SUMMARY:Exhibition:Humanize the Numbers
DESCRIPTION:Prison Creative Arts Project presents an exhibition of collaborative photography at the Detroit Historical Museum (5401 Woodward Ave. in Detroit)\, open now through May 21st.\n\nA public reception will be held on March 9th\, 6:00–9:00 PM\, with a panel of previous workshop participants at 7:00 PM.\n\nWe hope you will be able to see the exhibit\, and please be in touch if you have any questions.\n\nHumanize the Numbers shows the perspectives of men in Michigan prisons. The prison system regulates every part of an inmate's identity. Instead of using their name\, they are given an ID number. Visiting room photos and mug shots are tightly regulated. Personal info is recorded: height\, weight\, etc. In the process\, their humanity is denied.\n\nThis exhibit at the Detroit Historical Museum reveals the faces and stories of those in prison. It lifts up the voices of those who have been silenced by the criminal legal system. The Humanize the Numbers project gives them a freedom not normally allowed in prison. They share their stories with the world outside. By doing so\, those in prison reclaim their humanity.\n\nMuseum hours\nThursdays–Saturdays: 10:00 AM–5:00PM \nSundays: 1:00–5:00 PM

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Openings: Title Pages in the History of Printed Books
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit explores the creativity and utility of an essential part of practically every modern book\, the title page. Such pages signal and inform\, incite pleasure and intrigue\, as well as conceal and mislead. The works shown here from the holdings of the University of Michigan Library illuminate critical moments in the history of books. Students in a Fall 2022 History Lab class researched and created the exhibit.\n\nThe exhibit is available for viewing in the Special Collections Research Center (on the sixth floor of the Hatcher Library)\, Monday-Friday\, 10am-4:30pm.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Statistics Department Seminar Series: Purnamrita Sarkar\, Associate Professor\, Department of Statistics\, The University of Texas at Austin
DESCRIPTION:\"Some new results for streaming principal component analysis\"\n\nStreaming PCA\, also known as Oja's algorithm\, with roots going back to 1949\, has attracted much attention in Statistics and Computer Science in the last decade. In this talk\, I will discuss two of our works that address uncertainty estimation and data dependence\, which have been relatively underexplored in the past.\n\nFirst\, I will talk about the problem of quantifying uncertainty for the estimation error of the leading eigenvector using Oja's algorithm for streaming PCA\, where the data are generated IID from some unknown distribution. Combining classical tools from the U-statistics literature with recent results on high-dimensional central limit theorems for quadratic forms of random vectors and concentration of matrix products\, we establish a distributional approximation result for the error between the population eigenvector and the output of Oja's algorithm. We also propose an online multiplier bootstrap algorithm and establish conditions under which the bootstrap distribution is close to the corresponding sampling distribution with high probability.\n\nOur second work looks at dependent data streams. While streaming PCA is typically analyzed under the IID data model\, in many applications like distributed optimization\, data points are sampled from a Markov chain and therefore are dependent. I will show how the data dependence leads to difficulties in the theoretical analysis and present our finite sample convergence guarantees under standard assumptions on the underlying Markov chain.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:UN/EARTH
DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Department Colloquium
DESCRIPTION:Title: Descartes on Clarity and Reasons for Judgement and Doubt\n\nAbstract: Commentators increasingly recognize that\, for Descartes\, when you perceive something clearly and distinctly\, you thereby have a normative reason (not just a psychological compulsion) to judge it to be true. They haven’t been able to explain why\, however\, because they haven’t identified what clear and distinct perception is. I argue that distinctness is just the highest degree of clarity – complete clarity – and that clarity is presentationality\, i.e. the phenomenal quality you experience when something is presented to you as true. Anticipating a current view called Presentationalism\, Descartes holds that presentationality (clarity) provides reason for judgment: when you perceive p clearly\, you thereby have reason to judge that p is true\, precisely because p is presented to you as true. Today’s Presentationalists posit only defeasible reasons for judgement – ones that can be defeated by reasons for doubt. Descartes is bolder in asserting that the highest degree of clarity – complete clarity – provides\nindefeasible reasons for judgment – ones that preclude any possible reason for doubt. Why? The answer\, I argue\, flows from a unified account wherein all epistemic reasons – reasons for assent and reasons for doubt – arise from clarity.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture - Dr. Kurt Burmeister\, Sacramento State
