SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Local wellposedness of water wave equations with angled crests on the interface
DESCRIPTION:A class of water wave problems concerns the dynamics of the free interface separating an inviscid\, incompressible and irrotational fluid from the vacuum under the influence of gravity. In this talk\, we survey some results on wellposedness of these water wave equations\, and introduce a relatively recent approach that allows us to deal with interfaces that have angled crests.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Caroline Sinders: Intertwined Intimacy
DESCRIPTION:Intertwined Intimacy is a series of architectural sculptures ruminating on privacy and intimacy\, and how the infrastructure of visible and invisible spaces influences communities\, communications\, and safety. \nThis work stems from artist Caroline Sinders&#039\; previous work combining research driven art and human rights analysis that responds to current technology systems by focusing on how the design of &#039\;infrastructural&#039\; and &#039\;architectural&#039\; spaces\, both online and offline\, impacts safety. By focusing on prototypian futures\, Intertwined Intimacy observes impacts through public infrastructure\, and open\, digital commons inspired by mutual aid and open source technology. To generate this research\, Sinders analyzed how structures\, metaphors and engagements of privacy and security within technology impact mental models The sculptures create a labyrinth\, allowing for a space of reflection and consideration for the audience\, as the sculptures slowly become more and more opaque\, offering areas of hidden solitude and refuge.\nCaroline Sinders is the 2023 Roman J. Witt Artist in Residence. This annual international competition awards one residency per academic year to a visiting artist/designer who proposes to develop a new work in collaboration with members of the Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design and the University of Michigan community. Learn more about Sinders&#039\; residency and practice in this Q&amp\;A.\nSinders is an award winning critical designer\, researcher\, and artist. She is the founder of human rights and design lab\, Convocation Research + Design. For the past few years\, she has been examining the intersections of artificial intelligence\, intersectional justice\, systems design\, harm\, and politics in digital conversational spaces and technology platforms. She has worked with the Tate Exchange at the Tate Modern\, the United Nations\,the European Commission\, Ars Electronica\, the Harvard Kennedy School and others. Sinders is currently based between London\, UK and New Orleans\, USA.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Attend an Inclusive History Project Virtual Community Forum
DESCRIPTION:The Inclusive History Project (IHP) is preparing to study and document the University of Michigan’s past and to engage members of the U-M community in order to better understand U-M’s successes and failures in creating a truly inclusive university. Since November\, a Framing & Design Committee of faculty\, staff\, and students from the university’s three campuses has been working to design a multi-year plan for the project.\n\nThe contributions of individuals across our campuses and communities are vital to telling an inclusive history of the university\, and there will be many ways to participate in this shared project. Currently\, we are seeking your thoughts and ideas about the IHP in planning the work ahead of us.\n\nWe invite you to join us for this virtual forum to learn about the IHP and share your feedback. At these sessions\, we will make a brief presentation on the purpose and scope of the project and our planning process and then gather your input through small group discussions.\n\nWe are excited to hear your thoughts and hope you will join us!

