These tools didn’t merely lay the foundation for contemporary computer science but became the foundation of a new definition of rationality itself\, reshaping how we judge human decision making. The Irrational Decision traces how a computational framework designed for machines came to define rationality for people in economics\, public policy\, and popular culture.\n\nThis talk will explore success stories in accelerating computers\, regulating pharmaceuticals\, and deploying electronic commerce. The successes reveal a common pattern. Automated decision systems thrive in well-defined spaces with clear rules and measurable goals. However\, the same systems produce results ranging from brittle to absurd outside those controlled settings. The elements carbon and sulfur in particular play essential roles in the regulation of global surface temperature. Carbon in the form of CO2 acts as a greenhouse gas\, insulating and warming the planet\, while sulfur in the form of aerosols (e.g.\, SO2) contributes to cloud formation and global cooling. Geologic processes control and moderate global climate on long timescales (millions of years)\; yet\, on shorter timescales (tens of thousands of years)\, solid Earth carbon and/or sulfur release may drive environmental catastrophe and mass extinction We will explore a few aspects of this cycle from the perspective of a metamorphic petrologist. Rock metamorphism is an often-neglected part of the geologic volatile cycling\, but I will argue that it may be of paramount importance to our planetary habitability. Drawing examples from Ancient mountain-building and Mesozoic mass extinction\, an observation-driven approach is used to quantify some of these interactions. Finally\, we will explore volatile cycling at coronae on Venus and consider implications for the evolution of its deep mantle and surface environment. Since 2008 he has released a string of critically-acclaimed albums and toured heavily in the U.S. and abroad. Paste Magazine wrote of his music: “Unless your surname is Dylan\, Waits\, Ritter or Prine\, you could face-palm yourself to death trying to pen songs half as inspired.\" Additionally\, he is the creator and host of the popular podcast The Working Songwriter.\n\nSoon before Willie Watson turned 18\, he met God in an apple orchard. Or at the very least\, he met there a man named Ruby Love\, the older friend of a high-school buddy who had an enormous Martin guitar and a seemingly bigger understanding of the American folk songbook. Watson was existentially thirsty: A high-school dropout from upstate New York’s Finger Lakes\, he was fast on his way to his first heartbreak and in a first band that didn’t take itself seriously enough. But that night in an apple orchard that had always seemed magical\, at a graduation party for one of his bandmates and best friends\, Watson and Love sang a few of those old songs together—“Worried Man Blues” and “Tennessee Waltz.” It was the first time Watson had cried while singing\, the first time he had made the connection between making music and making sense of his life. He never saw Ruby Love again\, but within months of that foundational 1997 rendezvous\, he met the musicians with whom he’d soon start Old Crow Medicine Show. Call it revelation\, fate\, resurrection\, whatever you will\; for Watson\, more than a quarter-century later\, it was a duet with the divine. It’s a course where\, per the syllabus\, students \"develop the capacity to work independently by identifying\, exploring\, and pursuing a single independent project that involves multiple iterations.\" \n\nStamps Lecturer & Student Exhibitions Coordinator Sally Clegg notes\, \"Each student takes their own path\, encountering questions that can shape the direction of their creative practice—how do I manage my time? How much constraint vs. freedom do I thrive on? What subject matter do I care about most deeply? How do my ideas about my future goals intersect with the work I want to make now?\" At the end of the semester\, students formally report on their experience in a presentation called the Sophomore Review\, and a faculty panel offers individualized feedback. \n\nInstalled throughout the Art & Architecture Building\, the Second Year Studio Exhibition showcases the art and design work created in this pivotal course by our rising third-year and transfer students\, and invites first-year students and other newcomers to explore both the building and the creative possibilities ahead. The show features 50 students who have volunteered to participate\, yet it honors every Stamps major who reaches the SYS milestone. The pieces on view span a wide array of media and capture a specific moment in each maker’s path: experiments in previously unfamiliar methods\, emergent passions\, creative risks taken\, iterations and reiterations\, and the seeds of so much future work.\n\nAs Course Coordinator\, Stamps Assistant Professor Pedram Baldari both teaches and works directly with all the faculty overseeing each section to collaboratively support the entire class. He offers this reflection on the diverse collection of work on view in this year’s exhibition.\n\nThese works engage a wide range of questions and concerns. Students investigate memory\, identity\, materiality\, ecology\, technology\, labor\, social relationships\, and the built environment through equally diverse formal approaches. While these subjects recur across the exhibition\, what stands out most is not a dominant thematic direction\, but a shared commitment to sustained inquiry.\n\nSYS is intentionally structured around a different learning model than project-based courses. Rather than responding to predetermined assignments\, students identify their own questions and spend an entire semester developing them through research\, experimentation\, critique\, and multiple iterations. The emphasis is not on arriving quickly at a resolved outcome\, but on cultivating the capacity to work independently\, remain responsive to new discoveries\, and allow the project itself to evolve through sustained engagement.\n\nAs a result\, the exhibition presents more than a collection of finished works. It documents different ways of investigating\, testing\, and refining ideas. Some students advance through material experimentation\, others through drawing\, installation\, performance\, digital media\, social engagement\, or speculative approaches. Each project reflects a distinct methodology that has developed through repeated cycles of making\, reflection\, critique\, and revision. In a sense\, the dialectical process generated by the nature of this course is the most significant thread connecting this year’s exhibition. It marks a point at which students begin moving beyond solving assignments toward constructing independent practices\, developing the habits of inquiry\, critical reflection\, and experimentation that will continue to shape their work well beyond SYS.\n\n\n\nExhibiting Artists and Designers\n
