Along the way you’ll stop at the Moon and individual planets\, then you’ll make the jump to light speed and head to interstellar space and see all the galaxies in the universe. \n\nThis event is part of the Observatory's Saturday open house programming. Join us 12-11 pm and tour the historic building\, view our exhibits\, and participate in hands-on astronomy activities. And if weather permits\, you'll be able to view the sun with our solar telescope and the night sky with historic and modern telescopes. Families welcome\, admission is always free\, and registration is not required.\n\nDean Regas is a renowned public speaker\, author\, educator\, national popularizer of astronomy\, and an expert in observational astronomy. He served as the astronomer for the Cincinnati Observatory from 2000-2023 and was the astronomer in residence at the Grand Canyon in 2021.  He is the author of seven books including “All About Orion\,” “100 Things to See in the Night Sky” and “How to Teach Grown-Ups About Pluto.” From 2010-2019 he was the co-host of the PBS program Star Gazers\, and he has contributed to Astronomy Magazine\, Sky and Telescope Magazine\, Farmer's Almanac\, USAToday\, Science Friday and Here & Now.  He is also the host of a popular astronomy podcast \"Looking Up with Dean Regas.\"

In this family-friendly presentation based on his book of the same name\, astronomer Dean Regas will demonstrate the basic tips and tricks to identifying stars\, constellations\, planets\, and more in the night sky. You'll soon be on your way to finding 100 Things in the Night Sky. \n\nThis event is part of the Observatory's Saturday open house programming. Join us 12-11 pm and tour the historic building\, view our exhibits\, and participate in hands-on astronomy activities. And if weather permits\, you'll be able to view the sun with our solar telescope and the night sky with historic and modern telescopes. Families welcome\, admission is always free\, and registration is not required.\n\nDean Regas is a renowned public speaker\, author\, educator\, national popularizer of astronomy\, and an expert in observational astronomy. He served as the astronomer for the Cincinnati Observatory from 2000-2023 and was the astronomer in residence at the Grand Canyon in 2021. He is the author of seven books including “All About Orion\,” “100 Things to See in the Night Sky” and “How to Teach Grown-Ups About Pluto.” From 2010-2019 he was the co-host of the PBS program Star Gazers\, and he has contributed to Astronomy Magazine\, Sky and Telescope Magazine\, Farmer's Almanac\, USAToday\, Science Friday and Here & Now. He is also the host of a popular astronomy podcast \"Looking Up with Dean Regas.\"

This theatrical work is set in a jazz bar\, where one’s intimate moments become deceptively public\, and where trying to forget may not be enough. \n\nDrawing from family dynamics\, sisterhood\, and early experiences of navigating unfamiliar emotions\, *Strangers Again* (Snow) examines how people carry\, suppress\, or redirect feelings\, and how those patterns manifest in the physical body. The dancers move through states of physical closeness and emotional distance\, tracing cycles of withdrawal\, fatigue\, and collective support. \n\n「三⾯鏡」*Sanmenkyou* (Brooks) is a triptych following three relational “faces”: the face shown to self\, the one to society\, and the face presented to the world through digital platforms\; where authenticity\, performance\, and global visibility coexist. Fundamentally based on the Japanese concepts of *honne* (true feelings) and *tatemae* (public façade)\, the conditions this describes are familiar to many multi-ethnic individuals navigating multiple cultural frameworks. \n\n*El Final* (Orduna) is rooted in the intensity of pivotal moments shaped by closure. The work explores the end of a chapter as it unfolds with heightened emotion and deep nostalgia. Through climactic\, tango-like scores and orchestral textures\, the dance’s journey traces the arc of longing and finality. Impermanence is the catalyst to growth\, unveiling the possibilities within every conclusion. \n\n*Ephemeral River* (Shahpurwala) explores the joy and silly little feeling dance brings when experienced onstage. Inviting the audience into a vibrant world shaped by play and genuine enjoyment\, the piece celebrates dance as a space for freedom\, humor\, and shared pleasure. DESCRIPTION:A wise wizard once said: “when in doubt\, always follow your nose.” \n\nThe last album from Penny and Sparrow\, Olly Olly\, was a work of revelation and liberation. A search for and an embrace of the self. I imagine they were left with a headscratcher of a question: well\, shit. Where do you go from there?