SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Rackham/Sweetland Workshop: How to Make Revision Count—Revising Practices for Graduate Students
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will introduce new graduate students to revising practices to advance their academic writing.\nThe most critical phase in the writing process is also the most mysterious and least taught. Revision is especially challenging for first-year graduate writers learning to write extended academic arguments. What do academic writers do when they revise their work? How does an early draft become a polished\, publishable article? This workshop will demystify the role of revision in academic writing – to advance and refine our good ideas! – and provide strategies to help you build quality revision into your writing practice. You will expand your revising practices and elevate your writing skills for graduate school.\nRegistration is required at https://myumi.ch/AZ68G.\nWe want to ensure full and equitable participation in our events. If an accommodation would promote your full participation in this event\, please follow the registration link to indicate your accommodation requirements. Please let us know as soon as possible in order to have adequate time\, preferably one week\, to arrange for your requested accommodations or an effective alternative.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Handcrafted Careers: Examining Passion and Privilege in the Craft Beer Industry
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, Eli Wilson takes us inside the world of craft beer\, exposing how the industry\, traditionally dominated by bearded white men\, can be an exclusionary space that limits career opportunities for outsiders. Dr. Wilson's research asks big questions about how racism\, sexism\, and class dynamics impact the career paths of craft beer’s workers\, exploring how men tend to move into creative roles of authority\, whereas women are steered towards hospitality and working-class or Latinx workers into warehouse roles. While some of this is not surprising\, the heart of this talk is a critique of what it means to pursue a career of passion. Many people\, including those who might have traditionally pursued a white-collar career\, are drawn to the world of craft brewing because they want to be involved with something they love. They want to create\, make a craft\, be an artisan. But at what cost to themselves – and for those around them?

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Ex Post Strategy-proofness
DESCRIPTION:In this paper\, we study ex post strategy-proofness (ESP)\, a natural notion of strategy- proofness in settings with interdependent values. ESP requires that\, for every agent\, truthful reporting is always optimal regardless of the strategies and types of other agents. For environments with transfers\, ESP implementability is characterized by a generalized cyclical monotonicity condition. Alternatively\, implementability can be characterized by an optimality condition related to an induced matching problem between types and alternatives. In an important class of environments where types satisfy a generalized “one-dimensionality” property\, implementability is equivalent to a simple monotonicity condition where “higher” types receive “higher” alternatives. Using this finding\, we show that for a single object auction\, more allocation rules are implementable if either the type space is less dense or the extent of preference interdependence is less severe. For environments without transfers\, nontrivial implementation is possible only when preferences exhibit sufficient independence. In the context of binary and ternary voting models\, we illustrate how this condition significantly constrains the scope of implementation.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:AIM Seminar: The algebra of system-level design
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: The task of system design is shared by all engineering disciplines\, each coming with its own techniques. In spite of their differences in tools\, there is large intersection in their conceptual approach to design. In this talk\, we exploit this commonality to take an abstract view of systems and their composition. We understand systems and subsystems in terms of their assume-guarantee specifications\, or contracts.\n \nAssume-guarantee contracts are formal specifications that state (i) the assumptions that a design element makes on its environment and (ii) the guarantees it delivers when the environment behaves according to the contract's assumptions. Contracts come with a rich algebra that allows us to carry out several design-relevant tasks: obtaining system-level specifications from component specifications\, finding specifications of components that need to be added to a design in order to meet an objective\, etc. We will introduce the algebra of contracts and discuss how the various algebraic operations relate to system-design tasks. We will then provide a universal characterization of contracts as the adjoint of a well-known functor. Time permitting\, we will discuss the application of this methodology and Pacti\, a software package that supports system design using contracts\, in areas ranging from space-mission design to autonomous vehicles.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Cyclically ordered quivers (Combinatorics Seminar)
DESCRIPTION:Quivers and their mutations play a fundamental role in the theory of cluster algebras. We focus on the problem of deciding whether two given quivers are mutation equivalent to each other. Our approach is based on introducing an additional structure of a cyclic ordering on the set of vertices of a quiver. This leads to new powerful invariants of quiver mutation. These invariants can be used to show that various quivers are not mutation acyclic\, i.e.\, they are not mutation equivalent to an acyclic quiver. This talk is partially based on joint work with Sergey Fomin [arXiv:2406.03604].