DESCRIPTION:Field safety is a process and must be built around a systematic approach to identifying risk and using data to building appropriate prevention and mitigation strategies. Unfortunately\, many university programs are currently relying upon field safety approaches that are based on generic checklists and informed by anecdotal tall tales that derail efforts to support safe operations for students\, faculty\, and staff in uncontrolled environments. Indeed\, without a data-driven Field Safety Ratio comparing the actual range of risks effecting participants (based on incidents and near misses) and the amount of incident-free time spent in the field (total person hours)\, it is impossible to effectively prioritize resources and maximize safety. Together\, we will use scenario-based discussions to explore the process of data informed field safety within the context of building better understandings of (1) your program’s Spectrum of Liability\, (2) the real underlying reasons why accidents happen\, (3) what your Duty or Care actually is\, and (4) ways to kickstart safer operations with your students.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:WCED Lecture. Decentralized Resistance
DESCRIPTION:Both historically and today\, most acts of resistance to systems of power\, hierarchy\, and exploitation do not take the form of social movements with names\, official-holders\, flags\, rules of order\, headquarters\, and initials (e.g.\, NAACP\, ACLU\, BLM\, AfD). There are at least two reasons\, Scott proposes\, that help explain this fact. First\, historically open resistance for most of the world’s population\, living in undemocratic settings\, is dangerous\, even fatal. When it occurs\, it is an act of desperation. Second\, even in relatively permissive political settings\, the transaction costs of creating formal organizations are often so great that smaller\, informal\, and individual acts of resistance are simpler to pull off and often safer as well. The aggregation of thousands of such acts of resistance (e.g.\, desertion\, squatting\, poaching) may\, over time\, achieve more at a *de facto* level than open\, publicly-declared resistance.\n \nThis talk will examine what might be called “everyday resistance.” Scott will assess whether the term “resistance” even makes sense in this context\; will examine instances of it historically\; will consider both its objectives and the likelihood that they can be achieved in this manner\; and will ask what the consequences for political life and social organization such techniques imply.\n \nJames Scott is the Sterling Professor of Political Science and Professor of Anthropology at Yale University\, and is co-Director of Yale’s Agrarian Studies Program and a mediocre farmer. His research concerns political economy\, comparative agrarian societies\, theories of hegemony and resistance\, peasant politics\, revolution\, Southeast Asia\, theories of class relations\, and anarchism. He is the author of six books\, most recently *Against the Grain: A Deep History of the Earliest Agrarian States* (Yale Press\, 2017)\, *Two Cheers for Anarchism* (Princeton Press\, 2013)\, and *The Art of Not Being Governed: An Anarchist History of Upland Southeast Asia* (Yale Press\, 2008).\n\nThis lecture will be presented in person in 1010 Weiser Hall and on Zoom. Webinar registration required at http://myumi.ch/zwnWd\n\nCo-sponsored by the Conflict & Peace\, Research & Development (CPRD) Group\; Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS)\; and the Departments of Anthropology and Political Science.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at weisercenter@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Caroline Sinders: Intertwined Intimacy
DESCRIPTION:Intertwined Intimacy is a series of architectural sculptures ruminating on privacy and intimacy\, and how the infrastructure of visible and invisible spaces influences communities\, communications\, and safety. \nThis work stems from artist Caroline Sinders&#039\; previous work combining research driven art and human rights analysis that responds to current technology systems by focusing on how the design of &#039\;infrastructural&#039\; and &#039\;architectural&#039\; spaces\, both online and offline\, impacts safety. By focusing on prototypian futures\, Intertwined Intimacy observes impacts through public infrastructure\, and open\, digital commons inspired by mutual aid and open source technology. To generate this research\, Sinders analyzed how structures\, metaphors and engagements of privacy and security within technology impact mental models The sculptures create a labyrinth\, allowing for a space of reflection and consideration for the audience\, as the sculptures slowly become more and more opaque\, offering areas of hidden solitude and refuge.\nCaroline Sinders is the 2023 Roman J. Witt Artist in Residence. This annual international competition awards one residency per academic year to a visiting artist/designer who proposes to develop a new work in collaboration with members of the Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design and the University of Michigan community. Learn more about Sinders&#039\; residency and practice in this Q&amp\;A.\nSinders is an award winning critical designer\, researcher\, and artist. She is the founder of human rights and design lab\, Convocation Research + Design. For the past few years\, she has been examining the intersections of artificial intelligence\, intersectional justice\, systems design\, harm\, and politics in digital conversational spaces and technology platforms. She has worked with the Tate Exchange at the Tate Modern\, the United Nations\,the European Commission\, Ars Electronica\, the Harvard Kennedy School and others. Sinders is currently based between London\, UK and New Orleans\, USA.

