SUMMARY:Auditions:GREAT COMET AUDITIONS
DESCRIPTION:Submit a virtual audition for \"NATASHA\, PIERRE\, & THE GREAT COMET OF 1812\"! Join us as we put on this modern classic! Help us to transform this piece and amplify LGBTQIA+ stories and storytellers as we highlight the Queer themes of this masterpiece!\n\nAudition forms and videos are due by Sunday\, September 10. Callbacks will be held Tuesday\, September 12 and Wednesday\, September 13. Our performances will be December 1-3 in the Arthur Miller Theatre!\n\nFor more information\, check out our LinkTree!\n\nFrom the celebrated and award-winning composer Dave Malloy comes Natasha\, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812\, an electropop opera based on a scandalous slice of Leo Tolstoy’s War and Peace. Young and impulsive\, Natasha Rostova arrives in Moscow to await the return of her fiancé from the front lines. When she falls under the spell of the roguish Anatole\, it is up to Pierre\, a family friend in the middle of an existential crisis\, to pick up the pieces of her shattered reputation. Following a critically exalted premiere at Ars Nova in New York City\, a subsequent Off-Broadway transfer\, and an acclaimed run on Broadway\, this award-winning musical expands the possibilities for the genre with its daring score and bold storytelling.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Illustrating the Renaissance Book: From Illumination to Woodcut
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a selection of manuscripts and early printed books from the 15th to the 17th centuries that were illustrated with illuminations and woodcuts. Throughout the European Renaissance (1300-1700)\, many book illustrations were exclusively ornamental\, while others focused on enhancing the meaning of the text. However\, as the pages on display attest\, all these illustrations share a common ground: they reveal the aesthetic and intellectual fashions first proposed by Italian artists of the 1400s\, who were strongly committed to the recovery of the past of classical antiquity.\n\nThe word “Illumination\,” from the Latin illuminare\, “to enlighten or to illuminate\,” refers to the embellishment of a manuscript or early printed book with luminous colors\, notably gold and silver. This illumination was prominent in the frontispiece\, or first page of text\, which included the decoration of its borders and initial letter\, and even miniatures\, that is\, scenes with an independent narrative. With the introduction of movable-type printing in 1454\, these illuminations would be gradually replaced by woodcuts\, which were printed from a woodblock that had been cut by knife along the grain of the wood.\n\nAvailable during Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours (https://myumi.ch/2m7d4).\n\nJoin us on September 13 for a talk by Pablo Alvarez\, curator of the exhibit.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Featured Exhibits
DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

DESCRIPTION:Stop by the Collections Case display in the museum’s main atrium\, behind the mastodons\, to see Nature’s Pharmacy.\n\nAugust 2023–July 2024\n\nPlants and fungi play a vital role in medicine due to the diversity of chemical defense mechanisms they evolved to safeguard them against pathogens\, herbivores\, and competitors. From its inception\, the U-M Herbarium has cataloged and described plants—both poisonous and beneficial to human health—and still serves that role today. See specimens of these plant and fungal “friends” and “foes” from the U-M Herbarium collection and learn about how the collection is used for drug discovery today.

DESCRIPTION:Stop by the Student Showcase display in the museum’s main atrium\, behind the mastodons\, to see Molecules of Life.\n\nAugust 2023–July 2024\n\nMolecules of Life (Student Showcase)\nDiscover the connection between form and function as you explore the molecular building blocks of life. In the realm of biological macromolecules such as proteins and nucleic acids\, form determines function\, so visualizing the three-dimensional structures of molecules is key in researching the ‘tiny’ macromolecules that perform vital functions in our cells. In Biophysics 421\, under the guidance of Markos Koutmos\, Assistant Professor of Biophysics & Chemistry\, and Liz Tidwell\, PhD candidate in Biophysics\, students created models with digital modeling software and brought them to life via 3D printing. This exhibit showcases the 3D printed molecules\, scaled up to better reveal the structures that inform\, make\, break\, modify\, and move within the body.

