SUMMARY:Performance:UMS presents The Rose Sonata
DESCRIPTION:As part of the leadup to our 150th season in 28/29\, UMS is commissioning several new works across artistic disciplines. The first of these features a new\, full-length dance collaboration with New York City Ballet principal dancer Sara Mearns and co-choreographers and dancers Bobbi Jene Smith and Or Schraiber\, whose Obsidian was performed by Ballet BC last season.\n\nThis new piece\, titled The Rose Sonata\, was developed on the U-M campus in June 2026. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Comics Beyond Sight
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit covers a variety of creative approaches to comics visual accessibility\, and by extension visual accessibility broadly. Those approaches range from multimedia (audio and textual descriptions) through multidimensional and emerging technologies strategies (3D printing\, haptics\, and screen-based mobile touch interfaces). It demonstrates that comics can be made accessible. Learn about the international efforts of innovators in the realm of comics accessibility for those who are blind or have low vision\, assembled by the Accessible Comics Collective at San Francisco State University (SFSU) with the expertise of blind access professionals. \n\nEmily Beitiks was the accessibility lead for the content creation of the exhibit. She is the co-director for the San Francisco Disability Cultural Center (the first civically funded disability culture center on the planet!)\, and prior to that\, the director of the Longmore Institute on Disability. \n\nNick Sousanis (SFSU)\, the lead creative organizer of the exhibit\, is a Detroit native and was the first person to draw his dissertation in comics format\, subsequently published as the graphic novel Unflattening.\n\nView the exhibit anytime the Hatcher Library is open\, and join us for an opening presentation on Friday\, October 2nd\, 1:00pm - 4:00pm.

DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the centennial of the iconic 1926 “Down in Ann Arbor Town” map by exploring the colorful history\, campus traditions\, and detailed artistry that made it possible. Created by Jessie Horton Koessler (Class of 1901) to help fund the Michigan League building for women\, this celebrated map provides a fascinating view into 1920s campus life and the women who shaped it. Through three distinct exhibit sections\, journey from the campus history that led to the map’s creation to a broader look at early 20th-century pictorial mapmaking.\n\nWhile enjoying the exhibit\, pick up a scavenger hunt at the Clark Library desk that will inspire you to notice whimsical details in the maps discussed. Return your scavenger hunt at the desk for a small prize\, while supplies last.\n\nJoin the curators — Ava Pustulka (’28) and Anna Rohl\, map curator at Clark Library — for a presentation on September 24 (https://myumi.ch/X8y3r)\, where they will share the research that went into creating the exhibit.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Faster and More Fun: American Home Cooking in the 1920s
DESCRIPTION:Visit the Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room to see historical materials that illustrate women’s changing relationship with food\, cooking\, and technology during the heady decade of the 1920s\, sandwiched between WWI and the Great Depression. This exhibit features materials from the Janice Bluestein Longone Culinary Archive\, as well as select items from the Art\, Architecture\, and Engineering Special Collections and the Transportation History Collection.\n\nAs America rang in a new decade in the 1920s\, cookbook authors and appliance manufacturers stood ready to offer the newly emancipated and forward-thinking American woman a vision for her future\, a vision that would be scientifically grounded\, speedy enough to make time for leisure as well as housework\, and guaranteed to bring fun to that most humdrum of chores: planning and preparing meals for a family three times a day\, 365 days a year.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Fore-Site (Phase 3): The Stamps Gallery Pillar Project
