SUMMARY:Performance:Doolin'
DESCRIPTION:After three years of breakout touring at some of the biggest roots festivals in the United States and Canada\, and another three years locked out of the live performance world they have so ambitiously cultivated\, Doolin’\, France’s premiere practitioners of Irish and Celtic music\, return in early 2023 with a new album entitled CIRCUS BOY. \n\nRecorded in part in the US (Chicago\, Kansas City and Pittsburgh) during their 2019 tour\, the album was completed at the legendary Studio Ferber in Paris\, France\, under the direction of two legendary producers\, Olivier Lude and Patrice Renson\, both of whom have collaborated with some of the biggest names in French music. While their 2016 album drew its inspiration from the fusion of traditional Irish music\, French chanson\, and American roots music\, CIRCUS BOY is resolutely more adventurous\, as evidenced by their original compositions as well as by the added punch and sonic elements that were brought to the project by producers Lude and Renson. \n\nWilfried Besse’s vocals are supported as usual by the driving rhythm section of Josselin Fournel (percussion)\, Sébastien Saunié (bass) and Nicolas Besse (guitars)\, and the trad-Irish influence remains evidenced through the whistles of Jacob Fournel\, the bodhran of his brother\, Josselin\, and the nimble accordion playing of Nicolas’ brother\, Wilfried. But CIRCUS BOY represents a more powerful and bigger musical vision for the band\, made possible by the introduction of piano\, drums\, and brass as new sonic elements. That said\, the Irish music tradition is not complete without the presence of a fiddle or two\, and on CIRCUS BOY Doolin’ includes three of the best European fiddlers of the genre: Niahm Gallagher\, Niall Murphy\, and Guilhem Cavaillé\, himself a founding member of the band.\n \nhttps://www.doolin.fr/

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit \"Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World: Interracial Identity in the U.S. and Around the World — What Research and Mixed Race People Tell Us\" is an exploration into the library's collections about the diversity of mixed race heritage. Through research\, narratives\, demographic data\, and a variety of visual and published materials\, explore multifaceted aspects of mixed race heritage with insights from many perspectives.\n\nThe 2020 U.S. Census illuminated a 276 percent increase in individuals who identify as \"two or more races\" since 2010. In recognition of the growing numbers of mixed race-identifying people at the University of Michigan\, throughout the country\, and across the globe\, we're excited to unveil this new exhibit — a unique exploration of changing demographics and intersectional identities.\n\n[The Hatcher Library will be closed December 21 to January 1.]

