DESCRIPTION:Intertwined Intimacy is a series of architectural sculptures ruminating on privacy and intimacy\, and how the infrastructure of visible and invisible spaces influences communities\, communications\, and safety. \nThis work stems from artist Caroline Sinders&#039\; previous work combining research driven art and human rights analysis that responds to current technology systems by focusing on how the design of &#039\;infrastructural&#039\; and &#039\;architectural&#039\; spaces\, both online and offline\, impacts safety. By focusing on prototypian futures\, Intertwined Intimacy observes impacts through public infrastructure\, and open\, digital commons inspired by mutual aid and open source technology. To generate this research\, Sinders analyzed how structures\, metaphors and engagements of privacy and security within technology impact mental models The sculptures create a labyrinth\, allowing for a space of reflection and consideration for the audience\, as the sculptures slowly become more and more opaque\, offering areas of hidden solitude and refuge.\nCaroline Sinders is the 2023 Roman J. Witt Artist in Residence. This annual international competition awards one residency per academic year to a visiting artist/designer who proposes to develop a new work in collaboration with members of the Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design and the University of Michigan community. She is the founder of human rights and design lab\, Convocation Research + Design. DESCRIPTION:1989 is a new\, devised performance that centers on Irina Nistor\, a TV translator in Romania who secretly dubbed thousands of American movies that were censored under the oppressive dictatorship of Nicolae Ceausescu. DESCRIPTION:Prison Creative Arts Project presents an exhibition of collaborative photography at the Detroit Historical Museum (5401 Woodward Ave. in Detroit)\, open now through May 21st.\n\nA public reception will be held on March 9th\, 6:00–9:00 PM\, with a panel of previous workshop participants at 7:00 PM.\n\nWe hope you will be able to see the exhibit\, and please be in touch if you have any questions.\n\nHumanize the Numbers shows the perspectives of men in Michigan prisons. The prison system regulates every part of an inmate's identity. Instead of using their name\, they are given an ID number. Visiting room photos and mug shots are tightly regulated. Personal info is recorded: height\, weight\, etc. In the process\, their humanity is denied.\n\nThis exhibit at the Detroit Historical Museum reveals the faces and stories of those in prison. It lifts up the voices of those who have been silenced by the criminal legal system. The Humanize the Numbers project gives them a freedom not normally allowed in prison. DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

DESCRIPTION:Intertwined Intimacy is a series of architectural sculptures ruminating on privacy and intimacy\, and how the infrastructure of visible and invisible spaces influences communities\, communications\, and safety. \nThis work stems from artist Caroline Sinders&#039\; previous work combining research driven art and human rights analysis that responds to current technology systems by focusing on how the design of &#039\;infrastructural&#039\; and &#039\;architectural&#039\; spaces\, both online and offline\, impacts safety. By focusing on prototypian futures\, Intertwined Intimacy observes impacts through public infrastructure\, and open\, digital commons inspired by mutual aid and open source technology. To generate this research\, Sinders analyzed how structures\, metaphors and engagements of privacy and security within technology impact mental models The sculptures create a labyrinth\, allowing for a space of reflection and consideration for the audience\, as the sculptures slowly become more and more opaque\, offering areas of hidden solitude and refuge.\nCaroline Sinders is the 2023 Roman J. Witt Artist in Residence. This annual international competition awards one residency per academic year to a visiting artist/designer who proposes to develop a new work in collaboration with members of the Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design and the University of Michigan community. Learn more about Sinders&#039\; residency and practice in this Q&amp\;A.\nSinders is an award winning critical designer\, researcher\, and artist. She is the founder of human rights and design lab\, Convocation Research + Design. For the past few years\, she has been examining the intersections of artificial intelligence\, intersectional justice\, systems design\, harm\, and politics in digital conversational spaces and technology platforms. She has worked with the Tate Exchange at the Tate Modern\, the United Nations\,the European Commission\, Ars Electronica\, the Harvard Kennedy School and others. SUMMARY:Exhibition:CCPS Exhibition. Survivors Saving Survivors: Photographing the Ukrainian Refugee Experience in Poland
DESCRIPTION:In April and June 2022\, at the invitation of JCC Krakow\, Chuck Fishman traveled to Poland to document the JCC and the Jewish community’s commitment to helping Ukrainian refugees fleeing their war-torn country. What he witnessed and captured in a series of gripping photographs is *tikkun olam*\, a central concept in Judaism that denotes activities that repair and improve the world we live in. The exhibit shifts the lens away from the horror the refugees have endured to focus instead on human goodness and how it can overcome lingering evil.\n\nIn his 45-year career\, freelance photographer Chuck Fishman has focused on social and political issues with a strong humanistic concern. His work on Jewish life in Poland\, begun in 1975\, continues to the present day. Fishman’s work has been extensively published\, exhibited\, and collected worldwide\, and has earned him prestigious World Press Photo Foundation medals four times. His photographs have appeared on the covers of *Time*\, *Life*\, *Fortune*\, *Newsweek*\, *The London Sunday Times*\, *The Economist*\, and numerous others. Fishman’s work is included in the collections of the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery\, the United Nations POLIN: The Museum of the History of Polish Jews\, and the Stanford University and New York Public Libraries\, to name a few\, as well as private and corporate collections.