SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:What makes us feel supported? Unpacking work support perceptions
DESCRIPTION:For more than fifty years\, research has underscored the central role of social support in fostering employee well-being and organizational effectiveness. Yet\, despite its prominence\, relatively little is known about how employees actually form judgments of how supported they feel at work. This lack of clarity creates persistent challenges for scholars attempting to measure the construct and for practitioners striving to cultivate genuinely supportive workplaces. To address this gap\, I will present findings from two studies designed to clarify the nature of social support and illuminate the processes through which employees develop perceptions of it.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Magical Implementation (joint with Jacob Glazer)
DESCRIPTION:A principal needs to decide which of two parties deserves a prize. Each party privately observes the state of nature that determines which of them deserves the prize. The principal presents each party with a text that truthfully describes the conditions for deserving the prize and asks each of them what the state of nature is. The parties do not behave strategically. Each party can lie by activating a cheating procedure which relates to the state and the text given to him. The principal “magically implements” his goal if he can come up with a pair of texts satisfying that in any dispute\, he will recognize the cheater by applying the following rule: the truth is with the party satisfying that if his statement is true\, then the other party (using the cheating procedure) could have cheated and made the statement he is making\, but not the other way around. Several examples are presented to illustrate the concept.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Higher Dimer Models (Combinatorics Seminar)
DESCRIPTION:The \"dimer model\" is the study of random perfect matchings (or \"dimer covers\") of a graph. More generally\, \"n-dimer covers\" are multisets of edges so that every vertex of the graph is covered by exactly n edges (counted with multiplicity). I will discuss an interesting class of probability measures on n-dimer covers which are related to SL(n)-webs. For these measures\, the partition function is given by a determinant\, and one can obtain nice formulas for local edge statistics and correlations.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student Algebraic Geometry: The Valuative Tree\, Part 1
DESCRIPTION:Consider the set of valuations v: C[[x\,y]] -> R \cup \{\infty\}\, normalized so that min(v(x)\, v(y)) = 1. We'll show that this set naturally has the structure of a metric tree. This insight allows us to study the singularities of ideals\, graded systems of ideals\, and plurisubharmonic functions in a unified way. \n\nThis talk will serve as an introduction to the valuative tree\, following Favre-Jonsson. We'll focus on the basic structure of the tree and numerical invariants of valuations with examples.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture: Junjie Dong
DESCRIPTION:Water is fundamental to the Earth’s surface environment. Volcanic outgassing and subduction recycling connect the deep interior with the atmosphere and oceans\, shaping the planet’s long-term habitability. Surface oceans and mantle water are not separate reservoirs\; they are inherently linked to the planet’s thermal and redox evolution.\n\nIn this talk\, I will trace the storage and distribution of water in the mantle. Our earlier work showed that the capacity of the mantle to hold water depends strongly on temperature. A hotter Archean mantle could have held less water than the mantle actually contains today\, suggesting that Earth's early surface might have been covered by larger oceans. The interplay between mantle cooling\, water cycling\, and sea-level stability highlights the importance of the mantle as a dynamic water reservoir. More recently\, we examined how the disproportionation of iron in silicate minerals further regulates mantle water distribution. As the mantle becomes increasingly reduced with depth\, metallic iron stabilizes and reacts with structural water in nominally anhydrous minerals\, producing reduced hydrogen species such as molten FeHx or fluid H₂. This water–iron reaction prevents hydration of mantle silicates and drives hydrogen into metal-rich reservoirs\, thereby altering the form and location of water in the mantle.\n\nTogether\, this research provides a framework for understanding how much water the mantle can store and where it resides. The results suggest that the coevolution of water with Earth’s thermal and redox states governs its deep storage\, distribution\, and cycling\, and\, by extension\, ocean volume\, atmospheric composition\, and the long-term redox evolution of the planet.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Documentation as Political Practice: From Contemporary Nostalgia for the Left to the New Evidentiary Politics in 1970s South India
DESCRIPTION:Attend in person or via Zoom: https://myumi.ch/W6drV\n\nFive decades ago\, the Andhra Pradesh Radical Students Union launched the Go to Villages Campaign\, in which groups of university students were sent to rural Dalit settlements\, where they were tasked with documenting the conditions of life and labor. In that same decade\, anthropologists and sociologists like Clifford Geertz and Joseph Gusfield fundamentally transformed the social sciences by newly centering attention to writing. This talk asks why Telugu South India similarly saw the emergence of new socio-political writing and documentation practices in the 1970s\, highlighting four examples: the Jana Natya Mandali’s (People’s Theatre Troupe) new documentary song-story compositions\; AP State Harijan Conference reports\; documentation produced by the RSU’s “Go to Villages Campaign”\; and the Andhra Pradesh Civil Liberties Committee’s introduction of regular “fact-finding missions.”