DESCRIPTION:This workshop is open to all graduate students seeking guidance on cover letters and resumes for positions beyond tenure track roles. It also meets the needs of those applying for internships\, including those applying to the Rackham Doctoral Intern Fellowship Program. The process of synthesizing your academic experiences into strong application materials for jobs and internships beyond academia can be challenging but rewarding. This workshop is a hands-on opportunity for graduate students to learn how to effectively develop a resume using the foundation that they have laid with information from their CVs. DESCRIPTION:“Swells with swaggering jazz\, raucous funk\, second line strut and hip-hop attitude… irresistible” –MOJO\n\nDrawing on the traditional jazz heritage of their hometown of New Orleans\, the Hot 8 Brass Band are renowned for including elements of funk\, hip hop\, rap\, and its local variation\, “bounce” in their music. The collective earned a win in the 64th Annual Grammy Awards 2022 for their feature on John Batiste’s ‘Album of The Year'\, following the nomination of their ‘The Life & Times Of…’ LP for ‘Best Regional Roots Album’ in 2013.\n\nTranscending genres and trends\, Hot 8 have performed and collaborated with the likes of Jon Batiste\, Blind Boys of Alabama\, Basement Jaxx and Alice Russell\, and provided live support for Mos Def\, Lauryn Hill and Mary J Blige. Since forming they have established a decade-long affiliation with actor/BBC 6Music DJ Craig Charles\, among other tastemakers\, DJs and journalists worldwide. After a festive appearance Live at Maida Vale for Lauren Laverne (BBC 6 Music)\, the Hot 8 Brass Band performed for Jools Holland's annual Hootenanny on BBC Two to welcome in 2019. Later that year\, after taking to the stage at the BRIT awards in February\, Hot 8 Brass Band were invited on the European leg of George Ezra’s tour.

DESCRIPTION:From September 2025 through August 2026\, Stamps Gallery is partnering in a curatorial collaboration with two Ypsilanti-based\, artist-run project spaces led by Stamps alumni: C.Y.N.K. Studios\, directed by Sally Clegg (Lecturer III and Student Exhibition Coordinator\, MFA ’20) and Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20)\; and Sometimes Space\, directed by Nathan Byrne (Lecturer I\, MFA ’21). Each space hosts dozens of artists annually for exhibitions\, performances\, and events\, fostering experimental work and building community. For this project\, Byrne\, Clegg\, and Narula have been commissioned to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the gallery. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:“Making Steel Knives from Sands Found on Douglas Lake”
DESCRIPTION:Dr. John Verhoeven is a metallurgical engineer\, U-M alumnus and Distinguished Emeritus Professor at Iowa State University who lives along Douglas Lake\, near the University of Michigan Biological Station.\n\nAs part of the 2026 Summer Lecture Series at the University of Michigan Biological Station (UMBS)\, Verhoeven will give a free\, public talk titled\, “Making Steel Knives from Sands Found on Douglas Lake.”\n\nSince retiring\, he has continued to do research with colleagues in northern Michigan. They recently found magnetic black sand on Douglas Lake\, reduced it to iron and made kitchen knives.\n\nTheir experiments measuring the composition of the sand in an electron microscope show that it comes from what geologists call OUI deposits of the Mid-Continental Rift. Verhoeven said the source rock from which the sand eroded — Fe-Ti oxide ultramafic intrusions (OUI) — was brought to the surface from magma in Earth’s core 1.1 billion years ago when tectonic plates separated. \n\nHere is a more detailed description of the lecture from Verhoeven: “Bladesmith Tim Zowada\, who lives near Petoskey\, smelts the magnetic black sand he collects on Lake Superior near White Fish Point into iron and makes knives. Working with Tim\, we discovered that the source rock from which the sand eroded contains Ti. This was a new discovery because geologists had assumed the source rock was the same as the iron ore used to make the Taconite which is shipped through the Soo Locks to supply US steel mills. It does not contain Ti. With the help of geologist Marcia Bjornerud\, we have shown that the source rock is what geologists call: Fe-Ti oxide ultramafic intrusions (OUIs). These rocks where brought to the surface from the magma in Earth’s core 1.1 billion years ago when tectonic plates separated and the mid-continental rift (MCR) formed. The rift runs through the Lake Superior region\, and our experiments show the Ti minerals of Tim’s sand matches the composition from OUI drillings collected near Lake Superior. With the help of my neighbor\, Mike Johnson\, we have recently found magnetic black sand on Douglas Lake and Tim has reduced it to iron and made a few small kitchen knives which will be passed around. Our experiments measuring the composition of the sand in an electron microscope in my shop show that it also comes from OUI deposits of the MCR. Douglas Lake also lies on the MCR. The implications of these results will be discussed.”