DESCRIPTION:“100 Years of Polish Independence: Zakopane 1918” is an exhibition of photographs from the archives of the Tatra Museum in Zakopane\, Poland. It tells the unique story of the short-lived Republic of Zakopane\, which was established in the concluding weeks of the First World War. The Copernicus Program in Polish Studies has curated the exhibit and organized public lectures in collaboration with the Tatra Museum\, the Adam Mickiewicz Institute in Warsaw\, and Culture.pl as part of POLSKA 100\, an international cultural program commemorating the centenary of Poland regaining Independence. It is financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage of the Republic of Poland as part of the multi-year program NIEPODLEGŁA 2017-22.

DESCRIPTION:Dennis Nahabetian’s metal sculptures captivate the viewer with their exquisite detail and refined beauty. Combining a masterful use of metal and textile techniques\, Nahabetian carefully constructs objects that simultaneously harness light while projecting complex linear shadows. A native of Michigan\, Nahabetian received his BFA from Eastern Michigan University and MFA form Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. He currently lives and has his studio in Orchard Park\, New York\, near Buffalo. Nahabetian has work in many public and private collections and has exhibited at a variety of venues for over 25 years.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Image Vessels: Blown Glass
DESCRIPTION:Sculptor Herb Babcock creates both monumental and human-scale work using metal\, glass and stone. In the early years of the American Studio Glass Movement (1974-1984) Babcock’s sculptural and painterly expression utilized the vessel format. By layering color — both mass and line — between gathers of clear\, molten glass\, the full compositions are viewed through the vessel as three-dimensional. Babcock is Professor Emeritus\, College for Creative Studies. He was Section Chair of the Glass Department where he taught for 40 years. He lives in Ann Arbor and built a new studio near U-M north campus in 2016.

DESCRIPTION:Sharon Will’s commitment to painting is to capture the simple\, everyday beauty around her in her native Michigan and beyond. She is passionate about painting plein air (outdoors) whenever possible\, as she feels the direct observation from life is the best teacher to truly see the subtleties of light and color in nature. Working on sanded paper\, her process begins with a pastel and alcohol/mineral spirits under-painting wash to establish value and color. Soft pastel is applied in layers\, often in contrasting color and temperatures for vibrancy. Over her 35-year career in painting\, Will has won numerous national awards. She also operates a custom framing business from her home/studio in Washington Township and teaches occasional workshops.

DESCRIPTION:Most members of Paradigm art quilt group are professional artists based in southeast Michigan who create work\, teach and lecture. Although most of their artwork is textile based\, members use many different techniques. The theme of this exhibit is Inspired\, and the art quilts on display incorporate elements of assemblage\, collage and painting. The exhibit showcases the round robin approach that guided the creation of the work: the first artist made something which inspired the work of the second artist\, which inspired the work of the third artist\, and so on. A brief statement about the inspiration is included with each piece.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Mystery Train: Oil on Linen
DESCRIPTION:Gregg Chadwick grew up with the rails of America in his blood. His grandfather Arthur Desch stoked coal in steam engines before becoming a train engineer on the Jersey Central Line. At family gatherings in Chadwick’s grandparent’s home\, his aunts and cousins played music to the rhythms of the trains outside. From Junior Parker\, Elvis Presley\, Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash\, to arts writers and directors Greil Marcus and Jim Jarmusch\, the enduring mythos of America and its legacy has been wrapped up in the blues notes of the song “Mystery Train”. Chadwick’s current series of paintings\, Mystery Train\, is steeped in the powerful echoes of those machine days.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Steeped in Whimsy: Ceramic Teapots
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition features a selection of Elena Weissman’s hand-built ceramic teapots created over the last two decades. The teapots are playful interpretations of many everyday objects. In addition to ceramics and photography\, Weismann works in paper arts\, book making\, fused glass\, beads\, mosaics\, metalwork and painting. Her photography can be seen in several professional buildings in the Detroit metropolitan area\, as well as in many personal collections. In addition to participating in art exhibits and juried art shows\, she has also created commissioned works in glass mosaics as well as a number of large custom ceramic tile art installations.

DESCRIPTION:Ruth Crowe graduated from Texas Woman’s University in Denton\, Texas with a degree in Art Education. She served in the US Army and was a Los Angeles Police Dept. officer and collegiate softball coach. In 2014\, in her Ann Arbor backyard studio\, Crowe began her current work with encaustics and image transfer processes. She creates her multi-media works by combining personal and vintage photography with wax on wood. In addition to exhibiting her work in Ann Arbor and Toledo\, Ohio\, Crowe also shows at the Water Street Gallery in Douglas\, Michigan. In 2018\, Crowe presented her work at the Ann Arbor Art Fair\, the Original.

DESCRIPTION:The Yankee Air Museum dedicates itself to educating individuals about the history of US military aviation. Located at the historic Willow Run Airport\, just east of Ann Arbor\, where over 8\,600 B-24 Liberator Bomber aircraft were produced during World War II\, the Yankee Air Museum seeks to keep the history of the ‘Arsenal of Democracy’ alive. The Willow Run Bomber Plant is home to ‘Rosie the Riveter\,’ the iconic symbol of the thousands of women who poured into industrial factories to help the war effort during WWII. This exhibition features unique artifacts from the US home-front\, the Willow Run Bomber Plant\, and local WWII aviators from Ann Arbor.

