They know their message is powerful\, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\n \nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz\, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna)\, \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters\, photographers\, filmmakers\, poets\, translators\, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war\, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a “Revolution of Dignity” against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country’s independence resulting in Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine’s east.\n \nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\n“— our love’s gone missing\, I explain to a friend/ it vanished in one of the wars/ we waged in our kitchen/ — change the word ‘war’ to ‘crisis\,’ he suggests/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.”\n \nLike in Yakimchuk’s poem\, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. The work consists of a series of collages and a collection of Polaroids that are accompanied by animations and video clips seen solely through the use of an augmented reality application (Virtual Mutations).\n\nThe scenarios presented in the static images act as literal stages for animated narratives. What once was a captured single moment echoes into motion\, creating an additional layer as to what will come thereafter. A dialogue between the past and the present is established and the app itself acts as a mediator between these tenses\, allowing the observer to have a glimpse of the afterthought\, that range from digital collages to Polaroid instant film.\n\nAbout the Artist\nCamila Magrane is a multimedia artist originally from Caracas\, Venezuela. Having a father from the U.S. and a mother from Venezuela\, she grew up alternating between both countries. Being fully exposed to two different cultures gave her a greater understanding of what it means to have various perspectives. After graduating from film school in Caracas\, she moved to San Francisco where she freelanced as an editor and camera operator. After discovering a passion for video games and interactive media\, Magrane obtained a BS in computer science with a concentration in game development. This eventually led her to working in the game industry as a cinematic artist.\n\nMagrane has been pursuing a professional career as a multimedia artist since 2017\, working within a variety of mediums\, from photography and collage to animation and virtual/augmented reality (AR). She has been most noted for the creation of her AR image-based work where she’s established a postmodern aesthetic by combining traditional darkroom techniques with the use of digital tools.\n\nPrior to her career in the arts\, Magrane worked as a community organizer and teacher\, creating and managing a curriculum for teaching 3rd-6th graders coding skills in public schools in Caracas\, Venezuela. Specific genes are known to regulate organ form\, but the mechanical programs by which organ tissues sculpt themselves into shape remain mysterious. Here\, we trace the dynamics and mechanical interactions driving inner organ shape change using the embryonic midgut of the fly Drosophila melanogaster. By leveraging deep-tissue light-sheet microscopy for whole-organ live imaging and building a computational framework for extracting tissue deformations in dynamic 3D geometries\, we find a mechanical program folding the gut. Hox genes control the emergence of high-frequency calcium pulses\, which trigger muscle contractions. These contractions\, in turn\, induce cell shape change in the adjacent tissue layer\, collectively driving a pattern of in-plane tissue deformations. As seen in a simple model\, this in-plane pattern is linked to out-of-plane organ folding. These findings offer a mechanical route for gene expression to induce organ shape change: genetic patterning in one layer triggers a physical process to fold the organ into chambers. I will detail two examples of sub-GeV hadrophilic dark matter models which these future direct detection endeavors may discover while highlighting the serious challenges model builders face. The first achieves probe-able direct detection cross sections by way of a late-time\, dark-sector phase transition\, while the second does so by assuming the entire thermal bath is reheated at very low temperatures. Both models lead to dark matter-nucleon scattering cross sections of interest for near-future experiments for dark matter masses in the range of 100 keV-100 MeV\, often in parts of parameter space with few or no models. The Invention of Fascist Governmentality: 1925-1940 DESCRIPTION:In this lecture\, Victoria de Grazia develops the concept of “fascist governmentality” to capture the historically distinctive mode of political rule that emerged at the beginning of 20th century. Focusing on Italy\, she will explore how Mussolini assembled instruments of power\, networks\, and constituencies well outside of the ordinary sphere of governance to implement his solution to “the population question.” A focus on governmentality\, she argues\, helps account for the extraordinary political fortune of fascism globally in its first iteration (1920-1945)\, its capacity to disrupt the conventions of liberal imperial governance\, and the difficulty of defeating it through peaceful means. Unreinforced concrete can be considered an artificial stone\, so the natural geometries for this material happy in compression