DESCRIPTION:New socially conscious folk from one half of 10 String Symphony\n\nRachel Baiman's 2017 label debut\, \"Shame\,\" was featured on NPR's \"Songs We Love\,\" called a \"rootsy wake-up call\" by Folk Alley\, and described by Vice as \"flipping off authority one song at a time.\" She has toured for four years with 10 String Symphony and played fiddle for other musicians\, including Kacey Musgraves. Raised in Chicago by a radical economist and a social worker\, Baiman was surrounded by social justice issues her entire life. \"If I wanted to rebel against my parents I could have become a finance banker or a corporate lawyer\" she says of her childhood\, and her music has a feminist social and political emphasis. SUMMARY:Exhibition:CCPS Exhibition. Survivors Saving Survivors: Photographing the Ukrainian Refugee Experience in Poland
DESCRIPTION:In April and June 2022\, at the invitation of JCC Krakow\, Chuck Fishman traveled to Poland to document the JCC and the Jewish community’s commitment to helping Ukrainian refugees fleeing their war-torn country. What he witnessed and captured in a series of gripping photographs is *tikkun olam*\, a central concept in Judaism that denotes activities that repair and improve the world we live in. The exhibit shifts the lens away from the horror the refugees have endured to focus instead on human goodness and how it can overcome lingering evil.\n\nIn his 45-year career\, freelance photographer Chuck Fishman has focused on social and political issues with a strong humanistic concern. His work on Jewish life in Poland\, begun in 1975\, continues to the present day. Fishman’s work has been extensively published\, exhibited\, and collected worldwide\, and has earned him prestigious World Press Photo Foundation medals four times. His photographs have appeared on the covers of *Time*\, *Life*\, *Fortune*\, *Newsweek*\, *The London Sunday Times*\, *The Economist*\, and numerous others. Fishman’s work is included in the collections of the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery\, the United Nations POLIN: The Museum of the History of Polish Jews\, and the Stanford University and New York Public Libraries\, to name a few\, as well as private and corporate collections.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at weisercenter@umich.edu. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:a way outta no way
DESCRIPTION:About the Exhibition\nAs part of the artist's vision for this project\, the installation will be activated on opening night with a collective response to the objects\, the space\, and the archives within. Facilitated by: Ricky Weaver\, Viktor Givens\, Bryce Detroit\, Andrew Wilson\, and Efe Bes.\n\nAbout the Artist\nRicky Weaver is an image-based artist\, theorist\, and mother\, born in Ypsilanti\, MI. Her art and theory are centered around the lexicon generated through black women's everyday practices\, dark sousveillance\, and images as objects that alchemize the archive on a quantum level. She is currently teaching at ArtCenter College of Art and Design in Pasadena\, CA as a fellow for the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design. Weaver is represented by David Klein Gallery and has shown work at Art Miami\, the Havana Biennale\, Sofa Expo\, and more. Her work has been acquired by institutions like the Wedge Collection and published in Aperture’s As We Rise: Photography from the Black Atlantic.\n\nWeaver was named one of LensCulture's Critics Choice Artists of 2020\, selected by Susan Thompson\, associate curator at the Guggenheim Museum. She also participated in the Independent Scholar Fellowship at The Carr Center where she was mentored by Carrie Mae Weems. She earned an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art and a BFA from Eastern Michigan University\, with a concentration in photography. \n\nWeaver recently presented a paper titled “How I Got Over: The Meta-Archive and other registers” at Black Portraitures VII hosted by Rutgers University. Most recently she has taken on the role of lead visual consultant\, specializing in image theory and photography\, for the Global Institute for Black Girls in Film and Media.\n\nThis project is made possible by a grant from the Mellon Foundation as part of the Institute for the Humanities' multi-year High Stakes Art initiative.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Early Astronomy in the University of Michigan Collections
DESCRIPTION:Trace how astronomy was developed\, studied\, and disseminated through the centuries\, from 1500 BCE to the Renaissance. On display is material drawn from the University of Michigan collections dealing with the history of early astronomy: manuscripts\, early printed books\, and artifacts illustrating Mesopotamian\, Greek\, Islamic\, and Western European astronomy.\n\nThis exhibit and its permanent online counterpart (https://umlib.us/earlyastronomy) are part of the Aratus Project\, which was sponsored by the National Science Foundation and led by Prof. Francesca Schironi. The core of the project has been to study Aratus’ \"Phaenomena\,\" the most important poem on stars and constellations of the Graeco-Roman ancient world\, and its exegetical tradition. Read an annotated edition and English translation of \"Phaenomena\" and its commentaries (https://aratus.classics.lsa.umich.edu/). The physical and online exhibits place this research work within its later intellectual and historical context.\n\nCurated by: John Steele\, Professor of the History of the Exact Sciences in Antiquity\, Department of Egyptology and Assyriology\, Brown University\; Francesca Schironi\, U-M Professor of Classical Studies\; Evyn Kropf\, U-M Librarian for Middle Eastern & North African Studies\; Pablo Alvarez\, U-M Curator (Special Collections Research Center).\n\nCheck Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours: https://myumi.ch/2mx44