\n\nFortunately\, they listened to the wizard and followed their noses backwards to find their way forward. \n\nAiming to strip away pretense and invite experimentation\, they commandeered a garden shed from a friend and retrofitted it to make a twenty-track album that is vast\, weird\, and wholly unexpected. \n\nIf Lefty is anything\, it is the journal of Penny and Sparrow’s inner child. Dog-eared\, lock busted open. On its pages the sketches of dreams\, nightmares\, erotica\, and literary fan fiction graffiti the margins of poetry\, elegies\, and love letters in the wild colors of saxophone blue\, electronic pink\, and blood harmony red. \n\nBeautifully varied and richly rendered\, it is an album that wanders from theme to theme\, style to style\, exultation to tragedy. Yet it is never lost. In the wake of a toppled galactic dictator\, freeform chaos has taken hold of the galaxy\, as various factions fight for control of the freshly liberated Multiverse. In the wake of the disappearance of Prime Minister Glorianna\, The United Federation of Female Freedom Fighters have sent Captain Galatia 9 and her crew aboard the Harpy to instate Erotica Ann\, their science officer\, as Prime Minister in her absence\, in order to stop a Civil War on Glorianna’s home planet. However\, the Harpy stumbles across another ship\, Siren 3– captained by Verloona Ti\, Galatia’s lifelong nemesis— cultivating a sinister plot involving Glorianna’s disappearance. SUMMARY:Exhibition:'Redefining the Crown' Art Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:\"Artist’s statement: For centuries\, hair has been critical to how human beings understand racial categories\, gender designations\, and class status. For Black women in particular\, hair has and continues to be tied to ethnic identity and a history of self-determination\, social justice\, and survival. Thus\, chemotherapy-induced hair loss is a devastating event for Black patients who are also more likely to be diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer subtypes necessitating chemotherapy\, carrying a 40% increased risk of dying from breast cancer.\n\nRedefining the ‘crown’: Approaching chemotherapy-induced alopecia among Black patients with breast cancer” started as a manuscript published in the scientific journal Cancer. But the work could not stop there. “Redefining the Crown” then metamorphosed into a photo essay project aimed at exploring the breast cancer journeys of six Black women and their experiences with hair loss due to chemotherapy. Though the project centers the experience of Black women\, we also acknowledge that breast cancer and chemotherapy-induced alopecia impact individuals of all genders. While the goal is to illuminate the unique stories of Black women who are affected uncommonly by this common disease\, the project is also a call to action regarding the disproportionate breast cancer-related mortality facing Black communities.\n\nIn this portraiture series\, photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks. This exhibition examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy and how their sense of cultural pride and personal identity have been redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThese survivors have redefined their own crowns. More profound than the new hairstyles they don after hair loss are the invisible crowns that they choose to wear each day: gratitude\, faith\, and resilience. What do their words mean to you? Drawn from the archives of Project Save\, these photographs capture different valences of American life\, as experienced\, performed\, and imagined by Armenian immigrants. From naturalization classes to festivals of nations\, from breaking new ground for churches to mundane tableaus of Thanksgiving and Christmas\, this range of photographs offers a glimpse of a community in the making\, one that sought to preserve a memory of its Ottoman past even while anticipating an American future.

DESCRIPTION:View a diverse array of artifacts which were created to communicate with and call upon various unseen\, supernatural forces for aid and protection. While the objects on display are disparate at first glance\, ranging from lead tablets and amulets to papyrus and parchment leaves\, they all share a common thread: they have long been labeled as \"magical\" in traditional Western scholarship.\n\nHowever\, each of these artifacts is better understood on a broad spectrum of ancient ritual\, from subversive and transgressive acts to highly social and visible ones. The exhibit highlights the objects’ oft-overlooked material dimensions\, asking us to consider how qualities like color\, texture\, and weight shaped an object’s perceived efficacy and meaning. \n\nThis exhibit was a collaboration\, and displays items from several University of Michigan units: the library’s Special Collections Research Center and Papyrology Collection\, the Museum of Natural History\, and the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology. It also asks visitors to ponder their own attitudes and experiences\, and to submit memories and photos of their time working\, studying\, volunteering or receiving care at U-M's medical campus and beyond. The people of Storyn\, the NON PLAY-ER Chosen or NPC for short\, wait breathlessly for that day. \n\nWhen the heroes do arrive\, Tem — as the book professes — must guide them on their journey. However\, nothing can prepare Tem for what their chosen warriors truly are: a group unlike anything written down in their book. As the lines between what is “good” and “evil” begin to blur\, Tem grapples with the fact that maybe not everything is as black and white as their sacred book makes it out to be.