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Seminar | Fusing conformal defects in higher dimensions
DESCRIPTION:We study operator algebra of extended conformal defects in more than two spacetime dimensions. Such algebra structure encodes the combined effect of multiple impurities on physical observables at long distances as well as the interactions among the impurities. These features are formalized by a fusion product which we define for a pair of defects\, after isolating divergences that capture the effective potential between the defects. These divergences generalize the usual Casimir energy and define a novel effective field theory for defects. We discuss general properties of the corresponding fusion algebra and give explicit examples. We also derive universal formulas for defect structure constants from the defect effective field theory.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student Algebraic Geometry: K-trivial varieties
DESCRIPTION:It is believed that the world of projective varieties is built upon three pillars\, depending on the positivity of the canonical bundle K. If K is negative or positive\, they are called Fano\, or canonically polarized\, which people have some understanding of (ex\, moduli). The monster lives there where K has no positivity nor negativity. We will investigate what kind of varieties we have in this world.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Webinar: Course-Based Research Provides Coastal Insights Through Collaborative Science and Big Data Skills
DESCRIPTION:The National Estuarine Research Reserve (NERR) System-Wide Monitoring Program (SWMP) provides an opportunity to compare site-based monitoring data from a wide range of estuaries across the nation to discover patterns and trends in ecosystem dynamics. Despite decades of SWMP data being amassed – and the Reserve System’s interest in investigating long-term changes in estuarine systems – limited personnel capacity has often prevented these datasets from being fully utilized. To address this need\, a catalyst project developed a graduate level class at University of Wisconsin-Madison for Spring 2024 with dual learning objectives: a technical objective to learn ecological big data skills and a collaborative objective to learn how to conduct user-driven collaborative science. In this webinar\, the project team will share their journey of developing and implementing the class\, highlight student findings\, and demonstrate analyses that they used to address science and management questions. They will also discuss lessons learned along the way and future opportunities for this teaching model to be used by the NERRS and partners.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture - Christopher Francis\, Stanford University
DESCRIPTION:Ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) carry out key transformations of ammonia in estuarine systems such as San Francisco Bay (SFB)—the largest estuary on the west coast of North America—and play a significant role in both local and global nitrogen cycling. Using metagenomics and 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing\, we found that AOA are more abundant than ammonia-oxidizing bacteria and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria\, except in the freshwater stations in SFB. Surprisingly\, in South SFB we observed recurrent AOA blooms of “Candidatus Nitrosomarinus catalina” SPOT01-like organisms\, which account for over 20% of the overall microbial community and co-occur with weeks of high nitrite concentrations (>10 μM) in the oxic water column. We also observed pronounced nitrite peaks occurring in the autumn for 7 of the last 9 years\, suggesting that seasonal AOA blooms are common in South SFB. To carefully examine the dynamics and activity of nitrifying microorganisms over the course of an AOA bloom in South SFB\, we measured nitrification rates\, quantified AOA abundance\, and analyzed both metagenomic and metatranscriptomic data during the autumn of 2018 and seasonally throughout 2019. Overall\, our study confirms that AOA are not only abundant but also highly active during blooms oxidizing large amounts of ammonia to nitrite—a key intermediate in the microbial nitrogen cycle—and producing reactive compounds that may impact other members of the microbial community.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CSAS Kavita Datla Memorial Lecture | Criss-crossing narratives of empire: Sir Syed at Versailles and the French conquest of Algeria
DESCRIPTION:Attend in person or via Zoom: https://myumi.ch/Rm5e4 \n\nIn 1869\, Sayyid Ahmad Khan (“Sir Syed”) made a brief stop in Paris on his way to a life-transforming journey to Britain. At Versailles\, he was shocked and upset when confronted by a huge\, almost panoramic painting\, “La prise de smala d’Abd el-Kader” for its brutal depiction of the humiliation of the Algerians\, particularly the women\, which for the French was a triumphal celebration of a turning point in their conquest of Algeria a quarter century earlier. Sayyid Ahmad’s encounter with the painting summons up a challenge for historical exposition\, weaving together histories of nineteenth-century French and British imperialism with respect to North Africa and India and the lives of two major contemporary leaders\, Amir Abd al-Qadir and Sayyid Ahmad Khan.\n\nDavid Lelyveld is the author of *Aligarh’s First Generation: Muslim Solidarity in British India* (1978\, reprinted 2003). His publications also deal with the social and political history of Urdu and its differentiation from Hindi. He has held faculty and administrative positions at the University of Minnesota\, Columbia and Cornell. He retired as Professor of History at William Paterson University in New Jersey.\n \n *The lecture is made possible through the generosity of Dr. Kavita Datla's family and friends.*\n\nFree and open to the public

SUMMARY:Performance:Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare
DESCRIPTION:Fate. Freedom. Power. This wild & fresh adaptation of one of the greatest political tragedies in theatrical history opens up the traditional confines of the narrative to explore the still-beating heart that resonates loudly in today’s political landscape. \n\nAdapted & directed by Priscilla Lindsay\n\nRecommended Ages: 15+\n\n*Content Advisory*\nContains depictions of intimacy\, violence and death by suicide.\n\n*Friday Post-Show Discussions*\n\nThe company of \"Julius Caesar\" will host two post-show discussions\, immediately following the two performances on Friday nights.\n\nThe October 4 post-show discussion will focus on how this production of Julius Caesar\, with an all-women cast\, challenges traditional notions of power and leadership by placing women in roles historically played by men. The portrayal of ambition\, loyalty\, and betrayal takes on new meaning when viewed through the lens of gender\, raising important questions about how women in leadership are perceived and judged today. As we approach the 2024 presidential election\, this performance invites us to reflect on the barriers women face in political life and how public rhetoric\, like that seen in the play\, continues to shape our understanding of authority and influence in modern society. The conversation will be led by M. Candace Christensen (they/them)\, an associate professor at the University of Michigan School of Social Work\, and Ashley Lucas (she/her)\, a professor in the Department of Theatre & Drama.\n\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit \"Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World: Interracial Identity in the U.S. and Around the World — What Research and Mixed Race People Tell Us\" is an exploration into the library's collections about the diversity of mixed race heritage. Through research\, narratives\, demographic data\, and a variety of visual and published materials\, explore multifaceted aspects of mixed race heritage with insights from many perspectives.\n\nThe 2020 U.S. Census illuminated a 276 percent increase in individuals who identify as \"two or more races\" since 2010. In recognition of the growing numbers of mixed race-identifying people at the University of Michigan\, throughout the country\, and across the globe\, we're excited to unveil this new exhibit — a unique exploration of changing demographics and intersectional identities.\n\n[The Hatcher Library will be closed December 21 to January 1.]

