SUMMARY:Presentation:Ancient Philosophy: Klaus Corcilius (Tübingen)
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \"Practical Truth in Aristotle\"\nThis paper offers a new interpretation of Aristotle’s account of practical truth as the agreement of “true practical reasoning” with “right desire\". Four questions are posed: What is right desire? In which way can thinking that a particular thing or course of action is good be true? How can right desire and practical reasoning agree on the same object? Why does Aristotle speak of practical truth in the first place? The answers will situate Aristotle’s account of practical truth in his general teleology of the practical. \n\n The main philosophical claims are the following: (i) practical rationality\, like all rationality for Aristotle\, is fundamentally concerned with principles\; (ii) practical truth is the conscious pursuit of a particular course of action as agreeing with the pursuit of an appropriate value in a given situation as that value’s appropriate embodiment. (iii) Aristotle conceptualises this embodiment as a kind of identity. (iv) Practical truth is the best result and achievement (ergon) of episodes of practical reasoning\; however\, it is neither the essence of practical rationality\, nor otherwise a guiding concept in the architecture of Aristotle's philosophy of human affairs.”

SUMMARY:Film Screening:ASC Film Screening & Discussion. *Mama Africa—The story of Zenzile Miriam Makeba* (Women's History Month)
DESCRIPTION:Film screening followed by a panel discussion about the life of Zenzile Miriam Makeba\, a South African singer and crusader against apartheid\, with a look at her life\, career\, and activism through the lens of archival footage.\n\n*Mama Africa—The story of Zenzile Miriam Makeba*\nA film by Mika Kaurismäki\, Documentary\, South Africa (2011)\n\nSYNOPSIS\n\nMAMA AFRICA: MIRIAM MAKEBA serves as a powerful introduction to a new generation of Americans to Miriam Makeba\, South African singer and anti-apartheid activist\, the voice and the hope of Africa.\n\nMiriam Makeba was the first African musician to become a true international star. Her music - which influenced artists across the globe - always remained anchored in her traditional South African roots and conveyed strong messages against racism and poverty.\n\nMiriam Makeba was forced into a life in exile\, after staring in the 1959 documentary film “COME BACK AFRICA” which exposed the harsh realities of apartheid. She sang for John F. Kennedy and Marlon Brando\, performed with Harry Belafonte\, Nina Simone and Dizzie Gillespie\, was married to Hugh Masekela and also the radical Black Panther\, Stokely Carmichael. Her life was tumultuous but always fascinating. She stood for truth and justice\, fought for the oppressed and campaigned tirelessly against apartheid.\n\nShe died collapsing after leaving the stage at a concert in the Southern Italian town of Castel Volturno in November 2008. Makeba was 76 years old.\n\nThis documentary\, directed by Mika Kaurismäki\, traces her life and music through more than fifty years of performing. Using rare archive footage of her performances\, interviews and intimate scenes filmed over the years\, this powerful documentary expertly exposes the biography of a unique person\, a world icon. Friends and colleagues\, some who knew her since she started performing in the dance halls of South Africa (remember “Pata Pata”)\, together with her grandchildren Zenzi Monique Lee and Nelson Lumumba Lee\, allow us to learn about the remarkable journey of Miriam Makeba\, “Mama Africa”.\n\nhttps://www.miriam-makeba-movie.com/synopsis\n\nThe event is free\, please register at http://forms.gle/uwi58aAtKQjn4e246