\n\nVerhoeven grew up in Monroe\, Michigan\, and attended the University of Michigan\, where he earned a bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering as well as his master’s and Ph.D. in metallurgical engineering.\n\nHe spent his professional career at Iowa State University\, doing research in the DOE lab and teaching in the Materials Science Department. \n\nVerhoeven has published two books on metallurgy\, 220 peer-reviewed journal papers and obtained 18 patents.\n\nHe built home and shop on Douglas Lake in 1991 and has continued doing research there since retirement in 2000.\n\nThe University of Michigan Biological Station serves as a gathering place to learn from the natural world\, advance research and education\, and inspire action. We leverage over a century of research and transformative experiences to drive discoveries and solutions to benefit Michigan and beyond.\n\nFounded in 1909\, UMBS supports long-term research and education through immersive\, field-based courses and features state-of-the-art equipment and facilities for data collection and analysis to help any field researcher be productive. DESCRIPTION:New music!\n\nEsther Rose was on a long solo drive when she started writing the opening title track of Want\, her stunning fifth album. At first\, the words seemed almost like a joke\, something to keep herself amused as the miles passed. “I want a puppy\, but I don't want a mess. I want to know where I’m going without GPS\,” she sang from behind the wheel. Soon\, the idea snowballed into a list of desires that spanned existential\, spiritual\, and mundane\; romantic to platonic to familial\; at once wildly ambitious yet piercingly relatable\; all set to a catchy melody that blends her pop instincts with country storytelling and the raw immediacy of a basement punk show. In other words\, she was on her way to another classic Esther Rose song.\n\nThis precise blend has made the Santa Fe-based artist one of her generation’s most beloved songwriters: someone whose live shows are known to conclude in mass tears and group hugs. Still\, something was different this time. “For me\, these songs felt like revelations\,” she explains\, comparing the 11-song record to a memoir\, alive with kinetic storytelling and personal insight. In its newly direct and stirringly nuanced writing\, you’ll hear about rock bottom encounters\, shifting relationships with substances\, evolving perspectives on adult partnership\, and\, as evidenced by those early lines in “Want\,” a few jokes along the way. Vivid and bracing\, Want places you in the passenger seat while each of these feelings arrive.\n\nTo match the multi-dimensional tone of the writing\, Rose has made the most adventurous\, hardest-hitting record of her career. Working with producer Ross Farbe and recording live-to-tape in Nashville’s Bomb Shelter\, she travels as far as she’s been from the stripped-down classic country of celebrated early work like 2017’s This Time Last Night and 2019’s You Made It This Far. Following the wide-open serenity of 2023’s momentous Safe to Run\, she now leans toward confrontational arrangements full of distortion and full-band spontaneity\, never sacrificing a classicist’s gift for melody that makes each song instantly memorable.

DESCRIPTION:Many know Matt Watroba as the voice of folk music in Michigan for his work producing and hosting shows for public radio. He has devoted his life and career to being a custodian of American folk and roots music. This has helped shape a repertoire and presentation that is unique on stages across the state and country. He is committed to inspiring the world to sing-- one town at a time. In 2019\, Matt\, along with his life-long musical partner Robert Jones\, Co-founded the Detroit Non-Profit\, Common Chords. Also in 2019\, Matt was inducted into the Folk DJ Hall of Fame at the Folk Alliance International conference in Montreal.

