SUMMARY:Presentation:Inaugural Irwin Pollack Lecture | Exceptional Speech Recognition Outcomes: Lessons from Three Case Studies
DESCRIPTION:Individual differences and variability in outcomes following cochlear implantation and auditory brain stem implantation remain significant unresolved problems. In this talk I will present the results of research we have carried out on three exceptional adults with significant hearing loss who received implants. Two of the patients received cochlear implants\; the third received an Auditory Brainstem Implant. Case-reports on these three individuals have provided us with a novel way of investigating the foundational information processing mechanisms underlying variability in outcomes. All three adults displayed exceptionally good speech recognition outcomes following implantation and were administered a novel test battery to measure their auditory\, speech-language\, and neurocognitive functioning to uncover their strengths\, weaknesses\, and milestones. Our results suggest that current clinical outcome measures used to assess the benefits following implantation should be expanded beyond conventional endpoint product measures to include more sensitive robust tests of speech recognition and neurocognitive functioning.\n\nAbout the speaker: \nDavid B. Pisoni is currently a Distinguished Professor of Psychological and Brain Sciences and Chancellor’s Professor of Cognitive Science at Indiana University in Bloomington. He is also an Adjunct Professor of Speech and Hearing Sciences and Linguistics at IU where he has taught undergraduate and graduate classes in Cognitive Psychology and carried out basic\, applied and clinical research on speech perception and spoken language processing. He is also an Adjunct Professor of Otolaryngology—HNS at the IU School of Medicine in Indianapolis where he carries out clinical research on hearing and cochlear implants in deaf children and adults.\n\nDr. Pisoni is one of the world’s leading research scientists in the field of Communication Sciences and Disorders. Over his 55 year career at IU\, he has carried out seminal research on human speech perception\, spoken word recognition\, language processing\, and perceptual development in infants and children. He has also carried out pioneering research on several applied problems for the United States Air Force dealing with the perception of synthesized speech in cognitively demanding environments as well as the effects of noise on speech production. For the last 33 years he has also worked at the IU School of Medicine on numerous clinical problems associated with hearing impairment in deaf children and adults who have received cochlear implants. This program of research has had important clinical applications for understanding the enormous variability in speech and language outcomes following implantation. Throughout his career\, Professor Pisoni has made significant contributions in basic\, applied and clinical research in areas of speech and language processing. As the founding Program Director of the Indiana University\, NIDCD T32 training program in Speech\, Hearing\, and Sensory Communication\, he was closely involved in training and mentoring undergraduates\, graduate students\, medical students\, and postdoctoral research fellows who worked closely with him and other faculty in the research laboratories in Bloomington and Indianapolis.\n\nEstablished thanks to a generous gift from the Pollack family\, the Irwin Pollack Lecture Series features world-class speakers in the fields of psychophysics\, cognition\, and perception. This inaugural lecture will be held as a Zoom watch party at the Michigan League in the Henderson room followed by a reception in the Hussey room. The talk will be recorded. For questions\, please contact psych.admin@umich.edu.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:A Theory of Choice Overload
DESCRIPTION:This paper revisits the classic Pandora’s box problem\, studying a decision-maker (DM) who seeks to minimize her maximal ex-post regret. The DM decides how many options to explore before choosing one or taking an outside option. We characterize the regret-minimizing search rule and show that the likelihood of opting out often increases as more options become available for exploration. Our model thus predicts `choice overload\,’ the phenomenon by which a default alternative is more likely to be chosen in larger choice sets.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:AIM Seminar: Geomorphological controls on turbulent mixing in estuaries: implications for water quality
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Turbulent mixing in coastal environments can influence the distribution of material suspended in the water column and the exchange of water with the coastal ocean\, making it a key mechanism controlling water quality. In this talk I will explain how turbulence is accounted for in estuarine physics\, how we measure turbulence in the physical environment\, and will show results from one case study in Frenchman Bay\, Maine\, an area known for its complex deglaciated coastline\, strong tidal influence\, and shellfishing activities that are susceptible to problematic harmful algal blooms (HABs). Measurements of current velocity\, density\, and turbulence collected over a semidiurnal tidal cycle (~12 h) and a companion numerical model simulation of the study area provide concurrent evidence of counter-rotating sub-mesoscale eddies (2–4 km diameter) that enhance near-surface mixing. The eddies are generated in the wake of several islands in an area with abrupt bathymetric gradients\, both legacy conditions partly derived from deglaciation ~15 kya. Increased concentrations of algal cells measured during the 12 h survey follow a trend of elevated turbulent dissipation rates near the water surface due to the eddies. Our findings provide incentive to examine current practices of HAB monitoring and management by linking coastal geomorphology to hydraulic conditions influencing HAB sampling outcomes.\n\n\n\nContact: Chris DiScenza

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Seminar | Renormalization Group in far-from-equilibrium states
