SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:“Structure-Based Insights into the Control of Heme Biosynthesis”
DESCRIPTION:ABSTRACT: Heme is a critical biomolecule that carries out several functions in nearly all life forms\, including humans where its most widely known role is mediating oxygen transport in the blood. It is imperative that heme production is tightly controlled as alterations in cellular heme levels can have drastic consequences for human health. The first and rate-limiting enzyme controlling heme biosynthesis is aminolevulinic acid synthase (ALAS). ALAS is conserved in α- proteobacteria and non-plant eukaryotes\, however\, an important structural feature found exclusively in eukaryotic ALAS enzymes is the C-terminal extension. We seek to understand how ALAS interacts with accessory proteins as well as organism-specific differences in protein assembly that may alter the regulation of heme production. Therefore\, we use X-ray crystallography combined with biophysical and biochemical characterization of various eukaryotic ALAS enzymes to parse apart the role of this key regulatory region in eukaryote ALAS function. Our work is beginning to reveal key structure-function relationships between the orientation and molecular contacts mediated by the C-terminus and ALAS enzyme function\, thus controlling heme biosynthesis.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CANCELLED: EIHS Workshop: Atmospheres of Violence: Loss\, Silence\, and Affect in Archival Research
DESCRIPTION:Researching historical violence poses methodological\, ethical\, political\, and affective challenges\, particularly when this violence continues into the present\, disrupts linear notions of time\, and undermines triumphant progress narratives. When working in an archive defined by violence and terror\, scholars are surrounded by emotions\, both their own and their subjects’. In this workshop\, an interdisciplinary group of graduate students will consider how scholars can write about marginalized subjects and communities whose voices have been systematically silenced and distorted by traditional historical archives. Foregrounding the affective politics of archival erasure\, our panelists will offer different models for navigating archives characterized by profound violence. Our panel will include case studies from the temple of Sarapis in Ptolemaic Egypt during the second century BCE\, the St. Charles School for Boys in Progressive-era Illinois\, and contemporary social media archives documenting trauma and activism. \n\nPanelists:\n\n• Dora Gao (PhD Student\, Ancient History\, University of Michigan)\n• Allie Goodman (PhD Candidate\, History\, University of Michigan)\n• Kristen Leer (PhD Candidate\, Communication and Media\, University of Michigan)\n• Kathryn Babayan\, moderator (Professor\, History\, Middle East Studies\, University of Michigan)\n\nThis event presented by the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. It is made possible in part by a generous contribution from Kenneth and Frances Aftel Eisenberg.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CSEAS Lecture Series. Reincarnation and Recursivity as Politics of Atmosphere
DESCRIPTION:This paper examines how the artwork of Tuan Andrew Nguyen registers and counters atmospheric violence of chemical and militaristic warfare. Nguyen probes and unearths how aerial bombings continue to affect and harm communities. Although the artist views atmospheric violence and its aftermath as legacies of colonialism\, the paper argues\, his persistence with the topics of immolation and reincarnation moves us beyond accepted frameworks and paradigms in colonial studies\, such as the self-other relationship\, towards the possibilities of contingency from recursivity and of empathy and compassion. Nguyen’s art transfigures the medium of atmosphere to address the physical and mental traumas caused by atmospheric violence.\n\nSpeaker Bio\nBen Tran is an associate professor of Asian studies and English at Vanderbilt University. His research examines the politics and aesthetics of twentieth- and twenty-first-century Southeast Asian\, Asian American\, and Anglophone literatures. As the repercussions of colonialism and decolonization\, modern warfare\, climate change\, and globalization continue to unfold in Southeast Asia and the Pacific Rim\, he examines how literary and cultural works depict and resist modernity’s vertiginous transformations.\n\nRegister here: http://myumi.ch/RWDJ6\n\n---\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact cseas@umich.edu. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

