DESCRIPTION:The Kevin E. Kennedy Memorial Fellowship Gala\, known as Gayla\, is the annual banquet for Outlaws\, the University of Michigan Law School's LGBTQ+ student group. The event will take place on Saturday\, February 18\, 2023 from 5:30-10 p.m. on the second floor of the Michigan League (911 N. University Ave.\, Ann Arbor\, MI 48109).\n\nNamed in honor of Kevin E. Kennedy ('89 LAW)\, an LGBTQ+ activist and lawyer\, the Gala is an opportunity for the broader UM and legal community to come together for an evening of celebration and remembrance. The event will feature a cocktail hour\, followed by a sit-down buffet dinner leading into the speaking program with remarks by Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel and other incredible guest speakers. The recipient of the 2023 Outlaws Public Interest Fellowship will also be recognized. After the speakers\, the dance floor will open up with tunes by DJ Batz. The evening will also feature a number of drag performances by local queen Chanel Hunter. Morris has used his work to engage in various  social conversations addressing themes of race\, spirituality\, history\, mental wellness and community. As a native  Detroiter\, Morris has always had a fondness for his hometown\, which is evident in his work. \n\nMorris’ artistic influence began to manifest at a very early age\, as he took found objects from around his home and  created new works. However\, his familial connections also informed his development. Grandmother\, Dell Pryor\, a  gallerist in the city of Detroit across four decades\, exposed James to many emerging and master artists. Some of those  names that ultimately influenced and inspired Morris include Adger Cowans\, Hugh Grannum\, Lester Sloan\, Al Loving\,  Gilda Snowden\, Shirley Woodson\, Anthony Barboza\, and Eric Pryor among others. \n\nIn 2008\, Morris founded Definitive Style Exclusive (DSE Detroit)\, a brand that uses an array of visual statements and  designs created with a simple yet blunt approach to touch on difficult and controversial topics within our society. \n\nIn 2019\, Morris began developing an artistic style that combines collage\, photo montage\, and abstract expressionism. DESCRIPTION:Sometimes\, the solutions to the climate crisis aren’t complex technological innovations. They can be as personal as your auntie’s renegade community kitchen that she built after a natural disaster\, or cooking with your dad\, who grew up poor\, and taught you how to be resourceful in the kitchen. It can be choosing to share moments of laughter with your loved ones in a time of hardship\, or sitting on the porch with your elders and learning from their stories of the past. Too often\, climate conversations ignore these narratives of community resourcefulness and creativity in times of adversity. \n\nThe Future Is With Our People brings together work from 10+ UM students who live\, work\, play\, love\, and hope in the face of uncertainties and injustices. Through these pieces\, the artists tell stories about the customs\, communities\, relationships\, and experiences that bring them joy and a drive to demand a better future. As the climate crisis intensifies\, we must recognize that solutions often lie within us\, our communities\, and our cultures. This art exhibit attempts to express just how vital our stories can be in building a sustainable and just future for present and future generations to thrive in.  \n\nJoin the Student Life Sustainabilty Cultural Organizers and the Center for Campus Involvement for an art exhibition on the first floor of the Union from Feb 13-Feb 24.

Since this time\, massive casualties\, human rights violations\, and an unprecedented refugee crisis have ensued. Women artists of Ukraine have responded. They paint on found materials in refugee housing\, illustrate in bomb shelters\, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document\, create\, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war\, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a “Revolution of Dignity” against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country’s independence resulting in Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine’s east.\n   \nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\n“— our love’s gone missing\, I explain to a friend/ it vanished in one of the wars/ we waged in our kitchen/ — change the word ‘war’ to ‘crisis\,’ he suggests/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.”\n   \nLike in Yakimchuk’s poem\, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine\, juxtapose\, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships\, the workings interior lives\, and perceptions of social roles. The featured artworks and documents engage a range of subjects from women volunteering as combatants to the processes of grieving and reflect ongoing discourses in Ukrainian feminist scholarship.