DESCRIPTION:We consider half BPS operators in maximally supersymmetric Yang Mills (SYM) in p+1 dimensions. These operators satisfy trace relations that are identical to those discussed in the p=3 case (N = 4 SYM). Nevertheless\, the bulk explanation of these trace relations must differ from the p = 3 case as their holographic duals are not AdS spacetimes. We identify giant graviton solutions in the dual holographic backgrounds for -1 <= p <= 4. In the ’t Hooft limit\, these giants are D(6-p) branes that wrap the internal sphere. We also follow the giants into the strong coupling region where they become other branes. Despite propagating in a non-AdS geometry\, we find that the branes “feel” like they are in AdS. This is closely related to the emergent scaling symmetry present in these boundary theories.\n\nbased on https://arxiv.org/abs/2502.14249

DESCRIPTION:Come learn about postgrowth and degrowth\, defined as: the planned & equitable downscaling of wealthy societies' throughputs of material and energy\, designed to bring the economy back in balance with the living world in a way that reduces inequality and improves human well-being (definitions adapted from Giorgos Kallis and Jason Hickel). Degrowth is widely misunderstood\, but is having a moment in pockets across the globe\, including an EU-wide research project currently looking into how to implement degrowth policies. Come learn about degrowth efforts in the US\, localizing material circularity\, and opportunities to advance community resilience. Dani took several courses on the subject with leading degrowth scholars at the Autonomous University of Barcelona\, a hub for degrowth scholarship\, so she will share her insights as well as news of exciting research.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture - Ellen Currano\, University of Wyoming
DESCRIPTION:The Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) is often considered to be the best geologic analog for modern anthropogenic warming\, as the magnitude of carbon release and warming is similar to that predicted for the coming century. I will present PETM paleobotanical records from the Bighorn Basin (northwestern Wyoming) and Hanna Basin (southeastern Wyoming) and examine changes in plant taxonomic composition\, vegetation structure\, and insect herbivory during the PETM. Water stress during the PETM was higher in the Bighorn Basin than in the Hanna Basin\, allowing investigation of the interplay of carbon dioxide\, temperature\, and water availability on forest ecosystems. I will also discuss my path to becoming a female full professor\, including being the sometimes bearded face of women in paleontology.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:GEOMETRY SEMINAR: Non-negative curvature on vector bundles over homotopy spheres.
DESCRIPTION:The seminal theorem of Cheeger and Gromoll characterizes open manifolds of non-negative sectional curvature by showing that any such manifold\, $M^n$\, is diffeomorphic to the normal bundle of a totally convex\, closed submanifold $\Sigma^k$\, a \textit{soul} of $M$. This brings up a far-reaching open problem: given a closed manifold $\Sigma^k$ with non-negative sectional curvature\, which vector bundles over $\Sigma$ admit complete metrics with non-negative curvature? In this talk we will talk about the history of this problem and answer a longstanding question of Grove-Ziller. We show that every vector bundle over every homotopy 7-sphere admits non-negative curvature. This is joint work with David Duncan and Rebecca Field.

SUMMARY:Performance:\"Shadowed Embraces\"
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Dance at the University of Michigan School of Music\, Theatre\, and Dance presents *Shadowed Embraces\,* with choreography by Robert Farr-Jones\, Mary Kacsur\, Stella Lansill\, and Najah Tucker. This concert runs April 17th\, 18th\, & 19th at 7:30 pm. \n\nMary Kacsur’s group work\, *Light Encounters\,* utilizes three symbols–sunrise\, sunset\, and the North Star–to represent new beginnings\, hope\, direction\, and the guidance that we seek in our lives. Dancers Eve Anderson\, Ava Barber\, Alexandra Baron\, Julianne Doner\, Lily Gonzalez\, and Alyssa Hernandez take the audience on a reflective exploration through morning and night. In Kacsur’s solo\, Love\, Mary\, she reflects on significant moments in her life\, exploring themes of resilience\, nostalgia\, and healing. By sharing her personal journey\, she highlights the importance of investing in moments that bring joy and truly matter.\n\nInspired by Jewish traditions\, ancestral memory\, and identity\, Stella Lansill’s *A fire must be tended to* explores trauma\, resilience\, intimacy\, and rebirth through movement\, visual art\, and live music. The connected group and solo piece confront youthful naivety with the ancient hymn hidden within us—burdened by past suffering and inherited trauma but gifted with the wisdom\, strength\, and creativity of those who came before\, whose voices still hum within us. Through cycles of nurturing\, explorations of queer relationships\, and sacred reckoning\, the performers undergo spiritual deaths and renewal\, embracing “darkness” as a radical space for growth and collective healing.\n\n*Consuming\,* choreographed by Najah Tucker\, explores how the weight of one singular want can cause a tidal wave of disaster. The work investigates this impending tidal wave of emotions through an ensemble of dancers. Before\, Tucker’s solo\, reminisces on past experiences that led her to where she is today.\n\nRobert Farr-Jones’s work *i’m not ready // they must be fed* explores transformation\, found family\, and the inevitability of change\, using the natural phenomenon of a whale fall as a guiding image. Through layered fabric veils developed in collaboration with a Design and Production major Ceri Roberts\, this choreography navigates cycles of loss and renewal\, inviting the audience to reflect on the profound transitions that shape our lives. \n\nThis concert is supported in part through the School of Music\, Theatre & Dance\, EXCEL Enterprise Fund and the Arts at Michigan Fund.

