SUMMARY:Exhibition:Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s
DESCRIPTION:Can abstract art be about politics? In the early 1970s\, that question was hotly debated as artists\, critics\, and the public grappled with the relationship between art\, politics\, race\, and feminism. Many of those debates centered on bringing to light the roles that gender and race played in how “great modern art” was defined and assessed\, and on employing art to advance civil rights. Within this discourse\, abstraction had an especially fraught role. To many\, the decision by women artists and artists of color  to make abstract art seemed to represent a retreat from politics and protest: an abnegation of a commitment to civil rights and feminism. Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s presents large-scale work by four leading American artists—Helen Frankenthaler\, Sam Gilliam\, Al Loving\, and Louise Nevelson—who chose abstraction as a means of expression within the intense political climate of the early 1970s.\n\nUMMA gratefully acknowledges the following donors for their generous support of this exhibition:\n\nLead Exhibition Sponsors: University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, and College of Literature\, Science\, and the Arts\n\nExhibition Endowment Donors:  Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund\, Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, and Robert and Janet Miller Fund\n\nUniversity of Michigan Funding Partners: Institute for Research on Women and Gender\, School of Social Work\, Department of Political Science\, and Department of Women's Studies

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics:
DESCRIPTION:In the midst of the political and cultural upheavals of the 60s and 70s\, artists\, critics\, and the public grappled with the relationship between art\, politics\, race\, and feminism. During these decades\, the notion that abstraction was a purely formal and American art form\, concerned only with timeless themes disconnected from the present\, was met with increased skepticism. Women artists and artists of color began to actively and assertively explore abstraction’s possibilities. The artworks in Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics: The 1960s and 1970s demonstrate both radical and disarming changes in how artists worked and what they thought their art was about. Their new formal and intellectual strategies—seen here across large-scale and miniature work—dramatically transformed the practice of abstraction in the 1960s and 1970s in a politically shifting American landscape.\n\nUMMA gratefully acknowledges the following donors for their generous support:\n\nLead Exhibition Sponsors: University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, and College of Literature\, Science\, and the Arts\n\nExhibition Endowment Donors:  Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund\, Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, and Robert and Janet Miller Fund\n\nUniversity of Michigan Funding Partners: Institute for Research on Women and Gender\, School of Social Work\, Department of Political Science\, and Department of Women's Studies

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Ceal Floyer: Things
DESCRIPTION:Visitors entering Floyer’s installation Things (2009) in the Irving Stenn\, Jr. Family Gallery encounter a collection of identical plinths that would ordinarily be used to display art objects in the Museum\, but these platforms are empty. In place of visible objects\, each plinth is equipped with a speaker from which we hear the word “thing” sung—edited out of and isolated from a range of pop songs. The result is an amusing and thoughtful exploration of language\, meaning\, and the conventions of museum presentation and spectatorship.\n \nThe installation\, like much of Berlin-based artist Ceal Floyer’s art\, is characteristically austere\, but its visual simplicity masks a more complicated message—often a wry cerebral twist the artist creates through language-based symbols and aesthetic devices. Floyer’s work is rooted in conceptual art\, in which the idea\, delivered through words or acts that undercut or supersede formal qualities\, is the essence of the artwork.\n\nLead support  for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan College of Engineering and the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment. Additional generous support is provided by the University of Michigan Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design\, Institute for the Humanities\, CEW+ Frances and Sydney Lewis Visiting Leaders Fund\, and School of Music\, Theatre & Dance.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Copies and Invention in East Asia
