SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student AIM Seminar: Numerical Methods for Vorticity Dynamics on a Sphere
DESCRIPTION:The Barotropic Vorticity Equation describes the balance of vorticity and the Coriolis force for a fluid moving on a rotating sphere\, and is important in geophysical fluid dynamics. In this talk\, I will discuss some numerical considerations\, first presenting some basics of geophysical fluid dynamics\, before presenting a short derivation of the barotropic vorticity equation\, and then moving on to discuss various numerical aspects of the problem. I will focus on a Lagrangian particle discretization\, as well as a new fast summation technique based on a spherical tree code. I will also touch on the role of adaptive mesh refinement.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CSAS Lecture Series | Digital Influencers and the Business of “Data Tested” Campaigns in India
DESCRIPTION:This event cosponsored by the U-M Center for Ethics Society and Computing.\n\nThis talk will delve into the narratives and strategies of a new class of political consultants and the divergent practices of election influencers in India\, to propose “shadow politics” as a digitally mediated structure of election campaigning. Highlighting the specificity of shadow politics in terms of “data centricism” and the dual structure of official-unofficial campaign streams\, I will discuss how disinformation and extreme speech production is intricately linked to the logics of political marketing and growing uptake for digital tools that define the evolving spaces of commercial political consultancy. Theoretically positioning “shadow politics” in relation to distinctive mass political cultures of South Asia discussed in postcolonial scholarship\, I will conclude by highlighting policy directions for disinformation regulation.\n \n Sahana Udupa is Professor of Media Anthropology at the University of Munich (LMU) and Principal Investigator of the For Digital Dignity Research Network. Her latest publications include the co-authored monograph\, Digital Unsettling: Decoloniality and Dispossession in the Age of Social Media (New York University Press\, with E. G. Dattatreyan)\, and co-edited volume\, Digital Hate: The Global Conjuncture of Extreme Speech (Indiana University Press). She is the recipient of Joan Shorenstein Fellowship at the Harvard Kennedy School\, Francqui Chair (Belgium) and European Research Council Grant Awards.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:TEDxUofM 2023 Conference: Glitch
DESCRIPTION:Glitch\nOur theme for this year’s conference is GLITCH. Glitches represent the idea that life often tries to derail us off a steady path. Although we may experience a setback or glitch\, we can learn from it\, propel forward\, and start to appreciate every pixel of our experiences. We aim to cultivate an attendee experience that reflects the many meanings of this theme. As always\, we hope those who attend our conference will leave having discovered the importance of their own glitches while learning to look for the positive outcomes.\n\nSpeakers\nOur speakers have already been selected for this year's conference. They will be revealed here and on our social media throughout the month of January. Make sure to follow us on social media and check back regularly for when they are announced. \n\nDr. Feranmi Okanlami\n\nDr. Feranmi Okanlami is the Director of the first-ever Adaptive Sports and Fitness program at the University\, an assistant professor of family medicine\, and serves as director of Student Accessibility and Accommodation Services. After facing a spinal cord injury in his third year of orthopedic surgery residency at Yale that paralyzed him from the chest down\, he has gone on to pursue several degrees and receive the Nielson award for his disability advocacy. He served on the St. Joseph County Board of Health\, appointed by then Mayor\, Pete Buttigieg and has been featured on news outlets including CBS News\, PBS News Hour\, and Good Morning America. Dr. Okanlami continues to push for DEI and accessibility with his message that disability is not inability. \n\nIn his talk he hopes to explore disability as a fabric of diversity and its relationship with society.\n\nElizabeth Trinh\n\nElizabeth is originally from Vietnam and is currently a Ph.D. student and researcher in the Management and Organizations program at the University of Michigan Ross School of Business. She has a unique life story of growing up in a small town in Georgia since her father was on a Student Visa in America. The community however in her small town was something that molded her to become the person she is today even though it was a very segregated town as her family was the only people of Asian descent there. When she got older\, she moved to Atlanta where she first started to see people who looked like her. She further went to Stanford for her undergraduate degree in premed studies. \n\nIn her talk\, she hopes to tell her story and how it affected her to learn the importance of mentorship and creating meaningful connections wherever we go! \n\nAmy Tseng\n\nAmy is a passionate speaker who works at Walt Disney as a Technical Director\, which act as the bridge between the art and technical sides of animation (ex. The water in Moana). She grew up in a small town in Port Huron\, MI and was always a part of many different activities in sports\, theater\, music\, and academics. At first\, she worked for Nordstrom\, but really wanted to do some creative work as well\, which is how she decided to apply for Walt Disney. So far she has worked on Zootopia+ (which is her favorite project so far)\, Strange World\, and is working on a film that comes out in 2024. She is currently based in Los Angeles\, CA.