He plays traditional Irish guitar\, mandolin\, and bouzouki. He will back up Tadhg in traditional sessions as well as play a set of his own original music. He also has an extensive repertoire of Irish ballads and songs\, and is a gifted singer\, and will sing a few during the trad session. He is also an intermediate-level Irish language speaker. \n\nBen Duffy is a drummer\, singer and songwriter from Trim\, County Meath. For Black women in particular\, hair has and continues to be tied to ethnic identity and a history of self-determination\, social justice\, and survival. Thus\, chemotherapy-induced hair loss is a devastating event for Black patients who are also more likely to be diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer subtypes necessitating chemotherapy\, carrying a 40% increased risk of dying from breast cancer.\n\nRedefining the ‘crown’: Approaching chemotherapy-induced alopecia among Black patients with breast cancer” started as a manuscript published in the scientific journal Cancer. But the work could not stop there. “Redefining the Crown” then metamorphosed into a photo essay project aimed at exploring the breast cancer journeys of six Black women and their experiences with hair loss due to chemotherapy. Though the project centers the experience of Black women\, we also acknowledge that breast cancer and chemotherapy-induced alopecia impact individuals of all genders. While the goal is to illuminate the unique stories of Black women who are affected uncommonly by this common disease\, the project is also a call to action regarding the disproportionate breast cancer-related mortality facing Black communities.\n\nIn this portraiture series\, photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks. This exhibition examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy and how their sense of cultural pride and personal identity have been redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThese survivors have redefined their own crowns. By portraying these self-employed individuals\, often operating within informal economies\, Galbreath draws attention to the unique challenges they face. These individuals frequently contend with low\, inconsistent incomes\, long hours\, and sometimes exploitative conditions\, fostering a sense of solidarity with those who labor under such circumstances.\n\nFurthermore\, the series invites viewers to confront the broader societal structures that contribute to these inequities. TDP-43 is a nuclear RNA binding protein responsible for RNA metabolism with its most notable role being splicing of RNA. TDP-43 pathology is defined by nuclear clearance known as a loss-of-function and cytoplasmic aggregation\, a gain-of-function. Loss of function results in cryptic splicing leading to the inclusion of cryptic exons that induce frameshifts causing RNA degradation or cryptic peptides. This disruption of cellular homeostasis leads to neuronal death in both cortical and motor neurons\, a defining characteristic of ALS. Studies of the cause of ALS have implicated the exposure to environmental toxins as a risk factor for the progression of ALS. Here we use a fluorescent reporter of TDP-43 cryptic splicing in I3neurons in an assay of 22 environmental toxins to characterize the effects of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and heavy metals on TDP-43 protein function. We show that increased concentrations of toxins reduce survivability of neurons and increase cryptic splicing events. We conclude that exposure to environmental toxins may contribute to ALS progression by disrupting TDP-43 protein function. For Black women in particular\, hair has and continues to be tied to ethnic identity and a history of self-determination\, social justice\, and survival. Thus\, chemotherapy-induced hair loss is a devastating event for Black patients who are also more likely to be diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer subtypes necessitating chemotherapy\, carrying a 40% increased risk of dying from breast cancer.\n\nRedefining the ‘crown’: Approaching chemotherapy-induced alopecia among Black patients with breast cancer” started as a manuscript published in the scientific journal Cancer. But the work could not stop there. “Redefining the Crown” then metamorphosed into a photo essay project aimed at exploring the breast cancer journeys of six Black women and their experiences with hair loss due to chemotherapy. Though the project centers the experience of Black women\, we also acknowledge that breast cancer and chemotherapy-induced alopecia impact individuals of all genders. While the goal is to illuminate the unique stories of Black women who are affected uncommonly by this common disease\, the project is also a call to action regarding the disproportionate breast cancer-related mortality facing Black communities.