SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Decomposition and Interpretation of Treatment Effects in Settings with Delayed Outcomes (joint with Ivan A. Canay and Steve McBride)
DESCRIPTION:This paper studies settings where there is interest in identifying and estimating an average causal effect of a binary treatment on an outcome of interest\, under complete randomization or selection on observables assumptions. The outcome does not get immediately realized after treatment assignment\, a feature that is ubiquitous in empirical settings\, creating a time window in between the treatment and the realization of the outcome. The existence of such a time window\, in turn\, opens up the possibility of other observed endogenous actions to take place and affect the interpretation of popular parameters\, including the average treatment effect. In this context\, we study several regression-based estimands that are routinely used in empirical work\, and present five results that shed light on how to interpret them in terms of ceteris paribus effects\, indirect causal effects\, and selection terms. Our three main takeaways are the following. First\, the three most popular estimands do not satisfy what we call strong sign preservation\, in the sense these estimands may be negative even when the treatment positively affects the outcome for any possible combination of other actions. Second\, the by-far most popular estimand that ``controlls'' for the other actions in the regression does not improve upon a simple comparisons of means in the sense that negative weights multiplying relevant ceteris paribus effects become more prevalent. Finally\, while non-parametric identification of the effects we study is straightforward under our assumptions and follows from saturated regressions\, we also show that linear regressions that correctly control for the other actions by stratifying lead to estimands that always satisfy strong sign preservation.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Thursday Seminar - Hybrid Hubbell Lecture: Macroevolution to microbiomes: piecing together the puzzle to understand the evolution of the ants
DESCRIPTION:Our weekly seminar series featuring internal and external speakers in the field of ecology and evolutionary biology. This seminar will be in-person and livestreaming on Zoom (link this page).\n\nAbstract:\nTo fully understand the macroevolutionary factors that have promoted the diversification and persistence of biological diversity varied tools and disciplines must be integrated. By combining data from several fields including molecular phylogenetics/phylogenomics\, comparative genomics\, biogeographic range reconstruction\, stable isotope analyses\, and microbial community sequencing to study the evolutionary history of the insects\, we are beginning to understand the drivers of speciation and the interconnectedness of life. Comparative phylogenetic analysis reveals the interconnectedness of ants and plants and that ants diversified after the rise of the angiosperms. While studies combining stable isotope analysis to infer the trophic ecology of the ants and next-generation sequencing of gut-associated bacteria of ants highlight the importance of this microbiome association in the evolution of herbivory. Microbial contributions to ants are not limited to diet enrichment and we find evidence for their role in cuticle formation. These multiple lines of evidence are illuminating a more complete picture of ant evolution and providing novel insights into the role that symbiosis plays to promote biological diversity.\n\nContact eebsemaccess@umich.edu for Zoom password at least 2 hours prior to event.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:In-Space Design Technologies Integrated with Novel Metamaterials for Future Solar Arrays
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Today’s space structures are built on Earth\, folded for delivery to space\, and then deployed to their full size once in orbit. However\, this traditional approach yields minimal opportunities for dramatic advances in terms of mass efficiency and the operational size of the structure. This seminar presents our novel approach to designing future space structures based on metamaterial technologies and advanced manufacturing in space. By removing the constraints associated with launch and deployment\, we create a paradigm shift in the design of future structures and enable extended structures such as solar arrays\, antennas\, and optical systems where size is critical to performance. Specifically\, our team integrates novel dissipative metamaterials and topological polarization along with crumpled designs and enables future space structures that can be modularly assembled in space. Thus\, we can achieve large scalable structures beyond deployment limits and realize space designs that cannot be launched. This talk will cover the novel design of a 1MW solar array that is optimized for high precision and mass efficiency. We exploit crumpling for stiffness enhancement\, metadamping for quick stabilization\, and topological polarization for robustness and damage tolerance. We also demonstrate proof of the concept via 3D printing a lab-scale prototype which is tested in the PEPL vacuum chamber and vibration testing facilities at SPRL.\n\nBio: Dr. Serife Tol is an Assistant Professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Interdisciplinary QC-CM Seminar | From Biological Intelligence to Artificial General Intelligence: Challenges\, Opportunities and Methodologies
DESCRIPTION:Brains build compact models of the world from just a few noisy and conflicting observations. They predict events via memory-based analogies even when resources are limited. The ability of biological intelligence to generalize and complete a wide range of unknown heterogeneous tasks calls for a comprehensive understanding of how networks of interactions among neurons\, glia\, and vascular systems enable human cognition. This will serve as a basis for advancing the design of artificial general intelligence (AGI). In this talk\, we introduce a series of novel mathematical tools which can help us reconstruct networks among neurons\, infer their objectives\, and identify their learning rules. \n\nTo decode the network structure from very scarce and noisy data\, we develop the first mathematical framework which identifies the emerging causal fractal memory phenomenon in the spike trains and the neural network topologies. We show that the fractional order operators governing the neuronal spiking dynamics provide insight into the topological properties of the underlying neuronal networks and improve the prediction of animal behavior during cognitive tasks. In addition to this\, we propose a variational expectation-maximization approach to mine the optical imaging of brain activity and reconstruct the neuronal network generator\, namely the weighted multifractal graph generator. Our proposed network generator inference framework can reproduce network properties\, differentiate varying structures in brain networks and chromosomal interactions\, and detect topologically associating domain regions in conformation maps of the human genome. Moreover\, we develop a multiwavelet-based neural operator in order to infer the objectives and learning rules of complex biological systems. We thus learn the operator kernel of an unknown partial differential equation (PDE) from noisy scarce data. For time-varying PDEs\, this model exhibits 2-10X higher accuracy than state-of-the-art machine learning tools.\n\nBio: Paul Bogdan is the Jack Munushian Early Career Chair and Associate Professor in the Ming Hsieh Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at University of Southern California. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Topology seminar: Marked length pattern rigidity and Busemann cocycle
DESCRIPTION:Given a closed Riemannian manifold M\, the length of the shortest geodesic for each free homotopy class of loops on M is called the (minimal) length of the class. This gives a map called marked length spectrum. It is conjectured that the fundamental group and marked length spectrum together determine the isometric type of negatively curved manifolds. This conjecture has been verified for surfaces and locally symmetric spaces. In this talk\, we show that for negatively curved arithmetic manifolds\, the fundamental group with all pairs of different equal length classes\, i.e.\, marked length pattern\, is enough to recover the metric up to scaling. The central idea is marked length spectrum rigidity of cocycles.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Hallucinations and objective assessments of deep learning technologies for medical image formation
