During these decades\, the notion that abstraction was a purely formal and American art form\, concerned only with timeless themes disconnected from the present\, was met with increased skepticism. Women artists and artists of color began to actively and assertively explore abstraction’s possibilities. The artworks in Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics: The 1960s and 1970s demonstrate both radical and disarming changes in how artists worked and what they thought their art was about. In this immersive installation of photographs and wallpaper\, Michigan-based photographer Jason DeMarte weaves together detailed images of fauna (birds\, caterpillars\, and moths) and flora (local plants and flowers). Each scene is set against ominous cloudy skies\, which rain melted ice cream\, whipped topping\, candies\, and glossy paint. Overburdened with decorations\, the flowers and plants begin to decay\, leaving the birds and insects unable to survive for long in this overly sweet environment. DeMarte’s illusionistic landscapes recall the long tradition of still life painting in Europe and America\, and a rich history of fantasy environments represented in literature and film—from Alice’s Wonderland to Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory. Two retired U-M professors recently gifted four works of art by Schiele to UMMA. Throughout their lifetimes\, Frances McSparran (English language and literature) and the late Ernst Pulgram (Romance and classical linguistics) collected over forty Austrian and German Expressionist works\, donating many of them to the Museum. The materials collected in this exhibit\, all held in the Special Collections Research Center\, showcase not only the variety\, beauty\, and originality of turn-of-the-century print-making\, but also new ideas about what a magazine can do: namely\, create distinctive communities around avant-garde ideas outside of mainstream channels. The communities imagined in these magazines are sometimes explicitly political or aesthetic\, but more often both combine in writers’ and artists’ resistance to mass-market\, industrial\, bourgeois\, and nationalist print cultures.\n\nThe magazines in this exhibit are mostly American and British\, but many are distinctively cosmopolitan\, crossing borders to engage with international movements like socialism\, decadence\, and modernism in their attempts to create an audience united by aesthetic and political ideals rather than nationality. Although the little magazines’ resistance to mainstream journalism shortened their lifespan and restricted their circulation\, their experimental approach has had a lasting impact on our sense of magazines as flexible aesthetic and social media. In 2005\, fairy doors began to appear in downtown Ann Arbor and Jonathan began documenting them in earnest as a certified fairyologist. He studied graphic design\, architecture and illustration\, while Kathleen is a teacher of young children\, a writer and professional storyteller. Together they discover the stories behind the fairy doors. This allows contemplation of the art making process and careful organization of the parts. As she assembles it piece by piece\, the work grows in a way that closely relates to painting. Bieri received a grant from the State of Michigan in 2000 to study quilts and their patterns. She discovered that they often touch people on a personal level and encourage memories. Whether an army blanket or quilt\, she delights to find a treasure that has a personal history that goes well beyond her and extends to the observer. Hide & Seek\, Bieri’s current series of art quilts incorporating fabrics with history\, encourages viewer interaction and reminiscence. Some works she created to reach out to a greater power\, while others honor a particular person or joyful time. Her sculptural paper tapestries can be installed in a number of different ways\, reflecting the impermanence of this world. LeBreton lives and works in Chicago and has been working with handmade paper for ten years. She enjoys its surprising properties: it is light and appears fragile\, yet it is also pliable\, absorbs color beautifully\, and is very strong. Howard recognizes that color is important in the food we eat\, the clothes we wear\, our homes\, our cars\, and even our pets. She points out that “there is a great deal more to color than what meets the eye.” Howard utilizes hyper-realism and enhanced depth of field to create highly detailed soft pastel drawings on canvas that are often mistaken for photographs. She uses the beauty and intense color of organic soft pastels to elicit emotional responses from viewers\, recognizing and working with the inherent qualities of color. Each scene is set against ominous cloudy skies\, which rain melted ice cream\, whipped topping\, candies\, and glossy paint. Overburdened with decorations\, the flowers and plants begin to decay\, leaving the birds and insects unable to survive for long in this overly sweet environment. DeMarte’s illusionistic landscapes recall the long tradition of still life painting in Europe and America\, and a