DESCRIPTION:As part of the 2026 Summer Lecture Series at the University of Michigan Biological Station (UMBS)\, Dr. Bala Chaudhary will give the Bennett Lecture in Mycology and Plant Biology. The free\, public talk is titled\, “Continent-Scale Aerial Dispersal of Fungi.”\n\nChaudhary is an associate professor of environmental studies at Dartmouth College who studies mycorrhizas (plant-fungal symbioses)\, macroecology (continent-scale ecology)\, and movement (microbial dispersal).\n\nDispersal is a fundamental ecological process driving the abundance and distribution of species from local to global scales.\n\nSignificant knowledge gaps exist regarding the mechanisms of fungal dispersal\, especially for species that live entirely belowground.\n\nChaudhary describes the results of multiple complimentary studies that combine macrosystems biology\, trait-based ecology\, eDNA metabarcoding\, and data synthesis approaches to address fundamental questions in fungal dispersal ecology.\n\nShe also shares new methods her lab is developing to apply AI and data synthesis to make inferences about the ecology and evolution of fungi.\n\nChaudhary earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Chicago and her M.S. and Ph.D. from Northern Arizona University\, previously holding faculty appointments at DePaul University and Loyola University Chicago.\n\nIn her lab\, she uses trait-based approaches to develop predictive frameworks for microbial dispersal\, community assembly and biogeography\, and employs complementary approaches of macroecological field work\, controlled lab experiments and data synthesis to study multi-scale questions in ecology.\n\nChaudhary is a recipient of the National Science Foundation CAREER award and advises on continent-scale biology for the National Academy of Science\, Engineering\, and Medicine.\n\nPrior to academia\, Chaudhary worked as an environmental consultant in Los Angeles restoring drastically disturbed urban areas to create habitat for endangered species.\n\nShe is an award-winning advocate for antiracist strategies in STEM and the founder of WOCinEEB\, an international organization for racial and gender minorities in ecology and evolutionary biology.\n\nThe University of Michigan Biological Station serves as a gathering place to learn from the natural world\, advance research and education\, and inspire action. We leverage over a century of research and transformative experiences to drive discoveries and solutions to benefit Michigan and beyond.\n\nFounded in 1909\, UMBS supports long-term research and education through immersive\, field-based courses and features state-of-the-art equipment and facilities for data collection and analysis to help any field researcher be productive. Given that Ann Arbor is his ancestral home\, and the very place he and some like-minded souls formed Commander Cody and his Lost Planet Airmen\, Bill has promised not to wear you out with too much inscrutable new material. He has assured us that he’ll also bring some reminiscences with a good selection of songs from his checkered past. And as we've never been able to get him out of here without him launching into a few Dylan songs\, we’ll be on guard for that as well. What else? Oh yes\, he did say he had some home town Stories That Can Finally Be Told\, but offered no assurances that he will remember them. He also said\, tell ‘em I’m bringing my Texas band Rick Richards and Jack Saunders for the full Honky-Tonk Rock’n'Roll  experience\, and that I’m quite a bit jollier than that picture would indicate. \n\nGrammy nominated guitarist\, singer and songwriter Bill Kirchen is one of the fortunate few who can step on any stage\, play those trademark licks which drove the seminal Commander Cody classic Hot Rod Lincoln into the Top Ten nationwide\, and elicit instant recognition. Named a “Titan of the Telecaster” by Guitar Player Magazine\, he celebrates a musical tradition that embraces rock ‘n’ roll\, blues and bluegrass\, Texas Western swing and California honkytonk. Recorded in Zennor\, Cornwall\, the album was made with a strict era-specific approach. Imagining a record Michael Chapman might have made\, right down to the guitar strings. Grammy-winning producer Sam Okell helped guide the process: “If it didn’t exist in 1974\, you’re not allowed to use it.”