SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Art of Resistance in Early America
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition addresses the theme of the LSA Fall 2023 semester at the University of Michigan: \"Arts & Resistance.\" This exhibit asks us to think about resistance in different settings\, and in different forms. What \"arts\" did Americans in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries use to resist various forms of power? The exhibit aims to show how the people of our nation's past tried to answer those questions\n\nExhibit Hours: Monday - Friday - Noon - 4 pm\n\nLink to online exhibit:https://clements.umich.edu/exhibit/the-art-of-resistance/

SUMMARY:Exhibition:XR/XF: Extended Realities\, Extended Feminisms Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:XR/XF: Extended Realities\, Extended Feminisms brings together local\, national\, and international artists to create a site-specific multimedia exhibition and series of events on the University of Michigan campus and across the city of Ann Arbor. The exhibition will take place in various locations\, including a shipping container - the XR/XF pod - that will travel between 2 locations in Ann Arbor during the first two weeks of April.\n\nThe city of Ann Arbor has always been feminized. The story goes that in 1824\, John Allen and Elisha W. Rumsey founded the town and named it after their wives\, who were both named Ann. Since then\, the city has been anthropomorphized as a feminine body throughout the years. In the 1980s\, the University of Michigan’s football rivals in Ohio invented the infamous slogan\, “Ann Arbor is a Whore!” as a method to jeer at the opposition. Since then\, this offensive slogan has spread across the US and reappears every Fall during football season in Ann Arbor\, proliferating through both physical and digital objects. As one recent social media commenter notes: “That's what happens when you have a chick name for your city.”\n\nWith this project\, we strike/suspend gender from the city’s name: Ann Arbor is neither trophy wife nor whore. Instead\, we pose Ann Arbor as a feminist cyborg\, a feminist map\, and a creative\, participatory organism. We construct the body of the city differently\, with artistic intervention and cyberfeminist means: physical and digital installation\, activations of public space\, music\, performances\, and workshops. From the Bell Tower on central campus to the parking lot of the Liberty Annex\, we offer a creative activation that is both physical and digital and a fluid/complex/distributed image of the city through both XR and feminist means.\n\nCurated by Alina Nazmeeva and Yvette Granata. In collaboration with Tiffany Ng\, Tyler Musgrave\, Julie Zhu\, and Anıl Çamcı. Supported by the Arts Initiative at University of Michigan.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Intertemporal Hedging and Trade in Repeated Games with Recursive Utility
DESCRIPTION:Two key features distinguish the general class of recursive preferences from the standard model of dynamic choice: (i) agents may care about the intertemporal distribution of risk\, and (ii) their rates of time preference\, rather than being fixed\, may vary with the level of consumption. We investigate what these features imply in the context of a repeated strategic interaction. First\, we show that opportunities for intertemporal trade may expand the set of feasible payoffs relative to that in a static interaction. Two distinct sources for such trade are identified: endogenous heterogeneity in the players’ rates of time preference and a hedging motive pertaining to the intertemporal distribution of risk. The set of equilibrium payoffs may on the other hand shrink drastically as many efficient outcomes become unsustainable no matter the level of patience. This “antifolk” result occurs when the players prefer stage outcomes to be positively correlated rather than independent across time. Intuitively\, such preferences make it inefficient to offset short-term losses with future gains\, while this is needed to ensure that security levels are met on path. We also establish a folk theorem: if security levels are met on path\, such play can be sustained in a subgame perfect equilibrium provided that the players are sufficiently patient.\n\nThis talk is presented by the Economic Theory Seminar\, sponsored by the Department of Economics with generous gifts given through the Mark Harms Fund and the Economics Strategic Fund.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:AIM Seminar: Filtered volume fraction fluctuations in dilute\, non-collisional\, particle-laden flow