DESCRIPTION:“Gorka is widely heralded for the sophisticated intelligence and provocative originality of his songs.” –The Boston Globe\n\nJohn Gorka is one of the most well-loved singer/songwriters in the folk community. With a career spanning 40 years and a discography of 17 solo releases\, he embodies the best of folk music with his eclectic blend of folk\, blues and bluegrass influences\, insightful lyrics and engaging delivery. John’s career was launched in the mid-80s when he won the prestigious New Folk award at the Kerrville Folk Festival in 1984. \n\nSeveral years later he signed to Red House records for the release of his debut album I Know. He migrated to Windham Hill/High Street for his subsequent three releases\, earning extensive critical acclaim from a variety of publications including Rolling Stone which dubbed him the preeminent male singer-songwriter of the New Folk Movement. He returned to Red House in 1998 and has since released a string of albums that have achieved folk chart-topping success.\n\nHailing from New Jersey\, but forged in the Greenwich Village Fast Folk scene\, John has honed his craft and persona into an unmistakable image. The shy\, wry\, insightful\, and yes\, sensitive singer-songwriter has been copied and parodied. But the old coat he wove still fits\, and still suits him well. The old songs ring as true as they ever did\, and the new ones are just as good.

DESCRIPTION:\"Artist’s statement: For centuries\, hair has been critical to how human beings understand racial categories\, gender designations\, and class status. For Black women in particular\, hair has and continues to be tied to ethnic identity and a history of self-determination\, social justice\, and survival. Thus\, chemotherapy-induced hair loss is a devastating event for Black patients who are also more likely to be diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer subtypes necessitating chemotherapy\, carrying a 40% increased risk of dying from breast cancer.\n\nRedefining the ‘crown’: Approaching chemotherapy-induced alopecia among Black patients with breast cancer” started as a manuscript published in the scientific journal Cancer. But the work could not stop there. “Redefining the Crown” then metamorphosed into a photo essay project aimed at exploring the breast cancer journeys of six Black women and their experiences with hair loss due to chemotherapy. Though the project centers the experience of Black women\, we also acknowledge that breast cancer and chemotherapy-induced alopecia impact individuals of all genders. While the goal is to illuminate the unique stories of Black women who are affected uncommonly by this common disease\, the project is also a call to action regarding the disproportionate breast cancer-related mortality facing Black communities.\n\nIn this portraiture series\, photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks. This exhibition examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy and how their sense of cultural pride and personal identity have been redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThese survivors have redefined their own crowns. More profound than the new hairstyles they don after hair loss are the invisible crowns that they choose to wear each day: gratitude\, faith\, and resilience. What do their words mean to you? Drawn from the archives of Project Save\, these photographs capture different valences of American life\, as experienced\, performed\, and imagined by Armenian immigrants. From naturalization classes to festivals of nations\, from breaking new ground for churches to mundane tableaus of Thanksgiving and Christmas\, this range of photographs offers a glimpse of a community in the making\, one that sought to preserve a memory of its Ottoman past even while anticipating an American future.

