Paul Rand also crafted memorable graphic design in the second half of the twentieth century. DESCRIPTION:The Quito Project is an organization of University of Michigan faculty and students of all disciplines\, including liberal arts\, education\, and engineering. We travel to Quito\, Ecuador every summer to run a free summer camp for approximately 60 children ages 5-12. Our aim is to improve the education\, and well-being in the underserved and politically underrepresented communities of Quito in addition to raising discussions and awareness of the Ecuadorian culture and society at the University of Michigan and beyond. Our students come from low resource backgrounds and due to their financially destitute situations\, we provide our students with two meals a day\, hygienic supplies\, and school supplies to help give them the tools they need to succeed through education\, encourage our students to continue onto higher education\, and provide them with some of the basic necessities every human being should have access to.  We are trying to collect school supplies In order to allow our tutors to continue creating fun and engaging lesson plans and to give our students the best experience possible. We are looking for any school supplies that you may have left over from the school year or if would be willing to donate any new supplies as well. The hanji techniques she uses include natural dyeing and waxing\, texturing for supple or stiff surfaces\, slicing and spinning into thread\, and tearing strips to cord. Her paper ducks are inspired by Korean wedding ducks – known for fertility and mating for life – and are built without an armature\; the hollow bodies are woven like baskets. She sees her photographs more as paintings\, and her still lifes have powerful cast shadows and frequent light play. Influenced by Gerhardt Richter and surrealism\, West’s images communicate a sense of being\, connecting not only the objects in the photographs\, but also the viewer and the photograph. She draws inspiration from the objects in her vast collection of unique treasures\, and she speaks to their unreserved timelessness with maturity and wonder. All of the images in this exhibit were created using instant film in a 4x5 view camera. Many of Vignaud's maps were extracted from broken atlases\, originally published by the illustrious Hondius and Janssonius publishing houses. Rand considered the designer’s task to be the symbolic communication of a company’s character. This recent acquisition presentation features the poster Rand created as part of IBM’s THINK promotional campaign. The design is a rebus\, or visual puzzle\, wherein Rand cleverly transforms the letters of IBM’s logo into pictures. He received his Ph.D. in developmental psychology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in August 2017. His research investigates how socializing agents impact the development of social identities during adolescence and how interventions can be developed to shape identities to be congruent with a more positive sense of self and academic success.\n\n \n\nAbstract:\nIdentity development represents one of the primary social developmental tasks of adolescence and has constantly been shown to be associated with and even predict many important outcomes in the lives of adolescents. This talk will detail the findings from three different studies that investigate factors that shape social identities and their associations with outcomes. The first study explores the role of mothers in the development of ethnic-racial identity (ERI) among adolescents. Estimation of longitudinal\, bidirectional influence between African American mothers and adolescents was assessed as youth aged from Grade 5 to Grade 12. The second study sought to better understand the relation between ERI and academic outcomes through assessing how valuing of school could act as mediating mechanism in longitudinal relations of ERI and academic motivation among North African French adolescents. Lastly\, the third study was an intervention study. Some ethnic/racial and gender groups are negatively stereotyped in academic domains\, thus academic success is likely not considered to be a characteristic of an in-group member or congruent with a social identity. To thwart these negative stereotypes and to make academic success congruent with ethnic-racial and gender identities\, an intervention was developed with the use of role models and a self-affirmation task with American Indian adolescents. Within the CDD Vault software\, Activity & Registration\, Visualization\, Inventory\, and ELN capabilities all address today's markets. Secure\, web-based collaborative technologies are especially applicable to the informatics needs of (and broadly used by) public-private-partnerships (PPPs). Web-based platforms are a natural fit for collaboration due to the economic\, architectural\, and design benefits of a single platform that transcends any one organization's solo requirements. In contrast to the CDD Vault for today's collaborations\, CDD's Research