SUMMARY:Performance:Snarky Puppy
DESCRIPTION:Performing songs from their 2023 Grammy-winning Empire Central\, the genre-defying super-band Snarky Puppy returns to Ann Arbor for its third UMS appearance and its first since 2019.\n\nEmpire Central is an homage to Dallas\, with many of its songs inspired by the collective’s time in the city. And like the city\, the eclectic 19-piece electric ensemble is big and bold\, chill and laid back\, rooted in its native culture while reaching forward. Led by Michael League on bass\, Snarky Puppy was formed in 2004 by 10 friends who were enrolled in the jazz program at the University of North Texas. With 13 albums in 18 years that have garnered four Grammy Awards\, Snarky Puppy has attracted international fandom for its detailed arrangements of fetching melodies\, texturally layered harmonies\, exciting solos\, ear-candy synth effects\, and propulsive beats. Its distinctly Southwestern influences — blues\, hard rock\, classic soul\, modern gospel\, percolating funk\, new tech\, fusion\, and jazz — never sound derivative but conjure music that’s fresh and original.

SUMMARY:Performance:The Bones of J.R. Jones
DESCRIPTION:Moody and ominous new music\n\n“There was no ‘a-ha’ moment\,” says Jonathon Linaberry\, “no life-changing revelation\, no singular flash of inspiration. It was just a fierce\, steady\, undeniable energy\, a force of nature I had to wrestle and wrangle with for years until I could harness it.” It’s easy to understand\, then\, why Linaberry—better known as The Bones Of J.R. Jones—would call his mesmerizing new album \"Slow Lightning.\" As its title suggests\, the collection is raw and visceral\, pulsating with an understated electrical current that flows just beneath its seemingly placid surface. The songs are restless and unsettled here\, often grappling with doubt and desire in the face of nature and fate\, and frequent collaborator Kiyoshi Matsuyama’s production is eerily hypnotic to match\, with haunting synthesizers\, vintage drum machines\, and ghostly guitars fleshing out Linaberry’s already-cinematic brand of roots noir. The result is a moody\, ominous work that’s equal parts Southern Gothic and transcendent meditation\, an instinctual slice of piercing self-reflection that hints at everything from Bruce Springsteen and Bon Iver to James Murphy and J.J. Cale as it searches for meaning and purpose in a world without easy answers. “I felt very lost at the time I was writing these songs\,” Linaberry confesses. “It was a moment of deep crisis and anxiety\, but I knew the only way out was through\, which meant I just had to bring myself to the table every day and put in the work.”\n\nPlease visit https://mutotix.umich.edu/4225/4226 for more detail.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Other 9-11: Reflections on the Anniversary of the 1973 Coup in Chile. “Secrets of State: The Declassified History of the Chilean Dictatorship” Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:The documents in this exhibit were declassified and made public as a result of years of research and FOIA advocacy by those promoting openness\, particularly members of the National Security Archive. In the wake of the historic arrest in London of General Pinochet in October 1998\, their efforts\, among others\, led President Bill Clinton to launch a special Chile Declassification Project in 1999 and the eventual release of over 24\,000 formerly top secret documents.\n\nCurated by Peter Kornbluh (Director of the Chile Documentation Project at the National Security Archive\, an NGO dedicated to freedom of information and transparency)\, this exhibit was co-designed by Eimeel Castillo (Ph.D. Candidate in History and Women’s and Gender Studies) and Victoria Langland (Associate Professor of History).\n\nCosponsors: University of Michigan [Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies\; International Institute\; College of Literature\, Science\, and the Arts\; Office of Research\; Department of History\; Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies\; Museum Studies Program\; Institute for the Humanities] and Interfaith Council for Peace & Justice

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Sarah Buckius: !!!techn010ffspring!!!
