SUMMARY:Exhibition:Humanize the Numbers
DESCRIPTION:Prison Creative Arts Project presents an exhibition of collaborative photography at the Detroit Historical Museum (5401 Woodward Ave. in Detroit)\, open now through May 21st.\n\nA public reception will be held on March 9th\, 6:00–9:00 PM\, with a panel of previous workshop participants at 7:00 PM.\n\nWe hope you will be able to see the exhibit\, and please be in touch if you have any questions.\n\nHumanize the Numbers shows the perspectives of men in Michigan prisons. The prison system regulates every part of an inmate's identity. Instead of using their name\, they are given an ID number. Visiting room photos and mug shots are tightly regulated. Personal info is recorded: height\, weight\, etc. In the process\, their humanity is denied.\n\nThis exhibit at the Detroit Historical Museum reveals the faces and stories of those in prison. It lifts up the voices of those who have been silenced by the criminal legal system. The Humanize the Numbers project gives them a freedom not normally allowed in prison. They share their stories with the world outside. By doing so\, those in prison reclaim their humanity.\n\nMuseum hours\nThursdays–Saturdays: 10:00 AM–5:00PM \nSundays: 1:00–5:00 PM

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Openings: Title Pages in the History of Printed Books
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit explores the creativity and utility of an essential part of practically every modern book\, the title page. Such pages signal and inform\, incite pleasure and intrigue\, as well as conceal and mislead. The works shown here from the holdings of the University of Michigan Library illuminate critical moments in the history of books. Students in a Fall 2022 History Lab class researched and created the exhibit.\n\nThe exhibit is available for viewing in the Special Collections Research Center (on the sixth floor of the Hatcher Library)\, Monday-Friday\, 10am-4:30pm.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Sense of Self: The Islamic Contemporary
DESCRIPTION:Despite recent panels and scholarship aiming to dispel the notion\, there is a conception that contemporary art and religion are incompatible. \n\nWhen paired with the Islamophobic sentiment that Islam is destructive\, rather than constructive like artistic practices and that it even forbids many forms of artistic production\, there is a presumption that contemporary art that engages with Islam as religion and faith (rather than simply as identity) cannot exist. \n\nThere is an additional assumption that those who identify as women\, queer\, trans\, and non-binary are unlikely to engage with Islam in their work outside of critique\, because of the belief that Islam is inherently (and uniquely) oppressive of and therefore contradictory to individuals who identify as such. \n\nIn an attempt to disabuse viewers of these notions\, as well as give a space of exploration to these often overlooked or excluded voices\, this exhibition brings together women\, queer\, trans\, and non-binary Muslim artists who explore their connection to religion\, their other identities (be those related to their race\, ethnicity\, gender\, sexuality\, or status as artists)\, and their practices.\n\nParticipating Artists:\nNour Ballout\nYasmine Diaz\nArshia Fatima Haq\nYasmine Kasem\nManal Shoukair\nSaba Taj

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Statistics Department Seminar Series: Richard Samworth\, Professor of Statistical Science\, Director of Statistical Laboratory\, University of Cambridge
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: In clinical trials and other applications\, we often see regions of the feature space that appear to exhibit interesting behaviour\, but these observed phenomena may not reflected at the population level. Focusing on a regression setting\, we consider the subgroup selection challenge of identifying a region of the feature space on which the regression function exceeds a pre-determined threshold. We formulate the problem as one of constrained optimisation\, where we seek a low-complexity\, data-dependent selection set on which\, with a guaranteed probability\, the regression function is uniformly at least as large as the threshold\; subject to this constraint\, we would like the region to contain as much mass under the marginal feature distribution as possible. This leads to a natural notion of regret\, and we determine the minimax optimal rate for this regret in both the sample size and the Type I error probability. The rate involves a delicate interplay between the different problem parameters. Finally\, we expand the scope of our previous results by illustrating how they may be generalised to a treatment and control setting\, where interest lies in the heterogeneous treatment effect.\n\nhttps://www.statslab.cam.ac.uk/~rjs57/