SUMMARY:Performance:7 Hours Difference - Part 1: The Humans
DESCRIPTION:*Under the direction of Tzveta Kassabova*\n\n*7 Hours Difference* is a two-part movement piece developed partly in Sofia\, Bulgaria and partly in Ann Arbor\, Michigan\, on campus at the University of Michigan. The piece explores how much one needs to be happy\; how much interaction\, play\, or loneliness is too much? Through an exploration of sense\, movement\, and speech\, the piece seeks to discover what it means to be human.\n\nUndergraduate Theatre & Drama students Amelia Fontaine\, Ryland Gigante\, Sam Hopkins\, Ashley Kramer\, Sophia Lane\, Ella Lewis\, Myles Matthews\, CC Meade\, James Parascandola\, Sophia Santos Ufkes\, and Tate Zeleznik have worked alongside professors Tzveta Kassabova and Jason Cianciulli to devise a new version of *7 Hours Difference Part 1: The Humans\,* the portion originally created in Bulgaria in 2024. The students will present the piece this semester in advance of a European tour this summer of parts 1 and 2 performed in collaboration with students and professors from the New Bulgarian University.\n

SUMMARY:Performance:Kylee Phillips & Kyle Joe
DESCRIPTION:Kyle Joe\, who formerly toured as Chain of Lakes and later made the American songwriter competition rounds under his legal name\, Kyle Rasche\, won the Kerrville New Folk Songwriter competition in 2022 after a finalist nod the year prior. \n\n2024 was a year of metamorphosis for Kyle Joe. After a full hard reboot of his life\, both personal and professional\, Kyle hunkered down in a humble recording studio in Ypsilanti\, Michigan to create a new seven-song mid-length album with producer and arranger Chris DuPont. This long overdue partnership gave Kyle’s newest body of work a bold southeast-Michigan indie-folk treatment\, along with guest vocals from rising stars Spencer LaJoye and Kylee Phillips. \n\nKylee Phillips is a Michigan-native vocalist and songwriter of deeply self-exposing pop music. Armed with an arresting\, emotive\, laser-focused voice\, and an unrivaled ear for hooks and melodic contour\, Phillips has garnered cult-like acclaim in the midwest and beyond since her explosive debut EP Long Time Coming.\n\nIn a world with no shortage of self-help sad-babe pop\, Phillips weaves together a sensual\, articulate\, and unpretentiously therapeutic soundtrack for the lives we live but can’t always verbalize. She lends us an experiential wisdom that could only come from a massive heart that’s seen a lot of garbage and emerged transformed and immovable.

SUMMARY:Performance:Titanic: The Musical
DESCRIPTION:*Titanic: The Musical* premiered on Broadway in April 1997\, eight months before the well-known film. It went on to become a huge success\, winning the Tony Award for Best Musical and thrilling audiences for its depiction of a defining moment in 20th-century history. The RMS *Titanic* was unlike any ship that had come before\, a marvel of engineering and a powerful symbol of progress – until its deadly collision with an iceberg turned it into a representation of hubris and human frailty. \n\nThis stirring musical depicts the hopes and aspirations of actual passengers on board the ill-fated ship\, from the wealthy and powerful in first class\, to the ambitious middle-class passengers\, to the poor immigrants in steerage – all thrilled to be part of this historic voyage\, hopeful for the future\, and blissfully unaware of the tragedy ahead. \n\n\nMusic and lyrics by Maury Yeston\nBook by Peter Stone\nDirector André Garner\nMusic Director Tyler Driskill\n\nRecommended Ages: 11+

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Prison\, a Prisoner\, and a Prison Guard
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a multimedia exploration of the impact of prisons on countries and communities across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region through the lens of “prison art.” The exhibit delves into the dynamic interplay between incarceration and creative expression to make sense of carceral systems.\n\nBy presenting prison art from various countries in the MENA region\, including Algeria\, Egypt\, Iran\, Iraq\, Lebanon\, Palestine\, Sudan\, Syria\, and Yemen\, this exhibit unfolds as a “journey” into the prison system and demonstrates the ways in which art can be a tool of expression and reconciliation for survivors\, detainees’ families\, and society at large. It promotes drawing parallels between the prison experience in the region and worldwide\, highlights the intentionality of carceral systems\, and expands the conversation to include prison-impacted communities. Viewers are invited to navigate the cross-generational\, human experiences of imprisonment often obscured behind prison walls and within individuals.\n\nCurated by Sumaya Tabbah and Susan Aboeid of The Ḥafathah Collective\, this traveling exhibit was organized by U-M Students Organize for Syria (SOS) in partnership with U-M Library and with support from the U-M Arts Initiative.\n\nPlan to attend the related discussion\, \"Art\, Justice\, and Carcerality: The Role of Creative Expression in the Pursuit of Justice\,\" on February 6.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit \"Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World: Interracial Identity in the U.S. and Around the World — What Research and Mixed Race People Tell Us\" is an exploration into the library's collections about the diversity of mixed race heritage. Through research\, narratives\, demographic data\, and a variety of visual and published materials\, explore multifaceted aspects of mixed race heritage with insights from many perspectives.\n\nThe 2020 U.S. Census illuminated a 276 percent increase in individuals who identify as \"two or more races\" since 2010. In recognition of the growing numbers of mixed race-identifying people at the University of Michigan\, throughout the country\, and across the globe\, we're excited to unveil this new exhibit — a unique exploration of changing demographics and intersectional identities.

