SUMMARY:Performance:Fink
DESCRIPTION:New music!\n\nThe City Is Coming to Erase It All is Fink’s ninth studio album\, following 2024’s Beauty In Your Wake. Recorded in Zennor\, Cornwall\, the album was made with a strict era-specific approach. Imagining a record Michael Chapman might have made\, right down to the guitar strings. Grammy-winning producer Sam Okell helped guide the process: “If it didn’t exist in 1974\, you’re not allowed to use it.”\n\nBut this is nowstalgia\, not nostalgia. “I want something new\, but with the same ethos\,” singer Fin Greenall explains. There’s a parallel between the restless 18-year-olds Fink once were and the autumn-aged family men they are now. Touring remains a compulsion as much as a joy\, despite having played every major European city countless times. “The need to play your new material is so overwhelming that it trumps all the comforts and trinkets.”\n\nCity is a product of this hunger for discovery\, and idolatry of the album as a form – like we had in 1974. City’s cover mirrors its interior\, the first song is the greeting\, the instrumental closer the conclusion. It’s a story. It’s a record for people who\, like its creators\, are curious. People who happily face a little cold for music\, who light a crackling fire back home\, who sit with these songs until they’re ready to chase after their own blue sky.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Muted Volumes: Book-Objects\, Patterned Papers\, and the Closed Stacks of Buhr
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit in the Clark Library rotunda focuses on handmade decorative patterned papers when exploring books stored at the library's Buhr Offsite Shelving Facility. Decorative paper\, noticed when walking through the stack's aisles or surprising you when you casually flip through a book\, can really catch your eye. But because the Buhr stacks are closed from browsing\, the density and dimensionality of its nearly 3 million books are reduced to title searches on a screen.\n\nAs a response to these reflections\, artist and library staff member Stephanie Osorio shares her handbound unopenable book-objects as symbolic stand-ins for forgotten books at Buhr — the books that don’t get a chance to be noticed. Along with the book-objects are the carved woodblocks that made prints to decorate them. Some books from Buhr that inspired this project with their original decorated patterned papers will also be on display.\n\nView the exhibit anytime the Hatcher Library is open\, and join us for an opening reception on Thursday\, May 14th\, 5pm - 6:30pm\, for an opportunity to hear from the artist and engage with the book-objects.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Resistance is Fertile: Celebrating 30 Years of Cultivating Change
DESCRIPTION:Resistance Is Fertile honors the founding moment of the Institute for Research on Women & Gender\, while speaking to the present. The institute was established because faculty members believed that research on women\, gender\, and sexuality required an institutional commitment to thrive. That belief was itself a form of resistance—to disciplinary silos\, to marginalization\, to the idea that such scholarship was peripheral.\n\nThis theme reminds us that resistance is not merely reactive\; it is constructive. When rooted in collaboration and sustained through infrastructure\, it produces knowledge that reshapes disciplines\, institutions\, and public life.\n\nThis exhibit celebrates 30 years of IRWG—its history\, its programs\, and the people whose vision and labor built it into what it is today. Through archival materials\, milestones\, and stories\, we trace the evolution of an institute that has continually expanded the boundaries of research in women\, gender\, and sexuality.\n\nThis exhibit centers growth\, collaboration\, and intellectual creativity—honoring the sustained efforts\, bold ideas\, and collective care that have shaped IRWG’s legacy and continue to guide its future.\n\nHosted and sponsored by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies\, U-M. \n\nLocated on the first floor of Lane Hall (204 S. State Street)\, the Exhibit Space is free and open to the public\, M-F\, 9am-4pm.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Up\, Up\, And Away: A History of Ballooning in America
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit examines the history of balloon flight in the United States from Blanchard’s first ascension to the early twentieth century. In the age of bird’s-eye views\, which imagined a perspective on American cities and towns from high in the air\, balloonists were the only people who actually had the opportunity to see what the growing nation looked like from above. As the nineteenth century progressed\, ballooning became a lucrative (if dangerous) business\, as crowds gathered to watch balloons launch\, and to see aeronauts risk their lives high in the air. Over time\, the image of the hot air balloon proliferated in American print culture\, being used to sell goods ranging from thread to canned beef. We hope that this exhibit conveys some of the thrill that would have come from seeing people fly for the first time.\n\nOn view May 22-August 28\, weekdays from 12-4 pm.