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Welcome. Make Yourself At Home.\n \nA Gathering brings together the newest works of art to enter UMMA’s collection — many on display here for the first time. \n \nAs a free\, public museum\, UMMA staff takes care of art for the benefit of the community and society at large. The works on view in this exhibition\, all brought into the Museum between 2019 and the present\, shows how institutions like UMMA are becoming more permeable to societal challenges\, and more nimble in responding to them in service to all in their communities. In this exhibition you will find works that reflect on how global migrations\, race\, gender\, and ecological change shape the way we engage with the world and inform our visions for the future.\n \nThis collection of artistic engagements with issues give us tools to envision who we want to be as individuals\, as a museum\, and as a society\, connected to one another across space and experience.\n \nSo gather here to take in these latest works of art brought here for you. Gather here to be engulfed in their forms and meanings\, to discuss their takes\, to learn\, to disagree. Gather to relax\, make a friend\, drink a coffee\, finish the daily Wordle. Gather to feel full\, to be moved and inspired by all the possible imaginations of what is yet to come.\n \nCurated by Félix Zamora Gómez Irving Stenn\, Jr. Fellow in Public Humanities & Museum Pedagogy\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Kelly Church & Cherish Parrish: In Our Words\, An Intergenerational Dialogue
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition Dates: September 13 – December 7\, 2024Opening Reception: September 19\, 2024\n\nKelly Church &amp\; Cherish Parrish: In Our Words\, An Intergenerational Dialogue is a major exhibition that centers the subjectivities of two contemporary Indigenous artists whose practices have sustained and bolstered the relevance of the age-old Anishinaabe practice of black ash basket-making in the 21st century. The exhibition highlights the significance of community-based conversations between mother and daughter\, and their ongoing conversations with elders (ancestors)\, young folx\, and future generations as vital aspects of their methodology. These conversations often take place during basket gatherings - where community members come together and share stories and teachings that can encompass Anishinaabe creation stories\, as well as those of survivance and resilience\, to inform the materiality and liveness of their work. The curatorial and interpretive framework of this exhibition contends that the deeply situated and temporal works by Church (Stamps\, BFA 1998) and Parrish (LSA\, BA 2020) are repositories for Anishinaabe ways of knowing\, thinking\, and making that contribute to the complexity of American art and its histories. The expansive and bold practices of Church and Parrish affirm the sovereignty of Anishinaabe lifeways and the importance of including Indigenous narratives that have systematically been left out. Thus\, the thematic survey of their work will explore the under-examined themes that inform their work such as Native women’s labor as carriers of culture and knowledge-keepers\, the legacy of boarding schools and ancestors who walked on\, the treaties in Michigan and the long-overlooked legacy of Anishinaabe intellectual life and their relevance today. Just like the practice of weaving and interlacing distinct strips of black ash to create one whole\, Church and Parrish will address the diverse and interconnected themes with approximately 30-35 works\, including 15-17 new works. Together\, the exhibition offers an incisive critique of the colonial\, racist paradigm of systemic erasure and assimilation that continues to this day\, with the ongoing crises of missing and murdered Indigenous women\, culture wars\, and climate change that threaten Indigenous ways of living\, sustenance\, and making. \nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra with Curatorial Assistant Zoi Crampton.\nStamps Gallery is grateful to Michigan Humanities and U-M Arts Initiative for generously supporting the exhibition and programs.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Certain absences are so stressed\, so ornate\, so planned\, they call attention to themselves\; arrest us with intentionality and purpose\, like neighborhoods that are defined by the population held away from them.” \n \n— Toni Morrison\n\nLead support for Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the U-M Arts Initiative\, and the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Michelle Hinojosa: Logcabins
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery commissioned Michelle Hinojosa (MFA\, 2023) to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the Gallery. Hinojosa has created log cabin quilts to adorn the columns in front of Stamps Gallery. The log cabin quilts traditionally represent the warm hearth at the center of a home. This installation reflects on the interplay between home\, placemaking\, labor\, and intergenerational memories of migration. Rather than quilting cotton designed to softly embrace the body\, these quilts are sewn from outdoor grade\, UV-resistant polyester. The quilt is an ode to Hinojosa’s grandmother who illegally crossed the US/Mexico border holding her babies and her quilts. As she and her family drove across the United States to work in the fields of the Salinas Valley\, the quilts offered a safe space for her and her family. Hinojosa celebrates their resilience to her grandmother and elders while also drawing attention to precarity and violence experienced by refugees and migrants crossing the US-Mexico border in our present today.\nArtist’s bio:\nMichelle Inez Hinojosa is an artist\, educator\, and researcher whose work is informed by Indigenous and Latine/x/a/o studies. Born and raised in Texas\, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in both drawing and painting and art education with a minor in art history at the University of North Texas. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. She works with quilting\, bead weaving\, embroidery\, jewelry\, transparent film installations\, painting\, ceramics\, and sculpture to honor and explore the history of migration in her family and humanize the current discourse around migration still occurring at the southern border. Alongside her artwork she maintains a writing practice to re-story\, re-make\, and re-claim the often subordinated narratives of Latinx\, Chicanx\, Mexican\, and Texican peoples. \n\nRecently\, Hinojosa was named an inaugural Creative Careers Artist in Residence at the University of Michigan\, she has also attended residencies at Mildred's Lane (Pennsylvania)\, Anderson Ranch Art Center (Aspen\, CO) and The Cedars Union (Dallas\, TX).

