It lifts up the voices of those who have been silenced by the criminal legal system. The Humanize the Numbers project gives them a freedom not normally allowed in prison. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Maroon Assemblages: Mexico\, from the 21st to the 18th Century. DESCRIPTION:This is a draft chapter from my book\, Maroon Assemblages: Mexico\, 21st to 17th centuries. The book charts the traces of fugitivity in the eastern jurisdictions of New Spain beginning in the 17th century through to its absences in present-day Amapa\, a Oaxacan pueblo that was founded during Mexico’s colonial occupation by Black fugitives who fled sugar haciendas located in the southeastern provinces. The book approaches the practice of colonial fugitivity through Deleuze and Guattari’s concept of the assemblage\, bringing it into focus as shifting constellations of racialized peoples\, geographies\, discourses\, archives and political projects that crystallize and disperse at different moments in time. I track these constellations across multiple archives—archaeological materials\, historical documents\, contemporary landscapes\, and oral histories. Specifically\, this chapter interrogates an image that troubles the legal archives in colonial Mexico—the category of negro cimarrón\, or Black maroon—and situates it within a history of Spanish colonial epistemologies\, discursive processes\, and material practices.\n\nThis chapter 1) tracks the fractured process of creating a maroon archive\, that is\, the physical consignation of documents that repeated and reproduced ‘the question of maroons’\; 2) it considers how the colonial category 'maroon' both configured the lived subjectivities of those conscripted into it and how those subjects exceeded it\; and 3) it examines maroon durations. By the mid 18th-century\, when Spanish colonial officials began to systematically gather sources on maroons\, they had already been a centuries-old problem. These archived images\, then\, folded time\, as documents recorded various processes with different material durations such as the fugitive practices of maroons\, fluctuating political conditions in New Spain\, and colonial ‘problem spaces’ that had outlived their political presents. What he witnessed and captured in a series of gripping photographs is *tikkun olam*\, a central concept in Judaism that denotes activities that repair and improve the world we live in. The exhibit shifts the lens away from the horror the refugees have endured to focus instead on human goodness and how it can overcome lingering evil.\n\nIn his 45-year career\, freelance photographer Chuck Fishman has focused on social and political issues with a strong humanistic concern. His work on Jewish life in Poland\, begun in 1975\, continues to the present day. Fishman’s work has been extensively published\, exhibited\, and collected worldwide\, and has earned him prestigious World Press Photo Foundation medals four times. As in other cultural contexts\, “feminism” in Japan can invoke sharply different associations\, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority\, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters\, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families\, workplaces\, schools\, political institutions\, and laws\, among many other contexts. Many ­– but certainly not all – feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects\, working toward recognition\, repair\, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\n\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. We hypothesize that one cost of migration is the disruption of traditional elderly support structures\, where sons co-reside with their parents and care for them in their old age. Dowry can attenuate this cost by providing sons and parents with a liquid transfer that eases constraints on income sharing. To test this hypothesis\, we collect two novel datasets on property rights over dowry among migrants and among families of migrants. Net transfers of dowry to a man’s parents are common. Consistent with using dowry for income sharing\, transfers occur more when sons migrate\, especially when they work in higher-earning occupations. Nationally representative data confirms that migration rates are higher in areas with stronger historical dowry traditions. Finally\, exploiting a large-scale highway construction program\, we show that men from areas with stronger dowry traditions have a higher migration response to reduced migration costs. The estimation of such optimal transport maps has become increasingly relevant in modern statistical applications\, such as generative modeling. At present\, estimation rates are only known in a few settings (e.g. when P and Q have densities bounded above and below and when the transport map lies in a Hölder class)\, which are often not reflected in practice. We present a unified methodology for obtaining rates of estimation of optimal transport maps in general function spaces. Our assumptions are significantly weaker than those appearing in the literature: we require only that the source measure P satisfies a Poincaré inequality and that the optimal map be the gradient of a smooth convex function that lies in a space whose metric entropy can be controlled. As a special case\, we recover known estimation rates for bounded densities and Hölder transport maps\, but also obtain nearly sharp results in many settings not covered by prior work. For example\, we provide the first statistical rates of estimation when P is the normal distribution and the transport map is given by an infinite-width shallow neural network.