\n \n Lisa Mitchell is professor of anthropology & history in the Department of South Asia Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. She is the author of *Hailing the State: Indian Democracy between Elections* (Duke University Press 2023\; Permanent Black 2023) and *Language\, Emotion\, and Politics in South India: The Making of a Mother Tongue* (Indiana University Press 2009\; Permanent Black 2010)\, which received the Edward Cameron Dimock Prize in the Indian Humanities. Her research has been supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities\, Wenner-Gren Foundation\, Fulbright\, European Research Council\, American Institute for Indian Studies\, and the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology. In 2020 she was a recipient of the Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching.\n \n This lecture is the keynote address of the CSAS 2025 Graduate Student Conference “New Directions in South Asia: From Nostalgia to New Politics.”\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at tinagrif@umich.edu. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Friday Night AI
DESCRIPTION:Panelists: Prof. Jonathan Brennan\, Hrithik Ravi\nModerator: Prof. Rada Mihalcea\nInteractive Activities: Yara El-Tawil\, Snehal Prabhudesai\nOrganizer: Michigan AI Lab\, in collaboration with the Ann Arbor District Library\nWhen: September 5\, 2025\, 6:30pm – 7:30pm\nWhere: AADL Ann Arbor downtown\,1st Floor Lobby (343 S 5th Ave\, Ann Arbor\, MI 48104)\n\nAI is increasingly embedded into our daily lives\, influencing the way we think\, learn\, and interact with the world. But as we rely on algorithms to help us write\, navigate\, and even make decisions\, several fundamental questions arise: Is AI shaping our habits\, our skills\, and our sense of self? Are we enhancing human capabilities\, or do we end up outsourcing them? Join us for a conversation with experts in AI\, psychology\, and ethics as we explore how AI may be quietly reshaping our cognition\, relationships\, and daily lives. We’ll ask where the line lies between assistance and overreliance\, and what it means to remain human in a machine-augmented world. With interactive activities developed by graduate students Snehal Prabhudesai and Yara El-Tawil.\n\nAbout the speakers:\n\nJonathan R. Brennan is an Associate Professor of Linguistics and Psychology at the Univeristy of Michigan where he directs the Computational Neurolinguistics Laboratory. His research focuses on how the human brain creates and makes sense of language\, drawing on theories and methods from linguistics\, neuroscience\, and computer science. This research is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and National Institutes of Health. He recieved his PhD in 2010 from New York University and completed post-doctoral training at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. He received the Early Career Award from the Society for the Neurobiology of Language in 2019 and is the author\, in 2022\, of \"Language and the Brain: A slim guide to Neurolinguistics.\n\nHrithik Ravi is an AI researcher currently working with Prof. Rada Mihalcea and Prof. Ambuj Tewari to explain why AIs can't solve basic planning and reasoning tasks. He completed his BSE in Computer Science and MS in Machine Learning\, both at the University of Michigan. His previous research mathematically proved how AI generalizes on inputs it didn't see during training\, and was published at a prestigious international AI conference. He aims to start a PhD next year\, and conduct deep research to develop a better\, rigorous understanding of AI's capabilities and limitations. You can follow him on Twitter (@r1pster7).\n\nModerator: Rada Mihalcea is the Janice M. Jenkins Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Michigan and the Director of the Michigan Artificial Intelligence Lab. Her research interests are in natural language processing\, with a focus on multimodal processing and computational social sciences. She is an ACM Fellow\, a AAAI Fellow\, and served as ACL President (2018-2022 Vice/Past). She is the recipient of a Sarah Goddard Power award (2019) for her contributions to diversity in science\, and the recipient of a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers awarded by President Obama (2009).

SUMMARY:Other:Literature's Refuge: Rewriting the Mediterranean Borderscape
DESCRIPTION:In 1923\, the Greco-Turkish Population Exchange uprooted and swapped nearly two million Christians and Muslims\, “pacifying” the so-called Near East through ethnic partition and refugeehood. This imposition of borders not only uprooted peoples from their place in the world\; it also displaced many of their stories from a place in world literature. In Literature’s Refuge\, William Stroebel recovers and weaves together work by fugitive writers\, oral storytellers\, readers\, copyists\, editors\, and translators dispersed by this massive “unmixing” of populations and the broader border logic that it set in motion. Stroebel argues that two complementary forces emerged as a template for the Eastern Mediterranean’s cultural landscape: the modern border\, which reshuffled people through a system of filters and checkpoints\; and modern philology\, which similarly reshuffled their words and works. Philologists and publishers defined modern literature by picking apart\, extracting\, reformatting\, or dispossessing refugee and diasporic texts across a racialized borderscape—a gray zone of semi-inclusion and semi-exclusion\, semimobility and immobility.\n\nStroebel reaches into the chinks and crannies of this borderscape to reconstitute the rich textual geography between Greek Orthodoxy and Sunni Islam\, between Greek-script\, Arabic-script\, and Latin-script literary traditions at the edges of Europe and the Middle East. Doing so\, he offers a new methodological toolkit for rewriting the modern borderscapes of world literature.\n\nWilliam Stroebel is assistant professor of Modern Greek and Comparative Literature at the University of Michigan.

