SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Interdisciplinary Workshop in Race\, Ethnicity and Politics
DESCRIPTION:Racial and ethnic identities play a key role in shaping behaviors\, attitudes\, institutions and social structures. As such\, scholars across disciplines have been devoted to investigating how race and ethnicity feature in every aspect of social and political life. The purpose of I-REP (Interdisciplinary Workshop in Race\, Ethnicity and Politics) is to provide a space for scholars whose research centers race\, ethnicity and politics across a number of fields to receive critical feedback on the early stages of their work (especially graduate students)\, build community with other researchers who share similar interests and offer an opportunity for participants to collaborate on a joint research project within the working group.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture - Kristin Bergmann\, MIT
DESCRIPTION:With this talk\, I explore pre-Cenozoic glaciations to answer the following questions: \"What is the record of ice volume and extent through time\, and can this be reconciled with the oxygen isotope record?\". Utilizing carbonate-clumped isotope thermometry and integrating observations from the geologic record\, I will first examine the end-Ordovician glaciation—a test case that exhibits both similarities to and differences from Cenozoic glaciation. Prior to glaciation\, a long-term gradual cooling trend is mirrored by Ordovician radiation in biological diversity\, consistent with temperature-dependent oxygen solubility and metabolism as primary controls. Evidence for significant ice growth is constrained to less than 2 Myr of the Hirnantian Stage\, underscoring the high sensitivity of ice growth to pCO₂ and temperature. Our independent estimates for ice volume\, area\, and sea-level change during the Hirnantian glacial maximum are internally consistent and comparable to those of the Last Glacial Maximum. In addition to our work documenting cooling in the lead-up to the end-Ordovician Hirnantian glaciation\, our targeted geographic studies have also allowed us to reconstruct progressive and protracted cooling before the Sturtian Snowball Earth glaciation and the Late Paleozoic Ice Age. These three case studies suggest that a cool\, low pCO₂ climate is a prerequisite for glaciation\, even Snowball Earth\, and highlight the importance of identifying and constraining meteoric alteration associated with large amplitude sea level change before interpreting isotope records. The implications of these results extend to refining current paleoclimate models\, especially in understanding transitions from greenhouse to icehouse conditions.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Engendering Respectful Communities - AY24 - 25 Workshops
DESCRIPTION:Engendering Respectful Communities (ERC) is a one session workshop that engages graduate students in meaningful dialogue about various forms of sexual misconduct they may encounter in both professional and social spaces\, and provides resources for intervention or support in such circumstances.\n\nThe primary goal of the workshop is to address complexities experienced by graduate students as they engage in bystander intervention\, so that participants gain an increase in awareness of barriers to action and familiarity with strategic planning to overcome them. The workshop also introduces participants to on-campus resources and provides knowledge on how sexual misconduct can unfold in graduate-specific settings.\nThe ERC workshop uses small-group circles intended to promote active reflection and space to build community. The procedure of circles is introduced at the beginning of the workshop in order to help participants get used to the process\, which they do through a circle for introductions and value-sharing for the workshop space. These circles depict various\, realistic scenarios related to sexual misconduct within the graduate community. The circle process allows circle members to process the monologues\, reflect on complexities with identity and power dynamics within them\, name potential barriers to intervention\, and think of various ways in which they might respond if faced with similar situations. The circles provide a way to foster collective building of ideas\, where participants learn from one another and all input is equally valued. Participants are encouraged to share but can always pass if desired\, creating an environment where participation is open but not forced. Due to the participatory nature of the workshop\, if you are to arrive more than 20 minutes late\, we will ask you to re-register for another workshop session. If you have any questions about or concerns with taking this workshop\, or are in need of an exemption\, please contact jhippe@umich.edu or fill out this form. We know some students come to campus having already experienced harm. If you have circumstances that make completing this course challenging\, please reach out to the GROPWE team. SAPAC GROWE provides exemptions to the ERC workshop (where requirements are set in place) on a case by case basis. The Program Manager will communicate with students requesting exemptions via email and/or meet with students via zoom meetings to discuss their need for exemptions and provide any relevant and necessary resources.