\n\nBut this is nowstalgia\, not nostalgia. “I want something new\, but with the same ethos\,” singer Fin Greenall explains. There’s a parallel between the restless 18-year-olds Fink once were and the autumn-aged family men they are now. Touring remains a compulsion as much as a joy\, despite having played every major European city countless times. “The need to play your new material is so overwhelming that it trumps all the comforts and trinkets.”\n\nCity is a product of this hunger for discovery\, and idolatry of the album as a form – like we had in 1974. DESCRIPTION:Award-winning harmonies\, wacky Western wit and high-yodeling adventures\n\n40 years.  It seemed to go by in a blur\, pounding the road\, seeing the world\, raising babies and sending them to college\, mowing lawns\, romances\, marriages\, high school drama\, endless airports\, the nights at the Hollywood Bowl\, the night at the Red Barn in Louisville dodging various barroom projectiles\, frozen diesel lines\, blast furnace desert heat\, hours of practice\, late nights and early mornings\, and lots and lots and lots of laughter.\n \n40 years ago.  No laptops\, no cellular phones\, no Google\, no downloads\, no Skype\, no Tweets\, no Apple\, no Microsoft\, no texting\, no electric cars\, no Uber.  A different world.  But there were three young men with drive and wit who wanted to keep a special music alive.  They believed in preserving the heritage of Western Music and presenting it to a new generation.  They believed in entertaining\, and they did so… entertaining themselves as well as the audience!  And they believed in creating original Western Music to continue the tradition\, not just seal it in amber as a museum piece.  What they did not realize at the time was that they would be doing the same thing 40 years later.\n \n40 years ago\, Ranger Doug\, Too Slim and the late Windy Bill Collins played that first date on the bitter cold evening of November 11th\, 1977 at Herr Harry’s Frank N’ Stein Rathskeller in Nashville\, and small listening room dates followed.  By August of the following year demand was building\, and while Windy Bill left\, Woody Paul joined\, and the true professional beginnings of the band began at the Kentucky State Fair\, where the trio played 10 days for $2500- and bought their own rooms and meals out of that!\n \nA first wave followed\, including appearances on Austin City Limits\; recording contracts with Rounder\, then MCA\, then Columbia\; guest appearances on the Grand Ole Opry leading to membership in 1982\; and a three-year run on The Nashville Network with a TV show called “Tumbleweed Theater\,” which yet in turn led to a seven-year run on public radio with “Riders Radio Theater.  People Magazine\, interested in the Riders phenomenon\, ran a story which happily caught the eye of a Hollywood producer.\n \nAnd so the second wave broke\, sending the boys to Hollywood to star in “Riders In The Sky” on CBS for a year on Saturday mornings\, introducing them to yet another generation.  More recordings\, endless show dates\, and television appearances followed for a decade before the fine folks at Pixar called and asked the quartet – by this time they had been joined by Joey the Cowpolka King – to sing a tune called “Woody’s Roundup” in the movie “Toy Story 2.”  Thus\, the third wave began\, highlighted by a number of projects for Disney\, including two albums\, both of which won GRAMMY Awards!\n \nThe creation of satellite radio has recently given them a new platform\, as they continue to produce episodes of the award winning “Classic Cowboy Corral” on Sirius/XM.\n \nStill more road dates and recordings (several on their own Riders Radio Records label) and other film and television projects have filled the days and weeks and years\, and since the quartet has slowed up very little\, the numbers begin to add up:  an astonishing 7\,200+ appearances\, 35 years on the Grand Ole Opry\, 40 records albums (well\, now CDs\,) and tours of all 50 states and all over the world.  Honors accumulated as well.  In addition to the two Grammy Awards\, Riders received numerous awards from the Western Music Association\, including the highest: membership in the Western Music Hall of Fame\; numerous Wrangler awards from the Cowboy Hall of Fame and Western Heritage Museum\; awards from the Academy of Western Artists\; enshrinement in the Walkway of Western Stars\, and more.  What began as a celebration of classic Western Music and an evening of hilarity has become a career\, and that career has become a legend\, one which\, 40 years on\, shows no signs of stopping or even slowing down much.\n \nRanger Doug\, Too Slim\, Woody Paul and Joey the Cowpolka King… 40 years on\, “The Cowboy Way.”