The newly formed Stamps Student-led Exhibitions Committee (SEC) will curate and rotate selections of these prints in alignment with the portfolio’s theme—where time and effort transform raw potential.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Bibliophile and the Library: Private-Press Books from the Collection of Bill Heidrich
DESCRIPTION:View beautifully illustrated books that stand as remarkable testaments to the work of twentieth-century small private presses\, which\, in contrast to the trend of mass commercialization\, produced limited editions that celebrated the uniqueness of manual craftsmanship. Features such as exquisite typeface design\, letterpress printing\, handmade paper\, traditional illustration techniques like woodcut and engraving\, and the inclusion of original art by renowned artists highlight the presses' dedication to artistry and detail.\n\nThe display opens with an edition of \"The Works of Geoffrey Chaucer\,\" published in 1896 by William Morris at his Kelmscott Press\, a pivotal press that greatly influenced the development of the private press movement as a means of preserving and revitalizing the fine printing and art traditions of the past. Additionally\, the exhibit includes some examples of artist’s proofs\, offering a glimpse into the intricate creative process behind these exceptional works.\n\nThese books are on loan from the collection of Bill Heidrich\, a long-time supporter of the University of Michigan Library.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Welcome. Make Yourself At Home.\n \nA Gathering brings together the newest works of art to enter UMMA’s collection — many on display here for the first time. \n \nAs a free\, public museum\, UMMA staff takes care of art for the benefit of the community and society at large. The works on view in this exhibition\, all brought into the Museum between 2019 and the present\, shows how institutions like UMMA are becoming more permeable to societal challenges\, and more nimble in responding to them in service to all in their communities. In this exhibition you will find works that reflect on how global migrations\, race\, gender\, and ecological change shape the way we engage with the world and inform our visions for the future.\n \nThis collection of artistic engagements with issues give us tools to envision who we want to be as individuals\, as a museum\, and as a society\, connected to one another across space and experience.\n \nSo gather here to take in these latest works of art brought here for you. Gather here to be engulfed in their forms and meanings\, to discuss their takes\, to learn\, to disagree. Gather to relax\, make a friend\, drink a coffee\, finish the daily Wordle. Gather to feel full\, to be moved and inspired by all the possible imaginations of what is yet to come.\n \nCurated by Félix Zamora Gómez Irving Stenn\, Jr. Fellow in Public Humanities & Museum Pedagogy\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Certain absences are so stressed\, so ornate\, so planned\, they call attention to themselves\; arrest us with intentionality and purpose\, like neighborhoods that are defined by the population held away from them.” \n \n— Toni Morrison\n\nLead support for Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the U-M Arts Initiative\, and the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Michelle Hinojosa: Logcabins
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery commissioned Michelle Hinojosa (MFA\, 2023) to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the Gallery. Hinojosa has created log cabin quilts to adorn the columns in front of Stamps Gallery. The log cabin quilts traditionally represent the warm hearth at the center of a home. This installation reflects on the interplay between home\, placemaking\, labor\, and intergenerational memories of migration. Rather than quilting cotton designed to softly embrace the body\, these quilts are sewn from outdoor grade\, UV-resistant polyester. The quilt is an ode to Hinojosa’s grandmother who illegally crossed the US/Mexico border holding her babies and her quilts. As she and her family drove across the United States to work in the fields of the Salinas Valley\, the quilts offered a safe space for her and her family. Hinojosa celebrates their resilience to her grandmother and elders while also drawing attention to precarity and violence experienced by refugees and migrants crossing the US-Mexico border in our present today.\nArtist’s bio:\nMichelle Inez Hinojosa is an artist\, educator\, and researcher whose work is informed by Indigenous and Latine/x/a/o studies. Born and raised in Texas\, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in both drawing and painting and art education with a minor in art history at the University of North Texas. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. She works with quilting\, bead weaving\, embroidery\, jewelry\, transparent film installations\, painting\, ceramics\, and sculpture to honor and explore the history of migration in her family and humanize the current discourse around migration still occurring at the southern border. Alongside her artwork she maintains a writing practice to re-story\, re-make\, and re-claim the often subordinated narratives of Latinx\, Chicanx\, Mexican\, and Texican peoples. \n\nRecently\, Hinojosa was named an inaugural Creative Careers Artist in Residence at the University of Michigan\, she has also attended residencies at Mildred's Lane (Pennsylvania)\, Anderson Ranch Art Center (Aspen\, CO) and The Cedars Union (Dallas\, TX).

