DESCRIPTION:Trace how astronomy was developed\, studied\, and disseminated through the centuries\, from 1500 BCE to the Renaissance. On display is material drawn from the University of Michigan collections dealing with the history of early astronomy: manuscripts\, early printed books\, and artifacts illustrating Mesopotamian\, Greek\, Islamic\, and Western European astronomy.\n\nThis exhibit and its permanent online counterpart (https://umlib.us/earlyastronomy) are part of the Aratus Project\, which was sponsored by the National Science Foundation and led by Prof. Francesca Schironi. The core of the project has been to study Aratus’ \"Phaenomena\,\" the most important poem on stars and constellations of the Graeco-Roman ancient world\, and its exegetical tradition. DESCRIPTION:Prison Creative Arts Project presents an exhibition of collaborative photography at the Detroit Historical Museum (5401 Woodward Ave. in Detroit)\, open now through May 21st.\n\nA public reception will be held on March 9th\, 6:00–9:00 PM\, with a panel of previous workshop participants at 7:00 PM.\n\nWe hope you will be able to see the exhibit\, and please be in touch if you have any questions.\n\nHumanize the Numbers shows the perspectives of men in Michigan prisons. The prison system regulates every part of an inmate's identity. Instead of using their name\, they are given an ID number. Visiting room photos and mug shots are tightly regulated. Personal info is recorded: height\, weight\, etc. In the process\, their humanity is denied.\n\nThis exhibit at the Detroit Historical Museum reveals the faces and stories of those in prison. It lifts up the voices of those who have been silenced by the criminal legal system. The Humanize the Numbers project gives them a freedom not normally allowed in prison. DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

DESCRIPTION:Trace how astronomy was developed\, studied\, and disseminated through the centuries\, from 1500 BCE to the Renaissance. On display is material drawn from the University of Michigan collections dealing with the history of early astronomy: manuscripts\, early printed books\, and artifacts illustrating Mesopotamian\, Greek\, Islamic\, and Western European astronomy.\n\nThis exhibit and its permanent online counterpart (https://umlib.us/earlyastronomy) are part of the Aratus Project\, which was sponsored by the National Science Foundation and led by Prof. Francesca Schironi. The core of the project has been to study Aratus’ \"Phaenomena\,\" the most important poem on stars and constellations of the Graeco-Roman ancient world\, and its exegetical tradition. The prison system regulates every part of an inmate's identity. Instead of using their name\, they are given an ID number. Visiting room photos and mug shots are tightly regulated. Personal info is recorded: height\, weight\, etc. In the process\, their humanity is denied.\n\nThis exhibit at the Detroit Historical Museum reveals the faces and stories of those in prison. It lifts up the voices of those who have been silenced by the criminal legal system. The Humanize the Numbers project gives them a freedom not normally allowed in prison. DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