follow the same structural principles that have kept Gothic cathedrals standing for centuries. It allows significantly reducing the amount of material needed but also building with lesser emitting materials. Recent developments in computational design\, engineering\, and construction-scale digital fabrication allow the introduction of concrete as a truly sustainable solution for spanning structures such as floor “slabs” or footbridges. This talk will introduce how we can disrupt concrete construction\, providing solutions that are lightweight\, low in embodied emissions\, and use construction demolition waste. Designing for circularity\, a discrete masonry logic is introduced\, enabling dry-assembled prefab\, demountable and reusable or easily recyclable at the end of its life. Lastly\, we will go beyond an academic exercise to propose economically competitive innovations available at scale and globally. Sounds too good to be true?\n\nPhilippe Block is professor at the Institute of Technology in Architecture (ITA) at ETH Zurich\, where he leads the Block Research Group (BRG) with Dr. Tom Van Mele and is Head of the Institute. Philippe is also the Director of the Swiss National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) on Digital Fabrication. He studied architecture and structural engineering at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology\, where he earned his Ph.D. in 2009. The involved artists are painters\, photographers\, filmmakers\, poets\, translators\, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war\, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a “Revolution of Dignity” against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country’s independence resulting in Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine’s east.\n \nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\n“— our love’s gone missing\, I explain to a friend/ it vanished in one of the wars/ we waged in our kitchen/ — change the word ‘war’ to ‘crisis\,’ he suggests/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.”\n \nLike in Yakimchuk’s poem\, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. Rather than imagining it as a singular\, coherent object\, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity\, difference\, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts\, “feminism” in Japan can invoke sharply different associations\, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority\, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters\, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families\, workplaces\, schools\, political institutions\, and laws\, among many other contexts. What once was a captured single moment echoes into motion\, creating an additional layer as to what will come thereafter. A dialogue between the past and the present is established and the app itself acts as a mediator between these tenses\, allowing the observer to have a glimpse of the afterthought\, that range from digital collages to Polaroid instant film.\n\nAbout the Artist\nCamila Magrane is a multimedia artist originally from Caracas\, Venezuela. Having a father from the U.S. and a mother from Venezuela\, she grew up alternating between both countries. Being fully exposed to two different cultures gave her a greater understanding of what it means to have various perspectives. After graduating from film school in Caracas\, she moved to San Francisco where she freelanced as an editor and camera operator. After discovering a passion for video games and interactive media\, Magrane obtained a BS in computer science with a concentration in game development. This eventually led her to working in the game industry as a cinematic artist.\n\nMagrane has been pursuing a professional career as a multimedia artist since 2017\, working within a variety of mediums\, from photography and collage to animation and virtual/augmented reality (AR). She has been most noted for the creation of her AR image-based work where she’s established a postmodern aesthetic by combining traditional darkroom techniques with the use of digital tools.\n\nPrior to her career in the arts\, Magrane worked as a community organizer and teacher\, creating and managing a curriculum for teaching 3rd-6th graders coding skills in public schools in Caracas\, Venezuela. She continues to be active in community work by giving talks and workshops revolving around the topics of art\, technology\, and the use of AR as a creative medium.\n\nCamila Magrane has exhibited work internationally in numerous exhibitions\, event spaces\, fairs\, and festivals. U-M ChE faculty and graduate students are especially encouraged to attend.\n\nAbstract:\nHeterogeneous interfaces\, especially those formed between molecules and solid-state substrates\, are ubiquitous in nanoscale functional materials and energy related applications. Characterization of the electronic structure and optical properties at these interfaces is crucial for understanding charge transfer dynamics and energy conversion mechanisms. Many-body perturbation theory\, such as the GW-BSE formalism (G: Greens function\; W: screened Coulomb interaction\; BSE: Bethe-Salpeter equation)\, provides a formal theoretical framework for predicting band energy level alignments and optical properties\, but the computational cost for typical interfaces is high. Here\, I will introduce new methodological advancements for accelerating many-body calculations of large heterogeneous interfaces based on the idea of dielectric embedding. Furthermore\, I will show applications to systems of experimental importance for insights into structure-property relationships\, including covalent organic frameworks adsorbed on metal substrates and (metallo)phthalocyanine molecules adsorbed on transition-metal dichalcogenides. Lastly\, I will discuss our recent work on the characterization of quantum dot assemblies and relevant interfaces.