\n\nIn her talk\, she will touch on story telling and how “everyone is a storyteller” as everyone has experiences that build off of each other and all of these experiences when growing up builds our stories!\n\nTommy Searle\n\nTommy is an app developer and is a 2020 UofM Alumni! During his first year in Michigan\, he lost his dad to suicide. He ran 6 campaigns surrounding mental health awareness\, sold t-shirts\, and raised over $20\,000. He began interning at LinkedIn but soon recruited his closest friends to quit their jobs and create their first app\, WellNest. Throughout his work\, he loved seeing people wear or use the products he created. His goals for the future include increasing the happiness that we feel on our phones and breaking the pattern of phones disconnecting us. Tommy speaks in such a confident and genuine way that is truly inspiring.\n\nIn his talk\, he will touch on topics such as persistence\, turning something “bad” into a good positive force of energy\, and being unafraid of failing!\n\nNicole Auerbach\n\nNicole is a sports journalist for the Athletic. She is also a UofM alumnus and at her time here she wrote for the Michigan Daily Sports section\, being one of the very few females in that category. She originally thought she would pursue business in college but someone in her dorm told her about the Michigan Daily. That changed the trajectory of her life and through working at the Michigan Daily she worked her way up after having many internships to a first full-time job as an editor at USA Today. From 2017 to the present\, she is doing football reporting for the Atlantic and she does some radio coverage on the side with Sirius XM. \n\nIn her talk\, she will speak about her experience being a woman in the sports industry\, a heavily male-dominated space\, and resiliency through coping with difficult situations in what many perceive as a “dream job”. \n\nAnnie Rauwerda\n\nAnnie is currently a freelance writer and she runs the “Depths of Wikipedia” account on Instagram which holds 1.1 million followers. During her time as a Junior at UofM when COVID hit she was able to take time to post her favorite things from Wikipedia on Instagram. This quickly became a hit with people on Instagram and this growth allowed her to freelance as a junior doing live shows and stand-up comedy while still in college. She was able to get a book deal and do a show tour around the country. Through this whole incredible experience\, she learned the importance of digital archives for the sake of history. She continues to run “Depths of Wikipedia” through not only Instagram but also Twitter (650k)\, and TikTok (140k) and does comedy and speaking engagements about Wikipedia.\n\nIn her talk\, she will talk about the importance of creating human knowledge and how Wikipedia encourages this along with adding some standup and humorous elements to her talk.\n\nDavid Siev\n\nMidwest-born and raised\, David Siev is a first-generation Cambodian-Mexican-American filmmaker. Before directing Bad Axe\, his SXSW award-winning feature debut based on his family’s restaurant in rural Michigan\, David spent his early career learning guerilla filmmaking under director Jeff Tremaine. This experience prepared David to make his directorial debut with his award-winning narrative short\, Year Zero\, based on his father’s experience of escaping Cambodia. David’s work on Bad Axe has been celebrated with numerous accolades\, including the Critic’s Choice Award for Best First Feature Documentary and he is on the Oscar shortlist for documentary features. David now lives in NYC\, focusing on developing narrative and documentary projects.\n\nIn his talk\, he will touch on the immigrant experience and the American Dream along with coming from nothing to making something of yourself in an unknown field!\n\nJi Hye Kim\n\nJi Hye Kim is the award-winning chef/owner of Miss Kim in Ann Arbor\, MI. Named one of Food & Wine’s Best New Chefs of 2021\, Ji Hye aims to broaden the understanding of Korean cuisine through her cooking. She was born in Seoul\, Korea\, and was introduced to cooking by her mother\, a talented home cook. Her family immigrated to New Jersey\, and Ji Hye went on to study political science and economics at the University of Michigan. Since Ji Hye attended U-M during the Asian financial crisis\, she had to take two years off to make cash for school through waitressing because she did not have a work permit. After years of hard work\, Ji Hye was able to finish college and open her first restaurant Miss Kim\, which has now been named one of Ann Arbor’s “Most Essential Restaurants” by Eater. At her acclaimed restaurant Miss Kim\, her seasonal menu is inspired by ancient Korean culinary traditions and adapted to local Midwestern ingredients.\n\nIn her talk\, she will touch on how we are all a complex mix of identities but society often wants to put us in one box and how to lead with empathy by creating a system that sets people up to have a more equitable workplace!