\nJoint work with Divol and Pooladian. However\, a consequence of this heightened partisan animosity may be that people avoid those very same heterogeneous networks that have the potential to contain hostility. We thus ask two intertwined questions: (1) to what extent heterogeneous political networks inoculate against outparty hostility? and (2) does political partisanship inform social relationships? \n \nUsing an original survey that includes experiments and novel social network questions\, we find that partisanship does not spontaneously come to mind and is not a high priority in determining everyday life interactions. However\, if provided information about partisanship\, people heavily use it in selecting their interaction partners. Moreover\, both close ties and\, even more\, acquaintance networks are quite politically diverse. Finally\, individuals embedded in heterogeneous social networks have significantly lower outparty hostility and are less likely to rely on partisanship when choosing future partners. We advance two mechanisms through which exposure to politically heterogeneous networks might reduce outparty animosity. Political discussions\, common with close ties\, help people understand others’ point of view — hear the other side –\, while exposure to a diverse network of acquaintances contributes to reduce misperceptions about outparty members — see the other side. DESCRIPTION:This paper asks how flexible incentive pay affects unemployment dynamics. Intro- ducing general dynamic incentive contracts into a benchmark labor search model yields three results. First\, the response of unemployment to labor demand shocks is first-order equivalent in an economy with flexible incentive pay and without bargaining\, and in an economy with rigid real wages as in Hall (2005)—if both economies are calibrated to the same steady state labor share. Second\, with both bargaining and incentives\, wage cyclicality arising from bargaining dampens unemployment fluctuations\, but wage cyclicality due to incentive provision does not. Third\, calibrating the model suggests at least 40% of new hire wage cyclicality in the data arises from incentives. There- fore a standard labor search model\, calibrated to weakly pro-cyclical wages\, matches unemployment dynamics in our incentive pay model\, calibrated to substantially more pro-cyclical wages. (In the homogeneous case\, this version of classical proofs dating back to Onsager\, Yang and McCoy-Wu\, among other simplifications\, bypasses Toeplitz determinants as an intermediate step in the computations.) The main new result is a formula for the magnetizations in the m-th column of a layered model in the zig-zag half-plane via Hankel determinants constructed from the spectral measure of a certain Jacobi matrix that encodes interaction parameters between the columns. This result holds in full generality and leads to open questions on asymptotics of such determinants in several setups of interest. Survivors Saving Survivors: Photographing the Ukrainian Refugee Experience in Poland DESCRIPTION:In April and June 2022\, at the invitation of JCC Krakow\, Chuck Fishman traveled to Poland to document the JCC and the Jewish community’s commitment to helping Ukrainian refugees fleeing their war-torn country. What he witnessed and captured in a series of gripping photographs is *tikkun olam*\, a central concept in Judaism that denotes activities that repair and improve the world we live in. The exhibit shifts the lens away from the horror the refugees have endured to focus instead on human goodness and how it can overcome lingering evil.\n\nIn his 45-year career\, freelance photographer Chuck Fishman has focused on social and political issues with a strong humanistic concern. His work on Jewish life in Poland\, begun in 1975\, continues to the present day. Fishman’s work has been extensively published\, exhibited\, and collected worldwide\, and has earned him prestigious World Press Photo Foundation medals four times. His photographs have appeared on the covers of *Time*\, *Life*\, *Fortune*\, *Newsweek*\, *The London Sunday Times*\, *The Economist*\, and numerous others. Rather than imagining it as a singular\, coherent object\, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity\, difference\, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts\, “feminism” in Japan can invoke sharply different associations\, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority\, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters\, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families\, workplaces\, schools\, political institutions\, and laws\, among many other contexts. Many ­– but certainly not all – feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects\, working toward recognition\, repair\, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\n\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Created by nine contemporary artists in Japan and the United States\, the portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of \"feminism\" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences\, needs\, and activism within Japan. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility.