SUMMARY:Ceremony / Service:Health Equity Gala
DESCRIPTION:The University of Michigan’s chapter of Partners in Health Engage is proud to host the inaugural Health Equity Gala\, an evening dedicated to advancing awareness and collaboration in the fight for global health justice. As a student-led chapter of the internationally renowned Partners in Health organization\, we are committed to advocating for equitable healthcare solutions\, amplifying marginalized voices\, and inspiring systemic change. This gala stems from a rich history of grassroots movements that recognize healthcare as a human right\, not a privilege. Founded on the belief that every individual deserves access to quality healthcare regardless of socioeconomic status\, our chapter has consistently worked to uphold this vision through advocacy\, education\, and service. The gala represents a new chapter in our mission: uniting campus organizations and community members around the shared goal of addressing critical global and public health challenges. The Health Equity Gala serves as a platform to spotlight the disparities in healthcare access\, particularly in the context of an evolving political landscape where conservative policies may threaten progress in public health equity. By bringing together a diverse coalition of public health and global health organizations on campus\, we aim to foster dialogue\, share resources\, and build actionable strategies to combat these disparities. We invite you to join us in celebrating the power of collective action and the potential for transformative change. Together\, we can advocate for a more equitable world and ensure that health is prioritized as a universal human right. SUMMARY:Performance:Joy Clark
DESCRIPTION:Louisiana born-and-raised singer-songwriter and guitarist Joy Clark is charting her own path with her debut album “Tell it to the Wind.” As the youngest of five children born into a tight knit\, deeply religious family just outside of New Orleans\, her release is both a declaration of her independence and a love letter to the traditions that shaped her.\n\nJoy’s songcraft\, paired with sophisticated progressions\, and themes of freedom\, love and self-acceptance gained her notice on the national folk and Americana scenes just a few years ago with appearances at Americanafest. Joy teamed up with one of her musical heroes\, 4x Grammy-nominated Margaret Becker\, to make her debut album. \"Tell it to the Wind\" marks Clark’s arrival on the national stage as a proud\, queer\, Black woman blending the social consciousness of folk\, the rhythms of Southeast Louisiana\, and the soul-centered music she grew up with.

SUMMARY:Performance:The Charcuterie Board Show
DESCRIPTION:Charcuterie Board is similar to RCP's Evening of Scenes\, but with a stronger emphasis on serious\, thought-provoking pieces that explore a range of themes. While some scenes are student-written\, the majority are drawn from various forms of media that have inspired our directors and performers\, allowing them to bring compelling narratives to life on stage. Each story performed on stage serves as a unique ingredient on this metaphorical charcuterie board\, offering the audience a carefully curated selection of moments—some sharp with tension\, others rich with emotion\, and some subtly profound. Just like a well-balanced board\, every scene contributes something distinct\, creating an experience that is both diverse and immersive\, leaving the audience with a taste of many different perspectives and storytelling styles.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Multiracial Families: Increasing Rapidly
DESCRIPTION:This digital exhibit in the Shapiro Lobby showcases research about and narratives from people across the globe who are part of mixed race families.\n\nIn 1967\, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in the Loving v. Virginia case that marriage across racial lines was legal throughout the country. Intermarriage has increased steadily since then: one in five U.S. newlyweds (19%) were married to a person of a different race or ethnicity in 2019\, a more than sixfold increase from 3% in 1967 (Pew Research Center\, 2022).

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Prison\, a Prisoner\, and a Prison Guard
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a multimedia exploration of the impact of prisons on countries and communities across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region through the lens of “prison art.” The exhibit delves into the dynamic interplay between incarceration and creative expression to make sense of carceral systems.\n\nBy presenting prison art from various countries in the MENA region\, including Algeria\, Egypt\, Iran\, Iraq\, Lebanon\, Palestine\, Sudan\, Syria\, and Yemen\, this exhibit unfolds as a “journey” into the prison system and demonstrates the ways in which art can be a tool of expression and reconciliation for survivors\, detainees’ families\, and society at large. It promotes drawing parallels between the prison experience in the region and worldwide\, highlights the intentionality of carceral systems\, and expands the conversation to include prison-impacted communities. Viewers are invited to navigate the cross-generational\, human experiences of imprisonment often obscured behind prison walls and within individuals.\n\nCurated by Sumaya Tabbah and Susan Aboeid of The Ḥafathah Collective\, this traveling exhibit was organized by U-M Students Organize for Syria (SOS) in partnership with U-M Library and with support from the U-M Arts Initiative.\n\nPlan to attend the related discussion\, \"Art\, Justice\, and Carcerality: The Role of Creative Expression in the Pursuit of Justice\,\" on February 6.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit \"Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World: Interracial Identity in the U.S. and Around the World — What Research and Mixed Race People Tell Us\" is an exploration into the library's collections about the diversity of mixed race heritage. Through research\, narratives\, demographic data\, and a variety of visual and published materials\, explore multifaceted aspects of mixed race heritage with insights from many perspectives.\n\nThe 2020 U.S. Census illuminated a 276 percent increase in individuals who identify as \"two or more races\" since 2010. In recognition of the growing numbers of mixed race-identifying people at the University of Michigan\, throughout the country\, and across the globe\, we're excited to unveil this new exhibit — a unique exploration of changing demographics and intersectional identities.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:RAW Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:“RAW” is a 2024 printmaking portfolio featuring 25 15”x20” works on paper by a diverse group of primarily student artists\, organized by Professor Endi Poskovic of the Stamps Printmedia program. The hand-pulled prints in the set\, which has never been exhibited before\, span media from colorful laser cut woodblock prints\, to lithography\, to copper plate etching. The newly formed Stamps Student-led Exhibitions Committee (SEC) will curate and rotate selections of these prints in alignment with the portfolio’s theme—where time and effort transform raw potential.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Bibliophile and the Library: Private-Press Books from the Collection of Bill Heidrich