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Turbulent particle-laden flows give rise to spatial heterogeneity (e.g. clustering) characterized by two-point statistics. Most coarse-grained (i.e. two fluid) models only solve for one-point moments\, limiting reproduction of important two-phase flow statistics. In this talk\, we present set of equations describing the evolution of these flows that include fluctuating components of filtered fields --- a description of the level of clustering present in these flows. For dilute heavy particles settling in homogeneous isotropic turbulence\, the averaged filtered drag and filtered Reynolds-stress like term that dictates enhanced settling is correlated to this description of volume fraction fluctuation. A data-driven approach that efficiently traverses parameter space in direct numerical simulations to inform closures is proposed\, providing both descriptive insights and directions for future modeling. Further\, a numerical crossflow experiment is proposed\, yielding several advantages over traditional forced homogeneous isotropic turbulence for the study of turbulent particle-laden flows. The filtered volume fraction is shown to be valuable in that it may enable better fits for unclosed quantities related to particle drag and particle-phase momentum flux in coarse-grained simulations.\n\n\nContact: Silas Alben

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Belyi's theorem
DESCRIPTION:Belyi’s theorem states that a smooth projective complex algebraic curve (i.e. a compact Riemann surface) can be defined over a number field if and only if it can be expressed as a branched covering of the projective line ramified over at most 3 points\, providing a purely topological characterization of an arithmetic condition. I will present a proof of this result and sketch how it leads to Grothendieck’s theory of dessin d'enfants.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:SocioCultural Anthropology Colloquium: \"Follow the Water: Connecting Hydrospheres in the Arctic and the Gulf Coast\"
DESCRIPTION:\"As temperature records are broken across the world\, the melting of glaciers and ice sheets is accelerating. Rising surface temperatures likewise guarantee new conditions of drought and flood\, exacerbated by a slowing jet stream that will tend to stall weather systems in unpredictable ways. Our changing cryospheres and hydrospheres promise misery to millions across the planet. But they also reveal forms of material connectivity that could potentially be mobilized in the struggle against climate change and the petroculture that produced it. In this presentation\, we juxtapose Cymene Howe’s elemental ethnography of the transformation of ice into water in the Arctic with Dominic Boyer’s research on how Houstonians are seeking to adapt to the increasing presence of stormwater in their lives. We discuss a concept we call “hydrological globalization” to highlight the elemental connections and cultural impacts that follow from the redistribution of water across the planet. We also highlight how hydrological precarity creates new possibilities for alliances across the world built out of shared Anthropocene experiences like droughts\, fires and flooding.\"\n\nDominic Boyer is an anthropologist\, media maker and environmental researcher who teaches at Rice University where he served as Founding Director of the Center for Energy and Environmental Research in the Human Sciences (2013-2019). He recently published Energopolitics (Duke UP\, 2019)\, which analyzes the politics of wind power development in Southern Mexico and Hyposubjects (Open Humanities Press\, 2021)\, an experimental collaboration with Timothy Morton concerning politics in the Anthropocene. With Cymene Howe\, he made a documentary film about Iceland’s first major glacier (Okjökull) lost to climate change\, Not Ok: a little movie about a small glacier at the end of the world (2018). In August 2019\, together with Icelandic collaborators they installed a memorial to Okjökull’s passing\, an event that attracted media attention from around the world and which caused The Economist to create their first-ever obituary for a non-human. During 2021-22 he held an artist residency at The Factory in Djúpavík\, Iceland\, and was a Berggruen Institute Fellow in Los Angeles working on a project on “Electric Futures.” His most recent book is titled No More Fossils (U Minnesota Press\, 2023) a discussion of fossil fuel fossils and what is to be done about them.\n\nCymene Howe is Professor of Anthropology and Founding Co-Director of the Science and Technology Studies Program at Rice University. Her books include Intimate Activism (Duke 2013) and Ecologics: Wind and Power in the Anthropocene (Duke 2019)\, and the co-edited collections Anthropocene Unseen (Punctum 2020)\, Solarities: Elemental Encounters and Refractions (Punctum 2023)\, and The Johns Hopkins Guide to Critical and Cultural Theory. Her research has been funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation\, the Fulbright Commission\, and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and she was awarded The Berlin Prize for transatlantic dialogue in the arts\, humanities\, and public policy. Her current research examines the changing dynamics between people and bodies of ice in the Arctic region and sea level adaptation in coastal cities around the world. Out of her research in the Arctic region\, she co-created documentary film Not Ok: A Little Movie about a Small Glacier at the End of the World (2019) and the memorial for Okjökull\, the world’s first funeral for a glacier fallen to climate change.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:“Rhapsody & Ruin: 'Porgy & Bess' and the Story of America\,” Dr. Daphne Brooks