Informatics Group invents bleeding edge technologies for tomorrow's needs. For example\, open source descriptors and model sharing capabilities allow for platform-independent collaborations\, even for sensitive data and IP\, with groups reticent to share. CDD and Pfizer have demonstrated that these open source descriptors and models were statistically similar to commercial models (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20693417). The main idea is to democratize model building to engage experimentalists to actually want to use models. As a second example\, the recently developed BioAssay Express (BAE) technology streamlines the conversion of human-readable assay descriptions to computer-readable information. Here the main idea is to allow researchers to easily search and combine similar bioassay protocols\, even though those similarity searches are much more difficult than Tanimoto (Jaccard) chemical and biological sequence similarity searches. BAE uses semantic standards to mark up bioprotocols\, which unleashes the full power of informatics technology on data that could previously only be organized by crude text searching (https://peerj.com/articles/cs-61/). These two newer web-technologies may be used not only with the CDD Vault\, but also with other commercial\, academic\, or government built software tools. All open source components are in GitHub. \n\nBarry A. Bunin\, Ph.D. is the CEO of Collaborative Drug Discovery. Prior to CDD\, Dr. Bunin was an Entrepreneur in Residence with Eli Lilly & Co. During a national application process for phone survey and data entry positions\, we randomly offered applicants alternative wage-hour bundles. Jobseeker choices over these bundles yield estimates for the MVT as a function of hours worked. These quantities trace out a labor supply relationship. As predicted by the conventional model of the allocation of time\, the substitution effect is positive. Individual labor supply is highly elastic at low hours and becomes more inelastic at higher hours. For unemployed job applicants\, the opportunity cost of a full-time job due to lost leisure\, household production\, and other non-work activities is approximately 60% of their estimated market wage. A similar estimate is found when we reproduce elements of this experiment in a nationally representative survey. However\, its evolution is largely unexplored territory. I will describe our experimental exploration of the evolution over 1.5 billion years of two allosteric regulation mechanisms widely found in the modern protein kinase superfamily\, phosphorylation of the activation loop and binding of a regulatory partner protein. Using Ancestral Sequence Reconstruction (ASR) we unravel the origins of allosteric activation including surprising mechanistic features. Moreover\, ASR enabled identification of the underlying allosteric network that spans the kinase from the N-terminal to the C-terminal lobes. In the second part of the talk I describe how we exploit this new knowledge for the development of allosteric inhibitors and activators. This latter approach delivered novel kinase inhibitors and activators with extreme specificity and high affinity thereby opening the road to new cancer treatment. Third\, I will address the evolution of enzyme catalysis in response to one of the most fundamental evolutionary drivers\, temperature. Using ASR\, we answer the question of how enzymes coped with an inherent drop in catalytic speed caused as the earth cooled down over 3.5 billion years. The spectra of 35 million galaxies and quasars over 14\,000 square degrees will be measured during a 5-year survey. A new prime focus corrector for the Mayall telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory will deliver light to 5\,000 individually targeted fiber-fed robotic positioners. The fibers in turn feed ten broadband multi-object spectrographs. This talk will give an overview of the DESI project and then describe several unique instrument and survey challenges. I will highlight the ProtoDESI experiment\, an on-sky technology demonstration with the goal to reduce technical risks associated with aligning optical fibers with targets using robotic fiber positioners and maintaining the stability required to operate DESI. The ProtoDESI prime focus instrument\, which was installed and commissioned on the 4-m Mayall telescope from Aug. 14 to Sep. 30\, 2016\, consisted of three fiber positioners\, illuminated fiducials\, and a guide camera. ProtoDESI was successful in acquiring targets with the robotically positioned fibers and demonstrated that the DESI guiding requirements can be met. Additionally\, I will report progress on a predictive sky background model for DESI\, built on the spectra from the 4-year Baryon Acoustic Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS). This dataset consists of ~1 million unique sky spectra covering 360 - 1040 nm collected in a variety of observational conditions. STS studies of credibility struggles are premised upon shared epistemological and moral