SUMMARY:Performance:Misty Lyn & The Big Beautiful
DESCRIPTION:As a fixture of the Michigan folk music scene for over a decade\, Misty Lyn Bergeron has penned haunting melodies over simple arrangements that traverse the gothic\, literary fringes of American roots music. Pulling from a wealth of vivid subject matter\, her songs are cathartic and poetically rich works that approach sometimes difficult topics such as death\, loss\, heartache\, and healing. After getting in a serious car accident in 2015\, there has been a noticeable shift toward love\, light\, and hope in her music\, while still maintaining a deep connection with the things that are lost and those that are fading. Members of The Big Beautiful include Matt Jones (drums)\, Ryan Gimpert (guitar and pedal steel)\, Carol Catherine Gray (fiddle\, vocals\, tambo)\, and Jim Roll (bass). Misty Lyn & The Big Beautiful come to The Ark with a new release\, “The Narrows.”

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Select Works By James Charles Morris
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition by James Charles Morris will be at Palmer Commons\, 4th Floor Atrium\, February 13 - March 10. \n\nAbout the Artist:\nJames Charles Morris (b. 1984)\, is a self-taught multidisciplinary artist\, who has engaged in the creative visual media practices of photography\, collage\, painting\, and printmaking for 20 years. Morris has used his work to engage in various social conversations addressing themes of race\, spirituality\, history\, mental wellness and community. As a native Detroiter\, Morris has always had a fondness for his hometown\, which is evident in his work. \n\nMorris’ artistic influence began to manifest at a very early age\, as he took found objects from around his home and created new works. However\, his familial connections also informed his development. Grandmother\, Dell Pryor\, a gallerist in the city of Detroit across four decades\, exposed James to many emerging and master artists. Some of those names that ultimately influenced and inspired Morris include Adger Cowans\, Hugh Grannum\, Lester Sloan\, Al Loving\, Gilda Snowden\, Shirley Woodson\, Anthony Barboza\, and Eric Pryor among others. \n\nIn 2008\, Morris founded Definitive Style Exclusive (DSE Detroit)\, a brand that uses an array of visual statements and designs created with a simple yet blunt approach to touch on difficult and controversial topics within our society. \n\nIn 2019\, Morris began developing an artistic style that combines collage\, photo montage\, and abstract expressionism. This collage-montage style has led Morris to create a series of figurative works\, that have engaged many within the artistic community.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Future Is With Our People: Sustainability Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Sometimes\, the solutions to the climate crisis aren’t complex technological innovations. They can be as personal as your auntie’s renegade community kitchen that she built after a natural disaster\, or cooking with your dad\, who grew up poor\, and taught you how to be resourceful in the kitchen. It can be choosing to share moments of laughter with your loved ones in a time of hardship\, or sitting on the porch with your elders and learning from their stories of the past. Too often\, climate conversations ignore these narratives of community resourcefulness and creativity in times of adversity. \n\nThe Future Is With Our People brings together work from 10+ UM students who live\, work\, play\, love\, and hope in the face of uncertainties and injustices. Through these pieces\, the artists tell stories about the customs\, communities\, relationships\, and experiences that bring them joy and a drive to demand a better future. As the climate crisis intensifies\, we must recognize that solutions often lie within us\, our communities\, and our cultures. This art exhibit attempts to express just how vital our stories can be in building a sustainable and just future for present and future generations to thrive in. \n\nJoin the Student Life Sustainabilty Cultural Organizers and the Center for Campus Involvement for an art exhibition on the first floor of the Union from Feb 13-Feb 24.