SUMMARY:Performance:David Zerkel\, tuba: \"Animal Ditties\"
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Professor David Zerkel\, tuba\, with:\nLiz Ames\, piano\nJason Fettig\, narrator\nTim Zerkel\, illustrator\n\nDavid and Liz will perform a recital that is thematically centered around our friends from the animal kingdom. The program will begin with Jean-Michel DeFaye's *Suite Marine*\, a depiction of various creatures from the sea. Jason Fettig\, Director of Bands at the SMTD and budding thespian\, will join us to narrate Anthony Plog's *Animal Ditties IX*\, which is a colorful work based on short poems by Ogden Nash\, widely considered to be America's Poet Laureate of Light Verse. Closing the first half will be the world premiere of *\"Woof!\"*\, by hornist\, composer\, and SMTD alum James Naigus. This piece is a clever depiction of the characteristics of seven dog breeds.\n\nThe second half is dedicated to the evening's protagonist. Written in 1960\, *Effie the Elephant\, Suite no. 1* by Alec Wider is a relatively early work for solo tuba depicting Effie in pursuit of various human endeavors: singing a lullaby\, going folk dancing\, and falling in love\, etc. David decided that Effie needed a rebrand\, and perhaps to get out a little more: we present *Effie Swipes Left*\, *Effie Goes Clubbing*\, *Effie goes to Therapy*\, *Effie Goes to the DMV*\, *Effie Adopts a Puppy*\, and *Effie Gets Tipsy*. We're grateful to the University of Michigan for funding this commission\, and are thrilled to perform this world premiere of Jim Stephenson's *The Further Adventures of Effie the Elephant*. Jim is a wonderful composer and recovering brass player\, and this caricature is as charming as it is clever.\n\nThis will be a multimedia event\, as David's much more talented brother\, Tim\, has created an illustration for each of the 32 (short) movements on the program. \n\nThis will be a family friendly evening of storytelling and a delightfully innocuous introduction to the tuba as a solo voice.

SUMMARY:Performance:The Gibson Brothers
DESCRIPTION:“The Gibson Brothers have built their legacy upon a sound that salutes the past while still pushing forward.” –Rolling Stone\n\nThere’s a reason why Ricky Skaggs pulled Eric and Leigh Gibson off the stage at the Ryman two decades ago and offered to produce their debut record. The same thing that led David Ferguson and Grammy Award winning producer and Black Keys frontman Dan Auerbach to co-write and produce their 14th album “Mockingbird” (2018) and release it on his own label Easy Eye Sound alongside cultural icons such as Hank Williams Jr. and Dr. John: The Gibson Brothers are the real deal. They can pick. They can sing .And they can write a damn good country song. They’ve won about every bluegrass award you can name and released albums on almost every premier Americana label you can think of including Sugar Hill and Rounder\, and\, if that’s not enough\, their songs have been recorded by bluegrass legends no less than Del McCoury.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:2025 Second Year Studio Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:August 18 - October 24\, 2025Exhibition Reception: September 11\, 3-5 p.m.\n\"In their second year\, Stamps students complete a major milestone: Second Year Studio (SYS). It’s a course where\, per the syllabus\, students 'develop the capacity to work independently by identifying\, exploring\, and pursuing a single independent project that involves multiple iterations.' Each student takes their own path\, encountering questions that can shape the direction of their creative practice—how do I manage my time? How much constraint vs. freedom do I thrive on? What subject matter do I care about most deeply? How do my ideas about my future goals intersect with the work I want to make now? At the end of the semester\, students formally report on their experience in a presentation called the Sophomore Review\, and a faculty panel offers individualized feedback. \nUntil now\, the classroom studios and review rooms have been the only place to catch a glimpse of the art and design work resulting from this pivotal course. Last year\, Associate Dean for Academic Programs Rebecca Strzelec proposed something new: an exhibition installed throughout the Art &amp\; Architecture Building during the summer that would celebrate Second Year Studio work and help to welcome the community back in the Fall. This inaugural 2025 Second Year Studio Exhibition showcases our rising third-years and transfer students\, and invites first-years and other newcomers to explore both the building\, and the creative possibilities ahead. The show features 44 students who have volunteered to participate\, yet it honors every Stamps major who reaches the SYS milestone. \nThe pieces on view span a wide array of media and capture a specific moment in each maker’s path—experiments in previously unfamiliar methods\, emergent passions\, creative risks taken\, iterations and reiterations\, and the seeds of so much future work.\"\n- Sally Clegg\, Lecturer and Student Exhibitions Coordinator\nExhibiting Artists and Designers\n\nRobin Beaney\nAdi Behar\nDavid Byun\nZoë Corley\nChloe Dennis\nViktoriya Finyak\nMaria Elena García-Murguía\nElisa Gasser\nOlivia Glynn\nRoe Halbert\nNadav Havilio\nDee Holmes\nRuby Hough\nUrvi Joshi\nEunice Kim\nHannah Kryzhan\nBen Levitsky\nJoyce Liu\nKatelyn Ma\nAlexandria Mainor\nErin Malone\nSummer Mansi\nCheyenne Moore\nElla Moxon\nShafiq Muqit\nAlex Nguyen\nAnna Noh\nLeanna Mokihana Paik\nEva Park\nMichelle Peng\nEliana Pettigrew\nZainab Rahmani\nOlivia Reed\nSky Roberts\nZachary Sebestyen\nOliver Lee St Cyr\nSophie Stillwagon\nVeronica Weinberg\nCaitlin Weingarden\nNala Arielle White\nAriel Williams\nSilas Williams\nKatherine Xu\nJoy Yang\n