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nA variety of deep learning-based image restoration and reconstruction methods\, generically referred to as image formation methods\, have been proposed for use with biomedical images. It is widely accepted that the assessment and refinement of biomedical imaging technologies should be performed by objective\, i.e.\, task-based\, measures of image quality (IQ). However\, the objective evaluation of deep learning-based image formation technologies remains largely lacking\, despite the breakneck speed at which they are being developed. As such\, there is an ever-growing collection of methods whose utility and trustworthiness remains largely unknown. Moreover\, such methods have the capability to ‘hallucinate’ false structures\, which is of significant concern in medical imaging applications. In this work\, we report studies in which the performance of deep learning-based image restoration methods is objectively assessed. The performance of the ideal observer (IO) and common linear numerical observers are quantified\, and detection efficiencies are computed to assess the impact of deep learning image formation methods on signal detection performance. The numerical results indicate that\, in the cases considered\, the application of a deep image formation network can result in a loss of task-relevant information in the image\, despite improvement in traditional computer-vision metrics. We also demonstrate that traditional and objective IQ measures can vary in opposite ways as a function of network depth. These results highlight the need for the objective evaluation of IQ for deep image formation technologies and may suggest future avenues for improving the effectiveness of medical imaging applications. \n\nBio:\nDr. Mark Anastasio is the Donald Biggar Willett Professor in Engineering and the Head of the Department of Bioengineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CANCELED: DSI Lecture Series | The “Great White Way”: Photography and America’s White Imaginary
DESCRIPTION:In the twenty-first century\, large-scale media spectacles are ubiquitous in metropolises around the world. These polychromatic spectacles offer a diversity of colors and scintillating delights\, though they fail to acknowledge––by their very design––how they also perpetuate historically entrenched legacies of chromophobia. This talk responds to this odd contradiction by leaping backwards in time\, to analyze the tensions and power struggles in the history of illuminated light in the American city in the late-nineteenth and early twentieth-centuries. The polemic between old world (European) whiteness and the explosive colors that mark America's twentieth-century “white imaginary” are charted through an archaeological critique of early advertising\, photography\, and the development of electric palettes for large-scale illuminated signs. By zeroing in on the “White City” at Chicago’s 1893 Columbian World’s Fair\, and New York City’s “Great White Way” in the 1910s-1930s\, I argue that a new training ground was forged for the American subject\, engendering a unique brand of spectatorship rooted in visual possession by way of spectacle-based consumption.\n\nCarolyn L. Kane is the author of \"High-Tech Trash: Glitch\, Noise\, and Aesthetic Failure\" (University of California Press\, 2019) and \"Chromatic Algorithms: Synthetic Color\, Computer Art\, and Aesthetics After Code\" (University of Chicago Press\, 2014). Her current monograph\, \"Electrographic Architecture: New York Color\, Las Vegas Light\, and America’s White Imaginary\" is forthcoming from the University of California Press in 2023. More information can be found here: https://www.torontomu.ca/kane/\n\nLida Zeitlin-Wu is a DISCO Network Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Michigan. She is a scholar of screen-based media and visual culture whose research focuses on the commodification and quantification of sensory experience under global techno-capitalism. Her current book project\, \"Seeing By Numbers\" traces how color systems—diagrams and models that attempt to encompass the full range of human color vision—came to play a key role in engineering perception over the course of the 20th century. \n\nWe want to make our events accessible to all participants. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CAS 2023 International Graduate Student Workshop | The Quotidian and the Divine: Early Modern Gendered Economies of Monasticism in the Eastern Christian World
DESCRIPTION:Over the decades\, the Center for Armenian Studies at U-M has fostered a critical dialogue with graduate students around the globe through our annual graduate student workshops. Together with our faculty\, graduate students\, visiting and post-doctoral fellows we have pushed scholarship in Armenian Studies in new directions through our collective efforts. Our interventions in the study of Armenian history\, literature\, translation studies\, materiality and the visual arts can be gauged by a carefully curated set of initiatives we have undertaken that will have a long-term impact on the field. The Twelfth Annual International Graduate Student Workshop is a great opportunity to bring together a wide range of disciplines that have engaged closely or obliquely with Christian monasticism.\n\nScholars of the Ottoman Empire and the Middle East have highlighted the complexities of cultural and social life in the empire’s provinces\, yet monasticism and monastic life as a social institution remain unstudied. Monasteries have been explored as sites of state cooperation and their leaders as agents of the state\, but how can a focus on the social and economic life of monasteries critically reassess themes such as piety\, community\, and empire?\n\nThe church was a critical institution for the physical and spiritual livelihood of Armenians and other Eastern Christian communities. Monasticism existed interdependent of the church\; monks and nuns sustained the church’s labor as spiritual shepherds of their communities and served as material stewards of the land and holy spaces. Gendered aspects of monastic life\, including the protocols of sexual and spiritual discipline that shaped intimacy and religious life (e.g.\, celibacy)\, offer rich vantage points through which the social fabric of confessional communities comes into view. The multiple social\, sexual\, and spiritual hierarchies that configured these spaces and the relationships they created have yet to be examined.\n \nApril 6th Keynote Address I\n4:00 pm - 5:30 pm\n1014 Tisch Hall\n\nAlbrecht Diem\, Syracuse University\n*Was the First Medieval Monk a Woman? - Reconsidered*\n\nZoom Meeting ID:\n959 3416 0523\nhttp://umich.zoom.us/j/95934160523\n\n*This workshop\, sponsored by the University of Michigan’s Center for Armenian Studies and funded by the Alex Manoogian Foundation\, is organized by Kathryn Babayan (Department of History & Middle East Studies\, U-M) and Kelly Hannavi\, PhD Candidate (Department of History & Women’s Studies\, U-M)*.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at armenianstudies@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Geometrization of the local Langlands program 1
DESCRIPTION:In geometric Langlands\, you start with a curve X\, and try to put into correspondence two very different-looking entities: Local systems of rank n on X on the one hand\, and Hecke eigensheaves on Bun_n(X) on the other. In the recent work of Fargues-Scholze\, there is a beautiful conjectural extension of this story to the p-adic setting. In that setting\, the role of X is played by the Fargues-Fontaine curve\, and the local systems are Galois representations. \n\nThe conjecture of Fargues-Scholze has impressive explanatory power when it comes to the local Langlands program. For instance\, it implies all cases of the Kottwitz conjecture on the cohomology of local shtuka spaces. We only know certain cases of that conjecture\, notably for the Lubin-Tate tower (Harris-Taylor). We will discuss work with Hansen and Kaletha detailing partial results on the Kottwitz conjecture.