SUMMARY:Performance:Crys Matthews
DESCRIPTION:Ask about the new generation of social justice music-makers\, and Crys Matthews will be mentioned. A southeastern North Carolina native who now calls Washington\, D.C.\, home\, Crys has been compared to everyone from Toshi Reagon to Tracy Chapman and Ruthie Foster. Equally at home in an acoustic listening room as she is on stage at large music festivals\, Crys quickly gathered a loyal following on the East Coast playing such prestigious venues as the Sundance Film Festival\, The Birchmere\, The Hamilton\, and Jammin’ Java. A prolific lyricist\, Crys blends Americana\, folk\, jazz\, blues\, bluegrass\, and funk into a bold\, complex performance steeped in traditional melodies punctuated by honest\, original lyrics. “I believe in hope\,” Matthews says of her latest album\, “Changemakers.” “As a social-justice songwriter\, it is my duty to keep breathing that hope and encouragement into the people who listen to my music.” And\, from the title track to the last track\, “Changemakers” does just that all while tackling some heavy topics like immigration\, the opioid crisis\, Black Lives Matter\, and gun safety to name a few.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:The Premodern Colloquium. Cervantine Blackness
DESCRIPTION:This presentation focuses on Miguel de Cervantes’s literary archive of Blackness. It builds on previously published public engagement work from a co-authored op-ed essay with Chad Leahy that went viral\, titled “Cervantes y la materia de las vidas negras” (“Cervantes and the Matter of Black Lives”). \n\nThe proposed contribution argues for a more nuanced critical reckoning with the cultural\, historical\, and literary legacies of antiblackness within the Iberian Peninsula and the global reaches of its empire.

SUMMARY:Performance:Bill Frisell
DESCRIPTION:Bill Frisell can be a hard musician to classify. You'll find him in the jazz bins (or at the jazz link)\, and he's been called the most brilliant jazz guitarist since Wes Montgomery. But he's the kind of jazz musician who looks outward to other music\, and his guitar can do just about anything\, from any genre. It can approximate the sound of a country steel guitar\, can wail the blues\, can break new ground in music like Jimi Hendrix did. And he plays his own compositions\, each one intricately woven into the capabilities of his instrument. As a collaborator\, Bill Frisell is one of the most sought-after voices in contemporary guitar. His Ark shows have an intimacy that's hard to find at his dates in larger cities. The New York Times sums it up: \"It's hard to find a more fruitful meditation on American music than in the compositions of guitarist Bill Frisell.\"

SUMMARY:Exhibition:\"I have a crisis for you\": Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War
DESCRIPTION:An exhibit curated by Grace Mahoney and Jessica Zychowicz\nFeaturing work by Kinder Album\, JT Blatty\, Oksana Briukhovetska (MFA\, Stamps School of Art and Design)\, Oksana Kazmina\, Sonya Hukaylo\, Svetlana Lavochkina\, Kateryna Lisovenko\, and Lyuba Yakimchuk.\n \nIn February 2022\, the world witnessed the invasion of Ukraine and all-out war of aggression by the Russian Federation. Since this time\, massive casualties\, human rights violations\, and an unprecedented refugee crisis have ensued. Women artists of Ukraine have responded. They paint on found materials in refugee housing\, illustrate in bomb shelters\, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document\, create\, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful\, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.\n \nCurated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz\, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna)\, \"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War\" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters\, photographers\, filmmakers\, poets\, translators\, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war\, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a “Revolution of Dignity” against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country’s independence resulting in Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine’s east.\n \nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\n“— our love’s gone missing\, I explain to a friend/ it vanished in one of the wars/ we waged in our kitchen/ — change the word ‘war’ to ‘crisis\,’ he suggests/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.”\n \nLike in Yakimchuk’s poem\, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine\, juxtapose\, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships\, the workings interior lives\, and perceptions of social roles. The featured artworks and documents engage a range of subjects from women volunteering as combatants to the processes of grieving and reflect ongoing discourses in Ukrainian feminist scholarship.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Portraits of Feminism in Japan