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Portraits of Feminism in Japan
DESCRIPTION:What is feminism in Japan? Rather than imagining it as a singular\, coherent object\, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity\, difference\, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts\, “feminism” in Japan can invoke sharply different associations\, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority\, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters\, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families\, workplaces\, schools\, political institutions\, and laws\, among many other contexts. Many – but certainly not all – feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects\, working toward recognition\, repair\, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\n\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Created by nine contemporary artists in Japan and the United States\, the portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of \"feminism\" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences\, needs\, and activism within Japan. This exhibit also spotlights the history of Japanese studies at the University of Michigan in conjunction with the Center for Japanese Studies' 75th anniversary celebration. \n\n“Portraits of Feminism in Japan” is open for viewing M-F 9am-4pm or by appointment. University of Michigan instructors can email LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu to request a group tour or schedule a class visit.\n\nFeatured artists:\nElaine Cromie\, JenClare B. Gawaran\, Takatoshi Hayashi\, ivokuma (いぼくま)\, Nami Kaneko (金子奈美)\, Kang Jungsook\, Lisa Taka Miyagi\, Nancy Nishihira (西平・ナンシー)\, and Shigeki Shibata (柴田滋紀)\n\nCuration team: \nAllison Alexy\, Bradly Hammond\, Grace Mahoney\, and Alexandria Molinari

SUMMARY:Exhibition:UN/EARTH
DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

In our ever-changing\, complex\, and challenging world\, mindfulness can provide grounding. As one form of contemplative practice\, mindfulness meditation can offer a framework to support a more skillful approach to navigating the demands of being human and support practitioners to build resilience and take compassionate action.\n\nWhether you are new to mindfulness meditation or are an experienced practitioner\, each session is designed to offer guidance and support to assist you. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Undergraduate Gender Diversity and the Direction of Scientific Research
DESCRIPTION:Can diversity lead to greater research focus on populations underrepresented in science? Between 1960 and 1990\, 76 all-male US universities\, including many elite and prominent research institutions\, transitioned to coeducation. Using a generalized difference-in-differences design\, we find that the increase in undergraduate gender diversity led to a 42% increase in gender-related research publications. After coed- education\, universities hired more female faculty and researchers with prior interests in gender-related topics. In addition\, incumbent researchers\, who were mostly male\, shifted their research focus toward gender-related topics. The results support interaction with more diverse students and peers as the key underlying mechanisms.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:MIPSE Seminar | New Lens on the Frontier of Matter in Extreme Conditions
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: The study of matter under extreme conditions is a highly interdisciplinary subject with broad applications to materials science\, plasma physics\, geophysics and astrophysics. Understanding the processes which dictate physical properties in warm dense plasmas and condensed matter requires studies at the relevant length-scales (interatomic spacing) and time-scales (phonon period). Experiments performed at XFEL lightsources across the world\, combined with dynamic compression\, provide ever-improving spatial- and temporal-fidelity to push the frontier. This talk will cover a broad range of conditions\, intended to present an overview of important recent developments in how we generate extreme environments and how we characterize and probe matter at extremes conditions – providing an atom-eye view of transformations and the fundamental physics dictating plasma and materials properties. Examples closely related to geophysics\, astro(bio)physics\, planetary-\, and fusion energy-sciences\, as enabled by microstructure visualization from in situ\, ultrafast X-ray imaging\, diffraction and spectroscopy will be discussed.\n\nAbout the Speaker: Arianna Gleason received her PhD in Earth and Planetary Science from the University of California\, Berkeley in 2010. She joined Stanford University as a postdoctoral scholar in 2010 and worked for Los Alamos National Laboratory in the Shock and Detonation Physics group before joining SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory as a staff scientist in 2018. Her passion is visualizing materials behavior and response across all length-scales at the most extreme environments possible in nature – from planetary cores to stellar interiors or for fusion energy and novel materials design. This allows her to reveal nature’s secrets of high-pressure mineral physics and planetary evolution from the atomic level up. In 2019 she received the DOE’s Early Career Award from the Office of Science\, Fusion Energy Science\, and recently served on the FES Science Advisory Committee for Long Range Planning\, Basic Research Needs on Inertial Fusion Energy\, Accelerating Nuclear Innovations and International Benchmarking. She is currently the Deputy Director for the High Energy Density Science Division at SLAC and Adjunct Faculty in the Geoscience Department at Stanford University.\n\nThe seminar will be conducted in person and simulcast via Zoom: \nhttps://mipse.umich.edu/seminars_2223.php#winter2023