DESCRIPTION:\n\nFrom September 2025 through December 2026\, Stamps Gallery is partnering in a curatorial collaboration with two Southeast Michigan-based\, artist-run project spaces led by Stamps alumni: C.Y.N.K. Studios\, directed by Sally Clegg (Lecturer III and Student Exhibition Coordinator\, MFA ’20) and Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20)\; and Sometimes Space\, directed by Nathan Byrne (Lecturer I\, MFA ’21). Each space hosts dozens of artists annually for exhibitions\, performances\, and events\, fostering experimental work and building community. For this project\, Byrne\, Clegg\, and Narula have been commissioned to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the gallery. In response\, they’ve curated six artists to create new work for the pillars over three cycles:\n\nPhase 1 (September 12 - December 12) artists: Amelia Burns (Cranbrook MFA ’23) and Erin McKenna (MFA ’20)\nPhase 2 (January 12 - August 12) artists: Sally Clegg (MFA ’20) and Kim Karlsrud (MFA ’20)\nPhase 3 (September 11 - December 11) artists: Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20) and Nathan Byrne (MFA ’21)\nPhase 3 \n\nCurated by Sometimes Space: Abhishek Narula (entry pillar)\nCurated by CYNK Studios: Nathan Byrne (courtyard pillar)\n\nArtist Statements/Bios\n\nAbhishek Narula\, Compressions \nCompressions is an installation comprised of 416 industrial-grade zip ties\, cinched around the entry pillar of the Stamps Gallery. The pillar measures roughly 110 inches in circumference\, requiring two ties per row to wrap around it\, resulting in 208 rows. The humble zip tie\, typically used to hang and bind other material\, is relegated to its functional properties rendering it unprepossessing and easily dismissed. The zip tie in this installation\, instead serves as an object of aesthetic possibility\, pulling it out of its usual background role to become the work itself. The resulting composition is a proposal to dwell\, to slow down\, and to simply see the pillar.\n\nAbhishek Narula is an artist\, designer\, and educator who works across sculpture\, installation\, sound\, and video. His practice takes the form of interventions\, working with what is already present. He reorients and disrupts objects and sites in order to open up formal possibilities and poetic experiences within the familiar. He is influenced by physical and digital infrastructural systems that sustain modern life and culture. His work treats this ambience itself as raw material for aesthetic inquiry\, exploring themes of labor\, precarity\, temporality and the sublime. Narula earned his MFA in Studio Art from the University of Michigan Stamps School of Art & Design and his MS/BS in Electrical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. His work has been exhibited at national and international venues such as the Ammerman Center for Arts and Technology\, Science Gallery Detroit\, Speculum Artium Media Festival in Slovenia\, New Media Caucus (NMC)\, WaveFarm\, The Boulder Public Library\, The Hyde Park Art Center\, Sector 2337 Art Gallery & Printing Press\, Tangible Embedded Interaction (TEI)\, International Symposium of Electronic Arts (ISEA)\, among others. He is a Robotics Systems Designer and Lecturer in the Robotics Department at the University of Michigan. Website / Instagram\n\nNathan Byrne\, Equally To Be Loved\nEqually To Be Loved is an image / object scaled to and installed upon the courtyard pillar of Stamps Gallery. The image is of a spontaneous sculpture made in 2017 during the first day of an artist residency at the Recology San Francisco A.I.R. Program. The sculpture was constructed in a storage container studio using 14 discrete objects that were in his studio upon entry. For Byrne\, this work embodies the energy and spirit of a studio at the start of a particularly fecund period of making. This work speaks to the artist’s interest in embodied experience of space\, archival and site responsiveness\, as well as his ongoing engagement with found materials. Byrne considers this project to be a far-flung sequel to his MFA thesis exhibition Equally Empty\, which was shown at Stamps Gallery in 2021. Equally To Be Loved is the second line of the Buddhist mantra from which both titles are derived.\n\nNathan Byrne is an artist / educator / curator currently based in Detroit\, MI. Through spatial and archive responsive projects\, he reimagines\, and explores within frameworks such as language\, the passage of time\, and contemplation. Intrigued by the potential of conveying phenomenal\, transformative\, and emotive states through materiality\, process\, and placement\, he negotiates the pliability of the viewer’s encounters with objects and environments. Byrne holds an MFA in Art from the University of Michigan Stamps School of Art & Design and a BA in Studio Art and Art History from San Francisco State University. He has been a Lecturer at Stamps School of Art & Design since the Fall of 2022. His work is exhibited widely nationally and he is a recipient of the VSC Fellowship at Vermont Studio Center. He has been awarded numerous artist residencies including Anderson Ranch Arts Center\, I-Park\, KHN Center for the Arts\, Prairie Ronde\, Recology San Francisco A.I.R. Program\, and Rockland Woods. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Reverie: The Student-led Exhibition Committee Fall 2026 Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:\n\n\nA reverie is a state between waking and dreaming\, a moment when the mind drifts beyond the immediate. It is a space where memory\, imagination\, desire\, and reality can overlap\, distort\, and take on new forms. In these moments\, the familiar can become strange\, and the ordinary can become something unexpected.\n\nReverie brings together student works that explore the space between what is known and what is felt. Across painting\, oil pastel\, ceramic\, digital art\, animation\, and mixed media\, the artists move through imagined landscapes\, intimate encounters\, memories\, figures\, and fragments of the everyday. These works blur the boundaries between observation and imagination\, allowing emotion and perception to reshape what we recognize.\n\nRather than depicting dreams literally\, Reverie considers dreaming as a way of seeing. The works reflect moments of escape\, introspection\, fantasy\, and transformation\, where the subconscious can surface and reality becomes open to interpretation. \n\nReverie was conceived and curated by members of the Student-led Exhibition Committee (SEC)\, and features work by eight SEC members at the Stamps School of Art & Design. The exhibition includes ten works across oil on canvas\, oil pastel\, ceramic\, digital art\, digital animation\, and mixed media.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Cosmo Whyte: Under the Quiet\, Beyond the Eye
DESCRIPTION:\n\nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra\n\nStamps Gallery kicks off the fall 2026 semester with an ambitious mid-career survey of interdisciplinary artist Cosmo Whyte. Born and raised in Jamaica\, Whyte completed a BFA from Bennington College and earned an MFA from the University of Michigan. He is currently a faculty member at the School of the Arts and Architecture\, UCLA.\n\nThis exhibition brings together two central concerns that animate Whyte’s artistic practice: the archive\, both personal and public\, as a site of disturbance\; and migration as a lived experience of refuge\, refusal\, and reinvention. In Whyte’s work\, the archive is never static or neutral. Rather\, it is a contested space where official histories encounter memory\, inheritance\, and the fragments of stories carried across generations. His practice moves within this charged interstitial terrain\, between what has been recorded and what has been remembered\, between institutional knowledge and embodied experience. Whyte invites the viewer to consider the fluidity of geographic borders and layered cultural identities that have persisted despite societal unrest caused by racial and socio-economic hierarchies across generations. In an era of intensified border politics and renewed debates over national identity\, Whyte’s work offers a timely meditation on memory\, movement\, and belonging.\n\nPresented with support from the U-M Institute for Humanities\, the U-M LSA Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies\, and the U-M Library.

Featuring two pianists and six dancers\, the new work receives its world premiere at the Power Center in October. Smith and Schraiber started their careers as dancers with the Batsheva Dance Company and now return as world-renowned creators whose choreography has been commissioned by The Paris Opera Ballet\, Royal Danish Ballet\, National Ballet of Canada\, and Martha Graham Dance Company\, to name just a few.\n\nTheir collaborative approach to dance theater results in a stunning new ensemble work that features New York City Ballet principal dancer Sara Mearns. Mearns began studying dance at age 13 in South Carolina and entered the School of American Ballet\, the official school of New York City Ballet\, in 2001. She has been a principal dancer with the company since 2008.\n\nPhotos © Lisa Spindler\, Instagram @lisaspindlerstudio

SUMMARY:Performance:Tallest Man on Earth with special guest Gwenifer Raymond
DESCRIPTION:“The Tallest Man on Earth has released some of the best modern folk music of this century. He writes elegant\, homespun ballads that draw you in toward the proverbial campfire.” –GQ\n\nCritics often draw comparisons between The Tallest Man on Earth and Bob Dylan\, citing similarities in both songwriting and vocal style. Matsson himself has acknowledged Dylan's influence\, revealing that he started listening to him at the age of fifteen. Fascinated by Dylan's covers\, he delved into their origins\, which gradually introduced him to early American folk artists like Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie. However\, Matsson is quick to distance himself from being part of any specific tradition\, stating\, “I don’t want to be part of a tradition. I just want to do what feels natural to me. This is how I play\, and this is how I write songs.”