DESCRIPTION:Come explore the intricate and interlocking world of Sarah Buckius’ “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” where feminist art meets science and the history of invention. On view at Lane Hall as part of U-M Arts Initiative’s themed semester on Arts & Resistance\, “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” critiques the patriarchal paradigms of the STEM field by highlighting the history of women inventors. This exhibition brings conceptual invention in fine art and performance to the disciplines of information technology\, robotics\, and engineering. Buckius creates “technoffsprings”: complex machines that weave together the history of inventions related to the gendered labor of women\, especially regarding women’s social roles as caregivers and subjects of care themselves. \nTrained as an engineer and an artist\, Buckius’ machines are intentionally complex\, layered\, and illogical or absurdly logical. In the nature of women’s caregiving\, they teeter between order and chaos. Her “digital tinkerings” tell epic tales of motherhood\, technology\, female bodies\, and commerce—both personal and externalized through women’s inventions and early forays that bridged caregiving and commerce. Buckius' work proposes improvisation as a form of absurdist resistance to\, and alternative to\, patriarchal\, capitalist\, production-based\, and seemingly rational\, useful\, logical systems. \n“!!!techn010ffspring!!!” is open for viewing M-F\, 9am-4pm or by appointment. University of Michigan instructors can email LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu to request a group tour or schedule a class visit.\nThis project was made possible by a grant from the Arts Initiative at the University of Michigan and co-sponsored by U-M’s Department of Women’s and Gender Studies and the Institute for Research on Women and Gender with support from the Santa Cruz County Arts Council.

SUMMARY:Tours:Building on a Century of Collecting at the Clements Library
DESCRIPTION:As we celebrate the library’s centennial\, this exhibit is an attempt to answer a question asked often by visitors\, how do you decide what to acquire to add to your collections.\n\nIt builds on the landmark publication of the library’s 75th anniversary\, One Hundred and One Treasures From the Collections of the William L. Clements Library\, edited by former library director John Dann. This exhibit—and its expanded online version—pairs items from 101 Treasures with related items that have for the most part been acquired since 1998. Those that were acquired earlier are items about which we’ve learned new things in the intervening 25 years.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CMENAS Fall 2023 Colloquium Series Lecture. Scoring Points: Sports and Politics in Iran
DESCRIPTION:In the face of a worsening economy as well as a range of restrictions and pressures from the Iranian state\, Iranian athletes–including many women–have managed significant achievements on the national and world stage. Yet what may otherwise be triumphant moments for the athletes and the nation are marred by Iran’s domestic and international troubles. More often than not\, Iranian athletes find themselves increasingly caught between the rock of an authoritarian state and the hard place of diasporic and foreign agendas which compete to use Iranian sports to further their own interests. Drawing from several recent examples to illustrate these dynamics\, this talk also considers why frameworks used for making sense of sports\, media\, and politics elsewhere in the region may not be as fruitful for understanding the case of Iran. In spite of the grim realities facing Iranian athletes\, however\, Iranian sports remains an important vehicle for individual expression and social change\, and the talk includes a discussion of such positive potentials and accomplishments as well.\n\nNiki Akhavan is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Media and Communication Studies at the Catholic University of America. She is the author of *Electronic Iran: The Politics of an Online Evolution *(Rutgers\, 2013) and has also published on Iranian narrative and documentary cinema\, Iranian sports and media\, as well as on state media productions and policies. In addition to her research\, Akhavan is an avid translator\, most recently of Mohsen Kadivar's *Human rights and reformist Islam *(Edinburgh University Press\, 2021).\n\nThis event is part of the CMENAS Fall Colloquium 2023: “The MENA world after a MENA World Cup” 555 Weiser Hall\, 500 Church Street\, Ann Arbor.\n\nColloquium questions: cmenas@umich.edu\n\nThis series is funded in part by the Center for Middle Eastern and North African Studies (CMENAS) U.S. Department of Education Title VI National Resource Center (NRC) grant.\n\nTo register\, go to https://myumi.ch/8eA8n.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:HEP-Astro Seminar | The Phantom Menace: Modified Gravity as an Alternative to the Planet Nine Hypothesis