foundations\, even as they carefully remove markers of the all-too-human arbitration process. But how should one view credibility struggles in times of geological upheaval\, where epistemological and political substrates are being torn apart and reconfigured? How should we conceptualize democratic legitimacy during periods of technological intrusions? Using the case of anti-nuclear activism in India\, I demonstrate how activists\, villagers\, and different state officials are engaged in tectonic credibility struggles. Such contestations are overtly political and epistemic\, and attempt to instantiate particular nuclear-democratic imaginaries by forming and expanding credibility economies across different audiences. The substantial challenges activists face in forming networked credibility economies necessitate re-theorizing civic epistemologies in India and beyond. The texts of this corpus preserve a set of dialogues between generations of family members\, who were deliberately engaging with one another’s memories of home\, family\, travel\, and ideas\, as each of them moved between Shushtar\, Iraq-i Arab\, and the kingdoms of Hind\, and penned their narratives. Nonetheless\, these writers appear to have maintained a sense of family solidarity and homeland even as they were dispersed throughout cities on both sides of the Indian Ocean.\n\nIn his presentation\, Mancini-Lander will argue that the dialogic and intertextual nature of this corpus\, where the boundaries between individual authors is fluid\, provides a blueprint for understanding a process by which these authors negotiated two opposing\, yet commensurately fluid sensibilities—one cosmopolitan and the other local. Focusing on the authors’ prevalent and intertwined conceits constructed around flows of water\, disease\, knowledge\, and the Prophet’s seed\, he contends that the logic of this negotiation becomes comprehensible. More importantly\, by observing the historically contingent variations in strategy by which these writers emplot Shushstar’s history\, he traces their development as they changed over time.\n\nMancini-Lander is a Lecturer in the History of Iran as SOAS\, London. In 2012\, he completed his dissertation in UM’s Near Eastern Studies Department under the supervision of Kathryn Babayan. Entitled “Memory on the Boundary of Empire: Narrating Place in the Early Modern Historiography of Yazd\,” it was awarded the Malcolm H. Kerr Dissertation Prize (Humanities) by the Middle East Studies Association in 2013. Our aim is to improve the education\, and well-being in the underserved and politically underrepresented communities of Quito in addition to raising discussions and awareness of the Ecuadorian culture and society at the University of Michigan and beyond. Our students come from low resource backgrounds and due to their financially destitute situations\, we provide our students with two meals a day\, hygienic supplies\, and school supplies to help give them the tools they need to succeed through education\, encourage our students to continue onto higher education\, and provide them with some of the basic necessities every human being should have access to.  We are trying to collect school supplies In order to allow our tutors to continue creating fun and engaging lesson plans and to give our students the best experience possible. We are looking for any school supplies that you may have left over from the school year or if would be willing to donate any new supplies as well. The hanji techniques she uses include natural dyeing and waxing\, texturing for supple or stiff surfaces\, slicing and spinning into thread\, and tearing strips to cord. Her paper ducks are inspired by Korean wedding ducks – known for fertility and mating for life – and are built without an armature\; the hollow bodies are woven like baskets. Many of Vignaud's maps were extracted from broken atlases\, originally published by the illustrious Hondius and Janssonius publishing houses. Initially a mechanical engineer\, he learned in medical school about the newly-developed cochlear implant\, an electronic device placed in the inner ear to enhance the hearing of the severely hearing-impaired. immediately that he wanted to work on combining engineering and medicine to restore people’s hearing. .He is now a neurotologist\n\nDr. Art's research has focused on cochlear implants and other applications of engineering for the treatment of ear diseases. The cochlear implant is an engineering marvel that has changed the lives of nearly 500\,000 deaf and hard-of-hearing adults and children worldwide. The device and patient outcomes have steadily improved over the last 30 years. In the \"xiqu\" (Chinese opera) play\, Chasing the Fish Spirit\, a dense series of rapid re-makes at the end of the 1950s put the complex interplay of these politics into full view\, pitting not just the play’s downtrodden against the wealthy or mortals against immortals\, but fame against obscurity\, city against country\, high culture against low\, and perhaps most