SUMMARY:Other:Immunomodulation studies made using nanoparticles and small molecules delivered in vitro and in vivo: examples using lipid nanoparticles as well as chitosan micelles in cancer models
DESCRIPTION: The widespread use of lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) for vaccines during the pandemic has advanced them to become arguably the leading nanomedicine technology. LNPs offer a way to deliver a concentrated payload. If delivered systemically\, the LNPs also protect the nucleic acids from nucleases. The rules around their preparation and mechanisms for delivery to cells and endosomal release are still in development. The seminar will describe LNP integration into a high throughput experiment to screen in vitro for immunogenic cell death interactions between microphages and target cancer cells. The development of bright\, Raman-active\, liposomal NP labels for flow cytometry and chitosan-based radioactive labeling experiments for in vivo non-invasive hepatocyte function assessment will also be presented. \n \n \nGilbert Walker (University of Toronto)

After completing a workshop\, students will be able to immediately implement their learnings to create lasting personal and organizational impact.\n\nWorkshop description: \nYou’ve probably heard that “knowing your why” is the heart of motivation\, but perhaps accessing your why seems difficult. This is true for many of us. Join us for this accelerator where we will demystify the process of tapping into a sense of purpose and share practices that help you bring your unique why to life. Accelerate your purpose in your studies and in your work on a more regular basis with evidence-based methods that make your purpose accessible in your everyday activities. You will gain access to a reliable source of motivation that you can call on whenever you need it\, and you will learn to work with others to help them tap into this source of inspiration as well. Accelerating our sense of purpose on a daily basis involves celebrating the contributions we make to a community\, as well as elevating the contribution of others\, so this accelerator will conclude with a fun and energizing celebration of all the people who contributed to our thriving this year.\n-\nInstructors:\nBetsy Erwin\, Senior Associate Director\, Faculty Associate\, Co-Director Engaged Learning and Innovation\, Center for Positive Organizations\n\nMonica Worline\, Faculty Director of Engaged Learning and Innovation\, Center for Positive Organizations\n\nOpen to all University of Michigan students. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Rightly Transforming Right-Skewed Data
DESCRIPTION:Data transformations often facilitate regression analysis\, yet many commonly used transformations make hypothesis testing misleading because the results depend on the measurement units of the data. This paper establishes a six-way equivalence that fully characterizes the set of transformations for which the conclusions are independent of measurement units. Central to these results are the concepts of scale equivariance (that any scaling of the data can be reversed by appropriately rescaling the estimator) and scale invariance (that any scaling of the data does not affect the estimator). The equivalence result demonstrates that desirable properties such as scale-equivariant coefficient estimates\, scale-invariant t-statistics\, and scale-invariant semi-elasticities arise if and only if the transformation is a logarithmic or a power function. Power transformations thus provide a natural extension of logarithmic transformations that both preserves the essential feature of obtaining unit-independent estimates for unitless quantities of interest and is defined at zero. Popular alternatives that approximate the shape of the logarithmic function at large values\, such as adding a small positive constant before applying a logarithmic transformation or the inverse hyperbolic sine transformation\, can result in arbitrarily large semi-elasticity estimates and can change sign and statistical significance depending on the choice of measurement units\, which we highlight both theoretically and empirically.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CANCELED: Lynn Goldsmith
DESCRIPTION:The Lynn Goldsmith event scheduled for April 6\, 2023 has been canceled due to illness and will be rescheduled at a later date. \nOver the past 50 years Lynn Goldsmith has been an inventor\, a filmmaker\, a director for network television\, a co-manager of a rock band\, a songwriter and recording artist\, a business owner\, crusader for copyright protection\, and consistently\, through it all\, a photographer.\nLynn Goldsmith’s photographic images are in numerous museum collections\, including The Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery\, The Museum of Modern Art\, The Chicago Museum of Contemporary Photography\, The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame\, Museum Folkwang\, The Polaroid Collection\, and The Kodak Collection. Her work over the past 50 years in the editorial world has appeared on and between the covers of publications including Life\, Newsweek\, Time\, Vanity Fair\, Rolling Stone\, National Geographic Traveler\, Sports Illustrated\, People\, Elle\, Interview\, The New Yorker. The subjects have varied from entertainment personalities to sports stars\, from film directors to authors\, from the extraordinary to the ordinary man on the street. Winning numerous prestigious awards from the Lucien Clergue to the World Press in Portraiture\, to the Lucie for Portraiture in 2020. She was included in Chronicle Book’s publication 200 Women Who Will Change the Way You See the World.\nGoldsmith was the founder of the first photo agency to focus on celebrity portraiture\, representing the work of over two hundred worldwide photographers. Part of founding the agency was to make more photographers aware of the importance of copyright. For the past 4 years she has been fighting a legal battle with the Warhol Foundation which is based on making sure that the copyright law does not become so diluted by the definition of fair use that visual artists lose the rights to their work. \nBy the early 80’s\, Goldsmith expanded her creativity to become the first ‘optic-music’ artist. Using the alias Will Powers\, she wrote and produced the album Dancing For Mental Health released on Island Records. Working with acclaimed musicians Sting\, Steve Winwood\, Todd Rundgren\, and Nile Rodgers\, her debut album won critical acclaim and the single\, “Kissing With Confidence\,” reached #3 on the British charts. The roots of her music came from the experience of being in a band\, The Walking Wounded\, while attending the University of Michigan where she graduated in 3 years Magna Cum Laude with a B.A. in both English and Psychology.\nLynn Goldsmith’s talk will focus on the music of the 1980’s. Her latest book explores the 1980’s\, a decade where more new forms of music and fashion were all popular simultaneously. It was also the decade in which Goldsmith made the album Dancing For Mental Health\, which delivers the message she puts into all her work: break limiting thought patterns\, bust through fear\, take risks\, and persistently work hard toward your goals.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:M-CLIC presents: CLIC-N-CUTZ Barbershop Series (Apr 6\, 2023)
DESCRIPTION:The Men of Color Leading in the Classroom program (M-CLIC) presents the \"CLIC-N-CUTZ\" Barbershop Series! This unique\, informative\, and safe-spaced barbershop experience invites all U-M attendees of any race or gender to meet and fellowship!\"Finding Purpose Through Service!\"Join us for the final barbershop series workshop of the semester! There is no secret that the persistence\, retention\, and graduation rate of males of color are the lowest in the nation. We need more men of color to become educators\, but we also need men in positions of service as volunteers and mentors. This Thursday\, we discuss why it is every man's responsibility to be of service to the next generation of young people. Beyond free haircuts from licensed barbers and refreshments in a comfortable environment\, participants are encouraged to engage in a meaningful dialogue about critical issues that affect men of color in education while brainstorming effective solutions to counteract some of the stresses that males of color face today.\n\"CLIC-N-CUTZ\"...A Cut Above the Rest! The mission of Men of Color Leading In the Classroom (M-CLIC) is to increase and impact the number of African American\, Latino\, Native\, and Asian males entering the teaching profession. However\, this program is open to all U-M students of any race or gender interested in enrolling in the School of Education at the University of Michigan and pursuing a career in education post-graduation.