rich history of fantasy environments represented in literature and film—from Alice’s Wonderland to Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory. Religious devotion in ancient Kush (a region located in modern-day northern Sudan)\, involved pilgrimage and leaving informal marks on temples\, pyramids\, and other monumental structures. These graffiti are found in temples throughout the later (“Meroitic”) period of Kush\, when it bordered Roman Egypt. They represent one of the few direct traces of the devotional practices of private people in Kush and hint at individuals’ thoughts\, values\, and daily lives. This exhibition explores the times and places in which Kushite graffiti were inscribed through photos\, text\, and interactive media presentations. The materials collected in this exhibit\, all held in the Special Collections Research Center\, showcase not only the variety\, beauty\, and originality of turn-of-the-century print-making\, but also new ideas about what a magazine can do: namely\, create distinctive communities around avant-garde ideas outside of mainstream channels. The communities imagined in these magazines are sometimes explicitly political or aesthetic\, but more often both combine in writers’ and artists’ resistance to mass-market\, industrial\, bourgeois\, and nationalist print cultures.\n\nThe magazines in this exhibit are mostly American and British\, but many are distinctively cosmopolitan\, crossing borders to engage with international movements like socialism\, decadence\, and modernism in their attempts to create an audience united by aesthetic and political ideals rather than nationality. Bieri received a grant from the State of Michigan in 2000 to study quilts and their patterns. She discovered that they often touch people on a personal level and encourage memories. Working at the turn of the twentieth century\, Schiele challenged the classical conventions of the day producing emotionally charged—often unsettling—drawings and watercolors depicting landscapes\, portraits\, and nudes. Two retired U-M professors recently gifted four works of art by Schiele to UMMA. Throughout their lifetimes\, Frances McSparran (English language and literature) and the late Ernst Pulgram (Romance and classical linguistics) collected over forty Austrian and German Expressionist works\, donating many of them to the Museum. Religious devotion in ancient Kush (a region located in modern-day northern Sudan)\, involved pilgrimage and leaving informal marks on temples\, pyramids\, and other monumental structures. These graffiti are found in temples throughout the later (“Meroitic”) period of Kush\, when it bordered Roman Egypt. They represent one of the few direct traces of the devotional practices of private people in Kush and hint at individuals’ thoughts\, values\, and daily lives. The materials collected in this exhibit\, all held in the Special Collections Research Center\, showcase not only the variety\, beauty\, and originality of turn-of-the-century print-making\, but also new ideas about what a magazine can do: namely\, create distinctive communities around avant-garde ideas outside of mainstream channels. Bieri received a grant from the State of Michigan in 2000 to study quilts and their patterns. She discovered that they often touch people on a personal level and encourage memories. The materials collected in this exhibit\, all held in the Special Collections Research Center\, showcase not only the variety\, beauty\, and originality of turn-of-the-century print-making\, but also new ideas about what a magazine can do: namely\, create distinctive communities around avant-garde ideas outside of mainstream channels. The communities imagined in these magazines are sometimes explicitly political or aesthetic\, but more often both combine in writers’ and artists’ resistance to mass-market\, industrial\, bourgeois\, and nationalist print cultures.\n\nThe magazines in this exhibit are mostly American and British\, but many are distinctively cosmopolitan\, crossing borders to engage with international movements like socialism\, decadence\, and modernism in their attempts to create an audience united by aesthetic and political ideals rather than nationality. Religious devotion in ancient Kush (a region located in modern-day northern Sudan)\, involved pilgrimage and leaving informal marks on temples\, pyramids\, and other monumental structures. These graffiti are found in temples throughout the later (“Meroitic”) period of Kush\, when it bordered Roman Egypt. They represent one of the few direct traces of the devotional practices of private people in Kush and hint at individuals’ thoughts\, values\, and daily lives. This exhibition explores the times and places in which Kushite graffiti were inscribed through photos\, text\, and interactive media presentations. Refreshments will be served. \n\nCindy Sowers received her B.A. from Oakland University\, her M.A. from University of Michigan in Comparative Literature\, and her Ph.D. also from the University of Michigan in Comparative Literature. During her Masters program in 1973\, she started