UNICEF defines child marriage as \"a harmful practice and a violation of child rights and believes that marriage under age 18 should be prohibited in all circumstances\, everywhere.\"  Both UNICEF and the United Nations declare child marriage a human rights violation.\n\nWhile our gala seeks to celebrate the work of our incredible members over the past academic year\, and recognize and send off our seniors\,  we also hope to inspire our university community to take action with us in an effort to protect children.  \n\n\nUNICEF at Michigan also welcomes three special guests:\n\nDr. Fatma Müge Göçek: Dr. Göçek is UNICEF UM's faculty advisor and Professor of Sociology at the University of Michigan.\n\nHer research focuses on the comparative analysis of history\, politics\, and gender in the first and third worlds. She critically analyzes the impact of processes such as development\, nationalism\, religious movements\, and collective violence on minorities. She is currently working on a theory book\, constructing social theory from the vantage point of minorities. SUMMARY:Exhibition:CCPS Exhibition. Survivors Saving Survivors: Photographing the Ukrainian Refugee Experience in Poland
DESCRIPTION:In April and June 2022\, at the invitation of JCC Krakow\, Chuck Fishman traveled to Poland to document the JCC and the Jewish community’s commitment to helping Ukrainian refugees fleeing their war-torn country. What he witnessed and captured in a series of gripping photographs is *tikkun olam*\, a central concept in Judaism that denotes activities that repair and improve the world we live in. The exhibit shifts the lens away from the horror the refugees have endured to focus instead on human goodness and how it can overcome lingering evil.\n\nIn his 45-year career\, freelance photographer Chuck Fishman has focused on social and political issues with a strong humanistic concern. His work on Jewish life in Poland\, begun in 1975\, continues to the present day. Fishman’s work has been extensively published\, exhibited\, and collected worldwide\, and has earned him prestigious World Press Photo Foundation medals four times. His photographs have appeared on the covers of *Time*\, *Life*\, *Fortune*\, *Newsweek*\, *The London Sunday Times*\, *The Economist*\, and numerous others. Fishman’s work is included in the collections of the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery\, the United Nations POLIN: The Museum of the History of Polish Jews\, and the Stanford University and New York Public Libraries\, to name a few\, as well as private and corporate collections.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at weisercenter@umich.edu. DESCRIPTION:About the Exhibition\nAs part of the artist's vision for this project\, the installation will be activated on opening night with a collective response to the objects\, the space\, and the archives within. Facilitated by: Ricky Weaver\, Viktor Givens\, Bryce Detroit\, Andrew Wilson\, and Efe Bes.\n\nAbout the Artist\nRicky Weaver is an image-based artist\, theorist\, and mother\, born in Ypsilanti\, MI. Her art and theory are centered around the lexicon generated through black women's everyday practices\, dark sousveillance\, and images as objects that alchemize the archive on a quantum level. She is currently teaching at ArtCenter College of Art and Design in Pasadena\, CA as a fellow for the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design. Weaver is represented by David Klein Gallery and has shown work at Art Miami\, the Havana Biennale\, Sofa Expo\, and more. Her work has been acquired by institutions like the Wedge Collection and published in Aperture’s As We Rise: Photography from the Black Atlantic.\n\nWeaver was named one of LensCulture's Critics Choice Artists of 2020\, selected by Susan Thompson\, associate curator at the Guggenheim Museum. She also participated in the Independent Scholar Fellowship at The Carr Center where she was mentored by Carrie Mae Weems. She earned an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art and a BFA from Eastern Michigan University\, with a concentration in photography. \n\nWeaver recently presented a paper titled “How I Got Over: The Meta-Archive and other registers” at Black Portraitures VII hosted by Rutgers University. Most recently she has taken on the role of lead visual consultant\, specializing in image theory and photography\, for the Global Institute for Black Girls in Film and Media.\n\nThis project is made possible by a grant from the Mellon Foundation as part of the Institute for the Humanities' multi-year High Stakes Art initiative.

