SUMMARY:Exhibition:Early Astronomy in the University of Michigan Collections
DESCRIPTION:Trace how astronomy was developed\, studied\, and disseminated through the centuries\, from 1500 BCE to the Renaissance. On display is material drawn from the University of Michigan collections dealing with the history of early astronomy: manuscripts\, early printed books\, and artifacts illustrating Mesopotamian\, Greek\, Islamic\, and Western European astronomy.\n\nThis exhibit and its permanent online counterpart (https://umlib.us/earlyastronomy) are part of the Aratus Project\, which was sponsored by the National Science Foundation and led by Prof. Francesca Schironi. The core of the project has been to study Aratus’ \"Phaenomena\,\" the most important poem on stars and constellations of the Graeco-Roman ancient world\, and its exegetical tradition. Read an annotated edition and English translation of \"Phaenomena\" and its commentaries (https://aratus.classics.lsa.umich.edu/). The physical and online exhibits place this research work within its later intellectual and historical context.\n\nCurated by: John Steele\, Professor of the History of the Exact Sciences in Antiquity\, Department of Egyptology and Assyriology\, Brown University\; Francesca Schironi\, U-M Professor of Classical Studies\; Evyn Kropf\, U-M Librarian for Middle Eastern & North African Studies\; Pablo Alvarez\, U-M Curator (Special Collections Research Center).\n\nCheck Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours: https://myumi.ch/2mx44

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Humanize the Numbers
DESCRIPTION:Prison Creative Arts Project presents an exhibition of collaborative photography at the Detroit Historical Museum (5401 Woodward Ave. in Detroit)\, open now through May 21st.\n\nA public reception will be held on March 9th\, 6:00–9:00 PM\, with a panel of previous workshop participants at 7:00 PM.\n\nWe hope you will be able to see the exhibit\, and please be in touch if you have any questions.\n\nHumanize the Numbers shows the perspectives of men in Michigan prisons. The prison system regulates every part of an inmate's identity. Instead of using their name\, they are given an ID number. Visiting room photos and mug shots are tightly regulated. Personal info is recorded: height\, weight\, etc. In the process\, their humanity is denied.\n\nThis exhibit at the Detroit Historical Museum reveals the faces and stories of those in prison. It lifts up the voices of those who have been silenced by the criminal legal system. The Humanize the Numbers project gives them a freedom not normally allowed in prison. They share their stories with the world outside. By doing so\, those in prison reclaim their humanity.\n\nMuseum hours\nThursdays–Saturdays: 10:00 AM–5:00PM \nSundays: 1:00–5:00 PM

SUMMARY:Exhibition:UN/EARTH
DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:The Premodern Colloquium. Erhard Ratdolt: The Manipulation of Light in Fifteenth Century Mathematical and Astronomical Treatises
DESCRIPTION:In his editio princeps of Euclid’s Elements\, German-expatriate publisher Erhard Ratdolt included a dedicatory letter to the Venetian Doge entirely printed in gold leaf. The technological feat forces the viewer to participate with a light source in order to read the luminous text. Taking this notion of embodied reading further\, I propose that both in his Euclid and later\, in his astronomical compilation Sphaera Mundi\, Ratdolt aligned diagrams on either side of a single folio. In the course of turning the page\, light transmitted through the thin paper support illuminates both diagrams at once. This allowed viewers to compare related geometric proofs or to visualize overlaps in the orbits of celestial bodies.\n \nThrough an investigation of translucency and luminosity in late fifteenth-century Venetian visual and material culture\, I consider how publishers mobilized technologies of print to exploit the material properties of paper. Similarly\, I examine how contemporary epistemologies may have led viewers to look through the folio. I argue that producers of Venetian material culture were particularly skilled in the creation of these effects between translucency and opacity and that savvy Venetian viewers were attuned to the movement of light within and through familiar objects.\n\nTo receive a registration link\, please contact Terre Fisher telf@umich.edu.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Caroline Sinders: Intertwined Intimacy
DESCRIPTION:Intertwined Intimacy is a series of architectural sculptures ruminating on privacy and intimacy\, and how the infrastructure of visible and invisible spaces influences communities\, communications\, and safety. \nThis work stems from artist Caroline Sinders&#039\; previous work combining research driven art and human rights analysis that responds to current technology systems by focusing on how the design of &#039\;infrastructural&#039\; and &#039\;architectural&#039\; spaces\, both online and offline\, impacts safety. By focusing on prototypian futures\, Intertwined Intimacy observes impacts through public infrastructure\, and open\, digital commons inspired by mutual aid and open source technology. To generate this research\, Sinders analyzed how structures\, metaphors and engagements of privacy and security within technology impact mental models The sculptures create a labyrinth\, allowing for a space of reflection and consideration for the audience\, as the sculptures slowly become more and more opaque\, offering areas of hidden solitude and refuge.\nCaroline Sinders is the 2023 Roman J. Witt Artist in Residence. This annual international competition awards one residency per academic year to a visiting artist/designer who proposes to develop a new work in collaboration with members of the Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design and the University of Michigan community. Learn more about Sinders&#039\; residency and practice in this Q&amp\;A.\nSinders is an award winning critical designer\, researcher\, and artist. She is the founder of human rights and design lab\, Convocation Research + Design. For the past few years\, she has been examining the intersections of artificial intelligence\, intersectional justice\, systems design\, harm\, and politics in digital conversational spaces and technology platforms. She has worked with the Tate Exchange at the Tate Modern\, the United Nations\,the European Commission\, Ars Electronica\, the Harvard Kennedy School and others. Sinders is currently based between London\, UK and New Orleans\, USA.