SUMMARY:Film Screening:Ukrainian Film Series — Winter 2023
DESCRIPTION:Ukrainian Film Series\n\nThursday\, February 9th\nLocation: MLB Aud 3 (MLB 1200)\nMariupol: The Chronicles of Hell\nThe fall of one of Ukraine's major cities\nMariupol — ruined but not conquered. The city in the east of Ukraine has survived the occupation\, total destruction\, and a humanitarian catastrophe. The story of Mariupol is an especially horrifying one\, with accounts reported that occupiers were murdering civilians\, and actively preventing them from escaping. This film is the story of the survivors\, and their life in a hell on Earth. Yet it's also a testament to the power of resilience\, and Ukrainian fighting spirit.\n\nThursday\, March 9th\nLocation: MLB Aud 3 (MLB 1200)\nПОВОДИР (The Guide) \nSoviet Ukraine\, the 1930s. American engineer Michael Shamrock arrives in Kharkiv with his ten-year-old son\, Peter to help \"build socialism\". He falls in love with an actress Olga who has another admirer\, Commissar Vladimir.\nUnder tragic circumstances\, the American is killed and his son is saved from his pursuers by a blind bard (kobzar). With no other chance to survive in a foreign land\, the boy becomes his guide.\n\nThursday\, April 6\nLocation: MLB Aud 3 (MLB 1200)\nShadows of Forgotten Ancestors\, Ukrainian: Тіні забутих предків\nA 1965 Ukrainian film by the filmmaker Sergei Parajanov based on the novel Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors by Ukrainian writer Mykhailo Kotsiubynsky that tells a \"Romeo and Juliet tale\" of young Ukrainian Hutsul lovers trapped on opposite sides of a Carpathian family blood feud.[2][3] New York Film Festival program described the film as an \"avant-garde\, extravagant\, sumptuous saga\" and a \"haunting work\" that combined folk songs and atonal music with fantastic camera work.[5] Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors is considered to be the most internationally heralded Ukrainian film in history\,[6] and a classic of Ukrainian magical realist cinema.[7]

SUMMARY:Performance:Julian Taylor
DESCRIPTION:After 25 years in music\, building an unimpeachable reputation as a truly independent artist and entrepreneur\, Julian Taylor now owns his legacy. From the formative rock of Staggered Crossing to the genre fusion of Julian Taylor Band\, and now his revered work as a solo singer-songwriter\, Julian owns the right to it all and it couldn’t have happened at a better time. It’s rare in this era to see an artist build slowly and reach a new level of widespread acclaim two decades into a career. But Julian’s ethos\, work ethic\, and artistry has always had a timeless quality to it. And so\, he’s built things slowly in a DIY fashion\, withstanding highs and lows along the way\, ultimately reaching the peak of his powers with his latest solo work. Fans and critics have noticed\, granting Julian the Solo Artist of the Year honour at the Canadian Folk Music Awards (and nomination in the English Songwriter category)\, plus two Juno Award nominations in 2021\, as well as a Polaris Music Prize nomination. And that baritone voice—you have to hear it! Julian comes from Toronto with a new album\, “Beyond the Reservoir.”

SUMMARY:Exhibition:CCPS Exhibition. Survivors Saving Survivors: Photographing the Ukrainian Refugee Experience in Poland
DESCRIPTION:In April and June 2022\, at the invitation of JCC Krakow\, Chuck Fishman traveled to Poland to document the JCC and the Jewish community’s commitment to helping Ukrainian refugees fleeing their war-torn country. What he witnessed and captured in a series of gripping photographs is *tikkun olam*\, a central concept in Judaism that denotes activities that repair and improve the world we live in. The exhibit shifts the lens away from the horror the refugees have endured to focus instead on human goodness and how it can overcome lingering evil.\n\nIn his 45-year career\, freelance photographer Chuck Fishman has focused on social and political issues with a strong humanistic concern. His work on Jewish life in Poland\, begun in 1975\, continues to the present day. Fishman’s work has been extensively published\, exhibited\, and collected worldwide\, and has earned him prestigious World Press Photo Foundation medals four times.
The multiple social\, sexual\, and spiritual hierarchies that configured these spaces and the relationships they created have yet to be examined.\n\nZoom Meeting ID:\n959 3416 0523\nhttp://umich.zoom.us/j/95934160523\n\nApril 7th Workshop\n10:00 am to 4:00 pm\n555 Weiser Hall\n\nSession I 10:00 am - 11:30 am\n*Early Modern Monastic Piety and Bodily Sensibilities*\nRespondent: Megan Holmes\, History of Art\, University of Michigan\n\nHaley E. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Early Astronomy in the University of Michigan Collections
DESCRIPTION:Trace how astronomy was developed\, studied\, and disseminated through the centuries\, from 1500 BCE to the Renaissance. On display is material drawn from the University of Michigan collections dealing with the history of early astronomy: manuscripts\, early printed books\, and artifacts illustrating Mesopotamian\, Greek\, Islamic\, and Western European astronomy.\n\nThis exhibit and its permanent online counterpart (https://umlib.us/earlyastronomy) are part of the Aratus Project\, which was sponsored by the National Science Foundation and led by Prof. Francesca Schironi. The core of the project has been to study Aratus’ \"Phaenomena\,\" the most important poem on stars and constellations of the Graeco-Roman ancient world\, and its exegetical tradition. Read an annotated edition and English translation of \"Phaenomena\" and its commentaries (https://aratus.classics.lsa.umich.edu/). The physical and online exhibits place this research work within its later intellectual and historical context.\n\nCurated by: John Steele\, Professor of the History of the Exact Sciences in Antiquity\, Department of Egyptology and Assyriology\, Brown University\; Francesca Schironi\, U-M Professor of Classical Studies\; Evyn Kropf\, U-M Librarian for Middle Eastern & North African Studies\; Pablo Alvarez\, U-M Curator (Special Collections Research Center).\n\nCheck Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours: https://myumi.ch/2mx44