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Down in Ann Arbor Town: Pictorial Maps\, Campus Traditions\, and the Women Who Made Them
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the centennial of the iconic 1926 “Down in Ann Arbor Town” map by exploring the colorful history\, campus traditions\, and detailed artistry that made it possible.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:FYRST Workshops 2026 - 2027
DESCRIPTION:If you are only seeing one workshop\, please SIGN-IN and refresh the Sessions page! If still having issues\, click this link. \nFirst-Year Relationship and Sexuality Talk (FYRST) is a required\, in-person\, and peer-facilitated workshop that came directly from feedback and listening sessions with current University of Michigan students. Our goal is to create an accessible\, supportive space for student-driven conversations where all identities and experiences are welcomed and in which students can build skills and tools around identifying goals and values and then communicate effectively about those. Workshops will be offered at multiple locations and times throughout the fall semester\, so please sign up for the workshop that works for you!! First-Year Relationship Sexuality Talk (FYRST) FAQ:\n“How many workshops do I have to sign up for?”\nYou only need to sign up for 1 workshop.
Attending 1 workshop will fulfill the requirement for the training. \n“I see that there is more than one session\, does it matter which one I sign up for?”\nIt generally does not matter which workshop you sign up for. There will be a few that are designated for specific groups such as transfer students or for students looking for accommodations. If you do not fit these groups please try to save these workshops for those that do and you are free to choose among any of the other workshops. \n“Is this workshop required?”\nThis workshop is required for all transfer and first-year students at the University of Michigan.\n“I’ve experienced harm around relationships or sexual experiences in the past and I am worried that attending this workshop may be harmful for me.” \nOur team is aware that students who are coming into the university that have experienced harm in the past. Our workshop is specifically designed to respect and validate the experiences of survivors and has been carefully constructed to avoid any specific descriptions of violence and focus instead on themes of empowerment\, communication\, and boundary setting. However\, if you still have concerns about programming and would like to request alternative programming\, please feel free to reach out at SAPAC-FYRST@umich.edu.\n“What if I struggle to learn in a presentation setting? I’m an active learner.”\nOur workshop is built to meet a variety of learning styles\, including time for self-reflection\, small group sharing\, and resources to take with you to work through on your own time! This workshop is meant to be interactive and inclusive. \n“Can I request accommodations?”\nWe considered accessibility in creating this workshop and selecting the locations in which the workshops are help. However\, we recognize many places at the University are inaccessible and we've set an * next to workshops that are on the first floor and lack stairs. These workshops also will have a presentation (other workshops we do not) and are a good fit for those who might need a large font. Please sign up for those if you feel that accommodations would assist you and reach out to SAPAC-FYRST@umich.edu if you are concerned or have questions. \n“I missed my workshop\, what should I do ?”\nOur team tracks attendance at each workshop by having participants swipe in with their MCard. If you are not able to attend the workshop you signed up for\, our team will continue to send reminder emails until you have completed a workshop. In this case\, please sign up for another workshop as soon as you can as the workshop is required and may fill up especially near the end of the semester. No need to contact SAPAC unless you are not able to reschedule. \n“I have had gender-based violence training before\, can I get this requirement waived?”\nAs this workshop was designed with University of Michigan student feedback in mind\, our workshop is unique to the UM community. Our curriculum focuses on individualized reflection and because of its interactive nature\, each workshop will be unique to the people attending. Although we are excited you already have familiarity with the subject\, this workshop is required for every first year and transfer student. \n“I’m a commuter/non-traditional student\, do I still have to attend?\"\nYes\, this workshop is required for every first-year and transfer student - not only do we want every student to benefit from having this time to connect with peers\, but we also want to make sure your peers benefit from what you bring to our community. If you have any concerns or questions about being able to participate\, please contact SAPAC-FYRST@umich.edu.\n“I still have questions! Who should I contact?\"\nPlease contact us at SAPAC-FYRST@umich.edu.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Camille Ann Brewer\, MFA\, MLIS