DESCRIPTION:This lecture mines the archive in order to trace the legacies of racial performance and racial and gender violence made manifest in 1935’s *Porgy and Bess*\, one of the most famous and influential American operas of all time. By way of archival materials\, it interrogates the entanglements of the opera’s architects – DuBose Heyward and George and Ira Gershwin – with the afterlives of slavery. It considers the lasting impact said entanglements have had on the music of *Porgy and Bess* as well as the aesthetic strategies of generations of Black women genius culture workers navigating the Gershwin and Heyward archive.\n\nDAPHNE A. BROOKS is William R. Kenan\, Jr. Professor of African American Studies\, American Studies\, Women’s\, Gender\, and Sexuality Studies\, and Music at Yale University. She is the author of *Bodies in Dissent: Spectacular Performances of Race and Freedom\, 1850-1910* (Durham\, NC: Duke UP\, 2006)\; *Jeff Buckley’s* Grace (New York: Continuum\, 2005) and *Liner Notes for the Revolution: The Intellectual Life of Black Feminist Sound* (Harvard University\, February 2021). Brooks has authored numerous articles on race\, gender\, performance and popular music culture as well as the liner notes for *The Complete Tammi Terrell* (Universal A&R\, 2010)\, for *Take a Look: Aretha Franklin Complete on Columbia* for Prince’s *Sign O’ The Times* deluxe box set and for Omnivore Records reissues of Nina Simone’s early releases on Bethlehem. Brooks’s writing has appeared in *The New York Times*\, *The Nation*\, *The Guardian*\, Pitchfork.com and other outlets.\n\n*This program is organized by the Department of Musicology at the University of Michigan School of Music\, Theatre & Dance.*

In this fascinating uncovering of New York (and American) history\, in a post-9/11 world\, emerges a resistance against being reduced to stereotypes\, and against being restricted by the many borders we draw around ourselves. –Bedatri Choudhury\n\nAbout the series:\n(Re)Emergence: Asian American Histories and Futures\, a collaboration between Asian American studies scholars and the Institute for the Humanities\, is a series of events committed to interdisciplinary exploration and community engagement. The series brings together filmmakers\, creative writers\, scholars\, and activists to think through diverse Asian American histories and how we might learn from them to shape radically different futures. SUMMARY:Performance:The Cherry Orchard
DESCRIPTION:Anton Chekhov’s *The Cherry Orchard* is considered one of the great classic works of Russian theatre\, having been translated into countless languages and produced all over the world. Some of the greatest American playwrights – such as Arthur Miller\, David Mamet\, and Eugene O’Neill – were directly influenced by Chekhov.\n\nAfter a prolonged absence following the death of her son\, noblewoman Lyobov Ranevskaya returns to her estate and finds the cherry orchard on the estate in full bloom. Despite this outward sign of prosperity\, her home is on the verge of financial ruin. Along with her brother\, Gaev\, Lyobov struggles to maintain the façade of gentility as their world crumbles around them.\n\nWritten by Anton Chekhov\nTranslated by Paul Schmidt\nDirected by Daniel Cantor\n\nFUN FACTS: Is *The Cherry Orchard* a comedy or a tragedy? It depends on who you ask. According to artlark.org\, “The original intention of Chekhov was for *The Cherry Orchard* to be a comedy\; yet\, [Constantin] Stanislavsky [famous actor/director and creator of the eponymous Stanislavsky method\, known as ‘method acting’] turned it into a tragedy.” Russian literature scholar Svetlana Evdokimova quotes Stanislavsky as saying\, “‘This is not a comedy\, not a farce\, as you wrote\; it is a tragedy\, whatever outlet for a better life you may have offered in the last act… I hear you saying: “Wait a minute\, but this is a farce…” No\, for an ordinary person this is a tragedy.’” Yet this conflict is what makes *The Cherry Orchard* such good theatre. As Evdokimova says\, “Clearly\, the source of the comic lies not in the play’s fabula or situation\, not in what happens\, but in how it happens and to whom it happens. The enigmatic\, captivating\, and almost mesmerising effect that *The Cherry Orchard* continues to exert on its audience is to be found in its good-humoured but foolish protagonists – both charming in their gullibility and pathetic in their utter confusion.”