SUMMARY:Exhibition:UN/EARTH
DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CSEAS Lecture Series. History in Ruins: Keramat and Stories of Singapore Islam
DESCRIPTION:This paper studies oral and textual traditions concerning select Islamic miracle workers (*keramat*) of Singapore. Materials about *keramat* are richly informative about charismatic religious authority\, the materiality of miracles\, and the saintly mediation of societies\, trade\, and politics. The history of Singapore’s *keramat* and devotional communities is one interwoven with histories of the Indian Ocean\, maritime Sufism\, capitalism\, colonialism\, and post-colonial bureaucracy. The story of *keramat* and Islamic pasts and presents\, moreover\, is one learned from sacred places and ruins as well as from the caretakers\, storytellers\, and historians from within devotional communities. Biographies and miracle stories of *keramat* also illuminate the networks of storytellers and scholars involved in compiling chapters of Singapore’s Islamic history\, who affirmed the oceanic reach of *keramat* as pivots of widespread networks connecting the eastern and western Islamic world. Keramat were abundant in nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Singapore\; this paper will focus on some of God’s \"friends” in the port city.\n\nSpeaker Bio\nTeren Sevea is the Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Assistant Professor of Islamic Studies at Harvard Divinity School. He is a scholar of Islam and Muslim societies in South and Southeast Asia and the author of *Miracles and Material Life: Rice\, Ore\, Traps and Guns in Islamic Malaya*. He is also the co-editor of a volume entitled *Islamic Connections: Muslim Societies in South and Southeast Asia\,* and author of numerous articles on Islamic textual traditions\, Sufism\, oceanic networks\, and spirituality. He is currently working on a forthcoming book entitled *Singapore Islam: The Prophet's Port and Sufism across the Oceans*.\n\nRegister here: http://myumi.ch/DJdyj\n---\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact cseas@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Finding Hunter-Gatherers in Chachapoyas\, Peru
DESCRIPTION:Hunter-gatherer archaeological sites are virtually unknown from the Peruvian eastern Andes\, the cloud-shrouded slopes which form the intersection of the Andean puna and Amazonian rainforest. Yet these landscapes have long been recognized as key to understanding topics from the human colonization of South America through the development of the central Andes' distinct agricultural complex. In this talk\, doctoral candidate Lauren Pratt will present preliminary results from her dissertation field season in Chachapoyas\, a region of the eastern Andes of northern Peru. In 2022-23\, she and her team conducted test excavations at six caves and rockshelters in the Leymebamba and Uchucmarca valleys\, identifying archaeological remains spanning from the Pre-Ceramic through the Late Intermediate Period. Results from these sites tell a previously unknown story of deep history in the Eastern Andes.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Nobody likes you when you’re 23: Our quest to understand age metastereotyping
DESCRIPTION:Today’s workforce has a broader age range but less stratification by age than in the past – this leaves us more likely to interact with coworkers\, supervisors\, mentors\, and direct reports who may not fit into our normative expectations for what is age appropriate. Moreover\, we are bombarded with cultural messages about the supposed values\, characteristics\, attitudes\, and desires of members of generations\, making salient age-related stereotypes and potentially false expectations. Stereotyping has been the major explanatory process in age-related discrimination and mistreatment at work\, but we are just recently starting to include a focus on the role of the age metastereotyping process to better understand interage interactions. In this talk Dr. Finkelstein will describe her past\, current\, and future work on age metastereotyping in the workplace.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:A Conversation with Author Putsata Reang