SUMMARY:Performance:Kris Davis Trio
DESCRIPTION:*Run the Gauntlet* emerges as the latest album from Kris Davis\, accompanied by the extraordinary talents of bassist Robert Hurst and drummer Johnathan Blake. \n\nThe title\, *Run the Gauntlet*\, serves as a metaphor for overcoming challenges to achieve one's goals. In this project\, Davis pays homage to six trailblazing women pianists who have left an indelible mark on her journey as a pianist and composer: Geri Allen\, Carla Bley\, Renee Rosnes\, Angelica Sanchez\, Marilyn Crispell\, and Sylvie Courvoisier. These remarkable women not only navigated the male-dominated field of jazz but also profoundly influenced Davis's development as a pianist and composer. By dedicating the album to these extraordinary women\, Davis honors their resilience and groundbreaking contributions as leaders in the jazz community.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Mrs. Dalloway and WWI: Home Front and War Front
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit explores the characters of Mrs. Dalloway through the lens of WWI and its aftershocks. It looks at those who fought in the trenches and those who watched from afar.\n\n[The exhibit includes references to suicide and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder\, which might be distressing for some visitors. Viewer discretion is advised.]\n\nWhile all of the action in Virginia Woolf’s modernist masterpiece takes place on a single day\, as preparations are made for Clarissa Dalloway’s evening party\, Woolf’s stream of consciousness writing takes us in the characters’ minds all the way from English drawing rooms to colonial India to the trenches of World War I.\n\nCheck today's Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours: https://myumi.ch/PkQ2x

SUMMARY:Performance:University Symphony Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:Kenneth Kiesler\, conductor\nFabiola Kim\, violin\n\nPROGRAM\nBraxton Blake (World Premiere)\, *Toccata* – *The premiere of this piece has been postponed. \nSamuel Barber\, Violin Concerto\nBrahms\, Symphony No. 4\n\nThis USO concert brings together the world premiere of an exuberant new work\, a beautiful and exciting 20th century violin concerto played by a stellar soloist\, and a beloved masterpiece. Ann Arbor composer Braxton Blake has written a brand-new piece for very large orchestra expressly for the USO. The notes fly like the wind\, with thrilling effect. The composer said\, “A virtuosic work\, the *Toccata* was composed to be an energetic and driven piece. Every instrument and orchestral grouping have solo and soli passages that highlight the orchestra's and their conductor's gifts – it is in many ways a brief concerto for orchestra.”\n\nHailed by the *New York Times* as “a brilliant soloist\,” who “played with extraordinary precision and luminosity\,” Fabiola Kim is a dynamic and versatile artist who enjoys a diverse career as a soloist\, chamber musician\, recording artist and a pedagogue. She joins the USO for the songful and stunning Violin Concerto by Samuel Barber. Its first two movements are songful\, warm\, and beautiful. The finale brings the first half of the concert to a close the way it began\, with a kind of perpetual motion that is rapid and very virtuosic.\n\nThe Fourth Symphony by Brahms stands as a towering monument in the landscape of all symphonies. It is a compelling and mostly tragic drama which draws on hallowed music of the past\, with striking innovation and a forward-leaning palette of instrumental colors.\n\nGUEST ARTIST BIO:\nhttps://smtd.umich.edu/profiles/fabiola-kim/\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. Threads of Tradition: The Art of Ukrainian Vyshyvanka
DESCRIPTION:The act of embroidering and weaving designs onto cloth is deeply rooted in Ukrainian traditions. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Guardians: Spirits of Protection
DESCRIPTION:This fall\, the Residential College Art Gallery proudly presents Guardians: Spirits of Protection\, an exhibition of evocative figurative sculptures by renowned artist Ann Savageau. The exhibition will be on display from August 26 to November 2\, 2024.\n\nWe invite the university community and the general public to explore this moving collection that delves into themes of loss\, grief\, healing\, and protection. The seventeen life-size figures\, crafted from found objects and beach flotsam\, are a poignant response to the tragedies in Savageau’s life\, including the loss of her three children. Through this deeply personal and powerful work\, Savageau reimagines discarded materials as symbols of new life and resilience\, reflecting the healing power of art.\n\nAnn Savageau will be in residence in Ann Arbor and the Residential College from September 16-20 and October 20-25\, 2024. During her stay\, you are warmly invited to join us for a special artist reception on October 23\, from 4:30 to 6:00 pm in the Gallery. Prior to the reception\, there will be an artist's talk in the Keene Theater at 3:30 pm\, where Savageau will share insights into her creative process and the inspiration behind Guardians.\n\nAnn Savageau\, a former Studio Art instructor at the Residential College from 1978 to 2002\, is not only an artist but also an activist and educator. Her contributions to the Prison Creative Arts Project\, where she taught a weekly art workshop at Jackson Prison for four years\, showcase her commitment to using art as a tool for social change.\n\nDon't miss this opportunity to witness the transformative impact of Savageau's work and engage with her during her residency. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Steve Glazer Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Steve Glazer earned his BFA in art with a concentration in ceramics from Eastern Michigan University\, a master’s degree in art from Central Michigan University\, and MFA in fine arts and ceramics from Indiana State University. Since 2004\, Glazer has been lead faculty and head of ceramics at Henry Ford College\, and former faculty of Concord College (WV) and North Dakota State University. His artwork has been exhibited throughout the country.\n\nThroughout his adult life the art of Steve Glazer has been done as a response to his environment. From a series of shadow box type pieces containing life like ceramic fish while teaching at a Catholic woman’s college\, to building 8’ tall ceramic “skyscrapers” that barely fit into the display spaces while teaching in North Dakota\, where no skyscrapers exist\, and then creating installations commenting on living in Appalachia while teaching in southern West Virginia. After returning home to Detroit\, Glazer began his griot series\, the “Motor City Griot Society” masks\, the faces of the superheroes that will save Detroit\, and more recently the “Motor City Griot Patrol” creatures that will protect the city of Detroit.