Countering Infrastructures of Impunity with Performance and Creative Arts DESCRIPTION:Drawing on her forthcoming book\, *Infrastructures of Impunity*\, Elizabeth F. Drexler argues that the creation and persistence of impunity for the perpetrators of the Cold War Indonesian genocide (1965-66) is not only a legal status but also a cultural and social process. Impunity for the initial killings and for subsequent acts of political violence has many elements: bureaucratic\, military\, legal\, political\, educational\, and affective. Although these elements do not always work at once—at times\, some are dormant while others are ascendant—taken together\, all elements can be described as a unified entity\, a dynamic infrastructure whose existence explains and accounts for the persistence of impunity. For instance\, truth-telling\, a first step in many responses to state violence\, did not undermine the infrastructure but instead bent to it. Creative and artistic responses to revelations about the past\, however\, have begun to undermine the infrastructure by countering its temporality\, affect\, social stigmatization and demonstrating its contingency and specific actions\, policies and processes that would begin to dismantle it.\n \nELIZABETH F. It’s even come to be regarded as an urgent public health concern. However\, until recently\, philosophers have had little to say about it — including those working in phenomenological psychopathology\, which investigates experiential disturbances of an individual’s relation to themselves\, others\, and the wider world. In this talk\, I consider the importance of loneliness for psychopathology and beyond. Building on work with Lucy Osler and Tom Roberts\, I explore the experiential character of loneliness\, with a specific emphasis on how “social goods” are experienced as absent in ways that involve a diminished sense of agency and recognition. I consider three case studies — depression\, anorexia\, and autism — and argue for the need to attend to psychopathology-specific expressions of loneliness\, agency\, and (non-)recognition. I also briefly consider the broader significance of this topic\, including loneliness and mental health in the workplace. In this talk I will discuss solutions to the KP equation whose underlying algebraic curves undergo tropical degenerations. In these cases\, Riemann's theta function becomes a finite exponential sum that is supported on a Delaunay polytope. I will introduce the Hirota variety which parametrizes all KP solutions arising from such a sum and has a nice combinatorial description based on the Delaunay polytope. I will then discuss a special case\, studying the Hirota variety of a rational nodal curve. Of particular interest is an irreducible subvariety that is the image of a parameterization map. Proving that this is a component of the Hirota variety entails solving a weak Schottky problem for rational nodal curves. Proxy records of past hydroclimate can provide critical information about the dynamical drivers of regional precipitation variability\, and contribute to improved climate projections\, yet the existing data is sparse in space and time. Filling these gaps can contribute to evaluation and improvement of climate models\, by helping to: 1) Constrain the magnitude and timing of precipitation change in response to external forcings and internal ocean-atmosphere variability \, 2) Evaluate the spatial pattern of regional precipitation changes in models\, and 3) Provide robust data for proxy-model comparison studies\, which may help reveal model biases. Speleothems are ideally suited archives of past hydroclimate due to their precise U-Th based age models and the multiple hydrologically sensitive proxies they contain. In this talk\, I will present multi-proxy hydroclimate records from our field sites in Mexico\, Laos\, and Vietnam\, and discuss how we combine cave monitoring\, proxy system modeling\, instrumental climate data\, and isotope-enabled climate model output to investigate the dynamics of hydroclimate variability on interannual to orbital timescales. His research interests are in natural language processing and machine learning.\n\nTITLE\nInductive General Grammar\n\nABSTRACT\nGeneral-linguistic datasets that have become available in recent years promise to enable new progress toward a theory of general grammar. A barrier to success is the incompatibility between the inductive\, externalist approach that is natural for exploiting the datasets and the deductive\, mentalist philosophy that is currently dominant within linguistics. I argue that the externalist philosophy is viable and that there are reasons to consider it preferable. I argue that the mainstream approach is in some cases unnecessarily concerned with psychological reality\, and in other cases too quick to reject required subtheories on the grounds that they belong to “language processing” rather than linguistics\, with the result that current grammars give systematically inaccurate answers to questions of the linguistic status of sentences. Death threats and assassinations\, politically motivated sectarian violence\, rampant corruption\, and de-Ba’athification policies only further destabilized an educational system already heaving under the devastation of wars\, authoritarian regimes\, and harsh economic sanctions.\n\nThis exhibit invites solidarity with the academics targeted\, but also deeper connection with their experiences and the richness of Iraqi academic life through their written legacies and the testimonies of surviving academics\, many of whom were driven into exile.\n\nThis exhibit in the north lobby is available during Hatcher Library hours (https://myumi.ch/p75dd).