SUMMARY:Performance:Mary Gauthier
DESCRIPTION:Mary Gauthier’s 11th album\, her first in over eight years consisting of all her own songs\, “Dark Enough to See the Stars” follows the profound “Rifles & Rosary Beads\,” her 2018 collaborative work with wounded Iraq war veterans. That album garnered a Grammy nomination for Best Folk Album\, as well as a nomination for Album of the Year by the Americana Music Association. Publication of her first book\, the illuminating Saved by a Song: The Art and Healing Power of Songwriting\, in 2021\, brought Marty more praise. Brandi Carlile has said\, “Mary’s songwriting speaks to the tender aspects of our humanness. We need her voice in times like these more than we ever have.” The Associated Press called Mary “one of the best songwriters of her generation.” Mary Gauthier didn’t start writing songs until she was 35 and had moved from her native Louisiana to become a chef in Boston. Her music has been recorded by dozens of artists\, including Jimmy Buffett\, Dolly Parton\, Boy George\, Blake Shelton\, Tim McGraw\, Bettye Lavette\, Mike Farris\, Kathy Mattea\, Bobby Bare\, Amy Helm and Candi Staton\, and has appeared extensively in film and television\, most recently on HBO TV’s Yellowstone. Michigan’s own Chris Buhalis is special guest.\n\n\nPresented by The Ark. \nPlease visit https://mutotix.umich.edu/3791/3792 for more detail.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:CCPS Exhibition. Survivors Saving Survivors: Photographing the Ukrainian Refugee Experience in Poland
DESCRIPTION:In April and June 2022\, at the invitation of JCC Krakow\, Chuck Fishman traveled to Poland to document the JCC and the Jewish community’s commitment to helping Ukrainian refugees fleeing their war-torn country. What he witnessed and captured in a series of gripping photographs is *tikkun olam*\, a central concept in Judaism that denotes activities that repair and improve the world we live in. The exhibit shifts the lens away from the horror the refugees have endured to focus instead on human goodness and how it can overcome lingering evil.\n\nIn his 45-year career\, freelance photographer Chuck Fishman has focused on social and political issues with a strong humanistic concern. His work on Jewish life in Poland\, begun in 1975\, continues to the present day. Fishman’s work has been extensively published\, exhibited\, and collected worldwide\, and has earned him prestigious World Press Photo Foundation medals four times. His photographs have appeared on the covers of *Time*\, *Life*\, *Fortune*\, *Newsweek*\, *The London Sunday Times*\, *The Economist*\, and numerous others. Fishman’s work is included in the collections of the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery\, the United Nations POLIN: The Museum of the History of Polish Jews\, and the Stanford University and New York Public Libraries\, to name a few\, as well as private and corporate collections.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at weisercenter@umich.edu. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:a way outta no way
DESCRIPTION:About the Exhibition\nAs part of the artist's vision for this project\, the installation will be activated on opening night with a collective response to the objects\, the space\, and the archives within. Facilitated by: Ricky Weaver\, Viktor Givens\, Bryce Detroit\, Andrew Wilson\, and Efe Bes.\n\nAbout the Artist\nRicky Weaver is an image-based artist\, theorist\, and mother\, born in Ypsilanti\, MI. Her art and theory are centered around the lexicon generated through black women's everyday practices\, dark sousveillance\, and images as objects that alchemize the archive on a quantum level. She is currently teaching at ArtCenter College of Art and Design in Pasadena\, CA as a fellow for the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design. Weaver is represented by David Klein Gallery and has shown work at Art Miami\, the Havana Biennale\, Sofa Expo\, and more. Her work has been acquired by institutions like the Wedge Collection and published in Aperture’s As We Rise: Photography from the Black Atlantic.\n\nWeaver was named one of LensCulture's Critics Choice Artists of 2020\, selected by Susan Thompson\, associate curator at the Guggenheim Museum. She also participated in the Independent Scholar Fellowship at The Carr Center where she was mentored by Carrie Mae Weems. She earned an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art and a BFA from Eastern Michigan University\, with a concentration in photography. \n\nWeaver recently presented a paper titled “How I Got Over: The Meta-Archive and other registers” at Black Portraitures VII hosted by Rutgers University. Most recently she has taken on the role of lead visual consultant\, specializing in image theory and photography\, for the Global Institute for Black Girls in Film and Media.\n\nThis project is made possible by a grant from the Mellon Foundation as part of the Institute for the Humanities' multi-year High Stakes Art initiative.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Portraits of Feminism in Japan
