SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:AE585 Graduate Seminar Series - Dealing with a Little Turbulence on the Trip out to Mars
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Benjamin Jorns\, Assistant Professor Aerospace Engineering\, University of Michigan\n\nHigh power electric propulsion (EP) thrusters are an enabling technology for the next generation of deep-space exploration. The high specific impulse of these systems translates to substantial savings in cost when compared to spacecraft that employ traditional chemical rockets. \nThis cost savings comes with the caveat\, however\, that EP systems inherently have low thrust. In order to perform orbital transfers\, they therefore must operate continuously for years---accelerating the spacecraft to its destination very gradually. This requirement poses a unique challenge as to how to certify thruster lifetime for long-duration\, deep-space missions. While one potential and attractive solution to this problem is to perform qualification through analysis\, developing the numerical tools required for this technique has proved to be intractable to date. This is because there are key aspects of the fundamental operation of these systems that we do not sufficiently understand to model them. Most notably\, for the EP system baselined for most deep space missions\, the Hall thruster\, there are a number of open questions about what governs a critical aspect of its operation---the electron dynamics in its exhaust. This talk focuses on a theoretical description of how the onset of low-level plasma turbulence might be the dominant contributor to the electron dynamics in the Hall thruster and provides an overview of experimental work to date that has been done at the University of Michigan to address the underlying questions concerning this process. The implications of this work are discussed in the context of developing testing and modeling methods for future mission applications. \n\nAbout the speaker...\n\nDr. Benjamin Jorns is an assistant professor in the Department of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Michigan and co-director of the Plasmadynamics and Electric Propulsion Laboratory (PEPL). Prior to joining PEPL\, Dr. Jorns was a member of the electric propulsion group at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena\, California where his work combined experimental and analytical techniques to investigate propulsion systems for the next generation of NASA robotic missions. Dr. Jorns also held a lecturer appointment in the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department at UCLA from 2013-2015. His primary research interests include wear mechanisms and stability in electric propulsion systems\, turbulence and nonlinear processes in low-temperature plasmas\, developing new plasma diagnostics\, and investigating breakthrough forms of in-space propulsion. He has experience with several commercial and government-build plasma propulsion systems including high-current hollow cathodes\, 1-10 kW class Hall thrusters\, and low-TRL electrodeless thruster concepts. His work with electric propulsion technology has centered on developing first-principles understanding of their operating principles as well as implementing time-resolved and laser-based diagnostics to characterize behavior.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Donia Human Rights Center Lecture. The United States and the Making of the 1970s Global Human Rights Imagination
DESCRIPTION:American assumptions about their own primacy in the making of a global human rights order ran deep in the 1970s\, a perception that persists to the present day. As one observer has said\, the United States is \"the one nation where human rights is center stage for the world.\" In fact there was a global explosion of interest in human rights in the 1970s. But Americans did not get there first. In fact\, one might argue they got there last. Bradley explains why that is so\, focusing on the rise of new transnational forces that transformed the very nature of international order in the late twentieth century.\n\nMark Philip Bradley is the author of \"The World Reimagined: Americans and Human Rights in the Twentieth Century\" (Cambridge\, 2016)\, \"Vietnam at War\" (Oxford\, 2009)\, and \"Imagining Vietnam and America: The Making of Postcolonial Vietnam\" (UNC\, 2000)\, which won the Harry J. Benda Prize from the Association for Asian Studies. He is the coeditor of \"Familiar Made Strange: American Icons and Artifacts after the Transnational Turn\" (Cornell\, 2015)\, \"Making Sense of the Vietnam Wars\" (Oxford\, 2008)\, and \"Truth Claims: Representation and Human Rights\" (Rutgers\, 2001). Bradley's work has appeared in the \"Journal of American History\,\" the \"Journal of World History\,\" \"Diplomatic History\,\" and \"Dissent.\" \n \nA recipient of fellowships from the American Council of Learned Societies\, the National Endowment for the Humanities\, and Fulbright-Hays\, Bradley is currently working on an intellectual history of the global south and serves as the general editor for the four volume \"Cambridge History of America and the World.\" \n \nHe has served as president of the Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations and is coeditor of the Cornell University Press book series\, \"The United States in the World.\"