DESCRIPTION:Join us for Beyond Survival\, an exhibition of works by incarcerated artists in Michigan presented by PCAP co-founder Janie Paul and the Flint Institute of the Arts. The exhibit opens May 30th and runs through September 14th. \n\nThe pieces span nearly 30 years\, many of them having been featured in our Annual Exhibition.\n\n\"Through drawings\, paintings\, and sculptures made with simple materials\, artists expose the harsh realities of incarceration while imagining life beyond prison. SUMMARY:Other:Read and Look | Cleo and Cornelius: A Tale of Two Cities and Two Kitties
DESCRIPTION:In this special program just for our younger visitors (ages 4–8)\, we’ll read a kid-friendly book and explore a related part of the Kelsey Museum’s galleries. This is a great way to discover the ancient world and connect our daily lives to families in the past. \n\nIn *Cleo and Cornelius*\, adventurous Cleo and couch potato Cornelius live in ancient Egypt\, where cats are worshiped like gods and goddesses. After Cornelius accidentally boards a boat departing on a voyage across the sea\, the two felines find themselves in the faraway city of Rome\, a place where dogs are treated like kings. In Rome\, the activities never end! Cleo and Cornelius race chariots\, play games\, perform in a theater\, and more. Do they even want to return to Egypt? A spin on Aesop’s classic fable “The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse\,” *Cleo and Cornelius* teems with hungry hippos\, toga-clad dogs\, and dancing cat mummies\, bringing new excitement to a timeless tale.\n\nThis event is free and open to all visitors. If you have any questions or concerns regarding accessing this event\, please visit our accessibility page at https://myumi.ch/zwPkd or contact the education office by calling (734) 647-4167. We ask for advance notice as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Performance:THE NOISE CAME FROM HERE: A Homage to the Old West Side
DESCRIPTION:Master of Fine Arts in Dance candidate Kiana “KC” Cook and the University of Michigan Department of Dance present THE NOISE CAME FROM HERE: A Homage to the Old West Side in two unique site-specific performances. The first will be held at 7:30 PM on Saturday\, September 6th in the Dance Performance Studio Theatre (1000 Baits Dr\, Ann Arbor)\, followed by a second performance at 3:00 PM on Sunday\, September 7th at Albert Wheeler Park (200 Depot St\, Ann Arbor)* (*Rain location: Dance Performance Studio Theatre\, 1000 Baits Dr). The performance runs for one hour with no intermission. Tickets for the September 6th show are free and available at the door\, while the September 7th park performance requires no tickets. The event is ADA accessible and suitable for all ages.\n\nTHE NOISE CAME FROM HERE is a living tribute to Ann Arbor’s Historically Black “Old West Side”—a neighborhood where Black families built deep roots before systemic gentrification altered the community. The term noise in this work is both literal and symbolic: a celebration of presence and a refusal to be erased. Developed in direct conversation with the Community Leadership Council of the Dunbar Tower\, who are tied to the neighborhood’s legacy\, the performance honors their stories through dance\, sound\, and collective remembrance.\n\nThe performances feature Buff1\, Anyse\, Lobo\, Banga\, Jerwaun “Renegade” Suddun\, Rachel “Prysm” Johnson\, and student artists Ava K. Garland\, Hope Hanna-Casupang\, Gabriele Shepheard\, David Kim\, Bobby Currie\, and Erika Siblesz with original lighting design by Scott Crandall.\n\nTHE NOISE CAME FROM HERE is made possible through generous support from University of Michigan-Ann Arbor’s School of Music\, Theatre\, & Dance\, and the Arts Initiative. \n

SUMMARY:Performance:Gabe Lee // King Margo
DESCRIPTION:Fresh songwriting out of Nashville\n\nEqual parts classic songwriter and modern-day storyteller\, Gabe Lee has built his own bridge between country\, folk and rock. Storytelling has been an anchor of Lee's music since the very beginning. Raised by Taiwanese parents in Nashville\, TN\, he left home during his teenage years and headed to Indiana\, where he obtained college degrees in literature and journalism. Lee launched his career as a genre-bending musician after returning to Tennessee\, quickly progressing from dive bar gigs to high-profile opening slots (including shows with Jason Isbell\, Los Lobos\, Molly Tuttle\, and other artists who\, like him\, blurred the lines between roots-rock\, country\, and other forms of American folk music) to his own headlining shows. Throughout it all\, he drew upon the narrative skills he'd sharpened as a student. If albums like Honky-Tonk Hell and The Hometown Kid often unfolded like autobiographical entries from his road journal\, then Drink the River shows an even broader range of his storytelling abilities. Lee isn't just writing songs about himself\; he's writing songs about all of us. And maybe\, in doing so\, he can bring us a little closer together. \n\nKing Margo is a magnetic alt-country/Americana act based in Nashville\, TN. Their album “Waters Rise” is filled with what Saving Country Music proclaims as “interesting and curious textures throughout\, unique and unexpected approaches to songs\, and inspired songwriting graced by soaring performances.” The heart of the group is duo Lucciana Costa and Rachel Coats\, though they often bring their friends along for a full band experience. King Margo is a road-tested band through and through\, and they are known for putting on a high-energy show complimented by thoughtful songwriting.