DESCRIPTION:View beautifully illustrated books that stand as remarkable testaments to the work of twentieth-century small private presses\, which\, in contrast to the trend of mass commercialization\, produced limited editions that celebrated the uniqueness of manual craftsmanship. Features such as exquisite typeface design\, letterpress printing\, handmade paper\, traditional illustration techniques like woodcut and engraving\, and the inclusion of original art by renowned artists highlight the presses' dedication to artistry and detail.\n\nThe display opens with an edition of \"The Works of Geoffrey Chaucer\,\" published in 1896 by William Morris at his Kelmscott Press\, a pivotal press that greatly influenced the development of the private press movement as a means of preserving and revitalizing the fine printing and art traditions of the past. Additionally\, the exhibit includes some examples of artist’s proofs\, offering a glimpse into the intricate creative process behind these exceptional works.\n\nThese books are on loan from the collection of Bill Heidrich\, a long-time supporter of the University of Michigan Library.

SUMMARY:Other:Leaves Under the Lens
DESCRIPTION:The leaf surface is a dynamic landscape where tiny\, specialized structures help plants interact with the world around them. Let’s bring this world into view! Join us for an exhibit that highlights the complex and often beautiful anatomy of leaves from the Matthaei collection. Plants throughout the conservatory will be paired with microscope photographs and micro-CT scans that illustrate the otherwise invisible structures that protect leaves from chewing insects\, absorb (or repel!) water\, and even recruit “bodyguards”. You won’t look at leaves the same way again! \n\nThis project is a collaboration between MBGNA and the Weber and Vasconcelos labs in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology\, led by PhD student Rosemary Glos.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Welcome. Make Yourself At Home.\n \nA Gathering brings together the newest works of art to enter UMMA’s collection — many on display here for the first time. \n \nAs a free\, public museum\, UMMA staff takes care of art for the benefit of the community and society at large. The works on view in this exhibition\, all brought into the Museum between 2019 and the present\, shows how institutions like UMMA are becoming more permeable to societal challenges\, and more nimble in responding to them in service to all in their communities. In this exhibition you will find works that reflect on how global migrations\, race\, gender\, and ecological change shape the way we engage with the world and inform our visions for the future.\n \nThis collection of artistic engagements with issues give us tools to envision who we want to be as individuals\, as a museum\, and as a society\, connected to one another across space and experience.\n \nSo gather here to take in these latest works of art brought here for you. Gather here to be engulfed in their forms and meanings\, to discuss their takes\, to learn\, to disagree. Gather to relax\, make a friend\, drink a coffee\, finish the daily Wordle. Gather to feel full\, to be moved and inspired by all the possible imaginations of what is yet to come.\n \nCurated by Félix Zamora Gómez Irving Stenn\, Jr. Fellow in Public Humanities & Museum Pedagogy\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Certain absences are so stressed\, so ornate\, so planned\, they call attention to themselves\; arrest us with intentionality and purpose\, like neighborhoods that are defined by the population held away from them.” \n \n— Toni Morrison\n\nLead support for Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the U-M Arts Initiative\, and the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Michelle Hinojosa: Logcabins
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery commissioned Michelle Hinojosa (MFA\, 2023) to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the Gallery. Hinojosa has created log cabin quilts to adorn the columns in front of Stamps Gallery. The log cabin quilts traditionally represent the warm hearth at the center of a home. This installation reflects on the interplay between home\, placemaking\, labor\, and intergenerational memories of migration. Rather than quilting cotton designed to softly embrace the body\, these quilts are sewn from outdoor grade\, UV-resistant polyester. The quilt is an ode to Hinojosa’s grandmother who illegally crossed the US/Mexico border holding her babies and her quilts. As she and her family drove across the United States to work in the fields of the Salinas Valley\, the quilts offered a safe space for her and her family. Hinojosa celebrates their resilience to her grandmother and elders while also drawing attention to precarity and violence experienced by refugees and migrants crossing the US-Mexico border in our present today.\nArtist’s bio:\nMichelle Inez Hinojosa is an artist\, educator\, and researcher whose work is informed by Indigenous and Latine/x/a/o studies. Born and raised in Texas\, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in both drawing and painting and art education with a minor in art history at the University of North Texas. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. She works with quilting\, bead weaving\, embroidery\, jewelry\, transparent film installations\, painting\, ceramics\, and sculpture to honor and explore the history of migration in her family and humanize the current discourse around migration still occurring at the southern border. Alongside her artwork she maintains a writing practice to re-story\, re-make\, and re-claim the often subordinated narratives of Latinx\, Chicanx\, Mexican\, and Texican peoples. \n\nRecently\, Hinojosa was named an inaugural Creative Careers Artist in Residence at the University of Michigan\, she has also attended residencies at Mildred's Lane (Pennsylvania)\, Anderson Ranch Art Center (Aspen\, CO) and The Cedars Union (Dallas\, TX).