DESCRIPTION:The mobility and displacement of the Black body\, from port to holding cell\, to ward and out\, is a history that is embedded in our communities socially\, culturally and geographically. Alluding to feelings of pain\, otherness\, power and triumph\, \"she was here\, once\" features work that illustrates a moment of remembrance and reflection on the women who have roamed these spaces before us.\n\nIn summer 2018\, artist Nastassja Swift organized a collaborative workshop and public performance in her home city of Richmond\, Virginia. Using a range of choreographed movement\, sound\, and solidarity\, eight Black women and girls\, wearing large needle felted wool masks\, traced the ancestral footprints of the arrival of the Black body in Richmond. The 3.5 mile walk began in Shockoe Bottom (the site of the importation of slaves into Richmond\, and one of the largest sources of slave trade in America) and concluded in the Jackson Ward neighborhood (one of the largest Black communities in Richmond).\n\nThe multi-layered piece has produced a short film\, mini documentary\, photography\, and performance masks\, on display in her solo exhibition\, \"she was here\, once\" in Lane Hall.\n\nLane Hall Gallery is open to the public weekdays from 8am - 4pm. Class visits are encouraged.\n\nAccessibility: Ramp and elevator access at the E. Washington Street entrance (by the loading dock). There are accessible restrooms on the south end of Lane Hall\, on each floor of the building. DESCRIPTION:This exhibit provides a platform to begin understanding the effects of rising sea levels along the coasts of Indonesia\, Bangladesh\, The Netherlands\, Italy and the United States.\n\nBy the end of the century oceans are predicted to rise between .3 and 2.5 meters\, which will result in major flooding in coastal cities around the world. The Sinking Cities Project aims to document this inundation through the stories of residents and the changing landscape of their cities.\n\nThis photo and video exhibit was produced by Marcin Szczepanski\, visual communications director at Michigan Engineering\, and Frank Sedlar\, Michigan Engineering alumnus.\n\nJoin us for an exhibit opening event on November 16th\, 4:00-7:00 p.m.\, in the Clark Library.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Written Culture of Christian Egypt: Coptic Manuscripts from the University of Michigan Collection
DESCRIPTION:The dry climate of the Egyptian desert offers an ideal environment for the preservation of ancient artifacts. As the sands of Egypt has preserved also numerous Coptic manuscripts\, the transmission of the literary heritage of Egyptian Christians can be documented quite well from its beginnings in the 4th century CE until its decline in the 12th-13th centuries CE\, when it was completely superseded by Arabic. This exhibit aims to show some of the hallmarks of Coptic literature using manuscripts kept in the Special Collections Research Center of the University of Michigan Library. Topics explored include the main Coptic dialects\; bilingualism in Egypt\; books read by the Egyptian monks\; and the works of Shenoute the Great\, the most important author of Coptic literature.\n\nThis exhibit is curated by Dr. Frank Feder and Dr. Alin Suciu from the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities. The exhibit and related programming are offered with support from the Department of Middle East Studies and the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology.\n\nJoin us for an opening lecture and reception at 4:30 p.m. on November 12 in the Hatcher Library Gallery.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Clinical Science Brown Bag: Linking Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) into Developmental Psychopathology: Self-regulation and its Neural Correlates as Intervention Targets in Early Childhood
DESCRIPTION:Early childhood interventions might help prevent progression towards chronic impairment. However\, current treatments for child psychopathology are often ineffective and difficult to access\, with as many as 50% of children continuing to suffer from mental health problems even after treatment. To pave the way for more effective treatment and prevention strategies\, the Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) project launched by the National Institute of Mental Health has been championed as a systematic framework for linking symptoms (e.g.\, internalizing)\, across the normal to abnormal range\, to behavior and neural circuits indexing constructs of relevance to psychopathology. Nonetheless\, integrating RDoC into developmental psychopathology\, especially the application of RDoC to early childhood\, has been understudied. \n\nTo fulfill the promise of RDoC and integrate RDoC into developmental psychopathology\, I argue that it is critical to 1) identify and establish early behavioral markers that could differentiate typical vs atypical development over time\; 2) link these early behavioral markers to neurobiological mechanisms that are associated with emotional maladjustment\; and 3) understand how these behavioral and neural markers could be modulated via intervention. In this talk\, I will first examine whether specific self-regulation skills at age 3 are related to the development of internalizing and externalizing trajectories across time. Then I will link identified self-regulation vulnerabilities to neural correlates (i.e.\, error-related negativity\; ERN) to understand the development of internalizing problems among preschoolers. Finally\, I will conclude with my ongoing direction of targeting self-regulation and its neural correlates via self-regulation trainings as novel intervention for children with internalizing problems.

DESCRIPTION:In keeping with artist David Opdyke’s previous work\, this site-specific installation serves as a critique of U.S. culture and politics. In an era of fake news and daily hyperbole\, Opdyke literally changes the picture by hand painting on 528 vintage postcards of well-known American landmarks and destinations. The postcards are assembled into a large mural--a vast gridded landscape beset by environmental chaos. Each card is placed to fit into the overall image\, and carefully modified with the gouache to show a realistically rendered piece of the overall turmoil.\n\nThe installation also features animated shorts and script-driven video\, which take place within the visual confines of one or more postcards. The animation is inspired\, in part\, by Terry Gilliam’s animation work on Monty Python’s \"Flying Circus\" and by the classical music sound effects in the Road Runner cartoons.\n\nAbout David Opdyke:\nDavid Opdyke is a draughtsman\, sculptor\, and animator known for his trenchant political send-ups of American culture. Born in Schenectady\, NY in 1969\, he graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a degree in painting and sculpture. His work is informed by the massive industrial and corporate restructuring he witnessed growing up\, namely the abandonment of the city center by manufacturing giants General Electric and ALCO. As GE shifted resources to neighboring Niskayuna\, the disparities became hard for Opdyke to ignore. Massive\, decaying factories\, an empty interstate loop\, and unemployment were downtown\; new streets\, expensive homes\, sushi and shopping malls were in the suburbs.\n\nFor 20 years Opdyke worked as a scenic painter and architectural model-maker. Ranging from intricate miniature constructions to room-sized installations\, his artwork explores globalization\, consumerism\, and civilization’s abusive relationship with the environment.\n\nThis project is supported by a grant from the Efroymson Family Fund.

DESCRIPTION:Elizabeth Youngblood is a Detroit-based artist trained and working in a variety of media disciplines including fiber and clay. Recent work is based on drawing/mark making\, with a developing body of photographic work. Both consider themes relating to the passage of time\, but in ways particular the each medium.\n\nYoungblood earned a BFA in ceramics is from The University of Michigan\, School of Art (now The Stamps School of Art & Design) and an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art working with Katherine McCoy.\n\nSince returning to Detroit after living and working in New York City\, Philadelphia\, and other cities in Pennsylvania and New Jersey\, and teaching at a range of colleges and universities\, Youngblood now maintains a full-time studio practice. Her art is exhibited locally and nationally\, and is represented in both private and public collections.\n\nThe Opening Reception for the Artist will take place on Wednesday\, January 16 from 4-6pm. Refreshments will be served\, and Elizabeth will give a Q&A at approx. 4:30pm.

DESCRIPTION:The Special Collections Research Center is excited to display a variety of nineteenth and twentieth century children's books made of cloth and related materials.\n\nThe market for children’s books expanded over the course of the nineteenth century\, as childhood mortality rates dropped and literacy rates rose. British and American publishers sought to create “indestructible” books that would appeal to the parents and teachers of very young children. Linen and muslin proved to be practical and appealing materials for such books\, which were usually printed with bright colors and comparatively little text.\n\nCloth books remained popular for almost a century before the cloth rationing of World War II shifted production towards heavy-duty paper substitutes\, such as “linenette.”