\n\nA companion online exhibit\, Tracing Iraqi Artists: From Shadow to Light (https://myumi.ch/n7xre)\, explores modern Iraqi struggle and resistance through contemporary visual art and connection to Iraqi artists and educators. Throughout the European Renaissance (1300-1700)\, many book illustrations were exclusively ornamental\, while others focused on enhancing the meaning of the text. However\, as the pages on display attest\, all these illustrations share a common ground: they reveal the aesthetic and intellectual fashions first proposed by Italian artists of the 1400s\, who were strongly committed to the recovery of the past of classical antiquity.\n\nThe word “Illumination\,” from the Latin illuminare\, “to enlighten or to illuminate\,” refers to the embellishment of a manuscript or early printed book with luminous colors\, notably gold and silver. This illumination was prominent in the frontispiece\, or first page of text\, which included the decoration of its borders and initial letter\, and even miniatures\, that is\, scenes with an independent narrative. Death threats and assassinations\, politically motivated sectarian violence\, rampant corruption\, and de-Ba’athification policies only further destabilized an educational system already heaving under the devastation of wars\, authoritarian regimes\, and harsh economic sanctions.\n\nThis exhibit invites solidarity with the academics targeted\, but also deeper connection with their experiences and the richness of Iraqi academic life through their written legacies and the testimonies of surviving academics\, many of whom were driven into exile.\n\nThis exhibit in the north lobby is available during Hatcher Library hours (https://myumi.ch/p75dd).\n\nA companion online exhibit\, Tracing Iraqi Artists: From Shadow to Light (https://myumi.ch/n7xre)\, explores modern Iraqi struggle and resistance through contemporary visual art and connection to Iraqi artists and educators. Throughout the European Renaissance (1300-1700)\, many book illustrations were exclusively ornamental\, while others focused on enhancing the meaning of the text. However\, as the pages on display attest\, all these illustrations share a common ground: they reveal the aesthetic and intellectual fashions first proposed by Italian artists of the 1400s\, who were strongly committed to the recovery of the past of classical antiquity.\n\nThe word “Illumination\,” from the Latin illuminare\, “to enlighten or to illuminate\,” refers to the embellishment of a manuscript or early printed book with luminous colors\, notably gold and silver. This illumination was prominent in the frontispiece\, or first page of text\, which included the decoration of its borders and initial letter\, and even miniatures\, that is\, scenes with an independent narrative. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. In the realm of biological macromolecules such as proteins and nucleic acids\, form determines function\, so visualizing the three-dimensional structures of molecules is key in researching the ‘tiny’ macromolecules that perform vital functions in our cells. In Biophysics 421\, under the guidance of Markos Koutmos\, Assistant Professor of Biophysics & Chemistry\, and Liz Tidwell\, PhD candidate in Biophysics\, students created models with digital modeling software and brought them to life via 3D printing. This exhibit showcases the 3D printed molecules\, scaled up to better reveal the structures that inform\, make\, break\, modify\, and move within the body. In 2022\, she opened her first one-woman show at the prominent Sebastian Gladstone Gallery. Most recently\, her work has been chosen for inclusion as part of L.A.’s Hammer Museum Biennial\, which runs concurrently with her exhibition Harbingers of Dreams in the Institute for the Humanities Gallery.\n\nTolliver refers to her process as “creative recycling”: forging found and thrifted materials\, and repurposing them. These frenetic bundles of coils\, adornments\, wires\, and loose ends express the artist’s feelings\, perspectives\, and everyday way of living.\n\nEarlier works of the artist are on a smaller scale and doll-like. They are intimate\, imaginative references to Tolliver’s own girlhood in a world lacking adequate or authentic representations of Black life.\n\nTolliver’s more recent figurative assemblages are life-size\, larger-than-life\, looming. They command space and celebrate it. There is an inherent connection between these sculptures and the long-established history of African American yard art\, where plants\, statuary\, and artistic creations communicate themes of personal space\, freedom of expression\, and dreams of independence. Tolliver’s bold visual choices and material combinations are refusals of outside value judgments and hierarchies.\n\nWhen visiting artist Teresa Tolliver's home studio\, one expects the figures will spring to life\, otherworldly. They seem to gather and congregate. There are no distractions from the outside\, save the light coming through the window. Through subtle details like molding\, furniture\, and drawers inspired by Tolliver’s own domestic space\, Harbingers of Dreams attempts to capture the resplendent and spiritual nature of such a visit\, with the opportunity to sit among the artist’s creations.\n\nTolliver’s figurative sculptures appear as embodiments of the city of L.A. and its diverse communities and neighborhoods. They are assemblages of disparate influences\, esthetics\, and materials: prefab\, handmade\, urban\, nostalgic\, opulent\, functional\, garish\, and celestial. A visual cacophony of colors\, influences\, designs\, and forms\, each figure beckons us towards futures in the making.