SUMMARY:Performance:PUNCH LINE
DESCRIPTION:VIM VIGOR DANCE COMPANY\, with The Department of Dance at the University of Michigan School of Music\, Theatre & Dance\, presents PUNCH LINE\, with choreography by Shannon Gillen and Jason Reese C.\, in collaboration with Tzveta Kassabova.\nPUNCH LINE will be presented on Friday\, April 21\, 2023 and Saturday\, April 22\, 2023 at 8:00pm in the Arthur Miller Theatre\, 1226 Murfin Avenue\, Ann Arbor\, MI\, 48109. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Early Astronomy in the University of Michigan Collections
DESCRIPTION:Trace how astronomy was developed\, studied\, and disseminated through the centuries\, from 1500 BCE to the Renaissance. On display is material drawn from the University of Michigan collections dealing with the history of early astronomy: manuscripts\, early printed books\, and artifacts illustrating Mesopotamian\, Greek\, Islamic\, and Western European astronomy.\n\nThis exhibit and its permanent online counterpart (https://umlib.us/earlyastronomy) are part of the Aratus Project\, which was sponsored by the National Science Foundation and led by Prof. Francesca Schironi. The core of the project has been to study Aratus’ \"Phaenomena\,\" the most important poem on stars and constellations of the Graeco-Roman ancient world\, and its exegetical tradition. Read an annotated edition and English translation of \"Phaenomena\" and its commentaries (https://aratus.classics.lsa.umich.edu/). The physical and online exhibits place this research work within its later intellectual and historical context.\n\nCurated by: John Steele\, Professor of the History of the Exact Sciences in Antiquity\, Department of Egyptology and Assyriology\, Brown University\; Francesca Schironi\, U-M Professor of Classical Studies\; Evyn Kropf\, U-M Librarian for Middle Eastern & North African Studies\; Pablo Alvarez\, U-M Curator (Special Collections Research Center).\n\nCheck Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours: https://myumi.ch/2mx44

SUMMARY:Performance:Mr. B's Blues & Boogie Piano Celebration
DESCRIPTION:The top of the piano summit\n \nOnce a year\, Mark \"Mr. B\" Braun\, Ann Arbor's own wizard of blues and boogie piano music\, comes together with other top piano players from around southeastern Michigan and beyond. Call it a piano summit\, or perhaps a meeting of the minds! Audiences in southeastern Michigan tend to think of Mr. B as a local hero\, but in fact he's well known among fans and practitioners of blues and jazz piano music all over the country and around the world. In the past\, Mr. B's Piano Celebration concerts have brought great sets by otherwise hard-to-find performers from New Orleans\, New York\, and Europe\, and they're by no means confined to boogie and blues. Check this page for an updated listing of Mr. B's guests this year.\n\n\nPlease visit https://mutotix.umich.edu/3855/3856 for more detail.

