The Great Chernobyl Acceleration: A Humanist’s Encounter with the Science of Disasters DESCRIPTION:In April 1986\, the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant exploded and sent upwards of 50 million curies into the surrounding environment. Working through archives\, Brown encountered many contradictory accounts of the disaster and its effects. Realizing that though people and archives lie\, trees probably don’t. She turned to scientists—biologists\, foresters\, physicians and physicists—to help her understand the ecology of the greater Chernobyl territories and the health effects that ensured. She learned working in the swampy territory around the blown plant that radioactive contaminants saturated local eco-systems long before the Chernobyl accident and continued after the 1986 event. Brown argues that to call Chernobyl an “accident” is to sweep aside the continuum of radiation exposure that saturated environments in the northern hemisphere in the second half of the 20th century. Instead of a one-off accident\, Brown argues that Chernobyl was a point of acceleration on a timeline of radioactive contamination that continues to this day.\n \nKate Brown is professor of history in the Department of Science\, Technology and Society at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She is the author of the prize-winning histories *Plutopia: Nuclear Families in Atomic Cities and the Great Soviet and American Plutonium Disasters* (Oxford 2013) and *A Biography of No Place: From Ethnic Borderland to Soviet Heartland* (Harvard 2004). She sees the first marks of black calligraphy as the hint of a language revealing bird wisdom hidden beneath successive layers of color. She paints the white layer last\, unifying all of the elements in the painting. Harold uses not only a brush\, but also fingers\, squeegee and oil sticks to capture the fleeting nature of birds. An ordained Unity minister\, Harold aims for this series to inspire the discovery of inner solutions to difficult issues that have so far eluded resolution by ordinary means. Prior to graduate school\, Emily worked as a Research Health Economist for RTI Health Solutions and received her BS in Industrial Engineering from NC State. \n\nGian-Gabriel Garcia is a PhD Candidate in the Industrial and Operations Engineering Department at the University of Michigan. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh and a Master’s degree in Industrial and Operations Engineering from the University of Michigan. In his research\, Gian is interested in developing data-driven frameworks using predictive and prescriptive analytics to address by high-impact problems in healthcare. Motivated by applications in concussion\, glaucoma\, and cardiovascular disease\, his current research focuses on (1) using large clinical datasets to gain patient-specific insights on disease progression and (2) combining these insights with stakeholders’ perspectives to improve diagnosis and treatment decisions. Upon completing his PhD\, Gian will spend one year as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Institute for Technology Assessment within Massachusetts General Hospital and the Harvard Medical School. She sees the first marks of black calligraphy as the hint of a language revealing bird wisdom hidden beneath successive layers of color. She paints the white layer last\, unifying all of the elements in the painting. Harold uses not only a brush\, but also fingers\, squeegee and oil sticks to capture the fleeting nature of birds. An ordained Unity minister\, Harold aims for this series to inspire the discovery of inner solutions to difficult issues that have so far eluded resolution by ordinary means. DESCRIPTION:Note: This event has been cancelled.\n\nAbstract: Have you ever wondered how males and females come to be different? Is it all cultural? Are the brains of females and males hardwired to be different? In this talk we will explore sex differences in brain and behavior and how the brain becomes individualized in female and males. We will see that during development\, genetics\, hormones\, and the environment all act on the brain to influence neuronal growth and connections. This can result in sex dependent development of the brain\, as an individual interacts with the environment during maturation. We will discuss what this means for the brain and for behavior of males and females during childhood\, adolescence and adulthood and the implications for cognitive function. Then\, we will consider sex differences in the motivation to take drugs of abuse and drug taking behavior. Sex differences in addiction are seen for all classes of abused drugs in humans and animal models. These sex differences in the neural mechanisms of addiction have implications for interventions and treatment that will be discussed.\n\nBio: Dr. Becker received her Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the Univ. of Illinois\, Urbana-Champaign. She is the Patricia Y. Gurin Collegiate Professor of Psychology\, Research Professor in the Molecular and Behavioral Neuroscience Institute\, and Senior Neuroscience Scholar\, University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor.