Middle age also brings new experiences for those with female reproductive organs – namely\, menopause – about which organizational scholarship is largely silent. Prior research shows that women are embarrassed to share their menopausal status at work\, but vasomotor symptoms (“hot flashes”) -- sweating and flushing – are a common and observable experience that may “out” her menopausal identity. I will discuss how menopause is a “taboo” at work\, drawing on the stigma and disclosure literature to propose that menopausal stigma constrains leadership opportunities for women and what can be done about it. Describing findings from a series of experimental vignette methodology studies\, I will answer the following questions: 1) What is menopause and why is it relevant to study in organizational contexts? 2) Does menopausal status evoke less favorable stereotypes than middle-age in ways that constrain leadership outcomes for women? 3) Does concealing or disclosing menopausal status from work colleagues improve judgments of leadership potential? In short\, I aim to share why it is both prevalent and relevant to study menopause in organizational science\, and what we can do to reduce the potential for biased decisions about leader potential.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Honors Film Series
DESCRIPTION:This year’s Honors Film series is a two-part study in the art of cinematography: The general composition of a scene\; the lighting of the set or location\; the choice of cameras\, lenses\, filters\, and film stock\; camera angle and movements\; as well as the integration of visual effects using Cinema’s golden rule: Show\, don’t tell.About the films: Koyaanisqatsi consists of slow motion and time-lapse cinematography of cities and natural landscapes across the United States. The film is a visual tone poem containing neither dialogue nor a vocalized narration\; being\, rather\, a juxtaposition of images and music that reflects this Native American Hopi word meaning “life out of balance.” The film was selected in 2000 for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress for being “culturally\, aesthetically\, or historically significant.” (1 hour\, 26 minutes) | March 17th from 2-4pmKestrel's Eye is unlike virtually any nature movie ever made. Filmed over several years\, it is the portrait of a family of European falcons (kestrels) who live in a church tower above a small Swedish village. The amazing cinematography was nominated for Sweden’s Oscar (the Guldbagge Award for Best Cinematography) in 1998 for capturing the intimacy of these birds’ lives through what the Merrimack Valley Sunday calls an “utterly mesmerizing and startlingly original film.” (1 hour\, 29 minutes) | March 31st from 2-4pmAttending both film viewings and the reflections immediately following the show will earn you one Engagement Point towards the Sophomore Honors Award.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Social Research with Unstructured Data: Connection Series
DESCRIPTION:Social science increasingly uses data that requires advanced tools and algorithms. Preparing text\, audio\, and video data for analysis and running those analyses involves linking contemporary computational tools with datasets and major research challenges in ways that cut across disciplines. Building bridges between data scientists who develop the tools to analyze these data and social scientists who have datasets to address research questions in unprecedented ways that could benefit from them is critical for both opening the world of these new data and refining the tools for analysis.\n \nThe Social Research with Unstructured Data: Connection Series\, jointly sponsored by MIDAS\, the AI Lab and ISR\, is designed to build connections between social scientists and data scientists to improve scholarship in both arenas. Scholars in both groups present research vision and cutting-edge methodology that could benefit from additional interdisciplinary collaboration and theorizing. The series connects faculty\, research scientists\, postdoctoral\, and graduate students to help build major research projects from their vision\, find the right methods for their data\, identify collaborators\, or find scholars who can help trial run the tools they have developed. \n \nEvents will be held from 2:00-3:30 PM in ISR 6050 (426 Thompson Street)\, with meetings in January\, February\, March\, April\, and May. Refreshments provided. We encourage you to sign up ahead of time: https://myumi.ch/7eZWG For more information\, or if you are interested in presenting work in progress at this series\, please contact Beth Uberseder (ubersbe@umich.edu).\n \nSpeakers TBA.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Strategic Information Transmission in the Employment Relationship