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Error bound characterizations of conical constraint qualification in convex programming
DESCRIPTION:This talk deals with error bound characterizations of the conical constraint qualification (CCQ) for convex inequality systems in a Banach space. We establish necessary and sufficient conditions for a closed convex set defined by a convex function to have CCQ. We show that these characterizations only take place in certain very specific situations.\n\nWe give technical examples showing that these characterizations are limited to these ones. We introduce a new condition in terms of the gauge function which allows us to give an error bound characterization of convex nondifferentiable systems and to obtain as a direct consequence different characterizations of the concept of the strong conical hull intersection property (CHIP) for a finite collection of convex sets.\n\nThis is based on the joint work with A. Barbara.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Portraits of Feminism in Japan
DESCRIPTION:What is feminism in Japan? Rather than imagining it as a singular\, coherent object\, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity\, difference\, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts\, “feminism” in Japan can invoke sharply different associations\, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority\, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters\, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families\, workplaces\, schools\, political institutions\, and laws\, among many other contexts. Many – but certainly not all – feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects\, working toward recognition\, repair\, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\n\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Created by nine contemporary artists in Japan and the United States\, the portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of \"feminism\" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences\, needs\, and activism within Japan. This exhibit also spotlights the history of Japanese studies at the University of Michigan in conjunction with the Center for Japanese Studies' 75th anniversary celebration. \n\n“Portraits of Feminism in Japan” is open for viewing M-F 9am-4pm or by appointment. University of Michigan instructors can email LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu to request a group tour or schedule a class visit.\n\nFeatured artists:\nElaine Cromie\, JenClare B. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Colluding Against Environmental Regulation
DESCRIPTION:We study collusion among firms against imperfectly monitored environmental regulation. Firms increase variable profits by violating regulation and reduce expected noncompliance penalties by violating jointly. We consider a case of three German automakers colluding to reduce the effectiveness of emission control technology. By estimating a structural model of the European automobile industry from 2007 to 2018\, we find that the collusion lowers expected noncompliance penalties substantially and increases buyer and producer surplus. Welfare decreases by € 0.73–2.51 billion because of increased pollution. We show how environmental policy design and antitrust play complementary roles in preventing noncompliance.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Humanize the Numbers
DESCRIPTION:Prison Creative Arts Project presents an exhibition of collaborative photography at the Detroit Historical Museum (5401 Woodward Ave. in Detroit)\, open now through May 21st.\n\nA public reception will be held on March 9th\, 6:00–9:00 PM\, with a panel of previous workshop participants at 7:00 PM.\n\nWe hope you will be able to see the exhibit\, and please be in touch if you have any questions.\n\nHumanize the Numbers shows the perspectives of men in Michigan prisons. The prison system regulates every part of an inmate's identity. Instead of using their name\, they are given an ID number. Visiting room photos and mug shots are tightly regulated. Personal info is recorded: height\, weight\, etc. In the process\, their humanity is denied.\n\nThis exhibit at the Detroit Historical Museum reveals the faces and stories of those in prison. It lifts up the voices of those who have been silenced by the criminal legal system. The Humanize the Numbers project gives them a freedom not normally allowed in prison. They share their stories with the world outside. By doing so\, those in prison reclaim their humanity.\n\nMuseum hours\nThursdays–Saturdays: 10:00 AM–5:00PM \nSundays: 1:00–5:00 PM

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Statistics Department Seminar Series: Yen-Chi Chen\, Assistant Professor\, Department of Statistics\, University of Washington
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: We introduce the concept of pattern graphs--directed acyclic graphs representing how response patterns are associated. A pattern graph represents an identifying restriction that is nonparametrically identified/saturated and is often a missing not at random restriction. We introduce a selection model and a pattern mixture model formulation using the pattern graphs and show that they are equivalent. A pattern graph leads to an inverse probability weighting estimator as well as an imputation-based estimator. We also study the semi-parametric efficiency theory and derive a multiply-robust estimator using pattern graphs.\n\nhttps://stat.uw.edu/about-us/people/yen-chi-chen

SUMMARY:Exhibition:UN/EARTH
DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:\"Synthetic Developmental Biology: Cross-species Comparison and Manipulation of Organiods( VIRTUAL)
DESCRIPTION:ABSTRACT: While mechanisms of embryonic development are well conserved among mammals\, the progression speed tends to be slower in larger species. To study differences in time between species\, my group uses in vitro systems. We have recently recapitulated the segmentation clock\, oscillatory gene expression during early development\, from human and mouse pluripotent stem cells. The oscillation period of the human segmentation clock is 5-6 hours\, while the mouse period is 2-3 hours. We found that this period difference between species stems from slower biochemical reactions in human cells\, including slower protein degradation and longer delays in gene expression processes. Now we are extending this approach of cross-species comparison to other mammalian species\, including the marmoset and rhinoceros\, and other developmental processes. In parallel\, we develop genetic tools to manipulate developmental processes and organoids.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CSEAS Lecture Series. From the “Bloody Crown” to space travel: Comparing the social imaginaries of Malay and English language novels in Brunei Darussalam
DESCRIPTION:The first Malay language novel in Brunei can be traced back to 1951. Despite a high level of literacy and widespread proficiency in English\, it was only in 2009 that the first Bruneian novel in English was published. This lecture will offer a brief overview of Bruneian literature from its origins to the present\, exploring the different literary and development trajectories taken by Malay language and Anglophone literature in Brunei. Using Driscoll\, Fletcher\, and Wilkins’ notion of genre worlds (2022) to map out the social\, textual\, and industrial conventions that govern the production of literature in Brunei\, this lecture will then offer some reflections on how contemporary Bruneian novels in Malay and English have developed diverging social imaginaries about Bruneian identity. \n\nIn particular\, this lecture will consider how contemporary literature in Malay and English has been influenced by an awareness of representations of Brunei from outside the country and discuss the various narrative and paratextual tactics that have been employed in engagement with the claims of the global imaginary. \n\nSpeaker Bio:\nKathrina Mohd Daud is an assistant professor in creative writing and literature in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences\, Universiti Brunei Darussalam. She holds a PhD in creative writing from the University of Manchester (2011)\, and her research focuses on the intersections of popular fiction\, Bruneian fiction\, and representations of religion in literature. She co-edited T*he Southeast Asian Woman Writes Back: Gender\, Identity and Nation in the Literatures of Brunei Darussalam\, Malaysia\, Indonesia and the Philippines* (Springer\, 2017)\, and her work has appeared in volumes published by Routledge and Springer\, as well as in the Journal of Commonwealth Literature and World Englishes. Her debut novel\, T*he Fisherman King* (2020)\, was shortlisted for the 2020 Epigram Books Fiction Prize. Her second novel\, T*he Witch Doctor’s Daughter*\, was published in 2022. \n\nRegister here: http://myumi.ch/84pgZ\n\n---\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact cseas@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Flash Talk | From Qift to Karanis: Egyptian Laborers in Michigan's Fayum Excavations
DESCRIPTION:This Flash Talk centers on a small handful of Arabic documents from Michigan's excavations at Karanis preserved in U-M's Bentley Historical Library. The texts open a rare window into the socioeconomic life of the Egyptian laborers employed by Michigan in the 1920s and 1930s. Most of these workers were not Fayum locals but were instead migrants from the town of Qift some 300 miles south\, where they had acquired considerable archaeological expertise on digs led by the famous British Egyptologist William Flinders Petrie. These documents thus shed light on Michigan's dependence on the networks of labor and expertise created by European colonialism in Egypt\, and hint at some of the difficulties these migrant laborers faced when far from home.\n\nKelsey Museum Flash Talks are 15-minute Zoom lectures by Kelsey curators\, staff members\, researchers\, and graduate students talking about their recent research or current projects. Each presentation is followed by 15 minutes of Q&A. Flash Talks are free and open to all visitors. They take place at noon on the first Friday of every month.\n\nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/96490889658\nMeeting ID: 964 9088 9658\nPasscode: Kelsey