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at weisercenter@umich.edu. DESCRIPTION:About the Exhibition\nAs part of the artist's vision for this project\, the installation will be activated on opening night with a collective response to the objects\, the space\, and the archives within. Facilitated by: Ricky Weaver\, Viktor Givens\, Bryce Detroit\, Andrew Wilson\, and Efe Bes.\n\nAbout the Artist\nRicky Weaver is an image-based artist\, theorist\, and mother\, born in Ypsilanti\, MI. Her art and theory are centered around the lexicon generated through black women's everyday practices\, dark sousveillance\, and images as objects that alchemize the archive on a quantum level. She is currently teaching at ArtCenter College of Art and Design in Pasadena\, CA as a fellow for the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design. Weaver is represented by David Klein Gallery and has shown work at Art Miami\, the Havana Biennale\, Sofa Expo\, and more. Her work has been acquired by institutions like the Wedge Collection and published in Aperture’s As We Rise: Photography from the Black Atlantic.\n\nWeaver was named one of LensCulture's Critics Choice Artists of 2020\, selected by Susan Thompson\, associate curator at the Guggenheim Museum. She also participated in the Independent Scholar Fellowship at The Carr Center where she was mentored by Carrie Mae Weems. She earned an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art and a BFA from Eastern Michigan University\, with a concentration in photography. \n\nWeaver recently presented a paper titled “How I Got Over: The Meta-Archive and other registers” at Black Portraitures VII hosted by Rutgers University. Most recently she has taken on the role of lead visual consultant\, specializing in image theory and photography\, for the Global Institute for Black Girls in Film and Media.\n\nThis project is made possible by a grant from the Mellon Foundation as part of the Institute for the Humanities' multi-year High Stakes Art initiative.

DESCRIPTION:Trace how astronomy was developed\, studied\, and disseminated through the centuries\, from 1500 BCE to the Renaissance. On display is material drawn from the University of Michigan collections dealing with the history of early astronomy: manuscripts\, early printed books\, and artifacts illustrating Mesopotamian\, Greek\, Islamic\, and Western European astronomy.\n\nThis exhibit and its permanent online counterpart (https://umlib.us/earlyastronomy) are part of the Aratus Project\, which was sponsored by the National Science Foundation and led by Prof. Francesca Schironi. The core of the project has been to study Aratus’ \"Phaenomena\,\" the most important poem on stars and constellations of the Graeco-Roman ancient world\, and its exegetical tradition. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Portraits of Feminism in Japan
DESCRIPTION:What is feminism in Japan? Rather than imagining it as a singular\, coherent object\, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity\, difference\, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts\, “feminism” in Japan can invoke sharply different associations\, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority\, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters\, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families\, workplaces\, schools\, political institutions\, and laws\, among many other contexts. Many ­– but certainly not all – feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects\, working toward recognition\, repair\, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\n\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Created by nine contemporary artists in Japan and the United States\, the portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of \"feminism\" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences\, needs\, and activism within Japan. This exhibit also spotlights the history of Japanese studies at the University of Michigan in conjunction with the Center for Japanese Studies' 75th anniversary celebration. \n\n“Portraits of Feminism in Japan” is open for viewing M-F 9am-4pm or by appointment. DESCRIPTION:Join 2Fik in conversation with Adi Saleem Bharat for a discussion about deconstructing reified\, oppositional notions of Jewishness and Muslimness through performance art and the possibility of broadening (or queering) our understandings of what it means to be Jewish and Muslim in the twenty-first century. 2Fik is a multidisciplinary artist known for embodying multiple\, unique characters. Through his social and political works\, 2Fik creates lives for characters who almost seem real\, whose stories\, personalities\, and interests are rooted in our world. Each of his creations are conceived in a voyeuristic way that pushes the spectator to wonder what exists beyond the scope of the work. Each character in this humorous and interpretative world becomes a reflection of our society. Québécois by adoption\, French by birth\, and Moroccan by origin\, 2Fik stages his characters much in the manner of a soap opera/reality show\, thus creating a dialogue between reality and fiction that provokes a reflection on our society and our place in it. A pioneer in his field with a nearly twenty-year career\, he masters the art of caricature and encourages the reflection on universality\, equality between men and women\, and the acceptance of oneself as a unique being. DESCRIPTION:Selective Exposure and Partisan Echo Chambers In Television News Consumption: Evidence from Linked Viewership\, Administrative\, and Survey Data\nMonday\, April 10\, 2023 (3:30 PM – 5:00 PM)\n\nJoshua Kalla\nAssistant Professor of Political Science\nYale University\n\nMany scholars doubt that televised partisan media’s audience is large enough\, persuadable enough\, or sufficiently isolated from cross-cutting sources for partisan media to meaningfully influence public opinion. However\, limitations of survey measures of media consumption have left such doubts difficult to assess. We report findings from four novel data sources which each link behavioral measures of television consumption to political administrative and survey data. First\, approximately 1 in 7 Americans consume over 8 hours/month of partisan television\, outnumbering the US Black population. Second\, consistent with selective exposure\, about two-thirds of partisan media viewers are aligned partisans\; however\, partisan media viewers have fairly similar attitudes to partisans generally\, suggesting partisan media’s audience is not likely to be less persuadable than partisans generally. Finally\, few partisan media consumers consume cross-cutting television channels\, consistent with partisan echo chambers. Concerns about partisan media’s potential to further polarize Americans cannot be easily dismissed.