DESCRIPTION:\"Ma and Me: A Memoir\" can be described as an excellent interwoven story of the refugee experience\, involving the Americanization of immigrant children\, tension and drama between mother and daughter’s cultural expectations\, the lingering effects of war\, and the pursuit of the American dream. With a journalist’s eye and a creative writer’s heart\, Cambodian-American journalist Putsata Reang has crafted a memorable narrative with poignant lines\, rare clarity\, and lyrical wisdom. Her story reflects the long legacy of inherited trauma\, as well as the crushing weight of cultural and filial duty carried by many immigrants and refugees as they navigate transnational\, first-gen\, queer\, and ethnic and racial identities in the US. \n\n\nPlease join us for this conversation with Putsata Reang in the Helmut Stern Auditorium/UMMA on Friday\, Mar 24\, 2023.\nTime: 2:00 - 4:00 PM \nDoor opens:1:30 PM\nBook Signing: 3:30 PM\n\nThis event is open to all U-M community members and registration is required. The first 50 people who register and show up to attend the event will receive a free copy of the book at the sign-in on the day of the event with the presence of UMID. \n\nThis event is coordinated by the Office of Multi-Ethnic Student Affairs and co-sponsored by The Spectrum Center\, The University of Michigan Museum of Art\, The Trotter Multicultural Center\, and The First-Generation Initiatives. \n\nIf you have any questions\, please contact MESA at mesa.uofm@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:MESA: A Conversation with Author Putsata Reang. Ma and Me: A Memoir
DESCRIPTION:Ma and Me: A Memoir can be described as an excellent interwoven story of the refugee experience\, the Americanization of immigrant children\, tension and drama between mother and daughter’s cultural expectations\, the lingering effects of war\, and the pursuit of the American dream. With a journalist’s eye and a creative writer’s heart\, Cambodian-American journalist Putsata Reang has crafted a memorable narative with poignant lines\, rare clarity\, and lyrical wisdom. Her story reflects the long legacy of inherited trauma\, as well as the crushing weight of cultural and filial duty carried by many immigrants and refugees as they navigate transnational\, first-gen\, queer\, and ethnic and racial identities in the US. \n\n\nPlease join us for this conversation with Putsata Reang in the Helmut Stern Auditorium\, UMMA on Friday\, Mar 24\, 2023.\nTime: 2:00 - 4:00 PM (Door opens at 1:30 PM and Book Signing is at 3:30 PM)\nThis event is open to all UofM community members and registration is required. The first 50 people who register and show up to attend the event will receive a free copy of the book at the sign-in on the day of the event with the presence of UMID. \nThis event is coordinated by the Office of Multi-Ethnic Student Affairs and co-sponsored by The Spectrum Center\, The University of Michigan Museum of Art\, The Trotter Multicultural Center\, and The First-Generation Initiatives. \nIf you have any questions\, please contact MESA at mesa.uofm@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Zero Waste Week: Waste Justice Panel
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a panel discussion of waste colonialism and justice in the linear economy.\nThis panel discussion will engage with the broad idea that our linear economies\, in which items are produced\, sold\, used\, and thrown away\, are not only harmful to our ecosystems but to the communities (humans and non-humans) who live\, work\, play\, and pray in these very same ecosystems. A key example of such dynamics is that every part of the process of making\, consuming and disposing of single-use plastics is harmful to our people and to our planet. From the pipeline fracking needed to produce the raw oil to make plastics\, to its transport to oil refineries\, in cities like Detroit\, and to petrochemical facilities\, in cities like Houston\, TX and St. James\, LA\, to its disposal in landfills\, incinerators\, and in low-income and BIPOC communities’ backyards in the Global North and South\, the toxic impacts of our single-use plastic economies cannot be denied.\nIt is those very same communities\, who are at the forefront of our unjust waste producing systems\, who are also at the forefront of building equitable and just alternatives to these systems. The alternatives and solutions include anti-incineration struggles\; community-based recycling and composting programs\, food and secondhand goods redistribution services\, sharing economies\, and mutual aid networks\; human rights campaigns to advocate for the rights of waste pickers and of families to safe working conditions and environments\; the passing of progressive policies\, like single-use plastic bans\, to hold corporate actors accountable\; and the list goes on.\nThe panelists\, who will be speaking about their work at this event\, emerge from numerous fields\, such as community composting and recycling\, social services\, global policy organizing\, and are integral to our waste justice movements. We hope that by the end of the event\, attendees will walk away feeling more confident about answering the following questions for themselves:\nWhat does waste justice look like on the ground in Detroit and other parts of the world?\nHow should zero waste strategies be integral to our climate action strategies?\nHow can I support these efforts and stay connected to them?