DESCRIPTION:Far from being frowned upon as uncreative\, in China\, Korea\, and Japan\, copying has long been considered a valuable practice. Through works of art spanning ancient to contemporary times\, Copies and Invention in East Asia challenges our understanding of originality\, and presents copying as an act of imaginative interpretation. The exhibition includes burial goods that conjure a world for the deceased\; Buddhist sculptures produced in multiples to amplify religious experience and meaning\; paintings in which a master’s brushstrokes are faithfully duplicated as a way of shaping the self\; and contemporary works that address multiplicity and duplication in the modern world.\n\nLead support is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies\, Center for Japanese Studies\, Nam Center for Korean Studies\, School of Information\, and College of Engineering. SUMMARY:Exhibition:New at UMMA: Egon Schiele
DESCRIPTION:Egon Schiele (1890-1918)\, one of the most well-known and controversial figures of Austrian Expressionism\, made more than 3\,000 works over the span of his short life and career. Working at the turn of the twentieth century\, Schiele challenged the classical conventions of the day producing emotionally charged—often unsettling—drawings and watercolors depicting landscapes\, portraits\, and nudes. Two retired U-M professors recently gifted four works of art by Schiele to UMMA. Throughout their lifetimes\, Frances McSparran (English language and literature) and the late Ernst Pulgram (Romance and classical linguistics) collected over forty Austrian and German Expressionist works\, donating many of them to the Museum. The three watercolors and one drawing on view in this special installation complement the couple’s previous gifts of works by Schiele and his contemporaries Oskar Kokoschka\, George Grosz\, and Gustav Klimt\, reuniting these important works that together provide important insights into this tumultuous period in European history.        \n\n

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:PhD Defense: Andrew McKelvey
DESCRIPTION:Title: Short-pulse Driven Transport Measurements in Dense Plasmas\n\nChair: Prof. Karl Krushelnick\n\nAbstract: Accurate transport properties---such as opacity\, and electrical & thermal conductivities---provide crucial input for the intricate physics models necessary to describe the dynamics of complex\, high energy density (HED) systems. This includes stars\, giant planets\, and inertial confinement fusion plasmas. However\, these theoretical transport models present challenges as the phase space often sits at the intersection of solid\, liquid\, gas\, and plasma where many effects of comparable magnitude must be considered. Additionally\, the transient nature of such high energy density materials complicates experimental measurement\, and many theories remain sparsely benchmarked by data.\nIn the laboratory\, HED material must be created via some combination of material compression to very high densities or by adding large amounts of energy to the material in a very short time. This thesis focuses on experiments utilizing the second technique. X-ray free-electron lasers (tau<100 fs) or short-pulse lasers (tau<1 ps) are capable of heating materials from room temperature to tens or even many hundreds of eV while keeping densities at appreciable fractions of their ambient value. This allows for the probing of material properties before hydrodynamics phenomena become dominant.\nFirst\, an experimental platform designed to constrain thermal conductivity models in warm dense matter is presented. Its basis relies on differentially heating multilayer targets (one high-Z layer and one low- to mid-Z layer) to generate a thermal gradient. This concept was first demonstrated using the Titan laser at the Jupiter Laser Facility\, creating an intense proton beam to heat a gold/aluminum multilayer target. The temperature\, reflectivity\, and expansion of the rear surface were observed with time-resolved diagnostics as the thermal energy from the hot gold layer reached the coldest part of the aluminum layer. The data were compared with hydrodynamics models that self-consistently used the electrical and thermal conductivities to calculate observables. Measured temperatures were too low relative to predictions\, possibly indicating the need to decrease tested conductivity models. This experiment was repeated using an X-ray free-electron laser at the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) with gold/iron targets. Data are presented for this work along with calculations and a discussion of how the different drivers impact the experimental design and data quality.