DESCRIPTION:We incorporate private information and strategic communication (Crawford and Sobel\, 1982) into Simon’s (1951) model of the employment relationship. We consider contracts between a principal and an agent that specify a bounded finite number of instructions and a fixed wage. Once the principal\, privately\, learns the state\, she can either enforce one of the instructions from the contract or send a non-binding cheap- talk message to the agent. In the former case\, the principal determines the action\, in the latter case the agent does. All contracts partition the state space into ‘topics\,’ with each topic giving rise to a game in its own right. With little conflict\, optimal contracts specify approximately the maximal available number of instructions\, and there will be at least one topic in which there is (cheap-talk) communication. For ‘extreme conflict’ optimal contracts are simple\, specify a single instruction\, and do not generate communication. In the uniform-quadratic specification\, with sufficiently small conflict\, topics from optimal contracts induce similar numbers of cheap-talk actions.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Combinatorics Seminar --Stirling numbers for complex reflection groups
DESCRIPTION:NOTE UNUSUAL TIME. The ordinary Stirling numbers count set partitions and permutations of the set {1\,2\,...\,n} by number of subsets and number of cycles\, respectively. We show how to generalize these concepts to a complex reflection group. The ordinary Stirling numbers are recovered in type A. It turns out that often these Stirling numbers can be expressed in terms of elementary and homogeneous symmetric functions. We also make a connection with super coinvariant algebras. All terminology concerning Stirling numbers\, symmetric functions\, and complex reflection groups will be defined. This is joint work with Joshua Swanson.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:MCAIM Grad Seminar: Quantifying the Dissipation Enhancement of Cellular Flows
DESCRIPTION:We study the dissipation enhancement by cellular flows. Previous work by Iyer\, Xu\, and Zlatoš produces a family of cellular flows that can enhance dissipation by an arbitrarily large amount. We improve this result by providing quantitative bounds on the dissipation enhancement in terms of the flow amplitude\, cell size and diffusivity. Explicitly we show that the mixing time is bounded by C(ε^2/κ + |ln δ|^2/(ε^2A)). Here κ is the diffusivity\, ε is the cell size\, A/ε is the flow amplitude\, and δ = (κ/A)^(1/2) is the thickness of the boundary layer. The above agrees with the optimal heuristics. We also prove a general result relating the dissipation time of incompressible flows to the mixing time. The main idea behind the proof is to study the dynamics probabilistically and construct a successful coupling.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Farrand Memorial Lecture
DESCRIPTION:This event will be live streamed on the U-M Museum of Natural History website\, ummnh.org.\n\nThe existence of the microbial universe calls us to creativity. Whether harnessing the carbon-capturing power of blue-green algae or compelling society to care about something too small to see\, art is often the answer. Join us for a panel discussion on the importance of science\, technology\, engineering\, art and mathematics (STEAM) collaborations in understanding and spreading awareness about microbial systems. This Farrand Lecture will bring together three U-M professionals who have captured the magnificence of the microbial world through art and design.\n\n- Moderated by April Baer\, host of Michigan Radio's Stateside program.\n- Jim Cogswell\, Arthur F. Thurnau Professor and professor of Art & Design in the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design\, creator of the Unseen Worlds vinyl mural.\n- Erica Gardner\, PhD student in the U-M Department of Chemical Engineering\, co-creator of the Microbial Masterpieces Project.\n- Anthony Vecchiarelli\, assistant professor in the U-M Department of Molecular\, Cellular\, and Developmental Biology and researcher behind UMMNH’s Algae and the Climate Crisis exhibit.\n\nA public reception will precede the lecture at the U-M Museum of Natural History beginning at 6:00 p.m. The museum is located in the Biological Sciences Building\, 1105. N. University Ave.\, Ann Arbor\, MI. The Central Campus Classroom Building is a short walk\, at grade\, from the museum.\n\nThe Farrand Memorial Lecture honors the memory of Dr. William R. Farrand\, who served as director of the U-M Exhibit Museum of Natural History for seven years (July 1993-June 2000)\, as well as his long career as a professor in the U-M Department of Geological Sciences. Past lectures have covered topics such as U-M collections\, astronomy\, biodiversity\, evolution\, and climate change.\n\nThe Farrand Lecture is a featured event in the museum’s Microverse theme semester. Thanks to Michigan Radio\, media sponsor of this event.\n\nThe U-M College of Literature\, Science and the Arts (LSA) and the U-M Museum of Natural History greatly value inclusion and access for all. We are pleased to provide reasonable accommodations to enable your full participation in this event. Please contact the museum’s main office at ummnh.office@umich.edu or 734-764-0480 if you would like to request disability accommodations or have any questions or concerns. SUMMARY:Performance:MFA Grad Performance: Tales of a Living Past\, Department of Dance