teaching at the Residential College in the First Year Seminar and French programs. Her dissertation\, The Shared Structure of Craft and Song: A Study of Homer’s Narrative Art\, revealed passions for narrative and visual analysis comparatively understood that would characterize her teaching thereafter. She participated in an interdisciplinary group composed of Residential College humanities and fine arts faculty who together constructed the Arts and Ideas in the Humanities concentration. Cindy's recent course offerings have included critical approaches to the literature and visual arts of classic modernism\, postmodernism\, Shakespeare and Rome\, the heritage of Greece\, the psychoanalytic interpretation of the arts\, and many others. She combines analyses of literary texts\, visual arts\, and philosophy to hone in on the animating spirit of a cultural moment and space. She has presented at the Royal Shakespeare Company's 2006 U-M residency\, as part of the RC Faculty Colloquium\, for the LSA Comparative Literature and the Colloquium on Critical Theory sponsored by the LSA Department of English Language and Literature\, and at the Residential College's 50th Anniversary celebration. She has received the Ford Foundation Fellowship\, the Rackham Prize twice\, the U-M Excellence in Teaching Award\, the Matthews Underclass Teaching Award\, and is a member of the Medieval Academy of America. The Pacific Northwest of North America has a rich history of phylogeographic research\, and temperate rainforest endemics from the region have been influenced by a diverse array of factors\, including climatic and geologic events. By studying groups from this region in a comparative context\, we identify ecological and morphological traits influencing species responses to these events. Further\, by studying speciation and species limits in an integrative context\, we can begin to understand how these and other factors have contributed to speciation. We focus on terrestrial taildropper slugs (Genus Prophysaon)\, and infer a history of divergence followed by secondary contact\, with ecological data suggesting that reinforcement may have driven speciation. By integrating across datatypes and considering the processes that drive speciation\, we infer biologically meaningful species limits and learn about which factors led to speciation. A geofence is defined as a volume of airspace with specific temporal\, spatial\, and permission constraints. This thesis develops geofencing as a tool for individual UAS and for managing airspace utilization through UAS Traffic Management (UTM). Permissions constraints determine which UAS may fly within each geofence. As a safety system\, geofencing aims to keep the UAS within the airspace sectors (keep-in geofences) it has permission to access. Similarly\, geofencing prevents the UAS from entering the airspace sectors it does not have permission to access (keep-out geofences). This thesis offers three specific contributions to geofencing. \n\nFirst\, a methodology is developed to enable the UTM system to build and manage the set of active geofences\, ensuring a maximum of one geofence per volume of airspace at any given time. Spatial priority of geofences within the UTM system is awarded in order of request\, with always active (static) geofences having top priority. Unlike static geofences\, dynamic geofences appear and disappear at user-specified times and are spatially and temporally deconflicted to maximize authorized airspace volume. Polygon set operations are used to deconflict the horizontal boundaries of newly requested geofence sets from the existing UTM approved geofence set. \n\nSecond\, a Triangle Weight Characterization with Adjacency (TWCA) algorithm is developed to efficiently determine whether a UAS is within a given geofence independent of the complexity of its boundary. This algorithm enables the UAS geofence module to quickly check whether the UAS is violating a geofence boundary by decomposing the horizontal boundary into triangles and tracking the occupied triangle over time through an adjacency graph. To test the performance of TWCA against the industry standard of Ray Casting\, the run-time per query is calculated for randomly generated geofences and flight paths. The run-time of Ray Casting scales linearly with the number of geofence vertices while the average run-time of TWCA is constant independent of number of vertices. This time independence from geofence complexity is managed by a pre-processing step that enables real-time operation of this algorithm.\n\nThird\, to enable the UAS operator or geofence automation to intervene prior to a boundary violation\, the geofence polygons are scaled to provide warning and override cues. This boundary layering algorithm utilizes a uniform and a directional buffer distance to scale keep-in geofences inward and keep-out geofences outward. The layering algorithm is designed to handle arbitrary concave polygons\, with special cases identified and analyzed through Monte Carlo simulation. Multiple layering techniques are utilized in parallel to increase the likelihood of finding a scaled boundary solution. The statistical results show that the likelihood of success for inward and outward scaling decreases as buffer magnitude increases.