\n\nJoshua Kalla is an Assistant Professor of Political Science at Yale University with a secondary appointment in Statistics and Data Science. He received his Ph.D. in political science from the University of California\, Berkeley in 2018. His research studies political persuasion\, prejudice reduction\, and decision-making among voters and political elites\, primarily through the use of randomized field experiments.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Micro vs Macro Labor Supply Elasticities: The Role of Dynamic Compensation
DESCRIPTION:A central and still unresolved tension in economics is the discrepancy between micro and macro elasticities of earnings with respect to marginal tax rates. We revisit this puzzle\, focusing on the role of dynamic returns to effort among top earners. We start by developing a simple theoretical model of earnings responses to taxes in the presence of dynamic returns. In this model\, the returns to effort are delayed and centered around discrete job switches such as promotions within firms or movements between firms. Short-run micro elasticities are attenuated relative to the true long-run macro elasticity. We proceed by providing two main empirical analyses using rich administrative data from Denmark. The first part presents descriptive evidence on earnings and hours-worked patterns over the lifecycle that confirm the predictions of the theoretical model. The second part presents quasi-experimental evidence on earnings responses to taxes using discrete job switches. The empirical strategy is informed by the theoretical model\, according to which job switches can be used to (partially) identify the macro elasticity of labor supply. The evidence shows that\, at the top of the distribution\, macro elasticities are much larger than micro elasticities due to dynamic compensation effects. The normative implications of these findings are analyzed.

SUMMARY:Other:Synthesis and Characterization of Energetic\nMaterials for Explosive and Propellant Applications
DESCRIPTION:The development of high-energy-density materials (HEDMs) with high performance and reasonable sensitivity to impact and friction is an overarching goal in the field of energetic materials. Two areas of interest in our HEDM research are the synthesis of high-energy melt-castable explosives to replace TNT and the synthesis of high-energy propellant plasticizers to replace inert ingredients. Meaningful properties of melt-castable explosives include a melting point range of 70-120 °C\, a low vapor pressure\, a significant difference between the melting temperature and the decomposition temperature\, high density\, low sensitivity\, an affordable synthesis\, and a detonation velocity and detonation pressure that significantly outperforms 2\,4\,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT).\nA plasticizer enhances fluidity or plasticity when added to a rocket or gun propellant formulation. Energetic plasticizers are used to improve physical properties\, to act as a fuel\, and to improve the overall energy yield of a formulation. In designing an optimal plasticizer\, understanding how chemical functional groups affect the melting point\, freezing point\, and decomposition temperature candidate materials becomes imperative. A successful energetic plasticizer must possess a good density\, reasonable sensitivity\, low chemical reactivity\, and high thermal stability as one approaches oxygen-balanced materials.\nPresented will be the synthesis of high-energy melt-castable and propellant plasticizer materials based on strained ring nitroazetidine polynitric ester and cyclobutane polynitric ester materials. In addition\, polynitric ester compounds that maximize densities due to the incorporation of aromatic 1\,2\,4-oxadiazole and furoxan functionalities.\n\nJesse Sabatini

DESCRIPTION:In a 2008 paper\, Fomin\, Shapiro and Thurston constructed a quiver given a triangulated bordered surface. It turns out that the class of quivers arising from this construction gives us almost all the mutation-finite quivers\, only with minor exceptions. In this talk\, we will review the notions of quivers and their mutations. We will then introduce the triangulations of surfaces\, associate to each triangulated surface a quiver and study how flips of triangulation correspond to quiver mutations. We will finally see how quivers from surfaces are involved in the classification of mutation-finite quivers.

DESCRIPTION:“Merry” and “revolt\,” two words rarely seen together in a single sentence\, capture the essence of the spirit required to transform South Korea in the twenty-first century. In this lecture\, Dong-yeon Kim\, the former Minister of Economy and Finance\, former Deputy Prime Minister\, former presidential candidate\, and the sitting governor of the largest province in South Korea\, reflects on his life and public service in a society that discourages questioning\, especially from its young people. In a merry revolt against this tendency\, Governor Kim asks young people to ask three questions of themselves. What is the problem that others have framed for you? What is the problem that you have posed for yourself? Finally\, what is the problem that society at large has raised? By addressing these three questions\, Governor Kim proposes solutions to the structural problems affecting Korean society today while cheering for the courage of young people to “break with the familiar past.