SUMMARY:Performance:Unearthing Three American Composers: Hsu-Cho Violin-Piano Duo
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a program presented by Dr. Sookkyung Cho (piano) & Zenas Hsu (violin). This guest artist recital will feature Rogers' Sonata for Piano and Violin\, Cole's Sonata for Piano and Violin\, and two transcribed songs by Goldmark - \"Ode\" and \"I have done\, Put by the Lute\". \n\nRogers\, daughter of English composer John Barnett\, was a successful opera singer. She moved on to composing and teaching in Boston\, MA\, including serving as faculty at the New England Conservatory of Music. She also held frequent house concerts and gathered musicians and friends around her\, including Amy Beach and George Chadwick. Cole\, a native of Michigan state\, likewise led a fruitful life\, very much in the educational space - he was an advocate and leader in various compositional\, educational and musical societies\, including the Music Teachers National Association and the New York Manuscript Society. Born in New York\, Goldmark was equally known as a composer and pianist\, and notably was a student of Dvorak\, and taught Aaron Copland and George Gershwin. He served as the head of composition at the Juilliard School of Music in its early decades of founding.

SUMMARY:Tours:Sunday Drop-In Tour | Greek and Roman Mythology
DESCRIPTION:Many of us have read stories or seen movies featuring gods\, goddesses\, and heroes from Greek and Roman mythology. But how was this mythology incorporated into the lives of ancient people? In this tour\, we’ll look at such artifacts as vases\, lamps\, and sarcophagi—featuring images of Athena\, Herakles\, Dionysus\, and more—and consider how this mythology was experienced by everyday people.\n\nThis event is free and open to all visitors.

DESCRIPTION:*Please Note: The performance start time is now 3:00 pm.*\n\nMaster of Fine Arts in Dance candidate Kiana “KC” Cook and the University of Michigan Department of Dance present THE NOISE CAME FROM HERE: A Homage to the Old West Side in two unique site-specific performances. \n

SUMMARY:Performance:Shemekia Copeland
DESCRIPTION:“The greatest blues singer of her generation” —Washington Post\n\nShemekia Copeland possesses one of the most instantly recognizable and deeply soulful roots music voices of our time. The multi-GRAMMY nominee is beloved and honored worldwide for the fearlessness\, honesty and humor of her revelatory songs\, as well as for her winning\, engaging personality. The Chicago Tribune says\, “Copeland is the greatest female blues vocalist working today. There’s no mistaking the majesty of her instrument\, nor the ferocity of her delivery.”\n\n On Copeland’s new album\, Blame It On Eve\, the songs all hit hard\, with jaw-dropping performances that instantly take hold and command repeated listening. “There’s serious business on the new album\,” Copeland says\, “but there are a lot of smiles here too\, a lot of joyous moments. It’s my blues for sure but it’s the brighter side. Issues are always important to me\, but so is rocking\, dancing and just having fun. And that’s something we all can all agree on.”\n\nWith Blame It On Eve\, Copeland embarks on what she calls “a vacation from all the heaviness.” Blame It On Eve contains plenty of Copeland’s trademark bold and courageous songs\, but here Copeland is also looking to unplug from the weight of the world. “My last three records have dealt with breaking news\,” she says. “This record is for people like me who want a break from the news.”

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Student Dissertation Defense - Recovering the missing links: from genomic signatures to virus-host interaction networks
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \n\"In a little more than a century\, viruses have emerged from being invisible to human knowledge to being recognized as ubiquitous biological forces shaping microbial ecosystems worldwide. Next-generation sequencing has accelerated virus discovery at an unprecedented rate\, revealing vast viral diversity in the microbial world. However\, this pace of discovery has created a critical knowledge gap: who do those viruses infect? This dissertation addresses this fundamental challenge by demonstrating that viral genomes contain detectable signatures of microbial host adaptation. Those genomic \"battle scars\" can be computationally decoded to predict virus-host interactions. Through analysis of these evolutionary fingerprints\, this work shows that viral dependence on host cellular machinery creates measurable genomic signals that reflect specific adaptation patterns to their hosts. Leveraging these insights\, a machine learning model was developed that predicts virus-host interactions with 92% accuracy. This tool\, released as an open-source Python package\, enables the mapping of virus-host interaction networks directly from sequence data. Application of this approach reveals the network architectures underlying virus-host interactions\, with computational predictions compared with experimental approaches. Taken together\, this body of work demonstrates how genomic signatures can be leveraged to predict virus-host ecological relationships\, offering a new method for mapping virus-host networks from sequence data.\"

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:HEP-Astro Seminar | Progress in Directional Dark Matter Detection Using Nitrogen Vacancy Centers in Diamond