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Propositions to Progress: A Working Atlas of the Global South
DESCRIPTION:Historically\, maps have served as a panoptic technology\, assisting imperial powers in governance\, discipline\, and control. In this exhibit\, internationally renowned Filipino artist Cian Dayrit acts as a counter-cartographer\, reclaiming mapmaking as an emancipatory activity.\n\nDayrit’s artworks\, embroidered on textiles or painted over collages of colonial-era maps\, plot the extraction of natural resources\, land grabbing\, and dispossession and displacement in his native Philippines. At the same time\, their resistant lines summon new imaginaries out of the overlaps between places and memories.\n\nDayrit’s practice is critically and practically informed by the narratives of Filipino communities. Items exhibited alongside his artwork are the result of map-drawing workshops the artist has convened with rural\, urban\, and indigenous communities across the Philippines. Propositions to Progress invites you to engage in the collaborative endeavor to activate alternative territories from the ground up.\n\nCian Dayrit is an interdisciplinary artist exploring colonialism and ethnography\, archaeology\, history\, and mythology. Dayrit subverts the language of the state\, museum\, and military to visualize the contradictions on which these institutions are built. He studied at the University of the Philippines.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Souq Stories: Gaza Lives
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit is an extension of Souq Stories (https://souqstories.insaniyyat.org/)\, which was displayed in 2021 in all seven of the historic markets it depicts in Gaza\, Nazareth\, Acre\, Nablus\, Jerusalem\, Khalil\, and Jaffa. Its youth group organizers aimed to bolster Palestinian unity across the systemic barriers — colonial divides\, military checkpoints\, walls\, etc. — that fragment the lives of people living in Palestine. \n\nSouq Stories: Gaza Lives brings us to present-day Gaza\, sharing the stories of\, and images captured by\, young journalists and photographers who have continued to document the realities of life in Palestine. It also honors one among them\, Fouad Abu Khammash\, who was killed in January 2024 in an Israeli bomb attack on Gaza.\n\n< The exhibit includes images of people suffering the aftermath of the ongoing violence. >\n\nThis exhibit was curated by Souq Stories team members Shareef Sarhan and Waed Abbas in partnership with U-M students Amir Marshi\, Zainab Hakim\, Mariam Odeh\, and Vivian M. Nguyen. It’s offered in conjunction with this year’s Palestine Awareness Week\, an annual series of educational events related to Palestinian history\, culture\, and politics. Presented in association with Insaniyyat: Society of Palestinian Anthropologists.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Orson Welles as Family Man: Son\, Husband\, Father
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit provides a unique glimpse into the actor/director Orson Welles’ private life. Unlike previous U-M Library exhibits that focused on the artist at work\, this display shows him in informal and familial environments\, revealing a depth and complexity of character that are often overshadowed by his fame and professional achievements. The photographs and documents displayed showcase a variety of emotional tones — warmth\, humor\, tenderness\, and passion. Candid and relaxed more than posed\, they are similar to most people's pictures in old family albums.\n\nCulled from the Orson Welles-Beatrice Welles materials that are part of the Mavericks & Makers collection within the U-M Library’s Special Collections Research Center\, each photo or letter tells a story of a connection Welles held dearly. The materials included are from two periods: the late 1920s and early 1930s\, when Welles was a teenager\, and the mid-1950s to early 1960s\, during the early years of his marriage to his third wife\, Paola Mori. \n\nIt should be noted that Welles’s personal life was messy at best. Other collections housed at U-M that include personal materials related to Welles document his first and second marriages\, including the Welles-Feder Collection and the Wilson-Welles Collection. The items on display here were saved by his third and final child\, Beatrice Welles\, and reflect her childhood memories of her parents.\n\nThe exhibit is available during Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours (https://umlib.us/hatchergalleryexhibits).