DESCRIPTION:What is feminism in Japan? Rather than imagining it as a singular\, coherent object\, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity\, difference\, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts\, “feminism” in Japan can invoke sharply different associations\, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority\, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters\, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families\, workplaces\, schools\, political institutions\, and laws\, among many other contexts. Many – but certainly not all – feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects\, working toward recognition\, repair\, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\n\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Created by nine contemporary artists in Japan and the United States\, the portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of \"feminism\" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences\, needs\, and activism within Japan. This exhibit also spotlights the history of Japanese studies at the University of Michigan in conjunction with the Center for Japanese Studies' 75th anniversary celebration. \n\n“Portraits of Feminism in Japan” is open for viewing M-F 9am-4pm or by appointment. University of Michigan instructors can email LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu to request a group tour or schedule a class visit.\n\nFeatured artists:\nElaine Cromie\, JenClare B. Gawaran\, Takatoshi Hayashi\, ivokuma (いぼくま)\, Nami Kaneko (金子奈美)\, Kang Jungsook\, Lisa Taka Miyagi\, Nancy Nishihira (西平・ナンシー)\, and Shigeki Shibata (柴田滋紀)\n\nCuration team: \nAllison Alexy\, Bradly Hammond\, Grace Mahoney\, and Alexandria Molinari

SUMMARY:Meeting:Vision 2034: Town Halls
DESCRIPTION:The University of Michigan is engaging in a collective strategic visioning process to imagine our shared future for the next 10 years — our Vision 2034. The active participation of U-M students\, faculty\, staff\, alumni and partners will be vital to the initiative’s success. Join us as we embark on this historic journey. \n\nThe collective visioning process for Vision 2034 will occur throughout 2023 alongside other important U-M efforts\, including Campus Planning — which will explore how the physical campus must evolve to support the future of U-M. It will build upon the insights and lessons learned from other ongoing university engagement efforts including Bold Challenges\, Bold Ideas\, Culture Journey\, as well as planning for Diversity\, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) 2.0. In addition\, Vision 2034 will incorporate the strategic planning efforts occurring across the institution — including at UM–Dearborn\, UM-Flint\, and Michigan Medicine. It also will be informed by the 2023 U-M Audience Research Project findings\, expected soon.\n\nOur primary objectives are to:\n\n• Engage the university community at large in crafting a compelling vision for our shared future\, grounded in our mission and values. Learn how to get involved.\n\n• Generate big ideas through town halls\, surveys\, focus groups and other forums.\n\n• Incorporate key themes from recent campus-wide engagement efforts and other planning initiatives to inform the vision.\n\n• Deliver a shared vision for charting the path of the university into the next 10 years.\n\n• Enable university leadership to establish mechanisms to measure progress toward our vision over time.\n\nThe sessions available in this track offer multiple opportunities for feedback and idea contribution through a Town Hall format. A variety of audience groups & organizations will also participate through invite-only focus groups (not listed here).\n\nPlease note: Registration for events is currently limited to U-M faculty\, staff\, and students. If you do not see an event for your U-M affiliation\, please check back at a later time. Additional engagement opportunities will be continuously added.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:RCGD Winter Seminar Series: American partisans misperceive the diversity\, not the extremity\, of other partisans' attitudes
DESCRIPTION:A popular explanation for rising partisan animosity and declining faith in democracy in the United States is that Republicans and Democrats misperceive each other to hold extreme policy attitudes. Yet\, perceptions of group attitudes vary along other dimensions\, and these perceptions are likely as important to democracy. In particular\, Americans may underestimate the diversity of Democrats' and Republicans' attitudes to harmful effect. This paper uses surveys and pre-registered experiments with representative and convenience samples (N = 6\,158) to assess the extent to which Americans misperceive that each party holds ``all the same'' attitudes and\, furthermore\, the consequences of these perceptions. Contrary to existing research\, we find that American partisans do not consistently overestimate how radical the ``average'' Republican or Democrat is. However\, Republicans and Democrats do vastly underestimate the diversity of each party's attitudes. Correcting these misperceptions of within-party attitude diversity reduces partisan animosity and the perceived threat posed by the opposing party.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Black Ownership Matters: Does Revealing Race Increase Demand For Minority-Owned Businesses?