\n\nIn this portraiture series\, photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks. In order to appeal to Latino voters\, many politicians and campaigns seek the help of Spanish-language political communications agencies\, yet there exists little research on political communications and advertising agencies generally\, and even less on specialized agencies. By conducting interviews with employees of Spanish-language agencies\, politicians and their staff\, and Spanish-language communications experts\, I was able to better understand the importance and purpose of Spanish-language political advertising.Present-Day Panopticon: Reactions to Electronic Surveillance Among Young Professionals Entering the Workforce - Lindsey Smith\nWith the rise of technology\, employers have increasing access to data on their employees' actions and productivity. Atkinson Professor\, Florida State University College of Law\n\nThis analysis introduces a framework of three different strategies for protecting American waterways—the conventional regulatory approach\, an alternative property-based approach\, and a newer human rights-based approach—and reviews how the dynamic among them will be impacted by recent Supreme Court decisions impacting environmental law. The rights of nature movement has emerged as a human rights-based approach to environmental protection\, the public trust doctrine offers a public property-based approach\, and the Clean Water Act epitomizes the more traditional regulatory approach. \n\nIn recent years\, however\, the Court issued a series of decisions that have unwound nearly a half-century of accepted regulatory practice\, limiting the reach of the Clean Water Act as a tool for protecting waterways in Sackett v. EPA\, weakening the reach of the Clean Air Act in West Virginia v. EPA\, and weakening environmental agencies more generally in Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo. These cases will exact a cost for wise environmental governance under all three models reviewed here. Exo-planetary systems can be very different from our own\, and diverse from each other. Understanding this diversity is a major goal of modern planetary science. The formation of planetary systems is not fully understood\, but major advances have been obtained in the last 10 years. New concepts have been proposed\, such as the streaming instability for the formation of planetesimals and pebble accretion for the formation of protoplanets. It is also now clear that planets forming in the proto-planetary disks have to migrate during their accretion\, if their mass exceeds a few times the mass of Mars. Accretion and dynamical evolution are therefore very coupled processes. This leads to complex evolutions\, very sensitive to initial conditions and fortuitous events\, that are the key to understand the observed diversity of planetary systems. The early formation of Jupiter and its limited migration due to the formation of Saturn are two fundamental ingredients that determined the basic structure of the Solar System. There is also evidence that the vast majority of planetary systems become unstable after the removal of the protoplanetary disk. The effects of this instability are very different depending on the masses of the planets involved. Our Solar System also experienced a global instability\, but fortuitously\, our giant planets did not develop large orbital eccentricities.\n\nBio: Dr. Morbidelli is one of the world's top experts in the dynamical history of the solar system (as one example\, the Nice model of giant planet instabilities as the origin of the late heavy bombardment). He is also an expert in the area of planet formation writ large\, with numerous contributions on the origins of planetary systems. He’s always been that way\, and he has never understood the whole phenomenon of smiling in pictures\, although he is a very happy guy. One night in middle school he stayed up under the covers with a flashlight and a DiscMan\, listening to Reba McEntire’s 'That’s the Night that the Lights Went Out in Georgia' on repeat until the DiscMan ran out of batteries. That night he became a songwriter\, although he didn’t actually write a song until years later. After high school he spent a few years distracting himself from having to gather up the courage to do what he knew he had to do.\n\nEventually he found his way to a writing degree\, and then a teaching degree. He wrote most days like his life depended on it\, all sorts of things\, not just songs\, but songs too. He fell in love with teaching high school English\, which was fantastic because he never thought he’d actually come to truly love it. His students were fierce and unstoppable forces of noise and curiosity\, and for all that they took from him in sleep and sense\, they gave him a hundred times back in sparks and humility. \n\nAll the while he was also playing truckloads of music. There was one weekend where he flew to LA while grading essays on the plane\, played two shows\, and then flew back home\, still grading essays\, and woke up to teach at 5 am on Monday morning. It was around this time he started wondering if such a life was sustainable.