DESCRIPTION:What is feminism in Japan? Rather than imagining it as a singular\, coherent object\, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity\, difference\, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts\, “feminism” in Japan can invoke sharply different associations\, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority\, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters\, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families\, workplaces\, schools\, political institutions\, and laws\, among many other contexts. Many ­– but certainly not all – feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects\, working toward recognition\, repair\, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\n\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Created by nine contemporary artists in Japan and the United States\, the portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of \"feminism\" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences\, needs\, and activism within Japan. This exhibit also spotlights the history of Japanese studies at the University of Michigan in conjunction with the Center for Japanese Studies' 75th anniversary celebration. \n\n“Portraits of Feminism in Japan” is open for viewing M-F 9am-4pm or by appointment. They can be as personal as your auntie’s renegade community kitchen that she built after a natural disaster\, or cooking with your dad\, who grew up poor\, and taught you how to be resourceful in the kitchen. It can be choosing to share moments of laughter with your loved ones in a time of hardship\, or sitting on the porch with your elders and learning from their stories of the past. Too often\, climate conversations ignore these narratives of community resourcefulness and creativity in times of adversity. \n\nThe Future Is With Our People brings together work from 10+ UM students who live\, work\, play\, love\, and hope in the face of uncertainties and injustices. Through these pieces\, the artists tell stories about the customs\, communities\, relationships\, and experiences that bring them joy and a drive to demand a better future. As the climate crisis intensifies\, we must recognize that solutions often lie within us\, our communities\, and our cultures. DESCRIPTION:About the Exhibition\nNicole Marroquin is an interdisciplinary artist\, researcher\, and educator whose practice explores spatial justice and Latinx history. Deeply rooted in community\, she cultivates and reaffirms the human connections that ultimately sustain us. Her recent work explores the emergent themes of belonging as seen through the histories of student rebellions in Chicago public schools between 1968 and 1980.\n\nHer site-specific installation *With Care*\, created for the Institute for the Humanities Gallery\, presents the documentary photographs of influential Mexican-born artist\, teacher\, and friend Diana Solís in visual dialogue with Marroquin’s own creative work which includes ceramic sculptures and printmaking. Solís’s photography reflects over 25 years of transnational Chicana and lesbian organizing primarily in Chicago and Mexico City between 1975 and 1990. \n\nAbout the Artist\nNicole Marroquin is an interdisciplinary artist\, researcher\, and teacher educator whose work explores spatial justice and Latinx history. Marroquin works with youth and communities to decenter dominant narratives and to address displacement and erasure. Her essays are included in the Visual Art Research Journal\, Counter-Signals\, the Chicago Social Practice History Series\, Revista Contratiempo\, Where the Future Came From\, and Organize Your Own: The Politics and Poetics of Self-Determination Movements. Once on the Moon\, Larry observes how the Earth looks a lot like the Moon did from his porch back home.\n\nThe state-of-the-art Planetarium & Dome Theater at the U-M Museum of Natural History transports visitors beyond distant stars and back in time from the comfort of reclining seats. This collage-montage style has led Morris to create a series of figurative works\, that have engaged many within the  artistic community.