DESCRIPTION:We study the dynamics of outer solar system bodies under the influence of the modified gravity theory MOND. We find that tidal forces due to the Galaxy (which are much stronger in MOND than in Newtonian gravity) tend to align the major axes of the orbits of outer Kuiper belt objects with the direction towards the center of the galaxy. Such an alignment is seen in the orbits of the handful of outer Kuiper belt objects that are known at present. The observed alignment has previously led to the Planet Nine hypothesis: that there is a large undiscovered planet in the outer solar system. It is expected that in the near future surveys dedicated to the outer solar system as well as Dark Energy Survey\, the Vera Rubin Telescope and CMB-S4 will discover many more outer Kuiper belt objects and settle the question of whether the observed alignment is due to Planet Nine\, modified gravity or merely due to an observational bias of the existing surveys. MOND gravity deviates from Newtonian gravity when the field is weak. It was originally developed to account for galaxy rotation curves without invoking dark matter. Thus the Kuiper belt\, which is a subject of great intrinsic interest\, may also prove a laboratory for studying fundamental physics. \n\nReference - Kate Brown and Harsh Mathur\, arXiv:2304.00576\; to be published in the Astronomical Journal

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:RCGD Fall Seminar Series: Psychological Diversity across the Globe (Shinobu Kitayama)
DESCRIPTION:In the past three decades\, cultural psychologists have shown how culture shapes cognitive\, emotional\, and motivational processes\, making it a crucial factor in understanding human behavior. While much of this work has focused on comparing Western European and East Asian heritages\, there is a growing need to empirically examine other cultures and uncover new insights into how culture influences the mind. In this talk\, I will examine the influence of ecology and geography on human activity\, leading to the formation of organized systems of cultural practices and meanings known as \"ecocultural complexes.\" These complexes have given rise to diverse cultural zones we observe today. Outside of the modern West\, most cultural zones emphasize an interdependent view of the self. Notably\, however\, non-Western cultural zones display significant variability. I will explore several non-Western cultural zones\, such as Arab\, East Asian\, Latin American\, and South Asian zones\, and examine how these cultures may have played a substantial role in shaping the contemporary Western cultural zone. The Western cultural zone\, in contrast to non-Western zones\, prioritizes the self’s independence over interdependence. By going beyond the conventional Western-East Asian comparison\, this talk aims to broaden our understanding of the impact of culture on cognition\, emotions\, motivation\, and behavior. It highlights the significance of exploring diverse cultural zones to gain deeper insights into the intricate relationship between culture and the human mind.\n\nPsychological Diversity across the Globe\nDoes culture influence our psychology and behavior — and if so\, how? In this RCGD series\, we delve into the socio-ecological\, histo-cultural\, and economic dynamics shaping the diversity of selfhood and its associated cognitive\, emotional\, and motivational processes. We go beyond the traditional East and West focus to include a wide range of cultural groups. This series will elucidate the implications of psychological diversity across the globe for policies in international relations\, politics\, economics\, business\, immigration\, and other relevant domains.\n\nOrganized by Shinobu Kitayama and Catherine Thomas\nIn person: ISR Thompson 1430\nAs permissions allow\, seminars are later posted to our YouTube playlist.\n\nGroup Dynamics Seminar Series\nThe Group Dynamics Seminar series is considered one of the longest running seminar series in the social sciences. It has been running uninterruptedly since it was founded by Kurt Lewin in the 1920’s in Berlin. A very important feature of this seminar today is its interdisciplinary nature. Recent seminars have included discussions in “Law and Psychology\,” “Racism and Discrimination\,” “Social Media\,” and “New Directions in Social Psychology.”

