SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Spectroscopic studies of nucleic acid structure\, dynamics and photophysics
DESCRIPTION:RNA performs a diverse set of biological functions\, many of which require it to fold into specific structures. Many techniques have been developed to study RNA folding\, a number of which are based on fluorescence detection. I will present work in which we used fluorescent analogues of the natural RNA bases to selectively probe the structures of different conformational subpopulations of RNA. We investigated the photophysical properties of base analogues in different structural contexts using a combination of time-resolved fluorescence measurements and fluorescence-detected circular dichroism spectroscopy\, which circumvents the ensemble averaging that typically limits the power of bulk spectroscopic methods such as CD. Ensemble averaging can also be avoided by performing measurements on single molecules. I will present work in which we utilized single-molecule microscopy to investigate the ensemble of structures adopted by RNA \"switches\". These studies reveal how the 3D structure of RNA is impacted by intrinsic factors such as base sequence and extrinsic factors such as the binding of small molecules.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Dinner for Democracy: The Politics of Abortion
DESCRIPTION:Note: this is an in-person event on the Ann Arbor Campus.\n\nDobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization (2022) overturned decades of precedent set by Roe v. Wade (1973)\, ending federal protection to abortion access across the United States and returning the power to regulate abortion to the states. Since the Dobbs Decision\, some states have banned abortion entirely or enacted bans that start after a certain number of weeks. Meanwhile\, other states have passed ballot initiatives or legislation to protect access to abortion. Several states will have ballot initiatives relating to abortion during the 2024 general election. \n\nJoin Turn Up Turnout after our general meeting (5:00 pm in Weill Hall Room 1110) for a nonpartisan\, educational presentation to learn about the history and current state of The Politics of Abortion in the United States. FREE FOOD provided.\n\n Register here: https://sessions.studentlife.umich.edu/track/event/session/81533

SUMMARY:Performance:Delta 88
DESCRIPTION:An Indie Folk/Rock band based in Ann Arbor\, Michigan\, Delta 88’s music is that of an American hymn. Brought together on the four winds\, its members combine numerous musical influences to create their own unique sound like haunted mountain spirituals played through a distortion pedal. The songs move through wide channels of dynamic\, emotional arrangements\, from dark and somber barroom ballads to anthemic battle cries. With four studio albums\, the most recent produced by Grammy-award winning Joe Henry\, Delta 88 continues to mine for the new American songbook. The band’s music has been heard on stages through the U.S.\, Canada and Europe with the likes of Ralph Stanley\, Richard Buckner\, Emmylou Harris and Buddy Miller to name a few.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit \"Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World: Interracial Identity in the U.S. and Around the World — What Research and Mixed Race People Tell Us\" is an exploration into the library's collections about the diversity of mixed race heritage. Through research\, narratives\, demographic data\, and a variety of visual and published materials\, explore multifaceted aspects of mixed race heritage with insights from many perspectives.\n\nThe 2020 U.S. Census illuminated a 276 percent increase in individuals who identify as \"two or more races\" since 2010. In recognition of the growing numbers of mixed race-identifying people at the University of Michigan\, throughout the country\, and across the globe\, we're excited to unveil this new exhibit — a unique exploration of changing demographics and intersectional identities.\n\n[The Hatcher Library will be closed December 21 to January 1.]