DESCRIPTION:Political Embarrassment and Partisan Cooperation\nMonday\, Feb. 20\, 2023 (3:30 PM – 5:00 PM)\n\nJennifer Wolak\nProfessor of Political Science\nMichigan State University\n\nIn a time of affective polarization and partisan division\, how can Americans be encouraged to cooperate with the opposing side? I consider how emotional reactions to politics motivate people to consider compromise. While negative emotions like anger can lead people to rally in support of their partisan side\, I argue that another negative emotion – embarrassment – can instead encourage people to think about politics in more principled ways. In recent years\, many Americans have said that politics makes them feel embarrassed. I show that these feelings of embarrassment can be a civic good\, encouraging people to move past their partisan commitments. As a reaction to a sense of violated social norms\, embarrassment affects how people think politics should be practiced. I draw on both experimental and survey evidence to demonstrate that when people feel embarrassed\, they are more likely to defend the democratic norm of compromise.\n\nDr. Jennifer Wolak is a professor of political science at Michigan State University. She studies how Americans understand politics and what motivates their political behavior. Much of her work focuses on political psychology\, including the effects of emotions on political decision-making and the effects of personality and socialization on the development of political attitudes. She is the author of Compromise in an Age of Party Polarization\, published by Oxford University Press in 2020.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student Combinatorics: Matroids\, Grassmannians\, and Dressians part II
DESCRIPTION:Matroids are combinatorial objects\, whose axioms attempt to capture possible independence relations among a finite set of vectors. It turns out that this is impossible to do. In fact\, as the size of the base set grows larger\, the probability that a matroid cannot be realized by a set of vectors approaches 1. We will review the definition of a matroid and talk about tropical Grassmannians and Dressians\, and their positive parts. We will conclude with the result that all positively oriented matroids are realizable (Ardila-Rincon-Williams\, 2017).

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Ann Arbor's First Orthodox Priest
DESCRIPTION:Who was the first Orthodox Priest of Ann Arbor\, and what can we learn from his life story today? This talk will follow the twists and turns in the life of Father Agathangelos\, the first Greek-Orthodox priest to serve the spiritual needs of Ann Arbor nearly a century ago\, and reflect on its broader meanings for Greek Orthodoxy in America. \n\nFather Agathangelos was born and raised in Ottoman Cappadocia (central Anatolia) at the end of the nineteenth century\, but his life was upended with the Greco-Turkish Population Exchange of 1923 (whose centennial we honor this year). The Exchange was at the time an unprecedented act of ethnic cleansing: The Republic of Turkey stripped nearly one and a half million indigenous Anatolian Christians of their citizenship and uprooted them to Greece\, which in turn stripped Greek citizenship from nearly half a million indigenous Muslims of Greece and uprooted them to Turkey. This Compulsory Exchange upended the lives of nearly two million souls and set an international precedent for partition and forced population movements in later decades.\n\nThis talk will follow the refugee life and migrations of Father Agathangelos -- who\, in addition to being a priest\, was also a poet\, a novelist\, and an iconographer -- through his artwork and the traces he left behind. His first and only fluent language was Turkish\, which he wrote in the Greek alphabet\, known as \"Karamanlidika Turkish.\" His poetry and his art reflect the rich cultural confluence of Anatolia before the Exchange\, and it was this culture that he carried with him into refugeehood and his later migration to the United States. What can his life tell us about the enumenical breadth and cultural riches of Greek Orthodoxy in America? You are all warmly invited to join in this lecture and to share your own perspectives in an open-forum Q&A afterward.\n\nWilliam Stroebel is an Assistant Professor of Modern Greek and Comparative Literature in the departments of Classical Studies and Comparative Literature at the University of Michigan. DESCRIPTION:An exhibit curated by Grace Mahoney and Jessica Zychowicz\nFeaturing work by Kinder Album\, JT Blatty\, Oksana Briukhovetska (MFA\, Stamps School of Art and Design)\, Oksana Kazmina\, Sonya Hukaylo\, Svetlana Lavochkina\, Kateryna Lisovenko\, and Lyuba Yakimchuk.\n   \nIn February 2022\, the world witnessed the invasion of Ukraine and all-out war of aggression by the Russian Federation. Since this time\, massive casualties\, human rights violations\, and an unprecedented refugee crisis have ensued. Women artists of Ukraine have responded. They paint on found materials in refugee housing\, illustrate in bomb shelters\, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document\, create\, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful\, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\n   \nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz\, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna)\, \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters\, photographers\, filmmakers\, poets\, translators\, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war\, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a “Revolution of Dignity” against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country’s independence resulting in Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine’s east.\n   \nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\n“— our love’s gone missing\, I explain to a friend/ it vanished in one of the wars/ we waged in our kitchen/ — change the word ‘war’ to ‘crisis\,’ he suggests/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.”\n   \nLike in Yakimchuk’s poem\, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine\, juxtapose\, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships\, the workings interior lives\, and perceptions of social roles. The featured artworks and documents engage a range of subjects from women volunteering as combatants to the processes of grieving and reflect ongoing discourses in Ukrainian feminist scholarship.

