SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture: Humans & Climate Change: Insights from the African Paleoclimate Record
DESCRIPTION:Humanity has an intimate relationship with the Earth’s climate system: we drive climate changes\, and conversely\, must respond and adapt to shifts in the climate. Our ancestors likely experienced similar interactions\, but our knowledge of how\, or whether\, early humans migrated or shifted their settlement patterns in response to climatic shifts is hindered by limitations of both the archaeological and paleoclimate record. In this talk\, I will present ways in which we have addressed this issue using biomarker-based reconstructions of aridity in both west and east Africa. We have found compelling evidence that major shifts in early human behavior corresponded with humid/arid transitions\, highlighting the role of rapid climate change in driving migration and lifestyle shifts.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Biophysics Doctoral Students - Efrosini Artikis and Jeffrey Maltas
DESCRIPTION:Efrosini Artikis\, Biophysics Doctoral Candidate “Exploration of pH dependent NMR chemical shift perturbations in peptides and proteins” \n\nAbstract: Abstract:\nIn studying pH-mediated biological processes\, NMR is an optimal experimental approach as the sensitivity of NMR chemical shifts to both molecular composition and local environment allows for a comprehensive description of pH-dependent effects. Currently\, empirical and semi-empirical chemical shift predictors are largely insensitive to extreme pH conditions and compute absolute shifts only at physiological pH. Aiming to better understand the manifestation of pH in these NMR observables\, we utilize a combination of MD and DFT calculations for the ab initio computation of NMR chemical shift perturbations (CSP) of model tri-peptides. By altering the protonation state of the titratable residue present in the peptides\, we are able to recapitulate pH effects observed in experimental NMR measurements. Furthermore\, we employ a similar methodology to examine electrostatically driven interactions in proteins. We anticipate that the computation of the pH-dependent CSPs for these systems\, will lead to a generalized protocol through which these observables may be computed for a variety of proteins involved in pH-mediated processes.\n\nand \n\n“Jeffrey Maltas\, Biophysics Doctoral Candidate\, “Collateral sensitivity in Enterococcus faecalis” \n\nAbstract: Often when bacteria populations acquire resistance against an individual antibiotic\, that resistance mechanism carries pleiotropic effects with it resulting in increased resistance or sensitivity to other antibiotics the population has yet to encounter. If these collateral sensitivity and resistance effects can be understood\, and perhaps predicted\, they can be a potent tool to slow down\, or even reverse\, the spread of antibiotic resistance. To date\, the collateral sensitivity and resistance profiles and their molecular basis have only been studied in a few bacterial species and is unknown for Enterococcus faecalis. Here we present the collateral profile for 17 antibiotics to 68 independent populations of E. faecalis. By clustering these mutants using their collateral profiles we find that large collateral effects are predictable\, while the more common\, smaller collateral effects appear to be more random. Additionally\, we highlight the time dependence of collateral effects for the first time in bacteria.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:ISP Lecture. The Eager Fundamentalist: Muslim Mimicry in the Caribbean
DESCRIPTION:This talk explores the application of the figure of the postcolonial “mimic man\,” as conceived by V.S. Naipaul\, Derek Walcott\, Homi Bhabha\, and others\, to the Muslim Caribbean. The particular Muslim iteration of the Caribbean “mimic man” who continually imitates and fails to produce the culture of the colonizer is the fullaman\, who is usually depicted in Caribbean literature as a “cultural” Muslim who as a result of geographic displacement to the New World and enslavement (of African Muslims) or indentureship (of South Asian Indian Muslims) knows very little about doctrinal Islam. Through a reading of Jan Lowe Shinebourne’s novel \"Chinese Women\" (2010)\, which explores the religious radicalization of a Guyanese Muslim man as a result of colonial plantation racism\, the speaker argues that contemporary Caribbean Muslims attempt to resist cultural mimicry and hybridity with Islamic particularity\, and that in some cases Muslims' metropolitan cultural referent has shifted from the British colonizer to the idealized Arab Salafist\, thereby bringing the Caribbean into regional Americas discourses on terrorism and the global Muslim Other. \n\nAliyah R. Khan is assistant professor in the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies (DAAS) and the Department of English Language and Literature. Her interdisciplinary research and writing focus on indigeneity\, sexuality\, and Islam in the postcolonial Caribbean and its diasporas. Professor Khan's current book project is a study of Islam in the Caribbean imaginary that comparatively considers Indo- and Afro-Muslim literary figuration and creolization discourses in Guyana\, Trinidad\, Jamaica\, and Suriname. Her dissertation\, \"Calling the Magician: The Metamorphic Indo-Caribbean\,\" was awarded the 2011-2012 UC President's Dissertation Fellowship. Professor Khan's teaching interests include Caribbean and Muslim postcolonial literatures\, critical theory\, the posthumanities and animal theory\, gender and sexuality\, graphic novels\, and creative writing (fiction). She has also taught courses on Black Britain in the U-M Center for Global and Intercultural Study's program in London\, United Kingdom\; co-organized the recent \"Black Feminist Think Tank\" and \"How Sweet It Is: Conjuring the Caribbean\" University of Michigan conferences\; and been featured on Chicago's Radio Islam as a commentator on contemporary Muslim and Islamic literatures.