SUMMARY:Presentation:From clouds to streams: Modeling the lifecycle of star clusters
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\n \nStar clusters play a key role in structure formation because they mark a fundamental transition from structures governed by gravity to those driven by the complex physics of baryons. They emerge from giant molecular clouds assembled through the fragmentation and collapse of gas within galaxies. Massive clusters formed in the early Universe may survive to the present day as globular clusters\, which are fossils of early galaxy assembly. Less massive clusters\, on the other hand\, gradually lose stars via tidal disruption and ultimately dissolve into stellar streams that populate galactic stellar halos. Cluster formation\, migration\, and dynamical evolution are governed by different physical processes operating on distinct spatial and time scales. These enormous dynamical ranges prevent theorists from building a purely analytical framework describing the complete lifecycle of star clusters.\n\nNumerical modeling provides a powerful tool for disentangling this complexity. However\, no single model can resolve all relevant scales\, and constructing a unified framework remains an ongoing challenge. This dissertation presents my contributions toward such a framework. I first developed a semi-analytical model applied to cosmological simulations\, where clusters are tagged to simulation particles to follow their migration through galaxies. The model reproduces the chemical\, spatial\, and kinematic properties of cluster populations across a broad range of galaxy masses. To improve its prescription for dynamical disruption\, I developed a particle-spray algorithm calibrated against direct N-body simulations to trace the distribution of escaping stars. Based on this algorithm\, I developed an automated stellar stream-detection method designed to achieve both high purity and high completeness. Because streams are stellar debris of dynamical mass loss\, balancing both quantities is important for obtaining unbiased measurements of cluster mass loss rates.\n\nLooking forward\, parsec-resolution hydrodynamic simulations\, combined with deep space-based observations\, will constrain cluster formation in early galaxies\, while larger stream samples from next-generation wide-field surveys will improve models of dynamical evolution. Together\, these advances will ultimately connect the birth of clusters in the earliest galaxies to the surviving clusters and stellar streams observed today.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:In-person Arabic Placement test_August 13\, 2026 (10am-1pm EST)
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the Arabic Placement TestAbout the testThe test takes approximately three hours in length\, and it is composed of three portions:a. The writing portion is completed via Zoom and it is worth a total of 100 points.b. The reading portion is completed online through Canvas site\, and it is worth a total of 48 points.c. Right after finishing with the reading portion\, each student will have a follow-up interview with a proctor. The interviews last approximately 15 minutes and it is worth a total of 20 points.Important: a. Students who receive 60% or above will be placed in Arabic 401 and thus placed out of the LSA Language Requirement.b. Students who are not able to write in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) do not need to take the placement test and they will be advised to enroll in Arabic 101.Where can I view my results?a. Placement results are posted within 7 business days after the test.b. You will not be notified of your score automatically. c. You may view your placements via: Wolverine Access > Student Business > Academic Records > View Placement Exam Results.\nImportant information about the test* Placements are valid for only one year. If you fail to register in the course that you are placed in\, you will be required to retake the test.* Retaking the placement test is only permitted after the placement results expire.* Students who are currently taking an Arabic course will not be allowed to take the placement test. * Students who took or are currently enrolled in an Arabic course are not eligible to take the Arabic placement test. They should register for the next course level.* The test assesses students’ proficiency in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA)\, NOT colloquial Arabic.  * If you speak an Arabic dialect but you do not know how to read or write or have little knowledge\, feel free to register in Arabic 101.* Students who know some Arabic because they came from an Arabic-speaking household or have studied Arabic before\, must take the Arabic proficiency test in order to determine their placement.* Students who have taken Arabic at other institutions and wish to continue their Arabic study at UM must take the placement test to determine their level. Credits for Arabic study undertaken at another institution prior to joining UM or in a summer program while attending UM\, transfer in as generic departmental credits and students must take the placement test to determine credit equivalencies to UM courses.* If you place in or beyond the 401 level\, you will have satisfied the LSA language requirement. * Students are encouraged to take a placement test as early as possible in their studies in order to determine the level they should enroll in\, or if they test out of the language requirement. This is extremely important to avoid delays in graduation and complications with placement.* Arabic 101\, 201\, 401\, 501 are offered ONLY in the Fall semester\, and Arabic 102\, 202\, 402\, 504\, 511 are ONLY offered in the Winter semester.* Arabic 103 (the equivalent of Arabic 101 & 102\, combined) AND Arabic 203 (the equivalent of Arabic 201 & 202\, combined) are offered in the Spring-Summer terms.\nUM’s Arabic curriculum is a dual register curriculum in which students learn to speak and understand the Levantine dialect (the dialect of Jordan\, Syria\, Palestine and Lebanon) in addition to developing the four language skills of formal Arabic (fuSHa). \nIf you have questions regarding the placement test\, please contact the program director at\, mesarabicprogram@umich.edu.\n

SUMMARY:Performance:Raynes
DESCRIPTION:Sophisticated\, irresistibly catchy folk-pop\n\nBritish-American trio Raynes formed when Mat Charley and Joe Berger\, both born and raised in North Dakota\, came across a video of UK native Mark Race on Instagram and fell in love—first with his face\, then with his voice. After a few messages and phone calls\, Mark was on a plane to the US to start a band (a few months later\, he had the flight number tattooed on his arm).\n\nSince then\, Raynes has signed with Sony Music Publishing and released six singles and four EPs\, drawing hundreds of thousands of monthly listeners and tens of millions of streams and earning press in Billboard and People. They’ve performed at BottleRock Festival and in clubs\, concert halls\, and amphitheaters across the US and the UK\, developing a reputation as a high-energy live act.\n\nIn 2025\, Raynes’ rendition of “I Want You to Want Me” was featured in an episode of Love Is Blind on Netflix.\n\nKnown for their intricate vocal harmonies and unique instrumentation as well as their poetic lyrics\, Raynes has yet to come up with a good answer as to what genre their music falls under. With all three members coming from different musical backgrounds\, the boys combine their diverse influences to form a group that draws inspiration from around the globe\, incorporating elements of folk\, rock\, and chamber pop with Celtic and world music to create a wholly original—and difficult to categorize—sound.