SUMMARY:Performance:The Talbott Brothers
DESCRIPTION:“Haunting brotherly harmonies”—Billboard\n\nThe Talbott Brothers have earned a large and growing following for their songs consisting of down-to-earth messages that prove to be prevalent in today’s world. Originally from Imperial\, Nebraska\, they now call Portland\, Oregon home. Billboard defines their music as “captivating with haunting brotherly harmonies.” Acoustic Selections from Ghost Talker is an EP of stripped down songs hand selected from Ghost Talker\, the duo’s sophomore album. Rolling Stone named their latest single one of the ‘Top 10 Songs to Hear Now\,’ defining their music as “cinematic folk-rock for open highways\, widescreen skies and the limitless reach of the American Heartland.” We had The Talbott Brothers opening for Steven Page of Barenaked Ladies a few years back\, and we enjoyed them so much we wanted to hear their full show.\n\n\nPlease visit https://mutotix.umich.edu/3833/3834 for more detail.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:CCPS Exhibition. Survivors Saving Survivors: Photographing the Ukrainian Refugee Experience in Poland
DESCRIPTION:In April and June 2022\, at the invitation of JCC Krakow\, Chuck Fishman traveled to Poland to document the JCC and the Jewish community’s commitment to helping Ukrainian refugees fleeing their war-torn country. What he witnessed and captured in a series of gripping photographs is *tikkun olam*\, a central concept in Judaism that denotes activities that repair and improve the world we live in. The exhibit shifts the lens away from the horror the refugees have endured to focus instead on human goodness and how it can overcome lingering evil.\n\nIn his 45-year career\, freelance photographer Chuck Fishman has focused on social and political issues with a strong humanistic concern. His work on Jewish life in Poland\, begun in 1975\, continues to the present day. Fishman’s work has been extensively published\, exhibited\, and collected worldwide\, and has earned him prestigious World Press Photo Foundation medals four times. His photographs have appeared on the covers of *Time*\, *Life*\, *Fortune*\, *Newsweek*\, *The London Sunday Times*\, *The Economist*\, and numerous others. Fishman’s work is included in the collections of the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery\, the United Nations POLIN: The Museum of the History of Polish Jews\, and the Stanford University and New York Public Libraries\, to name a few\, as well as private and corporate collections.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at weisercenter@umich.edu. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:a way outta no way
DESCRIPTION:About the Exhibition\nAs part of the artist's vision for this project\, the installation will be activated on opening night with a collective response to the objects\, the space\, and the archives within. Facilitated by: Ricky Weaver\, Viktor Givens\, Bryce Detroit\, Andrew Wilson\, and Efe Bes.\n\nAbout the Artist\nRicky Weaver is an image-based artist\, theorist\, and mother\, born in Ypsilanti\, MI. Her art and theory are centered around the lexicon generated through black women's everyday practices\, dark sousveillance\, and images as objects that alchemize the archive on a quantum level. She is currently teaching at ArtCenter College of Art and Design in Pasadena\, CA as a fellow for the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design. Weaver is represented by David Klein Gallery and has shown work at Art Miami\, the Havana Biennale\, Sofa Expo\, and more. Her work has been acquired by institutions like the Wedge Collection and published in Aperture’s As We Rise: Photography from the Black Atlantic.\n\nWeaver was named one of LensCulture's Critics Choice Artists of 2020\, selected by Susan Thompson\, associate curator at the Guggenheim Museum. She also participated in the Independent Scholar Fellowship at The Carr Center where she was mentored by Carrie Mae Weems. She earned an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art and a BFA from Eastern Michigan University\, with a concentration in photography. \n\nWeaver recently presented a paper titled “How I Got Over: The Meta-Archive and other registers” at Black Portraitures VII hosted by Rutgers University. Most recently she has taken on the role of lead visual consultant\, specializing in image theory and photography\, for the Global Institute for Black Girls in Film and Media.\n\nThis project is made possible by a grant from the Mellon Foundation as part of the Institute for the Humanities' multi-year High Stakes Art initiative.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Portraits of Feminism in Japan
DESCRIPTION:What is feminism in Japan? Rather than imagining it as a singular\, coherent object\, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity\, difference\, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts\, “feminism” in Japan can invoke sharply different associations\, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority\, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters\, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families\, workplaces\, schools\, political institutions\, and laws\, among many other contexts. Many – but certainly not all – feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects\, working toward recognition\, repair\, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\n\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Created by nine contemporary artists in Japan and the United States\, the portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of \"feminism\" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences\, needs\, and activism within Japan. This exhibit also spotlights the history of Japanese studies at the University of Michigan in conjunction with the Center for Japanese Studies' 75th anniversary celebration. \n\n“Portraits of Feminism in Japan” is open for viewing M-F 9am-4pm or by appointment. University of Michigan instructors can email LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu to request a group tour or schedule a class visit.\n\nFeatured artists:\nElaine Cromie\, JenClare B. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Interdisciplinary Islamic Studies Seminar. Ethical Cosmology in Islamic Economic Thought
DESCRIPTION:Based on his two recent books\, *Ethical Teachings of Abu Hamid al-Ghazali *and *The Making of Islamic Economic Thought*\, in this presentation\, Sami Al-Daghistani analyzes the development and conceptual framework of economic thought in the Islamic tradition pertaining to ethical\, legal\, and philosophical ideas. While initially conceived as a “third-way economic system\,” the progenitors of modern Islamic economics have often been structurally and epistemically dependent on key conceptualizations in conventional economics and its worldview. Concomitantly\, the pre-modern scholarship nurtured complex attitudes toward economic life associated with the ethical self in that various legal scholars\, theologians\, and Sufis addressed earning a living and other economic postulates in the context of Sharī‘a law. He argues that classical Muslim scholars maintained a polyvalent understanding of economic thought as a human science based on virtuous traits of character and self-examination\, embedded in a particular cosmology of human relationality\, metaphysical intelligibility\, and economic subjectivity.