DESCRIPTION:Join us on World Water Day on a walk to gain perspective and build community. BLUE Missions is dedicated to alleviating the water and sanitation crisis and the Walk for Water is one way in which we are raising awareness for this issue. BLUE will be hosting an event for community members to walk the average distance women and children in the Dominican Republic have to walk daily to collect water. The distance is only 3 kilometers but is often in very mountainous regions and traversed while carrying gallons of water. This journey can take hours out of their day and often conflicts with work and school. Along with our walk\, we will be sharing how we can reduce our water footprint and be more water conscious in everyday life and engaging in fun outdoor activities. We hope to see you there!!

SUMMARY:Film Screening:Film with Live Music: Prokofiev’s Alexander Nevsky
DESCRIPTION:Although known more for his ballet music\, symphonies\, and concertos\, Sergei Prokofiev wrote several film scores: Lieutenant Kijé\, The Queen of Spades\, and his third score\, Alexander Nevsky. The 1938 Soviet historical drama\, directed by Sergei Eisenstein during the Stalinist era\, was the first of his dramatic films to use sound\, and it depicts the attempted invasion of Novgorod in the 13th century by the Knights of the Holy Roman Empire and their subsequent defeat by Prince Alexander\, aka Alexander Nevsky.\n\nThe film and music were a true collaboration in that some of the film was shot to Prokofiev’s music and some of Prokofiev’s music was composed to Eisenstein’s footage. A year after the film’s premiere\, Prokofiev arranged the film score as a cantata\, which is more frequently performed today. The cantata was first performed at UMS at the 1946 May Festival\, less than a decade after its premiere\, and most recently as part of the 1991 May Festival. The UMS Choral Union and the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra perform the full score for the first time\, presented alongside the original film.\n\nFeatured Artists bringing the film to life:\nUMS Choral Union\nAnn Arbor Symphony Orchestra\nScott Hanoian\, conductor\nMeredith Arwady\, contralto

SUMMARY:Performance:Martha Wainwright
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate the 20th anniversary of her seminal eponymous debut studio album\, Martha Wainwright announces the 20th Anniversary Tour\, hitting North America in the Spring of 2025. \n\n“20 years ago my life as an artist took shape when my first record was released. In many ways that record defined me\, as well as launched me into a now over 20 year long career that has made me who I am. It was after 10 years of playing in bars\, making cassettes and EPs to sell at my shows\, singing backup for my brother Rufus\, falling in love and out of love and in again\, practicing\, writing\, singing until I could barely sing anymore\, partying\, walking for hours and hours\, crying and laughing with friends\, playing with musicians and listening to great artists working with my ex-husband in the studio for 2 years that created this first record. \n\nLabels wouldn't sign me when I started and I had to craft\, with the help of many people\, an album that would finally be licensed and released in 2005. My first record tells my story and when it was finally released I was able to work and tour and have a career in music - something that I always wanted but wasn't sure would happen. 20 years later\, with 6 other albums under my belt\, 2 kids and a career that is chugging along\, I can safely say that my first record paved my way forward and I'm very proud of it and still sing many of these early songs. \n\nOn March 21st we will release the record on vinyl for the first time ever\, as well as digitally release unheard songs\, outtakes and early material from that 10 year period of discovery that led to my first record. And along with the re-release there will be a tour (with more dates being announced soon)\, with a few great musicians\, where I'll play the record in its entirety as well as a few new songs - there's no 48 year old me without the 28 year old me. \n\nWith love and gratitude\,\nMartha”

SUMMARY:Tours:Sunday Drop-In Tour | “I Wonder How They Did That?”