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Algorithmic Mechanism Design with Investment
DESCRIPTION:We study the investment incentives created by truthful mechanisms that allocate resources using approximation algorithms. Some approximation algorithms guarantee nearly 100% of the optimal welfare\, but have only a zero guarantee when one bidder can invest before participating. An algorithm’s worst-case allocative and investment guarantees coincide if and only if that algorithm’s confirming negative externalities are sufficiently small. We introduce new fast approximation algorithms for the knapsack problem that have no confirming negative externalities\, with guarantees close to 100% both with and without investments.

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:11th Annual Marshall M. Weinberg Symposium
DESCRIPTION:The 11th anniversary Marshall M. Weinberg Symposium will take place at the Michigan League Ballroom and via Zoom on Friday\, March 24 and Saturday\, March 25\, 2023. The theme of the symposium is \"Computational Psychiatry: From Mental Circuits to Mental Illness.\"\n\nPsychiatry has long emphasized lists of signs and symptoms for categorizing\, diagnosing\, and treating mental disorders. However\, the inner workings of the mind/brain that produce and explain these signs and symptoms have remained obscure. The 2023 Weinberg Symposium examines “Computational Psychiatry”\, an upstart field that aims to revolutionize psychiatry by addressing this gap. Theorists in this new field build computational models that explain in a step-by-step way how the mind/brain performs key mental functions\, and they then demonstrate how signs and symptoms of mental disorders arise from altered “parameter settings” of these models. The Symposium features five leading theorists in computational psychiatry who will present their latest research on topics including delusional belief in schizophrenia and negativity bias in depressive disorders. The Symposium offers a chance to hear about the promise (as well as the pitfalls) of computational psychiatry—a field that has the potential to transform the way we understand mental illness. \n______________________________________________\n\nFriday\, March 24th\n3:00-4:00 pm Keynote\n Prediction\, Perception and Unshared Realities:\n Understanding Psychosis Through Computational Psychiatry\n Paul Fletcher (Cambridge)\n\n4:00-5:00 pm Reception\n\n\nSaturday\, March 25th\n9:50-10:00 am Opening Remarks\n\n10:00-10:50 am Ten Years of Bayesian Theories of Autism: What Have We Learned?\n Peggy Seriès (University of Edinburgh)\n\n11:00-11:50 am Emotions as Computations\n Eran Eldar (Hebrew University)\n\n12:00-1:20 pm Lunch\n\n1:30-2:20 pm A Social Neuroscience Approach Towards Computational Psychiatry\n Xiaosi Gu (Mt. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Combinatorics Seminar -- Top layers of Grothendieck and Lascoux polynomials
DESCRIPTION:The Schubert polynomials of the Symmetric group of n form a basis of the vector space they span. This space is well-studied with a dimension of n! and its Hilbert series being the q-analogue of n!. Key polynomials\, which are characters of the Demazure modules\, also form a basis for this space along with Schubert polynomials. Schubert and key polynomials are the ``bottom layers’’ of Grothendieck and Lascoux polynomials\, respectively\, which are two inhomogeneous polynomials. In this talk\, we will focus on the space spanned by their ``top layers’’. We construct two bases using the top layer of Grothendieck and the top layer of Lascoux. We will also introduce a diagrammatic method to compute the degrees of these polynomials\, involving drawing dark clouds and snowflakes. Finally\, we will describe the Hilbert series of this space using a classical q-analogue of the Bell numbers.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Seminar | Evolution of Self-Interacting Dark Matter Halos