DESCRIPTION:Tickets are free\, available one hour before the performance.\n\nThe Department of Dance at the University of Michigan School of Music\, Theatre\, and Dance presents Tales of a Living Past\, with choreography by Gloria Ahlijah\, Jason Reese C.\, Sreya Muthukumar\, and Kara Roseborough.\nIn Jason Reese C’s work This House Will Burn Down\, we fall into a surreal landscape that cradles and confines a scene from a monotonous marriage. The space feels like a barren home\, a cathedral and a morgue all in one. There is a great distance between the bodies\, what they do\, what they say\, how they interact. And we watch as the underbelly of this relationship unfolds through its inevitable decay. \nThe Absence of______\,  a dance piece by Gloria Ahlijah\, is driven by an in-depth exploration of silence\, gaze\, and breath as elements of fear\, power\, and strength. The compositional contrast and inexistent music create discomfort and tension among performers and audience\, which prompts the performers to build a connection with their inner being while tapping into their internal sound.\nBr’er\, created by Kara Roseborough is a solo performance that dives into the emergence and evolution of folk character Br’er Rabbit within the culture and oral traditions of enslaved Black Americans in the antebellum American south. Kara conveys Br’er’s journey through self-awareness and reclamation of power and identity.\nSet in Stone is an experimental work by Sreya Muthukumar that explores the mysteries surrounding the figure of the ‘apsara’\, or celestial nymph\, in Indian mythology. What is to be sensual? What is to be leisurely? And what happens to the apsara when no one is watching her? This piece brings together elements of Indian Classical dance\, modern dance vocabularies\, and an eclectic sound score\, in order to explore\, uncover\, and question the shadow these figures cast upon the modern women of today. \nKara Roseborough and Sreya Muthukumar explore the intersections of two classical dance forms\, Ballet and Bharatanatyam\, in their shared creation\, Classic. This piece delves into the tensions\, joys\, and discoveries of the convergent and divergent points of these practices.

SUMMARY:Performance:Sonny Landreth with Cindy Cashdollar
DESCRIPTION:After a dozen acclaimed albums\, virtuoso slide guitarist and bandleader Sonny Landreth found himself at an artistic crossroads. He wanted to finally create the full-length acoustic collection his fans had long requested. But he was also itching to capture the sound of his stalwart electric trio augmented by a couple of his favorite collaborators. Sonny’s \"Recorded Live in Lafayette\" album is a 16-song opus that covers more musical ground than any single album ever could\, as the singer and songwriter's work stretches and twists across 93 minutes of full-band acoustic and electric bottleneck lightning. You can get a taste of the magic without going to Lafayette right here at The Ark—Sonny Landreth is one of the great live guitarists of our time! This time around\, Sonny is accompanied by the reigning queen of the steel guitar\, Cindy Cashdollar. The Suitcase Junket opens\; they have a new album\, “The End Is New.”

SUMMARY:Performance:THE BOYS IN THE BAND
DESCRIPTION:Come see In the Round's inaugural play: The Boys in the Band! Five friends gather at Michael’s apartment to celebrate their friend\, Harold’s\, birthday. Michael didn’t plan\, though\, for the unexpected arrival of Alan\, his friend from college. Alan has no idea that Michael nor any of his friends are gay. As the drinks keep coming\, the fun soon takes a nasty turn as secrets are revealed\, arguments are unearthed\, and blows are thrown\, culminating in a shocking drunken phone “game” that may ruin more than one life. The Boys in the Band was a groundbreaking piece of theatre when it premiered in 1968\, with playwright Mart Crowley depicting gay men’s lives on stage with honesty\, truth\, and no apologies. Half a century later\, the play proves to be as entertaining\, bold\, and inspiring as ever. \n\nPlease visit https://mutotix.umich.edu/4017/4018 for more detail.

DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the first-ever African Muslim Film Festival (AMFF) 2023!\n \nThe African Muslim Film Festival is the first of its kind\, screening films from all across Africa that were made by\, for\, or about Muslims. All films will be streamable & online\, with a variety of films from Sudan\, Chad\, Egypt\, and South Africa.\n \nThis year’s festival will offer four films in total\, each available as one film a week during the month of March. \n\nMarch 9-16: *You Will Die at Twenty* - Sudan | 2019 | Drama/Narrative | Directed by Amjad Abu Alala\n\nMarch 16-23: *Abouna* - Chad | 2002 | Drama | Directed by Mahamat Saleh Haroun\n\nMarch 23-30: *Mawlana* - Egypt | 2016 | Drama/Mystery | Directed by Magdi Ahmed Ali\n\nMarch 30- April 6: *Barakat* - South Africa | 2020 | Comedy | Directed by Amy Jephta\n\nThe festival opens on Thursday\, March 9th at 3 pm ET and closes on Thursday\, April 6th at 3 pm ET. \n\nEach film will open and close every Thursday of March at 3 pm ET. \n\nAll screenings are free. Some films will only be available in North America. Check each film’s information for more details. All films will include English subtitles. \n \nPre-order your films\, watch trailers\, and learn more here: http://watch.eventive.org/amff\n\n---\n\nTHIS WEEK’S FEATURE: \nAvailable to stream on demand from March 30-April 6 at http://watch.eventive.org/amff\n\n*Barakat*\n2020 | 105 minutes | Afrikaans | South Africa\nDirected by: Amy Jephta\n \nWhen matriarch Aisha Davids decides to accept a marriage proposal\, she devises a plan to break the news to her four sons over Eid. The only problem is that the two eldest sons have been at odds since their father passed away and refuse to be in the same room at the same time.\n \nHer big reveal is spoiled when the boys hear via the grapevine about their mother’s pending marriage and come together to voice their disapproval. Now it’s up to Aisha\, her fiancé\, and her daughters-in-law to bring the sons around to her way of thinking using the one thing they can all agree on–the *barakat*. *Barakat*\, an Arabic word meaning blessings\, is a story about celebrating life\, culture\, and the importance of family.\n \nFilm Background & Facts:\n*Barakat* is a 2020 South African family drama film directed by Amy Jephta and produced by Ephraim Gordon. It is the first Afrikaans-language Muslim feature film produced in South Africa. *Barakat*\, an Urdu word meaning “Blessings\,” was told with gentle humanity stemming from filmmakers with lived experience. This is a rare and insightful glimpse into the heart of the Muslim\, Malay\, mixed-race community of Cape Town\, seen through the prism of one family’s travails as they grapple with the ups and downs of life\, love\, and familial relationships in a way that is recognizable and relatable.\n\n\n\n__________________\nThis African Muslim Film Festival is brought to you by the Global Islamic Studies Center and cosponsored by the African Studies Center\, Arab and Muslim American Studies\, the Center for Middle East and North African Studies\, Digital Islamic Studies Curriculum\, the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies\, the Department of Film\, Television\, and Media\, the Department of Middle Eastern Studies\, the Department of Political Science\, and the Sawyer Seminar on the Africana Muslim and Genealogies of White Supremacy.\n\n\nVisit http://watch.eventive.org/amff for more details.\n\nWant to hear about similar events from U-M Islamic Studies? On display is material drawn from the University of Michigan collections dealing with the history of early astronomy: manuscripts\, early printed books\, and artifacts illustrating Mesopotamian\, Greek\, Islamic\, and Western European astronomy.