DESCRIPTION:Ever wondered how ancient artifacts were made? A question often asked in the galleries is how the artifacts were created—their shapes\, their colors\, and their designs. This tour will discuss some of the science and engineering involved in crafting these pieces. As we travel through the museum\, we will learn how fine Greek pottery was made\, how (and why) a number of the Egyptian artifacts in the galleries are blue\, and why the Michigan Department of Transportation should perhaps evaluate Roman construction materials for our roads. Join us to uncover the innovative processes of the past.\n\nThis event is free and open to all visitors. If you have any questions or concerns regarding accessing this event\, please visit our accessibility page at https://myumi.ch/zwPkd or contact the education office by calling (734) 647-4167. SUMMARY:Film Screening:Falasteen on Screen. *Lyd* (2023) Film Screening & Q&A with filmmakers at the State Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Sci-fi Documentary | 1hr 18 min | Rami Younis and Sarah Ema Friedland | 2025 | Filmmaker Q&A to follow after the film with Rami Younis\, Sarah Ema Friedland\, and Mekarem Eljamal\n \n This feature-length\, sci-fi documentary shares multiple pasts\, presents\, and futures of the city of Lyd in Palestine/Israel. From the perspective of the city herself\, voiced by Palestinian actress Maisa Abd Elhadi\, the viewer is guided through the lifespan of a five-thousand-year-old city and its residents. Lyd was once a thriving Palestinian city with a rich history. In 636AD\, It was even considered the first capital of Palestine. When the State of Israel was founded in 1948\, Lyd became an Israeli city\, and in the process\, hundreds of Lyd’s Palestinian residents were massacred by Israeli forces\, and most of the city’s 50\,000 Palestinian residents were exiled. Today\, the city has a Jewish Israeli majority and a Palestinian minority and is disinvested and divided by racism and violence. For Palestinians\, Lyd’s story is a painful and tragic fall from grace\, which is why our film dares to ask the question: what would the city be like had the Israeli occupation of Lyd never happened?\n \n Using never-before-seen archival footage of the Israeli soldiers who carried out the massacre and expulsion\, the city explains that these events were so devastating that they fractured her reality\, and now there are two Lyds –– one occupied and one free. As the film unfolds\, documentary portions follow a chorus of characters through their daily lives\, creating a tapestry of the Palestinian experience of this city\, and vivid animations use the language of speculative fiction to envision an alternate reality where the same documentary characters live free from the trauma of the past and the violence of the present. As the film cuts between fantastical and documentary realities\, it ultimately leaves the viewer questioning which future should prevail.\n\nThis screening is a part of the Falasteen on Screen Film Festival\, brought to you by Marquee Arts\, Islamic Studies\, Center for Middle Eastern and North African Studies\, Middle East Studies\, Arab and Muslim American Studies\, Department of Anthropology\, Digital Islamic Studies Curriculum\, the International Institute\, Program in International and Comparative Studies\, Department of Film\, Television\, & Media\, Imagine Fitness and Yoga\, Palestine Aid Society of America.\n \nThe festival highlights the work of Palestinian filmmakers and serves as a platform for educating audiences about the history\, culture\, and experiences of Palestinians. Our goal is to provide a deeper understanding of life under occupation through compelling narratives that span past and present. The festival will take place in person at both the Michigan and State Theaters in Ann Arbor.\n \n2025 Falasteen on Screen Film Lineup:\nFebruary 17th: Double Feature of Short Films from Gaza: *Ahmad Alive* & *Bisan*\nFebruary 26th: *Life is Beautiful\, A Letter to Gaza*\nMarch 23rd: *Lyd* – Q&A with the filmmaker & U-M alumna\, Mekarem Eljamal\n \n More info: https://marquee-arts.org/FILM-SERIES/\n \n If there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact islamicstudies@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Generation APA: Panorama
DESCRIPTION:The annual GenAPA cultural show will be held on Sunday\, March 23rd\, 2025 at the Michigan Theater. With roughly 300 performers and 1\,300 audience members\, GenAPA stands as the largest student-run pan-Asian cultural programs. Promoting cultural diversity through tradition and history remains intrinsic to the core values of GenAPA.\n\nThis year’s theme is “Panorama” which conveys expanding the lens on APIA culture\, moving beyond its typical focus to offer a broader\, more inclusive view. By juxtaposing the narrow scope of a picture with the wide view of a panorama\, we are capturing the diversity and complexity of APIA communities. \n\nIn addition to our headliner\, we have several student groups performing. Our student groups include Michigan Malaysian Student Association\, Filipino American Student Association\, Michigan Masala\, Michigan TAAL\, KGayo3\, VeryUs\, Greenwood\, UM Taekwondo Demonstration Team\, Yuru Band\, Revolution Yoyo\, Muay Thai\, and Moli

SUMMARY:Performance:University Symphony Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:Join the USO for this performance of the evocative and ultimately optimistic Seventh Symphony by Gustav Mahler\, conducted by its music director Kenneth Kiesler. Sometimes called the Song of the Night\, two of its five movements are nocturnes. One of them is a folksy sort of night-patrol or march\, and the other a romantic serenade\, complete with guitar and mandolin. The movement between them evokes goblins and spirits in a macabre dance. From these nightwalks and nightsongs\, there are bells and drums and brass fanfares\, as a brightly lit and positive view of the world emerges. \n\nKenneth Kiesler\, conductor\n\nPROGRAM\nMahler\, Symphony No. 7