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Large self interactions between dark matter particles alter the predicted properties of dark matter halos and may help address small-scale structure issues\, while maintaining the successes of standard cold dark matter at large scales. Self interactions allow for efficient heat transfer within a halo\, which can be modeled using a gravothermal fluid approximation. In this talk\, I will discuss how the choice of the particle physics model for self interactions\, as well as the environment of the halo\, impacts the phases of halo evolution.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Hodge-Tate decomposition for abelian varieties with good reduction
DESCRIPTION:The Hodge-Tate decomposition for an abelian variety is a p-adic analogue of the Hodge decomposition of a complex algebraic variety which allows us to relate the étale cohomology of a variety to its Hodge cohomology groups. In this talk\, we sketch a proof of this decomposition for H^1 of an abelian variety over a p-adic field with good reduction. The only prerequisites are the basic facts about p-adic fields and abelian varieties.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture - Dr. Edem Mahu\, University of Ghana (Remote)
DESCRIPTION:The West African Mangrove oyster (Crassostrea tulipa) is a tropical oyster found in estuaries along the West and Central coast of Africa from Senegal to Angola. The growth\, reproduction and survival of the oyster is dependent on prevailing environmental conditions (i.e\, salinity\, temperature\, and pH) of its habitat. Globally\, 85% of oyster reefs have been lost over the last few decades\, while the landings of the C. tulipa have reduced about three-folds since the last 75 years. The decline is mainly attributed to a number of human-induced stressors including overfishing and harmful harvesting practices\, water quality degradation\, climate change\, mangrove\, degradation and disease outbreaks. To understand how C. tulipa fishery has changed in response to these stressors\, our study used stable isotope composition of shells excavated across the equatorial coast West Africa to constrain past salinity regime of the oyster. We further assessed pre- historic against growth performance of the C. tulipa within the sub-region to inform a sustainable management of its fishery. Results show decline in salinity regimes\, size\, and growth rate in modern-day shells relative to pre-historic shells.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Hello\, My Name Is... Name Change Clinic
DESCRIPTION:Registration not required!\n\nJoin the Jim Toy Community Center's OUTreach and the Outlaws at the University of Michigan for a free clinic dedicated to addressing the challenges of name changes for transgender and gender nonconforming people.\n\nThey will provide details on how to legally change your name and gender marker in the state of Michigan. Information on how to update your Social Security\, Passport\, Driver’s License\, and Birth Certificate will also be available. Legal volunteers will be on-site after the presentation to answer questions and assist with forms. Finger-printing services will be available on site with no fee. If you would like to take advantage of the finger printing services\, please bring a government-issued photo ID.\n\nPLEASE NOTE: There will be an officer from the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office to offer fingerprinting at the event. This is a necessary step in the process for adults 22 or older\, and providing the officer in this space skips the need to go to the Sheriff's Office directly and individually.\n\nSpectrum Center Event Accessibility Statement:\nThe Spectrum Center is dedicated to working towards offering equitable access to all of the events we organize. If you have an accessibility need you feel may not be automatically met at this event\, there is space to report that in the registration\, or you can fill out our Event Accessibility Form\, found at http://bit.ly/SCaccess. You do not need to have a registered disability with the Office of Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) or identify as disabled to submit. Advance notice is necessary for some accommodations to be fully implemented\, and we will always attempt to dismantle barriers as they are brought up to us. Any questions about accessibility at Spectrum Center events can be directed to spectrumcenter@umich.edu.