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Linguistics Colloquium
DESCRIPTION:Cherry Meyer is an Assistant Professor and holds a joint appointment in the Departments of American Culture (AC) and Linguistics at the University of Michigan Department.\n\nTitle\n‘Exceptional’ Animates in Ojibwe: The Link Between Gender and Classifiers\n\nAbstract\nOjibwe and other Algonquian languages have grammatical gender with two values commonly called ANIMATE and INANIMATE. In Ojibwe\, gender assignment is based on semantics rather than phonology or morphology. Nouns with animate referents are assigned to the ANIMATE gender\, e.g. ikwe ‘woman’ and makwa ‘bear’\, while nouns with inanimate referents are assigned to the INANIMATE gender\, e.g. wiiyaas ‘meat’ and izaaga’igan ‘lake’. Exceptions to this generalization are found in the ANIMATE gender\, i.e. nouns with inanimate referents assigned to the ANIMATE gender\, e.g. asekaan ‘tanned hide’ and miskomin ‘raspberry’. I propose an analysis of gender assignment based on the semantics of the classifier system. Such ‘exceptional’ nouns are compatible with the semantics of one of five sortal classifiers\, illustrated by pairings of classifiers and nouns (1-5).\n\n1. /-aatig/ ‘long\, narrow\, rigid’\, i.e. stick-like / mitig ‘tree’\n\n2. /-aabiig/ ‘long\, narrow\, flexible’\, i.e. string-like / zesab ‘nettle’\n\n3. /-eg/ ‘long\, wide\, flexible’\, i.e. sheet-like / asekaan ‘tanned hide’\n\n4. /-minag/ ‘small\, round’\, i.e. berry-like / miskomin ‘raspberry’\n\n5. /-aabik/ ‘mineral’\, i.e. metal\, stone\, glass / asin ‘a stone’\n\nThe role of analogy via semantic extension\, as well as complexities arising from dialectal differences and diachronic changes are discussed.\n\nYou can also join us on Zoom: https://umich.zoom.us/j/91292768774

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:MCAIM Grad Seminar: Modeling CTL-mediated Tumor Cell Death Mechanisms and the Activity of Immune Checkpoints in Immunotherapy
DESCRIPTION:Immunotherapy has dramatically transformed the cancer treatment landscape. Of the variety of types of immunotherapies available\, immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have gained the spotlight. Although ICIs have shown promising results for some patients\, the low response rates in many cancers highlight the challenges of using immune checkpoint blockade as an effective treatment. Cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) execute their cell-killing function via two distinct mechanisms. The first process is fast-acting and perforin/granzyme-mediated\, and the second is a slower\, Fas ligand (FasL)-driven killing mechanism. There is also evidence suggesting that the preferred killing mechanism by CTLs depends on the antigenicity of tumor cells. To determine the key factors affecting responses to checkpoint blockade therapy\, we constructed an ordinary differential equation model describing in vivo tumor-immune dynamics in the presence of active or blocked PD-1/PD-L1 immune checkpoint. Specifically\, we analyzed which aspects of the tumor-immune landscape affect the response to ICIs with endpoints of tumor size and composition in the short and long term. By generating a virtual cohort with heterogeneous tumor and immune attributes\, we also simulated the therapeutic outcomes of immune checkpoint blockade in a largely diverse population. In this way\, we identified key tumor and immune characteristics that are associated with tumor elimination\, dormancy and escape. Our analysis sheds light on which fraction of a population potentially responds well to ICIs and ways to enhance therapeutic outcomes with combination\ntherapy.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Periodic points of translation surfaces
DESCRIPTION:A Veech surface is a translation surface whose (affine) automorphism group is as large as possible. While a generic point of a Veech surface equidistributes under the action of its automorphism group\, there is an exceptional finite set of points with finite orbits. These periodic points appear throughout Teichmüller dynamics\, such as in counting holomorphic sections of families of Riemann surfaces and in blocking problems on billiard tables. In this talk we first describe joint work with Zawad Chowdhury\, Samuel Everett and Destine Lee that gives an algorithm that computes the set of periodic points for a given Veech surface. We then describe work that classifies the periodic points of Prym eigenforms\, an infinite family of Veech surfaces in genera 2\, 3 and 4.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Talk by Professor Julián Casanova: Historia de España en el Siglo XX
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a talk by professor Julián Casanova Friday\, March 17th\, 4:00pm-6:00pm in the RLL Commons on the 4th floor of the MLB\, or by Zoom. The talk will be in Spanish.\n\nThe twentieth century in Spain was exceptionally varied. Many Spaniards were born during a monarchy\, that of Alfonso XIII\, lived through two dictatorships\, a Republic and a civil war\, and died with the grandson of Alfonso XIII\, Juan Carlos I\, as Head of State. The first third of the twentieth century was not the chronicle of a secular frustration foretold which of necessity was to finish up as a collective tragedy\; neither was the brief democratic experiment of the Second Republic the inevitable prologue to the civil war\; nor was the long\, drawn-out Francoist dictatorship a parenthesis which\, at the end of the day\, favoured economic development and the advent of freedom\; and the transition to democracy was never a perfect script previously written from the upper echelons of power. We historians also know that there is no\n‘normal’ model of modernisation with which Spain could be contrasted as being an anomalous exception.