SUMMARY:Performance:Newberry & Verch
DESCRIPTION:A seamless blend of Canadian and Ozark/Appalachian styles\n\nGrowing up\, Joe Newberry and April Verch absorbed traditions of home and hearth – in his Missouri Ozarks and her Ottawa Valley of Canada. Although they are on the road much of the year\, the two musicians are fond of saying that they are rarely homesick\, because their music means they always have a bit of home with them wherever they go.\nJoe Newberry comes from a family of singers and dancers. He took up the guitar and banjo as a boy and learned fiddle tunes from great Missouri fiddlers. April Verch grew up listening to her dad’s country band play for dances in the Ottawa Valley. She started step dancing at age three and fiddling at age six. In a Newberry & Verch show\, delighted audiences see first-hand the roots of their music\, their love of performing\, and their strong musical connection. Original songs join timeless classics. Stories warm the heart\, and give audiences a chance to understand where the music comes from.\n\nKnown around the world for his clawhammer banjo playing\, Newberry is also a powerful guitarist\, singer and songwriter. The Gibson Brothers’ version of his song “Singing As We Rise\,” featuring guest vocalist Ricky Skaggs\, won the 2012 IBMA “Gospel Recorded Performance” Award. With Eric Gibson\, he shared the 2013 IBMA “Song of the Year” Award for “They Called It Music.” A longtime guest on A Prairie Home Companion\, he was a featured singer on the Transatlantic Sessions 2016 tour of the U.K.\, and at the Transatlantic Session’s debut at Merlefest in 2017. \n\nBefore launching her professional career\, Verch was the first woman to win both the Canadian Grand Masters and Canadian Open Fiddling Championships. In 2000\, she formed “The April Verch Band\,” and together they have toured the world\, performing in 18 different countries. She has released 14 solo recordings to date\, receiving JUNO\, Canadian Folk Music and Independent Music nominations and awards for several of those releases. Verch was one of 6 fiddlers who represented the Canadian fiddle tradition to the world at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver\, as part of a segment called “Fiddle Nation” featured in the Opening Ceremonies.\n\nWhether it is the power of two voices lifted in harmony\, or the sound of traditional tunes calling people to get up and move\, these two masters of tradition put on an unforgettable show. And\, when their feet kick up the dust in perfect rhythm and those two voices become one\, Joe Newberry and April Verch make folks remember why this music existed in the first place.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:CREES Exhibition. Threading the Needle: Vestiges of Colonialism and Femininity\, an installation by Gluklya
DESCRIPTION:Gluklya’s work is a powerful example of socially engaged art at the intersections of gender\, class\, and cultural identity. By focusing on experiences of female textile workers in Kyrgyzstan\, the artist explores the often-overlooked stories of women affected by Soviet and post-Soviet colonialism. \"Threading the Needle: Vestiges of Colonialism and Femininity\" retells their stories using a diverse range of media — film\, sculpture\, watercolors\, and felt tapestries. Unfolding the implications of economic and societal pressures on women\, Gluklya explores issues of poverty\, isolation\, and exploitation among the garment workers.\n \n Personal stories are woven into a broader social context — such as the legacy of the \"Likbez\" (liquidation of illiteracy) campaign among women in Central Asia during Soviet rule and entrenched patriarchal traditions\, like \"Ala Kachuu\" (bride-kidnapping). This dynamic — where colonization and modernization intertwine the individual lives they touch — raises questions about cultural identity and the ethical borders of decolonized research.\n\nThis exhibition was curated by CREES alumna Dianne Beal (BA REES '79). See more of her work here: https://www.diannebeal.com/curatorial.\n \nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at crees@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Andy Ross Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The pieces here are from a large series of works made over the last several years. In them\, Ross explores humor and personal meaning through absurd juxtapositions of pairs of wildly varied images. Each single image is stripped of its original context (be it\, for example\, a history book\, an instruction manual\, or a magazine advertisement)\, placed on a white background like some kind of specimen\, and presented afresh with a new “companion image.” These companion images confront\, contrast and converse with each other\, and thereby build new relationships\, narratives\, jokes\, and contexts.\n\nAndy Ross grew up in Macomb County\, and has been making art in various mediums since the 1970s. He received a BFA degree from College for Creative Studies\, and an MFA degree from University of Michigan. He has taught photography\, art\, and web design at colleges in California and Michigan. His photographs and collages have been exhibited in schools\, galleries\, and museums across the United States.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Angkorian Homecoming