DESCRIPTION:Iranian-American artist Sheida Soleimani explores themes of migration\, political exile\, queerness\, and environmental crisis through the wildly imaginative and intricate scenarios she first stages in her studio. The tableaus—which often include live animals\, props\, even her parents—are then photographed\, documenting the artist’s process. Each photograph becomes a part of Soleimani’s rich visual storytelling.      \n\n*Flyways *presents a series of new photographs that include images evocative of her family’s history and migration story in juxtaposition with images of injured birds that are representative of Soleimani’s work as a wildlife rehabilitator. (In 2018\, Soleimani founded Congress of Birds\, a wild bird rehabilitation center in Rhode Island.) The change in her practice to include bird rescue results in a revolutionary body of work steeped in passion and articulated in a completely original visual language. DESCRIPTION:Lynn Galbreath\, a Detroit based artist who grew up in Argentina\, is a former recipient of the Creative Artists’ Grant from the Arts Foundation of Michigan and the Michigan Individual Artist Grant from Michigan Council For The Arts. Galbreath’s work has been showcased locally\, nationally and internationally in over 20 solo/two person and over 100 group exhibitions.\n\nGalbreath has an M.F.A. from the James Pearson Duffy Department of Art\, Art History\, & Design\, Wayne State University\, Detroit\, MI\; and a B.F.A. with Permanent K-12 Certification from The Gwen Frostic School of Art\, Western MI University\, Kalamazoo\, MI. Galbreath has chaperoned eleven intensive\, immersive art experiences to Italy\, Spain\, France\, Belgium\, England\, Germany\, the Netherlands\, Austria\, and the Czech Republic. Lynn is a retired Adjunct Associate Professor of Studio Art from Oakland University\, where she has been on the faculty of the Department of Art & Art History since 2000. Lynn has also instructed studio art and design at the College For Creative Studies\, University of Detroit Mercy — School of Architecture\, Macomb Community College\, Wayne State University\, and Bloomfield University School. Her work can be seen in the collections of Oakland University\, Wayne State University\, Detroit Receiving Hospital\, Children’s Hospital of Michigan\, Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital and numerous private collections.\n\nThis exhibition consists of works from a variety of series created by Galbreath over the years: Telegraph\, Storyboard\, and Working Hard for a Living. Each series represents a unique exploration of themes\, techniques\, and social commentaries that reflect Galbreath’s artistic journey and concerns for the world.\n\nTelegraph explores the aesthetic visual weights and balances between harmony and content\, diving deep into how visual elements can convey messages and emotions. This series invites viewers to reflect on the way art communicates through its formal qualities\, as well as its narrative possibilities. The careful interplay of shapes\, colors\, and textures in these works prompts an examination of the viewer's perception and emotional response. By utilizing abstract forms\, Galbreath encourages an engagement that goes beyond mere observation\, seeking to provoke thought about how aesthetic choices influence understanding and meaning.\n\nOn the other hand\, Storyboard is a series of image-driven installation paintings that vary greatly in size\, showcasing Galbreath’s versatility and creative ingenuity. The titles of the works draw inspiration from the years spent creating visuals for TV commercials and public service announcements\, illustrating how commercial art often intertwines with societal messages. This series emphasizes the profound impact visual narratives have on consumer culture and public perception\, underscoring the artist's belief in the potency of imagery to shape narratives. The installations weave a complex fabric of storytelling that challenges viewers to reconsider their relationship with media and the messages they consume daily.\n\nWorking Hard for a Living pays tribute to our sustainable and unsustainable resources\, shedding light on the individuals who toil diligently within these economic frameworks. This series highlights the hard-working suppliers of essential products\, including Farm Market Managers\, Fishmongers\, and Beach Vendors. By portraying these self-employed individuals\, often operating within informal economies\, Galbreath draws attention to the unique challenges they face. These individuals frequently contend with low\, inconsistent incomes\, long hours\, and sometimes exploitative conditions\, fostering a sense of solidarity with those who labor under such circumstances.\n\nFurthermore\, the series invites viewers to confront the broader societal structures that contribute to these inequities. Galbreath's work serves not only as a tribute but also as a call to action to consider how our consumer habits and economic policies affect the livelihoods of others. The layered narratives present in this series open a dialogue about the value we place on labor and the often unseen struggles that support our day-to-day lives. Through these explorations\, Galbreath establishes a multifaceted narrative that intertwines art with activism\, compelling audiences to engage both aesthetically and ethically with the realities depicted in the exhibition.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Materia Magica: Materiality and Ritual in the Greco-Roman World