DESCRIPTION:Camille Ann Brewer lives and works in the City of Detroit\, Michigan. Through the process of textile construction\, Brewer’s artwork intersects cartographic and photographic images that speak to specific spaces and time. Weaving together of physical place\, memory with time is the core subject of this body of work. \n\nThe artwork is built with time-period paper maps\, which illustrate spatial geography and political territory\; along with paper-collaged images of people\, places and things\, which tie directly to the history and human relationships in space. In patterns that support the artwork’s theme\, the two disparate paper elements are then woven together to create a serendipitous making and aesthetic experience.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:CCPS Photo Exhibition. This is the Place
DESCRIPTION:There are nearly one million refugees currently living in Poland. While the vast majority arrived from Ukraine\, Poland has also welcomed forcibly displaced people from Central Asia\, Latin America\, Africa\, and the Middle East. While refugees may be different\, they all search for a place that reminds them of home.\nIn *This Is The Place*\, a project supported by the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR)\, Anna Liminowicz asked refugees to show what\, in Poland\, reminds them of their home. These portraits and the personalized confessions her subjects handwrote in their native languages tell poignant stories about safety and hope.\nAnna Liminowicz is an award-winning photographer and reportage journalist based in Warsaw\, Poland. A frequent contributor to the *The New York Times*\, *The Guardian*\, *The Wall Street Journal*\, *The Washington Post*\, *El Pais*\, *Der Spiegel* and UNHCR\, Liminowicz divides her time between assignments and long-term personal projects\, mainly focusing on social issues like identity and loss\, and what uplifts her subjects. She has covered the war in Ukraine and Ukrainian refugees in Poland since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion\, and received the 2022 Grand Press Photo Award for her project “Too Precious to Leave Behind”.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Lila Kadaj Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Lila Kadaj received her MFA from Wayne State University. Her work has been shown at numerous institutions\, including the Detroit Institute of Arts\, the Cranbrook Art Museum\, and the Arab American National Museum. She spent nearly 27 years teaching art at Detroit Public schools.\n\nArtist statement: “When looking at a beautiful flower. It’s just itself. Just there......no .....it does not proclaim its purpose for blooming is to make people happy. It just is. Like standing in front of an easel and painting........just is.......no matter......what proclamations may be concluded to sway the viewer. Same thing goes for fine art. It’s not about I am a woman....it’s not about I am a first generation Arab American.....it’s not about being a child of trauma....it’s not about a member of my family being gunned down on the street....it’s about being born a painter.....standing in front of my easel and working to create a \"Piece of Fine Art\". Not standing on some soap box and expecting my words to somehow qualify my painting. It’s the painting\, drawing or sculpture that must speak on its own.......on how the artist......via the intellect and muse uses the elements to create something distinct and first rate. It can be quiet or loud. I see so much very weak work uplifted not for its quality but because it’s in fashion.”

SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. The Art of Memory\, Paintings by Felix Lembersky
DESCRIPTION:Felix Lembersky (1913-1970) was a painter\, theater stage designer\, teacher\, and leader of artistic groups. He began his career within the Soviet Avant-Garde in Ukraine before studying realist painting in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). Throughout his life he worked across realist and modernist styles that fell outside of Soviet-mandated Socialist Realism. His Execution: Babyn Yar series (ca. 1944-52) is the earliest known artistic representation of Babyn Yar\, a Holocaust massacre site in Kyiv. For political reasons\, these paintings\, along with his later nonconformist work\, were barred from exhibition in the Soviet Union.\n\nHaving witnessed two world wars\, the 1917 revolution\, and political terror\, Lembersky reflected on these experiences with candor while imbuing his work with hope and optimism. He was drawn to vulnerable\, neglected\, and marginalized people: children\, the elderly\, ethnic minorities\, and industrial workers subjected to harsh labor and dangerous conditions. Regardless of their circumstances\, Lembersky portrayed his subjects with empathy\, dignity\, and admiration. \n\n“For my father\, honesty and integrity meant more than anything else. Art was an expression of freedom\, individuality\, and personalized creativity\, without which it ceased to be art.”\n— Galina Lembersky\, daughter\n\nExhibit curated by Yelena Lembersky\, granddaughter of Felix Lembersky\, and Geneviève Zubrzycki\, WCEE Director.\n\nWorks on loan from the private collection of Yelena Lembersky.\n\nContact weisercenter@umich.edu to schedule a viewing.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at weisercenter@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Black Birth Joy