DESCRIPTION:Informed by her experience as a refugee\, Phung Huynh’s projects explore the complexities of displacement\, assimilation\, and cultural negotiation among Cambodian and Vietnamese refugees who have resettled in the United States. She creates detailed graphite portraits on pink donut boxes to highlight the stories of Southeast Asians who have survived war trauma and genocide. Huynh’s serigraph prints about Donut Kids foreground intergenerational gaps as well as bridging the refugee parent and American child through the narratives of Cambodian American children who were raised by donut shop owners in California. Huynh’s most recent work of drawings of Cambodian Buddhist statue heads and photographic prints of decapitated statue bodies on fabric addresses the repatriation of looted Cambodian antiquities in the context of challenging the legacy of colonialism\, unethical museum practices\, and the refugee’s desire to return home. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Elizabeth Boyd-Hartmann Dizik Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:This body of work represents a playful exploration of form\, color\, and scale through the lens of cellular shapes. Inspired by the complex patterns of biological life\, the pieces are a celebration of growth\, transformation\, and the joy of experimentation. The use of non-precious materials\, such as wood balls and paint\, allowed for a liberating approach to composition and color\, while the spherical forms and circular panels evoke the look of petri dishes—symbolizing both scientific curiosity and organic development.\nBorn in Detroit\, Elizabeth is a multidisciplinary artist and mother based in the metro Detroit area\, where she works from a studio in her home. With a background in bench jewelry\, her earlier work focused on studio jewelry and was represented by Galerie Noel Guyomarc’h in Montreal.\nElizabeth’s work has been exhibited both locally and internationally. She holds a BA in Jewelry Design\, with First Class Honours\, from Central Saint Martins in London\, a BFA from the University of Michigan\, and an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art\, where she specialized in Metalsmithing and Architecture. Her diverse practice spans jewelry\, sculpture\, and installation\, blending materials and techniques to explore themes of production\, growth\, transformation\, and organic form.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Redefining the Crown
DESCRIPTION:In Winter 2025\, the Lane Hall exhibit space will feature a portraiture series titled Redefining the Crown showcasing the powerful stories of six Black breast cancer survivors.\n\nBased on a photo essay by U-M Faculty Versha Pleasant (MD/MPH) and Ava Purkiss (PhD) in Medicine at Michigan\, this exhibition examines the cultural and personal significance of hair within Black communities\, particularly through the lens of breast cancer treatment and recovery. The term \"crown\" is deeply symbolic in Black culture\, signifying beauty\, strength\, and identity. The featured photo essay by photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks.\n\nThrough their narratives and portraits\, the exhibit examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy\, inviting the audience to witness their stories with radical empathy. It explores the cultural pride and personal identity intricately tied to their hair\, and how these elements are redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThe exhibit will be on view from January 21\, 2025 to August 8\, 2025. This exhibition is presented with support from IRWG\, the Department of Women's and Gender Studies\, and Michigan Medicine. \n\nLocated on the first floor of Lane Hall (204 S. State Street)\, the Exhibit Space is free and open to the public\, M-F\, 9am-4pm.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:29th Annual Exhibition of Artists in Michigan Prisons
DESCRIPTION:The *29th Annual Exhibition of Artists in Michigan Prisons* showcases the life-affirming creative work of artists from 26 Michigan prisons.\n \nHundreds of original\, handmade works by incarcerated artists in Michigan will be displayed in the Duderstadt Center Gallery from March 18th through April 1st\, 2025. A variety of visual arts media will be featured\, including paintings\, portraits\, tattoo imagery\, landscapes\, sculpture\, fiber arts\, and more.\n\nThe *Annual Exhibition* is the largest and longest-running art show of its kind in the world. The artwork featured in the exhibit is a testament to the resilience of artists and the life-giving power of art under the most difficult of circumstances – incarceration\, isolation\, and unimaginable loss. It is an important reminder of the connections that sustain us all\, both in the free world and behind the walls.\n\nWe invite you to enjoy these unparalleled works of art and\, if you like\, make a purchase. All proceeds\, minus necessary taxes and fees\, go directly to the artists. Original pieces are available at a wide variety of price points for all budgets.\n\nThe exhibition opens March 18th:\n5 PM Gallery opens and sales begin\n6:30PM Reception & light refreshments\n7PM Celebration program begins\n9PM Gallery closes\n\nFree accessible shuttle service available on opening night:\n4:30 - 8:30 PM\, running every half-hour\nLoops to the exhibit from the Plymouth Rd. Founded in 1990 with a single theatre workshop\, PCAP has grown to include undergraduate courses\, exhibitions\, publications\, a prison reentry arts program\, and events that reach thousands of individuals each year.\n\n*The University of Michigan College of Literature\, Science and the Arts (LSA) greatly values inclusion and access for all. SUMMARY:Exhibition:More than Gray: Reimagining Early America in Full Color
DESCRIPTION:The American past was lived in full color\, but this vibrant history can be easily missed in surviving evidence. You can’t deny that there’s something about a black-and-white photograph that feels… stuffy. With portraits showing people with their shirts buttoned right to the neck and everything in shades of gray and brown\, our imaginations can incline to thinking of the past as a bit staid\, if not downright dull. But look a little closer\, and you’ll see signs that the fashion choices available to those who came before us were more colorful than you might first think. From the fabrics they wore\, to the games they played\, or the books they read\, their world was alive with bright hues. This exhibit invites you to reimagine history with a fuller color palette and picture the vibrancy and joy that just might be hidden behind the unsmiling photographs.\n\nExhibition opening weekdays from 12-4.

