Delegating to an AI whose Alignment is Unknown (with Drew Fudenberg) DESCRIPTION:AI systems have the potential to improve decision-making\, but decision makers face the risk that the AI may be misaligned with their objectives\, which can lead them to restrict the information that the AI can use. We study the resulting \"covariate-design'' problem in the context of a treatment decision\, where a designer decides which patient attributes to reveal to an AI before receiving a prediction of the patient's need for treatment. Providing the AI with more information increases the benefits of an aligned AI but also amplifies the harm from a misaligned one. We characterize how the designer should select attributes to balance these competing forces\, depending on their beliefs about the AI's reliability. We show that the designer should optimally disclose attributes that identify rare segments of the population in which the need for treatment is high\, and pool the remaining patients. This talk describes recent progress in using the geometry of elliptic fibrations through the approach known as F-theory to better understand the physics of a broad class of nonperturbative string compactifications\, to identify ways in which the Standard Model of particle physics arises naturally in this context\, and to shed light on the structure of the largest known set of Calabi-Yau manifolds. In particular\, the talk will describe a recent complete analysis the full set of 470 million toric hypersurface Calabi-Yau threefolds\, of which over 99.99% have an elliptic or genus one fiber structure. This approach also helps understand the way in which all of these Calabi-Yaus are connected\, and provides strong evidence that the set of such manifolds is finite. This talk describes recent work with Shing Yan Li and with Fatima Abbasi and Richard Nally\, and upcoming work with Lara Anderson\, James Gray\, and Richard Nally. Laura then joined NYU\, first as a research assistant\, and then as a PhD student\, working with David Poeppel\, Alec Marantz and Liina Pylkkanen. There she used magnetoencephalography (MEG) to study the neural computations underlying dynamic speech understanding. Laura's dissertation `Towards a mechanistic account of speech comprehension' aims to combine insight from theoretical linguistics\, neuroscience and machine-learning\, and has received recognition from Meta\, the William Orr Dingwall Foundation\, the Martin Braine Fellowship\, the Society for Neuroscience\, and the Society for the Neurobiology of Language. As a post-doctoral scholar with Eddie Chang\, Laura added intracranial EEG and single-unit recordings to her repertoire of techniques. She used her time in the Chang Lab to understand how laminar single neuronal spiking encodes speech properties in humans. Now as the director of the Gwilliams Laboratory of Speech Neuroscience (the GLySN Lab) at Stanford University\, her group aims to understand the neural representations and computations that give rise to successful speech comprehension\, using a range of recording methodologies\, and analytical techniques.\n\nDr. Gwilliams will be joining us via Zoom.\n\nTitle: Computational architecture of human speech comprehension\n\nAbstract: \nHumans understand speech with such speed and accuracy\, it belies the complexity of transforming sound into meaning. The goal of my research is to develop a theoretically grounded\, biologically constrained and computationally explicit account of how the human brain achieves this feat. In my talk\, I will present a series of studies that examine neural responses at different spatial scales: From population ensembles using magnetoencephalography and electrocorticography\, to the encoding of speech properties in individual neurons across the cortical depth using Neuropixels probes in humans. The results provide insight into (i) what auditory and linguistic representations serve to bridge between sound and meaning\; (ii) what operations reconcile auditory input speed with neural processing time\; (iii) how information at different timescales is nested\, in time and in space\, to allow information exchange across hierarchical structures. My work showcases the utility of combining cognitive science\, machine-learning and neuroscience for developing neurally-constrained computational models of spoken language understanding. The goal of our research is to evaluate quantum dots in solution for radiation hardness\, specifically total ionizing dose (TID). Various compositions of commercially available quantum dots are examined\, and a high activity 137Cs source is used to induce ionization damage in quantum dot samples. Laser-induced photoluminescence spectroscopy\, and Xe bulb-induced fluorescence spectroscopy are used to measure quantum dot luminescence. We observe significant changes to the luminescence of irradiated quantum dots and find that changes are based on quantum dot composition. We performed TID up to 100 kR. We explore Graphene\, Perovskite\, and CdTe quantum dots in our study\, with fluorescence spectroscopy as the most reliable measurement technique. \n\nBio: \nEdward Cazalas\, Ph.D.