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Susan Moran Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Susan Moran’s work is inspired by the natural world and our place in it. She collects and arranges images\, builds and subtracts\, and uses processes that suit the concepts and gives the pieces a reason for existing as textiles. Simultaneously she strives to make the medium influence the outcome in such a way that cloth and image meld together. Moran uses silkscreen\, shibori\, and stitching to embed images from her daily walks into the fabric. it's important that the work builds slowly\, involving meditative processes that connect her to the cloth and the source of the design.\n\nGallery hours: Monday-Friday\, 9 am to 5pm or by appointment serrag@med.umich.edu

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Butch Closet
DESCRIPTION:In the multi-media installation *The Butch Closet*\, artist Phranc illustrates her life stories as a queer artist\, Jewish lesbian folk singer\, and \"cardboard cobbler.\" By meticulously re-creating personal objects and pieces of clothing out of paper\, cardboard\, thread\, and paint\, she revisits her own history\, contextualizing her experiences as an iconic performer\, and maker\, constructing\, reconstructing\, and re-imagining her image against a larger historical context of second-wave feminism and queer activism. The institute's presentation of *The Butch Closet* is the second iteration of the project\, offering a more intimate and immersive engagement with Phranc's sculptural works. As part of the installation\, visitors can peer into a closet built in the center of the gallery designed by the artist. Conceptually\, the space shifts from inside to outside\, public and private\, and explores themes of visibility and that which remains inaccessible or unseen.\n\nAbout the artist:\nPhranc is a jewish lesbian folksinger and queer artist who uses song\, painting and sculpture to champion personal identities and illustrate the struggle\, survival\, and victory of the queer individual. An internationally acclaimed and award winning performer. Phranc’s work integrates humor and a butch lesbian aesthetic. Her current project\, Phranc Talk: The Butch Closet\, is a multi-media memoir that spans her 40-year career. Phranc lives and works in Santa Monica\, California and Vancouver\, British Columbia.\n\n*Phranc is the 2024 Woodhead Visiting Artist at the Institute for the Humanities.*

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:Vesuvius Scrolls: From Ancient Manuscripts to Artificial Intelligence
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, Octobor 7\, 2024\, 10:00 am – 6:45 pm\nHussey Room\, Michigan League (911 N University Ave\, Ann Arbor\, MI 48109)\n\nTuesday\, Octobor 8\, 2024\, 9:30 am – 12:30 pm\nHatcher Gallery\, Hacher Graduate Library (913 S University Ave\, Ann Arbor\, MI 48109)\n\nAbout: The Herculaneum Papyri\, buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 and rediscovered in 1754\, constitute the only library from the ancient Mediterranean world (except the library of Ashurbanipal and the Dead Sea Scrolls) that was found in circumstances that preserved it intact. It contains unique works of ancient Greek philosophy and Roman literature. Many of the 800 papyrus-rolls were opened physically (and thereby badly damaged)\, but around 270 scrolls or parts of them survive in their original condition\, being too fragile to be opened. \n\nSince 2005\, computer scientist Brent Seales has toiled to discover a way to recover their texts without damaging them. His work entailed using CT technology to separate and flatten digitally the successive circumferences and “unroll” the papyrus digitally on screen. The next problem was how to recognize the ink. The latter problem was resolved in 2024 by Casey Craig’s recognition of ‘crackle’ and then the application of Machine Learning. Upon the initiative of Nat Friedman\, who established the Vesuvius Challenge\, and with contributions from many members of the international AI community\, three contestants\, Luke Farritor\, Youssef Nader\, and Julian Schilliger\, won the Grand Prize by producing legible images of Greek text of 16 columns from a roll that is preserved in Paris and was scanned with the Diamond Light Source at Oxford. \n\nAnother Grand Prize has been offered for 2024\, focused on recovering the text from all four scrolls that are in Paris. This one-day conference is timed to bring together papyrologists and experts in Artificial Intelligence to review the progress that has been made\, consider how to address the problems that remain\, and to discuss future directions\, including the potential for the use of AI in work on other collections of damaged manuscripts and in the humanities more widely. On the following day there will be a workshop to exchange ideas. Solutions to present problems and possible future directions may be clarified by a visit to the unique collections housed in the University of Michigan (807 Hatcher Library)\, which include Egyptian\, Greek\, Latin\, Coptic\, and Arabic writings on papyrus\, parchment\, wood\, lead\, waxed tablets\, and potsherds\, Medieval Greek manuscripts on parchment and paper\, and Islamic manuscripts on paper.\n\nVisit our event page for more information: https://midas.umich.edu/vesuvius-scrolls-from-ancient-manuscripts-to-artificial-intelligence/

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CMENAS 2024 Fall Colloquium Series. The Evolution of the Palestinian Refugee Camps in Jordan