DESCRIPTION:An exhibition by James Charles Morris will be at Palmer Commons\, 4th Floor Atrium\, February 13 - March 10. \n\nAbout the Artist:\nJames Charles Morris (b. 1984)\, is a self-taught multidisciplinary artist\, who has engaged in the creative visual media  practices of photography\, collage\, painting\, and printmaking for 20 years. Morris has used his work to engage in various  social conversations addressing themes of race\, spirituality\, history\, mental wellness and community. As a native  Detroiter\, Morris has always had a fondness for his hometown\, which is evident in his work. \n\nMorris’ artistic influence began to manifest at a very early age\, as he took found objects from around his home and  created new works. However\, his familial connections also informed his development. Grandmother\, Dell Pryor\, a  gallerist in the city of Detroit across four decades\, exposed James to many emerging and master artists. Some of those  names that ultimately influenced and inspired Morris include Adger Cowans\, Hugh Grannum\, Lester Sloan\, Al Loving\,  Gilda Snowden\, Shirley Woodson\, Anthony Barboza\, and Eric Pryor among others. \n\nIn 2008\, Morris founded Definitive Style Exclusive (DSE Detroit)\, a brand that uses an array of visual statements and  designs created with a simple yet blunt approach to touch on difficult and controversial topics within our society. \n\nIn 2019\, Morris began developing an artistic style that combines collage\, photo montage\, and abstract expressionism.  This collage-montage style has led Morris to create a series of figurative works\, that have engaged many within the  artistic community.

DESCRIPTION:What is feminism in Japan? Rather than imagining it as a singular\, coherent object\, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity\, difference\, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts\, “feminism” in Japan can invoke sharply different associations\, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority\, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters\, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families\, workplaces\, schools\, political institutions\, and laws\, among many other contexts. Many ­– but certainly not all – feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects\, working toward recognition\, repair\, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\n\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Created by nine contemporary artists in Japan and the United States\, the portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of \"feminism\" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences\, needs\, and activism within Japan. It can be choosing to share moments of laughter with your loved ones in a time of hardship\, or sitting on the porch with your elders and learning from their stories of the past. Too often\, climate conversations ignore these narratives of community resourcefulness and creativity in times of adversity. \n\nThe Future Is With Our People brings together work from 10+ UM students who live\, work\, play\, love\, and hope in the face of uncertainties and injustices. Through these pieces\, the artists tell stories about the customs\, communities\, relationships\, and experiences that bring them joy and a drive to demand a better future. DESCRIPTION:About the Exhibition\nNicole Marroquin is an interdisciplinary artist\, researcher\, and educator whose practice explores spatial justice and Latinx history. Deeply rooted in community\, she cultivates and reaffirms the human connections that ultimately sustain us. Her recent work explores the emergent themes of belonging as seen through the histories of student rebellions in Chicago public schools between 1968 and 1980.\n\nHer site-specific installation *With Care*\, created for the Institute for the Humanities Gallery\, presents the documentary photographs of influential Mexican-born artist\, teacher\, and friend Diana Solís in visual dialogue with Marroquin’s own creative work which includes ceramic sculptures and printmaking. Solís’s photography reflects over 25 years of transnational Chicana and lesbian organizing primarily in Chicago and Mexico City between 1975 and 1990. \n\nAbout the Artist\nNicole Marroquin is an interdisciplinary artist\, researcher\, and teacher educator whose work explores spatial justice and Latinx history. Marroquin works with youth and communities to decenter dominant narratives and to address displacement and erasure. Her current work explores belonging through histories of student rebellions in Chicago Public Schools from 1968 to 1980. Through research and creative practice\, she aims to recover and re-present histories of Black and brown youth and women’s leadership in the struggle for justice in Chicago. \n\nMarroquin has presented her work at the Kochi Biennale\, the Annual Conference of the American Association of Research Librarians\, University of Maine\, New York Archivist Round Table\, Jane Addams Hull House Museum\, Northwestern University\, DePaul Museum of Art\, on WLPN Lumpen Radio\, Gallery 400\, Hyde Park Art Center and more. Her essays are included in the Visual Art Research Journal\, Counter-Signals\, the Chicago Social Practice History Series\, Revista Contratiempo\, Where the Future Came From\, and Organize Your Own: The Politics and Poetics of Self-Determination Movements. She has been an artist in residence at the Chicago Cultural Center supported by the Propeller Fund at Mana Contemporary\, at Watershed\, Ragdale\, ACRE\, Oxbow\, and was recently awarded the coveted USA Artist Fellowship\, recognizing the most compelling artists working and living in the United States today.