\n\nTeresa Tolliver is the Paula and Edwin Sidman Fellow in the Arts at the Institute for the Humanities. It centers on the titular “manga map”\, a rare Japanese travel map of Japan (ca. 1934) that is densely packed with manga illustrations detailing local folklore\, history\, architecture\, flora/fauna\, and more. The exhibit also includes works of Japanese art and cartography in order to consider the dichotomy between artistry and geographic depiction\, and how that plays with the definition of a “map.”\n\nAlongside the exhibit\, the manga map is also part of a new digital humanities preservation project at the library using the online crowd-sourcing platform Zooniverse\, where the map will be transcribed/translated and made into a fully interactive digital map. Death threats and assassinations\, politically motivated sectarian violence\, rampant corruption\, and de-Ba’athification policies only further destabilized an educational system already heaving under the devastation of wars\, authoritarian regimes\, and harsh economic sanctions.\n\nThis exhibit invites solidarity with the academics targeted\, but also deeper connection with their experiences and the richness of Iraqi academic life through their written legacies and the testimonies of surviving academics\, many of whom were driven into exile.\n\nThis exhibit in the north lobby is available during Hatcher Library hours (https://myumi.ch/p75dd).\n\nA companion online exhibit\, Tracing Iraqi Artists: From Shadow to Light (https://myumi.ch/n7xre)\, explores modern Iraqi struggle and resistance through contemporary visual art and connection to Iraqi artists and educators. Throughout the European Renaissance (1300-1700)\, many book illustrations were exclusively ornamental\, while others focused on enhancing the meaning of the text. However\, as the pages on display attest\, all these illustrations share a common ground: they reveal the aesthetic and intellectual fashions first proposed by Italian artists of the 1400s\, who were strongly committed to the recovery of the past of classical antiquity.\n\nThe word “Illumination\,” from the Latin illuminare\, “to enlighten or to illuminate\,” refers to the embellishment of a manuscript or early printed book with luminous colors\, notably gold and silver. This illumination was prominent in the frontispiece\, or first page of text\, which included the decoration of its borders and initial letter\, and even miniatures\, that is\, scenes with an independent narrative. On view at Lane Hall as part of U-M Arts Initiative’s themed semester on Arts & Resistance\, “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” critiques the patriarchal paradigms of the STEM field by highlighting the history of women inventors. This exhibition brings conceptual invention in fine art and performance to the disciplines of information technology\, robotics\, and engineering. Buckius creates “technoffsprings”: complex machines that weave together the history of inventions related to the gendered labor of women\, especially regarding women’s social roles as caregivers and subjects of care themselves. \nTrained as an engineer and an artist\, Buckius’ machines are intentionally complex\, layered\, and illogical or absurdly logical. In the nature of women’s caregiving\, they teeter between order and chaos. Her “digital tinkerings” tell epic tales of motherhood\, technology\, female bodies\, and commerce—both personal and externalized through women’s inventions and early forays that bridged caregiving and commerce. Buckius' work proposes improvisation as a form of absurdist resistance to\, and alternative to\, patriarchal\, capitalist\, production-based\, and seemingly rational\, useful\, logical systems. \n“!!!techn010ffspring!!!” is open for viewing M-F\, 9am-4pm or by appointment. Football Culture\, Politics\, and Economics in the Middle East and North Africa DESCRIPTION:Football has been played in the MENA region since the 19th century and has been successively instrumentalized by colonialists\, anti-colonialists\, nationalists\, internationalists\, capitalists\, socialists and authoritarians. Because the outside world is unfamiliar with the historical role of football in the region\, it comes as a surprise that Qatar might feel competent to host a World Cup\, or that Saudi Arabia might harbor the ambition to create a globally competitive national league. In this talk I aim to place these developments in their broader context\, and to frame them using two theses. First\, football interest is inherently local – stemming from rivalries which can often be traced back more than a century. Second\, football economics is inherently global\, since playing talent migrates to where it is most highly valued. This framing carries some implications for the future development of football in the MENA region\, and the political tensions that this may create.\n \n Stefan Szymanski is an economist who studies sports. He is currently a Professor of Sport Management in the School of Kinesiology\, University of Michigan. He has published widely on sports topics in peer-reviewed economics journals and has written a dozen books. Neutrinoless double beta decay\, an ultra-rare decay that will occur if and only if the neutrino and antineutrino are the same particle\, may be one of the best probes for these questions. But since the half-life is greater than 10^26 years (compared to the age of the universe at 10^10 years)\, experiments must look for incredibly rare interactions in the most radio-pure environment ever constructed. One of the leaders for the next generation in the field is nEXO\, a 5 ton experiment that will probe half-lives beyond 10^28 years. This talk will describe how nEXO will tackle this gargantuan task. Microfinance has been proposed as a vehicle for economic growth\, yet recent evidence has shown that microfinance has not achieved the transformative effects that were initially hypothesized. Using a series of field experiments\, we explore whether principles from psychology and economics can be employed to improve lending models for smallholder dairy farmers in Kenya. The first experiment studies the borrower side of the problem\, focusing on how the endowment effect interacts with collateral requirements to influence demand for loans. The second experiment examines the lender side\, exploring how to optimize financial contracts to increase take-up while managing default risk.