DESCRIPTION:ACADEMIC KEYNOTE TITLE: Organic Reaction Development Meets Data Science\n\nABSTRACT: The optimization of catalytic reactions for organic synthesis is difficult as the interplay between the ligand\, reaction conditions\, and substrates involved is a complex multidimensional problem. In other words\, it is difficult to ascertain the pattern within the noise to offer a complete picture of how to optimize and/or interrupt why a certain set of conditions are required for a particular reaction. Therefore\, we have aimed to develop several data science-based tools that assist the rapid analysis of structure function relationships to reveal the underlying reasons for improved performance of substrates and catalysts. Specifically\, we have used new methods to develop descriptors for complex molecular architectures as well as data science methods to discern how these catalysts interact with a range of substrate types. This lecture will outline how we have put into practice a workflow that integrates data science tools\, physical organic chemistry\, and reaction optimization with a focus on new case studies in catalytic processes.

DESCRIPTION:Come explore the intricate and interlocking world of Sarah Buckius’ “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” where feminist art meets science and the history of invention. On view at Lane Hall as part of U-M Arts Initiative’s themed semester on Arts & Resistance\, “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” critiques the patriarchal paradigms of the STEM field by highlighting the history of women inventors. This exhibition brings conceptual invention in fine art and performance to the disciplines of information technology\, robotics\, and engineering. Buckius creates “technoffsprings”: complex machines that weave together the history of inventions related to the gendered labor of women\, especially regarding women’s social roles as caregivers and subjects of care themselves. \nTrained as an engineer and an artist\, Buckius’ machines are intentionally complex\, layered\, and illogical or absurdly logical. In the nature of women’s caregiving\, they teeter between order and chaos. Her “digital tinkerings” tell epic tales of motherhood\, technology\, female bodies\, and commerce—both personal and externalized through women’s inventions and early forays that bridged caregiving and commerce. Buckius' work proposes improvisation as a form of absurdist resistance to\, and alternative to\, patriarchal\, capitalist\, production-based\, and seemingly rational\, useful\, logical systems. \n“!!!techn010ffspring!!!” is open for viewing M-F\, 9am-4pm or by appointment. In the realm of biological macromolecules such as proteins and nucleic acids\, form determines function\, so visualizing the three-dimensional structures of molecules is key in researching the ‘tiny’ macromolecules that perform vital functions in our cells. In Biophysics 421\, under the guidance of Markos Koutmos\, Assistant Professor of Biophysics & Chemistry\, and Liz Tidwell\, PhD candidate in Biophysics\, students created models with digital modeling software and brought them to life via 3D printing. This exhibit showcases the 3D printed molecules\, scaled up to better reveal the structures that inform\, make\, break\, modify\, and move within the body.

DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

Clements Library\, edited by former library director John Dann. This exhibit—and its expanded online version—pairs items from 101 Treasures with related items that have for the most part been acquired since 1998. Those that were acquired earlier are items about which we’ve learned new things in the intervening 25 years.

The artwork is for sale and will be on display through September 1\, 2023.\n\nAccording to Sarah Unrath\, Curator and PCAP's Community Engagement Specialist\, “The exhibition is designed to connect viewers to artists through the wide gamut of their human experiences. We all have dreams\, memories\, goals\, pasts. We all process emotions of anger\, joy\, grief\, and nostalgia. We have specially selected works that show a culmination of ways artists in prison have navigated the complex realities of being human.”\n\nThe curatorial staff at PCAP worked closely with artists who were formerly incarcerated to select works that would fit the theme of this exhibition and be of interest to the broader audience. In the realm of biological macromolecules such as proteins and nucleic acids\, form determines function\, so visualizing the three-dimensional structures of molecules is key in researching the ‘tiny’ macromolecules that perform vital functions in our cells. In Biophysics 421\, under the guidance of Markos Koutmos\, Assistant Professor of Biophysics & Chemistry\, and Liz Tidwell\, PhD candidate in Biophysics\, students created models with digital modeling software and brought them to life via 3D printing. This exhibit showcases the 3D printed molecules\, scaled up to better reveal the structures that inform\, make\, break\, modify\, and move within the body.

DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

DESCRIPTION:The PMF Program will host a series of info sessions for graduate students who are interested in learning more about the PMF Program\, applying to the upcoming 2024 application\, and launching a career in the Federal Government. The PMF Program is the Federal Government’s premier leadership development program for advanced degree holders across all academic disciplines and from all segments of society. It is a two-year fellowship at a federal agency that is full-time with full salary and benefits\, leadership and technical development opportunities\, and it can lead to a permanent career in the Federal Government.\n\nThis session will be open toall academic disciplines. It will provide a general overview of the PMF Program\, initial details about the 2024 application cycle (expected to launch this September)\, and a Q&A Session.\n\nTo be eligible to apply to thePMF Program when the application launches this fall\, you should be goinginto the final year of your advanced degree program (expecting to complete all requirements by 8/31/2024)\, or you have finished your advanced degree in the two years prior to the application launch.\n\nThis session will NOT be recorded for later publishing or viewing\, and there will be a maximum capacity of 500 participants. From its inception\, the U-M Herbarium has cataloged and described plants—both poisonous and beneficial to human health—and still serves that role today. DESCRIPTION:Stop by the Student Showcase display in the museum’s main atrium\, behind the mastodons\, to see Molecules of Life.\n\nAugust 2023–July 2024\n\nMolecules of Life (Student Showcase)\nDiscover the connection between form and function as you explore the molecular building blocks of life. In the realm of biological macromolecules such as proteins and nucleic acids\, form determines function\, so visualizing the three-dimensional structures of molecules is key in researching the ‘tiny’ macromolecules that perform vital functions in our cells. In Biophysics 421\, under the guidance of Markos Koutmos\, Assistant Professor of Biophysics & Chemistry\, and Liz Tidwell\, PhD candidate in Biophysics\, students created models with digital modeling software and brought them to life via 3D printing. This exhibit showcases the 3D printed molecules\, scaled up to better reveal the structures that inform\, make\, break\, modify\, and move within the body.

DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

In the realm of biological macromolecules such as proteins and nucleic acids\, form determines function\, so visualizing the three-dimensional structures of molecules is key in researching the ‘tiny’ macromolecules that perform vital functions in our cells. In Biophysics 421\, under the guidance of Markos Koutmos\, Assistant Professor of Biophysics & Chemistry\, and Liz Tidwell\, PhD candidate in Biophysics\, students created models with digital modeling software and brought them to life via 3D printing. This exhibit showcases the 3D printed molecules\, scaled up to better reveal the structures that inform\, make\, break\, modify\, and move within the body.

DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

DESCRIPTION:Discover Delight in the Decadence\n \nIn this exhibition\, YehRim Lee positions colorful clay and metal sculptures on a complex structure of her own design to create a joyful\, immersive environment. Inspired by the fashion trend of the same name\, Dopamine Dressing leans into the idea that bright colors and surprising textures can create happiness by activating chemicals in the brain. Clothing designers used this concept to battle the doldrums of the pandemic and here\, artist YehRim Lee asks visitors to see how vibrancy\, materiality\, and expressive movement in art can have the same effect. \n \nShe repeatedly refires her clay sculptures\, introducing a new glaze each time until the surfaces begin to warp and crack\, approaching collapse\, suggesting that the dopamine bursts that come from sensual pleasure or excessive consumption perhaps provide only temporary relief from the cares of the world.\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the William C. Weese\, M.D. Endowment for Ceramic Arts\, the U–M Office of the Provost\, and the Nam Center for Korean Studies. DESCRIPTION:Our dear friend Laura Jean Hoffman\, assistant dean for admissions\, passed away suddenly on Thursday\, May 25\, 2023.\n\nAll are invited to join the SMTD community for a Memorial Service and Reception in celebration of Laura’s life and achievements.\n\nLaura’s legacy will be felt for generations. She began her tenure in the Office of Admissions at what was then the School of Music in 1983. In her 40 years of service\, she helped thousands of students and their families through the admissions process\, and\, through her work\, helped to shape our school in a powerfully positive way. She was a national leader in the admissions field\, and an ardent champion of SMTD\, the University of Michigan\, and the performing arts. She was admired and beloved by her colleagues here and around the nation and will be so very missed by all who knew her.