DESCRIPTION:Intertwined Intimacy is a series of architectural sculptures ruminating on privacy and intimacy\, and how the infrastructure of visible and invisible spaces influences communities\, communications\, and safety. \nThis work stems from artist Caroline Sinders&#039\; previous work combining research driven art and human rights analysis that responds to current technology systems by focusing on how the design of &#039\;infrastructural&#039\; and &#039\;architectural&#039\; spaces\, both online and offline\, impacts safety. By focusing on prototypian futures\, Intertwined Intimacy observes impacts through public infrastructure\, and open\, digital commons inspired by mutual aid and open source technology. To generate this research\, Sinders analyzed how structures\, metaphors and engagements of privacy and security within technology impact mental models The sculptures create a labyrinth\, allowing for a space of reflection and consideration for the audience\, as the sculptures slowly become more and more opaque\, offering areas of hidden solitude and refuge.\nCaroline Sinders is the 2023 Roman J. Witt Artist in Residence. This annual international competition awards one residency per academic year to a visiting artist/designer who proposes to develop a new work in collaboration with members of the Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design and the University of Michigan community. Learn more about Sinders&#039\; residency and practice in this Q&amp\;A.\nSinders is an award winning critical designer\, researcher\, and artist. She is the founder of human rights and design lab\, Convocation Research + Design. DESCRIPTION:The annual Cognitive Science Community Colloquium on Cognitive Science\, established in 2017\, is an academic conference geared towards showing off undergraduate research\, connecting cognitive scientists to undergraduates\, and encouraging an interdisciplinary exchange of knowledge among the many fields of cognitive science. We encourage undergraduate students\, graduate students\, faculty\, and the general public to attend\, to gain a better understanding of new developments in cognitive science research.\n__________\n\nHONOR STUDENTS\n\nNumber Absolutism in Everyday and Medical Decision-Making - Anusha Santhapur\nABSTRACT\nPrevious research suggests that individuals vary in their ability to tolerate uncertainty\, but there is a lack of information on how people with a lower tolerance for uncertainty make decisions in uncertain situations. This is especially true for research on physicians’ decision-making\, despite the importance that their diagnoses may have. We hypothesized that people with a lower tolerance cope by using heuristics\, such as the use of arbitrary numerical cutoffs (“Number Absolutism”) to guide decision-making. Participants were given a series of hypothetical scenarios involving numbers in which they would have to make judgments and decisions. For example\, “Kai’s temperature is 95.4F after working outside. People are diagnosed with hypothermia if their temperature is 95.0F or lower. If you were Kai’s doctor\, what is the likelihood you would treat him for hypothermia? How likely do you think it is that the doctor will treat him for hypothermia?” We also measured their Tolerance of Uncertainty and statistical reasoning abilities. In addition\, we examined the role of expertise on use of numerical cutoffs as a heuristic by collecting data from medical students and a non-expert online sample. We found that there were individual differences in how people dealt with uncertainty (i.e.\, how number absolutist they were)\, and that people with better statistical reasoning abilities were less likely to rely on arbitrary numerical cut offs when making hypothetical decisions.\n\nEvaluating the Benefits of Verbal Working Memory Training in Individuals with Mild Cognitive Impairment - Hattie Benedetti \nABSTRACT\nWorking memory (WM) is a fundamental cognitive capacity that declines with age\, and this decline is further exacerbated in older adults (OA) with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Recent evidence suggests that training improves WM performance in healthy OA.  However\, it is unclear whether similar effects are observed in individuals with MCI. In the present study\, participants with amnestic-MCI (aMCI) completed a ten-day WM training program and additional neuropsychological (NP) tasks. During each training session\, participants completed six rounds of an adaptive verbal WM task where the number of letters to be remembered (i.e.\, set size) increases with improving performance. NP tasks were administered once before the WM training program and once after. We predicted that training gains resulting from the WM training task would be evident\, and indicated by a significant increase in mean set size achieved from session 1 to session 10. Supporting this prediction\, a large effect size for the aMCI group revealed significant WM performance improvements on the WM training task after ten consecutive training sessions. Cognitive training also has the potential to generate gains in additional cognitive domains\, and this effect is known as “transfer”. The present study measured transfer effects as correlations between WM training gains and the difference in post- vs. pre- training NP scores. Our results suggest that the adaptive cognitive training program was beneficial in improving WM performance for individuals with aMCI\, but there were limited findings of transfer effects in this population. Investigating the real-world benefits of cognitive training in OA diagnosed with cognitive impairment is important to assess the ecological impacts resulting from training programs.