SUMMARY:Film Screening:Being \"Americanish\"
DESCRIPTION:Join LSA Student Government and other sponsors in a free film screening\, Americanish (2021)\, directed and co-written by Iman Zawahry\, on Friday\, March 17th\, from 6:00-8:30 in the Hussey Room in the Michigan League. Viewers are invited into the home and lives of three marriage-aged women as they navigate the often turbulent waters of romance\, culture\, career\, and family. Americanish delves into the complexity of trying to both honor and break from cultural traditions while balancing personal values and career goals in a society that does not always accommodate both. The film highlights different layers of womanhood intersecting with cultural and societal expectations. Following the film's screening\, a panel of the director Iman Zawahry and lead actress and co-writer Aizzah Fatima will take place and have a Q&A portion. Snacks and refreshments will be provided! This event is a MESA AA&PI Heritage Month event.

SUMMARY:Performance:Prometheus. Beginnings
DESCRIPTION:Prometheus. Beginnings is a devised dance theatre work\, conceived by Tzveta Kassabova with the cast\, that takes inspiration and ideas from two plays written by the Berlin-based playwright Kevin Rittberger. The piece creates the environment in which some of the pressing questions of our time float in\, come to focus\, and interact with each other. The piece is an exploration of an entanglement of movement\, spoken word\, improvisational music score by Steve Hilmy and the evocative set of the production. Prometheus. Beginnings was originally created in the context of the conference “Diffractive World-Making – Theatre and Science Beyond the Capitalocene” and an initial version was premiered at the University of Indiana.\n \n‘Through metamorphosis I alter my form\nWhich has given rise to nothing but greed\nMay my limbs be covered in soft bark\nHairs become leaves\nArms become branches\nAll that remains is radiance. ‘ —Kevin Rittberger

SUMMARY:Performance:Sierra Hull
DESCRIPTION:Sierra Hull’s positively stellar career started early. That is\, if you consider a Grand Ole Opry debut at age ten\, called back to the famed stage a year later to perform with her hero and mentor Alison Krauss\, to be early. She played Carnegie Hall at 12\; at 13 signed with Rounder Records and issued her debut\, “Secrets\,” and garnered the first of many nominations for Mandolin Player of the Year. She played the Kennedy Center at 16 and the next year became the first bluegrass musician to receive a Presidential Scholarship at the Berklee College of Music. As a 20-year-old\, Hull played the White House. Sierra found inspiration in Krauss\, Ricky Skaggs\, and Sam Bush. And\, just as importantly\, she affirmed her own sense of identity as she continued to break new ground. “There’s a voice in the back of my head telling me to keep working\, to keep moving forward\,” Sierra says. “You have to keep progressing and introducing new things.”