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Products from Pollution: Carbon Capture and Conversion
DESCRIPTION:Phasing out fossil fuels is a primary means to fight climate change\, but it alone is not enough. Even if all emissions ceased tomorrow\, atmospheric CO2 levels are already dangerously high and the climate would keep warming before it eventually stabilizes. We have to reduce or “capture” legacy CO2 to avert disaster. As the International Panel on Climate Change stated\, the *only* way we can meet our climate goal is to use carbon capture in our climate change fighting tool kit. \n\nMany of the products that we use every day are made with carbon. Treating legacy CO2 as a resource with economic value rather than a pollutant allows us to generate revenue while also fighting climate change. \n\nHowever\, not all uses or types of captured CO2 are equal in terms of environmental or economic benefits. This exhibit includes a video game that helps explain the pros and cons associated with different methods and applications of carbon capture. \n\nAdditionally\, it also provides examples of two types of carbon removal\, an interactive block activity\, and sample products made from captured CO2.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Welcome. Make Yourself At Home.\n \nA Gathering brings together the newest works of art to enter UMMA’s collection — many on display here for the first time. \n \nAs a free\, public museum\, UMMA staff takes care of art for the benefit of the community and society at large. The works on view in this exhibition\, all brought into the Museum between 2019 and the present\, shows how institutions like UMMA are becoming more permeable to societal challenges\, and more nimble in responding to them in service to all in their communities. In this exhibition you will find works that reflect on how global migrations\, race\, gender\, and ecological change shape the way we engage with the world and inform our visions for the future.\n \nThis collection of artistic engagements with issues give us tools to envision who we want to be as individuals\, as a museum\, and as a society\, connected to one another across space and experience.\n \nSo gather here to take in these latest works of art brought here for you. Gather here to be engulfed in their forms and meanings\, to discuss their takes\, to learn\, to disagree. Gather to relax\, make a friend\, drink a coffee\, finish the daily Wordle. Gather to feel full\, to be moved and inspired by all the possible imaginations of what is yet to come.\n \nCurated by Félix Zamora Gómez Irving Stenn\, Jr. Fellow in Public Humanities & Museum Pedagogy\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Andrea Carlson Future Cache
DESCRIPTION:In Andrea Carlson Future Cache\, a 40-foot-tall memorial wall towers over visitors\, commemorating the Cheboiganing (Burt Lake) Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians who were violently burned from their land in Northern Michigan on October 15\, 1900. Written across the walls above and around the memorial\, a statement proclaims Anishinaabe rights to the land we stand on: “You are on Anishinaabe Land.”  \n \nPresented alongside are paintings of imagined decolonized landscapes and a symbolic cache of provisions. Future Cache implicitly asks those who have benefited from the legacies of colonization to consider where they stand and where to go from here and seeks to foster a sense of belonging for displaced Indigenous peoples fighting for restitution.\n\nSpecial thanks to the Cheboiganing (Burt Lake) Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians\, Margaret Noodin\, and Richard A. Wiles\, for their consultation on the State Historical Marker text\; to Margaret Noodin and Michael Zimmerman\, Jr. for translating the gallery texts into Anishinaabemowin\; to James Horton and Fritz Swanson for generously producing the letterpress broadsides\; to colleagues at the U-M Biological Station\, U-M Museum of Anthropological Archaeology\, U-M Clements Library\, and U-M Clark Map Library. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Angkor Complex: Cultural Heritage and Post-Genocide Memory in Cambodia.