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Algebraic Statistics and Brownian Motion Tree Models
DESCRIPTION:Algebraic statistics is an exciting area of math that studies statistical models using algebraic geometry\, commutative algebra\, and combinatorics. In this talk I will introduce two classical objects in algebraic statistics: the maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) and maximum likelihood degree (ML degree). We will explore these objects with an example from phylogenetics: Brownian motion tree models. This exploration will include a generalization of the Cayley-Prufer theorem that arises in computing the ML degree of Brownian motion tree models.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:ISRMT Seminar: Global Rational Approximations of Functions with Factorially Divergent Asymptotic Series
DESCRIPTION:Rational approximations of functions offer a rich mathematical theory. Touching subjects such as orthogonal polynomials\, potential theory and of course differential equations. In this talk we will discuss a specific type of rational approximant\, factorial expansions. In recent work with O. Costin and R. Costin we have developed a theory of dyadic expansions which improve the domain and rate of convergence when compared to the classical methods found in the literature. These results provide a general method for producing rational approximations of Borel summable series with locally integrable branch points. Surprisingly\, these expansions capture the asymptoticly important Stokes phenomena. Additionally\, we find applications in operator theory on Hilbert spaces providing new representations for (bounded and unbounded) positive and self-adjoint operators in terms of the semigroups and unitary groups they generate. Finally\, as an example of an important application we discuss representing the tritronquée solutions of Painlevé’s first equation.\n\nA recording of the talk can be found at \nhttps://youtu.be/1KC3Ah1fpFY

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:PPE Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Title: Justice by Means of Democracy\n\nAbstract: \nIn Justice by Means of Democracy\, Danielle Allen offers a new paradigm for political economy\, power-sharing liberalism. Building on the work of scholars like Amartya Sen\, Philip Pettit\, and Elizabeth Anderson\, Allen offers an innovative reconstruction of liberalism based on the principle of full inclusion and non-domination—in which no group has a monopoly on power—in politics\, economy\, and society. At a time of great social and political turmoil\, when many residents of the leading democracies question the ability of their governments to deal fairly and competently with serious public issues\, and when power seems more and more to rest with the wealthy few\, Allen reconsiders the very foundations of justice and democracy. The surest path to a just society in which all have the support necessary to flourish is the protection of political equality\, and recognizing this leads to an alternative strategy for the project of political economy.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Commutative Algebra Seminar: Cartier algebras through the lens of p-families
DESCRIPTION:A Cartier subalgebra of a prime characteristic commutative ring R is an associated non-commutative ring of operators on R that play nicely with the Frobenius map.\nWhen R is regular\, its Cartier subalgebras correspond exactly with sequences of ideals called F-graded systems. One special subclass of F-graded system is called a p-family\; these appear in numerical applications such as the Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity and the F-signature. In this talk\, I will discuss how to characterize some properties of a Cartier subalgebra in terms of its F-graded system.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Tuesday Lunch Seminar - \"Applied Community Ecology: The Case of Puerto Rican Ants in Coffee\"
DESCRIPTION:Coffee farms in Puerto Rico offer a perfect setting for studying community ecology since they are small\, similar to one another and abundant\, effectively creating a natural experiment. The ant community of these farms is evidently organized along the lines of what has come to be known as a metacommunity. The study of a particular assemblage of ants on one of these farms reveals interesting patterns of community structure\, some of which relates directly to practical issues such as pest control and carbon sequestration. Specifically\, the role of intransitive loops and higher order effects are evident and provide a mechanistic interpretation of some aspects of community structure.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Positive Links Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:Positive Links Speaker Series: For the Culture\nMarcus Collins\nTuesday\, September 12\, 2023\n2:00 - 3:00 p.m. ET\nFree\, registration required to obtain login information\n\nEvent link:\nhttps://positiveorgs.bus.umich.edu/events/for-the-culture/\n\nPositive Links:\nThe Positive Links Speaker Series\, presented by Michigan Ross’ Center for Positive Organizations\, offers inspiring and practical science-based strategies to build and bolster thriving organizations. Attendees learn from leading positive organizational scholars and connect with our community of academics\, students\, staff\, and leaders.