DESCRIPTION:The presentation analyses the political and socioeconomic issues raised by the evolution of the camps' physical and social infrastructure in Jordan since their establishment in the wake of the 1948 and 1967 Arab-Israeli wars. In so doing\, the presentation tackles the gradual development and integration of camps in their local environment\, discussing the way camp refugees\, together with the international (UNRWA) and Jordanian stakeholders have dealt with the dilemmas posed by such integration : how develop camps in line with the evolving needs of the refugees while guaranteeing their temporary nature in the name of the “right of return”\, as supported by numerous UN resolutions? Conversely\, how reconcile the preservation of the camps\, with their generally substandard infrastructure and socially-strained social relations\, and the country’s drive towards urban modernization ? The presentation will also address the « camps’ society » : To what extent do camp refugees constitute specific communities\, socially/politically distinct from neighbouring communities?\n \n Jalal Al Husseini is an associate research fellow in political sociology at the French Institute for the Near East (IFPO). Based in Amman since 1997\, he has specialized in refugee assistance and labor market issues. Holder of a PhD obtained at the Graduate Institute of International Studies (Geneva)\, with a doctoral dissertation on the political dimensions of UNRWA’s mandate\, he is the author of numerous published academic articles and policy-oriented reports\, and the editor of several collective books including Palestinians between State and Diaspora: uncertainty times (2011) and Palestine in Networks (2020) and Migrations in Jordan: Reception Policies and Settlement Strategies (2024). He has also consulted with various international organizations\, including UNRWA\, the EU\, the ILO and foreign cooperation agencies\, on legal status and livelihoods issues specific to the Palestinian and Syrian refugees and their host communities in Jordan and in the Middle East.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Innovation Insights: A Research Talk with Carlton Fong
DESCRIPTION:Student motivation can be a persistent challenge in college learning. Students shift from being bored to inspired and back––moment to moment\, day to day\, class to class. How do students initiate and maintain their own motivation? How can educators facilitate and complement this dynamic process? In this Innovation Insights Research Talk\, Carlton Fong will discuss these issues and more based on his recent meta-analytic study on the role of motivational regulation strategies published in the Journal of Educational Psychology. You’ll learn about what these strategies entail and how they are related to students’ achievement\, engagement\, motivation\, and other learning processes.\n\n\n*Innovation Insights*\nThe Center for Academic Innovation brings together people who want to transform education\, share knowledge\, and increase learner success by hosting inspiring talks\, collaborative problem-solving workshops\, and discussions on the latest in educational research and practice. The Innovation Insights series features a diverse lineup of topics\, delivered by leaders in academia and private industry\, united by the common goals of delivering insights into how to further academic innovation and build the future of education.\n\n\n*About Carlton Fong*\nDr. Carlton J. Fong is an associate professor in the Graduate Program in Postsecondary Student Success at Texas State University. As a scholar-activist at the intersection of educational psychology and higher education\, Dr. Fong uses a sociocultural lens to study motivational factors influencing postsecondary student engagement\, achievement\, and persistence. He was awarded the 2023 Richard E. Snow Award for Early Contributions from the American Psychological Association\, the Rising Star designation by the Association for Psychological Science\, and a Deeper Learning Fellowship by the American Educational Research Association. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Student Logic and History of Math Seminar (Invited Address): Provability Logic
DESCRIPTION:Provability logic seeks to efficiently describe\, by suitable axioms and rules of inference\, what a reasonable theory can prove about its own provability predicate. Here “reasonable” means that the theory can prove basic facts about the natural numbers\; Peano arithmetic is more than enough.\n\nThe notation used in provability logic (meaning in the particular provability logic that I’ll concentrate on) is the same as in most modal logics\, namely ordinary propositional logic plus a modal operator\, written as a box. But the box operator has the unusual interpretation “it is provable that”. It turns out that this provability logic can be axiomatized by adding to ordinary propositional logic just one axiom (schema) and one inference rule. The rule is very simple\, but the axiom expresses Löb’s theorem\, a far from obvious fact about provability.\n\nI’ll begin by explaining Löb’s theorem. Then I’ll discuss the axiomatic system of provability logic and a few proofs in that system. Next\, I’ll describe the Kripke models of provability logic. Finally\, I’ll discuss two completeness theorems for this logic\, one saying that Kripke models provide a complete semantics\, and the other saying that provability logic exactly captures what a reasonable theory can prove about its own provability.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Foundations and Frontiers Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:Presentation Abstract\nFace processing plays a central role in everyday human life. We investigate the nature of face representation and processing in the brain\, by adapting and developing appropriate machine learning and computer vision methods. In the Foundations portion of the lecture\, I will be giving a review of the technical methods utilised in our modeling work\, including novel methods for combining image-computable machine vision algorithms with more classical psychological methods\, such as multidimensional scaling\, that take human similarity judgments into account.\n\nIn the Frontiers portion of the lecture\, I will describe our work using a neurobiologically supported and psychologically informed face representation\, to computational model and quantify human perception and judgment of faces\, including a computational explanations of the provenance of certain racial and gender biases. Furthermore\, we will examine some implications of these findings for the broader domains of psychiatry\, social psychology\, economics\, and political science. \n------\nSchedule\n2:00-2:30 pm Foundations Presentation\n2:30-2:40 pm Q & A\n—10 minute break—\n2:50-3:20 pm Frontiers Presentation\n3:20-3:30 pm Q & A\n-----\nDr. Yu conducts research at the intersection of natural and artificial intelligence. Her group uses mathematically rigorous and algorithmically diverse tools to understand the nature of representation and computations that give rise to intelligent behavior\, with particular regard to the challenges posed by inferential uncertainty and the opportunities afforded by volitional control. Using diverse machine learning and statistical tools\, e.g. Bayesian statistical modeling\, control theory\, reinforcement learning\, and information theory\, theoretical frameworks and mathematical models are developed to explain disparate aspects of cognition importation for intelligence: perception\, attention\, decision-making\, learning\, cognitive control\, active sensing\, economic behavior\, and social interactions. After completing her bachelor’s at MIT\, PhD at UCL Gatsby Computational Neuroscience Unit\, and postdoc training at Princeton University\, Dr. Yu was faculty at UCSD Cognitive Science for 14 years before joining TU Darmstadt in Germany as an Alexander von Humboldt AI Professor in late 2022. With her interdisciplinary expertise and interest\, Dr. Yu’s arrival strengthens and complements research at the Centre for Cognitive Science at TU Darmstadt and at hessian.AI\, the Centre for Artificial Intelligence of Hesse based in Darmstadt. Her new group currently has positions open for postdocs\, PhD students\, master’s students\, research interns\, and visiting scholars.