SUMMARY:Film Screening:Film Screening | Coming Full Circle
DESCRIPTION:\"Coming Full Circle\" is a collective version of three documentaries produced by \"Versus\" studio on the Great Repatriation of Armenians (1946-49): \"My Unfamiliar Fatherland\" (2012)\, \"Oh\, Fatherland\, Cold and Sweet\" (2016)\, \"The Last Dream or Game Over\" (2017). \"Coming Full Circle\" provides a unique perspective on the experiences of Armenian immigrants from the Middle East\, Europe and America to the Soviet Union. Enthusiastic about their return to Soviet Armenia\, these people often experienced exclusion and persecutions during the Cold War periods of Stalinism\, the Khrushchev thaw and the Brezhnev stagnation. Based on more than one hundred oral interviews and eyewitness accounts of repatriation conducted in Armenia\, US\, France\, Russia and Lebanon\, as well as newsreels\, photos\, and numerous historical documents\, this documentary bears witness to the lived experiences of the repatriates beyond the Iron Curtain.\n\nFree and open to public.\nQ&A with film producer and screenwriter.\n\nSponsors: Armenian Studies Program\, Armenian Research Center\, Dearborn\; and the Center for Russian\, East European\, and Eurasian Studies

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Window Installation | Cosmogonic Tattoos
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the University’s Bicentennial in 2017\, artist and professor Jim Cogswell has been invited by the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology and the University of Michigan Museum of Art to create a set of public window installations in response to the objects in their collections. Titled \"Cosmogonic Tattoos\,\" his project uses adhesive vinyl images applied in saturated colors to windows in the two buildings\, highlighting the role of these museums in the life of our campus community. Through close examination of objects separated from us by deep chronological and cultural divides\, imaginatively transformed within our campus context\, this project celebrates the power of architecture\, ornament\, and material objects to shape knowledge\, historical memory\, and cultural identity.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Photography into Fiber: ArtPrize Winner
DESCRIPTION:Steve and Ann Loveless both grew up in northwestern lower Michigan and love the nature and beauty of the outdoors. Steve is a fine art photographer\, and Ann is a textile artist. After exhibiting some of Ann’s textile designs inspired by Steve’s photography\, they had the idea to create works that morph a photograph into a textile. One aspect of the process is that it can trick the viewer into questioning what they are seeing and invite them to engage more with the work. Northwood Awakening\, a 25 by 5 foot piece that was the ArtPrize 2015 Public Vote Grand Prize winner\, will be on display.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents The Cut Ups: Paper Collage
DESCRIPTION:Laura Cavanagh is a Michigan native who graduated summa cum laude from the University of Michigan in 2011 with a BFA in Art & Design and a minor in Art History. Cavanagh’s work consists primarily of cut paper and mixed media. Working with these materials allows her to approach her work in much the same way a sculptor does: adding to and cutting away from. Cavanagh finds the artistic process to be deeply meditative. Cavanagh lives and has her studio in a historic home in downtown Rochester\, Michigan.