The works shown here from the holdings of the University of Michigan Library illuminate critical moments in the history of books. Grandmother\, Dell Pryor\, a  gallerist in the city of Detroit across four decades\, exposed James to many emerging and master artists. This seminar will be in-person and live-streaming on Zoom.\n\nVirtual Access: Please email eebsemaccess@umich.edu two hours prior to the event for the passcode.\n\nTALK TITLE: \nDeveloping frameworks for correlated character evolution in phylogenetic comparative modelling\n\nPREVIEW:\nThe astounding diversity of life is the result of billions of years of evolution. And while the results of evolutionary change are evident in the world around us\, the underlying processes that generated them are yet to be fully revealed. Hypotheses about how these processes play out over millions of years are often tested with phylogenetic comparative methods (PCMs). PCMs combine present-day observations with knowledge of how species are related to one another to test hypotheses of unobserved evolutionary change. However\, major methodological gaps exist both in terms of outstanding problems within current models and limitations to the types of datasets that are even analyzable. In this talk I will outline some of the challenges facing models of correlated character evolution and discuss some possible solutions. I will end the talk by discussing the potential for Artificial Intelligence to help understand the evolution of highly complex characters.

This talk argues that this fiscal weakness was fundamentally ideological in nature. Belief systems created through a confluence of traditional political ethics and the trauma of dynastic change imposed unusually deep and powerful constraints on fiscal policymaking and institutions throughout the final 250 years of China’s imperial history.\n   \n   Taisu Zhang is a Professor of Law at Yale Law School and works on comparative legal and economic history\, private law theory\, and contemporary Chinese law and politics. \"The Ideological Foundations of the Qing Fiscal State\,\" is his second book in a planned trilogy on the cultural and institutional origins of modern economic divergence.