DESCRIPTION:View a diverse array of artifacts which were created to communicate with and call upon various unseen\, supernatural forces for aid and protection. While the objects on display are disparate at first glance\, ranging from lead tablets and amulets to papyrus and parchment leaves\, they all share a common thread: they have long been labeled as \"magical\" in traditional Western scholarship.\n\nHowever\, each of these artifacts is better understood on a broad spectrum of ancient ritual\, from subversive and transgressive acts to highly social and visible ones. The exhibit highlights the objects’ oft-overlooked material dimensions\, asking us to consider how qualities like color\, texture\, and weight shaped an object’s perceived efficacy and meaning. \n\nThis exhibit was a collaboration\, and displays items from several University of Michigan units: the library’s Special Collections Research Center and Papyrology Collection\, the Museum of Natural History\, and the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology. DESCRIPTION:This exhibition showcases a decade of artist Terry Swafford’s work in Detroit\, marking the culmination of years spent composing scenes from the untamed edges of urban communities. These paintings serve as a visual record of Detroit’s transformation\, capturing humanity’s impact on the environment alongside nature’s persistent efforts to reclaim these spaces. As the city continues to change\, many of these depicted scenes are vanishing\, no longer visible in the landscape today. The significance of this documentation goes beyond mere nostalgia\; it invites viewers to reflect on the dynamic interplay between urban development and ecological restoration\, prompting a deeper understanding of how cities evolve while retaining traces of their history.\n\nSwafford’s paintings are created on location and in one session. The natural conditions\, including light\, shadow\, and atmosphere\, change dramatically from hour to hour and day to day\, forcing the artist to respond quickly and decisively. This approach\, born of a direct engagement with the subject and the fleeting nature of the scene\, along with his wet-on-wet technique\, keeps the work fresh and immediate. By immersing himself in the environment\, Swafford captures the diverse textures and vibrant colors that characterize Detroit’s landscape\, imbuing his work with a sense of urgency and spontaneity. Each brushstroke conveys a commitment not only to visual accuracy but also to emotional resonance\, as he strives to encapsulate the spirit of a place that is both loved and contested.\n\nIn addition to these works\, the artist constantly sketches ideas both for paintings and for designing projects in his business. These sketches serve as visual language\, helping him clarify and refine his concepts before bringing them to life. They become a means to communicate ideas to clients and his crew and become an extension of his voice—an academic exercise rooted in artistic practice that fosters collaboration and innovation. The act of sketching also reflects his evolving relationship with the city\, as each drawing encapsulates fleeting moments of inspiration drawn directly from his surroundings. This duality of function—creating art for exhibition and conceptualizing designs for projects—demonstrates Swafford’s versatility and adaptability as an artist.\n\nSwafford received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting from the Rhode Island School of Design\, and while at RISD\, he was part of the European Honors Program. His education not only honed his technical skills but also broadened his artistic perspective through exposure to varied artistic traditions. He has shown his work in both solo and group exhibitions in Chicago\, Kansas City\, and New York State. Each exhibition serves as a testament to his commitment to his craft and his ability to engage diverse audiences\, offering them an opportunity to explore the complex narratives woven into each landscape.

DESCRIPTION:Monday\, April 13\, 2026\n11:00am - 12:00pm\n1020 Kahn Auditorium\, BSRB\n\nJacy Wagnon\, PhD\nAssistant Professor\nDepartment of Neuroscience\nThe Ohio State University College of Medicine\n“Seminar Title TBD”\n\nHosted By: Miriam Meisler\, PhD\, Department of Human Genetics\n___\nDevelopmental and epileptic encephalopathies (DEE) are a genetically heterogeneous group of neurological disorders characterized by early-onset seizures along with cognitive\, motor\, and behavioral impairments. The Wagnon laboratory is interested in understanding genetic and molecular mechanisms underlying DEE and identifying new treatment strategies for these severe disorders. Our current studies focus on DEE caused by variants in the neuronal voltage-gated sodium channel gene SCN8A. We are developing mouse models of SCN8A encephalopathy to study pathogenesis of seizures and related comorbidities. A second focus of the lab is to investigate the role of regulation of gene expression in seizure pathology. Changes in mRNA and microRNA levels represent a general transcriptional response to seizures that may implicate new therapeutic targets.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Developmental Psychology Visiting Scholar Talk | Understanding the development of literacy and the processes leading to fluent biliteracy