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Logic Seminar: Omega-categorical metric structures
DESCRIPTION:First\, I will briefly remind everyone about omega-categorical structures in the classical world. Currently\, my interests are related to some specific types of such structures\, so\, please\, expect a lot of examples and not so many formal definitions.\n\nSecondly\, I will try to introduce everyone to omega-categorical structures in the metric world. I am an absolute beginner here\, so\, again\, expect the prevalence of examples!\n\nNote for experts: Don't expect a lecture on different topologies in model theory\, I want to shortcut via metric Ryll-Nardzewski theorem.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:PROFESSOR HELMUT PUFF\, THE ELIZABETH L. EISENSTEIN COLLEGIATE PROFESSORSHIP IN HISTORY AND GERMANIC LANGUAGES AND LITERATURES\, INAUGURAL LECTURE
DESCRIPTION:Waiting is one temporal modality among others that makes time experiential. Waiting portions out the flow of time as waiters anticipate what is to come. Yet is there a history of waiting? This talk proposes to anchor such a history in the spaces where people waited\, especially the early modern antechamber. By doing so\, it draws attention to the significance of waiting and letting others wait when studying society and culture. \n\nIf you are unable to attend this lecture in person please see below.\n\nPlease click the link below to join the webinar:\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/99989750576\nOr One tap mobile : \n US: +16468769923\,\,99989750576# or +16469313860\,\,99989750576# \nOr Telephone:\n Dial(for higher quality\, dial a number based on your current location):\n US: +1 646 876 9923 or +1 646 931 3860 or +1 301 715 8592 or +1 305 224 1968 or +1 309 205 3325 or +1 312 626 6799 or +1 719 359 4580 or +1 253 205 0468 or +1 253 215 8782 or +1 346 248 7799 or +1 360 209 5623 or +1 386 347 5053 or +1 507 473 4847 or +1 564 217 2000 or +1 669 444 9171 or +1 669 900 6833 or +1 689 278 1000 \n Canada: +1 778 907 2071 or +1 780 666 0144 or +1 204 272 7920 or +1 438 809 7799 or +1 587 328 1099 or +1 647 374 4685 or +1 647 558 0588 \nWebinar ID: 999 8975 0576\n International numbers available: https://umich.zoom.us/u/ab9idD38x\n\nOr an H.323/SIP room system:\n H.323: \n 162.255.37.11 (US West)\n 162.255.36.11 (US East)\n 115.114.131.7 (India Mumbai)\n 115.114.115.7 (India Hyderabad)\n 213.19.144.110 (Amsterdam Netherlands)\n 213.244.140.110 (Germany)\n 103.122.166.55 (Australia Sydney)\n 103.122.167.55 (Australia Melbourne)\n 149.137.40.110 (Singapore)\n 64.211.144.160 (Brazil)\n 149.137.68.253 (Mexico)\n 69.174.57.160 (Canada Toronto)\n 65.39.152.160 (Canada Vancouver)\n 207.226.132.110 (Japan Tokyo)\n 149.137.24.110 (Japan Osaka)\n Meeting ID: 999 8975 0576\n SIP: 99989750576@zoomcrc.com

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Quantifying an impact of dimensional change in Stochastic portfolio theory
DESCRIPTION:In this paper\, we develop the theory of functional generation of portfolios in an equity market of a changing dimension. By introducing dimensional jumps in the market\, as well as jumps in stock capitalization between the dimensional jumps\, we construct different types of self-financing stock portfolios (additive\, multiplicative\, and rank-based) in the most general setting. Our study explains how a dimensional change caused by a listing or delisting event of a stock and unexpected shocks in the market affect portfolio return. We also provide empirical analyses of some classical portfolios\, quantifying the impact of dimensional change in relative portfolio performance with respect to the market.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Stage-Based Identification of Policy Effects
DESCRIPTION:We develop a method that identifies the effects of nationwide policy—i.e.\, implemented across all regions at the same time. In our method\, we put forward the idea of tracking outcome paths in terms of stages rather than time\, where a stage of a regional outcome at time t is its location on the support of a reference path. Through a normalization that maps the time paths of regional outcomes onto a reference path—using only pre-policy data\, we uncover cross-regional heterogeneity in the stage at which policy is implemented. This stage variation identifies policy effects inside a window of stages where a stage-leading region provides the no-policy counterfactual path for non-leading regions that are subject to policy inside that window. We assess our method’s performance with Monte-Carlo experiments\, and illustrate it with empirical applications. Our method captures heterogeneous policy effects across stages and the aggregate effects of policy.