DESCRIPTION:Care in Uncertain Times\n \nAs crises of public health\, economic instability\, authoritarian regimes\, racial injustice\, and climate change spread around the globe\, millions are experiencing distress\, conflict\, uncertainty\, and vulnerability. This troubling combination of experiences is nothing new for Cambodians. Between 1975-1979\, when the Khmer Rouge ruled Cambodia\, about a quarter of the country’s populations died of infectious diseases\, weapon wounds\, and malnutrition.\n \nThis exhibition brings together more than 80 works of art spanning a millennium to present how the visual culture of Cambodia and its diaspora has evolved in the face of cultural upheaval. Showcasing works from worldwide collections\, including those from some of the foremost members of the Cambodian contemporary art scene\, Angkor Complex allows viewers to encounter the still-fresh scars of a genocide and critically appreciate the strategies evolved to nurture resilience in trying times.\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the U-M Office of the Provost\, U-M Office of the President\, National Endowment for the Arts\, Michigan Arts and Culture Council\, Eleanor Noyes Crumpacker Endowment Fund\, and U-M Ross School of Business.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Curriculum / Collection
DESCRIPTION:In Curriculum / Collection\, an incredible variety of University of Michigan courses take material form. Collected for each course are objects that address the nature of materiality\, time\, and human interaction in relation to our environments\, our wars\, our relationships\, and our eccentricities. \n \nWorking in collaboration with University faculty\, the works in this exhibition were selected for their capacity to provoke engagement with the guiding questions and themes of their specific courses\, while also offering students inspiration for research and art projects in their areas of study. The exhibition demonstrates some of the diverse and creative ways art plays a central role in learning across the disciplines. It also asks us to consider what we can learn from art objects across an infinite variety of specialties and subject matter.\n \nAs classes begin in Fall of 2021\, you’ll be able to use these pages to explore the collections designed for each course\, dive into the works themselves\, and hear from the professors and students about how they are engaging with art and objects in new ways. Who knows\, maybe you’ll learn something surprising along the way\, too.\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Erica Gervais Pappendick and Ted Pappendick\, and the Eleanor Noyes Crumpacker Endowment Fund\, and the Oakriver Foundation.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Certain absences are so stressed\, so ornate\, so planned\, they call attention to themselves\; arrest us with intentionality and purpose\, like neighborhoods that are defined by the population held away from them.” \n \n— Toni Morrison\n\nLead support for Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the U-M Arts Initiative\, and the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund.\n

SUMMARY:Other:Walking Her Path\, Participatory Sound Walk for XR/XF
DESCRIPTION:RSVP Here: https://bit.ly/3IWxM5m\n\nWalking Her Path is a public soundwalk experience. Participants will engage in the exploration of their sonic environment\, with a focus on listening from a perspectives shaped by the experiences of womanhood and gender dynamics. This activity involves walking\, listening and recording\, serving as an intentional exercise in auditory examination. During the soundwalk\, participants will be invited to actively listen to both the cacophony and the subtleties of everyday life through a feminist lens. They will be prompted to tune into sounds that may symbolize the experiences of womanhood\, empowerment\, or oppression. For example\, the sound of footsteps might symbolize independence and determination\, whereas the noise from construction sites or the abrupt blare of car horns might be seen as symbolic of societal interruptions or aggressive intrusions. Attendees will be equipped with handheld field recorders and encouraged to capture sounds that resonate with them personally. Moreover\, participants will be encouraged to provide narrations during the soundwalk\, articulating their reasons for selecting particular sounds and what those sounds represent to them.\n\nThis event is part of a greater series called\, \"XRXF: Extended Realities\, Extended Feminisms.\" Learn more here: https://xrxf.net/.