SUMMARY:Presentation:Developmental Brown Bag: Computational psychiatry approaches to understanding developmental risk factors for externalizing psychopathology
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Several recent and ongoing large-scale studies of child and adolescent development have succeeded in collecting rich longitudinal data from psychosocial\, behavioral and neural levels of analysis. Although these projects offer researchers an unprecedented opportunity to investigate developmental factors that contribute to mental health outcomes\, they also present significant challenges due to the need to draw interpretable conclusions from high-dimensional data and integrate measurements over several levels of analysis. The emerging field of computational psychiatry\, which emphasizes the use of mathematically-specified models for measuring clinically-relevant mechanistic processes that underlie observed behavioral and/or neural data\, offers potential solutions. I will present a brief overview of this approach and two specific applications. The first involves the use of a mathematical model of go/no-go task performance to clarify mechanistic processes indexed by task-related neural activations in late adolescence and inform the prediction of substance use in emerging adulthood. The second involves efforts to use linear growth modeling to assess relationships between pubertal timing\, risk for substance abuse in adolescence\, and individual differences in reward evaluation circuitry which may mediate that risk. These lines of research suggest that quantitative model-based approaches can facilitate the use of large-scale longitudinal data sets to better understand and predict externalizing psychopathology.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:HEP-Astro Seminar | Simulating structure formation in different environments and the application on massive neutrinos
DESCRIPTION:The observables of the large-scale structure such as galaxy number density generally depends on the density environment (of a few hundred Mpc). The dependence can traditionally be studied by performing gigantic cosmological N-body simulations and measuring the observables in different density environments. Alternatively\, we perform the so-called \"separate universe simulations\"\, in which the effect of the environment is absorbed into the change of the cosmological parameters. For example\, an overdense region is equivalent to a universe with positive curvature\, hence the structure formation changes accordingly compared to the region without overdensity. In this talk\, I will introduce the \"separate universe mapping\"\, and present how the power spectrum and halo mass function change in different density environments\, which are equivalent to the squeezed bispectrum and the halo bias\, respectively. I will then discuss the extension of this approach to inclusion of additional fluids such as massive neutrinos. This allows us to probe the novel scale dependence of halo bias and squeezed bispectrum caused by massive neutrinos. Finally\, I will present a recent confirmation of the neutrino effect on halo bias by a different simulation technique\, and discuss the impact on constraining the cosmological parameters.\n

On April 22 only\, hackers will meet at 2 pm. \n\nDr. Shiraito is available to assist with a variety of topics that include Bayesian statistics\, parallel computing in R\, OpenMP and Rcpp\, web scraping using Python\, working with high performance computing clusters (Flux\, Beta\, Hadoop\, Cavium)\, and other computational methods. He hopes that participants will actively help each other where able. His goal is to create a productive and inclusive community for hackers to share expertise\, assist each other in data-intensive projects\, and enjoy peer-programming opportunities. Dr. Shiraito looks forward to hacking with you.\n\nThe goal is to foster a diverse and inclusive hacking environment in which attendees can benefit from each other’s expertise. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:STS Speaker. Back to the Future: An STS Approach to Markets
DESCRIPTION:As the late Leigh Star noted\, infrastructure is that often invisible stuff all around us that is both relational and ecological. I employ the tools of STS in an attempt to unpack infrastructure with respect to markets. Markets may be examined as (1) institutions\, (2) the sum of particular sorts of economic transactions and (3) places where politics is enacted. Contemporary economists have focused on the sum of transactions\, largely ignoring institutions and politics. However\, given the performative character of economics\, I need also to examine how economics\, in its theoretical treatment of markets\, has influenced the development of actual markets. Finally\, any ecological study must also include standards\, a relatively new form of infrastructure taken for granted by most economists. Based on preliminary investigations\, I propose three hypotheses: First\, actual markets (must) fail to deliver distributive justice. Second\, economics as a discipline lags behind the actual changes in the nature of markets. Third\, standards have taken on an increasingly important position as infrastructural devices that shape markets\, first supporting and then undermining neoclassical approaches.  Institutional economists of a century ago understood that a pragmatic approach\, emphasizing the evolutionary character of markets\, allowed construction of perspectives that change with the times. A re-reading of their work opens new vistas for STS approaches to markets.\n\nBiosketch: Larry Busch is University Distinguished Professor Emeritus in the Department of Sociology at MSU. Dr. Busch's current interests include the use of standards in public and private policy making\, biotechnology and nanotechnology policy\, agricultural science and technology policy\, higher education in agriculture\, and public participation in the policy process and the consequences of neoliberal policies for democratic governance. His most recent book is Knowledge for Sale: The Neoliberal Takeover of Higher Education. MIT Press\, 2017.

DESCRIPTION:Courtney Snyder\, conductor\nChristine Lundahl\, graduate conductor\nChad Burrow\, guest soloist\n\nThe Concert Band performs pieces that express the range of human emotions from grief over losing a loved one to the joy of a wedding celebration. The concert opens with a festive Peruvian fanfare followed by two pieces performed in memory of the late composer Steven Stucky. Wilson’s Footsteps comprises a modern-day Bolero structure representing the meandering in life from gently walking to mysterious uncertainty to massive marching. DESCRIPTION:“100 Years of Polish Independence: Zakopane 1918” is an exhibition of photographs from the archives of the Tatra Museum in Zakopane\, Poland. It tells the unique story of the short-lived Republic of Zakopane\, which was established in the concluding weeks of the First World War. The Copernicus Program in Polish Studies has curated the exhibit and organized public lectures in collaboration with the Tatra Museum\, the Adam Mickiewicz Institute in Warsaw\, and Culture.pl as part of POLSKA 100\, an international cultural program commemorating the centenary of Poland regaining Independence. It is financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage of the Republic of Poland as part of the multi-year program NIEPODLEGŁA 2017-22.

DESCRIPTION:Dennis Nahabetian’s metal sculptures captivate the viewer with their exquisite detail and refined beauty. Combining a masterful use of metal and textile techniques\, Nahabetian carefully constructs objects that simultaneously harness light while projecting complex linear shadows. A native of Michigan\, Nahabetian received his BFA from Eastern Michigan University and MFA form Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. He currently lives and has his studio in Orchard Park\, New York\, near Buffalo. Nahabetian has work in many public and private collections and has exhibited at a variety of venues for over 25 years.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Image Vessels: Blown Glass
DESCRIPTION:Sculptor Herb Babcock creates both monumental and human-scale work using metal\, glass and stone. In the early years of the American Studio Glass Movement (1974-1984) Babcock’s sculptural and painterly expression utilized the vessel format. By layering color — both mass and line — between gathers of clear\, molten glass\, the full compositions are viewed through the vessel as three-dimensional. Babcock is Professor Emeritus\, College for Creative Studies. He was Section Chair of the Glass Department where he taught for 40 years. He lives in Ann Arbor and built a new studio near U-M north campus in 2016.

DESCRIPTION:Sharon Will’s commitment to painting is to capture the simple\, everyday beauty around her in her native Michigan and beyond. She is passionate about painting plein air (outdoors) whenever possible\, as she feels the direct observation from life is the best teacher to truly see the subtleties of light and color in nature. Working on sanded paper\, her process begins with a pastel and alcohol/mineral spirits under-painting wash to establish value and color. Soft pastel is applied in layers\, often in contrasting color and temperatures for vibrancy. Over her 35-year career in painting\, Will has won numerous national awards. She also operates a custom framing business from her home/studio in Washington Township and teaches occasional workshops.

DESCRIPTION:Most members of Paradigm art quilt group are professional artists based in southeast Michigan who create work\, teach and lecture. Although most of their artwork is textile based\, members use many different techniques. The theme of this exhibit is Inspired\, and the art quilts on display incorporate elements of assemblage\, collage and painting. The exhibit showcases the round robin approach that guided the creation of the work: the first artist made something which inspired the work of the second artist\, which inspired the work of the third artist\, and so on. A brief statement about the inspiration is included with each piece.