SUMMARY:Performance:Bob Schneider
DESCRIPTION:An Ypsilanti-born Austin phenomenon\n\nAustin\, Texas–based singer-songwriter and former frontman of The Ugly Americans and The Scabs\, Bob Schneider has become one of the most celebrated musicians in the live music capital. Drawing from a range of diverse musical styles\, Bob's talent has defied genres. Combining elements of funk\, country\, rock\, and folk with the more traditional singer/songwriter aesthetic\, Schneider draws inspiration from the '70s with a modern twist\, reminiscent of contemporaries such as Beck. His catalog is both uplifting and sober\, unafraid to tackle powerful subjects like alienation\, drug addiction\, and lost romance in addition to celebrating life’s joys. Bob has won more than 59 Austin Music Awards\, including Best Album\, Best Songwriter\, Best Musician\, and Best Male Vocals\, making him the most decorated artist in Austin music history. He has released more than a dozen albums\, written over 1\,000 songs\, is a published author\, and is also an avid painter and collage artist—and doesn't plan on slowing down anytime soon. Bob returns to Michigan for his first Ark show in ten years with a new album\, “A Roomful of Blood with a Sleeping Tiger.”\n\nPlease visit https://mutotix.umich.edu/3825/3826 for more detail.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Humanize the Numbers
DESCRIPTION:Prison Creative Arts Project presents an exhibition of collaborative photography at the Detroit Historical Museum (5401 Woodward Ave. in Detroit)\, open now through May 21st.\n\nA public reception will be held on March 9th\, 6:00–9:00 PM\, with a panel of previous workshop participants at 7:00 PM.\n\nWe hope you will be able to see the exhibit\, and please be in touch if you have any questions.\n\nHumanize the Numbers shows the perspectives of men in Michigan prisons. The prison system regulates every part of an inmate's identity. Instead of using their name\, they are given an ID number. Visiting room photos and mug shots are tightly regulated. Personal info is recorded: height\, weight\, etc. In the process\, their humanity is denied.\n\nThis exhibit at the Detroit Historical Museum reveals the faces and stories of those in prison. It lifts up the voices of those who have been silenced by the criminal legal system. The Humanize the Numbers project gives them a freedom not normally allowed in prison. They share their stories with the world outside. By doing so\, those in prison reclaim their humanity.\n\nMuseum hours\nThursdays–Saturdays: 10:00 AM–5:00PM \nSundays: 1:00–5:00 PM

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:ChE SEMINAR: \"Insights into Battery Operation through X-ray Scattering\"
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nElectrochemical energy storage is an enabling technology as humanity transitions to a carbon neutral economy. While Li-ion batteries are presently the dominate technology\, a diversity of energy storage needs demands a diversity of storage technologies. My research group is focused on helping to enable these types of batteries through an understanding of their operation and degradation modes\, using operando X-ray based methodologies coupled to electrochemistry.\n\nIn this talk I will discuss several vignettes including (i) demonstrating the Na storage mechanisms and heterogeneous nanopore filling in hard-carbon anodes for Na-ion batteries\, (ii) presenting a novel pathway explaining self-discharge in Li-ion cathodes where hydrogenation of layered transition metal oxide induces self-discharge through hydrogen transfer from carbonate solvents to delithiated oxides\, (iii) determining that the degradation pathways in Li-ion batteries under extreme fast charging involved predominately heterogenous Li-metal plating in full cells. One focus of our research is on quantification of competing electrochemical processes as a way to guide implementation of methods to improve battery systems.