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Early Astronomy in the University of Michigan Collections
DESCRIPTION:Trace how astronomy was developed\, studied\, and disseminated through the centuries\, from 1500 BCE to the Renaissance. On display is material drawn from the University of Michigan collections dealing with the history of early astronomy: manuscripts\, early printed books\, and artifacts illustrating Mesopotamian\, Greek\, Islamic\, and Western European astronomy.\n\nThis exhibit and its permanent online counterpart (https://umlib.us/earlyastronomy) are part of the Aratus Project\, which was sponsored by the National Science Foundation and led by Prof. Francesca Schironi. The core of the project has been to study Aratus’ \"Phaenomena\,\" the most important poem on stars and constellations of the Graeco-Roman ancient world\, and its exegetical tradition. Read an annotated edition and English translation of \"Phaenomena\" and its commentaries (https://aratus.classics.lsa.umich.edu/). The physical and online exhibits place this research work within its later intellectual and historical context.\n\nCurated by: John Steele\, Professor of the History of the Exact Sciences in Antiquity\, Department of Egyptology and Assyriology\, Brown University\; Francesca Schironi\, U-M Professor of Classical Studies\; Evyn Kropf\, U-M Librarian for Middle Eastern & North African Studies\; Pablo Alvarez\, U-M Curator (Special Collections Research Center).\n\nCheck Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours: https://myumi.ch/2mx44

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Humanize the Numbers
DESCRIPTION:Prison Creative Arts Project presents an exhibition of collaborative photography at the Detroit Historical Museum (5401 Woodward Ave. in Detroit)\, open now through May 21st.\n\nA public reception will be held on March 9th\, 6:00–9:00 PM\, with a panel of previous workshop participants at 7:00 PM.\n\nWe hope you will be able to see the exhibit\, and please be in touch if you have any questions.\n\nHumanize the Numbers shows the perspectives of men in Michigan prisons. The prison system regulates every part of an inmate's identity. Instead of using their name\, they are given an ID number. Visiting room photos and mug shots are tightly regulated. Personal info is recorded: height\, weight\, etc. In the process\, their humanity is denied.\n\nThis exhibit at the Detroit Historical Museum reveals the faces and stories of those in prison. It lifts up the voices of those who have been silenced by the criminal legal system. The Humanize the Numbers project gives them a freedom not normally allowed in prison. They share their stories with the world outside. By doing so\, those in prison reclaim their humanity.\n\nMuseum hours\nThursdays–Saturdays: 10:00 AM–5:00PM \nSundays: 1:00–5:00 PM

SUMMARY:Exhibition:UN/EARTH
DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:The Egalitarian Metropolis Symposium: Towards an Inclusive Recovery for Detroit
DESCRIPTION:The Egalitarian Metropolis: Towards an Inclusive Recovery for Detroit \n\nThe Great Black Migration to Detroit occurred at the height of the city’s industrial dominance\, and yet the result was a deeply divided metropolis where almost all the benefits of subsequent industrial restructuring flowed to white suburbanites and almost all the costs were borne by Black city residents. SUMMARY:Performance:Karan Casey
DESCRIPTION:Karan Casey has long been one of the most innovative\, provocative\, and imitated voices in Irish folk music. Since embarking on her solo career after a stint as lead vocalist of the legendary band Solas\, she has released six solo albums\, a duo album\, and a children's album and has appeared on more than 50 albums in total. She has toured constantly throughout North America\, Europe and Japan\, performing solo\, with her own band and with many other artists\, often from outside the realm of Irish music. Her adventurous spirit results from the varied influences--classical music\, jazz\, and American pop--that Casey has made her own since growing up amid Irish traditional music in Ballyduff Lower\, County Waterford. Karan Casey\, says the Associated Press\, has \"a voice so beautiful\, it's almost impossible to avoid falling under her spell.\" This tour features Niamh Dunne on fiddle and vocals and Seán Óg Graham on guitar.