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Welcome. Make Yourself At Home.\n \nA Gathering brings together the newest works of art to enter UMMA’s collection — many on display here for the first time. \n \nAs a free\, public museum\, UMMA staff takes care of art for the benefit of the community and society at large. The works on view in this exhibition\, all brought into the Museum between 2019 and the present\, shows how institutions like UMMA are becoming more permeable to societal challenges\, and more nimble in responding to them in service to all in their communities. In this exhibition you will find works that reflect on how global migrations\, race\, gender\, and ecological change shape the way we engage with the world and inform our visions for the future.\n \nThis collection of artistic engagements with issues give us tools to envision who we want to be as individuals\, as a museum\, and as a society\, connected to one another across space and experience.\n \nSo gather here to take in these latest works of art brought here for you. Gather here to be engulfed in their forms and meanings\, to discuss their takes\, to learn\, to disagree. Gather to relax\, make a friend\, drink a coffee\, finish the daily Wordle. Gather to feel full\, to be moved and inspired by all the possible imaginations of what is yet to come.\n \nCurated by Félix Zamora Gómez Irving Stenn\, Jr. Fellow in Public Humanities & Museum Pedagogy\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Nicole Ray Art Exhibit: State of Play
DESCRIPTION:Dates: Saturday June 8 - Sunday August 25\n\nReception: Saturday June 8\, 2pm-4pm MBG West Lobby\n\nWhat is play? Who’s to say? The animals of these fields and woods\, streams and ponds surely know. They take time each day to adventure and roam\, scamper and scout. The plants and trees excitedly join in. Some bend and sway and some glisten in rain. Perhaps each invites their friends from away to come and show them new ways of play. Let’s have a look and spend the day imagining what happens when we look away. An exploration of encounters real and imagined by local artist\, Nicole Ray. \n\nBio\n\nNicole Ray is an artist and illustrator living in Brighton\, Michigan. She grew up in a small beach town in New York with her toes deep in the sand and her head buried in books. Nicole creates a whimsical line of art prints and paper goods under the name Sloe Gin Fizz.\n\nFrom quirky animal and vegetable characters to nostalgia-filled interiors and calming views of nature\, Nicole’s hand-drawn scenes are highly accessible\, infused with a playful sense of humor and a strong narrative quality. \n\nNicole holds a BFA in Illustration from the School of Visual Arts\, as well as a BA in History from Trinity College in Hartford\, CT. Nicole and her mister live in a log house on a lake just north of Ann Arbor with a spoiled border collie named Stella and an ever-expanding network of critter friends.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Certain absences are so stressed\, so ornate\, so planned\, they call attention to themselves\; arrest us with intentionality and purpose\, like neighborhoods that are defined by the population held away from them.” \n \n— Toni Morrison\n\nLead support for Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the U-M Arts Initiative\, and the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Michelle Hinojosa: Logcabins
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery commissioned Michelle Hinojosa (MFA\, 2023) to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the Gallery. Hinojosa has created log cabin quilts to adorn the columns in front of Stamps Gallery. The log cabin quilts traditionally represent the warm hearth at the center of a home. This installation reflects on the interplay between home\, placemaking\, labor\, and intergenerational memories of migration. Rather than quilting cotton designed to softly embrace the body\, these quilts are sewn from outdoor grade\, UV-resistant polyester. The quilt is an ode to Hinojosa’s grandmother who illegally crossed the US/Mexico border holding her babies and her quilts. As she and her family drove across the United States to work in the fields of the Salinas Valley\, the quilts offered a safe space for her and her family. Hinojosa celebrates their resilience to her grandmother and elders while also drawing attention to precarity and violence experienced by refugees and migrants crossing the US-Mexico border in our present today.\nArtist’s bio:\nMichelle Inez Hinojosa is an artist\, educator\, and researcher whose work is informed by Indigenous and Latine/x/a/o studies. Born and raised in Texas\, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in both drawing and painting and art education with a minor in art history at the University of North Texas. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. She works with quilting\, bead weaving\, embroidery\, jewelry\, transparent film installations\, painting\, ceramics\, and sculpture to honor and explore the history of migration in her family and humanize the current discourse around migration still occurring at the southern border. Alongside her artwork she maintains a writing practice to re-story\, re-make\, and re-claim the often subordinated narratives of Latinx\, Chicanx\, Mexican\, and Texican peoples. \n\nRecently\, Hinojosa was named an inaugural Creative Careers Artist in Residence at the University of Michigan\, she has also attended residencies at Mildred's Lane (Pennsylvania)\, Anderson Ranch Art Center (Aspen\, CO) and The Cedars Union (Dallas\, TX).

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:An equator theorem for the 2-sphere
DESCRIPTION:We will focus on the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms (and/or area-preserving homeomorphisms) of the 2-sphere. A tremendous amount of progress has been made in the study of these groups in the last few years\, but many problems remain\, including the Equator Conjecture. An equator on the 2-sphere is a simple closed curve whose complementary components have equal area. The Equator Conjecture predicts that for any positive K\, there are pairs of equators such that any Hamiltonian diffeomorphism sending one equator to the other must have Hofer norm larger than K. We will prove an alternative conjecture\, where we replace “Hofer norm” with “quantitative fragmentation norm”. To prove this\, we construct new quasimorphisms defined on the group of area-preserving homeomorphisms of the 2-sphere\, coming from methods inspired from mapping class groups and geometric group theory. Joint work with Yongsheng Jia.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:PC CARES- Learning Circles
DESCRIPTION:Members of the PC CARES team\, Dr. Lisa Wexler and Tara Schimdt\, will be providing (2) in person Learning Circles and (2) Virtual Learning Circles to our University of Michigan Community starting August 23\, 2024 and finishing the last Learning Circle during the Fall semester. PC CARES learning circles are meaningful conversations that empower our community to develop realistic\, feasible\, and locally-led solutions to reduce the stigma surrounding suicide and mental health. These circles provide an opportunity to envision actionable\, sustainable\, and research-informed strategies for suicide prevention. The program consists of four sessions\, each lasting 2-3 hours\, where participants explore concise pieces of research and engage in discussions across multiple sectors about what the research reveals and how these insights can be applied within our community. The core of PC CARES lies in its name—Promoting Community Conversations. This is not a traditional lecture model where an expert talks to an audience. Instead\, we believe that communities hold the key to addressing the complex issue of youth suicide through grassroots\, sustainable solutions that foster a shift from hopelessness to empowerment. For those interested\, we will be offering  a total of 8.5 Social Work CEU's through NASW and  8.5 \"Related\" CEU's through the Michigan Certification Board of Addiction Professionals (MCBAP) for the completion of all four Learning Circles.

