of the sixteenth century onwards\, Emperor Aurangzeb relied more heavily on eunuchs to press imperial goals than previous Mughal rulers. This dependence increased as he aged and faced political and military challenges on multiple fronts. This talk offers the first serious scholarly attempt to grapple with the complicated and long overlooked role of imperial eunuchs during Aurangzeb's reign and in seventeenth century Mughal India.\n\nMunis D. Faruqui is a historian and Associate Professor in the Department of South and Southeast Asian Studies. He focuses on the Muslim experience in South Asia\, especially during the Mughal period. His books include \"Princes of the Mughal Empire\, 1504-1719\" (Cambridge\, 2012)\, \"Expanding Frontiers in South Asian and World History\" (co-edited with Richard Eaton\, David Gilmartin and Sunil Kumar)(Cambridge\, 2013)\, and \"Religious Interactions in Mughal India\" (co-edited with Vasudha Dalmia)(Oxford\, 2014). Dr. Faruqui is currently working on a book focused on the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb (r. 1658-1707).

SUMMARY:Performance:Tutu《涂图》
DESCRIPTION:Free and Open to the Public \nRegistration is required. https://goo.gl/Hbn8Et\n\nTutu 《涂图》was choreographed for a pure physical dance work and developed from its unique dance language and principles of movement. It deconstructs the way the body moves\, using “release” techniques and four-dimensional spatial recognition to continually explore and investigate how physical movement is influenced by time and space.\n\nAbout Hou Ying (Choreographer)\n\nHou Ying is a pioneer of Chinese contemporary dance. Her Spirit of Night and Kiss and subsequent works earned international attention. In 2001\, she came to the US supported by the Asian Cultural Fund\, and in the following year\, she joined the New York’s Shen Wei Dance Arts Dance Company\, where she promptly became an influential dancer in the group. Winning critical acclaim\, Hou Ying’s choreographic works have been performed in more than ten countries. Critics have described her work as “consisting of whimsical and lonely compositions that explore people’s inner spirit through bodily motion.” \n\nAbout Hou Ying Dance Theater\n\nHou Ying Dance Theater was established in 2009. Its predecessor Horizon Dance Theater was founded by Hou Ying in 2006 in New York. After training and performing in New York\, Hou Ying returned to China as Director of the 2008 Olympic Games show The Picture. After the Olympics\, Horizon Dance Theater’s creative focus moved to Beijing\, where it was officially renamed Hou Ying Dance Theater. Hou Ying Dance Theater gives unique art-styled works to audiences with uncompromising attitude. Its representative works include Night of the Spirit (1996)/ Kiss (1998)/ TuTu (2009)/ Interface (2011)/ Interface2 (2012)/ Infinity (2013)/ The Moment(2015)\, and so on.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents On Blue: Photographic Meditations
DESCRIPTION:Loosely based on the concept of the early 20th century group f64\, the f8collective is composed of female contemporary Chicago photographers who all happen to have strong family ties to Michigan. The group of images on exhibit is from a project called On Blue: A Meditation. Blue is… tranquil pools of clear water\; languid clouds drifting in azure skies\; mood indigo\; cobalt glass\; cerulean blue eyes\; sapphire cornflowers\; poignant music\, emotion and sentiment.