\nFinally\, data from a platform designed to measure opacities using short- pulse lasers at the Orion Laser Facility are presented. Spectroscopic measurements of silicon's K-shell that are both temporally and angularly resolved are benchmarked against the radiation transfer code Cretin. The validity of the commonly-used escape factor approximation is tested against the full solution of the radiation transfer equation and found to be in good agreement for presented experimental conditions. An analysis of the effects of radial gradients on spectroscopically inferred temperatures is found to lead to errors in the peak temperature as large as 50% as well as incorrect cooling rates. This emphasizes the importance of absolute emissivity calibrations and spatially resolved spot size measurements.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Circulating the Avant-Garde: Aesthetic Counter-Publics in the Little Magazines\, 1890-1920
DESCRIPTION:Thanks to advances in color lithography and photo-engraving as well as resurgent interest in small-press publishing\, richly illustrated and typeset “little magazines” flourished between 1890 and 1920. The materials collected in this exhibit\, all held in the Special Collections Research Center\, showcase not only the variety\, beauty\, and originality of turn-of-the-century print-making\, but also new ideas about what a magazine can do: namely\, create distinctive communities around avant-garde ideas outside of mainstream channels. The communities imagined in these magazines are sometimes explicitly political or aesthetic\, but more often both combine in writers’ and artists’ resistance to mass-market\, industrial\, bourgeois\, and nationalist print cultures.\n\nThe magazines in this exhibit are mostly American and British\, but many are distinctively cosmopolitan\, crossing borders to engage with international movements like socialism\, decadence\, and modernism in their attempts to create an audience united by aesthetic and political ideals rather than nationality. Although the little magazines’ resistance to mainstream journalism shortened their lifespan and restricted their circulation\, their experimental approach has had a lasting impact on our sense of magazines as flexible aesthetic and social media.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Evidence of Urban Fairies: Multi Media
DESCRIPTION:Two U-M alums\, Jonathan B. Wright\, a life-long Ann Arborite\, and his wife Kathleen Wright\, have been finding evidence of fairies in their home since 1993. In 2005\, fairy doors began to appear in downtown Ann Arbor and Jonathan began documenting them in earnest as a certified fairyologist. He studied graphic design\, architecture and illustration\, while Kathleen is a teacher of young children\, a writer and professional storyteller. Together they discover the stories behind the fairy doors. Though Jonathan’s multi-media works require no shortage of labor\, he says\, \"imagination is the key to the fairy doors.\"\n\nGifts of Art Gallery – University Hospital Main Corridor\, Floor 2.\n1500 E. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Hide & Seek: Fiber Wall Quilts
DESCRIPTION:Jeanne Bieri’s art practice begins with the simple act of hand sewing. This allows contemplation of the art making process and careful organization of the parts. As she assembles it piece by piece\, the work grows in a way that closely relates to painting. Bieri received a grant from the State of Michigan in 2000 to study quilts and their patterns. She discovered that they often touch people on a personal level and encourage memories. Whether an army blanket or quilt\, she delights to find a treasure that has a personal history that goes well beyond her and extends to the observer. Hide & Seek\, Bieri’s current series of art quilts incorporating fabrics with history\, encourages viewer interaction and reminiscence. She received a Kresge Fellowship for her fiber pieces in 2017.\n\nGifts of Art Gallery – University Hospital Main Lobby\, Floor 1. \n1500 E. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Honor & Comfort: Handmade Paper & Mixed Media
DESCRIPTION:Each of Laurie LeBreton’s paper tapestries are a kind of meditation or prayer. Some works she created to reach out to a greater power\, while others honor a particular person or joyful time. Her sculptural paper tapestries can be installed in a number of different ways\, reflecting the impermanence of this world. LeBreton lives and works in Chicago and has been working with handmade paper for ten years. She enjoys its surprising properties: it is light and appears fragile\, yet it is also pliable\, absorbs color beautifully\, and is very strong. LeBreton particularly loves papermaking because of the calm that comes from the repeating forms in the process\, and she appreciates working with water for its beauty\, sensuality and healing qualities.\n\nGifts of Art Gallery – Taubman Health Center North Lobby\, Floor 1. \n1500 E. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents The Art of Leaves: Soft Pastel & Pencil