Hear Me Now centers around the complicated history and continuing legacy of an African American ceramic tradition that emerged out of the plantation economies of Edgefield\, South Carolina. As an artistic tradition rooted in the history of American slavery\, the exhibition highlights the tangled histories of race\, slavery and art in this country. The exhibition features historic work including monumental storage jars by the enslaved and literate potter and poet Dave\, later recorded as David Drake as well as leading contemporary Black artists who have responded to or whose practice resonates with the Edgefield story. Established figures like Theaster Gates and Simone Leigh\, as well as younger\, emerging artists like Adebunmi Gbadebo\, Woody De Othello\, and Robert Pruitt\, have contributed to the show. DESCRIPTION:The documents in this exhibit were declassified and made public as a result of years of research and FOIA advocacy by those promoting openness\, particularly members of the National Security Archive. DESCRIPTION:Come explore the intricate and interlocking world of Sarah Buckius’ “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” where feminist art meets science and the history of invention. On view at Lane Hall as part of U-M Arts Initiative’s themed semester on Arts & Resistance\, “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” critiques the patriarchal paradigms of the STEM field by highlighting the history of women inventors. This exhibition brings conceptual invention in fine art and performance to the disciplines of information technology\, robotics\, and engineering. Buckius creates “technoffsprings”: complex machines that weave together the history of inventions related to the gendered labor of women\, especially regarding women’s social roles as caregivers and subjects of care themselves. \nTrained as an engineer and an artist\, Buckius’ machines are intentionally complex\, layered\, and illogical or absurdly logical. In the nature of women’s caregiving\, they teeter between order and chaos. Her “digital tinkerings” tell epic tales of motherhood\, technology\, female bodies\, and commerce—both personal and externalized through women’s inventions and early forays that bridged caregiving and commerce. Buckius' work proposes improvisation as a form of absurdist resistance to\, and alternative to\, patriarchal\, capitalist\, production-based\, and seemingly rational\, useful\, logical systems. \n“!!!techn010ffspring!!!” is open for viewing M-F\, 9am-4pm or by appointment. DESCRIPTION:Beginning Friday\, August 11th\, the exhibit Shared Humanity will be featured at the Greater Flint Arts Council from the Prison Creative Arts Project’s (PCAP) private collection. The artwork is for sale and will be on display through September 1\, 2023.\n\nAccording to Sarah Unrath\, Curator and PCAP's Community Engagement Specialist\, “The exhibition is designed to connect viewers to artists through the wide gamut of their human experiences. We all have dreams\, memories\, goals\, pasts. We all process emotions of anger\, joy\, grief\, and nostalgia. We have specially selected works that show a culmination of ways artists in prison have navigated the complex realities of being human.”\n\nThe curatorial staff at PCAP worked closely with artists who were formerly incarcerated to select works that would fit the theme of this exhibition and be of interest to the broader audience. Visitors will see works from familiar artists\, including Andy Wynkoop\, An ArtsyGuy\, RIK\, Roger (Free-Hand) Stephenson\, and many others.\n\n“This exhibition centralizes intersecting themes and multi-faceted layers of what it means to be human. Our hope is to challenge the lens through which the exhibit audience looks at people in prison. Coming out of a season that has worn us thin of human connection\, this exhibit presents a unique opportunity to engage in powerful dialogue inspired by the art in Shared Humanity\,” says Unrath\n\nAdmission is free and open to the public.