DESCRIPTION:Gregg Chadwick grew up with the rails of America in his blood. His grandfather Arthur Desch stoked coal in steam engines before becoming a train engineer on the Jersey Central Line. At family gatherings in Chadwick’s grandparent’s home\, his aunts and cousins played music to the rhythms of the trains outside. From Junior Parker\, Elvis Presley\, Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash\, to arts writers and directors Greil Marcus and Jim Jarmusch\, the enduring mythos of America and its legacy has been wrapped up in the blues notes of the song “Mystery Train”. Chadwick’s current series of paintings\, Mystery Train\, is steeped in the powerful echoes of those machine days.

DESCRIPTION:This exhibition features a selection of Elena Weissman’s hand-built ceramic teapots created over the last two decades. The teapots are playful interpretations of many everyday objects. In addition to ceramics and photography\, Weismann works in paper arts\, book making\, fused glass\, beads\, mosaics\, metalwork and painting. Her photography can be seen in several professional buildings in the Detroit metropolitan area\, as well as in many personal collections. DESCRIPTION:Ruth Crowe graduated from Texas Woman’s University in Denton\, Texas with a degree in Art Education. She served in the US Army and was a Los Angeles Police Dept. officer and collegiate softball coach. In 2014\, in her Ann Arbor backyard studio\, Crowe began her current work with encaustics and image transfer processes. She creates her multi-media works by combining personal and vintage photography with wax on wood. In addition to exhibiting her work in Ann Arbor and Toledo\, Ohio\, Crowe also shows at the Water Street Gallery in Douglas\, Michigan. In 2018\, Crowe presented her work at the Ann Arbor Art Fair\, the Original.

DESCRIPTION:The Yankee Air Museum dedicates itself to educating individuals about the history of US military aviation. Located at the historic Willow Run Airport\, just east of Ann Arbor\, where over 8\,600 B-24 Liberator Bomber aircraft were produced during World War II\, the Yankee Air Museum seeks to keep the history of the ‘Arsenal of Democracy’ alive. The Willow Run Bomber Plant is home to ‘Rosie the Riveter\,’ the iconic symbol of the thousands of women who poured into industrial factories to help the war effort during WWII. This exhibition features unique artifacts from the US home-front\, the Willow Run Bomber Plant\, and local WWII aviators from Ann Arbor.

DESCRIPTION:The mobility and displacement of the Black body\, from port to holding cell\, to ward and out\, is a history that is embedded in our communities socially\, culturally and geographically. Alluding to feelings of pain\, otherness\, power and triumph\, \"she was here\, once\" features work that illustrates a moment of remembrance and reflection on the women who have roamed these spaces before us.\n\nIn summer 2018\, artist Nastassja Swift organized a collaborative workshop and public performance in her home city of Richmond\, Virginia. Using a range of choreographed movement\, sound\, and solidarity\, eight Black women and girls\, wearing large needle felted wool masks\, traced the ancestral footprints of the arrival of the Black body in Richmond. The 3.5 mile walk began in Shockoe Bottom (the site of the importation of slaves into Richmond\, and one of the largest sources of slave trade in America) and concluded in the Jackson Ward neighborhood (one of the largest Black communities in Richmond).\n\nThe multi-layered piece has produced a short film\, mini documentary\, photography\, and performance masks\, on display in her solo exhibition\, \"she was here\, once\" in Lane Hall.\n\nLane Hall Gallery is open to the public weekdays from 8am - 4pm. Class visits are encouraged.\n\nAccessibility: Ramp and elevator access at the E. Washington Street entrance (by the loading dock). There are accessible restrooms on the south end of Lane Hall\, on each floor of the building. DESCRIPTION:This exhibit provides a platform to begin understanding the effects of rising sea levels along the coasts of Indonesia\, Bangladesh\, The Netherlands\, Italy and the United States.\n\nBy the end of the century oceans are predicted to rise between .3 and 2.5 meters\, which will result in major flooding in coastal cities around the world. DESCRIPTION:The dry climate of the Egyptian desert offers an ideal environment for the preservation of ancient artifacts. As the sands of Egypt has preserved also numerous Coptic manuscripts\, the transmission of the literary heritage of Egyptian Christians can be documented quite well from its beginnings in the 4th century CE until its decline in the 12th-13th centuries CE\, when it was completely superseded by Arabic. This exhibit aims to show some of the hallmarks of Coptic literature using manuscripts kept in the Special Collections Research Center of the University of Michigan Library. Topics explored include the main Coptic dialects\; bilingualism in Egypt\; books read by the Egyptian monks\; and the works of Shenoute the Great\, the most important author of Coptic literature.\n\nThis exhibit is curated by Dr. Frank Feder and Dr. Alin Suciu from the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities. The exhibit and related programming are offered with support from the Department of Middle East Studies and the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology.\n\nJoin us for an opening lecture and reception at 4:30 p.m. on November 12 in the Hatcher Library Gallery.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Paved with Good Intentions
DESCRIPTION:In keeping with artist David Opdyke’s previous work\, this site-specific installation serves as a critique of U.S. culture and politics. In an era of fake news and daily hyperbole\, Opdyke literally changes the picture by hand painting on 528 vintage postcards of well-known American landmarks and destinations. The postcards are assembled into a large mural--a vast gridded landscape beset by environmental chaos. Each card is placed to fit into the overall image\, and carefully modified with the gouache to show a realistically rendered piece of the overall turmoil.\n\nThe installation also features animated shorts and script-driven video\, which take place within the visual confines of one or more postcards. The animation is inspired\, in part\, by Terry Gilliam’s animation work on Monty Python’s \"Flying Circus\" and by the classical music sound effects in the Road Runner cartoons.\n\nAbout David Opdyke:\nDavid Opdyke is a draughtsman\, sculptor\, and animator known for his trenchant political send-ups of American culture. Born in Schenectady\, NY in 1969\, he graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a degree in painting and sculpture. His work is informed by the massive industrial and corporate restructuring he witnessed growing up\, namely the abandonment of the city center by manufacturing giants General Electric and ALCO. As GE shifted resources to neighboring Niskayuna\, the disparities became hard for Opdyke to ignore. Massive\, decaying factories\, an empty interstate loop\, and unemployment were downtown\; new streets\, expensive homes\, sushi and shopping malls were in the suburbs.\n\nFor 20 years Opdyke worked as a scenic painter and architectural model-maker. Ranging from intricate miniature constructions to room-sized installations\, his artwork explores globalization\, consumerism\, and civilization’s abusive relationship with the environment.\n\nThis project is supported by a grant from the Efroymson Family Fund.

DESCRIPTION:Elizabeth Youngblood is a Detroit-based artist trained and working in a variety of media disciplines including fiber and clay. Recent work is based on drawing/mark making\, with a developing body of photographic work. Both consider themes relating to the passage of time\, but in ways particular the each medium.\n\nYoungblood earned a BFA in ceramics is from The University of Michigan\, School of Art (now The Stamps School of Art & Design) and an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art working with Katherine McCoy.\n\nSince returning to Detroit after living and working in New York City\, Philadelphia\, and other cities in Pennsylvania and New Jersey\, and teaching at a range of colleges and universities\, Youngblood now maintains a full-time studio practice. Her art is exhibited locally and nationally\, and is represented in both private and public collections.\n\nThe Opening Reception for the Artist will take place on Wednesday\, January 16 from 4-6pm. Refreshments will be served\, and Elizabeth will give a Q&A at approx. 4:30pm.