DESCRIPTION:Born in Houston\, Texas\, one of the most colorful cities in the U.S.\, J. Howard recognizes that color is important in the food we eat\, the clothes we wear\, our homes\, our cars\, and even our pets. She points out that “there is a great deal more to color than what meets the eye.” Howard utilizes hyper-realism and enhanced depth of field to create highly detailed soft pastel drawings on canvas that are often mistaken for photographs. She uses the beauty and intense color of organic soft pastels to elicit emotional responses from viewers\, recognizing and working with the inherent qualities of color. Also a practicing art therapist\, Howard’s award-winning work has been recognized both nationally and internationally.\n\nGifts of Art Gallery – University Hospital Main Corridor\, Floor 2.\n1500 E. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:“Structural remodeling and volumetric growth in the heart”
DESCRIPTION:Michael S. Sacks\nW.A. Moncrief Chair in Simulation Based Engineering Sciences\nProfessor of Biomedical Engineering\nOden Institute for Computational Sciences and Engineering\nThe University of Texas at Austin\n \n“Structural remodeling and volumetric growth in the heart”\n\nAbstract: \n\nMany cardiac diseases impose pressure overload leading to ventricular enlargement via the growth of cardiac myocytes and remodeling of the collagen fiber architecture. One such disease is pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH)\, which primarily affects the right ventricle (RV). The effects of PAH on the functional behavior of the RV free wall (RVFW) on RV organ-level cardiac function remain largely unexplored. Computational rodent heart models (RHM) of the normal and hypertensive states can be quite valuable in gaining insights into the pathophysiology of myocardium remodeling. Recently\, we developed high-fidelity biventricular finite-element RHMs using extensive data collected from rat hearts at normal and post-PAH time points. In this study\, we extended our model to predict the time-course adaptations of RV under PAH from normal state to post-PAH state. Our model accounted for growth processes driven by sarcomerogenesis and collagen fibrosis\, coupled with myo- and collagen fiber reorientation events. We used our model to investigate the correlations between the alterations in the wall stress\, the remodeling of the RVFW microstructure\, and the shape changes in the RV during the development of PAH. To the best of our knowledge\, this is the first work to investigate the interaction between fiber remodeling and volumetric growth in the heart. Ultimately\, the detailed description of organ-level remodeling patterns predicted by in-silico models such as ours could replace the traditional measures of RV dimensions and volume that often lead to gross and limited information on cardiac performance. Future directions of the research will also be presented.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Exhibition | Graffiti as Devotion along the Nile: El-Kurru\, Sudan
DESCRIPTION:Ancient graffiti provide a unique glimpse into the lives of individuals in antiquity. Religious devotion in ancient Kush (a region located in modern-day northern Sudan)\, involved pilgrimage and leaving informal marks on temples\, pyramids\, and other monumental structures. These graffiti are found in temples throughout the later (“Meroitic”) period of Kush\, when it bordered Roman Egypt. They represent one of the few direct traces of the devotional practices of private people in Kush and hint at individuals’ thoughts\, values\, and daily lives. This exhibition explores the times and places in which Kushite graffiti were inscribed through photos\, text\, and interactive media presentations. At the heart of the show are the hundreds of Meroitic graffiti recently discovered in a rock-cut temple by the Kelsey expedition to El-Kurru in northern Sudan.\n\nCurators: Geoff Emberling and Suzanne Davis\n\nView the online exhibition:\nhttp://exhibitions.kelsey.lsa.umich.edu/graffiti-el-kurru/

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Daughters of Memory: Paintings and Poems on the Nine Muses