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Lorraine Nadelman Visiting Scholar Fund\n\nAbstract: \nDespite the growing number of bilingual children in the world\, current literacy models and early reading interventions remain largely monolingual in design\, not addressing the developmental stages of biliteracy development. However\, the idea that literacy development in two languages may be related for bilingual children learning to read and write is in accordance with the indisputable evidence that the bilingual’s two languages are simultaneously active during language acquisition and use even in situations in which individuals intend to produce or comprehend one language alone (e.g.\, Kroll et al.\, 2015). In this talk\, I will argue that both the development of literacy and the processes leading to fluent biliteracy can be examined through the Four Levels of Literacy Model (Alves & Finger\, 2023)\, which consists of a continuum of four complementary levels\, referred to as Sociometalinguistic Skills\, Alphabetic Literacy\, Textual Literacy\, and Social Literacy. I will also discuss the research that we are currently developing in my lab which investigates the developmental trajectories of phonological awareness and reading and writing skills in bilingual learners\, connecting these findings with some of my previous work that suggests the existence of an interrelated development of both receptive and productive skills in contexts of biliteracy instruction (Finger\, Lemke\, et al.\, 2024\; Finger & Weissheimer 2024\; Lemke et al.\, 2023\; Oliveira et al.\, 2025).\n\nAbout the Speaker: \nDr. Ingrid Finger is a Full Professor in the Department of Modern Languages and the Graduate Program in Languages and Literature at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS)\, Brazil\, where she runs the Bilingualism and Cognition Lab – LABICO since 2006. Her research explores the cognitive and linguistic underpinnings of literacy development in monolingual and bilingual children\, with a particular focus on how phonological awareness contributes to biliteracy acquisition across distinct bilingual education contexts. Through this work\, she addresses the universal\, language-specific\, and bilingual influences on child reading development and dyslexia She is the author of several books\, including Literacy in Monolingual and Bilingual Contexts\, co-authored with Ubiratã Kickhöfel Alves (Vozes\, 2023) and Literacy and Biliteracy: From Theory to Practice (Pontes\, 2025). She is a member of the Brazilian National Science for Education Network.

DESCRIPTION:Kathy Beck performs on the Charles Baird Carillon\, an instrument of 53 bronze bells located inside the Burton Memorial Tower. The largest bell\, which strikes the hour\, weighs 12 tons\, while the smallest bell\, 4½ octaves above\, weighs just 15 pounds.\n\nThirty-minute recitals are performed on the Charles Baird Carillon at noon every weekday that classes are in session\, followed by visitor Q&A with the carillonist. The bell chamber may be accessed via a combination of elevator and stairs. Take the elevator to the highest floor possible (floor 8)\, and then climb two flights of stairs (39 steps) to the bell chamber (floor 10). Hearing protection earmuffs are provided for visitors. Be prepared to walk on ice and snow in the bell chamber during winter. Built in 1936\, the Charles Baird Carillon is not ADA accessible. Visitors with mobility concerns are invited to visit the Lurie Carillon.

This symposium seeks to reframe these tensions by exploring the deep\, intertwined histories of Jewish and Muslim communities—histories marked by both collaboration and conflict. By drawing on these shared pasts\, we aim to develop strategies that foster inclusivity\, combat racism\, and reduce ethnic and religious intolerance in academic spaces. \nThe symposium will consist of four sessions that focus on Judeo-Muslim Entanglements in the Middle Ages\; Jewish-Muslim Life in the Present\; Interrogating Islamophobia\, Anti-Semitism\, and Anti-Blackness\; and Zionism and the Christian Right. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:MCDB Master's Thesis Defense Seminar> Tissue Maturation and Wound Healing in the Drosophila Prostate-like Accessory Gland
DESCRIPTION:The Drosophila malagonaster (fruit fly) accessory gland (AG) is functionally and structurally analogous to the mammalian prostate and serves as a model for epithelial growth and tissue plasticity. Like the mammalian prostate\, the fly AG consists of two types of  secretory epithelial cells\, an extracellular matrix\, and a surrounding innervated muscle sheath. The secretory epithelium is composed of large\, postmitotic cells that are binucleated and polyploid\, revealing that the differentiation process for the development of this tissue involves extensive cell cycle remodeling\, such as skipping cytokinesis to result in bi-nucleation and skipping M-phases to result in polyploidy. Following eclosion\, the tissue goes through a pronounced growth phase during the first 10 days of adult life. However because this tissue remains post mitotic in the adult\, cell cycle activity during the first 4 hours after adult emergence\, drives growth through a further increase in cell ploidy (chromosome content) during organ maturation. We have also observed that damage to this tissue induces compensatory cellular enlargement through increases in polyploidy\, a