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EEB Thursday Seminar: Spatiotemporal dynamics of antibiotic response in e. faecalis
DESCRIPTION:Antibiotic resistance is among the most urgent threats to public health. In this talk\, I will discuss our group’s ongoing efforts to understand how E. faecalis\, a common source of nosocomial infections\, responds to antibiotics across multiple length and time scales. First\, I’ll describe recent experiments demonstrating that growth inhibition depends strongly on population density for many commonly used antibiotics\, potentially leading to bistable treatment outcomes in a pharmacological model of antibiotic treatment. Perhaps more surprisingly\, in the limit of high population densities\, subinhibitory antibiotic concentrations can promote formation of biofilms--an effect that reflects a trade-off between antibiotic efficacy and the beneficial effects of cell lysis--while higher doses can shape the single-cell architecture of drug resistant communities. Finally\, I’ll overview ongoing work combining laboratory evolution with mathematical modeling aimed at slowing resistance evolution using temporal sequences of antibiotics.\n\nView YouTube video of seminar: https://youtu.be/Unt0dz_pGi8

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EIHS Lecture: The Global Crisis of 2008: Approaches for a Future History
DESCRIPTION:2008 is associated in American historical memory above all with the failure of Lehman Brothers\, the subprime crisis\, the Big Short\, and the election of Barack Obama. But this all-American view drastically foreshortens a crisis with global financial\, economic\, political\, and indeed geopolitical ramifications. It is too early to write the history of the crisis and yet it was instantly historicized as an epochal break in the post-Cold War era. This talk will sketch the outlines of a future history.\n\nAdam Tooze is the Kathryn and Shelby Cullom Davis Professor of History at Columbia University\, where he also serves as director of the European Institute. Prior to Columbia he taught at Yale University where he was director of International Security Studies. He began his professional life at the University of Cambridge where he taught for thirteen years. Tooze has published extensively on modern European history\, economic history\, and current affairs. He is best known for three prize-winning books: Statistics and the German State 1900-1945: The Making of Modern Economic Knowledge (Cambridge\, 2001)\, Wages of Destruction: The Making and Breaking of the Nazi Economy (2006)\, and The Deluge: The Great War and the Remaking of the Global Order (2014). The Deluge was the winner of the LA Times Prize for History. In 2015 he was the co-editor with Michael Geyer of the third volume of the Cambridge History of World War II. Sudden Stop\, a history of the global financial crisis of 2008 and its aftermath\, will appear in 2018. Tooze blogs from adamtooze.com and @adam_tooze.\n\nFree and open to the public. \n\nThis event is part of the Thursday Series of the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. It is made possible by a generous contribution from Kenneth and Frances Aftel Eisenberg.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Experimental Evidence on the Economics of Rural electrification
DESCRIPTION:We present results from an experiment that randomized the expansion of electric grid infrastructure in rural Kenya. Electricity distribution is the canonical example of a natural monopoly. Randomized price offers show that demand for electricity connections falls sharply with price. Experimental variation in the number of connections\, combined with administrative cost data\, reveals considerable scale economies\, as hypothesized. However\, consumer surplus is far less than total construction costs at all price levels. Moreover\, we do not find meaningful medium-run impacts on economic\, health\, and educational outcomes\, nor evidence of spillovers to unconnected local households. These results suggest that current efforts to increase residential electrification in rural Kenya may reduce social welfare. We discuss how leakage of funds\, reduced demand (due to red tape\, low reliability\, and credit constraints)\, and other factors may impact this conclusion

SUMMARY:Other:On Discovery in Catalysis
DESCRIPTION: Catalysis is a key technology of our modern societies\, since it allows for increased levels of selectivity and efficacy of chemical transformations. While significant progress can be made by rational design or engineered step-by-step improvements\, many pressing challenges in the field require the discovery of new and formerly unexpected results. Arguably\, the question “How to discover?” is at the heart of the scientific process. \nIn this talk\, strategies and discoveries from the Glorius group will be discussed. Topics might involve art\, the use of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) in different fields of catalysis and also photocatalysis.\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \nFrank Glorius (Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster)