DESCRIPTION:What is feminism in Japan? Rather than imagining it as a singular\, coherent object\, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity\, difference\, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts\, “feminism” in Japan can invoke sharply different associations\, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority\, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters\, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families\, workplaces\, schools\, political institutions\, and laws\, among many other contexts. Many – but certainly not all – feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects\, working toward recognition\, repair\, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\n\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Created by nine contemporary artists in Japan and the United States\, the portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of \"feminism\" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences\, needs\, and activism within Japan. This exhibit also spotlights the history of Japanese studies at the University of Michigan in conjunction with the Center for Japanese Studies' 75th anniversary celebration. \n\n“Portraits of Feminism in Japan” is open for viewing M-F 9am-4pm or by appointment. University of Michigan instructors can email LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu to request a group tour or schedule a class visit.\n\nFeatured artists:\nElaine Cromie\, JenClare B. Gawaran\, Takatoshi Hayashi\, ivokuma (いぼくま)\, Nami Kaneko (金子奈美)\, Kang Jungsook\, Lisa Taka Miyagi\, Nancy Nishihira (西平・ナンシー)\, and Shigeki Shibata (柴田滋紀)\n\nCuration team: \nAllison Alexy\, Bradly Hammond\, Grace Mahoney\, and Alexandria Molinari

DESCRIPTION:About the Exhibition\nNicole Marroquin is an interdisciplinary artist\, researcher\, and educator whose practice explores spatial justice and Latinx history. Deeply rooted in community\, she cultivates and reaffirms the human connections that ultimately sustain us. Her recent work explores the emergent themes of belonging as seen through the histories of student rebellions in Chicago public schools between 1968 and 1980.\n\nHer site-specific installation *With Care*\, created for the Institute for the Humanities Gallery\, presents the documentary photographs of influential Mexican-born artist\, teacher\, and friend Diana Solís in visual dialogue with Marroquin’s own creative work which includes ceramic sculptures and printmaking. Solís’s photography reflects over 25 years of transnational Chicana and lesbian organizing primarily in Chicago and Mexico City between 1975 and 1990. \n\nAbout the Artist\nNicole Marroquin is an interdisciplinary artist\, researcher\, and teacher educator whose work explores spatial justice and Latinx history.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:PSC Brownbag Series: Critical quantitative methodology: MIMIC models to identify and remediate racial (and other) forms of measurement bias
DESCRIPTION:The PSC Brown Bag Series runs live and on Zoom this year\, Mondays from 12 to 12:50 p.m.\n\nMatthew Diemer of U-M Education and Psychology and ISR's PSC and RCGD presents::\n\nCritical quantitative methodology: MIMIC models to identify and remediate racial (and other) forms of measurement bias\n\nThe emerging Critical Quantitative (CQ) perspective is anchored by five guiding principles (i.e.\, foundation\, goals\, parity\, subjectivity\, and self-reflexivity) to mitigate racism and advance social justice. Within this broader methodological perspective\, sound measurement is foundational to the quantitative enterprise. Despite the problematic history of measurement\, it can be repurposed for critical and equitable ends. MIMIC (Multiple Indicator and MultIple Causes) models are a measurement strategy to simply and efficiently test whether a measure means the same thing and can be measured in the same way across groups (e.g.\, racial/ethnic and/or gender). Briefly\, MIMIC models are variants of confirmatory factor analyses\, which include an exogenous covariate(s) to test for latent mean differences as well as for differences in items (“DIF\,” or differential item functioning in psychometrics parlance). This talk considers the affordances and limitations of MIMICs for critical quantitative methods\, by detecting and mitigating racial\, ethnic\, gendered\, and other forms of bias in items and in measures.\n\nThis PSC event is co-sponsored by ISR's Inclusive Research Matters Series.\n\nJoin us in person at ISR (Thompson Street) Room 1430.\n\nOr online: Join Zoom Meeting\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/95418610585?pwd=Z0cvdkF1T0R2cG1lRDEvVmlnbVdlZz09