DESCRIPTION:Black Birth Joy by Tiana Lashae documents birth as a deeply personal story of connection\, courage\, tenderness\, and joy. The photographs and stories in the exhibit challenge mainstream narratives that reduce Black birth to statistics and only amplify Black pregnant women's anxiety and hesitancy about navigating the maternal health care system. Instead\, the exhibit offers evidence of joy\, reminders of possibility\, and a visual legacy for generations to come. \n \nBlack Birth Joy was born from Lashae's belief that more positive birth stories of BIPOC families need to be seen and heard\, and her photographs invite viewers to witness the people behind them: the mothers\, babies\, partners\, families\, and birthworkers. They create space for BIPOC families to see themselves represented with dignity and to witness the full range of birth experiences. Lashae's photographs also create a tangible record that can support conversations around quality of medical care\, respectful treatment\, and patient rights. The exhibit empowers women to prioritize and advocate for their birth experiences while also encouraging perinatal health professionals and birthworkers to center the humanity\, dignity\, and individual experiences of patients and families. \n\nThe exhibit comprises over 30 photographs as well as stories of mothers whose births were documented by Lashae\, a doula and birth/newborn photographer whose work has been published in Everyday Birth Magazine\, an international publication. The physical exhibit is accompanied by a virtual component that encourages audiences to engage with each mother's birth story.\n\nThe Lane Hall Exhibit Space is sponsored by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender (IRWG) and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies (WGS) at the University of Michigan. \n\nBlack Birth Joy\nThursday\, October 1\, 2026 – Friday\, January 15\, 2027\nLane Hall Exhibit Space\, 204 S State St.\, Ann Arbor\, MI\nOpen M–F\, 9AM–5PM

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Grand Vision
DESCRIPTION:Visiting artist Olayami Dabls is a storyteller\, curator\, educator\, and mentor. He is the founder of the MBAD African Bead Museum in Detroit. Through material culture\, Dabls presents commentary on the past\, present\, and future from African and African-American perspectives\, with the understanding that generations of African ancestors used visual materials to convey information about their identity as well as send messages for healing and protection. Dabls is a luminary\; for decades he has re-imagined what a museum space can be\, accessible to everyone\, free from the underpinnings of colonialism and the Western\, often white\, frame. *Grand Vision* includes a conceptual installation in the Gallery\, presenting Dabls’s own work in visual conversation with African beads and artifacts from Dabls’s Bead Museum collections. \n\nAdditionally\, Dabls’s iconic outdoor sculpture *Iron Teaching Rocks Table Manners* will be installed on the U-M campus grounds near UMMA\, at the intersection of State Street and South University from September 17- October 11\, 2026. The project’s range intends to more fully articulate the many facets of Dabls’ creative practice\, and the overlay of art\, history\, identity\, community\, and healing.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:“Who Counts? A History of Voting in America”
DESCRIPTION:Changes over the course of the nineteenth century in how Americans voted\, from voice vote to public ballot box to private voting booth\, also saw changes in the material culture that surrounded voting. Ballots and ballot boxes\, campaign pins and ribbons\, blank lists and pre-printed party tickets\, lanterns and banners–the creative forces of the American print industry filled the country’s cities and small towns with the ephemera of electioneering.\n\nAs you look at the items in this exhibit\, think about what they tell us about how Americans in the past felt about voting\, and about how voting felt. How did Election Days feel when they were full of parades and music and public drinking? What was it like to vote when everyone around you knew who you voted for? And\, most of all\, who counted as a voter\, and who did the counting?\n\nOn view September 11-December 22\, weekdays from 12-4 pm.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:RCGD Fall Seminar Series: Global Perspectives on Culture and Health (Lindsay Kobayashi)