DESCRIPTION:Daughters of Memory: Paintings and Poems on the Nine Muses is an interdisciplinary show of works by Cindy Sowers exploring the elusive sources for the ancient figures of the Muses\, as well as the appropriation of these figures by different artists through the ages.\n\nReception for the Artist: September 6\, approximately 4:30pm. Refreshments will be served. \n\nCindy Sowers received her B.A. from Oakland University\, her M.A. from University of Michigan in Comparative Literature\, and her Ph.D. also from the University of Michigan in Comparative Literature. During her Masters program in 1973\, she started teaching at the Residential College in the First Year Seminar and French programs. Her dissertation\, The Shared Structure of Craft and Song: A Study of Homer’s Narrative Art\, revealed passions for narrative and visual analysis comparatively understood that would characterize her teaching thereafter. She participated in an interdisciplinary group composed of Residential College humanities and fine arts faculty who together constructed the Arts and Ideas in the Humanities concentration. Cindy's recent course offerings have included critical approaches to the literature and visual arts of classic modernism\, postmodernism\, Shakespeare and Rome\, the heritage of Greece\, the psychoanalytic interpretation of the arts\, and many others. She combines analyses of literary texts\, visual arts\, and philosophy to hone in on the animating spirit of a cultural moment and space. She has presented at the Royal Shakespeare Company's 2006 U-M residency\, as part of the RC Faculty Colloquium\, for the LSA Comparative Literature and the Colloquium on Critical Theory sponsored by the LSA Department of English Language and Literature\, and at the Residential College's 50th Anniversary celebration. She has received the Ford Foundation Fellowship\, the Rackham Prize twice\, the U-M Excellence in Teaching Award\, the Matthews Underclass Teaching Award\, and is a member of the Medieval Academy of America. Cindy retires from her position as a Senior Lecturer and Lecturer IV\, having served in the Residential College for 46 years. She has an active art practice\, and her work will be displayed in the RC Art Gallery in a fall 2019 exhibition. She also maintains a personal website\, cynthiasowers.rc.lsa.umich.edu\, where she publishes essays\, poetry\, and visual artwork.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Strengths of Refugees and Their Community
DESCRIPTION:Refugees have been at the forefront of political discussion in the United States as the Syrian crisis escalates and xenophobia heightens. Much has been said regarding these refugees\, but all too often the voices of refugees themselves are left out of the conversation.\n\nThis exhibit uses the data collected from a Photovoice project\, combining photography and transcriptions from groups discussions with adolescent refugees to better understand the lived experiences of adolescent refugees. The gallery highlights five main themes that were discussed: Stability and Security\, Interpersonal Difficulties\, Rooting Factors\, Personal Growth\, and Contribution.\n\n“I wish I could help out people… Imma give them everything. Because they are my people\, I have to save my people.” -Alex

\"Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s\" presents large-scale work by four leading American artists—Helen Frankenthaler\, Sam Gilliam\, Al Loving\, and Louise Nevelson—who chose abstraction as a means of expression within the intense political climate of the early 1970s.\n\nLead support for \"Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s\" is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund\, the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Institute for Research on Women and Gender. Additional generous support is provided by the Robert and Janet Miller Fund and the University of Michigan Department of Political Science.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Bicycling Safety in the Future of Mobility
DESCRIPTION:Bicycling is an important component of future mobility for its economic\, environmental\, and health benefits. However\, the safety issues of riding a bicycle on roadways with mixed traffic have been a major concern.\n\nThis talk covers a number of recent research projects that utilize naturalistic driving data and naturalistic cycling data to (1) examine and understand the interactions between motorists and bicyclists\, and (2) support the development of automated vehicles so that they can safely interact with bicyclists on the road. The outcomes of the work could be used to support the designs of better road infrastructures\, testing and benchmarking automated driving technologies\, and support laws and regulations that aim to improve the safety of all road users.\n\nFred Feng is an assistant professor in the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering at UM-Dearborn. His research interests include behavioral data analytics\, human factors\, cognitive ergonomics\, and human-machine interaction.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:AE Chair's Distinguished Seminar Series: What Can the Aerospace Field Do About Its Diversity Problem?