\n\nThis concert is supported in part through the School of Music\, Theatre & Dance\, EXCEL Enterprise Fund and the Arts at Michigan Fund.\nThe Friday\, April 18th performance will also be livestreamed. A link is available on the event page for Friday's performance

SUMMARY:Performance:Mr. B's 28th Annual Blues and Boogie Piano Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Once a year\, Mark \"Mr. B\" Braun\, Ann Arbor's own wizard of blues and boogie piano music\, comes together with other top piano players from around southeastern Michigan and beyond. Call it a piano summit\, or perhaps a meeting of the minds! Audiences in southeastern Michigan tend to think of Mr. B as a local hero\, but in fact he's well known among fans and practitioners of blues and jazz piano music all over the country and around the world. In the past\, Mr. B's Piano Celebration concerts have brought great sets by otherwise hard-to-find performers from New Orleans\, New York\, and Europe\, and they're by no means confined to boogie and blues. \n\nNote early start time!

SUMMARY:Performance:Shakespeare's Contemporaries: A Showcase
DESCRIPTION:Think Shakespeare was wild? Wait until you meet his peers!\n\nThis showcase dives into the strange\, sensational\, and sharply funny world of Renaissance drama beyond the Bard. From dark domestic tragedies to madcap meta-comedies\, these rarely-performed gems serve up everything the Renaissance stage had to offer: murder most foul\, lovers on the run\, ghostly revenge\, and star-crossed siblings. Featuring selections from Arden of Faversham\, A Woman Killed with Kindness\, The Knight of the Burning Pestle\, and ’Tis Pity She’s a Whore\, our performers bring to life tales of domestic murder\, forbidden love\, theatrical chaos\, and poisoned soup—with a side of disguises\, ghostly visits\, and syphilis jokes (it was the Renaissance\, after all).\n\nThese scenes and monologues\, by turns tragic and comic\, satirical and sincere\, showcase the daring range of early modern theatre—and remind us that Shakespeare had some pretty outrageous competition.\n\nThis performance is an end of semester showcase for Audrey Becker's RC Drama course \"Shakespeare's Contemporaries.\"

SUMMARY:Exhibition:CREES Exhibition. Threading the Needle: Vestiges of Colonialism and Femininity\, an installation by Gluklya
DESCRIPTION:Gluklya’s work is a powerful example of socially engaged art at the intersections of gender\, class\, and cultural identity. By focusing on experiences of female textile workers in Kyrgyzstan\, the artist explores the often-overlooked stories of women affected by Soviet and post-Soviet colonialism. \"Threading the Needle: Vestiges of Colonialism and Femininity\" retells their stories using a diverse range of media — film\, sculpture\, watercolors\, and felt tapestries. Unfolding the implications of economic and societal pressures on women\, Gluklya explores issues of poverty\, isolation\, and exploitation among the garment workers.\n \n Personal stories are woven into a broader social context — such as the legacy of the \"Likbez\" (liquidation of illiteracy) campaign among women in Central Asia during Soviet rule and entrenched patriarchal traditions\, like \"Ala Kachuu\" (bride-kidnapping). This dynamic — where colonization and modernization intertwine the individual lives they touch — raises questions about cultural identity and the ethical borders of decolonized research.\n\nThis exhibition was curated by CREES alumna Dianne Beal (BA REES '79). See more of her work here: https://www.diannebeal.com/curatorial.\n \nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at crees@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. Threads of Tradition: The Art of Ukrainian Vyshyvanka
DESCRIPTION:The act of embroidering and weaving designs onto cloth is deeply rooted in Ukrainian traditions. Embellished clothing (sorochky)\, ritual cloths (rushnyky)\, and household textiles accompany a person from birth until death\, punctuating important life events in between. A variety of embroidery patterns are used throughout Ukraine\; some stitches are universally known\, while others are region-specific. Ukrainian embroidered clothing is now officially celebrated with an annual Vyshyvanka Day observed throughout the world in May.\n\nTo see photos and read more about exhibited items\, visit https://myumi.ch/AZedA\n \n The embroideries and textiles exhibited are from the private collections of Arnie Klein\, Solomia Soroka\, Katerina Sirinyok-Dolgaryova\, and from the Ukrainian American Archives & Museum located in Hamtramck\, Michigan.\n \n The exhibit opens on September 5\, 2024\, in 1010 Weiser Hall\, 500 Church Street\, Ann Arbor. Contact weisercenter@umich.edu to schedule a viewing.\n\n*The exhibition is cosponsored by the Ukrainian American Archives & Museum*.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Andy Ross Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The pieces here are from a large series of works made over the last several years. In them\, Ross explores humor and personal meaning through absurd juxtapositions of pairs of wildly varied images. Each single image is stripped of its original context (be it\, for example\, a history book\, an instruction manual\, or a magazine advertisement)\, placed on a white background like some kind of specimen\, and presented afresh with a new “companion image.” These companion images confront\, contrast and converse with each other\, and thereby build new relationships\, narratives\, jokes\, and contexts.\n\nAndy Ross grew up in Macomb County\, and has been making art in various mediums since the 1970s. He received a BFA degree from College for Creative Studies\, and an MFA degree from University of Michigan. He has taught photography\, art\, and web design at colleges in California and Michigan. His photographs and collages have been exhibited in schools\, galleries\, and museums across the United States.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Angkorian Homecoming