DESCRIPTION:Cat Crotchett’s current work combines elements of eastern and western cultural patterns in fragments that together form something different than their individual parts. These images represent an intersection of information as well as ideas of cultural appropriation\, assimilation\, fragmentation and alteration. Crotchett uses wax because it is relevant to both eastern and early western artistic cultures. A professional artist for over 30 years\, Crotchett has exhibited nationally and internationally. She is a professor at Western Michigan University and lives in Kalamazoo\, Michigan.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents When Pigs Fly: Oil Painting
DESCRIPTION:Professional artist and instructor Gregory Potter believes that anyone can develop artistic skill if they put the work into it. Potter’s teaching helps with that\, but he also shows his paintings in art fairs\, galleries and even Army barrack walls\, anywhere people enjoy art and laughing out loud. A flightless bird\, his flamingo isn’t deep or subversive\, but it does have a top hat and is riding on the back of a zebra that is standing in a nest powered by a propeller. Nothing unusual for a man who served four tours in the Middle East. Working in his home gallery in Franklin\, Indiana\, he is amused as viewers sometimes see his animals as “above all the B.S.” or “leaving without knowing where [they’re] going.”

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Reforming the Word: Martin Luther in Context
DESCRIPTION:Highlighting manuscripts and early printed books from the Special Collections Library\, the exhibit commemorates the 500th anniversary of a pivotal transformation in world history. In 1517\, Martin Luther\, a professor of theology and a monk\, published his scathing critique of indulgences\, a church practice that allowed Christians to buy off time from suffering for one’s sins in the afterlife.\n\nIssued in the provincial town of Wittenberg\, Luther's call for academic debate and reform unleashed a series of events that led to the break-up of Latin Christianity. The Reformations that followed forever altered the lives of those in early modern Europe and beyond.\n\nThe late medieval German lands teemed with innovation. Novel forms of piety emerged\, the demand for practical learning grew\, more universities competed for students\, and wealth from both trade and mining transformed social relations. The dissemination of texts and ideas on an industrial scale via the printing press reshaped communication\, knowledge\, and belief. In this context\, reform—the renewal of a lost standard of the past in the present—became a battle-cry for religious\, economic\, and political change.\n\nAudubon Room hours: Monday-Friday 8:30am-6:00pm\, Saturday 10:00am-6:00pm\, Sunday 1:00-6:00pm

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gloss: Modeling Beauty
DESCRIPTION:Focusing on the prominent role of women as the subject of photography\, GLOSS: Modeling Beauty explores the shifting ideals of female beauty that pervade European and American visual culture from the 1920s to today. The exhibition features images of sleek and poised female models and celebrities destined for the glossy pages of fashion magazines and catalogs by leading photographers such as Edward Steichen\, Philippe Halsman\, Helmut Newton\, Andy Warhol\, and Guy Bourdin. Outside of commercial advertising practice\, documentary photographers Elliott Erwitt\, Joel Meyerowitz\, and Ralph Gibson portray candid images of fashionable women on city streets and mannequins in shop windows\, resulting in intriguing juxtapositions of haute couture and everyday life. And\nartists James Van Der Zee\, Eduardo Paolozzi\, and Nikki S. Lee employ the visual strategies of traditional fashion photography\, while offering alternative narratives to mainstream notions of female beauty.\n\nLead support for Gloss: Modeling Beauty is provided by Bank of America and Merrill Lynch. Additional generous support is provided by the University of Michigan Institute for Research on Women and Gender.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Moving Image: Portraiture
DESCRIPTION:Moving Image: Portraiture presents a contemporary spin on traditional notions of portraiture. In the video Towards An Architect\, Hannu Karjalainen portrays a fictional architect who is experiencing the response of people living in the structures he designed. Daniel Rozin’s Mirror No. 10 is driven by software\, written by the artist\, that generates a real-time reflection of the environment the screen is displayed in—specifically a live sketch of the viewer approaching the frame. Mesocosm (Northumberland\, UK) is an algorithmic work by Marina Zurkow that depicts the passage of time on the moors of Northeast England.\n\nMoving Image: Portraiture is the third of three exhibitions drawn from the collection of the Borusan Contemporary\, Istanbul\, which since 2011 has been focused on media arts. The works in this series address both formal concerns and conceptual topics\; many represent traditional categories such as portraiture and landscape that find new resonance when explored through the strategies of dynamic technology.\n\nLead support for Moving Image: Portraiture is provided by the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment and the University of Michigan Institute for the Humanities and Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Power Contained: The Art of Authority in Central and West Africa