DESCRIPTION:Is there consumer demand to support Black-owned businesses? To explore\, we investigate the impact of a new feature on a large online platform that made the race of a set of Black business owners salient to customers. We find that this feature substantially increased demand for Black-owned businesses - in the form of more calls to the restaurant\, more delivery orders\, and - using cell phone data from a different platform - more in person visits to the restaurant. New customers to Black-owned businesses were more likely to be White customers - suggesting demand among White restaurant goers for Black-owned businesses. The gains for Black-owned businesses vary across geographically fine-grained measures of racial prejudice: we observe larger gains in areas with less anti-Black bias\, as measured by implicit association tests. We also find suggestive evidence that the effects are stronger in predominately White\, Democratic-leaning areas.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:How Do We Think of Social Diversity: History and Politics in the Work of René Zavaleta Mercado
DESCRIPTION:Today’s call for diversity in the United States quite often reduces itself to body count. René Zavaleta Mercado (1937-1984)\, one of Latin America’s most imaginative social scientists\, confronted the question of respecting diversity in the analysis of social reality in the twentieth century. *Towards a History of the National Popular in Bolivia*\, now translated into English for the first time\, confronts this question not only in terms of mere inclusion but in terms of a “motley” social situation\, devising methodology to represent its demand.\n\nLuis Tapia\, our speaker\, another imaginative Bolivian thinker and activist\, is the leading expert on Zavaleta. In his own book\, *The Production of Local Knowledge: History and Politics in the Work of René Zavaleta Mercado*\, also translated into English for the first time\, he lays out an epistemological program to make Zavaleta’s injunction real. Tapia’s talk will evolve from a crucial question: ‘How do we have to change ourselves so that the idea of a “motley” society does not turn into voting blocs\, destroying democracy?\n\nApril 17th\, 2023 4:00pm - 5:30pm in the RLL Commons\nJoin us for free coffee & cookies\n\nDon't miss the book sale!\n- *The Production of Local Knowledge: History and Politics in the Work of René Zavaleta Mercado* by Luis Tapia\n- *Towards a History of the National Popular in Bolivia* by René Zavaleta Mercado

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:ISRMT Seminar - Reflectionless canonical systems: almost periodicity and character-automorphic Fourier transforms
DESCRIPTION:In the spectral theory of self-adjoint and unitary operators in one dimension (such as Schrodinger\, Dirac\, and Jacobi operators)\, a half-line operator is encoded by a Weyl function\; for whole-line operators\, the reflectionless property is a pseudocontinuation relation between the two half-line Weyl functions. We develop a comprehensive theory of reflectionless canonical systems with an arbitrary Dirichlet-regular Widom spectrum with the Direct Cauchy Theorem property. This generalizes\, to an infinite gap setting\, the constructions of finite gap quasiperiodic (algebro-geometric) solutions of stationary integrable hierarchies. Instead of theta functions on a compact Riemann surface\, the construction is based on reproducing kernels of character-automorphic Hardy spaces in Widom domains with respect to Martin measure. We also construct unitary character-automorphic Fourier transforms which generalize the Paley-Wiener theorem. Finally\, we find the correct notion of almost periodicity which holds in general for canonical system parameters in Arov gauge\, and we prove generically optimal results for almost periodicity for Potapov-de Branges gauge\, and Dirac operators. This is joint work with Roman Bessonov and Peter Yuditskii.\n\nA recording of the talk can be found at https://youtu.be/ZEcHCixsCbU

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Group\, Lie and Number Theory Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Title: Twisted linear periods and a new relative trace formula\n\nAbstract: We study the linear periods on GL2n twisted by a character. When the character is trivial\, Guo and Jacquet proposed a relative trace formula approach in the mid 90s. This trace formula however cannot be extended to the case with a nontrivial character. We propose a new trace formula to attack this general case. This is joint work with Wei Zhang.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:An Ordinary Man: The Surprising Life and Historic Presidency of Gerald R. Ford