DESCRIPTION:Stop by the Student Showcase display in the museum’s main atrium\, behind the mastodons\, to see Molecules of Life.\n\nAugust 2023–July 2024\n\nMolecules of Life (Student Showcase)\nDiscover the connection between form and function as you explore the molecular building blocks of life. In the realm of biological macromolecules such as proteins and nucleic acids\, form determines function\, so visualizing the three-dimensional structures of molecules is key in researching the ‘tiny’ macromolecules that perform vital functions in our cells. In Biophysics 421\, under the guidance of Markos Koutmos\, Assistant Professor of Biophysics & Chemistry\, and Liz Tidwell\, PhD candidate in Biophysics\, students created models with digital modeling software and brought them to life via 3D printing. This exhibit showcases the 3D printed molecules\, scaled up to better reveal the structures that inform\, make\, break\, modify\, and move within the body.

DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

DESCRIPTION:As we celebrate the library’s centennial\, this exhibit is an attempt to answer a question asked often by visitors\, how do you decide what to acquire to add to your collections.\n\nIt builds on the landmark publication of the library’s 75th anniversary\, One Hundred and One Treasures From the Collections of the William L. Clements Library\, edited by former library director John Dann. This exhibit—and its expanded online version—pairs items from 101 Treasures with related items that have for the most part been acquired since 1998. Those that were acquired earlier are items about which we’ve learned new things in the intervening 25 years.

This series will elucidate the implications of psychological diversity across the globe for policies in international relations\, politics\, economics\, business\, immigration\, and other relevant domains.\n\nIn person: ISR Thompson 1430\n\nAbout the Group Dynamics Seminar Series:\nThe Group Dynamics Seminar series is considered one of the longest running seminar series in the social sciences. DESCRIPTION:The documents in this exhibit were declassified and made public as a result of years of research and FOIA advocacy by those promoting openness\, particularly members of the National Security Archive. DESCRIPTION:Come explore the intricate and interlocking world of Sarah Buckius’ “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” where feminist art meets science and the history of invention. On view at Lane Hall as part of U-M Arts Initiative’s themed semester on Arts & Resistance\, “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” critiques the patriarchal paradigms of the STEM field by highlighting the history of women inventors. This exhibition brings conceptual invention in fine art and performance to the disciplines of information technology\, robotics\, and engineering. Buckius creates “technoffsprings”: complex machines that weave together the history of inventions related to the gendered labor of women\, especially regarding women’s social roles as caregivers and subjects of care themselves. \nTrained as an engineer and an artist\, Buckius’ machines are intentionally complex\, layered\, and illogical or absurdly logical. In the nature of women’s caregiving\, they teeter between order and chaos. Her “digital tinkerings” tell epic tales of motherhood\, technology\, female bodies\, and commerce—both personal and externalized through women’s inventions and early forays that bridged caregiving and commerce. Buckius' work proposes improvisation as a form of absurdist resistance to\, and alternative to\, patriarchal\, capitalist\, production-based\, and seemingly rational\, useful\, logical systems. \n“!!!techn010ffspring!!!” is open for viewing M-F\, 9am-4pm or by appointment. DESCRIPTION:Beginning Friday\, August 11th\, the exhibit Shared Humanity will be featured at the Greater Flint Arts Council from the Prison Creative Arts Project’s (PCAP) private collection. The artwork is for sale and will be on display through September 1\, 2023.\n\nAccording to Sarah Unrath\, Curator and PCAP's Community Engagement Specialist\, “The exhibition is designed to connect viewers to artists through the wide gamut of their human experiences. We all have dreams\, memories\, goals\, pasts. We all process emotions of anger\, joy\, grief\, and nostalgia. We have specially selected works that show a culmination of ways artists in prison have navigated the complex realities of being human.”\n\nThe curatorial staff at PCAP worked closely with artists who were formerly incarcerated to select works that would fit the theme of this exhibition and be of interest to the broader audience. Visitors will see works from familiar artists\, including Andy Wynkoop\, An ArtsyGuy\, RIK\, Roger (Free-Hand) Stephenson\, and many others.\n\n“This exhibition centralizes intersecting themes and multi-faceted layers of what it means to be human. Our hope is to challenge the lens through which the exhibit audience looks at people in prison. Coming out of a season that has worn us thin of human connection\, this exhibit presents a unique opportunity to engage in powerful dialogue inspired by the art in Shared Humanity\,” says Unrath\n\nAdmission is free and open to the public.