DESCRIPTION:The Special Collections Research Center is excited to display a variety of nineteenth and twentieth century children's books made of cloth and related materials.\n\nThe market for children’s books expanded over the course of the nineteenth century\, as childhood mortality rates dropped and literacy rates rose. British and American publishers sought to create “indestructible” books that would appeal to the parents and teachers of very young children. Linen and muslin proved to be practical and appealing materials for such books\, which were usually printed with bright colors and comparatively little text.\n\nCloth books remained popular for almost a century before the cloth rationing of World War II shifted production towards heavy-duty paper substitutes\, such as “linenette.”

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Fariss is excited to host a weekly Tuesday morning hackerspace from February 12 until April 23. Dr. Fariss uses computational methods and the statistical program R to study why governments around the world torture\, maim\, and kill individuals within their jurisdiction\, and the processes monitors use to observe and document these abuses. Other research projects cover a broad array of themes but share a focus on computationally intensive methods\, research design\, and the analysis of data at a massive scale. \n\nThis weekly meeting with Dr. Fariss is for those with an interest in the R statistical programming language. Both beginners and experienced users are invited to attend. Dr. Fariss plans to introduce mostly introductory material during these sessions but will also cover Bayesian modeling in R and STAN.\n\nThe goal is to foster a diverse and inclusive hacking environment in which attendees can benefit from each other’s expertise. To participate\, hackers need to bring their own laptops and\, ideally\, have a chunk of code they are planning to work on unless they plan to assist and join others in their coding endeavors.

DESCRIPTION:Can abstract art be about politics? In the early 1970s\, that question was hotly debated as artists\, critics\, and the public grappled with the relationship between art\, politics\, race\, and feminism. Many of those debates centered on bringing to light the roles that gender and race played in how “great modern art” was defined and assessed\, and on employing art to advance civil rights. Within this discourse\, abstraction had an especially fraught role. To many\, the decision by women artists and artists of color  to make abstract art seemed to represent a retreat from politics and protest: an abnegation of a commitment to civil rights and feminism. \"Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s\" presents large-scale work by four leading American artists—Helen Frankenthaler\, Sam Gilliam\, Al Loving\, and Louise Nevelson—who chose abstraction as a means of expression within the intense political climate of the early 1970s.\n\nLead support for \"Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s\" is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund\, the Herbert W. and Susan L. DESCRIPTION:Marisa Morán Jahn: The Mighty and the Mythic\nJanuary 24\, 2019 – March 2\, 2019\n\nStamps Gallery is proud to present The Mighty and the Mythic\, a solo exhibition of work by renowned social practice artist Marisa Morán Jahn. For the first time\, The Mighty and the Mythic brings together three key projects — CareForce (2012– ongoing)\, Bibliobandido (2010–ongoing)\, and MIRROR | MASK (2017–ongoing) — that highlight her deep and meaningful collaborations with low-wage immigrants\, caregivers\, and youth. Jahn describes her use of play and humor as essential tools that enable her and her collaborators to portray their lives with dignity\, critique power\, and build momentum within their community. Jahn’s practice is deeply informed by her own experiences growing up as a second-generation immigrant of Chinese and Ecuadorian heritage. For Jahn home was not a fixed place but an adaptation itself. Her varied vocational past as a schoolteacher\, caretaker\, woodshop cleaner-upper\, lumber hauler\, community organizer\, and now university professor and mother informs the urgency in her work to find common ground between (her-)self and (an-)other\, through the concepts of care and empathy. Each of the works in this exhibition highlights her deep engagement with the stories of everyday people\, mundane routines\, and a desire to build an inclusive society. DESCRIPTION:There is increased interest among health care institutions to transitioning to become learning health systems.  In this process\, however\, there are increased practical and moral challenges from using the traditional definitions of “research” vs “practice” to determine which activities within such systems require IRB review and other ethics oversight\, and which do not.  As health systems more deliberately integrate care delivery with ongoing data collection\, a set of ethics commitments for this integrated approach must be articulated.  This presentation will provide an example of an ethics framework for learning health care and underscore how also being guided by commitments to transparency\, engagement\, and accountability around the ongoing learning are also essential\, ethically.\n\nThe LHS Collaboratory is co-sponsored by the Department of Learning Health Sciences\, the Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation and the Office of Research at the University of Michigan.

DESCRIPTION:Marta Hanson is an Associate Professor of the history of East Asian medicine in the Department of the History of Medicine\, Johns Hopkins University (2004-present). Her book is titled \"Speaking of Epidemics in Chinese Medicine: Disease and the Geographic Imagination in Late Imperial China\" (Routledge\, 2011). She is currently writing a book titled: “‘Heaven and Earth are Within One’s Grasp’ (Qian Kun zaiwo 乾坤在握): The Healer’s Body-as-Technology in Classical Chinese Medicine.” This book uses evidence from the seventh to seventeenth century to illustrate how Chinese healers instrumentalized their bodies as mnemonic aids\, time-keeping devices\, calculating devices\, and medical instruments before instruments became considered to be external to physicians’ bodies\, calculators substituted for our brains\, and computers became surrogates for our memory in the modern period. \n    \nShe was senior co-editor of the journal \"Asian Medicine: Tradition and Modernity\" for five years (2011-16). She currently is President of the International Society for the History of East Asian Science\, Technology\, and Medicine (ISHEASTM\, 2015-2019)\, is on the Advisory Board of the Käte Hamburger Kolleg\, Internationales Kolleg für Geisteswissenschaftliche Forschung IKGF (International Consortium for Research in the Humanities)\, project on “Fate\, Freedom\, and Prognostication\,” at Friedrich-Alexander-University (FAU) Erlangen-Nürnberg (2016-20)\, and on the Council Member of the American Association of the History of Medicine (AAHM\, 2017-19). DESCRIPTION:Associate Professor of Anthropology and 2018-19 Institute for the Humanities Richard and Lillian Ives Faculty Fellow Michael Lempert will give a 30 minute talk followed by Q & A.\n\n\"Small Talk: Talk Therapy and the Microscopic Science of Face-to-Face Interaction\"\n\nWhen the sciences of face-to-face interaction became a boom industry in postwar and early Cold War America\, many grew convinced that interaction was small: a micro-sociological world knowable through mechanical recording\, painstaking transcription\, and fine-grained analysis. The most feverishly microscopic researchers tried to catch the subtlest verbal and nonverbal signs that people gave off\, as if straining to touch the nerve of interpersonal life.  This microscopy arose from an intimate dialogue between psychiatry and communication science that began in the 1930s with the study of psychoanalysis using dictation machines.  Recording-based talk therapy research left the sciences of conversation with a microscopic sensibility and a conviction about the scale of their object of knowledge.