\n\nCSC MEMBERS:\n\nFood Insecurity\, Nutrition\, and Cognition - Adria Shines\, Myles WIlliamson\, Karl Mody El Din\nABSTRACT\nWe examine the effects of food insecurity on various cognitive measures including performance on cognitive tasks\, mood\, and diseases associated with cognitive decline such as Alzheimers and dementia. We also touch on the role of specific nutrients on cognitive performance and brain health. We conclude by discussing initiatives trying to combat the detrimental effects of food insecurity and inadequate nutrition on well-being and offer our audience steps to help both others and themselves with these challenges.\n\nMental Health Made Easier - Henry Barron\, Cole Nogawa\, Lejla Pargan\, Michelle Wu \nABSTRACT\nThe University of Michigan offers psychological services to all students\, free of charge\, through CAPS- Counseling And Psychological Services. The mission of CAPS\, however\, is limited to short-term treatment. Many students express frustration and confusion about seeking further help after exhausting the standard five sessions offered. Therefore\, we set out to bridge the gap between CAPS and long-term mental health care by creating and promoting an online informational resource to help University students navigate the insurance industry and find practicing professionals in the immediate Ann Arbor area.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:CCPS Exhibition. Survivors Saving Survivors: Photographing the Ukrainian Refugee Experience in Poland
DESCRIPTION:In April and June 2022\, at the invitation of JCC Krakow\, Chuck Fishman traveled to Poland to document the JCC and the Jewish community’s commitment to helping Ukrainian refugees fleeing their war-torn country. What he witnessed and captured in a series of gripping photographs is *tikkun olam*\, a central concept in Judaism that denotes activities that repair and improve the world we live in. The exhibit shifts the lens away from the horror the refugees have endured to focus instead on human goodness and how it can overcome lingering evil.\n\nIn his 45-year career\, freelance photographer Chuck Fishman has focused on social and political issues with a strong humanistic concern. His work on Jewish life in Poland\, begun in 1975\, continues to the present day. Fishman’s work has been extensively published\, exhibited\, and collected worldwide\, and has earned him prestigious World Press Photo Foundation medals four times. His photographs have appeared on the covers of *Time*\, *Life*\, *Fortune*\, *Newsweek*\, *The London Sunday Times*\, *The Economist*\, and numerous others. Fishman’s work is included in the collections of the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery\, the United Nations POLIN: The Museum of the History of Polish Jews\, and the Stanford University and New York Public Libraries\, to name a few\, as well as private and corporate collections.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at weisercenter@umich.edu. DESCRIPTION:About the Exhibition\nAs part of the artist's vision for this project\, the installation will be activated on opening night with a collective response to the objects\, the space\, and the archives within. Facilitated by: Ricky Weaver\, Viktor Givens\, Bryce Detroit\, Andrew Wilson\, and Efe Bes.\n\nAbout the Artist\nRicky Weaver is an image-based artist\, theorist\, and mother\, born in Ypsilanti\, MI. Her art and theory are centered around the lexicon generated through black women's everyday practices\, dark sousveillance\, and images as objects that alchemize the archive on a quantum level. She is currently teaching at ArtCenter College of Art and Design in Pasadena\, CA as a fellow for the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design. Weaver is represented by David Klein Gallery and has shown work at Art Miami\, the Havana Biennale\, Sofa Expo\, and more. Her work has been acquired by institutions like the Wedge Collection and published in Aperture’s As We Rise: Photography from the Black Atlantic.\n\nWeaver was named one of LensCulture's Critics Choice Artists of 2020\, selected by Susan Thompson\, associate curator at the Guggenheim Museum. She also participated in the Independent Scholar Fellowship at The Carr Center where she was mentored by Carrie Mae Weems. She earned an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art and a BFA from Eastern Michigan University\, with a concentration in photography. \n\nWeaver recently presented a paper titled “How I Got Over: The Meta-Archive and other registers” at Black Portraitures VII hosted by Rutgers University. Most recently she has taken on the role of lead visual consultant\, specializing in image theory and photography\, for the Global Institute for Black Girls in Film and Media.\n\nThis project is made possible by a grant from the Mellon Foundation as part of the Institute for the Humanities' multi-year High Stakes Art initiative.