\n\nAbout the talk:\nThere is no force more influential on human behavior than culture. What we wear\, what we watch\, who we marry\, how we vote\, what we support\, what we do\, and just about every aspect of daily living is informed by—and in many ways governed by—our cultural subscription. However\, our understanding of culture lacks the depth necessary to fully harness its power and integrate it into our business and leadership practices\, which inhibits today’s leaders from fully leveraging its sway to get people to take action. Those who understand the dynamics of culture are more likely to have influence\, while those who do not are almost always influenced by those who do. Therefore\, the aim of this talk is to unpack what gets us to a level of cultural understanding that can be used to drive behavioral adoption—i.e.\, get people to buy\, get companies to innovate\, get teams to become more customer-centric\, get employees to adhere to a new policy\, and the like—and\, subsequently\, drive business success for positive leaders. \n\nStudent Watch Party: Watch this streamed session together with other students for an in-person community experience followed by a structured discussion about how to put insights from Positive Links into practice. Registration for the Student Watch Party is included as an option when registering for this session of Positive Links.\n\nAbout Collins:\nMarcus Collins is an award-winning marketer and cultural translator. He is the former chief strategy officer at Wieden+Kennedy\, New York\, a marketing professor at the Ross School of Business\, University of Michigan\, and the author of the best-selling book\, For The Culture: The Power Behind What We Buy\, What We Do\, and Who We Want To Be. Collins is a recipient of Advertising Age's 40 Under 40 award and an inductee into the American Advertising Federation’s Advertising Hall of Achievement. Most recently\, he was recognized by Thinkers50 and Deloitte among their class of 2023 Radar List of 30 thinkers with the ideas most likely to shape the future. His strategies and creative contributions have led to the launch and success of Google’s “Real Tone” technology\, the “Made In America” music festival\, and the Brooklyn Nets\, among others. Before his advertising tenure\, Marcus worked on iTunes + Nike sport music initiatives at Apple and ran digital strategy for Beyoncé.\n\nHost:\nMonica Worline\, Faculty Director of Engaged Learning and Innovation\, Center for Positive Organizations\n\nSeries Sponsors:\nThe Center for Positive Organizations thanks Sanger Leadership Center\, Tauber Institute for Global Operations\, and Samuel Zell & Robert H. Lurie Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies for their support of the 2023-24 Positive Links Speaker Series.\n\nSeries Promotional Partners:\nAdditionally\, we thank Ann Arbor SPARK and the Managerial and Organizational Cognition (MOC) Division of the Academy of Management for their Positive Links Speaker Series promotional partnerships.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CM-AMO Seminar | Extreme Light-Matter Interactions in Two-Dimensional Materials
DESCRIPTION:When the field strength of the light approaches the internal Coulomb force of materials\, it can be used to control their electronic properties by inducing nonequilibrium quantum states. In this talk\, the potential of such intense light-matter interactions in novel two dimensional materials will be discussed\, with special emphasis on energy state control and extreme nonlinear optics. These experiments are enabled by the development of powerful mid-infrared light sources that can efficiently access internal resonance of electron-hole states\, known as excitons\, while avoiding sample damage that may result from direct photoabsorption. First part of the talk presents energy state control of two-dimensional materials beyond the perturbative regime\, wherein a light-dressed replica and giant blue shift of excitonic states are characterized. The second part of the talk shows the unique application of artificially stacked materials to realize nonlinear optical processes of high-harmonic generation with enhanced efficiency. These findings demonstrate the exciting opportunities of harnessing quantum dynamics beyond perturbation in two-dimensional materials.\n\nYuki Kobayashi is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Michigan. His research group at the U-M Chemistry is committed to developing new tools in spectroscopy\, such as attosecond x-ray light sources\, and using them to solve complex chemical/materials problems. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Colloquium Series Seminar: A constructive proof of nearly self-similar blowup of 2D Boussinesq and 3D Euler equations with smooth data