DESCRIPTION:Before colonization\, complex hierarchical societies flourished in Central and West Africa. At their summits were a select few—kings and chiefs whose authority was derived from their direct connection to powerful ancestors and predecessors. These rulers were wrapped in expensive textiles or costly furs\, and covered in beads and precious metals\, materials that not only signaled their extraordinary status\, but were also intended to safely contain the great power they wielded. The famous minkisi (meaning “power figure”) sculptures of Central Africa were similarly activated through the addition of charged materials. Textiles\, animal skin\, metal\, and beads allowed the lifeless wooden carvings to be activated by local spiritual leaders in order to communicate with the realm of the ancestors and spirits. This exhibition explores the parallels between the adornment of the king’s physical body and minkisi. Drawing on works from UMMA’s collection and several loans\, the exhibition demonstrates how authority was expressed and power contained across a range of historical cultures in Nigeria\, Ghana\, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Cameroon.\n\nLead support for Power Contained: The Art of Authority in Central and West Africa is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost and the African Studies Center.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Teach Out Series: The Internet and You
DESCRIPTION:Can the Internet be controlled? Should it be? How does the history of the Internet help predict what we should expect for its future? Is net neutrality a lost cause or something worth fighting for? The Internet continues to surprise us as a force for change and disruption in our daily lives and society at large. While it seems as though these significant disruptions are a recent phenomena\, in reality we have seen these profound societal disruptions since the 1990s. In this Teach-Out\, participants will learn how the Internet has affected human communication\, the sharing and discovery of information\, and social interactions. Discussions on current trends and potential ways the Internet will continue to affect society will also be explored\, as well as how learners can empower their own productivity and impact in the ever-evolving landscape of the Internet.\n\nA Teach-Out is:\n\n-an event – it takes place over a fixed\, short period of time\n\n-an opportunity – it is open for free participation to everyone around the world\n\n-a community – it will be joined by a large number of diverse individuals\n\n-a conversation – an opportunity to give and take ideas and information from people\n\nThe University of Michigan Teach-Out Series provides just-in-time community learning events for participants around the world to come together in conversation with the U-M campus community\, including faculty experts. The U-M Teach-Out Series is part of our deep commitment to engage the public in exploring and understanding the problems\, events\, and phenomena most important to society.\n\nTeach-Outs are short learning experiences\, each focused on a specific current issue. Attendees will come together over a few days not only to learn about a subject or event but also to gain skills. Teach-Outs are open to the world and are designed to bring together individuals with wide-ranging perspectives in respectful and deep conversation. These events are an opportunity for diverse learners and a multitude of experts to come together to ask questions of one another and explore new solutions to the pressing concerns of our global community. Come\, join the conversation!\n\nFind new opportunities at teach-out.org.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Flights of Fancy: Oil Painting
DESCRIPTION:Since Ellie Harold started painting in 2003\, she has primarily been a landscape artist\, painting Michigan barns and lake shore scenes in oil. In November 2016\, following a trip to Mexico\, birds unexpectedly started migrating to her canvases and an entirely new body of work began to take shape. The current exhibit\, Flights of Fancy\, features birds in colorful\, light-filled works. The birds represent the lightness she associates with qualities of joy\, hope\, healing and inspiration she sees as a source of personal well-being.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Under Covers: Encaustic & Mixed Media

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Louis and Helen Padnos Lecture Series: \"Intersex Bodies in Tosefta Bikkurim\"
DESCRIPTION:The androgynus is defined by the anonymous majority in Tosefta Bikkurim\, chapter 2\, as sometimes male\, sometimes female\, sometimes both and sometimes neither. A minority opinion even goes so far as to claim that the androgynus is sui generis. But does this definition\, or even the Tosefta’s attempt at creating a halakhic framework for the androgynus\, constitute “providing a means for integrating the androgynus into mainstream culture?” This lecture explores the question\, “does the category of androgynus as defined by Tosefta Bikkurim offer us a new look at gender\, or does it\, once again\, confine us to a binary system of male and female?” This will be explored through an examination of the halakhic status of the androgynus\, as well as through a literary reading of the text itself.\n\nImage: © Sharon Gershoni\n\nIf you have a disability that requires a reasonable accommodation\, contact the Judaic Studies office at 734-763-9047 at least two weeks prior to the event.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Mind-Body Awareness: Traditional Chinese Kung Fu Philosophy and Practice with Grandmaster Sam F.S. Chin