The momentum distributions of quarks and gluons in nucleons are encoded in parton distribution functions (PDFs). Extracting PDFs from experimental data relies on several assumptions\, and finding where these assumptions break down can reveal new insights about QCD in poorly understood regimes. In this talk\, I will present measurements by the LHCb collaboration that challenge some of these assumptions by probing the structure of nucleons in extreme conditions. I will present a study of Z-boson production in association with charm quarks that could point to a non-perturbative contribution to the charm quark PDF. I will also present studies of particle production in proton-lead collisions and discuss their implications for nuclear modifications of PDFs and QCD at high gluon densities.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:ISRMT Seminar - TT* - equations of Cecotti and Vafa\, Riemann-Hilbert method and Iwasawa factorization.
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, some interesting (we believe !) new features of the Riemann-Hilbert method of the asymptotic analysis of integrable systems will be discussed. These features have emerged during the study of the global solution of the tt* equations of Cecotti and Vafa which\nthe speaker has been pursuing\, for some time already\, together with M. Guest\nand Chang-Shou Lin. The method which we use in this study is based on a combination\nof the isomonodrtomy technique and Iwasawa factorization from the theory of loop groups.\nThis allows us to simplify significantly the asymptotic\nanalysis of the tt* equations and\, simultaneously\, to bring a new light on some aspects of\nthe well known relation between the Birkhoff-Grothendieck and Iwasawa factorizations.\nAnother important link - to a 1980 paper by I. Krichever on the nonlinear analog of the d'Alembert's\nformula\, will be also highlighted.\n \nThe talk represents an ongoing joint project of M. Guest and the speaker\, and it is dedicated\nto the memory of Igor Krichever with whom the project was started.\n\nA recording of the talk can be found at \nhttps://youtu.be/DEPsUV0sFwU

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:GLNT Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Title: Counting non-tempered automorphic forms using endoscopy\n\nAbstract: How many automorphic representations of level n have a specified local factor at the infinite places? When this local factor is a discrete series representation\, this question is asymptotically well-undersertood as n grows. Non-tempered local factors\, on the other hand\, violate the Ramanujan conjecture and should be very rare. We use the endoscopic classification for representations to quantify this rarity in the case of cohomological representations of unitary groups\, and discuss some applications to the growth of cohomology of Shimura varieties.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Meet the Authors: Rouge River Revived
DESCRIPTION:Are you interested in the efforts to restore and protect the Rouge River watershed? Join us for a Q&A discussion with John H. Hartig and Jim Graham\, editors of the recent book \"Rouge River Revived: How People Are Bringing Their River Back to Life\" on Monday\, April 24. After pollution from the Ford complex and neighboring factories literally caused the river to catch on fire in 1969\, community groups launched a Herculean effort to restore and protect the watershed. Today the Rouge stands as one of the most successful examples of urban river revival in the country. \n\nThis event will take place in Facebook Live and Zoom webinar. The recording will be shared afterwards.\n\nAbout the Authors:\nJohn H. Hartig serves as a Visiting Scholar at the University of Windsor’s Great Lakes Institute for Environmental Research\, as the Great Lakes Science-Policy Advisor to the International Association for Great Lakes Research\, and as a member of the Board of Directors of the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy.\n\nJim Graham is an award-winning journalist for the Detroit News and the former Executive Director of Friends of the Rouge.\n\nGet a copy of \"Rouge River Revived\" for only $14 and free shipping during the month of April.