DESCRIPTION:Direct searches for weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) are rapidly approaching the “neutrino fog\,” where solar neutrinos become an irreducible background. Overcoming this limit requires directional sensitivity to distinguish dark matter-induced nuclear recoils from neutrino events. Towards this goal\, we are developing a diamond-based directional detector\, where nuclear recoils generate ~10-100 nm damage tracks that can be identified and reconstructed using nitrogen-vacancy (NV) quantum sensors. I will describe recent advances toward this goal\, including the detection of single-ion-induced damage tracks in nitrogen-rich diamond\, the development of light-sheet quantum diamond microscopy for volumetric strain imaging\, and progress in modeling recoil cascades with ML-accelerated molecular dynamics. In addition\, I will report preliminary spin measurements on NVs associated with recoil tracks\, which may provide a basis for quantum-sensing-assisted track discrimination. Taken together\, these results illustrate a path forward towards a scalable\, directional dark matter detector capable of probing beyond the neutrino fog.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:RCGD Fall Seminar Series on the Science of Social Relationships: Amie Gordon
DESCRIPTION:Amie Gordon of the University of Michigan joins the RCGD Fall Seminar Series on the Science of Social Relationships.\n\nDespite decades of research\, relationship scientists have yet to fully unpack the mysteries of dating and compatibility. We still cannot robustly predict the formation and dissolution of any given romantic relationship. Furthermore\, the researchers who study attraction and initial dating tend to have little overlap with those who study the maintenance of established relationships\, leaving many unanswered questions about trajectories of relationships over time. In this talk\, Amie Gordon will discuss how relationship science can leverage modern technology to gather large-scale data on the formation\, maintenance\, and dissolution of romantic relationships. One project leverages dating apps—the most common way for couples to meet today—to gain new insights into relationship formation. In collaboration with Elizabeth Bruch\, a U-M sociologist\, her lab has spent the past two years developing Revel\, a dating app designed for science\, not profit. A second project uses intensive longitudinal methods to track moment-to-moment relationship experiences with the goal of better understanding the dynamic patterns of change in relationship quality and stability over time. This talk showcases how technological advances provide creative opportunities to track the full lifecycle of relationships at an unprecedented scale and shed new light on the dynamics of relationships from beginning to end.\n\nAmie M. Gordon is an associate professor of social psychology at the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor where she directs the Well-being\, Health\, and Interpersonal Relationships Lab (WHIRLab). Her research uses a multimethod approach to understand the affective\, social cognitive\, and biological factors that shape our closest relationships. She is particularly interested in how relationship partners influence each other in the moment and over time. A main goal of her research is to better understand how people can maintain high-quality relationships. Her research is driven by the belief that our interpersonal relationships underscore every aspect of our lives\, influencing the health and well-being of individuals\, families\, groups\, and organizations. Dr. Gordon received her PhD in Social-Personality Psychology from UC Berkeley and her BA in Psychology from UCLA. Prior to beginning her position at the University of Michigan\, she completed postdoctoral fellowships at UC Berkeley and UCSF\, as well as a research scientist position at UCSF.\n\n\nAbout the Series:\n\nHumans are social animals and from the earliest days of life\, are dependent on the quality of social relationships with significant others: family\, kin\, friends\, and a growing social network of online acquaintances. But\, how do we conduct research and come to understand the social processes transpiring in these significant social connections with others? What are the consequences for individual development and mental health outcomes of having close intimate relationships in one’s life? There is also a darker side to some relationships in the form of violence\, aggression\, and conflict. How do we study these processes? Social media and artificial intelligence have opened up new ways of thinking about “what is a social relationship?” and how many of these “friends” can one truly have.\n\nThe speakers for this series will focus on different types of social relationships\, spanning family and parent-child relationships\, friendships\, peer networks\, romantic relationships\, attachment relationships\, and the use of online media to maintain social connections. Although several speakers are senior scholars with extensive research backgrounds in the field\, many are junior scholars who are traversing new paths into the science of social relationships. Please join us Mondays to learn more about the exciting field of social relationships!\n\nThese events will be held Mondays from 3:30 to 5.\nIn person: ISR Thompson 1430\nOrganized by Brenda Volling and Richard Gonzalez.\n\nAs permissions allow\, seminars are later posted to our YouTube playlist.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:How Health Care Civil Rights Work
DESCRIPTION:If discrimination drives health disparities\, then civil rights protections in healthcare settings could help. But bringing our anti-discrimination laws and implementing structures into healthcare operations and insurance is difficult. Organizational practices\, data systems\, professional norms\, and the broader structures of the American political and healthcare systems shape the possibilities of addressing health discrimination. This talk explores how health care civil rights implementation works\, particularly what makes it work when it works\, and why it so often fails. The talk is based on Professor Kirkland’s newly released book\, Health Care Civil Rights: How Discrimination Law Fails Patients (University of California Press\, 2025)\, which is available open access at https://luminosoa.org/books/m/10.1525/luminos.226.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:The HOMFLY Polynomial of a Forest Quiver