DESCRIPTION:Ken Powell\nArthur F. Thurnau Professor and DEI Faculty Liaison\nAerospace Engineering\, UM\n\nThe other talks this semester will be based on research in Aerospace Sciences and Engineering. This talk is based on research in the Social Sciences - particularly Psychology\, Sociology\, Economics - and how it applies to education and careers in aerospace engineering.\n\nFor the past five years\, I have been part of a group of Michigan professors who read this social science literature\, and meet to discuss its implications on academic careers - teaching\, research\, service and hiring of faculty. We also give talks about why and how to improve diversity in faculty hiring to faculty throughout the university\, department chairs and deans\, and faculty at other universities.\n\nIn this talk\, I will present some classical and recent social science research about issues that affect our ability to hire and retain a diverse and excellent faculty\, particularly in STEM fields\, and especially in aerospace engineering. Topics will include implicit bias\, stereotype threat\, accumulation of disadvantage\, and some of the steps we are taking as a university to improve the composition of the faculty. I will also present data about the demographics of the aerospace field\, and give you some strategies for being a part of the much-needed solution to Aerospace's diversity challenges.\n\nAbout the speaker...\n\nProfessor Powell is a member and past director of the W. M. Keck Foundation Computational Fluid Dynamics Laboratory\, and a co-founder and co-director of the Center for Space Environment Modeling and the the Center for Radiative Shock Hydrodynamics. At the undergraduate level\, he teaches freshman computing\, compressible flow\, aerodynamics and aircraft design\; at the graduate level\, he teaches aerodynamics and computational fluid dynamics. His research interests include: algorithm development for fluid dynamics\, aerodynamics and plasmadynamics\; and the application of computational methods to problems in aerodynamics\, aeroelasticity\, fluid dynamics and space environment/space weather. His articles appear in Journal of Fluid Mechanics\, Journal of Computational Physics\, and Journal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics\, among others. He is also a co-author of Multi-Media Fluid Mechanics. He has received a number of awards for his research\, including a National Science Foundation Young Investigator Award\, and a number of awards for his teaching\, including the Arthur F. Thurnau Professorship. He is married to Susanne Maria Krummel\; they have three children: Jasmine\, Ryan and Nicole.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CM Theory Seminar | Gate-Accessible Superconductivity and Helical Modes in Monolayer WTe_2
DESCRIPTION:Quantum materials research aims to uncover exotic physics and new approaches toward applied technologies. Two-dimensional crystals consisting of individual layers of van der Waals materials provide an exciting platform to study correlated and topological electronic states. These same crystals can be flexibly restacked into van der Waals heterostructures\, which enable clean interfaces between heterogeneous materials. Such heterostructures enable the isolation and protection of air sensitive 2D materials as well as provide new degrees of freedom for tailoring electronic structure and interactions. In this talk\, I will present experimental work studying electronic transport in monolayer WTe_2. First\, un-doped monolayer WTe_2 exhibits behaviors characteristic of a 2D topological insulator\, including edge mode transport approaching the quantum of conductance up to nearly 100 Kelvin. Second\, we have discovered that the same monolayers display superconductivity at low carrier densities accessible by local field-effect gating through a low-κ dielectric. The concurrence of electrostatically accessible superconductor and topological insulator phases in the same 2D crystal allows us to envision a new model of gate-configurable topological electronic devices. \n

SUMMARY:Other:Increasing Molecular Coverage in Complex Biological & Environmental Samples Using Ion Mobility-Mass Spectrometry
DESCRIPTION: \nMass spectrometry (MS)-based technologies are playing a growing role in the analysis of complex samples. Despite significant advances in MS technology\, currently it is difficult to obtain measurements of both high throughput and high sensitivity for samples with great dynamic ranges such as biofluids and plant extracts. This problem ultimately results in the inability to effectively account for variation among sample conditions and/or biodiversity leading to inconsequential findings for samples which have great variation. To address this challenge\, we have coupled an ion mobility separation (IMS) with MS to afford greatly improved measurement throughput\, sensitivity\, robustness\, and quantitative capabilities for rapid analysis of complex samples. The benefits we have observed in omic studies of biological and environmental samples with IMS-MS will be summarized in this presentation. \n \n \n \n \n \nErin Baker (NC State)