DESCRIPTION:Join the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Foundation and the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library & Museum for an event at the Ford School hosted as part of the long-awaited book tour for Richard Norton Smith's An Ordinary Man. Richard Norton Smith will be joined in conversation with Hank Meijer to explore Richard’s new book An Ordinary Man: The Surprising Life and Historic Presidency of Gerald R. Ford.\n\nAbout the book\nFrom the preeminent presidential scholar and acclaimed biographer of historical figures including George Washington\, Herbert Hoover\, and Nelson Rockefeller comes this eye-opening life of Gerald R. Ford\, whose presidency arguably set the course for post-liberal America and a post-Cold War world.\n\nFor many Americans\, President Gerald Ford was the genial accident of history who controversially pardoned his Watergate-tarnished predecessor\, presided over the fall of Saigon\, and became a punching bag on Saturday Night Live. Yet as Richard Norton Smith reveals in a book full of surprises\, Ford was an underrated leader whose tough decisions and personal decency look better with the passage of time.\n\nDrawing on hundreds of interviews and thousands of documents\, Smith recreates Ford’s hardscrabble childhood in Michigan\, his early anti-establishment politics and lifelong love affair with the former Betty Bloomer\, whose impact on American culture he predicted would outrank his own. As president\, Ford guided the nation through its worst Constitutional crisis since the Civil War and broke the back of the most severe economic downturn since the Great Depression—accomplishing both with little fanfare or credit (at least until 2001 when the JFK Library gave him its prestigious Profile in Courage Award in belated recognition of the Nixon pardon).\n\nLess coda than curtain raiser\, Ford's administration bridged the Republican pragmatism of Eisenhower and Nixon and the more doctrinaire conservatism of Ronald Reagan. His introduction of economic deregulation would transform the American economy\, while his embrace of the Helsinki Accords hastened the collapse of the Soviet Union.\n\nIllustrated with sixteen pages of black-and-white photos\, this definitive biography\, a decade in the making\, will change history’s views of a man whose warning about presidential arrogance (“God help the country”) is more relevant than ever.

SUMMARY:Performance:Mark O'Conner - Crossing Bridges
DESCRIPTION:A memoir in music\n\nOver the years\, we’ve featured fiddler Mark O’Connor at The Ark many times\, with each show revealing a new facet of this amazing American musician. Mark’s new project\, “Crossing Bridges\,” gives a glimpse into how it all came to be. “Crossing Bridges” is a book and a concert\, tracing his journey rom his childhood years\, when at age 11 he was winning classical guitar competitions against University graduates\, and at age 12 was thrust as a soloist onto the Grand Ole Opry stage introduced by the King of Country Music\, Roy Acuff. The story covers Mark’s 1970s child prodigy years on the road as national fiddle and guitar champion. The acclaimed musician learned at the feet of American music legends while exploring his relationships with his mother and dysfunctional family\, a near career-ending accident and his involvement in some of the world's most iconic instrumental bands. The memoir details the personal triumphs\, struggles and demons that informed the decisions he made about his music\, career path and the risks he was willing to take for a shot at the brass ring. The first half of this show will feature music from Mark O’Connor\, while the second half offers a discussion of the book\, anecdotes\, and a Q&A. Mark will sign copies of “Crossing Bridges” in the Ark lobby after the show.\n\n\nPlease visit https://mutotix.umich.edu/3875/3876 for more detail.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:LSI SciComm Speaker Series: Liz Neeley and Ed Yong
DESCRIPTION:We are living through multiple simultaneous global crises\, so vast and complex that they seemingly defy sense. During such times\, good communication can help people understand the brutal realities of the present while equipping them with necessary hope in a brighter future. Drawing from their decades of experience\, from conservation to COVID reporting\, Liz Neeley and Ed Yong will discuss the art and science of sense-making in a time of crisis\, and why it's crucial to the challenges that we face. \n\n**Copies of Yong's books will be available for sale\, along with a book-signing opportunity\, immediately following the presentation.**\n\n*The LSI's SciComm Speaker Series highlights the importance of disseminating scientific findings beyond the walls of the academy and effectively communicating the impact of publicly-funded research. This annual event provides world-leading science writers and communicators with an opportunity to share their experiences with faculty\, staff and students\, while also tapping into U-M's vast scientific research community.