SUMMARY:Performance:West Texas Exiles
DESCRIPTION:“While the band tends to describe its sound as Southwestern rock ’n’ roll\, you’ll also hear influences of Tejano and Conjunto\, the Pogues\, the British Invasion\, and even New Age — capturing the breadth of music in the Lone Star State.” \n–Texas Music\n\nFeaturing five musicians who grew up in El Paso\, Lubbock and Amarillo\, the West Texas Exiles draw upon the wide-open western reaches of the Lone Star State with a wide-ranging\, Americana-centered sound. Rising from the embers of the Dirty River Boys\, which Marco Gutierrez co-founded in 2009\, the Austin band features a triple-threat of songwriters in Gutierrez\, Daniel Davis and Colin Gilmore (son of legendary Texas troubadour Jimmie Dale Gilmore)\, plus seasoned bassist Eric Harrison and latter-day Dirty River Boys drummer Trinidad Leal. The Exiles' 2023 debut EP paved the way for their first full-length album\, 8000 Days\, due out later this year. The recordings build upon the live chops the group has honed through a weekly residency at Austin’s legendary Continental Club plus gigs at key local events such as SXSW and Willie Nelson’s Luck Reunion\, as well as high-profile touring appearances at Nashville’s Americanafest\, Braun Brothers Reunion and San Francisco’s Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival.

SUMMARY:Performance:American Patchwork Quartet
DESCRIPTION:“A breathtaking confluence of heritage roots\, jazz\, and world music influences.\" –Mix Magazine\n\nAmerican Patchwork Quartet (APQ)—founded by multi-GRAMMY® Award-winning guitarist and vocalist Clay Ross and shaped in collaboration with an ensemble of internationally celebrated musicians—binds timeless American folk songs with jazz sophistication\, country twang\, West African hypnotics\, and East Asian ornamentation. Their debut album was recently nominated for “Best Folk Album” at the 67th GRAMMY® Awards. \n\nA southern-born roots music aficionado\, Ross is also the founder of the world-renowned Gullah group Ranky Tanky. In APQ\, he collaborates with a core quartet that weaves dynamic guitar work\, Indian classical vocals\, and a jazz-driven rhythm section into a richly textured sound. Together\, these world-class musicians form a living patchwork of traditions and perspectives—united not by similarity\, but by a shared commitment to collaboration\, representation\, and artistic integrity. \n\nAPQ resonates as a potent symbol of unity through diversity. It stands as a testament to the notion that\, from a collage of varied backgrounds\, a coherent and beautiful whole can be fashioned. Mirroring America’s cultural mosaic\, APQ stitches together a story that’s both intricate and resilient. The fabric of their music is genuine—woven from honest collaboration and the pursuit of deeper understanding. Each carefully chosen piece explores America’s patchwork soul and highlights the joys\, sorrows\, and unwavering hope of a nation crafted by shared dreams and diverse histories. \n\nA deliberately designed homage to America’s past and a showcase of its dynamic present\, APQ beckons listeners to reflect on our shared identity and savor the musical threads that bind us. Just as an intricate quilt becomes a cherished family heirloom\, when the distinct patterns of APQ’s music align in perfect harmony\, the result is both a blanket of warmth and a timeless treasure.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Statistical Methods for Interpretable Representation in Complex Data
DESCRIPTION:This dissertation develops novel statistical methodologies that provide interpretable representations of complex forms of data --- such as sparsely observed functional data\, panel data\, and notably multivariate data. While flexible methods aiming to capture complex intrinsic structures with minimal assumptions have been previously developed\, they often lack explicit and interpretable representations. Here\, we develop methods that address this gap. \n\nThe first part of the dissertation develops a method that allows sparsely observed functional responses to be used in a sufficient dimension reduction (SDR) regression. An inverse SDR procedure requires conditional means of the predictors given the functional responses. To accommodate the sparsely observed functional responses\, we use local averaging of the predictors with weights inferred by an auxiliary Gaussian process model. As the procedure entails a nested moment estimation\, it becomes computationally expensive with a kernel approach that depends on pairwise distances between responses. We view the moment estimation as a numerical integration problem and achieve scalability via a coarsening approach using anchor points on the response space. \n\nThe second part of the dissertation provides a method for constructing an interpretable approximation to the joint distribution of two random vectors. The method first represents each marginal distribution in finitely quantized form. Next\, we