riskily\, ideological critique against ideological correctness. The nexus of these different tensions forms the off-stage drama of how this once-closeted play from rural Hunan eventually made it through multiple adaptations onto silver screens for export to Hong Kong and abroad. \n \nAnne Rebull is a postdoctoral fellow at the Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies. Her research interests focus on political movements to reform indigenous Chinese theater in the modern era\, especially the periods before and after the founding of the People’s Republic. DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\n\nThe failure to align the incentives of conflictual groups in favor of peaceful coexistence and beneficial reforms is often seen as a major cause of persistent underdevelopment around the world. However\, much less is known about strategies that have been successful at overcoming such political economy challenges. One approach that holds much promise\, and in fact appears to have had some historical success\, is the provision of financial assets that align the interests of winners and potential losers from reform by providing claims on the future.\n\nThis project analyzes the promise and limitations of financial instruments as a means for fostering broad political coalitions that favor peace and beneficial reforms. It takes as a departure point the benchmark theory of portfolio choice\, in which all agents hold the same (market) portfolio of risky assets. This may also align political incentives\, as all individuals can gain from policies that improve the returns or lower the risks of the market portfolio\, including risks stemming from political instability and conflict. The project then analyzes a range of historical cases in which the introduction of financial assets have succeeded or failed at making politics less conflictual over time\, focusing on three revolutionary states that subsequently led the world in economic growth: England\, the early United States and Meiji Japan. Next the project exploits a field experiments to test whether financial mechanisms can help raise support for peace in contemporary settings\, beginning with the case of Israel. One approach that holds much promise\, and in fact appears to have had some historical success\, is the provision of financial assets that align the interests of winners and potential losers from reform by providing claims on the future. This project analyzes the promise and limitations of financial instruments as a means for fostering broad political coalitions that favor peace and beneficial reforms. It takes as a departure point the benchmark theory of portfolio choice\, in which all agents hold the same (market) portfolio of risky assets. This may also align political incentives\, as all individuals can gain from policies that improve the returns or lower the risks of the market portfolio\, including risks stemming from political instability and conflict. The project then analyzes a range of historical cases in which the introduction of financial assets have succeeded or failed at making politics less conflictual over time\, focusing on three revolutionary states that subsequently led the world in economic growth: England\, the early United States and Meiji Japan. In the atmosphere\, the water content of the particles depends on their composition as well as the relative humidity and temperature. As crystalline salt particles are exposed to increasing relative humidity\, the deliquescence phase transition results in rapid formation of aqueous droplets at the deliquescence relative humidity (DRH). The DRH values of atmospheric salts are generally well predicted by theory. In contrast\, decreasing relative humidity results in particle morphologies and water content that are difficult to predict theoretically\, and must be measured in the laboratory. At sufficiently low relative humidity\, the droplets may undergo efflorescence (at the ERH)\, resulting in recrystallization of the salt particles. Hysteresis in water uptake and loss is often observed and the DRH can be very much higher than the ERH. Thus atmospheric salt particles are often assumed to be aqueous throughout much of their atmospheric lifetime. Here we use a long working distance optical trap to measure the deliquescence and efflorescence phase transitions of individual levitated salt particles. In addition\, we probe how efflorescence is influenced by collisions of the salt droplet with other particles and by immersion of solids within the droplet. We find that while both contact and immersion can promote efflorescence\, contact-induced efflorescence is by far more effective. These laboratory experiments challenge our theoretical understanding of nucleation in microscopic salt particles. We travel to Quito\, Ecuador every summer to run a free summer camp for approximately 60 children ages 5-12. Our aim is to improve the education\, and well-being in the underserved and politically underrepresented communities of Quito in addition to raising discussions and awareness of the Ecuadorian culture and society at the University of Michigan and beyond. Our students come from low resource backgrounds and due to their financially destitute situations\, we provide our students with two meals a day\, hygienic supplies\, and school supplies to help give them the tools they need to succeed through education\, encourage our students to continue onto higher education\, and provide them with some of the basic necessities every human being should have access to.  