SUMMARY:Film Screening:CREES-sponsored film at the 61st Ann Arbor Film Festival. \"Dor\" (Longing)
DESCRIPTION:53 min.\, 2021\, Bistrita\, Romania\n \n A cinematic and existential encounter between Belgian-Romanian Stefan Gota and a group of young shepherds. Gota returns to his native Romania to make a fresh start as a shepherd. Jannes Callens’s film moves at the same pace as a pasture crossing\, between expedition\, pause\, and contemplation. Striking images of this profession merge with existential considerations. How can you guide a flock when you’re a little lost yourself?\n \n Use our code AAFF61_UMREEEA for a discount on your tickets! The film will also be available March 21-29 for online viewing.\n \n Visit the Ann Arbor Film Festival website for the full schedule and information about special events: www.aafilmfest.org

SUMMARY:Meeting:Vision 2034: Town Halls
DESCRIPTION:The University of Michigan is engaging in a collective strategic visioning process to imagine our shared future for the next 10 years — our Vision 2034. The active participation of U-M students\, faculty\, staff\, alumni and partners will be vital to the initiative’s success. Join us as we embark on this historic journey. \n\nThe collective visioning process for Vision 2034 will occur throughout 2023 alongside other important U-M efforts\, including Campus Planning — which will explore how the physical campus must evolve to support the future of U-M. It will build upon the insights and lessons learned from other ongoing university engagement efforts including Bold Challenges\, Bold Ideas\, Culture Journey\, as well as planning for Diversity\, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) 2.0. In addition\, Vision 2034 will incorporate the strategic planning efforts occurring across the institution — including at UM–Dearborn\, UM-Flint\, and Michigan Medicine. It also will be informed by the 2023 U-M Audience Research Project findings\, expected soon.\n\nOur primary objectives are to:\n\n• Engage the university community at large in crafting a compelling vision for our shared future\, grounded in our mission and values. Learn how to get involved.\n\n• Generate big ideas through town halls\, surveys\, focus groups and other forums.\n\n• Incorporate key themes from recent campus-wide engagement efforts and other planning initiatives to inform the vision.\n\n• Deliver a shared vision for charting the path of the university into the next 10 years.\n\n• Enable university leadership to establish mechanisms to measure progress toward our vision over time.\n\nThe sessions available in this track offer multiple opportunities for feedback and idea contribution through a Town Hall format. A variety of audience groups & organizations will also participate through invite-only focus groups (not listed here).\n\nPlease note: Registration for events is currently limited to U-M faculty\, staff\, and students. If you do not see an event for your U-M affiliation\, please check back at a later time. Additional engagement opportunities will be continuously added.

After gaining popularity as a TV Celebrity\, Hatem finds himself in a web of political discord that tests his credibility and convictions. Hatem deals with the pressure of concealing what he really thinks about religious issues\, especially under the restrictions imposed by state security.\n\nFilm Background & Facts:\nAdapted from a novel by prominent journalist Ibrahim Eissa\, *Mawlana* (“The Preacher”) tells the story of a popular television preacher who struggles to reconcile his religious principles with demands and pressures from politicians and security agencies\, as well as ordinary human temptations. Because of its portrayal of the complex relationship between clerics and the government\, this film has provoked a lot of backlash from Sunni Muslim leaders\, with some calling for the film to be banned.\n__________________\nThis African Muslim Film Festival is brought to you by the Global Islamic Studies Center and cosponsored by the African Studies Center\, Arab and Muslim American Studies\, the Center for Middle East and North African Studies\, Digital Islamic Studies Curriculum\, the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies\, the Department of Film\, Television\, and Media\, the Department of Middle Eastern Studies\, the Department of Political Science\, and the Sawyer Seminar on the Africana Muslim and Genealogies of White Supremacy.\n\n\nVisit http://watch.eventive.org/amff for more details.\n\nWant to hear about similar events from U-M Islamic Studies? SUMMARY:Exhibition:Early Astronomy in the University of Michigan Collections