SUMMARY:Performance:The Ark's Student Welcome Show Terra Lightfoot
DESCRIPTION:Students: Welcome to Ann Arbor and to The Ark\, a world-class club with music for all ages and tastes! Canada’s Terra Lightfoot offers up something rare: the kind of genuine document that can only come from a road-tested breed of songwriter and performer. Shot through with the guitarist-vocalist’s powerful\, bluesy soul\, vivid lyrics and ferocious six-string virtuosity\, it’s an unforgettable outing. Terra’s stunning\, soulful voice powers her emotional wallops on her latest album \"New Mistakes\,\" laid low as a gentle whisper over the swirling finger-picking of “You Get High\,” or belted out with nuclear swagger over the rock ’n’ soul grooves of “Hold You\,” battling things out with a righteous Jake Clemons sax solo during its climax. And the only forces that can go toe-to-toe with Terra's vocal prowess are her guitar chops—and her fast-developing songwriting.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Applied Microeconomics/IO Seminar: Price discrimination against inattentive mortgage borrowers
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\n\nThe extent of price dispersion in the US residential mortgage market cannot be fully explained by dispersion in conventionally measured creditworthiness. Using a merged survey and administrative dataset with data on consumer search intensity\, I show that consumer failure to recall the interest rate is associated with paying a much higher rate. I estimate a structural model of sequential search in which recall/non-recall of the interest rate forms a consumer type known to firms. Price discrimination explains 90 percent of the interest rate penalty paid by the inattentive consumer type\, with differences in consumer preferences and search behavior explaining the remainder.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Statistics Department Seminar Series: Gongjun Xu\, Assistant Professor\, Department of Statistics\, University of Michigan
DESCRIPTION:Latent class models have wide applications in social and biological sciences. In many applications\, pre-specified restrictions are imposed on the parameter space of latent class models\, through a design matrix\, to reflect practitioners' diagnostic assumptions about how the observed responses depend on the respondents' latent traits. Though widely used in various fields\, such restricted latent class models suffer from nonidentifiability due to the models' discrete nature and complex restricted structure. This talk addresses the fundamental identifiability issue of restricted latent class models by developing a general framework for strict and partial identifiability of the model parameters. The developed identifiability conditions only depend on the design matrix and are easily checkable\, which provides useful practical guidelines for designing statistically valid diagnostic tests. Furthermore\, the new theoretical framework is applied to establish\, for the first time\, identifiability of several designs from cognitive diagnosis applications.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Things I Like Most About the Clements Library
DESCRIPTION:The Clements Library is a treasure house of American history. During a 23-year career with the Clements\, Brian Dunnigan has served as curator of maps\, head of research and publications\, associate director\, and acting director. Daily contact with the collections has inspired reflections on some of the things that the Clements does very well\, driving his exhibit themes around active collecting\, conservation\, solving mysteries\, and more. \n\nDunnigan’s selections include poignant manuscripts\, striking visual imagery and cartography\, and some of his favorite materials from the collections\, drawing especially from his expertise in the mapping of the Great Lakes. This valedictory exhibit in the Clements’s soaring Avenir Foundation Reading Room dwells on seven areas of commitment and illustrates the concepts with some of the Library's most evocative and handsome holdings.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:AE Dissertation Defense: \"Development and Application of a Comprehensive Simulation for Modeling Helicopter Ship Landing\"
DESCRIPTION:A comprehensive simulation framework for modeling helicopter ship landing was developed. The framework includes high-fidelity models for: 1) vehicle flight dynamics\, 2) Wind Over Deck (WOD)\, 3) ground effect\, 4) ship deck motion\, and 5) a robust flight control system.\n\nApproach simulations were performed to assess the influence of WOD and ground effect on the UH-60A helicopter response. The WOD velocities were obtained from Detached Eddy Simulation of flow over a SFS2 ship. A gain scheduled LQR controller was used to track the approach trajectory. The WOD resulted in high frequency oscillations in the CG position coordinates and attitude angles. Oblique WOD conditions required greater control effort than the headwind case. Ground effect\, modeled using a simple scaling factor\, caused an 11.3% decrease in rotor power consumption.\n\nA finite-state ground effect model was subsequently implemented to study the influence of inclined and moving decks. Hover and landing simulations were performed with a deck inclined at constant roll and pitch angles\, and a deck undergoing isolated sinusoidal motion. Static deck roll produced an increase in the lateral inflow coefficient and the longitudinal cyclic input to the main rotor. Power requirements were significantly affected by heaving deck motion\, highlighting the importance of modeling dynamic ground effect.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:When Debate\, Discourse\, and Exchange Go Bad: Bullying and Mobbing in the Academic Workplace