DESCRIPTION:Trace how astronomy was developed\, studied\, and disseminated through the centuries\, from 1500 BCE to the Renaissance. On display is material drawn from the University of Michigan collections dealing with the history of early astronomy: manuscripts\, early printed books\, and artifacts illustrating Mesopotamian\, Greek\, Islamic\, and Western European astronomy.\n\nThis exhibit and its permanent online counterpart (https://umlib.us/earlyastronomy) are part of the Aratus Project\, which was sponsored by the National Science Foundation and led by Prof. Francesca Schironi. The core of the project has been to study Aratus’ \"Phaenomena\,\" the most important poem on stars and constellations of the Graeco-Roman ancient world\, and its exegetical tradition. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Portraits of Feminism in Japan
DESCRIPTION:What is feminism in Japan? Rather than imagining it as a singular\, coherent object\, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity\, difference\, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts\, “feminism” in Japan can invoke sharply different associations\, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority\, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters\, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families\, workplaces\, schools\, political institutions\, and laws\, among many other contexts. Many ­– but certainly not all – feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects\, working toward recognition\, repair\, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\n\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Created by nine contemporary artists in Japan and the United States\, the portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of \"feminism\" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences\, needs\, and activism within Japan. This exhibit also spotlights the history of Japanese studies at the University of Michigan in conjunction with the Center for Japanese Studies' 75th anniversary celebration. \n\n“Portraits of Feminism in Japan” is open for viewing M-F 9am-4pm or by appointment. DESCRIPTION:The *27th Annual Exhibition of Artists in Michigan Prisons* showcases the hard work and talents of artists incarcerated in Michigan prisons. \n\nThe work is by men and women from all 25 state prisons in both the upper and the lower peninsulas: 24 men’s prisons and 1 women’s prison. \n\nThis year there are 645 works in two and three dimensions\, including portraits\, tattoo imagery\, landscapes\, fantasy\, and wildlife as well as images about incarceration and visions that are entirely new. \n\nWe invite you to enjoy the work and\, if you like\, make a purchase. DESCRIPTION:The Center for Cell Plasticity and Organ Design (CPOD) is pleased to announce this competitive award program which aims to help talented junior investigators launch a successful independent research career. CPOD Scholars will receive funds to perform exploratory studies or generate a new research model\, and an individualized mentoring committee to guide project development and grant submission. This program takes advantage of the broad base of Center members and extends our training impact in a new and exciting direction.\n\n \nThe CPOD Emerging Scholars Program supports early-stage faculty or senior postdoctoral fellows transitioning to a faculty position at the University of Michigan. This competitive award ($25\,000 total over a 2 year period) provides mentoring for talented junior investigators working to develop an independent research program. The mentoring committee will advise the Emerging Scholar on research priorities and assist with the development of a grant proposal (R01\, K01\, etc.). Register at: https://myumi.ch/Jpd45\n   \nLast year saw both South Korea and Japan transformed by traumatic public events that have rekindled the debate over how these two countries with poor track-records in mental health and some of the highest suicide rates in the world deal with the repercussions of mass trauma. The Halloween stampede in Seoul\, which resulted in 159 people dead and scores more injured\, and the assassination of Japan's longest serving prime minister in Japan\, Shinzo Abe\, several months earlier\, have left the East Asian societies in need of mourning\, only to see the domestic debate overtaken by domestic politics. That has left the victims—and the societies at large—with unanswered questions about the state of public mental health. To address these questions\, the roundtable will bring together two journalists with extensive experience in East Asia covering politics and society to discuss the role of media in managing mass trauma.\n   \nKyeongRak Min is a reporter in the media strategy department for Korea’s Yonhap News Agency\, where he has covered the economy\, finance\, social affairs and North Korea. He has done extensive reporting on the societal and policy roots of Korea’s high suicide rate\, and directed a short film about Seoul’s “Suicide Bridge.” Before working as a reporter\, Min produced documentaries for the Wonju station of MBC\, a major South Korean broadcasting company. Min majored in public administration at Yonsei University and earned a master’s degree in economics at Yonsei Graduate School.\n   \nAntoni Slodkowski was the Tokyo correspondent for the Financial Times and the deputy bureau chief at Reuters in Tokyo. In that role\, Slodkowski led the bureau’s politics and general news team and its coverage of the Olympics and the pandemic. He returned to Japan after four years in Myanmar\, where his team covered the ethnic cleansing of the Rohingya\, winning the Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting. A native of Poland\, Slodkowski is a graduate of the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies.\n   \nModerated by Ann Lin\, Director\, Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies & Professor\, Gerald R. DESCRIPTION:Fighting Phantoms: Disagreement vs. Disdain in the American Body Politic\nMonday\, April 3\, 2023 (3:30 PM – 5:00 PM)\n\nEli Finkel\nProfessor of Psychology\nKellogg School of Management\nNorthwestern University\n\nAccording to legend\, Ben Franklin informed a Philadelphia lady in 1787 that the Constitutional Convention had created a republic rather than a monarchy—“if you can keep it.” But what can individual citizens do to “keep” a republic? In his Farewell Address nine years later\, George Washington offered a potential answer: resist extreme partisanship.\n\nThis presentation considers whether partisanship in America today poses a threat to the Republic. Ideological and policy disagreement among American partisans is modest\, but feelings toward opposing partisans is curdling from dislike into hatred. A major foundation for this hatred is a distorted perception of opposing partisans\, which means that we may be fighting phantoms rather than adversaries.\n\nThere are many ways to mitigate the most corrosive elements of our politics\, but they will be difficult to implement insofar as we—the individuals who make up America’s body politic—prize partisan victory over democratic norms.