SUMMARY:Performance:University Symphony Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:The University Symphony Orchestra\, conducted by its music director\, Kenneth Kiesler\, performs one of the most beloved works in the repertoire for orchestra\, the Second Symphony by Finnish composer\, Jan Sibelius.\nThe program also features percussion soloist James Koo\, Winner of the 2023 SMTD Concerto Competition\, playing the virtuosic and colorful Percussion Concerto by Chen Yi. The first woman in China to receive a master’s degree in composition\, Chen Yi received her doctoral degree at Columbia University and joined the faculty of the University of Missouri at Kansas City in 1998. The following year she became a United States citizen\, and\, in 2001 she received the American Academy of Arts and Letters Charles Ives Living\, a cash grant awarded with the sole requirement of full-time composing. She has written major works for the Seattle Symphony Orchestra\, Cleveland Orchestra\, and cellist Yo-Yo Ma. The concert opens with an evocative out-take from the opera Nixon in China\, The Chairman Dances\, subtitled a Foxtrot for Orchestra\, by American composer John Adams. The word “Dances” in the title is a verb\, not a noun. The music depicts Madame Mao “crashing” a presidential banquet\, hanging paper lanterns\, and performing a dance\; Chairman Mao Zedong descends from his portrait\, and the two dance a foxtrot\, going back in time together.\n\nPROGRAM\nFeaturing James Koo\, percussion\, Winner\, 2023 SMTD Concerto Competition\nJohn Adams\, The Chairman DancesChen Yi\, Percussion Concerto Sibelius\, Symphony No. 2

SUMMARY:Performance:The Travelin' McCourys
DESCRIPTION:Bluegrass for the 21st century\, with deep traditional roots\n\nFrom a source deep\, abundant\, and pure the river flows. It’s there on the map\, marking place and time. vYet\, the river changes as it remains a constant\, carving away at the edges\, making new pathways\, gaining strength as it progresses forward. The Travelin’ McCourys are that river. The McCoury brothers—Ronnie (mandolin) and Rob (banjo)—were born into the bluegrass tradition. Talk about a source abundant and pure: their father\, Del\, is among the most influential and successful musicians in the history of the genre. Years on the road with Del in the Del McCoury Band honed their knife-edge chops\, and encouraged the duo to imagine how traditional bluegrass could cut innovative pathways into 21st century music. “If you put your mind\, your skills\, and your ability to it\, I think you can make just about anything work on bluegrass instruments\,” says Ronnie. “That’s a really fun part of this—figuring the new stuff out and surprising the audience.” With fiddler Jason Carter\, bassist Alan Bartram\, and latest recruit Cody Kilby on guitar\, they assembled a group that could take what they had in their DNA\, take what traditions they learned and heard\, and push the music forward. In fact\, the band became the only group to have each of its members recognized with an International Bluegrass Music Association Award for their instrument at least once. Their concerts have become can’t-miss events\, whether headlining historic venues or as festival favorites\, drawing the love and respect of a growing fanbase craving their eclectic repertoire. \n\nPlease visit https://mutotix.umich.edu/3795/3796 for more detail.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:CCPS Exhibition. Survivors Saving Survivors: Photographing the Ukrainian Refugee Experience in Poland
DESCRIPTION:In April and June 2022\, at the invitation of JCC Krakow\, Chuck Fishman traveled to Poland to document the JCC and the Jewish community’s commitment to helping Ukrainian refugees fleeing their war-torn country. What he witnessed and captured in a series of gripping photographs is *tikkun olam*\, a central concept in Judaism that denotes activities that repair and improve the world we live in. The exhibit shifts the lens away from the horror the refugees have endured to focus instead on human goodness and how it can overcome lingering evil.\n\nIn his 45-year career\, freelance photographer Chuck Fishman has focused on social and political issues with a strong humanistic concern. His work on Jewish life in Poland\, begun in 1975\, continues to the present day. Fishman’s work has been extensively published\, exhibited\, and collected worldwide\, and has earned him prestigious World Press Photo Foundation medals four times. His photographs have appeared on the covers of *Time*\, *Life*\, *Fortune*\, *Newsweek*\, *The London Sunday Times*\, *The Economist*\, and numerous others. Fishman’s work is included in the collections of the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery\, the United Nations POLIN: The Museum of the History of Polish Jews\, and the Stanford University and New York Public Libraries\, to name a few\, as well as private and corporate collections.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at weisercenter@umich.edu.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Portraits of Feminism in Japan
DESCRIPTION:What is feminism in Japan? Rather than imagining it as a singular\, coherent object\, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity\, difference\, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts\, “feminism” in Japan can invoke sharply different associations\, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority\, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters\, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families\, workplaces\, schools\, political institutions\, and laws\, among many other contexts. Many – but certainly not all – feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects\, working toward recognition\, repair\, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\n\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Created by nine contemporary artists in Japan and the United States\, the portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of \"feminism\" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences\, needs\, and activism within Japan. This exhibit also spotlights the history of Japanese studies at the University of Michigan in conjunction with the Center for Japanese Studies' 75th anniversary celebration. \n\n“Portraits of Feminism in Japan” is open for viewing M-F 9am-4pm or by appointment. University of Michigan instructors can email LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu to request a group tour or schedule a class visit.\n\nFeatured artists:\nElaine Cromie\, JenClare B. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:PSC Brown Bag: Job Applications and Labor Market Flows
DESCRIPTION:Job applications have risen over time\, yet job-finding rates remain unchanged. Meanwhile\, separations have declined. We argue that increased applications raise the probability of a good match rather than the probability of job-finding. Using a search model with multiple applications and costly information\, we show that when applications increase\, firms invest in identifying good matches\, reducing separations. Concurrently\, increased congestion and selectivity over which offer to accept temper increases in job-finding rates. Our framework contains testable implications for changes in offers\, acceptances\, reservation wages\, applicants per vacancy\, and tenure\, objects that enable it to generate the trends in unemployment flows.\n\nJoin us in person at ISR (Thompson Street) Room 1430.\n\nOr online: Join Zoom Meeting\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/95418610585?pwd=Z0cvdkF1T0R2cG1lRDEvVmlnbVdlZz09