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:What will the future hold for low-income people? A view from Washington.
DESCRIPTION:Join Poverty Solutions for a discussion with Olivia Golden\, Executive Director of The Center for Law and Social Policy on family policy\, child care and early education\, work support strategies\, and what the future may hold for low-income people in America.\n\nTalk: 4:30-6:00PM\nReception: 6:00-6:30PM\n\nAbout Olivia Golden:\nOlivia Golden is CLASP's executive director. An expert in child and family programs at the federal\, state\, and local levels\, she has a track record of delivering results for low-income children and families in the nonprofit sector and at all levels of government. During the eight years she served as Commissioner for Children\, Youth\, and Families and then as Assistant Secretary for Children and Families at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (1993-2001)\, Ms. Golden was a key player in expanding and improving Head Start and creating Early Head Start\, implementing landmark welfare reform\, tripling the level of funding for child care\, and doubling adoptions from foster care.\n\nAs an Institute fellow at the Urban Institute from 2008 to 2013\, Ms. Golden spoke\, wrote\, and led major initiatives on poverty and the safety net\, families' economic security and children's well-being. She brings to CLASP the leadership role in a major multi-state initiative\, Work Support Strategies\, which provides six states with the opportunity to design\, test\, and implement reforms to improve low-income working families' access to health reform\, nutrition assistance\, and child care subsidies.\n\nUnder her leadership from 2001 to 2004\, the D.C. Children and Family Services Agency emerged from federal court receivership and markedly improved the lives of children in the District. Her book Reforming Child Welfare [2009] melds this experience with original research to recommend policy\, practice\, and leadership strategies to improve outcomes for very vulnerable children and their families.\n\nDuring 2007\, she oversaw the management of all state government agencies as New York's director of state operations. She was also director of programs and policy at the Children's Defense Fund (1991-1993)\, a lecturer in public policy at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government at (1987-1991)\, and budget director of Massachusetts's Executive Office of Human Services (1983-1985). Her book\, Poor Children and Welfare Reform [1992]\, draws lessons from welfare programs around the country that tried to make a difference to families by serving two generations\, both parent and child.\n\nMs. Golden holds a doctorate and a master's degree in public policy from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard\, where she earned a B.A. in philosophy and government.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:MAS Lecture | Nobi-ni Tse'tse'ede (House on the Cold One)\, an Original Occupation
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Emily Mueller Epstein as she explores the results of her dissertation research within the context of pre-contact houses and households in the American Northwest. Archaeological excavation at four sites on Tse’tse’ede\, “The Cold One” (Steens Mountain\, Oregon) produced evidence for a subsistence and settlement system that likely supported a population of 100 or more. Material culture recovered in association with one house\, various domestic surfaces\, and from a high-elevation hunting locale revealed human use of the mountain spanning thousands of years (roughly 10\,000 to 3\,000 years ago). The excavated house joins the record of diverse Northern Great Basin house structures. Spatial analysis of recovered artifacts revealed specific activity areas at the site\, and exotic artifacts suggest that households were connected to larger regional\, social\, and economic networks reaching into northern California and southwest Oregon. \n\nLecture presented by Michigan Archaeological Society: \nhttp://www.miarch.org/

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Window Installation | Cosmogonic Tattoos
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the University’s Bicentennial in 2017\, artist and professor Jim Cogswell has been invited by the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology and the University of Michigan Museum of Art to create a set of public window installations in response to the objects in their collections. Titled \"Cosmogonic Tattoos\,\" his project uses adhesive vinyl images applied in saturated colors to windows in the two buildings\, highlighting the role of these museums in the life of our campus community. Through close examination of objects separated from us by deep chronological and cultural divides\, imaginatively transformed within our campus context\, this project celebrates the power of architecture\, ornament\, and material objects to shape knowledge\, historical memory\, and cultural identity.

Featuring the work of famous architects such as Alexander Jackson Davis\, Albert Kahn and Eero Saarinen\, the exhibit presents maps\, plans\, architectural drawings\, proposals\, and photographs of the campus throughout its evolution.\n\nThe Library will be closed December 23 to January 1.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Flights of Fancy: Oil Painting
DESCRIPTION:Since Ellie Harold started painting in 2003\, she has primarily been a landscape artist\, painting Michigan barns and lake shore scenes in oil. In November 2016\, following a trip to Mexico\, birds unexpectedly started migrating to her canvases and an entirely new body of work began to take shape. The birds represent the lightness she associates with qualities of joy\, hope\, healing and inspiration she sees as a source of personal well-being.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Photography into Fiber: ArtPrize Winner
DESCRIPTION:Steve and Ann Loveless both grew up in northwestern lower Michigan and love the nature and beauty of the outdoors. Steve is a fine art photographer\, and Ann is a textile artist. After exhibiting some of Ann’s textile designs inspired by Steve’s photography\, they had the idea to create works that morph a photograph into a textile. One aspect of the process is that it can trick the viewer into questioning what they are seeing and invite them to engage more with the work. Northwood Awakening\, a 25 by 5 foot piece that was the ArtPrize 2015 Public Vote Grand Prize winner\, will be on display.

DESCRIPTION:Laura Cavanagh is a Michigan native who graduated summa cum laude from the University of Michigan in 2011 with a BFA in Art & Design and a minor in Art History. Cavanagh’s work consists primarily of cut paper and mixed media. Working with these materials allows her to approach her work in much the same way a sculptor does: adding to and cutting away from. Cavanagh finds the artistic process to be deeply meditative. Cavanagh lives and has her studio in a historic home in downtown Rochester\, Michigan.