DESCRIPTION:RCGD Fall 2026 Seminar Series: Global Perspectives on Culture & Health\, meets Mondays 3:30 to 5 at ISR Thompson 6050.\n\nGlobal Perspectives on Culture and Health explores fundamental aspects of human life. Culture facilitates human interaction by providing meaning to lived experience. Accounting for culture in both theories and methods potentially advances the study of health by connecting the macro and micro levels of human experience. Yet\, culture should be understood as dynamic and complex. It fundamentally shapes individuals and simultaneously is shaped by individuals. The importance of systematically attending to culture includes topics of values\, language\, immigration\, and society.\n\nTheories and methods that incorporate culture hold great potential for advancing the understanding of health outcomes and health trajectories in various global contexts.\n\nThe speakers for this series will focus on various aspects of culture and diverse groups living in the U.S. and across the globe to address the ways in which attending to culture helps clarify and overcome challenges to good health.\n\nThe Group Dynamics Seminar series is considered one of the longest running seminar series in the social sciences. It has been running uninterruptedly since it was founded by Kurt Lewin in the 1920’s in Berlin. The seminar series runs every semester on a theme chosen by faculty organizer/s who are affiliated with the Research Center for Group Dynamics at the Institute for Social Research. A very important feature of this seminar today is its interdisciplinary nature. Recent themes have included political polarization\, evolution and human behavior\, and cultural psychology.\n\nIn person: ISR Thompson 6050\, unless otherwise specified.\nOrganized by Kristine Ajrouch and Sela Panapasa\nEvents are not recorded

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:2026 David Noel Freedman Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the 2026 David Noel Freedman Lecture with Dr. Susanne Paulus\, Associate Professor of Assyriology and Curator of the Tablet Collection at the Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures (ISAC) at the University of Chicago.\n\nMichigan League\, Vandenberg Room\, 2nd Floor\nMonday\, October 26th\, 4 - 6pm\n\nAbstract:\n\nWriting history is telling stories. The stories we tell about ancient economies\, including that of Late Bronze Age Babylonia\, are often shaped by preconceptions about commodities\, credit\, and debt. Drawing on tablets excavated in cities such as Babylon\, Nippur\, and Ur in modern Iraq\, this lecture follows barley through a series of transactions involving taxes\, loans\, investments\, and even two piglets. Barley was both a major food source and an economic staple\, but the documents reveal much more than subsistence. They offer alternative ways of understanding credit\, debt\, and investment in Late Bronze Age Babylonia.\n \nBiography:\n\nSusanne Paulus is an Associate Professor of Assyriology and Curator of the Tablet Collection at the Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures (ISAC) at the University of Chicago. Her research focuses on the social\, legal\, and economic history of Late Bronze Age Babylonia. Her current book project\, Banking with Barley\, supported by the American Council of Learned Societies\, explores credit\, debt\, and economic life in Kassite Babylonia. She is also an epigraphist for the Nippur excavations and is involved in the publication of cuneiform texts from the city of Babylon.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Long time asymptotics of the generalized soliton gas for the mKdV equation
DESCRIPTION:We analyze a new class of solutions of the modified KdV equation introduced by Dyachenko\, Zakharov\, and Zakharov\, and which can be interpreted as a soliton gas. These solutions are characterized by a Riemann-Hilbert problem which arises as the limit $N\to \infty$ of a sequence of $2N$-soliton RH problems\, where the solitons display two different triangularity in the jumps. The limiting RH problem belongs to a novel class of problems\, where the jump matrices do not have any zero entry (as opposed to the classical upper/lower triangular setting).\n We show that the initial profile of such a gas solution is approaching a cnoidal wave solution for $x\to \pm \infty$ with different phase shifts\, and we establish an asymptotic description of the gas of solitons for large times that is valid over the entire spatial domain\, in terms of Jacobi elliptic functions\, with slowly modulated phase shifts as time varies from $-\infty$ to $+\infty$.\nThis is a joint work with Ken McLaughlin (Tulane U.) and Robert Jenkins (UCF).\n\n*To request access to the Zoom room\, please contact Nathan Hayford at nhayford [ at ] umich.edu.*

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Toxic Landscapes: Industrial Chemistry and the Politics of Risk in the Modern World