SUMMARY:Other:Read and Look | Cleo and Cornelius: A Tale of Two Cities and Two Kitties
DESCRIPTION:In this special program just for our younger visitors (ages 4–7)\, we’ll read a kid-friendly book and explore a related part of the Kelsey Museum’s galleries. This is a great way to discover the ancient world and connect our daily lives to families in the past. The program is a great first trip to the museum!\n\nThe book this month is *Cleo and Cornelius*. Adventurous Cleo and couch potato Cornelius live in ancient Egypt\, where cats are worshiped like gods and goddesses. After Cornelius accidentally boards a boat departing on a voyage across the sea\, the two felines find themselves in the faraway city of Rome\, a place where dogs are treated like kings. In Rome\, the activities never end! Cleo and Cornelius race chariots\, play games\, perform in a theater\, and more. Do they even want to return to Egypt? A spin on Aesop’s classic fable “The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse\,” *Cleo and Cornelius* is teeming with hungry hippos\, toga-clad dogs\, and dancing cat mummies\, bringing new excitement to a timeless tale.\n\nThis event is free and open to all visitors. If you have any questions or concerns regarding accessing this event\, please visit our accessibility page at https://myumi.ch/zwPkd or contact the education office by calling (734) 647-4167. We ask for advance notice as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Performance:Generation APA: ECLIPSED
DESCRIPTION:The annual GenAPA cultural show will be held on Saturday\, April 6th\, 2024 at the Power Center for the Performing Arts. With roughly 300 performers and 1\,300 audience members\, GenAPA stands as the largest student-run pan-Asian cultural programs in the Midwest. Promoting cultural diversity through tradition and history remains intrinsic to the core values of GenAPA. \n\nThis year’s theme is “Eclipsed” which conveys being obscured\, overshadowed\, or surpassed by something more prevalent\, akin to the moon covering the sun during a solar eclipse. \n\nThis year’s headliner\, Tiffany Day is a Chinese American singer-songwriter. Day fits well with our theme\, Eclipsed\, as she felt obscured in the environment that she grew up in and uses her platform today to show younger generations what is possible.\n\nIn addition to our headliner\, we have several student groups performing. Our student groups include Michigan Malaysian Student Association\, Vietnamese Student Association\, Filipino American Student Association\, Qingyun Chinese Ensemble\, rXn\, Michigan Masala\, KGayo3\, Pluot\, VeryUs\, Greenwood\, UM Taekwondo Demonstration Team\, Hawai`i Club\, and Seoul Juice.\n\nPre-order tickets here: https://forms.gle/21eT2LWnBgoGAceeA\nPre-ordered tickets can be picked up at Mason Hall Posting Wall from 4/1 - 4/5\nPre-ordered tickets CANNOT be picked up at the show.\nAll sales final\, no refunds will be granted.\n\nFor questions and concerns\, please email genapacore@umich.edu.

SUMMARY:Performance:Master of Fine Arts in Dance Concert: Sreya Muthukumar
DESCRIPTION:The U-M School of Music\, Theatre & Dance and the Department of Dance present *The Museum of Her*\, an original dance-theatre musical created by MFA candidate Sreya Muthukumar. Performances will be at 8:00pm April 5 and 6. Tickets are free\, available at the door an hour before the shows begin.\n\nMuthukumar's thesis work is an ambitious interdisciplinary project that fuses the vibrant physicality of Indian dance with Western music\, contemporary theater\, and elements of traditional dance-drama. Set against the backdrop of a museum\, this experience delves into the complexities of female identity in a postcolonial world\, challenging the impact of the male gaze on perceptions and expressions of ‘beauty’ and self-concept. Through movement and music\, *The Museum of Her* explores themes of conditioning\, perfection\, isolation and solidarity\, serving as a call for the reclamation of feminine bodies.\n\n*The Museum of Her* invites audiences to ponder the dichotomy of how women are seen versus how they see themselves. Inspired by traditional feminine aesthetics across cultures\, the production juxtaposes these scenes with the landscape of internal experience\, exploring the gap between perception and reality.\n\nAudiences will travel through distinct worlds\, featuring elements of Bharatanatyam\, Kathak\, Bollywood\, modern and jazz styles. Original music and a short film enhance the journey\, culminating in a powerful message of community and strength.\n\nFor press inquiries or further information\, please contact Sreya at sreyaa@umich.edu or on (734)-548-2454.