\n\nSpeaker Bio:\nZhenfei got his B.S. in chemistry from Peking University in China in 2007. He then worked with Professor Kieron Burke in University of California\, Irvine for his Ph.D. in theoretical chemistry between 2007 and 2012. After that\, he worked with Professor Jeffrey Neaton as a postdoc in Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and University of California\, Berkeley. In the intervening years\, similar observations have been made about other\, large structures that self-assemble in the cell. This raises a fascinating question: How does the cell\, which is micrometers in length\, measure its size with nothing more at its disposal than nanometer-sized proteins that diffuse\, on occasion bump into each other\, and transiently stick together? In this talk I will describe quantitative experiments and related theory that reveal general principles of how cells control the size of their internal structures. The case of self-assembly of actin cables in budding yeast is particularly interesting in this context\, as it provides an example of a structure whose size is well matched to the size of the cell. A well-known example is the copper oxides\, where a charge density wave (CDW) is ordered well above and strongly coupled to the magnetic order to form spin-charge separated stripes that compete with superconductivity. Recently\, such rich phase diagrams have also been revealed in correlated topological materials. In two-dimensional kagome lattice metals consisting of corner-sharing triangles\, the geometry of the lattice can produce flat bands with localized electrons\, non-trivial topology\, chiral magnetic order\, superconductivity and CDW order. While CDW has been found in weakly electron correlated nonmagnetic AV_3Sb_5 (A = K\, Rb\, Cs)\, it has not yet been observed in correlated magnetic ordered kagome lattice metals. Here we report the discovery of CDW within the antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordered phase of kagome lattice FeGe. The CDW in FeGe occurs at wavevectors identical to that of AV_3Sb_5\, enhances the AFM ordered moment\, and induces an emergent anomalous Hall effect. Our findings suggest that CDW in FeGe arises from the combination of electron correlations-driven AFM order and van Hove singularities-driven instability possibly associated with a chiral flux phase\, in stark contrast to strongly correlated copper oxides and nickelates\, where the CDW precedes or accompanies the magnetic order. We will also discuss our recent discovery of a spin nematic phase in FeGe. Quasiperiodic operators can be placed somewhere in between: depending on the potential sampling function and the Diophantine properties of the frequency and the phase\, one can have a large variety of spectral types. Z. Brown's work focuses on unearthing\, examining\, and challenging the intersectional harms of algorithmic technologies on disabled people living at the margins of the margins. From algorithmic worker management\, credit decisions\, threat assessment\, health predictions\, decision-making technologies\, and surveillance apparatuses\, algorithmic and automated technologies increasingly have an outsized impact on disabled people\, particularly disabled people from multiply-marginalized communities. Lydia's work calls attention to the particular ways in which algorithmic technologies serve to exclude disabled people from public participation and social integration\, exacerbate existing hyper-surveillance of and attendant harms to disabled people\, and manufacture new means of regulating disabled people's lives.\n\nLydia X. Z. Brown is an advocate\, organizer\, attorney\, strategist\, and writer whose work focuses on interpersonal and state violence against disabled people at the intersections of race\, class\, gender\, sexuality\, faith\, language\, and nation. Lydia is Policy Counsel for Privacy & Data at the Center for Democracy & Technology\, where their work focuses on algorithmic harm and disability discrimination. Lydia is also an adjunct lecturer in the Women's and Gender Studies Program and the Disability Studies Program at Georgetown University\, as well as an adjunct professorial lecturer in American Studies in the Department of Critical Race\, Gender\, and Culture Studies at American University. They are co-president of the Disability Rights Bar Association and Disability Justice Committee representative on the National Lawyers Guild board.