DESCRIPTION:Part of the Meet the Author Series. In the ancient Mediterranean world\, the sick and injured visited sites associated with healing deities in order to be cured. In Palestine\, ritual cures were often sought at sites associated with water\, and especially at the thermal-mineral springs. This talk will show how evidence from Hammat Gader and Hammat Tiberias indicates that Jews and Christians bathed in these springs alongside devotees of Asclepius\, hoping that a divine healer would appear to them in a dream and heal them. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Special CM-AMO Seminar | Optically-active solid-state spins in photonic platforms for quantum science and technology
DESCRIPTION:Optically-active solid-state spin systems can offer remarkable single photon emission properties (brightness and indistinguishability)\, which makes them useful for developing photonic quantum simulators and building blocks of quantum networks. In this talk\, I will present the efforts of studying the fundamental physics of optically-active spin systems and integrating these systems in photonic platforms for quantum technologies. First\, I will describe all-optical implementations of NMR-inspired protocols for controlling the quantum state of optically-active spins and for the diffraction-limited probing of their nuclear environment. Then\, I will discuss the process of coupling optically-active spins to photonic cavities\, which provides spin-dependent optical switching capabilities. Finally\, I will focus on the applications of spins in photonic platforms for simulating quantum dynamics under complex Hamiltonians\, as well as toward the demonstration of photonic repeaters for the efficient distribution of quantum information.

DESCRIPTION:Please join us Monday\, April 3 at 4:15 in the Robertson Auditorium (Ross School of Business) as Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook shares her views regarding monetary policy\, the state of the economy and prospects going forward. \n\nLisa D. Cook took office as a member of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System on May 23\, 2022\, to fill an unexpired term ending January 31\, 2024.\n\nPrior to her appointment to the Board\, Dr. Cook was a professor of economics and international relations at Michigan State University. She was also a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research.\n\nPreviously\, Dr. Cook was on the faculty of Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government. During her time at Harvard\, Dr. Cook also served as deputy director for Africa Research at the Center for International Development. Before then\, she was a National Fellow at Stanford University.\n\nFrom 2011 to 2012\, Dr. Cook served as a senior economist on the Council of Economic Advisers under President Barack Obama. From 2000 to 2001\, she served as a senior adviser on finance and development in the U.S. Department of Treasury's Office of International Affairs.\n\nDr. Cook received a BA in philosophy from Spelman College. As a Marshall Scholar\, she received a second BA in philosophy\, politics\, and economics from Oxford University. She earned a PhD in economics from the University of California\, Berkeley.

DESCRIPTION:Title: Higher Modularity of Elliptic Curves\n\nAbstract: Elliptic curves E over the rational numbers are modular: this means there is a nonconstant map from a modular curve to E. When instead the coefficients of E belong to a function field\, it still makes sense to talk about the modularity of E (and this is known)\, but one can also extend the idea further and ask whether E is \"r-modular\" for r=2\,3.... To define this generalization\, the modular curve gets replaced with Drinfeld's concept of a \"shtuka space\". The r-modularity of E is predicted by Tate's conjecture. In joint work with Adam Logan\, we give some classes of elliptic curves E which are 2- and 3-modular.

He uses music not only to bring art and culture into this world\, but he also uses it as a platform to advocate for the Armenian community. This event is geared towards having a discussion in which we can use our strengths and passions to advocate about things that are the most important to the communities we belong to. The event will be held on April 3rd from 7-10 pm inside the Rogel Ballroom at the Michigan Union. This event aims to raise awareness of the importance of charitable donations and to support the work of the Sadr Foundation. The Sadr foundation seeks to bring about social justice\, change\, and equality by working closely with local communities and those abroad in Lebanon and other places in desperate need. SUMMARY:Performance:Cowboy Junkies
DESCRIPTION:Cowboy Junkies are a Canadian alternative country/blues/folk rock band. The group was formed in Toronto in 1985 by Margo Timmins (vocalist)\, Michael Timmins (songwriter\, guitarist)\, Peter Timmins (drummer) and Alan Anton (bassist). The Junkies first performed publicly at the Beverley Tavern and other clubs in Toronto’s Queen Street West\, including The Rivoli. Their 1986 debut album\, produced by Canadian producer Peter Moore\, was the blues-inspired “Whites Off Earth Now!!\,” recorded using an ambisonic microphone in the family garage. The group’s fame spread with their second album\, “The Trinity Session\,” recorded in 1987 at Toronto’s Church of the Holy Trinity. Their sound\, again using the ambisonic microphone\, and their mix of blues\, country\, folk\, rock and jazz earned them both critical attention and a cult following. The Los Angeles Times named the recording as one of the ten best albums of 1988. In the early 1990s Margo Timmins was named one of the 50 most beautiful people in the world by People. The group has continued to tour North America\, Europe\, Japan and Australia. In 2008\, they released Trinity Revisited in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the original recording of The Trinity Session. These days\, Cowboy Junkies shows revisit old material in creative ways\, but they always bring new music as well.