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:LAGS Seminar | Preparing Technical Specialists for Management / Leadership Responsibilities
DESCRIPTION:In-Person Seminar or \nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/95573161835\nMeeting ID: 955 7316 1835\nPasscode: 054136\n\nDuring our professional careers\, we may find ourselves transitioning from a technical specialist fixed in a particular area to leading a project\, or serving as a department manager. However\, unless a company has a specific managerial succession or leadership development program\, management / leadership styles are often learned by mirroring early personal experiences\, typically involving family\, teachers\, coaches\, and supervisors. Although success can be quantified by achieving schedule and budget milestones\, is the manager / leader mystique of success attributed to natural talent\, timing\, mentoring\, or a combination of these factors? This presentation discusses the practical core elements that contribute to becoming an effective manager and visionary leader.

DESCRIPTION:Speakers: \n\nKimberly Ransom\, PhD (MSP18) Illinois Distinguished Postdoctoral Research Fellow\, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign College of Education\n\nPelle Tracey (MSP21) PhD candidate at the UM School of Information\n\nChicago's Rebuild Foundation's Stony Island Arts Bank\n(Kimberly Ransom)\nWhile interning at Rebuild Foundation’s Stony Island Arts Bank (SAB) in Chicago\, Kimberly Ransom has reviewed the objects and documents in the Ed Williams Black Memorabilia Collection to help Rebuild Artist-Fellows learn how to engage and use the archive as data to inspire and create new art. As an interdisciplinary historian\, Kimberly has also leveraged the collection to further her research and public-facing scholarship. Specifically\, she has examined a collection of early 20 th century postcards with malicious depictions of Black children. Kimberly aims to use the collection to create a counter-narrative of historical photographs that benevolently depict Black children in and around schools on Chicago’s Southside\, visually positioning them as possessors of childhood in the public imagination. In her presentation\, Kimberly will discuss her experience and how community museums and archives can expand historical scholarship toward community art and action.\n\n\nThe Philadelphia Institute of Contemporary Art\n(Pelle Tracey)\nIn the summer of 2022\, Pelle Tracey interned at the Philadelphia Institute of Contemporary Art under the supervision of Assistant Curator Alex Klein. In this presentation\, Pelle will describe two of the main projects he pursued: archiving a recent long-term collaboration between the ICA and the Dakar\, Senegal-based art institution RAW Material Company\, and conducting oral history interviews with Los Angeles artist Carl Cheng. Through these projects Pelle learned a great deal about how a contemporary art museum functions\, and how a museum focused on the future of art engages with the past.\n\nJoin via Zoom: https://umich.zoom.us/j/99128919196