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:HEP-Astro Seminar | Calibrating a Galactic-Scale Gravitational Wave Detector: Pulsar Timing Array Noise Modeling and Characterization
DESCRIPTION:Pulsar timing arrays (PTAs) are galactic-scale nanohertz gravitational wave observatories. Each individual arm\, composed of a millisecond pulsar\, a radio telescope\, and a kiloparsecs-long path\, differs in its properties but\, together\, can be used to extract low-frequency gravitational wave (GW) signals. While gravitational waves in the nanohertz band are orders of magnitude larger than signals in the ground-based and space-based regimes\, the noise sources in pulsar data are also comparatively larger. Here we will describe detector characterization for PTAs\, which requires simultaneously modeling the signal and noise across our astrophysical detector. Serendipitously\, many of the noise processes at work in pulsar observations\, considered noise when searching for nanohertz gravitational waves\, contain interesting astrophysics in their own right. After a general introduction to the subject\, I will highlight new time-domain analysis work that allows us to mitigate stochastic processes from the interstellar medium and intrinsic processes in the pulsars. Lastly\, I will present a noise and sensitivity analysis of the NANOGrav 15-year data release.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:RCGD Fall Seminar Series: The Social Psychology of Systemic Racism (Keith Payne)
DESCRIPTION:Implicit bias has expanded beyond academic research and\, like cognitive dissonance and nudges\, entered into the cultural mainstream. Politicians talk about it\, journalists write about it\, and corporations require their employees to be trained about it. At the same time\, the measures and methods used to study implicit bias have come under increasing criticism. How can implicit bias be so prevalent and yet stand on such apparently shaky grounds? In this talk I describe a new theory that describes implicit bias not primarily as a feature of individual minds\, but as a feature of social contexts. Akin to the “wisdom of crowds” effect\, implicit bias may emerge as the aggregate effect of individual fluctuations in concept accessibility that are ephemeral and context-dependent. This Bias of Crowds theory treats implicit bias tests as measures of situations more than persons. Viewing implicit bias from this perspective resolves several puzzles in the existing literature\, turns supposed methodological weaknesses into strengths\, and generates new insights into how and why implicit bias propagates inequalities. \n\nKeith Payne is Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience at UNC Chapel Hill. He studies the effects of inequality on human thought and behavior\, and how psychological patterns create and reinforce racial and economic disparities. He is author of The Broken Ladder: How Inequality Affects the way we Think\, Live\, and Die\, and the forthcoming Good Reasonable People: The Psychology Behind America’s Dangerous Divide.\n\nThe RCGD Seminar Series on the Social Psychology of Systemic Racism meets Mondays from 3:30 to 5 at ISR Thompson 1430. When speaker permission is given\, events will be recorded and later posted to YouTube.\n\nWhat are the points of connection between structures and individuals when we think about bias? In the Fall 2024 RCGD Seminar Series “The Social Psychology of Systemic Racism\,” an all-star lineup of behavioral and political psychologists will define what\, in their words\, makes systemic racism systemic\, and how extra-individual levels of analysis could be incorporated in social psychological theories and methods. \n\nGroup Dynamics Seminar Series\nThe Group Dynamics Seminar series is considered one of the longest running seminar series in the social sciences. It has been running uninterruptedly since it was founded by Kurt Lewin in the 1920’s in Berlin. The seminar series runs every semester on a theme chosen by faculty organizer/s who are affiliated with the Research Center for Group Dynamics at the Institute for Social Research. A very important feature of this seminar today is its interdisciplinary nature. Recent themes have included political polarization\, evolution and human behavior\, and cultural psychology

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CANCELLED! The Chinese Question: Diasporic Histories and Global Politics of Race with Mae Ngai
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED AND WILL BE RESCHEDULED IN 2025.\n\nThe Chinese Question is about the origins of Chinese diasporic communities in the West\; the rise of the racist movements and exclusion legislation passed against them\; and the struggles of the Chinese emigrants for respect and equal treatment\, as well as China itself\, in the international community. Chinese exclusion policies across the Anglo-American world showed the importance of domestic racism in the formation of nation-state identities. At another level\, they were also integral to the development of the late nineteenth-century ascent of Great Britain and the U.S. as global economic hegemons\, as creditors and as colonizers\, as nation builders\, and as empire builders. Because China was never formally colonized\, the Western powers imposed unequal treaties and exclusion laws as instruments of colonialism and containment. Exclusion policies were integral dynamics of colonialism and capitalism\; part of a new way of imagining\, organizing\, and governing the world.\n\nMae M. Ngai is Lung Family Professor of Asian American Studies and Professor of History\, and Co-Director of the Center for the Study of Ethnicity and Race at Columbia University.