DESCRIPTION:Trace how astronomy was developed\, studied\, and disseminated through the centuries\, from 1500 BCE to the Renaissance. On display is material drawn from the University of Michigan collections dealing with the history of early astronomy: manuscripts\, early printed books\, and artifacts illustrating Mesopotamian\, Greek\, Islamic\, and Western European astronomy.\n\nThis exhibit and its permanent online counterpart (https://umlib.us/earlyastronomy) are part of the Aratus Project\, which was sponsored by the National Science Foundation and led by Prof. Francesca Schironi. The core of the project has been to study Aratus’ \"Phaenomena\,\" the most important poem on stars and constellations of the Graeco-Roman ancient world\, and its exegetical tradition. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Portraits of Feminism in Japan
DESCRIPTION:What is feminism in Japan? Rather than imagining it as a singular\, coherent object\, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity\, difference\, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts\, “feminism” in Japan can invoke sharply different associations\, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority\, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters\, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families\, workplaces\, schools\, political institutions\, and laws\, among many other contexts. Many ­– but certainly not all – feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects\, working toward recognition\, repair\, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\n\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Created by nine contemporary artists in Japan and the United States\, the portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of \"feminism\" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences\, needs\, and activism within Japan. DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Self-organized complex structures in nature\, from hierarchical biopolymers to viral capsids and organisms\, offer efficiency\, adaptability\, robustness\, and multifunctionality.  How are these structures assembled? Can we understand the fundamental principles behind their formation\, and assemble similar structures in the lab using simple inorganic building blocks?  What’s the purpose of these complex structures in nature\, and can we utilize similar mechanisms to program new functions in metamaterials?  In this talk\, we will start from the perspective of geometric frustration\, to explore answers to these questions.  I will discuss our recent work on developing analytic theories based on crystal structures in non-Euclidean space for the self-assembly of nanoparticles into complex structures\, mechanical properties of materials in which geometric frustration causes prestress\, as well as our ongoing effort in designing topological mechanical metamaterials with and without geometric frustration.\n\nSnacks and coffee will be served. DESCRIPTION:Our group’s central goal is to discover new concepts in base-promoted reactivity as a means to advance synthetic chemistry. For example\, while base-promoted reactions typically accomplish redox neutral transformations\, such as the addition of pronucleophiles to electrophiles\, we have identified general strategies for base-promoted oxidative and reductive coupling reactions. This talk will discuss the development of these strategies in the context of two methods: the oxidative coupling of arenes with nucleophiles and the reductive defluorinative coupling of trifluoromethylarenes with electrophiles. DESCRIPTION:The discovery of Denisovans is one of the most exciting findings in human evolution in the past decade. The striking similarity between sequences of the high-altitude adaptation gene EPAS1 in modern Tibetans and Denisovans suggested adaptive introgression. However\, the time and geographic ranges where the adaptive introgression happened remain unknown. This talk consists of three studies that are related to archaic adaptive introgression. First\, I show that modern Tibetans experienced two pulses of Denisovan introgression\, among which a group more alike the Denisovans from the Altai mountains introduced the adaptive EPAS1 haplotype\, and the positive selection on EPAS1 did not start until well-after the Last Glacial Maximum. Second\, resolving the timeline of Denisovan adaptive introgression spurred an opportunity to reexamine Tibetan population history\, which remains perplexing after decades of work. By leveraging genetic and archaeological evidence\, I show that there are two possible models for the population history on Tibetan Plateau. Lastly\, I introduce MaLAdapt – a machine learning method for detecting genome-wide adaptive introgression\, which reveals novel knowledge of how genomic variants from archaic humans facilitated modern human adaptations in worldwide populations.

DESCRIPTION:If you would like to attend via Zoom\, please register at https://myumi.ch/4rn9E\n\nThrough close examination of case studies\, this talk will explore how serious criminal cases were adjudicated and reviewed\, how the Qing imperial government’s Confucian ideal and ideology of justice were constructed and sustained\, and for those purposes\, how judicial archives were created and curated in late imperial China. It will demonstrate the dynamics\, tensions\, and complexities in the imperial governance and judicial administration of Qing China (1644-1911).\n   \n   Li Chen is currently Associate Professor of Chinese History and Law at the Department of History and the Faculty of Law at the University of Toronto in Canada. He received his PhD in Chinese history from Columbia University and JD from the University of Illinois (UIUC). His research focuses on the intersections of law\, politics\, and culture in both Chinese and international history since the early 16th century. Besides other publications including two edited volumes and a forthcoming Chinese book\, his first English monograph\, \"Chinese Law in Imperial Eyes: Sovereignty\, Justice\, and Transcultural Politics\" (Columbia University Press\, 2016)\, received the honorable mention for the Peter Gonville Stein Book Prize of the American Society for Legal History in 2017 and received the Joseph Levenson Book Prize for Chinese studies from the Association for Asian Studies in 2018. He has since been working on several book projects on late imperial Chinese legal culture and judicial practices.

DESCRIPTION:We investigate the competitive effects of spot-price contracting\, in which a buyer and seller contract to transact at a future date at the price prevailing in that market (the “spot price”) at that future date\; such contracts are ubiquitous in the beef-processing industry. We show that spot-price contracting can facilitate collusion: When such contracts are available\, firms can maintain monopsonistic prices at much lower market concentrations than in standard models of Bertrand competition\, and some degree of non-competitive pricing can be maintained for any market concentration. We also show that the effect of differentiation on collusion in this setting is ambiguous: Monopsonistic pricing is most easily maintained at either high or low levels of differentiation\, while more competitive pricing arises at intermediate levels of differentiation.