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The American Institutions Group (AIG)
DESCRIPTION:The American Institutions Group (AIG) is a Rackham interdisciplinary workshop for faculty and graduate students that meets twice a month to discuss recent and forthcoming research on American political institutions (e.g. Congress\, the presidency\, state legislatures and governors\, the courts\, and the bureaucracy). We aim to offer new and varied perspectives for graduate students to harness in their own work\; encourage conversations that breed new research ideas\; and spur innovative collaborations among our participants. AIG participants are scholars in political science\, public health\, social work\, public policy\, and economics interested in examining American political institutions from a wide variety of perspectives.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Buahit Serit Rock Art and other Archaeological Sites along the Blue Nile Valley of Ethiopia
DESCRIPTION:This work presents previously unknown rock art along the Blue Nile\, on the walls of the Buahit Serit gorge in Northwestern Ethiopia. Although Ethiopia has the largest number of rock art sites in the Horn of Africa\, Buahit Serit is the first documented rock art site in Northwestern Ethiopia. The rock paintings display hunting\, herding\, and geometric representations\, based on a comparison of the motifs and painting style\, the site dated relative to the late Holocene (1000 BCE–1000 CE). Further interpretation introduces the idea that some geometric designs may represent stylized headdresses\, suggesting cultural continuity with living pastoralists. Complementary survey in this region indicates a potential settlement\, burial site\, iron slags\, and lithic concentrations. Unfortunately\, today the Buahit Serit rock paintings\, like many Ethiopian rock art sites\, are endangered due to anthropogenic and natural causes.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Making Everyday Leadership a Reality: Lessons from a 15-year Research Journey
DESCRIPTION:People often want to lead more from wherever they “sit” in organizations. Companies also often say that they want more leadership from more places in their organization\, but we’ve historically done little research to understand what might prompt more people to engage in such leadership\, what deterrents they might face in doing so\, and what processes are involved in bringing it about. This talk describes a 15-year journey into exploring these questions. In the talk I will pause to consider notable “sights” along the journey’s path (e.g.\, critical constructs and several studies). I will also identify lessons learned and possibilities for future research as I (and hopefully others) continue a journey of discovery regarding this important topic.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Inertial Updating
DESCRIPTION:We introduce and characterize inertial updating of beliefs. Under inertial updating\, a decision maker (DM) chooses a belief that minimizes the subjective distance between their prior belief and the set of beliefs consistent with the observed event. Importantly\, by varying the subjective notion of distance\, inertial updating provides a unifying framework that nests three different types of belief updating: (i) Bayesian updating\, (ii) non-Bayesian updating rules such as the α−β rule (Grether\, 1980)\, and (iii) updating rules for events with zero probability\, like the conditional probability system (CPS) of Myerson (1986a\,b). We demonstrate that our model is behaviorally equivalent to the Hypothesis Testing model (HT) of Ortoleva (2012)\, clarifying the connection between HT and CPS. We apply our model to a persuasion game.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CANCELLED: Department Colloquium
DESCRIPTION:Title: “The Toxic Ideology of Longtermism” \n\nAbstract: \nThis lecture criticizes the intellectual tradition “longtermism” as an ideology\, for its damaging real-world effects as well as for its reliance on a flawed ethical theory. Longtermism is an outgrowth of Effective Altruism (EA)\, a utilitarianism-inspired philanthropic program founded just over a decade ago by young Oxford philosophers Toby Ord and William MacAskill. EA\, which claims to guide charitable giving to do the ‘most good’ per expenditure of time or money\, originally focused on mitigating the effects of poverty in the global South and of the treatment of animals in factory farms. This initially modestly-funded\, Oxford-based enterprise soon had satellites in the UK\, US\, and elsewhere in the world\, several of which became multi-million-dollar organisations\, while the amount of money directed by EA-affiliated groups swelled to over four hundred million dollars annually\, with pledges in the tens of billions. During this period\, Ord and MacAskill started using the term ‘longtermism’ to mark a view championed by members of a conspicuous subset of effective altruists. The view is that humanity is at a crossroads at which we may either self-destruct or realize a glorious future\, and that we should prioritize responding to threats to the continued existence of human civilization. The ‘existential risks’ that longtermists rank as most probable are AI unaligned with liberal values and deadly engineered pathogens. They urge us to combat these risks to make it likelier that humans (or our digitally intelligent descendants) will live on for millions\, billions\, or even trillions of years\, surviving until long after the sun has vaporised the earth by colonizing exoplanets. The longtermist enterprise has been publicly thrashed for its ties to the crypto exchange FTX\, which declared bankruptcy in mid-November 2022\, but the movement remains well-funded and well-positioned to repair its reputation and go on enlisting earnest individuals to energetically support and spread it. There is a pressing need to criticize its theoretical weaknesses and forcefully bring out its material harms\, exposing it as the toxic ideology it is.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Combinatorics Seminar -- An SL(4) web basis from hourglass plabic graphs
DESCRIPTION:The SL(3) web basis is a special basis of certain spaces of tensor invariants developed in the late 90's by Khovanov and Kuperberg as a tool for computing quantum link invariants. Since then this basis has found connections and applications to cluster algebras\, canonical bases\, dimer models\, and tableau combinatorics. The main open problem has remained: how to find a basis replicating the desirable properties of this basis for SL(4) and beyond? I will describe joint work with Oliver Pechenik\, Stephan Pfannerer\, Jessica Striker\, and Josh Swanson in which we construct such a basis for SL(4). Modified versions of plabic graphs and the six-vertex model and new tableau combinatorics will appear along the way\, but knowledge of these topics won't be assumed in the talk.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Seminar | Top Down Topological Holography and Twists on Twistor Space
DESCRIPTION:I will discuss recent work in collaboration with Kevin Costello and Atul Sharma. Aspects of the holographic correspondence can be understood mathematically through a framework called twisted holography\, which has been applied to AdS/CFT to compute certain protected correlators. In this talk we will apply these ideas to describe a new holographic duality for a bulk theory in an asymptotically flat spacetime which arises from studying twisted holography on twistor space. The ``boundary'' 2d chiral algebra\, which is dual to the algebra of bulk asymptotic symmetries\, can be described using a mathematical technique called Koszul duality. Alternatively\, the 4d and 2d theories are independently defined from top-down string theoretic reasoning\, and we match OPEs with collinear limits of scattering amplitudes in the planar limit as a check.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture - Dr. Adam Simon\, University of Michigan
DESCRIPTION:Transitioning to an energy infrastructure entirely reliant on a combination of photovoltaic solar\, wind turbines\, electric vehicles and grid-scale battery storage requires production of metals from new mineral deposits on an unprecedented scale. Manufacturing and deploying these renewable energy resources requires dozens of metals\, including boron\, cobalt\, copper\, lithium\, nickel\, tellurium\, tin and many others. What types of mineral deposits do those metals come from? What are the geologic constraints on their availability? What are the economic constraints on their availability? What are the geopolitical constraints on their availability? How do environmental permitting constraints impact the timeframe for production and delivery to market? SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Geometrization of the local Langlands program 2

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:GEOMETRY SEMINAR
DESCRIPTION:Dehn functions of finitely presented groups is one of the central topics in geometric group theory. We care about the following question: for an automorphism of a hyperbolic group\, does the corresponding mapping torus always have a quadratic isoperimetric inequality? This question has an affirmative answer for surface groups and free groups. In this talk\, I will discuss recent developments in automorphisms of one-ended torsion-free hyperbolic groups.