\n\nBio:\nMike Toney is a professor of Chemical and Biological Engineering and the Materials Science and Engineering Program. His academic interests are on materials for sustainable energy with a focus on understanding the physics and chemistry that underlie the functioning of these materials\, especially for batteries\, photovoltaics and more recently clean water. His research involves characterization using various X-ray scattering\, spectroscopy and imaging methods with strong interest in interfaces and soft matter. Prior to coming to CU\, he worked at the IBM Almaden Research Center and the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. Mike’s goal includes strengthening the Front Range’s research and development in sustainable energy materials.

SUMMARY:Other:Atomic-scale Insights into Electrocatalyst Structure and Function
DESCRIPTION:The development of efficient renewable energy conversion and storage devices to curb climate change is one of the most important challenges of the 21st century. This can be addressed by using renewable electricity to manufacture chemical fuels and synthetic precursors\, or by generating electricity with carbon-neutral fuel cell devices. However\, electrocatalytic processes are hampered by low efficiencies and poor reaction selectivity because of a lack of rational methods available to create controllable catalyst materials with the preferred electrochemical activities. In this seminar Prof. Hall will discuss the use of ordered intermetallic compounds (OICs)\, which are alloys that display high electrocatalytic activities because their well-defined compositions and long-range atomic scale ordering enable predictable geometric and electronic interactions\, in contrast to the more widely studied solid-solution type alloys. However\, OIC materials are difficult to synthesize in nanomaterial form because conventional synthesis methods offer poor control over the composition\, phase\, and morphology. I will discuss our efforts on the synthesis\, stability\, and catalytic activity of OICs prepared by electrochemical methods at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. Our strategies include the use of electrochemically induced phase transformations which enables us to convert a base metal rich alloy to an OIC richer in nobler metal by removal of the base metal\, and the direct production of OIC materials by electrochemical deposition. We will also discuss how we leverage the atomically precise configuration of atoms within OICs to reveal detailed insights into how a material’s structure regulates its electrochemical properties. Developing new methods for preparing OIC compounds under ambient conditions is essential for designing catalysts for the next generation of renewable energy conversion devices \n \n \n \n \nShoji Hall (Johns Hopkins University)

SUMMARY:Performance:Where are all the Black people?: Gestures & Journeying
DESCRIPTION:This dance performance\, directed by graduate student Njeri Rutherford\, explores Black femininity\, liberation\, joy\, and healing. It confronts Black identity through dance and celebrates dance forms of the African Diaspora.\nThe event is held in partial fulfillment of the University of Michigan Master of Fine Arts in Dance degree requirements. Supported in part by the William Braddan McClellan\, Jr. Fund in Dance\, EXCEL Enterprise Fund\, and the U-M Dance Department.\nIn the United States\, ballet\, modern dance\, and post-modern/contemporary styles of dance dominate the professional concert dance industry. Concert dance is a form that has permeated through American culture for over a century and is regarded as “high” art within American society or art whose intention is to be consumed by the wealthy and socially elite. While cultural dance forms such as West African dance\, Jamaican dancehall\, Afro Cuban folkloric\, Haitian dance\, and others are prevalent in cultures in many African and Caribbean countries\, they are scarce in American concert dance where many descendants of those regions exist. “Gestures & Journeying” challenges these dance “norms” by centering the experiences of Black dancers and elevating the social perception of Black dance.