This panel of Indigenous language rights scholars and activists will discuss the rights to “use\, revitalize\, and transmit their languages\,” rights articulated and protected by the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. \n\nDiego A. Tituaña\, a Kichwa Otavalo from Ecuador\, is a diplomat of the Ecuadorian Foreign Service. He has multilateral experience in human rights\, disarmament\, and migration issues. Diego is currently serving as Deputy Chief of Mission at the Ecuador Embassy in Santo Domingo\, Dominican Republic. From 2020 to 2022\, in his capacity as head of the Technical Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the province of Imbabura\, he oversaw human mobility and foreign policy issues in the northern border area. In 2014\, Diego became the first indigenous career diplomat that was appointed at the Permanent Mission to the United Nations. From 2014 to 2019\, he was the facilitator of the United Nations Resolution on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. Under his leadership\, the United Nations started two important actions for the indigenous peoples: the process of enhancing their participation at the United Nations and the Proclamation of 2019 as the International Year of Indigenous Languages. Diego is a 2019 Yale Maurice R. Greenberg World Fellow and 2021 Draper Hills Summer Fellow from Stanford University. He holds a master’s degree in International Relations and Diplomacy from Instituto de Altos Estudios Nacionales\, and a BA in International Relations from Universidad San Francisco de Quito\, Ecuador. In addition\, he is a PHD candidate in Advanced Studies in Human Rights at the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid.\n\nKristen Carpenter is Council Tree Professor of Law and Director of the American Indian Law Program at the University of Colorado Law School. Professor Carpenter served as chair and member of the United Nations Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (EMRIP) from 2017-2021. While serving at the United Nations\, Professor Carpenter worked on human rights issues regarding Indigenous Peoples throughout the world. With colleagues at the Native American Rights Fund\, Carpenter is now co-lead on The Implementation Project an effort to advance the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in the United States. She also serves as a Justice of the Shawnee Tribe Supreme Court.\n\nAleksei Tsykarev serves as chair of the Center for Support of Indigenous Peoples and Civic Diplomacy «Young Karelia»\, an NGO recognized with special consultative status by the United Nations Economic and Social Council. A lifetime activist for the rights of indigenous peoples in Russia\, Tsykarev previously led the International Youth Association of Finno-Ugric Peoples\, and has served as an independent expert in several United Nations capacities. Tsykarev is a former Member and Chairperson-Rapporteur of the United Nations Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples\, a subsidiary body of the UN Human Rights Council. He also served on the International Steering Committee for the UN’s 2019 International Year of Indigenous Languages\, led by UNESCO. Tsykarev holds a Master of Linguistics from Petrozavodsk State University\, in Russia\, and his academic publications focus on indigenous peoples’ rights\, particularly in the areas of language and culture. In Spring 2019\, he was a Visiting Scholar at the University of Colorado in the United States. Most recently\, Tsykarev was appointed by the United Nations Economic and Social Council to serve as Member of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues for a three-year term starting on 1 January\, 2020. Tsykarev advises global institutions\, including the World Bank\, as well as think tanks and scientific organizations\, regarding indigenous peoples’ rights. He has been active in a range of indigenous organizations\, and has participated in regional and international forums\, including the World Conference on Indigenous Issues\, World Conference on Youth\, the World Congress of Finno-Ugric Peoples\, and the Global Indigenous Youth Caucus. Tsykarev has coordinated a number of international projects in the sphere of human rights\, culture\, and civic diplomacy\, and serves on advisory councils to government ministries and offices. Tsykarev lectures on indigenous peoples and human rights at universities around the world\, as well as in various bodies of the United Nations.\n\nMatthew L.M. Fletcher is the Harry Burns Hutchins Collegiate Professor of Law at the University of Michigan Law School. He teaches and writes in the areas of Federal Indian Law\, American Indian Tribal Law\, Anishinaabe legal and political philosophy\, constitutional law\, federal courts\, and legal ethics. He sits as the Chief Justice of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians\, the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians\, and the Poarch Band of Creek Indians. He also sits as an appellate judge for several other tribal nations. He is a member of the Grand Traverse Band. Professor Fletcher graduated from the University of Michigan Law School in 1997 and the University of Michigan in 1994. He is married to Wenona Singel\, a member of the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians\, and they have two sons\, Owen and Emmett.