In Biophysics 421\, under the guidance of Markos Koutmos\, Assistant Professor of Biophysics & Chemistry\, and Liz Tidwell\, PhD candidate in Biophysics\, students created models with digital modeling software and brought them to life via 3D printing. This exhibit showcases the 3D printed molecules\, scaled up to better reveal the structures that inform\, make\, break\, modify\, and move within the body.

DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

The PMF Program is the Federal Government’s premier leadership development program for advanced degree holders across all academic disciplines and from all segments of society. It is a two-year fellowship at a Federal agency that is full-time\,with full salary and benefits\, leadership and technical development opportunities\, and which can lead to a permanent career in the Federal Government.\n\nThis session will be open to all academic disciplines and will have a specific focus on STEM and Science Policy fields. This info session will provide a general overview of the PMF Program\, initial details about the 2024 application cycle (expected to launch in the fall)\, and an opportunity to hear from current and former PMFs (with backgrounds in STEM/Science Policy) across government about their unique experiences in the program. DESCRIPTION:The 20th century has witnessed the rise of quantum mechanics and its fueled scientific and technological revolution. The humankind is now on the verge of a second quantum revolution sparked by quantum information science and engineering (QISE). Entanglement as a quintessential quantum resource lies at the heart of QISE\, giving rise to a plethora of quantum-enabled or enhanced capabilities that shift the landscape of communication\, sensing\, and computing. In this talk\, I will present our recent experimental advances in entanglement-enhanced sensing and data processing. I will first describe entangled sensor networks for precise radiofrequency and optomechanical sensing beyond the standard quantum limit. Building on entangled sensors\, I will introduce quantum-enhanced machine learning for data classification at a physical layer. Next\, I will discuss a major endeavor to foster the transition from basic quantum research to near-term\, widely impactful real-world quantum technologies: the construction of a quantum network testbed as a distributed infrastructure to advance convergent QISE research and education.\n\nBiographical sketch: Dr. Zheshen Zhang is an Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at University of Michigan–Ann Arbor. Prior to joining University of Michigan\, Dr. Zhang was an Assistant Professor at University of Arizona from 2017 to 2022\, a Research Scientist\, and a Postdoctoral Associate both at MIT from 2012 to 2017. Dr. Zhang received his PhD degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Georgia Tech. Dr. Zhang's research encompasses a broad spectrum of quantum networks\, quantum communications\, quantum sensing\, and quantum computing. His team harnesses unique quantum resources such as entanglement to develop quantum sensors surpassing the classical measurement limits\, quantum communication systems with enhanced security and capacity\, quantum networks for long-range entanglement distribution\, and quantum processors capable of tackling problems intractable on classical computers. His work was recognized by an NSF CAREER Award in 2022. Dr. Zhang currently serves on the Editorial Board of Communications Physics of Nature Portfolio and Progress in Quantum Electronics of Elsevier.