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Guardians: Spirits of Protection
DESCRIPTION:This fall\, the Residential College Art Gallery proudly presents Guardians: Spirits of Protection\, an exhibition of evocative figurative sculptures by renowned artist Ann Savageau. The exhibition will be on display from August 26 to November 2\, 2024.\n\nWe invite the university community and the general public to explore this moving collection that delves into themes of loss\, grief\, healing\, and protection. The seventeen life-size figures\, crafted from found objects and beach flotsam\, are a poignant response to the tragedies in Savageau’s life\, including the loss of her three children. Through this deeply personal and powerful work\, Savageau reimagines discarded materials as symbols of new life and resilience\, reflecting the healing power of art.\n\nAnn Savageau will be in residence in Ann Arbor and the Residential College from September 16-20 and October 20-25\, 2024. During her stay\, you are warmly invited to join us for a special artist reception on October 23\, from 4:30 to 6:00 pm in the Gallery. Prior to the reception\, there will be an artist's talk in the Keene Theater at 3:30 pm\, where Savageau will share insights into her creative process and the inspiration behind Guardians.\n\nAnn Savageau\, a former Studio Art instructor at the Residential College from 1978 to 2002\, is not only an artist but also an activist and educator. Her contributions to the Prison Creative Arts Project\, where she taught a weekly art workshop at Jackson Prison for four years\, showcase her commitment to using art as a tool for social change.\n\nDon't miss this opportunity to witness the transformative impact of Savageau's work and engage with her during her residency. We look forward to seeing you at the RC Art Gallery.\n\nImportant Dates:\n\nExhibition: August 26 – November 2\, 2024\nArtist's Talk: October 23\, 2024\, at 3:30 pm\, RC Keene Theater\nArtist Reception: October 23\, 2024\, from 4:30 – 6:00 pm\, RC Art Gallery

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Welcome. Make Yourself At Home.\n \nA Gathering brings together the newest works of art to enter UMMA’s collection — many on display here for the first time. \n \nAs a free\, public museum\, UMMA staff takes care of art for the benefit of the community and society at large. The works on view in this exhibition\, all brought into the Museum between 2019 and the present\, shows how institutions like UMMA are becoming more permeable to societal challenges\, and more nimble in responding to them in service to all in their communities. In this exhibition you will find works that reflect on how global migrations\, race\, gender\, and ecological change shape the way we engage with the world and inform our visions for the future.\n \nThis collection of artistic engagements with issues give us tools to envision who we want to be as individuals\, as a museum\, and as a society\, connected to one another across space and experience.\n \nSo gather here to take in these latest works of art brought here for you. Gather here to be engulfed in their forms and meanings\, to discuss their takes\, to learn\, to disagree. Gather to relax\, make a friend\, drink a coffee\, finish the daily Wordle. Gather to feel full\, to be moved and inspired by all the possible imaginations of what is yet to come.\n \nCurated by Félix Zamora Gómez Irving Stenn\, Jr. Fellow in Public Humanities & Museum Pedagogy\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Learning Firm Conduct: Pass-Through as a Foundation for Instrument Relevance
DESCRIPTION:Researchers often test firm conduct models using pass-through regressions or instrumental variables (IV) methods. The former has limited applicability\; the latter relies on potentially irrelevant instruments. We show the falsifiable restriction underlying the IV method generalizes the pass-through regression\, and cost pass-through differences are the economic determinants of instrument relevance. We analyze standard instruments' relevance and link instrument selection to target counterfactuals. We illustrate our findings via simulations and an application to the Washington marijuana market. Testing conduct using targeted instruments\, we find the optimal ad valorem tax closely matches the actual rate.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Certain absences are so stressed\, so ornate\, so planned\, they call attention to themselves\; arrest us with intentionality and purpose\, like neighborhoods that are defined by the population held away from them.” \n \n— Toni Morrison\n\nLead support for Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the U-M Arts Initiative\, and the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Michelle Hinojosa: Logcabins
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery commissioned Michelle Hinojosa (MFA\, 2023) to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the Gallery. Hinojosa has created log cabin quilts to adorn the columns in front of Stamps Gallery. The log cabin quilts traditionally represent the warm hearth at the center of a home. This installation reflects on the interplay between home\, placemaking\, labor\, and intergenerational memories of migration. Rather than quilting cotton designed to softly embrace the body\, these quilts are sewn from outdoor grade\, UV-resistant polyester. The quilt is an ode to Hinojosa’s grandmother who illegally crossed the US/Mexico border holding her babies and her quilts. As she and her family drove across the United States to work in the fields of the Salinas Valley\, the quilts offered a safe space for her and her family. Hinojosa celebrates their resilience to her grandmother and elders while also drawing attention to precarity and violence experienced by refugees and migrants crossing the US-Mexico border in our present today.\nArtist’s bio:\nMichelle Inez Hinojosa is an artist\, educator\, and researcher whose work is informed by Indigenous and Latine/x/a/o studies. Born and raised in Texas\, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in both drawing and painting and art education with a minor in art history at the University of North Texas. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. She works with quilting\, bead weaving\, embroidery\, jewelry\, transparent film installations\, painting\, ceramics\, and sculpture to honor and explore the history of migration in her family and humanize the current discourse around migration still occurring at the southern border. Alongside her artwork she maintains a writing practice to re-story\, re-make\, and re-claim the often subordinated narratives of Latinx\, Chicanx\, Mexican\, and Texican peoples. \n\nRecently\, Hinojosa was named an inaugural Creative Careers Artist in Residence at the University of Michigan\, she has also attended residencies at Mildred's Lane (Pennsylvania)\, Anderson Ranch Art Center (Aspen\, CO) and The Cedars Union (Dallas\, TX).