\n\nKevin Carney is an Assistant Professor at the University of Michigan's Department of Economics\, studying development and behavioral economics. His research uses field experiments to answer policy questions in developing countries\, spanning a broad range of topics including household finance\, health economics\, and political economy. Haitian journalist Roberson Alphonse will share his observations on the Haitian tragedy.\n \n Roberson Alphonse is head of national news at le Nouvelliste\, Haiti’s oldest and largest daily newspaper\, where he has covered topics including the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake\, the mismanagement of international aid\, gang violence\, and the introduction of cholera to Haiti by UN Nepalese peacekeepers. Alphonse is also the director of information at Radio Magik9\, where he hosts a popular daily program. He survived an assassination attempt in October of 2022 and was able to flee to Miami. Willard Lecture DESCRIPTION:TITLE: Ionic Liquids and GUMBOS: A Materials Approach to Analytical Chemistryach to Analytical Chemistry\n\nABSTRACT: In recent years\, much of my research has focused in the general area of analytical applications of ionic liquids where ionic liquids are defined as organic salts whose melting points are below 100 °C. The unique and tunable properties of ionic liquids have garnered much attention\, primarily because of their low melting points\, ease of syntheses\, and unique solvation properties. However\, ionic liquids whose melting points are above room temperature are solid phase materials and are often described as frozen ionic liquids. My research over the past few years has involved the application of ionic liquids in both the liquid and solid phase. In regard to solid phase ionic liquids\, my research has demonstrated the unique properties of solid phase organic salts with the unique tunability of ionic liquids. In describing these materials\, we have coined the acronym\, GUMBOS\, i.e. a group of uniform materials based on organic salts. We have also designated such materials as having the expanded melting point range of 25 °C to 250 °C. Since these materials have similar tunability to ionic liquids\, they can best be described as designer solid phase materials. In this talk\, I will describe my recent studies using ionic liquids and GUMBOS. The unique properties and applications of nanomaterials derived from GUMBOS\, i.e. nanoGUMBOS\, will also be highlighted. We note that in combining the distinct tunability of ionic liquids with the well-documented applications of nanoparticles\, we have engineered a new class of nanomaterials with wide general applicability. In 2022\, she opened her first one-woman show at the prominent Sebastian Gladstone Gallery. Most recently\, her work has been chosen for inclusion as part of L.A.’s Hammer Museum Biennial\, which runs concurrently with her exhibition Harbingers of Dreams in the Institute for the Humanities Gallery.\n\nTolliver refers to her process as “creative recycling”: forging found and thrifted materials\, and repurposing them. These frenetic bundles of coils\, adornments\, wires\, and loose ends express the artist’s feelings\, perspectives\, and everyday way of living.\n\nEarlier works of the artist are on a smaller scale and doll-like. They are intimate\, imaginative references to Tolliver’s own girlhood in a world lacking adequate or authentic representations of Black life.\n\nTolliver’s more recent figurative assemblages are life-size\, larger-than-life\, looming. They command space and celebrate it. There is an inherent connection between these sculptures and the long-established history of African American yard art\, where plants\, statuary\, and artistic creations communicate themes of personal space\, freedom of expression\, and dreams of independence. Tolliver’s bold visual choices and material combinations are refusals of outside value judgments and hierarchies.\n\nWhen visiting artist Teresa Tolliver's home studio\, one expects the figures will spring to life\, otherworldly. They seem to gather and congregate. There are no distractions from the outside\, save the light coming through the window. Through subtle details like molding\, furniture\, and drawers inspired by Tolliver’s own domestic space\, Harbingers of Dreams attempts to capture the resplendent and spiritual nature of such a visit\, with the opportunity to sit among the artist’s creations.\n\nTolliver’s figurative sculptures appear as embodiments of the city of L.A. and its diverse communities and neighborhoods. They are assemblages of disparate influences\, esthetics\, and materials: prefab\, handmade\, urban\, nostalgic\, opulent\, functional\, garish\, and celestial. It centers on the titular “manga map”\, a rare Japanese travel map of Japan (ca. 1934) that is densely packed with manga illustrations detailing local folklore\, history\, architecture\, flora/fauna\, and more. The exhibit also includes works of Japanese art and cartography in order to consider the dichotomy between artistry and geographic depiction\, and how that plays with the definition of a “map.”\n\nAlongside the exhibit\, the manga map is also part of a new digital humanities preservation project at the library using the online crowd-sourcing platform Zooniverse\, where the map will be transcribed/translated and made into a fully interactive digital map.