Crotchett uses wax because it is relevant to both eastern and early western artistic cultures. A professional artist for over 30 years\, Crotchett has exhibited nationally and internationally. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents When Pigs Fly: Oil Painting
DESCRIPTION:Professional artist and instructor Gregory Potter believes that anyone can develop artistic skill if they put the work into it. Potter’s teaching helps with that\, but he also shows his paintings in art fairs\, galleries and even Army barrack walls\, anywhere people enjoy art and laughing out loud. A flightless bird\, his flamingo isn’t deep or subversive\, but it does have a top hat and is riding on the back of a zebra that is standing in a nest powered by a propeller. Nothing unusual for a man who served four tours in the Middle East. Working in his home gallery in Franklin\, Indiana\, he is amused as viewers sometimes see his animals as “above all the B.S.” or “leaving without knowing where [they’re] going.”

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:FinTech Risks and Opportunities: An Interdisciplinary Approach
DESCRIPTION:This two-day event will bring together a wide range of researchers\, policymakers\, students\, and\npractitioners from various disciplines.\n\nFinancial technology\, or FinTech\, can be traced back to the introduction of the telegraph in the 1860s. Between then and the 1980s\, most FinTech advancements were record-keeping and data systems found in the back offices of financial institutions\, out of sight of the public. As internet technology became more available\, however\, FinTech evolved rapidly. Financial firms digitized their processes\, and companies began introducing consumer-facing products such as online banking and PayPal.\n\nToday\, FinTech continues to disrupt and to evolve\, not only in how financial products and services are delivered\, but who delivers them. Regulators and market participants face challenges in\nunderstanding and balancing the benefits of FinTech against potential risks. Innovation helps catalyze growth and new opportunities while generating new risks. Regulatory structures in place could fail to accommodate changes in the financial marketplace. Regulators may overreact to new technologies\, stifling innovation and locking in old forms of doing business. At the same time\, regulatory complacency can have disastrous results\, permitting the buildup of systemic risk or widespread consumer harms.\n\nThis conference will explore methodologies that the private sector\, researchers\, and policymakers\ncan use harness the upside potential of financial innovation while reducing the downside risks.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:American Berserk exhibition by Valerie Hegarty
DESCRIPTION:Throughout her career\, Brooklyn-based artist Valerie Hegarty has explored fundamental themes of American history and particularly the legacy of 19th-century American art\, addressing topics such as colonization\, slavery\, Manifest Destiny\, nationalism and environmental degradation. Elaborating upon visual references to the art-historical canon of North America\, Hegarty repurposes the ideological tenets of such works into a critical examination of the American legacy.\n\nThe show’s title\, American Berserk\, is borrowed from Philip Roth’s Pulitzer-winning novel American Pastoral\, in which he defines the inverse of the American pastoral ideal as the “indigenous American Berserk.” The show includes a group of ceramic sculptures and a mixed-media site-specific sculpture jutting from the wall. Hegarty’s anarchic\, revisionist take on American history as manifested in the nation’s artistic legacy is embodied in her fantastical works. The sculptures\, which seem imported from a parallel universe\, include watermelons that become animated\, explode and then decay\, sly depictions of George Washington as a series of topiaries\, spectral clipper ships sinking and calcifying into shells\, a branch breaking through the wall and piercing a painting of George Washington making his nose appear to grow and a duo of “fruit face” personae that survey the surreal proceedings.\n\nNote: This grouping of works is an edited restaging of the original show that was initially presented at Burning in Water gallery in New York in 2016.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gloss: Modeling Beauty
DESCRIPTION:Focusing on the prominent role of women as the subject of photography\, GLOSS: Modeling Beauty explores the shifting ideals of female beauty that pervade European and American visual culture from the 1920s to today. The exhibition features images of sleek and poised female models and celebrities destined for the glossy pages of fashion magazines and catalogs by leading photographers such as Edward Steichen\, Philippe Halsman\, Helmut Newton\, Andy Warhol\, and Guy Bourdin. Outside of commercial advertising practice\, documentary photographers Elliott Erwitt\, Joel Meyerowitz\, and Ralph Gibson portray candid images of fashionable women on city streets and mannequins in shop windows\, resulting in intriguing juxtapositions of haute couture and everyday life. And\nartists James Van Der Zee\, Eduardo Paolozzi\, and Nikki S. Lee employ the visual strategies of traditional fashion photography\, while offering alternative narratives to mainstream notions of female beauty.\n\nLead support for Gloss: Modeling Beauty is provided by Bank of America and Merrill Lynch. Additional generous support is provided by the University of Michigan Institute for Research on Women and Gender.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Moving Image: Portraiture
DESCRIPTION:Moving Image: Portraiture presents a contemporary spin on traditional notions of portraiture. In the video Towards An Architect\, Hannu Karjalainen portrays a fictional architect who is experiencing the response of people living in the structures he designed. Daniel Rozin’s Mirror No. 10 is driven by software\, written by the artist\, that generates a real-time reflection of the environment the screen is displayed in—specifically a live sketch of the viewer approaching the frame. Mesocosm (Northumberland\, UK) is an algorithmic work by Marina Zurkow that depicts the passage of time on the moors of Northeast England.\n\nMoving Image: Portraiture is the third of three exhibitions drawn from the collection of the Borusan Contemporary\, Istanbul\, which since 2011 has been focused on media arts. The works in this series address both formal concerns and conceptual topics\; many represent traditional categories such as portraiture and landscape that find new resonance when explored through the strategies of dynamic technology.\n\nLead support for Moving Image: Portraiture is provided by the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment and the University of Michigan Institute for the Humanities and Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Power Contained: The Art of Authority in Central and West Africa
