SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. The Art of Memory\, Paintings by Felix Lembersky
DESCRIPTION:Felix Lembersky (1913-1970) was a painter\, theater stage designer\, teacher\, and leader of artistic groups. He began his career within the Soviet Avant-Garde in Ukraine before studying realist painting in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). Throughout his life he worked across realist and modernist styles that fell outside of Soviet-mandated Socialist Realism. His Execution: Babyn Yar series (ca. 1944-52) is the earliest known artistic representation of Babyn Yar\, a Holocaust massacre site in Kyiv. For political reasons\, these paintings\, along with his later nonconformist work\, were barred from exhibition in the Soviet Union.\n\nHaving witnessed two world wars\, the 1917 revolution\, and political terror\, Lembersky reflected on these experiences with candor while imbuing his work with hope and optimism. He was drawn to vulnerable\, neglected\, and marginalized people: children\, the elderly\, ethnic minorities\, and industrial workers subjected to harsh labor and dangerous conditions. Regardless of their circumstances\, Lembersky portrayed his subjects with empathy\, dignity\, and admiration. \n\n“For my father\, honesty and integrity meant more than anything else. Art was an expression of freedom\, individuality\, and personalized creativity\, without which it ceased to be art.”\n— Galina Lembersky\, daughter\n\nExhibit curated by Yelena Lembersky\, granddaughter of Felix Lembersky\, and Geneviève Zubrzycki\, WCEE Director.\n\nWorks on loan from the private collection of Yelena Lembersky.\n\nContact weisercenter@umich.edu to schedule a viewing.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at weisercenter@umich.edu. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Performance:Symphony Band
DESCRIPTION:There are few American composers\, living or past\, whose music is more widely recognized and loved than John Williams. With countless pieces written for stage and screen\, American icons and legendary events\, Williams' music is the soundtrack of the American spirit. Now in his 92nd year\, the Symphony Band celebrates the inimitable legacy of John Williams and his music\, and this all-Williams program will also pay tribute to the 50th anniversary of the release of the very first *Star Wars* movie.\n\nJason Fettig\, conductor\n\nPROGRAM\n*The Star Spangled Banner*\, John Williams\nMarch from \"Superman\"\, John Williams / trans.
SUMMARY:Performance:This Is The Kit
DESCRIPTION:“her music is like a pretty country house with all manner going on below stairs” –The Guardian\n\nIn today's fast-paced mid-apocalyptic world it can feel like a waste of time to speak about time at all. Why dwell on the past when we could just live in the present because the future won't shut up about how bad it's going to be?\n \nBut with This is the Kit aka Kate Stables (songwriter / banjo strummer / pinhole camera lover / Winchester UK born Paris dweller)\, we're going to have to give time just a modicum of consideration. Because not only is Kate still here and making albums of cataclysmic honesty and welcoming tonal embraces\, they are continuing to grow\, which is probably the only smart way to move forward through time.\n \nThis Is The Kit's music places companionship at a premium\, so being welcomed into its space feels like an obvious privilege\, on record and in concert hall with her stellar supporting cast of Rozi Plain (bass)\, Jamie Whitby-Coles (drums) and Neil Smith (guitar). And at this current point in our confusing history\, continuing to be here at all\, to stand tall and make music to gather to\, that's a heroic act. Joyful survival as an act of time-wasting\, I'll take that any day of the week. Look to This Is The Kit to spend at least one day of your week this year\, I guarantee it will be time well wasted.