use a transport-based optimization to probabilistically map jointly observed data to the Cartesian grid of marginal quantizations. Finally\, we marginalize over the data to attain a representation on the quantizations. The method ultimately yields an approximation that preserves the marginal distribution structures and provides an interpretable representation of the dependence structure. \n\nThe third part of the dissertation revolves around the analysis of multi-level and panel data via distance-based statistics. First\, we develop a framework for using energy distance on spaces of probability distributions to analyze multi-level data. We then extend this idea to the setting of multivariate dyadic panel data\, where vector-valued observations are serially observed within paired units. In such data\, we decompose the dependence structure into between- and within-pair components. Second\, we propose an infinitesimal perturbation framework with case- and variable-weights to elucidate the findings of complex statistical analyses that lack a directly interpretable representation. We use this framework to identify the cases and variables that most strongly contribute to the structures captured by distance-based statistics.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Special Particle Physics Seminar | Mapping the landscape of permanent electric dipole moments
DESCRIPTION:Permanent electric dipole moments (EDMs) are sensitive probes of the symmetry structure of elementary particles\, which in turn is closely tied to the baryon asymmetry in the universe. A meaningful interpretation framework for EDM measurements has to be based on effective quantum field theory. We interpret the measurements performed to date in terms of a hadronic-scale Lagrangian\, using the SFitter global analysis framework. Part of this Lagrangian is constrained very well\, while some of the parameters suffer from too few high-precision measurements\, theory uncertainties lead to weaker model constraints\, but can be controlled within the global analysis.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Conversations Across Continents: Manuel Quezon Papers
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a conversation across continents to celebrate the opening of the Manuel Quezon Papers online. \n\nQuezon (1878-1944)\, first president of the Philippines\, fought for independence throughout his career. Despite the importance of Quezon's archive\, improving access to the material has been a long journey. This digital collection is the latest step forward.\n\nThis conversation brings together archivists who worked on the original Quezon materials as well as scholars who have used the collection for their research. Interviewed by Dr. Ricky Punzalan\, they will explore the significance of the Quezon papers and what online access means for their future use. \n\n“The digitization of the microfilmed Quezon papers is an important step in making the study of Philippine history\, particularly the American colonial and commonwealth periods of the country\, more accessible to anyone\,” says Ricky Punzalan\, Director of U-M’s Museum Studies Program\, Associate Professor of Information\, and a Filipino scholar. “I am happy to see that [the Bentley] has made a crucial step to highlight its Philippine collections\, build partnerships based on consultation with institutions in the Philippines\, and collaborate with Filipino scholars.”\n\nSpeakers include:\n\nFe Angela M. Verzosa (Retired Librarian and Archivist\, one of the librarians who processed the Quezon Papers at the National Library of the Philippines)\n\nDr. Francis A. Gealogo (Professor\, Ateneo de Manila University Department of History)\n\nVeronica Sison (Ph.D. student at UC Berkeley Department of South and Southeast Asian Studies). \n\nPlease note: this event takes place in the morning in the United States and in the evening in the Philippines.

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:Merck Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Selective Synthesis using Light and Electricity\n\nThis seminar will describe our investigations into how organic radical ions–typically thought of as fleeting intermediates–can be tamed and exploited as a new family of organocatalysts and small molecule reagents. We identified selective generation of such species as a key hurdle stymying development of these systems. To address this problem\, we have leveraged electrochemistry to develop new synthetic transformations driven by organic radical ions. Electrochemistry offers not only an environmentally benign approach to promote redox events but also substantially simplifies the study of these unusual systems by enabling the exclusion of byproducts from oxidation or reductive generation of the key radical ion promoters. This seminar will describe multiple new platforms for synthetic reaction development based on electrochemically and photochemically generated organic radical ions.