SUMMARY:Film Screening:Bad Axe
DESCRIPTION:Join fellow Michigan Alums\, their families\, and the Midwest Asian American Student Union to watch a documentary called ‘Bad Axe’\, led by fellow Asian-American Michigan alum David Siev (LSA Screen Arts & Cultures '15). \nThe movie is based on his close-knit Asian-American family living in rural Michigan during the 2020 pandemic as they fight to keep their local restaurant and American dream alive. With rising racial tensions\, the family must unite and use their voices as they reckon with backlash from a divided community\, white supremacists\, and intergenerational trauma from Cambodia’s Killing Fields. \nThe movie screening is part of the Spring 2024 Midwest Asian American Student Union conference which the University of Michigan is hosting\, and will be followed by a panel including David Siev and his family.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Angkor Complex Exhibition Tour – With Curators Nachiket Chanchani and Sonya Rhie Mace
DESCRIPTION:Click here to register: https://lp.constantcontactpages.com/ev/reg/kx77h3s.\n \nJoin Nachiket Chanchani\,  Curator of Angkor Complex and Associate Professor of the History of Art\, and Sonya Rhie Mace\, George P. Bickford Curator of Indian and Southeast Asian Art at the Cleveland Museum of Art\, on an engaging tour of the exhibition that will reflect on innovations and milestones in the history of the Mekong Basin. Chanchani and Mace will discuss material and visual culture\, as well as the prospects and perils of the repatriation of historical artifacts to Cambodia.  \n \nAs crises of public health\, economic instability\, authoritarian regimes\, racial injustice\, and climate change spread around the globe\, millions are experiencing distress\, conflict\, uncertainty\, and vulnerability. This troubling combination of experiences is nothing new for Cambodians. Between 1975-1979\, when the Khmer Rouge ruled Cambodia\, about a quarter of the country’s population died of infectious diseases\, weapon wounds\, and malnutrition. \n \nThe exhibition Angkor Complex: Cultural Heritage and Post-Genocide Memory in Cambodia brings together more than 80 works of art spanning a millennium to present how the visual culture of Cambodia and its diaspora has changed in the face of upheavals. Angkor Complex also allows viewers to encounter the still-fresh scars of a genocide and critically appreciate the strategies evolved to nurture resilience in trying times.\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the U-M Office of the Provost\, U-M Office of the President\, National Endowment for the Arts\, Michigan Arts and Culture Council\, the E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation\, Eleanor Noyes Crumpacker Endowment Fund\, U-M Ross School of Business\, U-M Department of History of Art\, Mark and Julie Phillips\, U-M Center for Southeast Asian Studies\, US Department of Education Title VI grant\, and an anonymous donor.

SUMMARY:Performance:Hot Club of Cowtown
DESCRIPTION:America’s premiere hot jazz and Western swing group\n\nThe Austin-based Hot Club of Cowtown explores the space where early jazz met Texas swing\, where Joe Venuti and Eddie Lang met Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys. Guitarist Whit Smith and fiddler Elana James have become a world-class country-jazz duo\, challenging each other and reading each other's minds at every turn. This is virtuoso small-group western swing that's beyond infectious. If you've seen the Hot Club before\, be advised that they're only getting better—they went on hiatus\, got back together\, and came out of it stronger. By now they're one of the great improvising bands in any genre. Robin Denselow of the London Guardian praises the Hot Club for “spirit\, originality\, and skill that would surely have impressed Stéphane Grappelli and Django Reinhardt back in the 1930s.” They don't always make it up here to Michigan\, but Elana has relatives in the area and brings her A game. Since the retirement and occasional return of bassist Jake Erwin\, the Hot Club has featured a variety of guest artists on the bass\, and each show has a slightly different flavor. Join us for the Western swing show of the year!\nPlease visit https://mutotix.umich.edu/4544/4545 for more detail.