SUMMARY:Careers / Jobs:International Student Career Series: How to Build Your Network
DESCRIPTION:\"You can’t start networking unless you know where to begin! As an international student\, it can be intimidating when thinking about the idea of having to interact with people in the U.S. That’s totally okay because we got you covered! This workshop will give you the tools to identify and connect with contacts in addition to conducting informational interviews - opportunities that will help you expand your knowledge of what a career or company is like by learning from an employee's daily activities. Remember: Networking is about building relationships. These meetings can occur without the pressure so often present in a typical job interview but many times lead to opportunities down the road.\n\nThis session is an interactive workshop\, so you are expected to prepare by carefully reviewing our networking website to learn the basics: Review Networking Resources:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8PHpx31Amwc&t=2s\nhttps://careercenter.umich.edu/article/networking-resources\"

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Dissertation Defense: Using Mixed Hodge modules to Study Singularities
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Mixed Hodge modules have found many applications in algebraic geometry. They have been essential in the study of hypersurface singularities\, for example\, in the definition of Hodge ideals and minimal exponent. I will explain work that generalizes the results for hypersurfaces to higher codimension subvarieties. The main tool is the V-filtration of a mixed Hodge module along the subvariety Z. Our methods show that this filtration is suitably compatible with the Hodge and weight filtration of a mixed Hodge module\, and that one can use the V-filtration to compute restriction functors for mixed Hodge modules. These restriction functors are applied to the study of local cohomology and to the Fourier-Laplace transform of monodromic mixed Hodge modules.\n\nHYBRID Defense:\nSchool of Ed Building\, Room 2225\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/96660837935?pwd=R1N0aC9OSDUxZjVYQ29LWTBDa2QyUT09