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:The Kerner Report: A 50th Anniversary Symposium
DESCRIPTION:The event will include some footage from the 12th & Clairmount documentary about the 1967 Detroit rebellion\; comments by Earl Lewis\, director of the Center for Social Solutions\, and Alan Curtis\, president of the Eisenhower Foundation\; and a panel discussion of experts to include discussion of the Detroit context and the update of the Kerner Report published in 2018.\n\nThe 1967-1968 urban uprisings and rebellions in several American cities shone a bright light on the complex social\, economic\, and racial problems of the 1950s and 1960s. In response to those uprisings\, President Lyndon Johnson convened the National Advisory Commission on Civil Disorders in 1968. The symposium will convene a group of scholars\, policy analysts\, and political thinkers\, and community participants to discuss the progress made since the Kerner Report was released and to think through what work remains to move the nation\, its citizens\, and our society toward its aspirational goals of equity\, inclusion\, and justice. The participants and panelists will be charged with placing their focus on identifying those political strategies and public policies that have been effective toward those goals. Moreover\, they will also be charged with helping symposium participants and interested constituencies to begin think through feasible ways to move public and political discourse away from outmoded\, polarizing\, and ineffective ideas and policies. While much social and civic good has been achieved since 1968\, this symposium will take a hard and sober look at the emergent trends toward political polarization\, social and economic disparities\, and potential threats to ethical and democratic norms. We anticipate raising many questions\, but we also intend to leave with proposals for moving our nation forward.

DESCRIPTION:Scholars generally associate the nineteenth-century rise of liberal imperialism with the European “civilizing mission” in Africa and Asia. They tend not to link its rise with U.S. intervention in Latin America. This talk considers Latin America’s role in the spread of liberal imperialism by exploring how U.S. settler colonists sought to forge an “empire of liberty” in Central America during the 1850s. While this imperial endeavor was fiercely contested by many Central Americans\, it enjoyed strong support among some Central American liberals. Such support raises new questions about both liberal imperialism and Latin America’s transition from colonies to nation-states.\n\nMichel Gobat is an associate professor of history at the University of Pittsburgh. His research interests focus on modern Central America\, U.S.-Latin American relations\, and international history. His latest book is Empire by Invitation: William Walker and Manifest Destiny in Central America (Harvard\, 2018)\, which traces Central America’s encounter with U.S. settler colonialism during the mid- nineteenth-century era of global imperial expansion. His other publications include Confronting the American Dream: Nicaragua under U.S. Imperial Rule (Duke\, 2005)\, which explores how Nicaragua was transformed by the U.S. occupation of 1912-1933\; and “The Invention of Latin America: A Transnational History of Anti-Imperialism\, Democracy\, and Race\,” American Historical Review (2013).

DESCRIPTION:How innovative business models can make a positive social impact by improving access to quality medicines for women regardless of where they live\, their insurance status\, or whether they can pay will be the topic for the Feb. 12 WDI Global Impact Speaker Series. Sally Stephens\, chief business officer of Medicines 360\, will discuss the organization's global focus and how it is driven to meet an unmet need for women around the world\, including in the U.S. That is\, affordable\, long-acting contraceptives. Medicines360 has the only nonprofit pharmaceutical company with a marketed product in the U.S. Its first product is a hormonal intrauterine device\, or IUD\, which had been out of reach for many women because of the high cost of the sole brand on the market. Medicines360 offers its FDA-approved Liletta at a discounted price to public sector clinics across the U.S. to increase access to this important family-planning product. Additionally\, Medicines360 has been working with international health organizations to offer the product\, branded as Avibela in low- and middle-income countries\, to also increase access to these markets. Avibela was launched in Madagascar in 2018. Sales of Liletta in the U.S. help fund research and development efforts by the company to bring contraceptives to countries such as Madagascar. Stephens will discuss the history of Medicines360\, its successes and its plans to expand access to its affordable medicines and products for women.

DESCRIPTION:Mariko Anno is associate professor at Tokyo Institute of Technology and Toyota Visiting Professor at the University of Michigan\, Center for Japanese Studies (2018–19). Anno holds a PhD in Ethnomusicology from Tokyo University of the Arts and a DMA in flute performance and literature from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She is a specialist in the nohkan (Noh flute) and is well versed in all aspects of Noh having trained with professional Noh masters in Japan. Her research examines the traditional form of Japanese Noh drama in a contemporary transnational context through the emerging form\, English-language Noh\, which she performs with the English-language Noh troupe\, Theatre Nohgaku. She has won the Emerging Scholar Award from the Association for Asian Performance and is a certified Alexander Technique teacher.\n\nThe 2018-19 Virginia Martin Howard Lecture Series\, sponsored by the Stearns Collection of Music Instruments\, features presentations by distinguished international scholars and performers focus work in the areas of ethnomusicology\, historical musicology\, and organology. Lecture topics range from instrument restoration and conservation to African one-string fiddles to vintage music synthesizers.

The Copernicus Program in Polish Studies has curated the exhibit and organized public lectures in collaboration with the Tatra Museum\, the Adam Mickiewicz Institute in Warsaw\, and Culture.pl as part of POLSKA 100\, an international cultural program commemorating the centenary of Poland regaining Independence. It is financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage of the Republic of Poland as part of the multi-year program NIEPODLEGŁA 2017-22.

A native of Michigan\, Nahabetian received his BFA from Eastern Michigan University and MFA form Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. He currently lives and has his studio in Orchard Park\, New York\, near Buffalo. Nahabetian has work in many public and private collections and has exhibited at a variety of venues for over 25 years.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Image Vessels: Blown Glass
DESCRIPTION:Sculptor Herb Babcock creates both monumental and human-scale work using metal\, glass and stone. In the early years of the American Studio Glass Movement (1974-1984) Babcock’s sculptural and painterly expression utilized the vessel format. By layering color — both mass and line — between gathers of clear\, molten glass\, the full compositions are viewed through the vessel as three-dimensional. Babcock is Professor Emeritus\, College for Creative Studies. He was Section Chair of the Glass Department where he taught for 40 years. He lives in Ann Arbor and built a new studio near U-M north campus in 2016.

DESCRIPTION:Sharon Will’s commitment to painting is to capture the simple\, everyday beauty around her in her native Michigan and beyond. She is passionate about painting plein air (outdoors) whenever possible\, as she feels the direct observation from life is the best teacher to truly see the subtleties of light and color in nature. Working on sanded paper\, her process begins with a pastel and alcohol/mineral spirits under-painting wash to establish value and color. Soft pastel is applied in layers\, often in contrasting color and temperatures for vibrancy. Over her 35-year career in painting\, Will has won numerous national awards. She also operates a custom framing business from her home/studio in Washington Township and teaches occasional workshops.

DESCRIPTION:Most members of Paradigm art quilt group are professional artists based in southeast Michigan who create work\, teach and lecture. Although most of their artwork is textile based\, members use many different techniques. The theme of this exhibit is Inspired\, and the art quilts on display incorporate elements of assemblage\, collage and painting. The exhibit showcases the round robin approach that guided the creation of the work: the first artist made something which inspired the work of the second artist\, which inspired the work of the third artist\, and so on. DESCRIPTION:Gregg Chadwick grew up with the rails of America in his blood. His grandfather Arthur Desch stoked coal in steam engines before becoming a train engineer on the Jersey Central Line. At family gatherings in Chadwick’s grandparent’s home\, his aunts and cousins played music to the rhythms of the trains outside. From Junior Parker\, Elvis Presley\, Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash\, to arts writers and directors Greil Marcus and Jim Jarmusch\, the enduring mythos of America and its legacy has been wrapped up in the blues notes of the song “Mystery Train”. Chadwick’s current series of paintings\, Mystery Train\, is steeped in the powerful echoes of those machine days.