\n\nThis exhibit and its permanent online counterpart (https://umlib.us/earlyastronomy) are part of the Aratus Project\, which was sponsored by the National Science Foundation and led by Prof. Francesca Schironi. The core of the project has been to study Aratus’ \"Phaenomena\,\" the most important poem on stars and constellations of the Graeco-Roman ancient world\, and its exegetical tradition. Read an annotated edition and English translation of \"Phaenomena\" and its commentaries (https://aratus.classics.lsa.umich.edu/). The physical and online exhibits place this research work within its later intellectual and historical context.\n\nCurated by: John Steele\, Professor of the History of the Exact Sciences in Antiquity\, Department of Egyptology and Assyriology\, Brown University\; Francesca Schironi\, U-M Professor of Classical Studies\; Evyn Kropf\, U-M Librarian for Middle Eastern & North African Studies\; Pablo Alvarez\, U-M Curator (Special Collections Research Center).\n\nCheck Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours: https://myumi.ch/2mx44

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Humanize the Numbers
DESCRIPTION:Prison Creative Arts Project presents an exhibition of collaborative photography at the Detroit Historical Museum (5401 Woodward Ave. in Detroit)\, open now through May 21st.\n\nA public reception will be held on March 9th\, 6:00–9:00 PM\, with a panel of previous workshop participants at 7:00 PM.\n\nWe hope you will be able to see the exhibit\, and please be in touch if you have any questions.\n\nHumanize the Numbers shows the perspectives of men in Michigan prisons. The prison system regulates every part of an inmate's identity. Instead of using their name\, they are given an ID number. Visiting room photos and mug shots are tightly regulated. Personal info is recorded: height\, weight\, etc. In the process\, their humanity is denied.\n\nThis exhibit at the Detroit Historical Museum reveals the faces and stories of those in prison. It lifts up the voices of those who have been silenced by the criminal legal system. The Humanize the Numbers project gives them a freedom not normally allowed in prison. They share their stories with the world outside. By doing so\, those in prison reclaim their humanity.\n\nMuseum hours\nThursdays–Saturdays: 10:00 AM–5:00PM \nSundays: 1:00–5:00 PM

SUMMARY:Exhibition:UN/EARTH
DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

\n\n\nPlease visit https://mutotix.umich.edu/4017/4019 for more detail.

SUMMARY:Performance:Beth Nielsen Chapman
DESCRIPTION:Beth Nielsen Chapman is an eclectic\, critically acclaimed American singer-songwriter\, a Songwriter's Hall of Fame member with seven number-one hits\, and songs sung by Elton John\, Bonnie Raitt\, Bette Midler\, Willie Nelson\, Olivia Newton-John\, and Neil Diamond.\n\nWith 14 albums of her own\, numerous film and TV placements\, hits like Faith Hill's \"This Kiss\,\" and multiple Grammy nominations\, she's kept busy despite adversity. Losing her first husband to cancer\, then herself surviving breast cancer and a brain tumor\, it is a deep well she taps into at her shows\, workshops\, and keynotes for healing\, inspiration\, and creative flow. And we’ve been delighted to see how she’s been passing her talents along to a new generation\, co-writing and performing with Michigan’s own young phenomenon The Accidentals.\n\nBeth comes to Michigan with a new album\, “CrazyTown.”

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Early Astronomy in the University of Michigan Collections
DESCRIPTION:Trace how astronomy was developed\, studied\, and disseminated through the centuries\, from 1500 BCE to the Renaissance.

We welcome Paul as our special guest to thank him for his immense efforts in community mobilization and youth empowerment. \n\nPaul grew up in the Little Village neighborhood of Chicago. Being a product of the public school system\, Paul believes that all youth deserve an equal chance of success. He has defeated many socioeconomic barriers as an indigenous man from Guerrero\, Mexico\; Paul has over six years of youth development and project planning\, working with various non-profit organizations.
\n\nPlease visit https://mutotix.umich.edu/4017/4021 for more detail.