SUMMARY:Performance:The Claudettes
DESCRIPTION:Grounded in roots music yet pushing the boundaries of indie pop and rock\, the Claudettes are writing the most riveting chapter of their story right now. Pianist/songwriter Johnny Iguana formed the Claudettes with drummer Michael Caskey\, dazzling with the barrelhouse bravura of their 2013 debut Infernal Piano Plot…HATCHED! Another Yellow Dog Records release followed in 2015 featuring Nigerian-American singer Yana: No Hotel. Vocalist Berit Ulseth and bassist/vocalist Zach Verdoorn joined the band for Pull Closer to Me: Live in the Piano Room (2017) and Dance Scandal at the Gymnasium (2018\, helmed by Grammy-winning Black Keys producer Mark Neill).\n\nA new Claudettes era began when the band moved to Forty Below Records and released the acclaimed 2020 album High Times in the Dark and 2022’s The Claudettes Go Out! Now\, the Claudettes introduce Rachel Williams\, a six-foot Texan with a mohawk\, a big voice and powerful stage presence. \n\nOutside the Claudettes\, Johnny Iguana has earned a Blues Music Award nomination and Living Blues Award nomination for piano player of the year. Johnny co-founded indie-rock cult favorites Oh My God\, toured as pianist for blues stars Junior Wells and Otis Rush\, played piano on three Grammy-nominated albums and played on albums featuring Buddy Guy\, Junior Wells\, James Cotton\, Derek Trucks\, Gary Clark Jr.\, Shemekia Copeland\, Keb’ Mo’\, Mick Jagger\, Keith Richards and more.

SUMMARY:Performance:The Go Rounds
DESCRIPTION:“stretching sonic boundaries with joyful beauty” –Local Spins\n\nThe Go Rounds are one of contemporary indie rock’s most creative groups\, a bold and visionary collection of talented musicians that have forged a reputation as innovators over the course of five studio albums and countless live performances.\nHailing from Kalamazoo\, Michigan\, they’ve firmly established themselves in the Great Lakes music community\, becoming staples of the local festival circuit while taking their electric live show from coast to coast\, from SXSW to Chicago’s Green Music Fest.\n\nDescribed as a blend of psychedelia\, Americana\, twang-rock and jelly-roll with a healthy dose of pop sensibility holding things together\, The Go Rounds write music that sounds like bits and pieces of all your favorite bands exploded into rock ‘n roll confetti. Fingerpicked guitar\, fuzzy distorted tones\, introspective ambience\, spellbinding vocals and effervescent synth-pop: they manage to effortlessly weave together a varied sonic palette through intricate arrangements that are at once accessible\, engaging\, surprising and evocative. Their latest release\, ‘Whatever You May Be’\, was described as a “multi-faceted\, ambient art-rock epic” by critics\, while lead vocalist Graham Parsons painted the record as an “examination of our mirrors – the places\, times and relationships that hold our reflection… a fever dream\, a clearing on the horizon.”\n\nhttps://www.thegorounds.com/\n\nPlease visit https://mutotix.umich.edu/5045/5046 for more detail.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Guardians: Spirits of Protection
DESCRIPTION:This fall\, the Residential College Art Gallery proudly presents Guardians: Spirits of Protection\, an exhibition of evocative figurative sculptures by renowned artist Ann Savageau. The exhibition will be on display from August 26 to November 2\, 2024.\n\nWe invite the university community and the general public to explore this moving collection that delves into themes of loss\, grief\, healing\, and protection. The seventeen life-size figures\, crafted from found objects and beach flotsam\, are a poignant response to the tragedies in Savageau’s life\, including the loss of her three children. Through this deeply personal and powerful work\, Savageau reimagines discarded materials as symbols of new life and resilience\, reflecting the healing power of art.\n\nAnn Savageau will be in residence in Ann Arbor and the Residential College from September 16-20 and October 20-25\, 2024. During her stay\, you are warmly invited to join us for a special artist reception on October 23\, from 4:30 to 6:00 pm in the Gallery. Prior to the reception\, there will be an artist's talk in the Keene Theater at 3:30 pm\, where Savageau will share insights into her creative process and the inspiration behind Guardians.\n\nAnn Savageau\, a former Studio Art instructor at the Residential College from 1978 to 2002\, is not only an artist but also an activist and educator. Her contributions to the Prison Creative Arts Project\, where she taught a weekly art workshop at Jackson Prison for four years\, showcase her commitment to using art as a tool for social change.\n\nDon't miss this opportunity to witness the transformative impact of Savageau's work and engage with her during her residency. We look forward to seeing you at the RC Art Gallery.\n\nImportant Dates:\n\nExhibition: August 26 – November 2\, 2024\nArtist's Talk: October 23\, 2024\, at 3:30 pm\, RC Keene Theater\nArtist Reception: October 23\, 2024\, from 4:30 – 6:00 pm\, RC Art Gallery