DESCRIPTION:Industrial capitalism engendered human and animal bodies toxic in myriad and uneven ways. This talk examines the entanglements of public health and the body through the history of carbolic acid. Derived from coal tar production in British industrial factories in the early 19th century\, carbolic acid exploded in use from the 1870s after Joseph Lister’s pioneering use of the chemical in antiseptic surgery. Heralded as the first public health and surgical 'magic bullet'\, chemists and coroners clamored to legislate carbolic acid as a dangerous poison- by 1900 carbolic acid poisonings and suicides were significant causes of death around the Atlantic World. By the early 20th century\, carbolic acid became a common household tool in the fight against germs and in the beauty industry. Looming was the nature of risk. I show how exposure to carbolic acid skin damage and death differentially impacted women and laborers\, particularly in the Global South. Carbolic acid's use in the plastics industry\, and as an insecticide led to a surge in production in the 20th century\, including widespread water and soil pollution. This talk thus explores questions about risk and regulation\, the unequal burdens of toxicity\, and the longue durée invisible health impacts of chemicals.\n\nJacob Steere-Williams\, PhD\, is professor of history and medical humanities at the College of Charleston\, and Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. He serves as Associate Editor of the Journal of the History of Medicine and Allied Sciences\, and Editor of the Epidemic Histories book series with Johns Hopkins University Press. His work explores the history of public health\, epidemic disease\, and the environment\, interrogating questions about disease surveillance\, governance\, and everyday scientific practice in Britain\, across the Atlantic World\, and the former British colonies. In addition to dozens of articles and op-eds\, he is the author of the 2020 book The Filth Disease and the 2023 Port Cities of the Atlantic World.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Women in Supply Chain Studies
DESCRIPTION:Supply chains are the backbone of the global economy. While the fragility\, geography\, and organization of global production networks are at the forefront of supply chain discourse\, the people who make and study consumers’ products are often forgotten. Women especially play a critical role in the production of goods and services and global procurement. \nThe Women in Supply Chains (WiSC) Rackham Interdisciplinary Workshop (RIW) was created to understand these issues and create a space for graduate students interested in the intersection between gender and supply chains. WiSC researches gender disparities in supply chain scholarship and practice to advance awareness and pursue more equitable outcomes. We seek to bring together an interdisciplinary group to collaborate on topics related to our three research pillars: 1) supply chain discourse and governance\, 2) supply chain gender inequities\, and 3) barriers to equitable supply chain research and practice. Our interdisciplinary approach addresses the intersections of gender\, power asymmetries\, and economic exploitation in global production networks. Recent industry research shows that progress on gender representation in supply chains has stalled\, demonstrating a need for sustained academic engagement (2024 Women in Supply Chain Survey Report | Gartner). \nResearch questions we plan to explore include:To what extent do supply chain theory and discourse rely on or reinforce patriarchal values? What gender-based inequities and power asymmetries exist in global production networks? How can supply chain stakeholders mitigate these inequitiesWhat barriers do gender-marginalized individuals face as supply chain scholars or practitioners? How can we build community for people who work in supply chains? We plan to hold monthly events (approximately 1 hour) on a consistent day of the week (based on the availability of participants/guest speakers). We also plan to attend and promote events on campus (e.g.\, speakers\, lectures) as they relate to gender and supply chains. Planned events include hands-on activities and treks\, including a book club and a manufacturing site tour. Graduate students from all disciplines and gender identities are invited to attend.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:The Devil is in the Tail: Macroeconomic Tail Risk Expectations of Firms
DESCRIPTION:This paper examines novel survey evidence on firms’ beliefs about macroeconomic tail risk and their role in investment decisions. In a large survey of firms\, I elicit the subjective probability of a severe macroeconomic downturn and firms’ exposure to such events. Using observational and experimental variation\, I find that a higher probability of a severe macroeconomic downturn substantially lowers investment\, particularly for more exposed firms\, beyond what can be explained by changes in firms’ subjective first and second moments. In a heterogeneous firm model calibrated to the survey evidence\, tail risk concerns make fiscal policy particularly effective for stabilizing investment.