DESCRIPTION:Title: Arterial Spin Labeling in Neurovascular Imaging: Beyond CBF\n\nAbstract: Arterial spin labeling (ASL) is a non-invasive MRI technique for measuring cerebral blood flow. Over the past three decades\, ASL has undergone rapid technical development\, which promotes ASL to become a useful imaging tool for brain perfusion measurement. Except for ASL perfusion imaging\, additional physiological information can be derived using ASL during the passage of labeled blood through the cerebral arterial trees into capillaries and tissue\, such as dynamic MR angiography\, vascular territorial mapping\, and other hemodynamic parameter quantification\, all of which could also provide useful information in neurovascular applications. SUMMARY:Other:Investigating Nanostructure Synthesis Using In Situ TEM
DESCRIPTION:Understanding the fundamental relationship between atomic structure and material properties is the holy grail of materials sciences. Towards this goal we are working to develop a real-time and atomistic understanding of the mechanistic steps taken during the growth and transformation of crystalline materials. To do this we employ a combination of complementary synthetic and characterization approaches\, in particular using in situ ultra-high resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to observe key structural transformations in real-time. Our in situ experiments include directly performing nanomaterial synthesis in the TEM\, as well as determining the kinetics of structural phase transformations of as-synthesized inorganic nanocrystals. Further\, based on an unexpected observation made during one of these in situ measurements\, we have developed a new approach to directly synthesize arrays of crystallographically well-defined nanoscale interfaces. Several examples will be presented to illustrate our approach\, including: the real-time observation of the solid-state synthesis of an individual nanocapsule\; a post-synthetic structural phase transformation within an individual nanorod\; and finally\, the creation of new nanostructured architectures using liquid metal nanodroplets.                                             \nBeth Guiton (University of Kentucky)

DESCRIPTION:In an era of digital life and nonstop photo-sharing\, the modes of “portrait” and “landscape” are increasingly naturalized as orientations to the worlds we encounter.  Yet both have long\, complex histories as visual genres that continue\, mostly unremarked\, to shape our habits of seeing.  Reconsidering those histories has been an important project for U.S. photographers who seek to use the camera as a resource for anti-racist imaging\, potentially transforming the role of photography itself in representing and reproducing power\, difference\, and the right to look.  This talk\, drawn from a project on prehistories of digital imaging\, focuses on mid-20th-century photographer Gordon Parks and a recently rediscovered body of his work made in the Jim Crow South. DESCRIPTION:Intertwined Intimacy is a series of architectural sculptures ruminating on privacy and intimacy\, and how the infrastructure of visible and invisible spaces influences communities\, communications\, and safety. \nThis work stems from artist Caroline Sinders&#039\; previous work combining research driven art and human rights analysis that responds to current technology systems by focusing on how the design of &#039\;infrastructural&#039\; and &#039\;architectural&#039\; spaces\, both online and offline\, impacts safety. By focusing on prototypian futures\, Intertwined Intimacy observes impacts through public infrastructure\, and open\, digital commons inspired by mutual aid and open source technology. To generate this research\, Sinders analyzed how structures\, metaphors and engagements of privacy and security within technology impact mental models The sculptures create a labyrinth\, allowing for a space of reflection and consideration for the audience\, as the sculptures slowly become more and more opaque\, offering areas of hidden solitude and refuge.\nCaroline Sinders is the 2023 Roman J. Witt Artist in Residence. This annual international competition awards one residency per academic year to a visiting artist/designer who proposes to develop a new work in collaboration with members of the Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design and the University of Michigan community. Learn more about Sinders&#039\; residency and practice in this Q&amp\;A.\nSinders is an award winning critical designer\, researcher\, and artist. She is the founder of human rights and design lab\, Convocation Research + Design. For the past few years\, she has been examining the intersections of artificial intelligence\, intersectional justice\, systems design\, harm\, and politics in digital conversational spaces and technology platforms. She has worked with the Tate Exchange at the Tate Modern\, the United Nations\,the European Commission\, Ars Electronica\, the Harvard Kennedy School and others. Dinner will also be served so participants can engage in an Iftar together with the students who are fasting for Ramadan!Amanda Adhami - Amanda is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who works with adults and adolescents that struggle with issues of mental health and substance use. She received her Master’s in social work from IUPUI School of Social Work\, with a concentration in Mental Health and Addictions\, and her bachelor’s in social work from Indiana University Bloomington (IUB). She began working in the addiction field as an intern and has over 8 years of experience working with adults and adolescents from diverse backgrounds. Amanda has experience working as a school counselor\, and she continues to work as an adjunct instructor at IUB teaching substance use and diversity courses at the Bachelor and Master level. Amanda received extensive training in treating gambling addictions and is a Certified International Co-Occurring Gambling Specialist. She holds certificates in Dialectal Behavioral Therapy and utilizes this as well as other evidence-based practices (including Trauma-Focused Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy\, Motivational Interviewing and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) to help individuals achieve their goals and live healthier lives. Amanda is passionate about community service\, social justice\, building interfaith connections\, and serving at her Mosque. Sara Alazemi - Sara is a Master's student in Social Work at the IUPUI School of Social Work\, with a concentration in Community Development (Leadership)\, graduating in May 2023. She will join the PhD program in Fall 2023 at IUSSW. She has a Bachelor's degree in Social Work from Kuwait University. She also obtained a Master's degree in Clinical Social Work from Kuwait University\, and her master's thesis was on social factors of deviant behavior among high school students in Kuwait. Sara has experience as a school social worker\, for nine years\, before going to complete her postgraduate studies at Kuwait University. She has experience in academic teaching at Kuwait University in teaching bachelor's level students. Also\, She has worked in the addiction field as an intern at the addiction treatment center in Kuwait. In addition\, she had experience counseling adolescents and families in a private counseling center in Kuwait. Currently\, Sara plans to complete her postgraduate studies in the United States after obtaining a scholarship from Kuwait University to study for a master's and PhD there. Then\, she will be appointed as a university teacher at Kuwait University\, College of Social Sciences\, Department of Social Work.