DESCRIPTION:Informed by her experience as a refugee\, Phung Huynh’s projects explore the complexities of displacement\, assimilation\, and cultural negotiation among Cambodian and Vietnamese refugees who have resettled in the United States. She creates detailed graphite portraits on pink donut boxes to highlight the stories of Southeast Asians who have survived war trauma and genocide. Huynh’s serigraph prints about Donut Kids foreground intergenerational gaps as well as bridging the refugee parent and American child through the narratives of Cambodian American children who were raised by donut shop owners in California. Huynh’s most recent work of drawings of Cambodian Buddhist statue heads and photographic prints of decapitated statue bodies on fabric addresses the repatriation of looted Cambodian antiquities in the context of challenging the legacy of colonialism\, unethical museum practices\, and the refugee’s desire to return home. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Elizabeth Boyd-Hartmann Dizik Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:This body of work represents a playful exploration of form\, color\, and scale through the lens of cellular shapes. Inspired by the complex patterns of biological life\, the pieces are a celebration of growth\, transformation\, and the joy of experimentation. The use of non-precious materials\, such as wood balls and paint\, allowed for a liberating approach to composition and color\, while the spherical forms and circular panels evoke the look of petri dishes—symbolizing both scientific curiosity and organic development.\nBorn in Detroit\, Elizabeth is a multidisciplinary artist and mother based in the metro Detroit area\, where she works from a studio in her home. With a background in bench jewelry\, her earlier work focused on studio jewelry and was represented by Galerie Noel Guyomarc’h in Montreal.\nElizabeth’s work has been exhibited both locally and internationally. She holds a BA in Jewelry Design\, with First Class Honours\, from Central Saint Martins in London\, a BFA from the University of Michigan\, and an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art\, where she specialized in Metalsmithing and Architecture. Her diverse practice spans jewelry\, sculpture\, and installation\, blending materials and techniques to explore themes of production\, growth\, transformation\, and organic form.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Redefining the Crown
DESCRIPTION:In Winter 2025\, the Lane Hall exhibit space will feature a portraiture series titled Redefining the Crown showcasing the powerful stories of six Black breast cancer survivors.\n\nBased on a photo essay by U-M Faculty Versha Pleasant (MD/MPH) and Ava Purkiss (PhD) in Medicine at Michigan\, this exhibition examines the cultural and personal significance of hair within Black communities\, particularly through the lens of breast cancer treatment and recovery. The term \"crown\" is deeply symbolic in Black culture\, signifying beauty\, strength\, and identity. The featured photo essay by photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks.\n\nThrough their narratives and portraits\, the exhibit examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy\, inviting the audience to witness their stories with radical empathy. It explores the cultural pride and personal identity intricately tied to their hair\, and how these elements are redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThe exhibit will be on view from January 21\, 2025 to August 8\, 2025. This exhibition is presented with support from IRWG\, the Department of Women's and Gender Studies\, and Michigan Medicine. \n\nLocated on the first floor of Lane Hall (204 S. State Street)\, the Exhibit Space is free and open to the public\, M-F\, 9am-4pm.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Deep Learning Methods for Autonomous Underwater Survey\, Reacquisition\, and Close-Range Inspection
DESCRIPTION:Committee Chair: Katherine Skinner\n\nAbstract: \nUnderwater robots perform crucial search\, inspection\, and manipulation tasks in environments that are dangerous\, impractical\, or impossible for humans to operate in. In order to safely perform useful work\, it is crucial for these robotic systems to be equipped with algorithms that enable spatial awareness\, decision making\, and localization. Alternate sensing modalities such as sonar address some of these challenges but introduce new trade-offs: acoustic noise\, view-dependent imaging\, and lack of large datasets for machine learning methods.\n \nThis dissertation addresses challenges associated with autonomous survey\, reacquisition\, and inspection missions for underwater robots. Autonomous survey encompasses the deployment of robots to capture imagery of a large search area. Reacquisition refers to the maneuvers to capture varying views of any found objects. Finally\, close-up inspection of objects involves capturing optical and acoustic imagery of objects for downstream tasks. These tasks are crucial to search and rescue\, oceanography\, defense\, and infrastructure inspection applications. Traditionally\, search for submerged objects of interest has been carried out with ship-mounted sonar and human divers. However\, this manual process is time consuming\, dangerous\, and does not scale to large search areas. The use of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) promises to speed up the process of underwater survey and inspection. However\, the data these vehicles collect often requires manual analysis by humans\, which can take weeks and does not enable in-situ autonomous decision making. Although machine learning methods can speed up decision making and data processing\, there are several challenges for deploying machine learning methods in the field. After an item has been found\, marine robotic systems can be deployed for a close-up inspection to enable detailed surveys of targets of interest.