Mathematical GR is the study of gravitation through analysis of the Einstein equations\, which link the matter content of our universe to its geometry. It uses techniques from geometric analysis and nonlinear partial differential equations (PDE) in order to prove rigorous mathematical theorems that answer questions from physics. The first subject in this dissertation is linear first order hyperbolic systems of PDE in a double null foliation. The second is the formation of trapped surfaces in general relativity. Prior to these\, we provide a brief introduction to the main ideas of mathematical general relativity which are featured in this thesis.\n\nA double null foliation is a particular type of foliation of spacetime which is well-suited to the study of gravitational radiation. Gravitational waves propagate along the hypersurfaces defined by a double null foliation. The Bianchi identities for the Riemann curvature of a vacuum spacetime exhibit a hyperbolic structure which has been used to obtain detailed nonlinear estimates on the null curvature components. In the first main work of this dissertation\, we introduce the notion of a double null hyperbolic system of equations and prove a global existence and uniqueness theorem for these systems. We then discuss the relationship between these systems and the Bianchi equations. We also derive a novel algebraic constraint which must be satisfied\, at every point in the spacetime\, by tensor fields satisfying the linearized Bianchi equations (the linearized Bianchi equations are obtained from the usual Bianchi equations by replacing the null Weyl tensor components with unknown tensorfields). This work has potential applications in the study of gravitational waves\, as well as in any system where the null structure is paramount\, such as Einstein-null dust\, Einstein-massless Vlasov\, or Einstein-Maxwell.\n\nIn the second main work of this dissertation\, which is based on joint work with Lydia Bieri\, Neel Patel\, and Pengyu Le\, we prove a trapped surface formation result for a certain class of null dust spacetimes\, extending the seminal work of Christodoulou. This result extends to past null infinity. We show that if the incoming energy due to gravitation or null dust radiation is sufficiently large\, then a trapped surface will form. In particular\, we show that a trapped surface can form solely due to the concentration of null dust radiation\, in the absence of any gravitational energy. Trapped surfaces are closely related to black holes\; a spacetime which contains a closed trapped surface and a complete future null infinity necessarily contains a black hole\, with the trapped surface inside. The initial data constructed in this work is in the large data regime\, is quite general\, and can be arbitrarily far from already containing a trapped surface. New ideas are needed and developed to analyze the matter introduced in this work.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:\"Nature Big Picture\" Workshop
DESCRIPTION:There are many different perspectives and visions for Detroit’s past\, present\, and future. Some of these perspectives have focused on the idea of emptiness and vacancy\, depicting space as lacking connections or relationships. By portraying places as “empty”\, we risk overlooking the care\, relationships\, and connections that already exist in these places. In our collaborative mapping workshop\, happening on March 24th from 3-5pm at the UM Detroit Center\, we aim to tell a different story: Detroit is not empty. By co-developing maps that visualize networks of people\, nature\, and their relationships\, we will identify the many ways in which care and connection are happening. We will together reflect on what this collective “big picture” of nature might mobilize for Detroit’s communities. The maps and networks that we create during the workshop will be shared with all participants and we hope the workshop can spark conversations over drinks and snacks\, uncover new collaboration opportunities\, and offer fresh perspectives on landscapes in Detroit.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:“What Is Poetry?”
DESCRIPTION:Lecture and Conversation\n\n3222 Angell Hall\n\nRSVP here: https://sessions.studentlife.umich.edu/login?r=/track/event/session/88784\n\nWhat is poetry? You probably have some idea\, or at least you know it when you see it. You probably also know that this is a trick question. In practice\, it’s not hard to know a poem when you see one: it appears in lines or it rhymes or it’s called poetry even if it looks like prose. In theory\, everyone knows you are not supposed to answer the question. This talk will address the relation between determinate practice and indeterminate theory in modern (post-eighteenth-century) Anglo-American poetics.