DESCRIPTION:The HOMFLY polynomial of a link is a two-variable link invariant which was introduced in the 1980s. It can be defined recursively using a skein relation and specializes to other link invariants such as the Alexander polynomial and Jones polynomial. In this talk\, we will begin by describing how to associate a link to a plabic graph. Then\, we will describe how to recursively compute the HOMFLY polynomial of these links in the case where the quiver Q_G associated to the plabic graph is an orientation of a forest. Finally\, we will discuss a closed form expression for the HOMFLY polynomial of such links where the coefficients are expressed in terms of independent sets of the quiver.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Exploring the Mind | Artificial Intelligence: How We Got Here\, How It Works\, And What It Means for Our Understanding of the Human Mind
DESCRIPTION:Can AI systems like ChatGPT help us understand the human mind\, or are they \"alien intelligences”—technological tools that leverage big data to imitate humans? This talk aims to answer this question\, tracing the history of how AI arrived at this point (spoiler: it wasn't just a sudden development in the tech industry)\, and dispelling some common misconceptions along the way. I'll argue that modern AI is far more than a tool. It is a source of stunning new scientific hypotheses about the nature of the human mind\, and will revolutionize not just technology\, but the psychological\, cognitive and brain sciences as well.\n\nAbout the speaker: Richard Lewis is the John R. Anderson Collegiate Professor of Psychology\, Linguistics and Cognitive Science at the University of Michigan. The aim of Dr. Lewis's research is to develop computational theories of mind. His work focuses on human language processing\, human decision making\, and reinforcement learning in artificial intelligence. He received his PhD in computer science from Carnegie Mellon University\, and has been on the faculty at Michigan for 25 years.\n\nNote that this talk is free and open to the public and will take place at the Ann Arbor District Library's Downtown Branch.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Pfaffians as τ -functions of the BKP hierarchy: a constructive parametrization of complex pure spinors de E. Cartan
DESCRIPTION:It is well known that τ -functions of KP hierarchy are parameterized by points in Sato’s Universal Grassmannian manifold (UGM). These τ -functions have Schur expansions with coefficients satisfying Plücker relations. In this talk we will show that all τ -functions of BKP hierarchy can be written as Pfaffians of skew-symmetric matrices. These τ -functions are parameterized by points in the universal orthogonal Grassmannian manifold (UOGM). They have natural Schur-Q expansions with coefficients satisfying Cartan-Plücker relations. As a byproduct this parameterization gives a constructive description for complex pure spinors de E. Cartan. As an application\, we reprove a theorem due to A. Alexandrov which states that τ -functions of KdV satisfy BKP up to rescaling of the time parameters by 2. We prove this by showing that the KdV hierarchy can be viewed as 4-reduction of the BKP hierarchy. This interpretation gives complete characterization for the KdV orbits nside the BKP hierarchy. This talk is based on preprint arXiv:2210.03307.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:\"Rising Wealth Concentration and Disparities in Social Outcomes Across the United States\"
DESCRIPTION:Join the Stone Center for Inequality Dynamics as we host Manuel Schechtl\, Assistant Professor of Public Policy\, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill\, and 2025-2026 Visiting Fellow. Dr. Schechtl is a social demographer studying the creation\, persistence\, and reproduction of inequality\, poverty\, and mobility\, with substantive interests in wealth and its intersection with public policy. His research encompasses the quantitative analysis of survey data\, administrative records\, and experimental data. Currently\, Manuel is focusing on multiple facets of wealth inequality and accumulation\, with a particular focus on the impact of inheritances and inheritance taxes.\n\nAbstract: “Wealth inequality in the United States has reached heights not seen since the Gilded Age\, renewing concerns that skyrocketing disparities in economic power may challenge the basic social functioning of society. Yet empirical research linking rising wealth inequality to changes in social outcomes\, be it democratic erosion\, collapsing communities\, or increasing social immobility\, remains scarce. Beyond data limitations\, trying to study wealth inequality as a determinant rather than an outcome comes with substantive challenges for establishing causality. The talk outlines this broader research agenda\, including the development of a shift-share instrument for wealth inequality.”

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Information Spreads (with Antonio Falato and Jasmine Xiao)
DESCRIPTION:We propose a financially-driven business cycle propagation mechanism in which firm credit spreads arise from default concerns under incomplete information. Investors learn from public information and adjust expectations about firm creditworthiness downward in response to a deterioration in the profit outlook or increase in uncertainty. Empirically\, we show that spreads and real outcomes -- both at the aggregate and firm-level -- respond predictably to the new information summarized in professional forecast revisions. Quantitatively\, the model explains the high level and variation of credit spreads and the patterns in responding to public information\, and establishes a novel amplification mechanism whereby credit spreads transmit changes in public information and its uncertainty to investment and the real economy.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Tuesday Seminar Series: 1) Uncovering the Early Evolution of Canids from an Exceptional Skeleton of Mesocyon// 2) Reducing Plastic Waste in the Lab (Pt. 1!)