\n \nThis work contributes several novel methods that aim to enable autonomous search and survey for marine robotic systems. The first contribution of this work is a method that addresses the lack of training datasets for learning-based object identification in sonar imagery collected from robotic search missions. Specifically\, this work presents a method for shipwreck segmentation that is trained entirely in simulation and performs zero-shot shipwreck segmentation with no additional fine-tuning on real data. The second contribution is a diverse\, open-source dataset and benchmark for shipwreck segmentation in sonar imagery. This contribution establishes an open-source benchmark and enables future research in machine learning for ocean exploration. After an object is found\, operators may perform lower-altitude\, specialized survey patterns for imaging the object of interest. The third contribution is an adaptive surveying algorithm that plans more efficient re-inspections of detected targets using side scan sonar. This algorithm is a novel active perception method for side scan sonar that both chooses the next best view to maximize classifier performance and aggregates and classifies multiple views from an adaptive survey. Finally\, we develop a novel Gaussian splatting framework for close-range inspections using imaging sonar that demonstrates realistic novel view synthesis and models acoustic streaking phenomena. This method can enable synthetic data generation of realistic imaging sonar data for training deep learning models and additionally enables denoising of captured sonar data\, allowing for increased interpretability. The methods presented throughout this thesis are evaluated on real-world datasets collected from field work experiments using marine robotics platforms. This dissertation represents progress toward fully autonomous underwater systems that can operate with minimal human oversight in order to greatly accelerate search and survey missions for critical underwater applications.\n\nZoom link: https://umich.zoom.us/j/97161696814

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Prelim Seminar Series - Variation and Plasticity: Investigating the evolutionary history of migratory variation and seasonal phenotypic plasticity in the butterfly genus Danaus
DESCRIPTION:Seminar Preview: The annual migration of the monarch butterfly spans over 4\,000 km and facilitates the aggregation of millions of individual butterflies in south-central Mexico each winter. The monarch migratory syndrome is complex\, integrating behavior\, morphology\, and physiology in an environmentally sensitive manner. Underlying this syndrome is an expansive genetic suite encompassing over 500 genes\, as well as a significant capacity for seasonally-sensitive phenotypic plasticity. The evolutionary histories of this genetic suite and capacity for seasonal plasticity remain largely unknown beyond within-monarch assessments.\nMonarch migration is an emerging model for testing broader hypotheses about the evolution of animal migration\, complex traits\, and the role of plasticity in adaptive evolution. A clearer understanding of how this spectacular phenomenon has emerged within just the past 20\,000 years is necessary to better contextualize evolutionary inferences drawn from this model. My dissertation research will focus on characterizing patterns of seasonal plasticity as well as migratory genetic and phenotypic variation within the butterfly genus Danaus. This work integrates comparative approaches in phylogenomics and developmental genetics to generate insights into how key features of the monarch migratory syndrome have evolved within the genus.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:GLNT: Near-center derivatives and arithmetic 1-cycles
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\n\nTheta series for lattices count lattice vectors of fixed norm. Such theta series give some of the first examples of automorphic forms.\n\nIt is possible to form \"theta series\" in other geometric contexts\, e.g. for counting problems involving abelian varieties.\nIt is expected that these theta series again have additional automorphic symmetry.\n\nI will explain some “near-central” instances of an arithmetic Siegel--Weil formula from Kudla’s program. These \"geometrize\" the classical Siegel--Weil formulas\, on lattice and lattice vector counting via Eisenstein series.\n\nAt these near-central points of functional symmetry\, we observe that both the \"leading\" special value (complex volumes) and the \"subleading\" first derivative (arithmetic volume) simultaneously have geometric meaning.\n\nThe key input is a new \"limit phenomenon\" relating positive characteristic intersection numbers and heights in mixed characteristic\, as well as its automorphic counterpart.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:HEP-Astro Seminar | Rapid Inference of Galaxy Properties in the Age of Deep and Large-Scale Surveys of the Universe