SUMMARY:Well-being:Heartfulness Guided Meditation
DESCRIPTION:Heartfulness Guided Meditation is a weekly\, drop-in program designed to help you Mental well-being. \n\nAll U-M students\, faculty\, and staff are welcome to participate in guided meditation practice with a trainer every Friday at noon over Zoom (details to join are provided below). No prior experience with meditation is required. \n\n*What will you learn?*\n\nThe guided meditation practice involves three simple steps: relaxation\, rejuvenation\, and meditation.\n\nRelaxation brings your body to a calm\, steady posture creating a stillness at the physical level\, and prepares the mind for meditation. We follow this with a rejuvenation method to detox the mind to let go of stress and complex emotions\, and will leave you feeling light and refreshed. Lastly\, learning to meditate by being mindful of your heart will connect you with yourself by listening to your heart’s voice. \n\n*Why Meditate?*\n\nWhile physical fitness keeps our bodies in shape\, meditation is an exercise for the mind and mental wellness. In addition to the measurable benefits mentally and physically\, many people benefit from an unquantifiable inner poise and harmony. \n\n*Please take Learn to Meditate session if you are new to the practice. These sessions are offered Monthly.* https://events.umich.edu/event/128708\n\n*Event Details*\n\nHeartfulness Guided Meditation \nFridays from 12-12:30 p.m. ET (except during university season days / holidays)\nJoin Via Zoom Meeting\nRegister to receive Passcode (see “Related links”\n\n\nThis wellness program is coordinated by ITS Teaching & Learning and provided at no cost by heartfulness.org.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Organizational Work-Family Policies and Gendered Hiring Decisions
DESCRIPTION:Gender discrimination in hiring is complex and is often shaped by the broader social and economic environment. Yet\, the organizational context is often absent from our understanding of gendered hiring decisions. In this article\, we examine the relationship between supportive organizational work-family policies – such as paid parental leave – and gender discrimination in hiring. Extant theory offers competing predictions about the direction of this relationship\, which we are able to empirically test with our data. Beyond the direct link between organizational work-family policies and gender discrimination\, we also theorize how this association may vary with the type of work-family policy and the broader organizational climate surrounding work and family life. To gain empirical traction on these issues\, we draw on an original dataset that matches information on callbacks for men and women applicants in a field experiment with survey data about the work-family policies available at the organizations in the field experiment. We find limited evidence of a direct relationship between organizational work-family policies and gender discrimination in hiring\, regardless of the type of policy. However\, when organizations have a work-family climate that is perceived as unsupportive\, paid parental leave and the number of work-family policies at the organization are generally associated with lower levels of discrimination against women job applicants. We conclude by discussing the implications of these findings for scholarship on gender\, work\, and organizations.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Will Central Bank Digital Currency Disintermediate Banks?