\n\nAlas\, music\, the tour life\, was a constant raccoon scratching at the back door. Jeffrey spent nights on end sitting up in bed\, and then sitting on the front porch\, staring off into the dark\, wondering if he could bear to leave teaching to go on tour full time. Eventually his brain caught up with what his guts had known for months. With tears in his eyes he announced to his students that he wouldn’t be back the following year\, and that he didn’t feel right hollering at them to chase their dreams at all cost if he wasn’t going to do the same.\n\nJeffrey Martin tours full time now. He is always making music\, and he is always coming through your town. He misses teaching like you might miss a good old friend who you know you’ll meet again. For Black women in particular\, hair has and continues to be tied to ethnic identity and a history of self-determination\, social justice\, and survival. Thus\, chemotherapy-induced hair loss is a devastating event for Black patients who are also more likely to be diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer subtypes necessitating chemotherapy\, carrying a 40% increased risk of dying from breast cancer.\n\nRedefining the ‘crown’: Approaching chemotherapy-induced alopecia among Black patients with breast cancer” started as a manuscript published in the scientific journal Cancer. But the work could not stop there. “Redefining the Crown” then metamorphosed into a photo essay project aimed at exploring the breast cancer journeys of six Black women and their experiences with hair loss due to chemotherapy. Though the project centers the experience of Black women\, we also acknowledge that breast cancer and chemotherapy-induced alopecia impact individuals of all genders. While the goal is to illuminate the unique stories of Black women who are affected uncommonly by this common disease\, the project is also a call to action regarding the disproportionate breast cancer-related mortality facing Black communities.\n\nIn this portraiture series\, photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks. Wu\, MD\, PhD is Director of Stanford Cardiovascular Institute and Simon H. Stertzer\, MD\, Professor of Medicine and Radiology at Stanford University. Dr. Wu received his MD from Yale University and PhD (Molecular & Medical Pharmacology) at University of California\, Los Angeles. He is board certified in cardiovascular medicine. For Black women in particular\, hair has and continues to be tied to ethnic identity and a history of self-determination\, social justice\, and survival. Thus\, chemotherapy-induced hair loss is a devastating event for Black patients who are also more likely to be diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer subtypes necessitating chemotherapy\, carrying a 40% increased risk of dying from breast cancer.\n\nRedefining the ‘crown’: Approaching chemotherapy-induced alopecia among Black patients with breast cancer” started as a manuscript published in the scientific journal Cancer. But the work could not stop there. “Redefining the Crown” then metamorphosed into a photo essay project aimed at exploring the breast cancer journeys of six Black women and their experiences with hair loss due to chemotherapy. Though the project centers the experience of Black women\, we also acknowledge that breast cancer and chemotherapy-induced alopecia impact individuals of all genders. While the goal is to illuminate the unique stories of Black women who are affected uncommonly by this common disease\, the project is also a call to action regarding the disproportionate breast cancer-related mortality facing Black communities.\n\nIn this portraiture series\, photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks. This exhibition examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy and how their sense of cultural pride and personal identity have been redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThese survivors have redefined their own crowns. The group’s name\, rummage\, evokes both a materiality and an intellectual practice characteristic of museum studies more broadly. On the one hand\, rummaging has a tactile quality. It gestures to the human role in how objects are placed and misplaced\, organized and disorganized\, thrown into juxtaposition\, and often randomly re-discovered anew by individuals negotiating various value systems associated with objects. It evokes an image of coming to objects of the past with new eyes and curiosity. On the other hand\, rummaging could also be used to describe an intellectual approach. In posing questions about the how and why certain narratives come to be exhibited and interpreted\, we root around historical understandings of heritage and the power dynamics that lead certain narratives to become dominant. This process is guided by curiosity\, a drive to understand\, and a skepticism of ordering systems. Founded in Fall 2023\, this RIW takes the attics\, closets\, and cabinets of exhibition history as a starting point to engage questions relating to those spaces aligned with — or challenging — the International Council of Museums’ broad definition of a museum as an institution “in the service of society that researches\, collects\, conserves\, interprets and exhibits tangible and intangible heritage”.