*\n\n**Liz Neeley** is the founder and principal of Liminal Creations\, a design firm focused on science and communication. She is fascinated by blending the power and beauty of the art with rigorous research on how people make sense of the world around us. Until September 2020\, Neeley was the Executive Director of The Story Collider\, where she focused on true\, personal stories of science told live on stage. Over the past fifteen years\, she has specialized in environmental science\, journalism\, policy and social media\, always searching for the best ways of spreading ideas through complex networks. \n\n**Ed Yong** is a science staff writer with The Atlantic. He was awarded the 2021 Pulitzer Prize for Explanatory Reporting for his crucial coverage of the coronavirus pandemic\, and was named “the most important and impactful journalist\" of 2020 by Poynter. He anticipated the course of the virus\, the complex challenges that the U.S. faced\, and the government’s disastrous failure in its response. He is the author of two New York Times bestsellers\, An Immense World and I Contain Multitudes. Before he joined The Atlantic\, Ed’s writing was featured in National Geographic\, The New Yorker\, Wired\, The New York Times\, Nature\, New Scientist\, Scientific American and other publications.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:LRCCS Noon Lecture Series | Early Modern Forms of Chinese Literary Play: Database\, Interface\, and Iconography in Shuihuzhuan/Suikoden
DESCRIPTION:If you would like to attend via Zoom\, please register at https://myumi.ch/5JNzG\n\nThis talk examines one of the most popular remediations of the 16th-century Chinese novel “Outlaws of the Marsh” by comparing it to the popular Japanese video-game series “Suikoden.” In doing so\, this talk will question some of the central tensions in the contemporary iteration of this classic\, the tension between material and digital as card and video-game\, between the desire for completion (crucial to collecting) and repetition (essential to play)\, as well as the visual/haptic pleasure of holding/viewing your favorite character in isolation versus recognizing the same character as part of an “assembly” when part of a narrative/game. By juxtaposing the contemporary Japanese video-game with the earlier\, literary classic\, this talk will ask whether principles of contemporary play can serve to question some of our assumptions about the premodern text indeed the genre of the “novel” itself.\n \n Paize Keulemans is an Associate Professor of East Asian Studies at Princeton University. His research interests are focused on the interaction between late-imperial Chinese literature and different media\, a theme he explored in terms of the interaction between sound and text in his first book\, \"Sound Rising from the Paper: Martial Arts Fiction and the Chinese Acoustic Imagination\" (Harvard University Asia Center Press\, 2015) and as the tension between news\, gossip\, and literature in his second book (“Idle Chatter: The Productive Uses of Rumor in Early Modern Chinese Literature\,” under review at Harvard University Asia Center Press). His latest project\, tentatively entitled “Old Novels\, New Games: The Concept of Play in Late Ming and Late Twentieth-Century Chinese Culture\,” focuses on the remediation of China’s great Ming-Dynasty novels as contemporary video Games.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Social Research with Unstructured Data: Connection Series
DESCRIPTION:Social science increasingly uses data that requires advanced tools and algorithms. Preparing text\, audio\, and video data for analysis and running those analyses involves linking contemporary computational tools with datasets and major research challenges in ways that cut across disciplines. Building bridges between data scientists who develop the tools to analyze these data and social scientists who have datasets to address research questions in unprecedented ways that could benefit from them is critical for both opening the world of these new data and refining the tools for analysis.\n \nThe Social Research with Unstructured Data: Connection Series\, jointly sponsored by MIDAS\, the AI Lab and ISR\, is designed to build connections between social scientists and data scientists to improve scholarship in both arenas. Scholars in both groups present research vision and cutting-edge methodology that could benefit from additional interdisciplinary collaboration and theorizing. The series connects faculty\, research scientists\, postdoctoral\, and graduate students to help build major research projects from their vision\, find the right methods for their data\, identify collaborators\, or find scholars who can help trial run the tools they have developed. \n \nEvents will be held from 2:00-3:30 PM in ISR 6050 (426 Thompson Street)\, with meetings in January\, February\, March\, April\, and May. Refreshments provided. We encourage you to sign up ahead of time: https://myumi.ch/7eZWG For more information\, or if you are interested in presenting work in progress at this series\, please contact Beth Uberseder (ubersbe@umich.edu).\n \nSpeakers TBA.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Colloquium: Obstructing sliceness of knots from genus bounds in 4-manifolds