DESCRIPTION:This exhibition features a selection of Elena Weissman’s hand-built ceramic teapots created over the last two decades. The teapots are playful interpretations of many everyday objects. In addition to ceramics and photography\, Weismann works in paper arts\, book making\, fused glass\, beads\, mosaics\, metalwork and painting. Her photography can be seen in several professional buildings in the Detroit metropolitan area\, as well as in many personal collections. DESCRIPTION:Ruth Crowe graduated from Texas Woman’s University in Denton\, Texas with a degree in Art Education. She served in the US Army and was a Los Angeles Police Dept. officer and collegiate softball coach. In 2014\, in her Ann Arbor backyard studio\, Crowe began her current work with encaustics and image transfer processes. She creates her multi-media works by combining personal and vintage photography with wax on wood. In addition to exhibiting her work in Ann Arbor and Toledo\, Ohio\, Crowe also shows at the Water Street Gallery in Douglas\, Michigan. In 2018\, Crowe presented her work at the Ann Arbor Art Fair\, the Original.

DESCRIPTION:The Yankee Air Museum dedicates itself to educating individuals about the history of US military aviation. Located at the historic Willow Run Airport\, just east of Ann Arbor\, where over 8\,600 B-24 Liberator Bomber aircraft were produced during World War II\, the Yankee Air Museum seeks to keep the history of the ‘Arsenal of Democracy’ alive. The Willow Run Bomber Plant is home to ‘Rosie the Riveter\,’ the iconic symbol of the thousands of women who poured into industrial factories to help the war effort during WWII. This exhibition features unique artifacts from the US home-front\, the Willow Run Bomber Plant\, and local WWII aviators from Ann Arbor.

DESCRIPTION:The mobility and displacement of the Black body\, from port to holding cell\, to ward and out\, is a history that is embedded in our communities socially\, culturally and geographically. Alluding to feelings of pain\, otherness\, power and triumph\, \"she was here\, once\" features work that illustrates a moment of remembrance and reflection on the women who have roamed these spaces before us.\n\nIn summer 2018\, artist Nastassja Swift organized a collaborative workshop and public performance in her home city of Richmond\, Virginia. Using a range of choreographed movement\, sound\, and solidarity\, eight Black women and girls\, wearing large needle felted wool masks\, traced the ancestral footprints of the arrival of the Black body in Richmond. The 3.5 mile walk began in Shockoe Bottom (the site of the importation of slaves into Richmond\, and one of the largest sources of slave trade in America) and concluded in the Jackson Ward neighborhood (one of the largest Black communities in Richmond).\n\nThe multi-layered piece has produced a short film\, mini documentary\, photography\, and performance masks\, on display in her solo exhibition\, \"she was here\, once\" in Lane Hall.\n\nLane Hall Gallery is open to the public weekdays from 8am - 4pm. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Written Culture of Christian Egypt: Coptic Manuscripts from the University of Michigan Collection
DESCRIPTION:The dry climate of the Egyptian desert offers an ideal environment for the preservation of ancient artifacts. As the sands of Egypt has preserved also numerous Coptic manuscripts\, the transmission of the literary heritage of Egyptian Christians can be documented quite well from its beginnings in the 4th century CE until its decline in the 12th-13th centuries CE\, when it was completely superseded by Arabic. This exhibit aims to show some of the hallmarks of Coptic literature using manuscripts kept in the Special Collections Research Center of the University of Michigan Library. Topics explored include the main Coptic dialects\; bilingualism in Egypt\; books read by the Egyptian monks\; and the works of Shenoute the Great\, the most important author of Coptic literature.\n\nThis exhibit is curated by Dr. Frank Feder and Dr. Alin Suciu from the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities. The exhibit and related programming are offered with support from the Department of Middle East Studies and the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology.\n\nJoin us for an opening lecture and reception at 4:30 p.m. on November 12 in the Hatcher Library Gallery.

This exhibition examines colors in the ancient Roman world\, how these colors were produced\, where they were found\, what the Romans thought about them\, and how we study them today. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Paved with Good Intentions
DESCRIPTION:In keeping with artist David Opdyke’s previous work\, this site-specific installation serves as a critique of U.S. culture and politics. In an era of fake news and daily hyperbole\, Opdyke literally changes the picture by hand painting on 528 vintage postcards of well-known American landmarks and destinations. The postcards are assembled into a large mural--a vast gridded landscape beset by environmental chaos. Each card is placed to fit into the overall image\, and carefully modified with the gouache to show a realistically rendered piece of the overall turmoil.\n\nThe installation also features animated shorts and script-driven video\, which take place within the visual confines of one or more postcards. The animation is inspired\, in part\, by Terry Gilliam’s animation work on Monty Python’s \"Flying Circus\" and by the classical music sound effects in the Road Runner cartoons.\n\nAbout David Opdyke:\nDavid Opdyke is a draughtsman\, sculptor\, and animator known for his trenchant political send-ups of American culture. Born in Schenectady\, NY in 1969\, he graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a degree in painting and sculpture. His work is informed by the massive industrial and corporate restructuring he witnessed growing up\, namely the abandonment of the city center by manufacturing giants General Electric and ALCO. As GE shifted resources to neighboring Niskayuna\, the disparities became hard for Opdyke to ignore. Massive\, decaying factories\, an empty interstate loop\, and unemployment were downtown\; new streets\, expensive homes\, sushi and shopping malls were in the suburbs.\n\nFor 20 years Opdyke worked as a scenic painter and architectural model-maker. Ranging from intricate miniature constructions to room-sized installations\, his artwork explores globalization\, consumerism\, and civilization’s abusive relationship with the environment.\n\nThis project is supported by a grant from the Efroymson Family Fund.

Victor Frankl said\, “The events of our lives are not as important as the meaning we give them.” Did you know about the serious science demonstrating the benefits of positive feelings for your well-being\, your health\, and even your longevity?  Positivity is not a “feel good” or smiley-face subject.  Forget everything you know\, and embrace the tremendous power of positivity - cultivated ways of expressing things like love and gratitude that are proven to broaden us and build us up. Cameron Powell said\, “It’s the secret knowledge you keep buying books to discover.” \n\nWe’ll discuss several books and articles that give us insight into the science of positivity. Our main text will be Positivity by Barbara Fredrickson\, Kenan Distinguished Professor of Psychology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill\, a leading scholar within social psychology\, affective science\, and positive psychology. \n\nInstructor Mike Murray is a clinical psychologist and has taught many OLLI classes.  These sessions for those 50 and above will meet on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. from February 13 through March 20.