We are trying to collect school supplies In order to allow our tutors to continue creating fun and engaging lesson plans and to give our students the best experience possible. We are looking for any school supplies that you may have left over from the school year or if would be willing to donate any new supplies as well. Her paper ducks are inspired by Korean wedding ducks – known for fertility and mating for life – and are built without an armature\; the hollow bodies are woven like baskets. Her landscape prints – made from impressions on paper from carved and inked woodblocks – have received critical acclaim in both Japan and the US\; the Autumn\, Sleeping Bear Dunes series is in the permanent collection of the Detroit Institute of Arts. Brodbeck applies principles of Japanese aesthetics\, including subtlety\, austerity and naturalness\, to her art practice in Kalamazoo\, Michigan. Blue is… tranquil pools of clear water\; languid clouds drifting in azure skies\; mood indigo\; cobalt glass\; cerulean blue eyes\; sapphire cornflowers\; poignant music\, emotion and sentiment. Blue is a rare color in nature\, yet found in the largest things such as sea\, lake and sky\, as well as some of the smallest: sapphires\, forget-me-nots and delicate tropical butterflies. Influenced by Gerhardt Richter and surrealism\, West’s images communicate a sense of being\, connecting not only the objects in the photographs\, but also the viewer and the photograph. She draws inspiration from the objects in her vast collection of unique treasures\, and she speaks to their unreserved timelessness with maturity and wonder. Many of Vignaud's maps were extracted from broken atlases\, originally published by the illustrious Hondius and Janssonius publishing houses. Staff in the Clark Library sought to organize these fascinating maps based on their physical characteristics and similarities\, with the ultimate goal of reassembling the original atlases.\n\nThis exhibit and the accompanying online exhibit (https://www.lib.umich.edu/online-exhibits/exhibits/show/rediscoveringvignaud) feature the results of their remarkable findings\, as well as a glimpse into the history of the Golden Age of mapmaking in 17th century Amsterdam. The Determinants of the Intergenerational Transmission of Wealth DESCRIPTION:Abstract\n\nWealth is highly correlated between parents and their children\; however\, little is known about the extent to which these relationships are genetic or determined by environmental factors. We use administrative data on the net wealth of a large sample of Swedish adoptees merged with similar information for their biological and adoptive parents. Comparing the relationship between the wealth of adopted and biological parents and that of the adopted child\, we find that\, even prior to any inheritance\, there is a substantial role for environment and a much smaller role for pre-birth factors. When bequests are taken into account\, the role of adoptive parental wealth becomes much stronger. We find no evidence that education or earnings of parents are important drivers of the intergenerational wealth relationship between children and their adoptive parents and a limited role for child earnings\, education\, savings rates\, and asset allocation in mediating the relationship. Indeed \, savings rates are lower for children of wealthier parents. Our findings suggest that wealth transmission is not primarily because children from wealthier families are inherently more talented or more able but that\, even in relatively egalitarian Sweden\, wealth begets wealth. We also study consumption as an alternative measure of welfare and find both biological and environmental effects. However\, the intergenerational consumption relationships largely disappear once we control for education\, earnings\, and wealth of parents and children. For his solo show\, \"Abstract Ancestry\,\" at University of Michigan Institute for the Humanities\, Harrison will produce a suite of mechanical drawings with his homemade 3D printer. Using books and documents containing problematic historical portrayals as the substrate for his drawings\, Harrison is able to explore issues of representation. The exhibition also examines abstraction\, setting the printers to work at a low resolution ensures that imperfections and variability come through in these machine-produced drawings.\n\nOn April 5\, join us as we celebrate the opening of our final exhibition of the academic year with our 2018 Efroymson Emerging Artist in Residence Matthew Angelo Harrison.