DESCRIPTION:Grandmaster Sam Chin will share with you his experience and how practicing the path of I Liq Chuan could help with daily activities such as your work and studies\, as well as person living with physical disabilities specifically cerebral palsy.\n\nGrandmaster Sam Chin was born in Malaysia and trained martial arts since childhood by his father – the founder of I Liq Chuan\, Chin Lik Keong. During the 1980’s\, GM° Sam Chin won numerous competitions\, as well as the state heavy weight kickboxing championships of Malaysia\, Selangor in 1978.\n\nAfter he immigrated to the United States with his family in the early 1990’s\, he then spent the next ten years working and teaching martial arts at the famous Chuang Yen Monastery in Carmel\, New York. There\, Master Sam F.S. Chin was exposed to numerous dharma and meditation masters. A breakthrough came about when he attended a dynamic mindfulness and awareness retreat taught by a well known Thailand monk – Ven. Achan Tong. Master Sam Chin developed the ability to observe the vicissitudes of the mind and physical body\, realizing back to simplicity and the base of origin. This started his inquiry into the neutral path\, which later became The Path of I Liq Chuan (pronounced Yi Leek Chi-uan)\, and eventually lead to the founding of Zhong Xin Dao in early 2016. With this penetrating clarity\, he introduced Zen philosophy into his family art. Master Sam F.S. Chin began to distill unifying principles\, further clarifying the essential body mechanics and sensory experiences\, and their relationship to mental awareness.\n\nIn August 2009\, at the age of 55 Grandmaster Sam F.S. Chin is officially named the Gate Keeper / Lineage Holder of the art by his father\, founder of I Liq Chuan\, Chin Lik Keong.\n\nHe was also recognized by the USA Wushu Kung-Fu Federation\, an official member of the International Olympic Committee\, as a Hall of Fame Outstanding Master.\n\nIn January 2016\, China’s largest national television network CCTV aired a near 90 minutes documentary on Master Sam F.S. Chin and his family art. The documentary shows the scope of the I Liq Chuan’s invaluable teachings through Zhong Xin Dao philosophies of the neutral path\, enhancing the lives of people living with blindness\, physical handicaps\, and the elderly.\n\nMaster Sam F.S. Chin passion shows through his teachings as he shares his family art selflessly for those seeking self-improvement. He created the grading system to ensure the art is transmitted transparently for years to come. There are now certified instructors and authorized group leaders in over 20 countries and credited courses in universities helping students learn how to learn.

SUMMARY:Social / Informal Gathering:Guided Tour - Cosmogonic Tattoos
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the University of Michigan’s Bicentennial in 2017\, artist and distinguished Stamps School of Art and Design professor Jim Cogswell has been invited to create a series of public window installations at the University of Michigan Museum of Art and the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology. For this visionary project\, the artist will adhere a procession of vivid images to the glass walls of the museums in a rhythmically evocative narrative of reassembled fragments from a diverse range of artworks in both museums’ permanent collections. By leveraging the buildings’ unique architecture\, the artist expands our understanding of a museum as a cultural repository and highlights the significant role of these institutions in the life of the campus community. UMMA docents will introduce the juxtaposed images and help connect the viewer to the origins and meaning of objects and their power to shape knowledge\, memory\, and identity.\n\nLead support for Cosmogonic Tattoos is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost. Additional support for the artist's project is provided by the University of Michigan Bicentennial Office and the Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Exhibit: Sino-American Relations and \"Ping-Pong Diplomacy\,\" 1971-1972 (Sept.15-Dec. 22\, 2017)
DESCRIPTION:During the early 1970s\, the two large countries at either end of the Pacific shaped the restless world in their own ways. China was moving full steam ahead on the Cultural Revolution. The U.S. was grappling with a series of domestic and international problems including the Vietnam War. Mired in ideological opposition\, U.S.-China relations had been hostile since the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949. Getting these Cold War foes to reconnect with each other looked like a mission impossible. Curiously\, Ping-Pong emerged to play an important role in bringing U.S.-China relations to rapprochement in the early 1970s and finally to normalization in 1979. \n\nThe historically significant Ping-Pong exchanges between China and the U.S. held in 1971 and 1972\, which came to be called “Ping-Pong Diplomacy” (乒乓外交 pingpang waijiao) in English\, were nicknamed xiaoqiu zhuandong daqiu 小球转动大球 (small ball spins the big globe) in Chinese. Unbeknownst to many\, Michigan played a key role in the 1972 exchanges. \n\nFeaturing an authentic Ping-Pong-table-sized panel that details highlights of these exchanges\, this exhibition commemorates the 45th anniversary of the Chinese Table Tennis Delegation’s historic visit to the U.S. in 1972\, especially to Ann Arbor and the U-M. Curated by Chinese Studies Librarian Liangyu Fu\, this exhibition is co-sponsored by the Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies\, the Confucius Institute\, and the Asia Library.