Gawaran\, Takatoshi Hayashi\, ivokuma (いぼくま)\, Nami Kaneko (金子奈美)\, Kang Jungsook\, Lisa Taka Miyagi\, Nancy Nishihira (西平・ナンシー)\, and Shigeki Shibata (柴田滋紀)\n\nCuration team: \nAllison Alexy\, Bradly Hammond\, Grace Mahoney\, and Alexandria Molinari

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Online Arabic placement test_April 25\, 2023 (11am-2pm)
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the Arabic Placement Test\nAbout the test\nThe test is approximately two hours and a half in length\, and it is composed of three portions:\na. The writing portion is completed via Zoom and it is worth a total of 100 points.\nb. The reading portion is completed online through Canvas site\, and it is worth a total of 48 points.\nc. Right after finishing with the reading portion\, each student will have a follow-up interview with a proctor. The interviews last approximately 15 minutes and it is worth a total of 20 points.\nImportant: The interview portion will be weighted most heavily as it will be used to validate performance on the other portions. The final result/score/rating will thus be based on the student’s performance on the interview above all. Rating of performance on the writing or reading portions is secondary.\nHow is the result calculated?\nStudents who receive 60% or above will be placed in Arabic 401 and thus placed out of the language requirement.\nWhere can I view my results?\nPlacement results are posted within 7 business days after the test.\nYou will not be notified of your score automatically. You may view your placements via: Wolverine Access > Student Business > Academic Records > View Placement Exam Results.\nImportant information about the test\n* Please note that only students who are participating in the orientations are eligible to take the online placement test. If you are an existing UM student\, please sign up to take the in-person placement test. \n* Placements are valid for only one year. If you fail to register in the course that you are placed in\, you will be required to retake the test.\n* Retaking the placement test is only permitted after the placement results expire.\n* The test assesses students’ proficiency in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA)\, NOT colloquial Arabic.\n* If you speak an Arabic dialect but you do not know how to read or write or have little knowledge\, feel free to register in Arabic 101.\n* Students who know some Arabic because they came from an Arabic-speaking household or have studied Arabic before\, must take the Arabic proficiency test in order to determine their placement.\n* Students who have taken Arabic at other institutions and wish to continue their Arabic study at UM must take the placement test to determine their level. Credits for Arabic study undertaken at another institution prior to joining UM or in a summer program while attending UM\, transfer in as generic departmental credits and students must take the placement test to determine credit equivalencies to UM courses.\n* If you place in or beyond the 401 level\, you will have satisfied the LSA language requirement. \n* Students are encouraged to take a placement test as early as possible in their studies in order to determine the level they should enroll in\, or if they test out of the language requirement. This is extremely important to avoid delays in graduation and complications with placement.\n* Arabic 101\, 201\, 401\, 501 are offered ONLY in the Fall semester\, and Arabic 102\, 202\, 402\, 504 are ONLY offered in the Winter semester.\n* Arabic 103 (the equivalent of Arabic 101 &102\, combined)\, Arabic 203 (the equivalent of Arabic 201 & 202\, combined) are offered in the Spring-Summer term. \nAbout the UM Arabic program\nUM’s Arabic curriculum is a dual register curriculum in which students learn to speak and understand either the Egyptian dialect or the Levantine dialect (the dialect of Jordan\, Syria\, Palestine and Lebanon) in addition to learning to read and write and understand formal Arabic (fuSHa). Students starting to learn Arabic\, if they have no background in Arabic\, can choose to take either dialect or can switch their dialect focus from one semester to the next. The dialect focus of each class section is indicated in the schedule of classes.\nIf you have questions regarding the placement test\, please contact the program director at\, mesarabicprogram@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Other:New Insights into Iron Transport in Mycobacterium tuberculosis and beyond
DESCRIPTION:The highly contagious disease tuberculosis (TB) is caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb)\, which has been evolving drug resistance at an alarming rate due to the harsh\, long drug treatments. Like all human pathogens\, iron is essential for Mtb’s survival and virulence. Consequently\, Mtb iron transport is an emerging drug target. However\, the development of anti-TB drugs aimed at these metabolic pathways have been restricted by the dearth of information on Mtb iron acquisition. Mtb has multiple strategies utilized to acquire ferric iron and heme-iron. Mtb iron uptake is a complex process requiring biosynthesis and subsequent export of Mtb siderophores\, followed by ferric iron scavenging and ferric-siderophore import into Mtb. Additionally\, Mtb uptakes heme and has a Mtb-specific mechanism of heme degradation that yields iron and novel heme-degradation products. Here we present several aspects of these pathways to close the knowledge gaps of iron acquisition in mycobacteria. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \nCelia Goulding (University of California\, Irvine)