DESCRIPTION:Whether the 3D incompressible Euler equations can develop a finite time singularity from smooth initial data is one of the most challenging problems in nonlinear PDEs. In this talk\, I will present a new result with Dr. Jiajie Chen in which we prove finite time blowup of the 2D Boussinesq and 3D Euler equations with smooth initial data. There are several essential difficulties in establishing such blowup result. We use the dynamic rescaling formulation and turn the problem of proving finite time singularity into a problem of proving stability of an approximate self-similar profile. A crucial step is to establish linear stability and control a number of nonlocal terms. We decompose the solution operator into a leading order operator that enjoys sharp stability estimates plus a finite rank perturbation operator that can be estimated by constructing space-time numerical solutions with rigorous error control. This enables us to establish nonlinear stability of the approximate self-similar profile and prove stable nearly self-similar blowup of the 2D Boussinesq and 3D Euler equations with smooth initial data and boundary. This provides the first rigorous justification of the Hou-Luo blowup scenario.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:WCED Roundtable. The Troubling State of India's Democracy
DESCRIPTION:India’s democracy has long had its share of warts\, but it is now faced with unprecedented challenges. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi\, which began its second term in office in 2019\, has shown scant regard for democratic procedures and norms. A hitherto freewheeling\, feisty\, and contentious press has\, for the most part\, been cowed. Investigative agencies are routinely used to target key members of the political opposition. Civil liberties\, which had often been undermined selectively\, are now being regularly curbed. Even the historically independent Supreme Court has been circumspect and uneven in its judgments. \"The Troubling State of India’s Democracy\,\" edited by Diamond\, Ganguly\, and Mistree\, offers a comprehensive assessment of the health of Indian democracy while\, in particular\, it exposes the disturbing trend of accelerating democratic backsliding in India.\n\n\nPanelists: \n\nLarry Diamond\, Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution and the Mosbacher Senior Fellow in Global Democracy at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies (FSI)\, Stanford University\n\nSumit Ganguly\, Distinguished Professor of Political Science & Rabindranath Tagore Chair in Indian Cultures and Civilizations\, Indiana University\, Bloomington\n\nDinsha Mistree\, Research Fellow in the Rule of Law Program at Stanford Law School and Research Fellow at the Hoover Institution\, Stanford University. \n\nRespondents: Anindita Adhikari and Nandini Dey\, WCED Postdoctoral Fellows\n \nReception to follow.\n\nRegister here: http://myumi.ch/Rp7P6\n\n---\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact emergingdemocracies@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Hovey Lecture with Anna Clark of ProPublica
DESCRIPTION:Wallace House Presents the Graham Hovey Lecture with Anna Clark\n\nMichigan’s transparency laws are among the worst in the nation. The state is one of only two that totally exempts the governor’s office and lawmakers from open records laws. With political polarization high and public trust in institutions low\, a lack of transparency threatens to further weaken the social fabric. Pushing past the official version of events is essential to understanding abuses of power and exploring possible remedies.\n\nOver nearly two decades of reporting from and about Michigan\, 2017 Knight-Wallace Fellow and ProPublica journalist Anna Clark has covered numerous consequential stories\, from the Flint water crisis to the mass shooting at Oxford High School. Join her for a discussion on the dangers of a culture of secrecy for Michigan and beyond\, and what it takes to push back.

State St.\, Ann Arbor\, MI 48109\n \n Join the Global Islamic Studies Center\, on September 12th at 6:30 PM at the UMMA for a screening of the short film “American Jedi: The Salman Hamdani Story”. This screening will be followed by a talkback with filmmakers Nick Eyde and Mohammad Khalil.\n \n*American Jedi*: The Salman Hamdani Story: A devout Muslim and proud American immigrant makes the ultimate heroic sacrifice. Like the fictional Jedi he admires\, Salman Hamdani is ready to face adversity for the sake of others. On the morning of September 11\, 2001\, this young man takes a daring leap and runs toward the Twin Towers. When his body isn't immediately found\, his absence inevitably leads to questions--and suspicions. His family is forced to overcome tragedy and ostracization in response to their son's death.\n \n Mohammad Khalil is a professor of Religious Studies\, adjunct professor of Law\, and the director of the Muslim Studies Program at Michigan State University. He has authored and edited multiple books on Islam and Muslims and was the lead investigator of the Muslims of the Midwest digital archive. He received all of his degrees from the University of Michigan.\n\n Nick Eyde played for six seasons in the Italian Football League\, quarterbacking for the Rome Ducks\, Reggio Emilia Hogs\, Lazio Marines and Bolzano Giants\, including one Italian Bowl appearance. He is now a real estate developer in the Toledo area. He redeveloped the former Fiberglas Tower into the mixed-use Tower on the Maumee and spearheaded the effort to bring the Italian Bowl to the Glass City (Toledo). He has been a featured guest star on Chicago Fire and has produced a handful of independent film projects.\n \n \nThis event is brought to you by the Global Islamic Studies Center and cosponsored by the Digital Islamic Studies Curriculum\, the Center for Middle Eastern & North African Studies\, The Department of Middle East Studies\, Arab and Muslim American Studies\, and the MSU Muslim Studies Program.\n \nWant to hear about similar events from U-M Islamic Studies?