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:10th Annual Michigan Pre-College and Youth Outreach Conference
DESCRIPTION:World economies are increasingly driven by knowledge and information\; the effects of globalization require greater civic engagement and cultural literacy. Postsecondary education remains the best way for civic actors to equip themselves with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in our evolving global landscape. Launched in 2009\, the Big Goal sought to spur a college attainment rate of 60% in America by 2025. Although modest progress has been made\, the US continues to lag behind other industrialized countries and the majority of college graduates are from privileged backgrounds. While 70% of jobs in Michigan now require training beyond high school\, the state lags behind the nation’s average for college attainment and fewer than a quarter of the state’s high school graduates are college-ready. We must do better.\n\nAt the Michigan Pre-College and Youth Outreach Conference\, we will examine challenges to postsecondary attainment and explore opportunities to address them. Increasing access to postsecondary opportunities for low-income\, first-generation and underrepresented college students will benefit the state and our nation. Scholars\, researchers\, and practitioners will demonstrate the impact of promising approaches to inform\, engage and inspire Michigan’s youth to pursue postsecondary education. Together\, we can address The Urgency of College Access.\n\nAdditional supporters include:\nMichigan State University Office of University Outreach and Engagement\nMichigan College Advising Corps\nGrand Valley State University\nWestern Michigan State University\nSaginaw Valley State University\nUniversity of Michigan-Dearborn

SUMMARY:Exhibition:American Berserk exhibition by Valerie Hegarty
DESCRIPTION:Throughout her career\, Brooklyn-based artist Valerie Hegarty has explored fundamental themes of American history and particularly the legacy of 19th-century American art\, addressing topics such as colonization\, slavery\, Manifest Destiny\, nationalism and environmental degradation. Elaborating upon visual references to the art-historical canon of North America\, Hegarty repurposes the ideological tenets of such works into a critical examination of the American legacy.\n\nThe show’s title\, American Berserk\, is borrowed from Philip Roth’s Pulitzer-winning novel American Pastoral\, in which he defines the inverse of the American pastoral ideal as the “indigenous American Berserk.” The show includes a group of ceramic sculptures and a mixed-media site-specific sculpture jutting from the wall. Hegarty’s anarchic\, revisionist take on American history as manifested in the nation’s artistic legacy is embodied in her fantastical works. The sculptures\, which seem imported from a parallel universe\, include watermelons that become animated\, explode and then decay\, sly depictions of George Washington as a series of topiaries\, spectral clipper ships sinking and calcifying into shells\, a branch breaking through the wall and piercing a painting of George Washington making his nose appear to grow and a duo of “fruit face” personae that survey the surreal proceedings.\n\nNote: This grouping of works is an edited restaging of the original show that was initially presented at Burning in Water gallery in New York in 2016.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Aerospace Department Seminar - Moving Towards Autonomous UAS Operations
DESCRIPTION:Darryl Jenkins is Chairman and Executive Director of the American Aviation Institute\n\nThe birth of the UAS commercial industry came from multiple places. A lot of the technology used in the commercial UAS industry is flowing downhill from Defense in a miniaturized form. At the same time\, the UAS industry is also transitioning from a hobbyist to a commercial industry. Commercial UAS is one of the few high tech startups to begin as a black market.\n\nEconomics rule this industry and dictate the physics and engineering. The fundamental axiom of all UAS economics is it is a disruptive technology. This means commercial platforms will be small\, fly low and not very fast. While the potential economic impact is very large\, the economic impact of line of sight UAS is relatively insignificant. The biggest economic impact is when we get to autonomous UAS. The micro-economic uses facing us are rather straight forward and we have abundant case studies to manage these. The macro-economic issues are mostly exogenous threats. The largest exogenous threat is the FAA and lack of industry agreement.