\n\nThe contributions of this thesis are combined to form a full system simulation\, from the request of a new geofence and access to an existing geofence through the prevention of the boundary violation by the UAS. This allows contemplation of the art making process and careful organization of the parts. As she assembles it piece by piece\, the work grows in a way that closely relates to painting. Bieri received a grant from the State of Michigan in 2000 to study quilts and their patterns. She discovered that they often touch people on a personal level and encourage memories. Whether an army blanket or quilt\, she delights to find a treasure that has a personal history that goes well beyond her and extends to the observer. Hide & Seek\, Bieri’s current series of art quilts incorporating fabrics with history\, encourages viewer interaction and reminiscence. Her sculptural paper tapestries can be installed in a number of different ways\, reflecting the impermanence of this world. LeBreton lives and works in Chicago and has been working with handmade paper for ten years. She enjoys its surprising properties: it is light and appears fragile\, yet it is also pliable\, absorbs color beautifully\, and is very strong. She points out that “there is a great deal more to color than what meets the eye.” Howard utilizes hyper-realism and enhanced depth of field to create highly detailed soft pastel drawings on canvas that are often mistaken for photographs. His paintings depict his ideal world and how its inhabitants should treat each other. Byrd is known as the Artist of Happiness and the overall theme of his paintings is love and acceptance. Religious devotion in ancient Kush (a region located in modern-day northern Sudan)\, involved pilgrimage and leaving informal marks on temples\, pyramids\, and other monumental structures. These graffiti are found in temples throughout the later (“Meroitic”) period of Kush\, when it bordered Roman Egypt. They represent one of the few direct traces of the devotional practices of private people in Kush and hint at individuals’ thoughts\, values\, and daily lives. This exhibition explores the times and places in which Kushite graffiti were inscribed through photos\, text\, and interactive media presentations. Refreshments will be served. \n\nCindy Sowers received her B.A. from Oakland University\, her M.A. from University of Michigan in Comparative Literature\, and her Ph.D. also from the University of Michigan in Comparative Literature. During her Masters program in 1973\, she started teaching at the Residential College in the First Year Seminar and French programs. Her dissertation\, The Shared Structure of Craft and Song: A Study of Homer’s Narrative Art\, revealed passions for narrative and visual analysis comparatively understood that would characterize her teaching thereafter. She participated in an interdisciplinary group composed of Residential College humanities and fine arts faculty who together constructed the Arts and Ideas in the Humanities concentration. Cindy's recent course offerings have included critical approaches to the literature and visual arts of classic modernism\, postmodernism\, Shakespeare and Rome\, the heritage of Greece\, the psychoanalytic interpretation of the arts\, and many others. She combines analyses of literary texts\, visual arts\, and philosophy to hone in on the animating spirit of a cultural moment and space. She has presented at the Royal Shakespeare Company's 2006 U-M residency\, as part of the RC Faculty Colloquium\, for the LSA Comparative Literature and the Colloquium on Critical Theory sponsored by the LSA Department of English Language and Literature\, and at the Residential College's 50th Anniversary celebration. She has received the Ford Foundation Fellowship\, the Rackham Prize twice\, the U-M Excellence in Teaching Award\, the Matthews Underclass Teaching Award\, and is a member of the Medieval Academy of America. Cindy retires from her position as a Senior Lecturer and Lecturer IV\, having served in the Residential College for 46 years. She has an active art practice\, and her work will be displayed in the RC Art Gallery in a fall 2019 exhibition. Much has been said regarding these refugees\, but all too often the voices of refugees themselves are left out of the conversation.\n\nThis exhibit uses the data collected from a Photovoice project\, combining photography and transcriptions from groups discussions with adolescent refugees to better understand the lived experiences of adolescent refugees. In the early 1970s\, that question was hotly debated as artists\, critics\, and the public grappled with the relationship between art\, politics\, race\, and feminism. Many of those debates centered on bringing to light the roles that gender and race played in how “great modern art” was defined and assessed\, and on employing art to advance civil rights. Within this discourse\, abstraction had an especially fraught role.