DESCRIPTION:Trace how astronomy was developed\, studied\, and disseminated through the centuries\, from 1500 BCE to the Renaissance. On display is material drawn from the University of Michigan collections dealing with the history of early astronomy: manuscripts\, early printed books\, and artifacts illustrating Mesopotamian\, Greek\, Islamic\, and Western European astronomy.\n\nThis exhibit and its permanent online counterpart (https://umlib.us/earlyastronomy) are part of the Aratus Project\, which was sponsored by the National Science Foundation and led by Prof. Francesca Schironi. The core of the project has been to study Aratus’ \"Phaenomena\,\" the most important poem on stars and constellations of the Graeco-Roman ancient world\, and its exegetical tradition. Read an annotated edition and English translation of \"Phaenomena\" and its commentaries (https://aratus.classics.lsa.umich.edu/). The physical and online exhibits place this research work within its later intellectual and historical context.\n\nCurated by: John Steele\, Professor of the History of the Exact Sciences in Antiquity\, Department of Egyptology and Assyriology\, Brown University\; Francesca Schironi\, U-M Professor of Classical Studies\; Evyn Kropf\, U-M Librarian for Middle Eastern & North African Studies\; Pablo Alvarez\, U-M Curator (Special Collections Research Center).\n\nCheck Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours: https://myumi.ch/2mx44

SUMMARY:Performance:Peter Mulvey
DESCRIPTION:Our 2023 Folk Festival MCs return\n\nTo call Peter Mulvey an acoustic singer-songwriter and guitarist just doesn't cover it. He's equally—and tremendously on all counts—gifted as a singer\, writer\, and guitarist. Says the Irish Examiner: \"Peter Mulvey is one of the most accomplished guitarists you're ever likely to hear … utterly original … it is nigh on impossible to explain him to the uninitiated … his intelligent and sometimes complex songs engage both hemispheres of the listener's brain.\" Peter grew up in Milwaukee\, made his debut on the streets of Dublin\, and moved to Boston\, performing in subways and finally clubs. He has released 18 albums\, and each one brings something new.\n \nLately Peter has been joined in shows by the Milwaukee-based sister duo SistaStrings\, who combine their classical background with R&B and a touch of gospel influence that culminates for a vibey\, lush sound. The Peter Mulvey–SistaStrings pairing has toured recently with Ani DiFranco. With thick\, string harmonies between violin and cello and soulful voices\, SistaStrings takes you on a journey. Formed in 2014 after Chauntee and Monique graduated from the University of Wisconsin–Madison\, the sisters began doing string arrangements for local hip-hop artists\, and the rest is history. SistaStrings has performed at Carnegie Hall and with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and the Madison Symphony Orchestra\, with Malik Yusef\, and they have opened for Black Violin\, Bone Thugs 'N Harmony\, Lupe Fiasco\, BJ The Chicago Kid\, and The Roots\; and they have toured with Brandi Carlile and Allison Russell. Outside of playing music venues\, SistaStrings goes into schools and conducts assemblies\, encouraging young people to pursue the arts and to not be afraid of hard work.\n\nPlease visit https://mutotix.umich.edu/3839/3840 for more detail.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:The Premodern Colloquium. Maroon Assemblages: Mexico\, from the 21st to the 18th Century.
DESCRIPTION:This is a draft chapter from my book\, Maroon Assemblages: Mexico\, 21st to 17th centuries. The book charts the traces of fugitivity in the eastern jurisdictions of New Spain beginning in the 17th century through to its absences in present-day Amapa\, a Oaxacan pueblo that was founded during Mexico’s colonial occupation by Black fugitives who fled sugar haciendas located in the southeastern provinces. The book approaches the practice of colonial fugitivity through Deleuze and Guattari’s concept of the assemblage\, bringing it into focus as shifting constellations of racialized peoples\, geographies\, discourses\, archives and political projects that crystallize and disperse at different moments in time. I track these constellations across multiple archives—archaeological materials\, historical documents\, contemporary landscapes\, and oral histories. Specifically\, this chapter interrogates an image that troubles the legal archives in colonial Mexico—the category of negro cimarrón\, or Black maroon—and situates it within a history of Spanish colonial epistemologies\, discursive processes\, and material practices.\n\nThis chapter 1) tracks the fractured process of creating a maroon archive\, that is\, the physical consignation of documents that repeated and reproduced ‘the question of maroons’\; 2) it considers how the colonial category 'maroon' both configured the lived subjectivities of those conscripted into it and how those subjects exceeded it\; and 3) it examines maroon durations. By the mid 18th-century\, when Spanish colonial officials began to systematically gather sources on maroons\, they had already been a centuries-old problem. These archived images\, then\, folded time\, as documents recorded various processes with different material durations such as the fugitive practices of maroons\, fluctuating political conditions in New Spain\, and colonial ‘problem spaces’ that had outlived their political presents.