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:HEP-Astro Seminar | The Snowball Chamber: Opportunities With Supercooled Water for Dark Matter\, Neutrinos\, and General Particle Detection
DESCRIPTION:The snowball chamber is analogous to the bubble and cloud chambers in that it relies on a phase transition\, but it is new to high-energy particle physics. The concept of the snowball chamber relies on supercooled water\, which can remain metastable for long time periods in a sufficiently clean and smooth container (on the level of the critical radius for nucleation). The results gleaned from the first prototype setup (20 grams) will be reviewed\, as well as plans for the future\, with an eye to future deployment of a larger (kg-scale) device underground for direct detection of dark matter WIMPs (Weakly Interacting Massive Particles)\, with a special focus on low-mass (GeV-scale) WIMPs\, capitalizing on the presence of Hydrogen\, which could potentially also lead to world-leading sensitivity to spin-dependent-proton interactions for O(1 GeV/c^2)-mass WIMPs and coherent neutrino scattering. Supercooled water also has the potential advantage of a sub-keV energy threshold for nuclear recoils\, but this remains an atmospheric chemistry prediction that must be verified by careful measurements.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Can Fiscal Externalities Be Internalized?
DESCRIPTION:Subsidies and in-kind transfers give rise to negative fiscal externalities. However\, internalizing negative fiscal externalities through taxation would undo the subsidy or in-kind transfer that caused them. Similarly\, positive fiscal externalities cannot be internalized though government subsidies. This paper describes a mechanism that transfers fiscal externalities from the government to private parties. Such transfers generate incentives within the private sector to reduce inefficiencies caused by fiscal externalities. Thus\, the paper offers a straightforward\, but powerful\, insight: transferring fiscal externalities to third parties extends the reach of the Coase Theorem to inefficiencies stemming from fiscal externalities.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:ISRMT: Improved very sparse matrix completing using an intentionally randomized \"asymmetric SVD\"
DESCRIPTION:Joint work with: Charles Bordenave (University Aix-Marseille)\nSimon Coste (Université de Paris P7\, LPSM) \n\nWe consider the matrix completion problem in the very sparse regime where\, on average\, a constant number of entries of the matrix are observed per row (or column). In this very sparse regime\, we cannot expect to have perfect recovery and the celebrated nuclear norm based matrix completion fails because the singular value decomposition (SVD) of the underlying very sparse matrix completely breaks down. \n\nWe demonstrate that it is indeed possible to reliably recover the matrix. The key idea is the use of a ``randomized asymmetric SVD'' (which we will define) to find informative singular vectors in this regime in a way that the SVD cannot. \n\nWe provide sharp theoretical analysis of the phenomenon\, including a prediction of the lower limits of statistical recovery and demonstrate the efficacy of the new method(s) using simulations.\n\nA recording of the talk can be found at https://youtu.be/nlSmfwla6L4

SUMMARY:Other:New Strategies for Carbonyl-Olefin Metathesis
DESCRIPTION:FeCl3 has been identified as an earth abundant\, environmentally friendly Lewis acid catalyst for ring-closing carbonyl-olefin metathesis. Lewis acid activation is used to promote the formation and fragmentation of oxetane intermediates\, avoiding catalytically inactive metal-oxo species and allowing for catalytic turnover. Subsequent efforts led to the discovery of interrupted carbonyl-olefin metathesis as a divergent reaction pathway that operates via oxygen atom transfer. TfOH catalyzes the formation of uniquely substituted fluorene scaffolds from readily accessible substrates. Unlike the inert metal-oxo byproducts of previously reported approaches for carbonyl-olefin metathesis\, a new ruthenium alkylidene-mediated hydrazone/oxime-olefin metathesis is developed that forms a highly reactive Ru nitride as the metal byproduct. The high reactivity of this species could be exploited to regenerate a Ru alkylidene\, potentially permitting Ru-catalyzed hydrazine/oxime-olefin metathesis as a new approach for catalytic carbonyl-olefin metathesis. \r\n \r\n \n \n \n \n \nJacob Ludwig (AbbVie)