DESCRIPTION:The inference of the physical properties of galaxies at cosmological distance requires modeling a wide range of physics\, including e.g. stellar evolution and atmospheres\; dust attenuation and re-emission\; nebular physics\; and AGN emission. Bayesian inference is often used to map the inevitable degeneracies\, and the large amount of physics and wide parameter space means these codes are typically not fast. Yet current and near-future surveys of the universe will yield spectra for millions of galaxies and imaging for billions. I will discuss the tactics employed to speed up these codes\, ranging from neural net emulators of key physics (photoionization modeling\; stellar spectra) to efficient gradient enhanced GPU-accelerated high-dimensional sampling to rapid simulation-based inference. These yield speed-ups of somewhere between 100x and 100\,000x\, with unavoidable trade-offs in flexibility and accuracy. I will discuss applications of these techniques to model modern astronomical data\, including both industrial-scale modeling of galaxy SEDs and newly-possible directions such as spatially resolved galaxy modeling. Finally\, time permitting\, I will discuss some of the exciting new discoveries made with these techniques in the very distant universe seen by JWST.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:RCGD Seminar Series and Katz-Newcomb Colloquium Series: Mark Brandt
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Mark Brandt\, Associate Professor of Psychology at Michigan State University\, joins us at the University of Michigan April 21\, 2025\, for a talk co-sponsored by the Research Center for Group Dynamics and the Katz-Newcomb Colloquium Series.\n\nThe scientific study of attitudes typically treats attitudes individualistically. There are individual attitudes (e.g.\, preference for burritos) that vary in strength (e.g.\, central to the self)\, resistance to change (e.g.\, unwavering in the face of dietary information)\, and their relationship with relevant behaviors (e.g.\, purchasing of burritos). This approach misses a key property of attitudes: Attitudes are interdependent. \n\nIn this talk\, Brandt focuses on recent research from my lab that studies how attitudes are dependent on other attitudes\, identities\, and values within a political belief system. He presents the findings that (1) central attitudes of a political belief systems are stronger\, being more stable overtime and more resistant to change and (2) that attitudes become moralized when they are connected with other moralized attitudes in the belief system. In combination\, these findings suggest that the interdependence of attitudes matters for attitude change and moralization. \n\nThe goal of Mark Brandt's research is to understand the causes and consequences of political\, religious\, and moral beliefs that can ultimately be leveraged to reduce conflict and promote a more fair\, just\, and free society. He studies ideological and moral beliefs – such as political ideology\, racism\, religious fundamentalism\, and moral conviction – and how they structure attitudes and behaviors\, how they become moralized\, and why people adopt them in the first place.\n\nDavid Dunning\, organizer of the Katz-Newcomb speaker series in Psychology and an associate of the Research Center for Group Dynamics\, hosts. RCGD's winter 2025 seminar series covers a variety of topics in social science\, including social cognition\, structural racism\, romantic relationships\, and cognitive health. Check the schedule for updates to this series that will convene on select Mondays at 3:30 at the Institute for Social Research\, Room 1430\, and for listings to resume this fall.\n\nAs permissions allow\, seminars are later posted to the RCGD YouTube playlist.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Complex Analysis\, Dynamics and Geometry Seminar: Disintegrating curve graphs
DESCRIPTION:Curve graphs are crucial tools for studying mapping class groups of surfaces. However\, many basic questions on their geometry remain open. In this talk\, we will shed light on the geometry of curve graphs by describing “filtrations” of them by hyperbolic graphs. These filtrations yield quasi-isometric disintegrations of curve graphs into trees. As a corollary\, we provide a new proof of finite asymptotic dimension of curve graphs. Finally\, we describe some useful aspects of the dynamics of the mapping class group actions on the graphs in the filtrations.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Student Model Theory Seminar (Invited Address)
DESCRIPTION:Title: An introduction to infinitary first-order (and propositional) logic\n\nAbstract: What happens to first-order logic if you allow the logical connectives and/or quantifiers to be infinitely long? It turns out that many of the standard tools and results (e.g.\, compactness) either break or trivialize\, while new interesting phenomena arise. Indeed\, infinitary propositional logic is already quite interesting\, and is closely related to (in some sense\, equivalent to) topology. Moreover\, the interaction between propositional and first-order plays a central role in infinitary logic\, and leads to the application of tools from topology and group actions to model theory. This talk will survey a proper subset of these topics\, such as the Scott isomorphism theorem\, omitting types theorem\, and Lopez-Escobar theorem.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:The Twist for Positroid Varieties\, Part 2
DESCRIPTION:Last week we introduced positroid varieties and their descriptions through bounded affine permutations and equivalently Grassmann necklaces\, and talked about some relevant plabic graph combinatorics. In this talk\, we pick up from the boundary measurement map to give a parametrization of points in the positroid. We will then introduce the twist automorphism\, which will connect the image of the boundary measurement map to the nonvanishing information given by face labels of a plabic graph. We will then give a combinatorial way of computing twisted face pluckers from \"minimal matchings\" of the plabic graph\, which will turn out to be invertible\, hence showing the boundary measurement map is an open inclusion into the positroid variety over complex numbers.