DESCRIPTION:Before colonization\, complex hierarchical societies flourished in Central and West Africa. At their summits were a select few—kings and chiefs whose authority was derived from their direct connection to powerful ancestors and predecessors. These rulers were wrapped in expensive textiles or costly furs\, and covered in beads and precious metals\, materials that not only signaled their extraordinary status\, but were also intended to safely contain the great power they wielded. The famous minkisi (meaning “power figure”) sculptures of Central Africa were similarly activated through the addition of charged materials. Textiles\, animal skin\, metal\, and beads allowed the lifeless wooden carvings to be activated by local spiritual leaders in order to communicate with the realm of the ancestors and spirits. This exhibition explores the parallels between the adornment of the king’s physical body and minkisi. Drawing on works from UMMA’s collection and several loans\, the exhibition demonstrates how authority was expressed and power contained across a range of historical cultures in Nigeria\, Ghana\, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Cameroon.\n\nLead support for Power Contained: The Art of Authority in Central and West Africa is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost and the African Studies Center.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:AE285 Undergraduate Seminar | Wastes in Space: Closed-Loop Life Support
DESCRIPTION:Sarah Shull’s 16-year career at NASA Johnson Space Center has spanned 9 years in Mission Control\, 6 years in the Engineering Directorate and 1 year in the Exploration Mission Planning Office. This talk with touch a bit on all three areas\, with a technical emphasis on her work developing reliable\, energy-efficient\, and low-mass spacecraft systems to provide environmental control and life support systems (ECLSS) critical to enabling long duration human missions beyond low Earth orbit (LEO). \n\nNASA’s work on life support systems (LSS) focuses on four areas: architecture and systems engineering for life support systems\, environmental monitoring\, air revitalization\, and wastewater processing and water management. Starting with the international space station (ISS) LSS systems as a point of departure (where applicable)\, the goal is to address discrete LSS technology gaps\, improve the reliability of LSS systems and advance exploration systems towards integrated testing on the ISS. This talk will elaborate on the work done to-date on the goals above as well as an overview of NASA’s current plans for exploration beyond LEO.\n\n\nAbout the speaker...\n\nSarah Shull works in the Exploration Mission Planning Office at NASA's Johnson Space Center where she is the Technical Monitor on the Sierra Nevada Corporation NextSTEP Habitation contract and the Systems Engineering Lead for the Exploration Systems Division End-to-end Mission Performance Team. Prior to these roles\, Sarah spent six years in the Crew and Thermal Systems Division where she was the Deputy Project Manager for the Advanced Exploration Systems (AES) Life Support Systems Project and the group lead for the Environmental Control and Life Support Systems (ECLSS) Technology Development Team. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Making A Difference: Women\, Art and Activism in South Africa Today
DESCRIPTION:Women’s collaborations continue to lead the way in a number of critical human rights issues in post-apartheid South Africa: historical memory and heritage\; housing and land rights\; HIV/AIDS\; LGBTI rights and the right to safety at home and at work without fear of violence. The ongoing struggles for these rights are usually intertwined. \n\nAt the UN Women Summit in May 2016\, the Executive Director\, Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka\, specifically highlighted the critical importance of women’s role\, “Experience and research show that when women are included in humanitarian action\, the entire community benefits…Women must be included in decision-making about the forms of assistance\, means of delivery\, and the provision of the protection and economic and social empowerment opportunities they need so they can be agents of change.” (http//www.unwomen.org/en/news/in-focus/humanitarian-actionhashtagsthash.RBIoHrzc.dpuf)\n\nThis lecture argues that while the conventional political terrain in South Africa appears to be stalling on delivering the fruits of a democratic process\, a new space for effective political activism on the ground has been opened up by women makers and artists. The lecture explores some of the extraordinary projects which have taken the initiative to transform complex social environments still blighted by the devastating legacy of the apartheid years and the economic and health challenges presented by years of official denialism in the face of the AIDS/HIV pandemic. It argues that gender is a critical component in the wider social efficacy of these art projects.\n\nThe lecture contends that the art and creative collaborations examined in this research has lent agency to women activists and has become an effective means of challenging the authorities and raising awareness of women’s rights. It argues that the mental and physical health benefits arising from these processes have enabled the confident transmission of accessible and lifesaving knowledge.\n\nSpeaker Bio:\n\nAnnie E. Coombes is Professor of Material and Visual Culture in the Department of Art History and Founding Director of the Peltz Gallery at Birkbeck\, University of London. Coombes is an art and cultural historian specializing in the history of the culture of British colonialism and its legacy in the present\, particularly in Africa (Kenya and South Africa) and in former settler colonies. Her prize-winning books include: History After Apartheid: Visual Culture and Public Memory in a Democratic South Africa (2003) and Reinventing Africa: Museums\, Material Culture and Popular Imagination in Late Victorian and Edwardian England (1994).\n\nImage credit: Nondumiso Hlwele\, Body Map\, 2002