response analogous to hypertrophic growth observed in the mammalian liver following a partial hepatectomy. In this study\, RNA sequencing was used to characterize transcriptional dynamics during the first five days post-eclosion to identify gene expression changes underlying early AG growth. In parallel\, tissue wound healing capabilities were assessed using a novel acute puncture model. Recovery following damage was evaluated through fluorescent staining and a damage responsive GFP reporter line\, enabling visualization of cellular responses and identification of candidate pathways in damage induced growth. Together\, these findings provide insight into the molecular mechanisms involved in growth and tissue plasticity in the AG and establish a framework for studying epithelial regeneration in a system that allows for direct genetic analysis.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Realigning Incentives for a More Secure Internet Ecosystem
DESCRIPTION:Professor Mingyan Liu is receiving the T.C.Chang Professorship. Reception to immediately follow in the EECS Atrium.\n\nAbstract: \nMany of the cybersecurity issues facing the modern digital society can ultimately be traced to an array of misaligned incentives. For instance\, the vast majority of the cost of a data breach is not borne by the firm suffering the breach\, but by the users and consumers whose data were stolen\; similarly\, the harm caused by software problems is\, by and large\, shouldered by consumers\, not developers. Over the past decade\, an overarching goal of my research group has been to develop innovative data analytics methodologies and policy ideas to help realign these incentives. Within this context\, I will present our recent work in new approaches to quantifying cyber risk at an organizational level\, quantifying the social cost of data breaches\, and in developing mathematical models that capture the strategic interactions and decision making among parties driven by different incentives.\nBio: \nMingyan Liu is a leading expert in sequential decision and learning theory\, game theory and incentive mechanisms\, all within the context of large-scale networked systems and with applications to cybersecurity. Technologies she developed in this space have been successfully transitioned.  She co-founded the start-up company\, QuadMetrics\, Inc.\, commercializing predictive data analytics her team developed for cyber risk quantification that resulted in the first global enterprise cybersecurity ratings system\; it was acquired by the analytics software company Fair Isaac (FICO) in 2016.  This technology has been used for enterprise risk management\, vendor management\, cyber insurance underwriting\, and most recently\, in augmenting Environmental\, Social\, and Governance (ESG) ratings.  For this she received the “Crossing the Valley of Death” PI Excellence Award from the Department of Homeland Security in 2016.\nProf. Liu joined the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor\, in September 2000\, as an assistant professor in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.  She was the Peter and Evelyn Fuss Chair of ECE from 2018 to 2023\, and has been the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs since 2023.  She is the recipient of the 2002 NSF CAREER Award\, the University of Michigan Elizabeth C. Crosby Research Award in 2003 and 2014\, the 2010 EECS Department Outstanding Achievement Award\, the 2015 CoE Excellence in Education Award\, the 2017 CoE Excellence in Service Award\, and the 2018 Distinguished University Innovator Award.  She has received a number of Best Paper Awards and has served on the editorial boards of IEEE and ACM Transaction. She is a Fellow of the IEEE and a member of the ACM.\nProf. Liu received an MS degree in Systems Engineering and Ph.D in Electrical Engineering from the University of Maryland\, College Park\, in 1997 and 2000\, respectively.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:GLNT: Propagating congruences in the local Langlands program
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: I will describe recent work-in-progress with Tony Feng in which we compare the Fargues–Scholze local Langlands correspondence to Kaletha's local Langlands correspondence for non-singular tame supercuspidal representations. The main underlying theorem is an explicit special case of Langlands functoriality\, which we prove by leveraging Feng's recent results on \"modular functoriality\" several times.

DESCRIPTION:Oliwia Bosomtwe\, the author of *Jak biały człowiek* (2024) [Like a White Man]\, explores the stories of people of African descent who were born in Poland\, chose it as their homeland\, or passed through briefly\, and examines what it means to be Black in a predominantly white society\, surrounded by stereotypes\, fantasies\, and projections of Blackness.\n   \n   Oliwia Bosomtwe’s work focuses on the history of Polish engagements with Blackness and Sub-Saharan Africa. She writes\, moderates public discussions\, and occasionally curates exhibitions. A graduate of the Interdisciplinary Individual Studies in the Humanities at the University of Warsaw\, she is currently pursuing a PhD in sociology at SWPS University. Bosomtwe is the former editor-in-chief of the portal Noizz.pl\, and she also collaborates with the magazine Znak\, among others.\n   \nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at gosiak@umich.edu.