SUMMARY:Meeting:Cluster Algebras and Weaves
DESCRIPTION:Cluster algebras are a class of commutative rings with a special set of generators endowed with a nice combinatorial structure. A traditional problem in the field pertains to rings of regular functions over some algebraic variety: whether they possess a cluster algebra description\, and if so\, how to describe as many clusters as possible. Weaves are a type of diagram first discovered in connection to symplectic geometry. In this talk\, we will describe braid varieties\, a large class including (open) Richardson varieties\; and we show how to use weaves to describe a large set of clusters in the coordinate rings of these varieties.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:STeMS Speaker Series | Viral: Metaphor\, Narrative\, Music
DESCRIPTION:Even prior to the COVID-19 pandemic\, “going viral” had nonetheless become commonplace—the epidemiological metaphor characterizing an increasingly-familiar trajectory of explosive circulation\, remix\, and reportage expanding from individual nodes of audiovisual content online. This presentation briefly historicizes and contextualizes the contagious concept\, before suggesting how “virality”—as aesthetic repertoire\, as popular narrative\, as social logic made concrescent in platform architectures—might also be understood as a form of musicality.\n\nI argue that participation in the production\, watching\, listening to\, circulating\, or sharing of “viral” digital internet objects has constituted a significant site of 21st-century musical practice. And across the 21st century\, digital platforms have adapted to facilitate this viral musicality\, using music’s positive capacities—aesthetic pleasure\, communal participation\, social connectivity—to enable corporate profit-making\, corral attention\, and incentivize acceptance of increasing technocapital enclosure of the internet and everyday life.\n\nPaula Clare Harper\, Assistant Professor at the University of Chicago\, is a musicologist who researches music\, sound\, and the internet. She is interested in putting digital ephemera and oddities into broader context\, in hearing the musicality of online meme cultures\, and in tracking music’s creation and circulation across digital platforms and communities. Her current book projects include Viral Musicking and the Rise of Noisy Platforms\, and the co-edited collection Taylor Swift: The Star\, The Songs\, The Fans.

SUMMARY:Presentation:U-M Psychology Community Talks: Dr. Kevin Cokley
DESCRIPTION:Talk Overview: Do you ever doubt your achievements? Have negative self-talk? Come up with excuses for your success? Feel like your failures define you? Feel like you don’t belong? Question your abilities? You are not alone. These are all hallmarks of the impostor phenomenon. These thoughts and feelings are common among many people\, with research indicating that over 80% of people report having impostor feelings. The impostor phenomenon is especially prevalent among women and minoritized individuals. In this talk\, Dr. Kevin Cokley will engage participants in a research-informed discussion about the impostor phenomenon. He will discuss how the impostor phenomenon is created and describe the impostor cycle. Dr. Cokley will highlight his research that examines how the impostor phenomenon impacts mental health and achievement among women and minoritized individuals and make the case for why there needs to be a reconceptualized\, racialized impostor phenomenon. Dr. Cokley will end by providing recommendations on how to combat impostor feelings. \n\nAbout the Speaker: Kevin Cokley\, Ph.D. is the University Diversity and Social Transformation Professor and Professor of Psychology at the University of Michigan where he serves as Associate Chair of Diversity Initiatives for the Department of Psychology. Dr. Cokley studies the psychosocial experiences of African American students and students of color and is currently exploring the impostor phenomenon and its relationship to mental health and academic outcomes. He is the past Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Black Psychology and holds the title of Distinguished Psychologist from the Association of Black Psychologists. He is past President of the Society for the Psychological Study of Culture\, Ethnicity\, and Race\, and was elected to Fellow status in the American Psychological Association for his contributions to ethnic minority psychology and counseling psychology. He is editor of the 2024 book “The Impostor Phenomenon: Psychological Research\, Theory\, and Interventions.” His research on the impostor phenomenon has been featured in the New York Times and the Harvard Business Review. Dr. Cokley has given numerous invited talks on the impostor phenomenon at places including Johns Hopkins University\, the University of Chicago\, UCLA Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior Grand Rounds\, Notre Dame University Law School\, the International Toastmaster Conference\, and Morgan Stanley.\n\nExploring the Mind: Community Talks by U-M Psychology Faculty is a talk series held in collaboration with the Ann Arbor District Library (AADL).\n\nTalks for Fall 2024 will be held in-person at AADL's downtown branch. Flyers for each talk\, including abstracts and speaker bios\, will be sent in advance to members of our audience located in the greater Ann Arbor area. Many talks will also be recorded and made available for later viewing online. Visit the Community Talks website for more information and to view past presentations.