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Special Physics Colloquium | New Paradigms in Quantum Computing: Beyond Quantum Circuits with Trapped-Ion Qubits
DESCRIPTION:If you can't join us in person\, the colloquium is available via Zoom: https://umich.zoom.us/j/94363328065 Meeting ID: 943 6332 8065\n\nTrapped ions are a leading quantum technology for quantum computation and simulation\, with the capability to solve computationally hard problems and deepen our understanding of complex quantum systems. The quantum circuit model is the central paradigm for quantum computation\, enabling the realization of various quantum algorithms by application of multiple one- and two-qubit entangling operations. However\, the typical number of entangling operations required by this model increases exponentially with the number of qubits\, making it difficult to apply to many problems. \n\nIn my presentation\, I will discuss new methods for realizing quantum gates and simulations that go beyond the quantum circuit model. I will first describe a single-step protocol for generating native\, -body interactions between trapped-ion spins\, using spin-dependent squeezing. Next\, I will present a preparation of novel phases of matter using simultaneous and reconfigurable spin-spin interactions. Lastly\, I will explore new avenues to harness the long-lived phonon modes in trapped-ion crystals for simulating complex bosonic and spin-boson models that are difficult to solve using classical methods. The presented techniques could push the performance of trapped-ion systems to solve problems that are currently beyond their reach.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:GLNT: A Random Group with Local Data
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: The Cohen--Lenstra heuristics describe the distribution of ell-torsion in class groups of quadratic fields as corresponding to the distribution of certain random p-adic matrices. These ideas have been extended to using random groups to predict the distributions of more general unramified extensions in families of number fields (see work by Boston--Bush--Hajir\, Liu--Wood\, Liu--Wood--Zureick-Brown). Via the Galois correspondence\, the distribution of unramified extensions is a specific example of counting number fields with prescribed ramification and bounded discriminant. As of yet\, no constructions of random groups have been given in the literature to predict the answers to famous number field counting conjectures such as Malle's conjecture. We construct a \"random group with local data\" bridging this gap\, and use it to describe new heuristic justifications for number field counting questions.

SUMMARY:Well-being:VIRTUAL | Women\, Connectedness\, and Self-Care
DESCRIPTION:RSVP here: https://www.cew.umich.edu/events/virtual-women-connectedness-and-self-care-2\n--------------------------------------------\n\nIn celebration of Women’s History Month\, CEW+ will feature a program focused on holistic wellness\, mindfulness\, and empowerment. Join us for a workshop offered virtually via Zoom and continue as part of a community of care throughout the month of March. All participants will receive weekly connectedness communications and an invite to return for an in-person check-in at CEW+ to celebrate a month of wellness.\n\nWe will spend time thinking about what self-care means to each of us based on identity\, social location\, and privilege to recognize the intersecting dynamics that drive this concept. We will explore how mindful connections can help foster communities of care. Drawing on Black feminist thought this workshop centers the words of the late poet Audre Lorde who said\, “Caring for myself is not self-indulgence\, it is self-preservation\, and that is an act of political warfare.” By identifying the ways that we are and are not caring for ourselves we can begin to cultivate new intentions and practices that model for our families\, students\, and colleagues why self-care is an integral part of a balanced and whole life for women.\n\nDuring the workshop\, participants will engage in small and large group discussions focused on ideas and questions from the brief readings. We will develop our own “Self-Care Bingo” boards as a culminating activity and participants will be invited to do their best to complete bingo on their board throughout the rest of the month. Participants will be invited back at the end of the month (or beginning of April) to celebrate and share their joys and challenges in community.\n\nThis workshop kicks off a month-long series of activities related to practicing self-care and cultivating communities of care in the process. Each week participants will receive an email with resources\, tips\, and tools for incorporating self-care into their daily lives. The email will help to continue the conversation begun in the workshop and help to strengthen connections between participants and CEW+.