DESCRIPTION:Elizabeth Youngblood is a Detroit-based artist trained and working in a variety of media disciplines including fiber and clay. Recent work is based on drawing/mark making\, with a developing body of photographic work. Both consider themes relating to the passage of time\, but in ways particular the each medium.\n\nYoungblood earned a BFA in ceramics is from The University of Michigan\, School of Art (now The Stamps School of Art & Design) and an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art working with Katherine McCoy.\n\nSince returning to Detroit after living and working in New York City\, Philadelphia\, and other cities in Pennsylvania and New Jersey\, and teaching at a range of colleges and universities\, Youngblood now maintains a full-time studio practice. Her art is exhibited locally and nationally\, and is represented in both private and public collections.\n\nThe Opening Reception for the Artist will take place on Wednesday\, January 16 from 4-6pm. Refreshments will be served\, and Elizabeth will give a Q&A at approx. 4:30pm.

DESCRIPTION:The Special Collections Research Center is excited to display a variety of nineteenth and twentieth century children's books made of cloth and related materials.\n\nThe market for children’s books expanded over the course of the nineteenth century\, as childhood mortality rates dropped and literacy rates rose. British and American publishers sought to create “indestructible” books that would appeal to the parents and teachers of very young children. Linen and muslin proved to be practical and appealing materials for such books\, which were usually printed with bright colors and comparatively little text.\n\nCloth books remained popular for almost a century before the cloth rationing of World War II shifted production towards heavy-duty paper substitutes\, such as “linenette.”

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Ware is a self-taught HPC user and excited to host a weekly hackerspace from February 13 to April 3\, 2019. Her training has been in genetic epidemiology\, public health\, and statistics using SAS (local)\, R (server)\, Linux (on FLUX\, MBNI\, and other personal servers)\, batch scripting (SGE\, PBS\, Slurm). Dr. Ware has taught SAS (data management and statistical modeling) and introductory statistics using R. She is experienced in teaching high performance computing to individuals with limited programming background. \n\nIn this hackerspace\, Dr. Ware is particularly interested in addressing issues of data manipulation in Linux\, efficient documentation and file naming structures\, data management (SAS/R)\, setting up an HPC connection\, WinSCP\, getting around a server using basic Linux\, genomic analysis\, and high-dimensional data analysis. Dr. Ware would like to learn about SFTP using Globus\, Python\, and more advanced batch scripting in Slurm. Dr. Ware hopes you will join her hackerspace this term.\n\nThe goal is to foster a diverse and inclusive hacking environment in which attendees can benefit from each other’s expertise. To participate\, hackers need to bring their own laptops and\, ideally\, have a chunk of code they are planning to work on unless they plan to assist and join others in their coding endeavors.

DESCRIPTION:Can abstract art be about politics? In the early 1970s\, that question was hotly debated as artists\, critics\, and the public grappled with the relationship between art\, politics\, race\, and feminism. Many of those debates centered on bringing to light the roles that gender and race played in how “great modern art” was defined and assessed\, and on employing art to advance civil rights. Within this discourse\, abstraction had an especially fraught role. To many\, the decision by women artists and artists of color  to make abstract art seemed to represent a retreat from politics and protest: an abnegation of a commitment to civil rights and feminism. \"Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s\" presents large-scale work by four leading American artists—Helen Frankenthaler\, Sam Gilliam\, Al Loving\, and Louise Nevelson—who chose abstraction as a means of expression within the intense political climate of the early 1970s.\n\nLead support for \"Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s\" is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund\, the Herbert W. and Susan L. DESCRIPTION:Marisa Morán Jahn: The Mighty and the Mythic\nJanuary 24\, 2019 – March 2\, 2019\n\nStamps Gallery is proud to present The Mighty and the Mythic\, a solo exhibition of work by renowned social practice artist Marisa Morán Jahn. For the first time\, The Mighty and the Mythic brings together three key projects — CareForce (2012– ongoing)\, Bibliobandido (2010–ongoing)\, and MIRROR | MASK (2017–ongoing) — that highlight her deep and meaningful collaborations with low-wage immigrants\, caregivers\, and youth. Jahn describes her use of play and humor as essential tools that enable her and her collaborators to portray their lives with dignity\, critique power\, and build momentum within their community. Jahn’s practice is deeply informed by her own experiences growing up as a second-generation immigrant of Chinese and Ecuadorian heritage. For Jahn home was not a fixed place but an adaptation itself. Her varied vocational past as a schoolteacher\, caretaker\, woodshop cleaner-upper\, lumber hauler\, community organizer\, and now university professor and mother informs the urgency in her work to find common ground between (her-)self and (an-)other\, through the concepts of care and empathy. Each of the works in this exhibition highlights her deep engagement with the stories of everyday people\, mundane routines\, and a desire to build an inclusive society. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Paved with Good Intentions
DESCRIPTION:In keeping with artist David Opdyke’s previous work\, this site-specific installation serves as a critique of U.S. culture and politics. In an era of fake news and daily hyperbole\, Opdyke literally changes the picture by hand painting on 528 vintage postcards of well-known American landmarks and destinations. The postcards are assembled into a large mural--a vast gridded landscape beset by environmental chaos. Each card is placed to fit into the overall image\, and carefully modified with the gouache to show a realistically rendered piece of the overall turmoil.\n\nThe installation also features animated shorts and script-driven video\, which take place within the visual confines of one or more postcards. The animation is inspired\, in part\, by Terry Gilliam’s animation work on Monty Python’s \"Flying Circus\" and by the classical music sound effects in the Road Runner cartoons.\n\nAbout David Opdyke:\nDavid Opdyke is a draughtsman\, sculptor\, and animator known for his trenchant political send-ups of American culture. Born in Schenectady\, NY in 1969\, he graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a degree in painting and sculpture. His work is informed by the massive industrial and corporate restructuring he witnessed growing up\, namely the abandonment of the city center by manufacturing giants General Electric and ALCO. As GE shifted resources to neighboring Niskayuna\, the disparities became hard for Opdyke to ignore. Massive\, decaying factories\, an empty interstate loop\, and unemployment were downtown\; new streets\, expensive homes\, sushi and shopping malls were in the suburbs.\n\nFor 20 years Opdyke worked as a scenic painter and architectural model-maker. Ranging from intricate miniature constructions to room-sized installations\, his artwork explores globalization\, consumerism\, and civilization’s abusive relationship with the environment.\n\nThis project is supported by a grant from the Efroymson Family Fund.

DESCRIPTION:Abstract:  Biological macromolecules function in dense\, crowded cellular environments.  Early studies of crowding effects have emphasized volume exclusion effects\, but it is becoming clear that frequent non-specific interactions between proteins\, nucleic acids\, and metabolites may be the more important factor in modulating the structure and dynamics of biomolecules.  Computer simulation studies at different scales of a series of models ranging from concentrated homogeneous protein solutions to models of bacterial cytoplasms are presented to explore the effects of non-specific quinary protein-protein interactions on protein stability and dynamics.  One focus is on the formation of transient clusters that determine diffusive properties and lead to liquid-liquid phase transitions.  The computational results are related to existing experimental data and the challenges and opportunities to expand the current studies to whole-cell modeling in molecular detail are discussed.