\n\nThe industry we are really talking about is not UAS manufacturing\, but rather remote imagining as that is where we use UAS. The areas of interest to all autonomous vehicles are AI and sensors. It appears autonomous cars are well in the lead and UAS can learn from them.\n\nAbout the speaker...\n\nDarryl Jenkins is Chairman and Executive Director of the American Aviation Institute. He is the founder of the George Washington University Aviation Institute\, a past professor at GWU and Embry Riddle Aeronautical University\, adviser and consultant to airlines and aviation companies and author of the Handbook of Airline Economics and ten other aviation related books. He is also the author of the forthcoming two volume \"Advanced Commercial UAS Economics.\"

State Street\, Ann Arbor 48109-3091\n11:30am-1:00pm (pizza lunch provided)\n \nFree and open to the public\n \nAbout the lecture:\nSince the November 2016 elections\, issues surrounding the nuts-and-bolts of election administration have risen to the forefront of discussion and debate\, both here in Michigan and across the nation. This CLOSUP event begins with Debra Horner presenting new survey data collected by the Michigan Public Policy Survey (MPPS) exploring views of Michigan's local government leaders on: confidence in the accuracy of Michigan elections\; problems experienced in election administration\; training of poll workers and clerks who oversee elections\; plans to update voting equipment\; and support and opposition to a host of potential election reforms. \n\nThen Christopher Thomas will explore a range of related issues\, placing Michigan’s experiences in broader national context\, while discussing the past\, present and future of election issues. Thomas will address topics such as voter registration policy and the effects of President Trump's voter fraud commission as well as recent Supreme Court decisions regarding the Voting Rights Act\, control of ballots\, voting equipment failure\, and allegations of Russian interference\, ending with thoughts on challenges and reforms going forward.\n\nDr. Debra Horner is a project manager at U-M's Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy in the Center for Local\, State\, and Urban Policy (CLOSUP)\, where she oversees the biannual Michigan Public Policy Survey (MPPS) program. She has been a lecturer in the Political Science Department for the past 10 years\, and also teaches a class on Michigan Politics and Policy in the Ford School. She received her doctorate in Political Science from the University of Michigan in 2007\, and has experience with large-scale survey research projects both in academia and the private sector. Debra's primary areas of research center on individuals’ political attitudes and political participation\, as well as a wide range of policy issues at the state and local levels in Michigan.\n\nChristopher M. Thomas retired from the Michigan Department of State on June 30\, 2017 after 40 years of election administration service\, which included 36 years as Director of Elections. His election related activities include working as a Fellow at the Bipartisan Policy Center and serving on the Boards of two distinguished election organizations: MIT Election Data and Science Lab and U.S. Vote Foundation.\n\nWhile employed by the Michigan Secretary of State\, he administered the Michigan election law\, campaign finance act and lobbyist disclosure law. He began his election administration career in 1974 in Washington\, D.C. with the U.S. House of Representatives and the Federal Election Commission. In 2013\, he was appointed by President Barack Obama as a Commissioner on the Presidential Commission on Election Administration\, which made recommendations to improve the election day experience of America’s voters.\n\nChris earned a B.A. in Political Science from Michigan State University\, a M.A. in Urban Affairs from St. Louis University in St. Louis\, MO\, and a J.D. from Thomas Cooley Law School in Lansing. He is currently a member of the Michigan State Bar Association and was an Adjunct Professor at Thomas M. Cooley Law School\, teaching Election Law between 2001 and 2013. He is a founding member of the National Association of State Election Directors (NASED) and was elected NASED’s President in 1997 and again in 2013. He represented NASED on the Board of Advisors to the U.S. Election Assistance Commission from 2004 to 2017 and served as the Board Chair from 2006 – 2008.