\n\nM. Remi Yergeau is the Arthur F. Thurnau Associate Professor of Digital Studies and English at the University of Michigan. They direct the Digital Accessible Futures Lab as a part of the DISCO Network\, which is funded by the Mellon Foundation. As randomized controlled experiments are not always feasible\, researchers are looking towards Mendelian Randomization (MR) as an alternative method for probing the causal mechanisms of common diseases. In MR\, natural genetic variations are used as instrumental variables to unbiasedly estimate causal effects in the presence of unmeasured environmental confounding. Partly due to its convenience\, MR has recently been widely employed in epidemiology and other related areas of population science. However\, the phenomenon that “all genes affect every complex trait” complicates Mendelian Randomization (MR) studies as most genetic variants will likely be invalid instruments. Furthermore\, causal relationships between risk factors and diseases can be more complex than depicted in a simple diagram. During the presentation\, I will describe a new comprehensive framework that we have developed to address multiple challenges in MR. Specifically\, I will focus on the issues of pervasive horizontal pleiotropy\, weak genetic instruments\, and the temporal relationship between risk factors and disease progression. They paint on found materials in refugee housing\, illustrate in bomb shelters\, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document\, create\, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful\, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\n \nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz\, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna)\, \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters\, photographers\, filmmakers\, poets\, translators\, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war\, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a “Revolution of Dignity” against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country’s independence resulting in Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine’s east.\n \nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\n“— our love’s gone missing\, I explain to a friend/ it vanished in one of the wars/ we waged in our kitchen/ — change the word ‘war’ to ‘crisis\,’ he suggests/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.”\n \nLike in Yakimchuk’s poem\, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine\, juxtapose\, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships\, the workings interior lives\, and perceptions of social roles. The featured artworks and documents engage a range of subjects from women volunteering as combatants to the processes of grieving and reflect ongoing discourses in Ukrainian feminist scholarship. Rather than imagining it as a singular\, coherent object\, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity\, difference\, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts\, “feminism” in Japan can invoke sharply different associations\, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority\, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters\, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families\, workplaces\, schools\, political institutions\, and laws\, among many other contexts. Many ­– but certainly not all – feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects\, working toward recognition\, repair\, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\n\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Created by nine contemporary artists in Japan and the United States\, the portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of \"feminism\" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences\, needs\, and activism within Japan. The work consists of a series of collages and a collection of Polaroids that are accompanied by animations and video clips seen solely through the use of an augmented reality application (Virtual Mutations).\n\nThe scenarios presented in the static images act as literal stages for animated narratives. What once was a captured single moment echoes into motion\, creating an additional layer as to what will come thereafter. A dialogue between the past and the present is established and the app itself acts as a mediator between these tenses\, allowing the observer to have a glimpse of the afterthought\, that range from digital collages to Polaroid instant film.\n\nAbout the Artist\nCamila Magrane is a multimedia artist originally from Caracas\, Venezuela. Having a father from the U.S. and a mother from Venezuela\, she grew up alternating between both countries. Being fully exposed to two different cultures gave her a greater understanding of what it means to have various perspectives. After graduating from film school in Caracas\, she moved to San Francisco where she freelanced as an editor and camera operator. After discovering a passion for video games and interactive media\, Magrane obtained a BS in computer science with a concentration in game development. This eventually led her to working in the game industry as a cinematic artist.\n\nMagrane has been pursuing a professional career as a multimedia artist since 2017\, working within a variety of mediums\, from photography and collage to animation and virtual/augmented reality (AR). She has been most noted for the creation of her AR image-based work where she’s established a postmodern aesthetic by combining traditional darkroom techniques with the use of digital tools.\n\nPrior to her career in the arts\, Magrane worked as a community organizer and teacher\, creating and managing a curriculum for teaching 3rd-6th graders coding skills in public schools in Caracas\, Venezuela. She continues to be active in community work by giving talks and workshops revolving around the topics of art\, technology\, and the use of AR as a creative medium.\n\nCamila Magrane has exhibited work internationally in numerous exhibitions\, event spaces\, fairs\, and festivals.