SUMMARY:Performance:The Elixir of Love (L'Elisir d'Amore)
DESCRIPTION:The handsome young peasant Nemorino is hopelessly in love with Adina\, but she barely gives him a glance. In fact\, she seems enamored with the head of the local garrison\, Sgt. Belcore\, even going so far as to promise to marry him immediately. A desperate Nemorino resorts to “magic\,” seeking help from Dr. Dulcamara\, a charming con man\, who guarantees him that one drink of a mysterious elixir will make Adina fall in love with him within 24 hours. In order to get the elixir (actually just an ordinary Bordeaux) to work faster and thereby prevent Adina’s impending marriage\, Nemorino downs the entire bottle in one gulp. With charming twists and turns\, love blossoms in all the right places.\n\nOne of the most popular works of the opera repertoire\, *The Elixir of Love* has been an audience favorite since its debut in 1832. Composed by Donizetti in just two weeks\, the opera skillfully balances comedy with poignancy and simplicity with detailed invention in a fresh\, exhilarating example of bel canto. The score is filled with delightful arias\, duets\, and ensembles\, including two hauntingly beautiful tenor arias for Nemorino\, “Una furtiva lagrima” and “Quanto è bella.” The 19th-century Italian equivalent of a Broadway musical\, *The Elixir of Love* is a delightful tale about the innocence of love that is sure to make audiences smile.\n\nSung in Italian with Eng. Supertitles\nWith the University Philharmonia Orchestra\n\nComposed by Gaetano Donizetti\nLibretto by Felice Romani\nConducted by Kirk Severtson\nDirected by Chía Patiño

Supertitles\nWith the University Philharmonia Orchestra\n\nComposed by Gaetano Donizetti\nLibretto by Felice Romani\nConducted by Kirk Severtson\nDirected by Chía Patiño\n

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Japanese Medical Aid\, Iranian Blood\, and the Diplomacy of Genetic Racialism
DESCRIPTION:In 1966\, Japan’s Overseas Technical Cooperation Agency (OTCA) established an office for “medical cooperation\,” which recruited Japanese medical schools to participate in international aid projects to strengthen scientific\, as well as political\, ties with countries across Asia and Africa. Gifu University Medical School was selected to work in Iran\, launching a flow of Japanese personnel and scientific equipment to the laboratories of Tehran University. While Iranian scientists were primarily interested in receiving technical aid\, Japanese scientists were eager to conduct joint fieldwork projects. The organization of a joint expedition to northern Iran in 1972 exposed a series of tensions in the Japanese-Iranian collaboration. The team eventually collected blood samples from thousands of Iranian villagers to screen them for pathologies. Then\, most of these blood samples were shipped to Japan\, where they had a surprising afterlife. Circulating through laboratories in Tokyo\, Nagasaki\, and Osaka\, the Iranian blood was incorporated into a research project to analyze genetic variation within Japan’s own population\, and data from the samples featured in Japanese publications hypothesizing about the origins of the Japanese race. Meanwhile\, in publications with Iranian co-authors\, the meaning of the genetic data had to be re-negotiated according to Iranian understandings of racial identity.\n\nElise K. Burton is an associate professor for the Institute of the History & Philosophy of Science & Technology at the University of Toronto. She is the author of Genetic Crossroads: The Middle East and the Science of Human Heredity (Stanford University Press\, 2021). She is currently working on multiple projects examining the history of 20th-century scientific collaborations across Asia and the Middle East\, including the history of Japanese archaeological and genetic expeditions in West Asia\, the linked histories of physical anthropology in India and Iran\, and the history of ancient DNA studies in Egypt. She is also one of the co-editors of Isis\, the flagship journal of the History of Science Society.

SUMMARY:Performance:Murakami by the Sea: An original work inspired by the work of Haruki Murakami
DESCRIPTION:Murakami by the Sea is a full evening-length devised work inspired by novels and short stories by Haruki Murakami. Placed within a constantly evolving environment of cardboard and broken tires the production creates a surreal\, emotionally charged yet often humorous world through an immersive blend of movement\, spoken word\, fantastical props\, music\, and evocative design\, where some of the urgent questions of our time are intertwined. How much do we know and care about the world we live in? What are the ethics and aesthetics of war? How does our relationship to other human beings\, animals\, objects\, and the environment shape? Can we dissolve the boundaries between self and the nonhuman world? What does solitude mean and how can we build a community? How can we remember what is precious to us and how can forgetting make us heal our wounds? The work is directed by Tzveta Kassabova with the cast and is shaped by the dramaturg Teresa Kovacs.

How can we remember what is precious to us and how can forgetting make us heal our wounds? The work is directed by Tzveta Kassabova with the cast and is shaped by the dramaturg Teresa Kovacs.