DESCRIPTION:The documents in this exhibit were declassified and made public as a result of years of research and FOIA advocacy by those promoting openness\, particularly members of the National Security Archive. In the wake of the historic arrest in London of General Pinochet in October 1998\, their efforts\, among others\, led President Bill Clinton to launch a special Chile Declassification Project in 1999 and the eventual release of over 24\,000 formerly top secret documents.\n\nCurated by Peter Kornbluh (Director of the Chile Documentation Project at the National Security Archive\, an NGO dedicated to freedom of information and transparency)\, this exhibit was co-designed by Eimeel Castillo (Ph.D. Candidate in History and Women’s and Gender Studies) and Victoria Langland (Associate Professor of History).\n\nCosponsors: University of Michigan [Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies\; International Institute\; College of Literature\, Science\, and the Arts\; Office of Research\; Department of History\; Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies\; Museum Studies Program\; Institute for the Humanities] and Interfaith Council for Peace & Justice

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Sarah Buckius: !!!techn010ffspring!!!
DESCRIPTION:Come explore the intricate and interlocking world of Sarah Buckius’ “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” where feminist art meets science and the history of invention. On view at Lane Hall as part of U-M Arts Initiative’s themed semester on Arts & Resistance\, “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” critiques the patriarchal paradigms of the STEM field by highlighting the history of women inventors. This exhibition brings conceptual invention in fine art and performance to the disciplines of information technology\, robotics\, and engineering. Buckius creates “technoffsprings”: complex machines that weave together the history of inventions related to the gendered labor of women\, especially regarding women’s social roles as caregivers and subjects of care themselves. \nTrained as an engineer and an artist\, Buckius’ machines are intentionally complex\, layered\, and illogical or absurdly logical. In the nature of women’s caregiving\, they teeter between order and chaos. Her “digital tinkerings” tell epic tales of motherhood\, technology\, female bodies\, and commerce—both personal and externalized through women’s inventions and early forays that bridged caregiving and commerce. Buckius' work proposes improvisation as a form of absurdist resistance to\, and alternative to\, patriarchal\, capitalist\, production-based\, and seemingly rational\, useful\, logical systems. \n“!!!techn010ffspring!!!” is open for viewing M-F\, 9am-4pm or by appointment. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Shared Humanity
DESCRIPTION:Beginning Friday\, August 11th\, the exhibit Shared Humanity will be featured at the Greater Flint Arts Council from the Prison Creative Arts Project’s (PCAP) private collection. The artwork is for sale and will be on display through September 1\, 2023.\n\nAccording to Sarah Unrath\, Curator and PCAP's Community Engagement Specialist\, “The exhibition is designed to connect viewers to artists through the wide gamut of their human experiences. We all have dreams\, memories\, goals\, pasts. We all process emotions of anger\, joy\, grief\, and nostalgia. We have specially selected works that show a culmination of ways artists in prison have navigated the complex realities of being human.”\n\nThe curatorial staff at PCAP worked closely with artists who were formerly incarcerated to select works that would fit the theme of this exhibition and be of interest to the broader audience. Visitors will see works from familiar artists\, including Andy Wynkoop\, An ArtsyGuy\, RIK\, Roger (Free-Hand) Stephenson\, and many others.\n\n“This exhibition centralizes intersecting themes and multi-faceted layers of what it means to be human. Our hope is to challenge the lens through which the exhibit audience looks at people in prison. Coming out of a season that has worn us thin of human connection\, this exhibit presents a unique opportunity to engage in powerful dialogue inspired by the art in Shared Humanity\,” says Unrath\n\nAdmission is free and open to the public.

DESCRIPTION:Stop by the Collections Case display in the museum’s main atrium\, behind the mastodons\, to see Nature’s Pharmacy.\n\nAugust 2023–July 2024\n\nPlants and fungi play a vital role in medicine due to the diversity of chemical defense mechanisms they evolved to safeguard them against pathogens\, herbivores\, and competitors. From its inception\, the U-M Herbarium has cataloged and described plants—both poisonous and beneficial to human health—and still serves that role today. See specimens of these plant and fungal “friends” and “foes” from the U-M Herbarium collection and learn about how the collection is used for drug discovery today.