DESCRIPTION:We say a knot in the 3-sphere is slice if it bounds a smooth disk into the 4-ball. If the disk can be obtained from a special kind of immersion into S^3 (pushed into B^4)\, then we say the knot is ribbon. A long-standing open conjecture of Fox posits that every slice knot is ribbon. I will talk about this open problem and discuss why it would be so difficult to disprove this conjecture\, if it is false (and one obstruction that might work). I’ll relate sliceness of knots to lower bounds on the genus of some surfaces embedded in nontrivial 4-manifolds\, and use some old (difficult) such lower bounds to recover a recent interesting result of Dai—Kang—Mallick—Park—Stoffregen that a certain knot is not slice (which is unfortunate\, because it’s much easier to prove that it isn’t ribbon). This is joint work with Paolo Aceto\, Nickolas A. Castro\, JungHwan Park and András Stipsicz.

SUMMARY:Other:Understanding structure-function relationships in transition-metal-containing enzymes
DESCRIPTION:The Silakov laboratory seeks to uncover principles underpinning biology\'s control over the reactivity of metal complexes in enzymes. Millions of years of natural selection in harsh\, nutrient-limiting environments evolved organisms into highly effective and extremely selective metabolic systems. Organisms from all kingdoms of life are replete with enzymes that facilitate a staggering array of reactions with efficiency using nothing but abundant 3rd-row transition metal ions that is hard to replicate using pure synthetic chemistry approaches. To understand how similar metal-containing catalytic centers can vary their reactivity depending on the protein environment\, we employ various advanced experimental methods such as Electron Paramagnetic Resonance and Infrared spectroscopies\, (spectro)electrochemistry\, and protein film voltammetry. As some knowledge gaps about the function of enzymes stem from the absence of suitable experimental techniques\, we also have a strong interested in developing novel biophysical approaches that allow addressing such gaps. This talk will present two case studies performed by the Silakov laboratory: a superfamily of Fe/2OG oxygenases involved in the biosynthesis of natural products\, and [FeFe] hydrogenases which are highly effective H2-producing enzymes. The ultimate goal of our fundamental research is to inform the development of new biotechnologies to allow environmentally friendly biosynthetic production of much-needed molecules such as drugs and renewable energy resources. \nAlexey Silakov (The Pennsylvania State University)

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Interdisciplinary Islamic Studies Seminar. What is the Relation between the Sufi Khanaqah and Development in India?
DESCRIPTION:How do religious institutions affect long-run development? Most studies examining this relationship study its impact on human capital formation. I instead argue that decentralized religious institutions led to long-run development by anchoring market participation\, political competition\, and public goods provision at the micro-level. The legacy of the past millennium’s religious institutions permeates villages today. I provide empirical evidence from the Indian subcontinent\, where the Sufi Khanaqah evolved from the 13th century onwards. I construct a novel dataset of Khanaqah locations for all villages of India. The dataset is integrated with census-level data for the years 1991\, 2001\, and 2011\, road upgradation data for 2000-2015\, and pooled assembly election results for 1974-2018. Development is indicated by economic activity measured with night-light\, health measured by nutritional status\, literacy rate\, consumption per capita\, and poverty rate. I find that the presence of Khanaqah is empirically associated with higher long-run development at the village-level.

In the context of a supportive community\, LSWA challenges students of all skill levels and academic disciplines to take initiative in shaping their intellectual talents\, to work collaboratively with their peers\, to make meaningful connections with faculty and staff\, and to become leaders themselves.\n\nDuring these live chats\, prospective students will meet current LSWA students and leaders who will share their experiences in the program and answer any questions about life in LSWA.