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Alan J. Hunt Memorial Lecture: Christopher S. Chen\, M.D.\, Ph.D.
DESCRIPTION:In vivo\, local tissue structure defines the cellular environment\, constraining how cells interact with surrounding extracellular matrix substrates\, neighboring cells\, soluble growth factors\, and physical forces. These “microenvironmental” cues in turn play a central role in regulating the behavior of individual resident cells\, such as proliferation\, differentiation\, migration\, and suicide. Here\, I will present 3D culture platforms that are able to recapitulate more complex functions of biological tissues\, and how we are using them to gain deeper insights into disease and physiology.\n\nRefreshments in the lobby following the lecture.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EEB MUSEUMS Monthly Seminar: Michigan's First Survey and Pre-settlement Biodiversity
DESCRIPTION:Michigan is unique in that immediately after achieving statehood in\n1837\, the fledgling Legislature authorized a comprehensive \"First\nGeological Survey\" of the State's natural resources. This included not\nonly geology and soils\, but also timber resources\, and a survey of\nplants and animals\, and it included the collection of specimens which\nbecame the foundation of the present day Museum and Herbarium\ncollections. The plant collections are especially extensive\, but were\npoorly labeled and suffered from past curatorial practises that\ndiminished their value. But\, reconstructing the data and itineraries\nfrom several sources provides a detailed view of the flora and\, to\nsome degree\, the vegetation of the state before extensive modification\nby European settlement\, as well as insight into local extinctions and\nother changes in the flora.

SUMMARY:Meeting:Graduate School Info Session
DESCRIPTION:Linguistics PhD student Rachel Elizabeth Weissler is hosting an information session for undergraduates interested in applying to graduate school! Before attending U-M\, Rachel was a part of the Institute for Recruitment of Teachers (IRT). IRT is a program that helped her apply to graduate school by covering the cost of applying and providing GRE prep. \n\nWhat is IRT? \nThe IRT addresses the lack of diversity in the nation's teaching faculties by recruiting outstanding students of color and other scholars committed to diversity\, counseling them through the graduate school application process\, and advocating for sufficient funding for advanced study. Since 1990\, the IRT has built a national consortium of colleges and universities that are eager to enroll IRT students to diversify their graduate student bodies and to expand the pipeline of educators to teach\, counsel\, and administrate in American schools\, colleges\, and universities. \n\nFrom early September through mid-November\, all IRT participants receive the following support throughout the graduate school application process at no charge\, which include: \n1. Individualized support and extensive counseling as fellows choose graduate programs and apply to a renowned consortium of graduate schools across the country \n2. Application fee waivers for up to 12 consortium schools \n3. Assistance in fine-tuning statements of purpose\, resumes\, and writing samples \n\nAdditionally\, the IRT sponsors a Summer Workshop\, a paid internship on the Phillips Academy campus\, located just outside of Boston\, MA. Participants engage in a graduate-level curriculum of critical\, cultural\, and educational theory during an intense four-week program\; students and faculty work together nine hours each day\, seven days a week.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:HET Seminars | Cosmology of a Fine-Tuned SUSY Higgs
DESCRIPTION:I will discuss some work in progress that explores whether a mildly fine-tuned Higgs boson\, as in (mini-)split supersymmetry\, can have interesting or observable cosmological consequences. As moduli fields oscillate\, the Higgs can respond and temporarily acquire very large values along a D-flat direction. Possible consequences include a burst of gravitational wave production and an altered estimate of the number of e-folds of inflation.