\, Nuclear Engineering Program at University of Utah. Prof. Cazalas earned his Ph.D. from Penn State in Nuclear Engineering. He since worked at RAND Corporation and the U.S. Air Force Institute of Technology. His research is in the areas of radiation detection\, dosimetry\, and radiation effects on electronics and materials. For 3-manifolds with an involution\, there is a Heegaard Floer analogue of these invariants\, developed in joint work with C. Manolescu. However\, to develop the 4-dimensional aspects of the theory\, it is necessary to first show the real Heegaard Floer homology groups are natural. In the talk\, I will review the construction of our invariants\, and discuss a sketch of the proof of naturality\, highlighting the subtleties that arise in the equivariant setting. Approximately 60% of older adults who are living alone report experiencing social isolation and feelings of loneliness (NASEM\, 2020) due to a lack of social interaction. As quality and satisfaction of social relationships has been shown to be one of the best predictors of cognitive health\, well-being\, and overall life expectancy\, there is a need to develop innovative approaches to leverage and optimize the social networks for older adults living alone.\n\nSince the COVID-19 pandemic Virtual reality (VR) interventions are gaining traction among researchers as VR use has been shown to promote social connection and interaction and has been associated with benefits to mental health\, physical health and cognitive health (dual tasking\, visual attention\, and memory). Although historically\, VR technology has been relatively cumbersome\, expensive\, and marketed towards a niche and young audience\, recent innovations in the field have made VR considerably more accessible to individuals across demographics. These advances in VR technology have created more opportunity for more individuals to see potential benefit from its use\, however research to this point is in its infancy. \n\nThis talk will address considerations for VR adoption and engagement among older adults for the purpose of social interaction. We will also explore the effect that such emerging technologies as VR have on overall well-being for older adults and discuss implications for technology and intervention design.\n\nDr. Jess Francis-Levin (she\, her\, hers) is a gerontechnologist and mixed-methodologist. Her work examines how emerging technology use\, such as virtual reality\, may impact the overall health and well-being of the older adult community. With an emphasis on social connectivity\, Dr. Francis-Levin develops technological interventions designed to promote independence and mitigate the negative consequences of social isolation. A primary consideration for her research is how the digital divide may impact individuals from realizing the true benefits of emerging technologies\, and how to bridge that gap.\n\nAbout the series:\n\nHumans are social animals and from the earliest days of life\, are dependent on the quality of social relationships with significant others: family\, kin\, friends\, and a growing social network of online acquaintances. But\, how do we conduct research and come to understand the social processes transpiring in these significant social connections with others? What are the consequences for individual development and mental health outcomes of having close intimate relationships in one’s life? There is also a darker side to some relationships in the form of violence\, aggression\, and conflict. How do we study these processes? Social media and artificial intelligence have opened up new ways of thinking about “what is a social relationship?” and how many of these “friends” can one truly have.\n\nThe speakers for this series will focus on different types of social relationships\, spanning family and parent-child relationships\, friendships\, peer networks\, romantic relationships\, attachment relationships\, and the use of online media to maintain social connections. Shanna Merola and Halima Afi Cassells collaborated on collage and interactive installations for over five years. Over a century\, scholarly printers competed to produce carefully edited editions. As they produced more and more\, they developed methods\, such as page-layout and indices\, to make their books easy to read\, and they created dictionaries and reference books so a reader could get more from their books.\n\nThe Estienne family of printers are among the most renowned and long-lasting printing houses of the era. Family links and investment in scholarly training helped them to sustain a business in the print trade for six generations in France and Switzerland.\n\nThe Special Collections Research Center holds nearly 80 imprints dating from the first years of the sixteenth century into the reign of Louis XIV. This project comprises qualitative public health research conducted in impacted communities and visual arts generated from the research outcomes. Research teams of graduate and undergraduate students from the University of Michigan\, led by Professor William Lopez\, and the University of Iowa\, led by Professor Nicole Novak\, collaborated with a range of community members and organizers at sites of six large-scale immigration worksite raids that occurred in 2018 in Iowa\, Nebraska\, Ohio\, Tennessee\, and Texas. The researchers visited these sites\, spoke to advocates\, detainees\, their families\, and other community members. In conversation with the seventy-seven interviews\, artists Dalia Harris and Carolina Jones Ortiz generated ten images that comprise ICE in the Heartland.