DESCRIPTION:Bullying is “rife” on campus. Academe is a “culture of cruelty”. Academics are “mean and nasty”. Really??? In this presentation\, we will test the veracity of these characterizations through an examination of the global research literature on bullying and mobbing in the academic workplace. Specifically\, we will explore the unique features of 1) academe (academic freedom\, shared governance) and the nature of the university as a “workplace” and 2) faculty as “ workers” as well as 3) the broader social\, political and economic context for how they shape the prevalence\, nature\, dynamics\, impact of\, and response to bullying and mobbing. Key insights include the status-based nature of bullying\, our colleagues\, the public\, and the state as powerful actors\, and the critical influence of culturally shaped behavioral norms in defining what is and is not bullying\, who should be involved in assessing and addressing bullying\, and some practical strategies for amelioration.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture: “Water” In and On the Surface of Terrestrial Planetary Bodies\, by Any Means
DESCRIPTION:Searching for life in the solar system has been a continuing quest for planetary scientists. Water is the elixir of life\, as we know\, and as such\, the central theme of space missions chasing after water in the solar system (e.g.\, Mars\, Europa\, Titan). \n\nOur home planet is unique in the inner solar system for the presence of liquid surface water. It is only ~30 years ago that the Earth’s mantle was discovered to contain one ocean-worth water stored as OH in nominally anhydrous minerals (e.g.\, olivine\, pyroxene). Despite these small relative abundances\, water in the Earth’s mantle plays dramatic roles in many geological processes\, from forming surface water through volcanic degassing to causing chemical and physical changes in the mantle. The search of water IN and ON the terrestrial bodies represents the logical extension of our knowledge of water on Earth. \n\nRecently\, our Moon has become the focus of such searches for water. The remote-sensed data has showed there is wide-spread “water” on the Moon (e.g.\, Pieters et al.\, 2009\; Colaprete et al.\, 2011). However\, it does not provide unambiguous ground-truth of water IN lunar soils. Toward this aspect\, my colleagues and I have examined several Apollo lunar soils. Our results provide evidence for the first identification of OH in lunar soils that were derived from both solar-wind and non-solar-wind sources (Liu et al.\, 2012a)\, versus H in lunar volcanic glass. Proving solar-wind-formed water on the Moon is important in searching for water on other airless bodies in the solar system. The on-going missions to Mercury and 4 Vesta have actually observed minor amounts of water on these airless bodies\, but are they similar to that on the Moon? \n\nMars\, on the other hand\, is the only other planet with clear signs of past/present liquid water. As such\, “follow the water” has been the central focus of NASA’s martian exploration program. However\, questions remain on when\, where\, and how water comes and goes on Mars. We recently recognized that impact melt pockets in martian meteorites record signatures of subsurface water\, and thus provide an unique if not only tool to examine subsurface water reservoirs on Mars (Chen et al.\, 2015\; Liu et al.\, 2018). \n\nHere\, I present results from my research on lunar and martian samples\, and discuss future directions toward searching for water on the inner solar system bodies.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Science Forum Demo: Counting Cells
DESCRIPTION:Join us in the Science Forum for 15-20 minute engaging science demonstrations that will help you see the world around you in a whole new way. Demonstrations are appropriate for visitors ages 5 and above. \n\nThe human body is made of more than 37 trillion cells. Most of them need to be replaced every couple of months\, weeks\, or sometimes in the course of only a few days. Our cells grow and divide constantly to get this massive job done. But how do cells replicate themselves? How do things move in\, out\, and around the cell\, and into new cells? Join us as we explore how our bodies carry out this massive process. We will learn about cell structure and division and observe cells up-close and in action! \nFunded by the National Science Foundation.