As science communicators we need to adjust to the drastically different landscape as online education broadens\, becomes more dynamic and pressures lecturers and other couriers of science to innovate or become obsolete. There are some simple approaches to widen the reach of your science and presentations to attract and hold people's attention and interest. Martin Pepper's talk will illustrate how technology and social media is transforming communication and will convey the basics of addictive science communication and how it applies to spreading information in all formats.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:ISP Lecture. Eating the Audience’s Brain: Persianate Sociability in 18th-Century Delhi’s Poetry Salons
DESCRIPTION:The grave of 18th-century Persian-language poet ʿAbd al-Qadir Bedil (d. 1720) hosted a posthumous literary salon from 1721 to roughly 1760. In anecdotes and verse\, poets’ memories of the posthumous salon and its verse reveal how non-elite social actors shaped the Persianate literary sphere of Mughal India. Early modern literary spheres and shrine spaces have remained elusive subjects for social historians of South Asia\, greater Iran\, and Central Asia. My analysis of this shrine-based salon\, as memorialized in period diaries\, focuses on how localized/trans-regional textual processes mirrored the material settings in which they were deployed. New approaches to understanding available historical material\, such as those focusing on literary modes of representation\, are needed to document late-Mughal cultural history. From this position\, we see how the socio-literary space of the shrine compels a vernacular appraisal of social institutions and linguistic spheres in which literary practices are viewed as ambiguous modes of pre-colonial sociability motivated by multilingual social actors.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Journal Club
DESCRIPTION:The paper by McShane et al\, \"Abandon Statistical Significance\,\" was selected for our last Journal Club meeting of this term.\n\nAbstract\n\nIn science publishing and many areas of research\, the status quo is a lexicographic decision rule in which any result is first required to have a p-value that surpasses the 0.05 threshold and only then is consideration—often scant—given to such factors as prior and related evidence\, plausibility of mechanism\, study design and data quality\, real world costs and benefits\, novelty of finding\, and other factors that vary by research domain. There have been recent proposals to change the p-value threshold\, but instead we recommend abandoning the null hypothesis significance testing paradigm entirely\, leaving p-values as just one of many pieces of information with no privileged role in scientific publication and decision making. We argue that this radical approach is both practical and sensible.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:LECTURE: ANANYA ROY\, \"THE CITY IN THE AGE OF TRUMPISM: FROM SANCTUARY TO ABOLITION\"
DESCRIPTION:Ananya Roy is Professor of Urban Planning\, Social Welfare and Geography and inaugural Director of the Institute on Inequality and Democracy at UCLA Luskin. She holds The Meyer and Renee Luskin Chair in Inequality and Democracy. Previously she was on the faculty at the University of California\, Berkeley.\nAnanya’s research and scholarship has a determined focus on poverty and inequality and lies in four domains: how the urban poor in cities from Kolkata to Chicago face and fight eviction\, foreclosure\, and displacement\; how global financialization\, working in varied realms from microfinance to real-estate speculation\, creates new markets in debt and risk\; how the efforts to manage and govern the problem of poverty reveal the contradictions and limits of liberal democracy\; how new programs of welfare and human development are being demanded and made in the global South. Ananya is the author of several books including Poverty Capital: Microfinance and the Making of Development (Routledge\, 2010)\, which received the Paul Davidoff book award from ACSP. Her most recent book is Encountering Poverty: Thinking and Acting in an Unequal World (UC Press\, 2016). During the last year\, Ananya’s public scholarship has challenged white supremacy and white power. From the short video\, 3 Truths About Trumpism\, to the organization of a nationwide day of Teach.Organize.Resist\, her work mobilizes the power of knowledge to “divest from whiteness.”

SUMMARY:Performance:Ragas in Autumn
DESCRIPTION:An evening of Hindustani Classical music where Mr. Abhik Mukherjee will be playing the sitar (an ancient Indian Classical stringed instrument) and Mr. Amit K. Chatterjee will be accompanying him on the tabla (Indian percussion). \n\nHindustani (Indian) classical music is developed through two interwoven elements: raga and tala. Raga is the melodic element and is crafted by improvisation on fixed patterns of ascent and descent. Conversely\, tala is the rhythmic structure on which the melody is laid. \n\nHindu philosophy provides a spiritual parallel through which the listener can experience the melding of raga-tala. Shiva\, god of time\, represents the stable rhythm of the tala\, while Shakti\, the goddess of creation\, is the melodic dance over the rhythm. Through the play of Shiva and Shakti the universe is born and reborn across cosmic time. The blend of raga-tala represents this play.\n\nHindustani classical music also draws inspiration from the hours of the day. Every day is divided into eight sections (ashta prahar)\, with each three-hour section having certain ragas best suited to its mood. \n\nIn this concert evening ragas will be performed that\, through the versatile structure of raga-tala\, will encourage the audience to experience the range of emotions associated with this time of the day.\n\nAbhik Mukherjee is a Kolkata-born sitar player of the Etawah-Imdadkhani gharana. Some of his memorable concerts include performances for the inauguration of the Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr. memorial (Washington D.C.)\; at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York City)\; at the Indian Habitat Center (Delhi)\; on Doordarshan (Kolkata)\; and a summer tour of Italy\, Germany\, and Switzerland. Abhik currently lives in New York City and is a founding member of Brooklyn Raga Massive\, an Indian classical music artists’ collective.\n\nThis is a free event where the audience gets to interact with the artists one on one after the performance!