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:RCGD Winter Seminar Series: Political Embarrassment and Partisan Cooperation
DESCRIPTION:Political Embarrassment and Partisan Cooperation\nMonday\, Feb. 20\, 2023 (3:30 PM – 5:00 PM)\n\nJennifer Wolak\nProfessor of Political Science\nMichigan State University\n\nIn a time of affective polarization and partisan division\, how can Americans be encouraged to cooperate with the opposing side? I consider how emotional reactions to politics motivate people to consider compromise. While negative emotions like anger can lead people to rally in support of their partisan side\, I argue that another negative emotion – embarrassment – can instead encourage people to think about politics in more principled ways. In recent years\, many Americans have said that politics makes them feel embarrassed. I show that these feelings of embarrassment can be a civic good\, encouraging people to move past their partisan commitments. As a reaction to a sense of violated social norms\, embarrassment affects how people think politics should be practiced. I draw on both experimental and survey evidence to demonstrate that when people feel embarrassed\, they are more likely to defend the democratic norm of compromise.\n\nDr. Jennifer Wolak is a professor of political science at Michigan State University. She studies how Americans understand politics and what motivates their political behavior. Much of her work focuses on political psychology\, including the effects of emotions on political decision-making and the effects of personality and socialization on the development of political attitudes. She is the author of Compromise in an Age of Party Polarization\, published by Oxford University Press in 2020.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student Combinatorics: Matroids\, Grassmannians\, and Dressians part II
DESCRIPTION:Matroids are combinatorial objects\, whose axioms attempt to capture possible independence relations among a finite set of vectors. It turns out that this is impossible to do. In fact\, as the size of the base set grows larger\, the probability that a matroid cannot be realized by a set of vectors approaches 1. We will review the definition of a matroid and talk about tropical Grassmannians and Dressians\, and their positive parts. We will conclude with the result that all positively oriented matroids are realizable (Ardila-Rincon-Williams\, 2017).

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Ann Arbor's First Orthodox Priest
DESCRIPTION:Who was the first Orthodox Priest of Ann Arbor\, and what can we learn from his life story today? This talk will follow the twists and turns in the life of Father Agathangelos\, the first Greek-Orthodox priest to serve the spiritual needs of Ann Arbor nearly a century ago\, and reflect on its broader meanings for Greek Orthodoxy in America. \n\nFather Agathangelos was born and raised in Ottoman Cappadocia (central Anatolia) at the end of the nineteenth century\, but his life was upended with the Greco-Turkish Population Exchange of 1923 (whose centennial we honor this year). The Exchange was at the time an unprecedented act of ethnic cleansing: The Republic of Turkey stripped nearly one and a half million indigenous Anatolian Christians of their citizenship and uprooted them to Greece\, which in turn stripped Greek citizenship from nearly half a million indigenous Muslims of Greece and uprooted them to Turkey. This Compulsory Exchange upended the lives of nearly two million souls and set an international precedent for partition and forced population movements in later decades.\n\nThis talk will follow the refugee life and migrations of Father Agathangelos -- who\, in addition to being a priest\, was also a poet\, a novelist\, and an iconographer -- through his artwork and the traces he left behind. His first and only fluent language was Turkish\, which he wrote in the Greek alphabet\, known as \"Karamanlidika Turkish.\" His poetry and his art reflect the rich cultural confluence of Anatolia before the Exchange\, and it was this culture that he carried with him into refugeehood and his later migration to the United States. What can his life tell us about the enumenical breadth and cultural riches of Greek Orthodoxy in America? You are all warmly invited to join in this lecture and to share your own perspectives in an open-forum Q&A afterward.\n\nWilliam Stroebel is an Assistant Professor of Modern Greek and Comparative Literature in the departments of Classical Studies and Comparative Literature at the University of Michigan. His research focuses on recovering the refugee literatures displaced by the Greco-Turkish Population Exchange of 1923. The lecture will be accompanied with refreshments and a reception after the Q&A.