DESCRIPTION:This week\, we have two speakers for our Tuesday seminar! \nPlease read details below: \n\n1) Dr. Anne Kort\, Michigan Society of Fellows Postdoctoral Scholar\n\nTitle: Uncovering the Early Evolution of Canids from an Exceptional Skeleton of Mesocyon\n\nDescription: Living members of the dog family\, including wolves\, foxes\, and our own household pets\, are well-adapted for running fast and far\, with long legs and stabilized joints. These skeletal adaptations appear in many fossil relatives of dogs\, especially in the last 15 million years when grasslands became more dominant on the landscape. But what did the earliest members of the dog family look like? Mesocyon coryphaeus is an early relative of modern dogs that lived in the Pacific Northwest of North America approximately 30 million years ago. Although this species has been known from skulls and teeth for over a century\, the skeleton of Mesocyon has been essentially unknown through this time. A spectacular fossil of Mesocyon was discovered by John Day Fossil Beds National Monument staff in the late 1980s. After over 500 hours of preparation work on and off throughout the following decades\, the near-complete skeleton of this animal was fully uncovered in 2022. This skeleton is close to a coyote in size but has short\, robust limbs and relatively flexible joints\, suggesting that Mesocyon was an ambush predator\, unlike most modern canids.\n\n2) Dr. Jill Myers\, biodiversity lab manager\n\nTitle: Reducing Plastic Waste in the Lab (Pt. 1!) \n\nDescription: Globally\, research labs generate more than 12 billion pounds of plastic waste per year. Single-use plastic pipette tips are one major source of this waste. In this short talk\, I will introduce our new pipette tip washing machine and share plans for its current and future use in EEB and the anticipated impacts.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Innovation and the Great Divergence
DESCRIPTION:The Great Divergence of GDP per capita between the leading regions of Europe and China occurred around 1700 as a period of positive growth in Britain and the Netherlands coincided with a period of negative growth in the Yangzi Delta. The positive trend in northwest Europe was a continuation of a process that began in the fourteenth century\, while the negative trend in the Yangzi Delta continued a pattern of alternating periods of growing and shrinking\, but reaching lower levels of income. TFP growth was strongly positive in Britain after the Black Death\, in the Netherlands during the Dutch Golden Age and again in Britain from the mid-seventeenth century. Although TFP growth was positive in China during the Northern Song dynasty\, it was predominantly negative during the Ming and Qing dynasties\, in the Yangzi Delta as well as in China as a whole.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:2025 Ziwet Lectures
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, September 9\, 4 pm\, East Hall 1324: Science 2.0 - Evolving the Scientific Method in the Age of AI\nThere will be a reception after the Tuesday Colloquium in the Math Upper Atrium.\n\nWednesday\, September 10\, 4 pm\, East Hall 1360: Matrix-Mimetic Tensor Algebra: Optimal Decompositions and Equivariant Learning\n\nThursday\, September 11\, 4 pm\, East Hall 4448: From Big Data to Right Data: Information-Theoretic Optimal Experimental Design\n\n\nTuesday\, September 9\, 4 pm\, East Hall 1324: Science 2.0 - Evolving the Scientific Method in the Age of AI\nThis lecture addresses the historical trade-off between interpretable but expertise-dependent deductive models and scalable but non-interpretable data-driven approaches by introducing hybrid AI frameworks that transcend this divide. We present AI-Descartes (generator-verifier paradigm)\, AI-Hilbert (unified hypothesis generation and testing)\, and AI-Noether (algebraic-geometric theory revision via abductive reasoning) as transformative approaches to mathematical model discovery. These frameworks advocate for conceptual evolution of the scientific method toward deeper AI integration in pursuing both interpretable and universal models.\n\nWednesday\, September 10\, 4 pm\, East Hall 1360: Matrix-Mimetic Tensor Algebra: Optimal Decompositions and Equivariant Learning\nThis lecture introduces a novel tensor-tensor algebra that preserves essential matrix-algebraic properties while overcoming limitations of conventional tensorial frameworks\, culminating in an Eckart-Young-like theorem that resolves a decades-long open problem in tensor analysis. We demonstrate how this framework enables seamless retrofitting of existing computational workflows (Hamiltonian neural networks\, tensor Graph Convolutional Networks) and extends to tensor group symmetry theory for equivariant learning applications. This work opens pathways to new tensorial algebras that can reveal deeper patterns in high-dimensional information previously inaccessible to traditional methods.\n\nThursday\, September 11\, 4 pm\, East Hall 4448: From Big Data to Right Data: Information-Theoretic Optimal Experimental Design\nThis lecture addresses the modern paradox where unprecedented data accumulation capabilities make selective identification of informative samples more critical than ever for meaningful model development. We review theoretical foundations of experimental design within inverse problems frameworks\, examining strategies for well-posed and ill-posed settings while establishing approaches for design preferences\, budget allocation\, and risk assessment. Through information-theoretic principles\, we demonstrate how optimal experimental design creates a paradigm shift from data volume to information content\, with transformative implications for resource-constrained scientific methodology.\n\nDr. Lior Horesh is a Principal Research Scientist\, Master Inventor and a Senior Manager of the ‎Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science (formerly Mathematics of AI) department at IBM Research. His department’s mission is to approach some of the big ‎challenges the field of AI is facing\, from a principled mathematical angle. Additionally\, Dr. Horesh ‎holds an adjunct Associate Professor position at the Computer Science department of Columbia ‎University where he teaches graduate level Advanced Machine Learning and Quantum Computing ‎courses. Dr. Horesh Received his Ph.D. in 2006 from UCL and joined IBM in 2009.\n\nThe Ziwet Lectures were established in 1934 through a bequest from Professor Ziwet\, Chair of the UM Department of Mathematics from 1888-1925. He stipulated that his estate “should be used for the promotion of scientific work.” The Ziwet lectures have been one of the most prestigious lecture series in the department.