DESCRIPTION:We estimate a dynamic banking model to quantify the impact of a central bank digital currency (CBDC) on banks. Our counterfactuals show that a one-dollar introduction of CBDC replaces bank deposits by 80 cents on the margin. Lending falls by 25% of the drop in deposits because banks partially replace lost deposits with wholesale funding. This substitution raises banks’ interest-rate risk exposure\, lowering their resilience to negative equity shocks. If CBDC bears interest or is intermediated through banks\, it captures a greater deposit market share\, amplifying the impact on lending. CBDC especially affects small banks\, which face expensive wholesale funding.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student CA Seminar - Reduction modulo p
DESCRIPTION:Given a function f in Z[x_1\, ...\, x_n]\, for each prime p\, we can consider the image f_p in F_p[x_1\, ...\, x_n]. This family of prime characteristic models of f give us data about the original function f: for example\, if any of the polynomials f_p are irreducible over F_p\, then f is irreducible over Q.\n\nIn this talk\, we'll explain how we can construct a family of prime characteristic models to any algebraic variety X over C. These models encode tremendous amounts of information about the original variety. For instance\, X is smooth if and only if (X mod p) is smooth for infinitely many primes p. We will discuss various applications of this perspective\, including the following theorem:\n\nLet S be a regular ring containing Q or F_p and R a subring which is also a direct summand of S. Then R is Cohen-Macaulay.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Math & MCAIM Colloquium: Homogenization of kirigami and origami-based mechanical metamaterials
DESCRIPTION:Mechanical metamaterials are many-body elastic systems that deform in unusual ways\, due to the interactions of nearly rigid building blocks. Examples include origami patterns with many folds\, or kirigami patterns made by cutting material from an elastic sheet. In either case\, the local deformations of the pattern involve internal degrees of freedom which must be matched with the usual global Euclidean invariances — e.g.\, groups of origami panels move by coordinated rotations and translations\, but it is still possible to bend the whole pattern into a curved shape. This talk will introduce the homogenization problem for kirigami and origami metamaterials to a broad audience\, and describe our recent results. Our goal is to explain the link between the design of the individual cuts/folds and the bulk deformations they produce. This is joint work with Paul Plucinsky (U. Southern California\, Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering) and Paolo Celli (Stony Brook U.\, Civil Engineering).\n\nThis talk will be mathematically self-contained\, not assuming a background in elasticity.\n\nEvent will be in-person and on Zoom: https://umich.zoom.us/j/98734707290

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Protein dynamics: Connecting in vitro\, in cell\, and in vivo
DESCRIPTION:Our current understanding of in vitro protein folding is due to decades of experimental and computational research that provided high-resolution characterization of protein structure\, identification of folding principles\, and development of folding algorithms. This research has benefited scientists broadly. For example\, machine learning can now predict a protein’s 3D shape from its amino-acid sequence\, proteins can be designed de novo for a specific fold or function\, and supercomputers can simulate milliseconds of protein dynamics with all-atom resolution. With the success of in vitro studies\, it is essential that we now turn our attention in vivo. While evidence that the cellular environment perturbs protein behaviors emerged over half a century ago\, we still have limited fundamental information about the effects of these cooperative cellular interactions on protein properties. The gap in knowledge is largely attributable to the transient nature of interactions in the cellular milieu and challenges associated with studying protein structure\, stability\, and dynamics in living cells. Here we leverage groundbreaking spectro-microscopy methods\, fast relaxation fluorescence imaging (FReI) and optical photothermal infrared imaging (O-PTIR) in combination with functional biochemical assays\, in vitro biophysical spectroscopy\, and numerical analysis solutions\, to characterize in-cell protein dynamics. Our work addresses the following questions: 1. What is the physiochemical code to protein folding? Do classic in vitro protein principles translate to cells? 2. Can we develop methods to visualize the spatial distribution of metabolism and associated metabolic protein structural dynamics in living cells? 3. How does thermal adaptation and acclimation by organisms change the stability\, folding\, and aggregation of proteins in differentiated tissues? Overall\, this work will lead to a greater understanding of protein homeostasis in health and disease.

SUMMARY:Performance:Crash Test Dummies
DESCRIPTION:In 2018\, 25 years after the release of their multi-Grammy nominated hit album “God Shuffled His Feet”\, The Crash Test Dummies hit the road for the first time in 20 years with an Anniversary Tour that spanned North America. The overwhelming reception led to a 30th Anniversary Tour in 2022 for their debut release “The Ghosts That Haunt Me” that touched down in the US\, UK\, Germany\, Austria\, the Netherlands\, Luxembourg\, and Canada. And the band is showing no signs of slowing down...\n\n“Touring again was not something we’d planned on\, but surprisingly – at least to me – there are lots of people who many years later\, still want to come and hear us. The folks that are coming out to see these shows tell us their stories\, some of them very funny\, some very dark and all very personal. It’s very humbling\, being in the confidence of so many people” says lead singer-songwriter Brad Roberts\, “and it has inspired us to continue to tour and make music.”\n\n2023 saw the release of a new\, original Crash Test Dummies single “Sacred Alphabet.”\n\nhttps://www.crashtestdummies.com/