DESCRIPTION:This lecture is about “autocratic ethno-federations” (AEs)\, countries under which more than half a billion people live. Fefer asks why AEs become more or less democratic\, hypothesizing that key to explaining these regime changes under AE are levels of centralization and ethnic inclusion. He corroborates this hypothesis by analyzing three twenty-first century regime changes in Ethiopia and concludes by connecting Ethiopia’s recent autocratization to the Tigray War.\n   \nAdam Fefer is a WCED visiting associate and political science Ph.D. candidate at the University of California\, San Diego. He holds an M.A. from UC San Diego and a B.A. from UC Berkeley. He studies authoritarianism\, federalism\, and ethnic conflict. His dissertation seeks to explain why authoritarian \"ethno-federations\" become more or less democratic\, focusing primarily on Ethiopia. Using comparative case studies and elite interview data\, Adam argues that changes to federal institutions—specifically\, their changing levels of centralization and ethnic inclusiveness—help explain changes in the democratic status of such authoritarian ethno-federations.\n\nThis lecture will be presented in person in 555 Weiser Hall and on Zoom. DESCRIPTION:In this presentation\, Sasha Senderovich will discuss his new book\, *How the Soviet Jew Was Made* (Harvard University Press\, 2022)\, which was named a finalist for the National Jewish Book Award. In the book\, Senderovich offers a close reading of postrevolutionary Russian and Yiddish literature and film that recast the Soviet Jew as a novel cultural figure: not just a minority but an ambivalent character navigating between the Jewish past and Bolshevik modernity.\n\nAfter the revolution of 1917\, Jews who had previously lived in the Russian Empire’s Pale of Settlement quickly exited the shtetls\, seeking prospects elsewhere. Some left for bigger cities in different parts of the new Bolshevik state\, others for Europe\, America\, or Palestine. Thousands tried their luck in the newly established Jewish Autonomous Region in the Far East\, where urban merchants would become tillers of the soil. For these Jews\, Soviet modernity meant freedom\, the possibility of the new\, and the pressure to discard old ways of life.\n\nThis ambivalence was embodied in the Soviet Jew—not just a descriptive demographic term but a novel cultural figure. In insightful readings of Yiddish and Russian literature\, films\, and reportage\, Senderovich finds characters traversing space and history and carrying with them the dislodged practices and archetypes of a lost Jewish world. DESCRIPTION:Abimbola A. Adelakun is an Assistant Professor in the Department of African/African Diaspora Studies at the University of Texas at Austin. She researches Pentecostalism\, performance\, religion and spirituality\, as they intersect with digital culture and teaches courses in spirituality and performance\, dramatic literature\, travels and African cosmopolitan identity\, and modern Nigerian culture. She is the author of Powerful Devices: The Politics and Praxis of Spiritual Warfare (Rutgers 2022). She obtained a PhD from the department of Theatre and Dance at the University of Texas at Austin\, along with a doctoral portfolio and Master’s degree from African and African Diaspora Studies at the University of Texas at Austin. She is also the author of Performing Power in Nigeria: Politics\, Identity\, and Pentecostalism (Cambridge 2021). She has also been published in The Drama Review and Journal of World Christianity. Since 2008\, Abimbola has been writing column for PUNCH Newspapers\, Nigeria’s most widely-read newspaper. Her popular column critically interrogates modern Nigerian political and social culture.

DESCRIPTION:\nLet us know how we can help! SPH is launching changes to its core curriculum in Fall 2023 and we are seeking your feedback on how we can best support student well-being inside the core curriculum and in allied student programming. \n\nJoin us for one of three one-hour focus groups to discuss challenges and potential solutions to student mental health and well-being. Each focus group is open to 10-12 participants and will be facilitated by UM's Wolverine Wellness. Responses from the focus group will be kept anonymous and shared (in summary format) with faculty and staff involved in building the core curriculum.\nFood will be provided. Open to all MPH students!

SUMMARY:Other:Light-driven Fuel Production mediated by Molecular Catalysts 
DESCRIPTION:Using solar photons to drive energy intensive reactions that take energy poor feedstocks like water and carbon dioxide into energy rich fuels represents an opportunity to capture and store diffuse solar energy. Molecular catalysts can selectively mediate the multi-electron\, multi-proton transformations that convert water and carbon dioxide into energy rich fuels but practical technologies that integrate these complexes with light absorbers have yet to be realized. To address the challenges limiting the development of solar fuel technologies\, my research lab is learning (1) how to exploit energy-efficient proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) processes for fuel production schemes and (2) how to integrate fuel-producing catalysts with photon capturing materials. DESCRIPTION:Complex cobordism is among the most important generalized cohomology theories that one encounters in homotopy theory. This is because of the deep connection between complex cobordism\, complex orientations\, and formal group laws. In this talk\, we will investigate the G-equivariant analogue of this story\, where G is some group. In particular\, we will calculate the complex cobordism ring of Z/2-manifolds\, and explain how this calculation leads to a new theory of \"filtered\" Z/2-equivariant formal group laws.

We will discuss these in the context of nonlinear wave equations and discuss applications to general relativity.