Cochlear vibrations are processed by inner hair cells and outer hair cells (OHCs). Our focus is on the OHCs that nonlinearly amplify the sound converting a time-varying motion of its apically adorned hair bundle (HB) to an alternating current. The OHC HB consists of roughly three rows of stereocilia arranged according to their heights. Understanding how the bundle stiffness\, sensitivity\, and transduction current depend on the physiology and anatomy of the stereocilia is crucial and an open question. Therefore\, we are developing a three-row model of an isolated HB to quantify each row’s contribution to the passive and active mechanics of the HB. The derived equations of motion include the nonlinear kinematics\, viscoelastic HB mechanics\, and the nonlinear response of the mechano-electric transducer channels coupled to an adaptation mechanism. We also linearize the model to conduct stability analysis and determine the dependence of the responses on the rate constants. Our preliminary results show a higher current influx through the middle row than the shortest row and closely predicts the biophysical parameters like the sensitivity and stiffness of the bundle.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CSAS Trautmann Honorary Lecture | Bhoja Among the Gonds: Place\, Memory and the Afterlives of Kingship in Medieval India
DESCRIPTION:The presentation will consider the social memory of the eleventh-century medieval king Bhoja\, widely known as a polymath\, author\, patron\, and adventurer across a wide array of local\, regional and pan-regional communities in South Asia. Bhoja\, unlike other kings that have been studied under the rubric of 'popular memory'\, is not primarily associated with a 'heroic' tradition of memory in early modern India. The talk will explore his life and actions as remembered by communities of itinerants\, Adivasis\, and others with seemingly little or no connection to the highly textualized memories preserved among bardic\, monastic and courtly societies that have left the greatest textual legacies of the king for modern scholars. The presentation will outline an overview of the project before focusing on Bhoja’s memory among itinerants and forest-dwellers to suggest several important conclusions about collective memory\, kingship\, and place that have not been addressed by existing scholarship.\n \n Dr Daud Ali is Associate in the Department of South Asian Studies\, University of Pennsylvania. He received his Bachelor of Arts at the College of William in Mary in Religious Studies and English Literature before going to the University of Chicago\, where he completed a Master of Arts in History of Religions at the Divinity School and a PhD in the History Department. Dr Ali taught South Asian history at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS)\, University of London\, for fourteen years before his arrival at the University of Pennsylvania in 2009. Dr Ali’s research has focused on mentalities and everyday practices in pre-Sultanate South Asia. He has published works on monastic discipline\, mercantile networks\, historical writing and inscriptions\, but his most enduring work has been on the culture of aristocratic society in early medieval India. In 2004 he completed Courtly Culture and Political Life in Early Medieval India (Cambridge)\, the first book-length study to focus exclusively on the development of the royal court as a social and cultural institution in early India. More recently\, Dr Ali has written on various themes related to courtly life\, including the composition of service retinues\, the use of gardens and landscapes\, concepts of gestural and bodily grace\, the formation of everyday ethics through poetic verbal culture\, and changing notions of the body in Sanskrit sex-manuals. His most recent work concerns the history of tellings of the life of king Bhoja in medieval India and a study of Islamic diasporic communities in the Southern Tamil Nadu during the medieval period.\n \nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Caroline Sinders: Intertwined Intimacy
DESCRIPTION:Intertwined Intimacy is a series of architectural sculptures ruminating on privacy and intimacy\, and how the infrastructure of visible and invisible spaces influences communities\, communications\, and safety. \nThis work stems from artist Caroline Sinders&#039\; previous work combining research driven art and human rights analysis that responds to current technology systems by focusing on how the design of &#039\;infrastructural&#039\; and &#039\;architectural&#039\; spaces\, both online and offline\, impacts safety. By focusing on prototypian futures\, Intertwined Intimacy observes impacts through public infrastructure\, and open\, digital commons inspired by mutual aid and open source technology. To generate this research\, Sinders analyzed how structures\, metaphors and engagements of privacy and security within technology impact mental models The sculptures create a labyrinth\, allowing for a space of reflection and consideration for the audience\, as the sculptures slowly become more and more opaque\, offering areas of hidden solitude and refuge.\nCaroline Sinders is the 2023 Roman J. SUMMARY:Performance:1989
DESCRIPTION:1989 is a new\, devised performance that centers on Irina Nistor\, a TV translator in Romania who secretly dubbed thousands of American movies that were censored under the oppressive dictatorship of Nicolae Ceausescu. She voiced every role in the movies — from Sylvestor Stallone in Rocky to Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Gray in Dirty Dancing\, and neighbors and friends would gather illegally to watch the videos behind closed doors. 1989 explores the final months leading up to the 1989 Romanian revolution through the lens of these “video nights” — through the relationships among those who watched the movies and navigated their interactions in the shadow of extreme austerity and authoritarian rule.\n\nPerformers: Isabel Chilian\, Tatiana Cloobeck\, Maia Drone\, Sam Labowitz\, CC Meade\, Ulises Otero\, Ella Saliba\, Jack Weaver Director: Zoe Aja Moore Assistant Director: Tiara Partsch Dramaturgs: Reese Leif\, Carter Van Erp Costume: Jean Nardone Lighting: Taylor Scott

SUMMARY:Performance:Susan Werner
DESCRIPTION:NPR has called Susan Werner \"folk's empress of the unexpected.\" Susan is a triple threat at folk awards ceremonies with her luxuriously smooth and strong voice (she's a former opera singer)\, riveting lyrics\, and haunting melodies. \"When it comes to crafting a song\, Ms. Werner's only peers are Jimmy Webb and Paul Simon\,\" raves No Depression. Susan can do it all! She's a virtuoso on both piano and guitar\, and her recordings have ranged from hardcore folk to Broadway music\, humorous songs\, a skeptical yet sympathetic take on gospel\, songs of farming\, and even classical arrangements of classic rock. Susan has a way of reinventing herself for each new project\, but there's a core of humor\, sophistication\, and musical craft that endures. Susan comes to Michigan with a unique new EP\, “The Birds of Florida.”

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:2023 Dewey Dialogues
DESCRIPTION:The Ginsberg Center’s Dewey Series recognizes the enduring legacy of philosopher and educational reformer John Dewey\, who taught at U of M in the 1890’s and\, later\, went on to found the New School for Social Research. Chief among Dewey’s enduring ideas were that experience is the means through which we come to understand and connect with the world around us and that universal education is the key to democracy.\n\nThis year\, Ginsberg Center\, is collaborating with Matthaei Botanical Gardens & Nichols Arboretum and University of Michigan Museum of Art\, to host a dialogue on the intersection of community\, identity\, public spaces\, and environmental justice. We will also offer additional opportunities to explore MBGNA including garden tours and a scavenger hunt.\n\nWe hope you can join us for a restorative and engaging event!

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Caroline Sinders: Artist Talk and Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Artist Caroline Sinders will present her work and lead a workshop on how design impacts privacy and security\, and will explore ways to rethink how current large technology platforms generate surveillance capitalism that harm users but benefit the companies themselves. These workshops are interactive\, and require no technology. Participants will be led through a series of speculative design exercises\, allowing participants to rethink\, remake\, and reshape technology so it serves them and their communities\, and not just the companies.\nSinders is the 2023 Roman J. Witt Artist in Residence. This annual international competition awards one residency per academic year to a visiting artist/designer who proposes to develop a new work in collaboration with members of the Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design and the University of Michigan community. Learn more about Sinders&#039\; residency and practice in this Q&amp\;A.