SUMMARY:Performance:MUSKET presents: Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson
DESCRIPTION:BLOODY BLOODY ANDREW JACKSON explores the life of America's controversial seventh president from his early days as a child to his reign in the White House. With the country severely divided along political and financial lines\, Jackson climbs from populist rabble-rouser to President of the United States. Along the way\, he meets his wife\, Rachel\, takes on the Founding Fathers – and rocks like no political figure has ever rocked before\, with the help of an onstage trio and an entourage of singing\, joking cohorts. Dubbed by many historians as “the American Hitler\,” Andrew Jackson and his story cause us to question what causes the rise of such a president — and who is responsible for creating the legacy that he leaves behind.

The current exhibit\, Flights of Fancy\, features birds in colorful\, light-filled works.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents The Cut Ups: Paper Collage
DESCRIPTION:Laura Cavanagh is a Michigan native who graduated summa cum laude from the University of Michigan in 2011 with a BFA in Art & Design and a minor in Art History. Cavanagh’s work consists primarily of cut paper and mixed media. Working with these materials allows her to approach her work in much the same way a sculptor does: adding to and cutting away from. Cavanagh finds the artistic process to be deeply meditative. Cavanagh lives and has her studio in a historic home in downtown Rochester\, Michigan.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Under Covers: Encaustic & Mixed Media
DESCRIPTION:Cat Crotchett’s current work combines elements of eastern and western cultural patterns in fragments that together form something different than their individual parts. These images represent an intersection of information as well as ideas of cultural appropriation\, assimilation\, fragmentation and alteration. Crotchett uses wax because it is relevant to both eastern and early western artistic cultures. A professional artist for over 30 years\, Crotchett has exhibited nationally and internationally. She is a professor at Western Michigan University and lives in Kalamazoo\, Michigan.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:BECOMING DIGITAL: WORKSHOP 03 WITH VIVIAN LEE AND JAMES MACGILLIVRAY OF LAMAS

The project includes a seminar course\, three weekend workshops\, a conference\, an exhibition\, and a series of public conversations. \nWorkshop 03: Vivian Lee and James Macgillivray of LAMAS\nNovember 17 - 20\, 2017\nLAMAS is an international architectural practice. Among other things the studio looks at ornament\, optical illusions\, and lazy forms. They have experimented on these topics through academic research\, in temporary installations\, and on permanent buildings. The office is equally invested in advancing conceptual discourse and the performance of architecture in practice.\nFriday\, November 17\, 2017 at 12pm in the A.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Matisse Drawings: Curated by Ellsworth Kelly from The Pierre and Tana Matisse Foundation Collection
DESCRIPTION:\"Matisse Drawings: Curated by Ellsworth Kelly from The Pierre and Tana Matisse Foundation Collection\" showcases the master draftsmanship of two of the most significant artists of the twentieth century: Henri Matisse (1869–1954) and Ellsworth Kelly (1923–2015). Curated by Kelly in 2014\, the exhibition speaks to his admiration for Matisse\, as well as to the centrality of drawing in both artists’ practices. To accompany the forty-five rarely exhibited works by Matisse made in the first half of the 20th century\, which reveal his process and range of creativity as a draftsman\, Kelly selected nine of his own lithographic drawings that derive from his time in France during the 1960s\, when the American artist studied Matisse’s sketches and studies of nature and human figures. Together\, the works by Matisse and Kelly form a thought-provoking\, visually striking artistic dialogue\, allowing viewers to experience one artist through the eyes of another and to immerse themselves in the pleasures of close looking.\n \n\"Matisse Drawings: Curated by Ellsworth Kelly from The Pierre and Tana Matisse Foundation Collection\" is organized by the American Federation of Arts and the Mount Holyoke College Art Museum in collaboration with The Pierre and Tana Matisse Foundation.\n\nThis exhibition was made possible by the generous support of the Eugene V. and Clare E. Thaw Charitable Trust and The Pierre and Tana Matisse Foundation. Additional support provided by the JFM Foundation and Mrs. Donald M. Cox.\n\nLead support for the local presentation of this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund\, and the University of Michigan Ross School of Business and the Department of the History of Art.
