SUMMARY:Exhibition:Muted Volumes: Book-Objects\, Patterned Papers\, and the Closed Stacks of Buhr
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit in the Clark Library rotunda focuses on handmade decorative patterned papers when exploring books stored at the library's Buhr Offsite Shelving Facility. Decorative paper\, noticed when walking through the stack's aisles or surprising you when you casually flip through a book\, can really catch your eye. But because the Buhr stacks are closed from browsing\, the density and dimensionality of its nearly 3 million books are reduced to title searches on a screen.\n\nAs a response to these reflections\, artist and library staff member Stephanie Osorio shares her handbound unopenable book-objects as symbolic stand-ins for forgotten books at Buhr — the books that don’t get a chance to be noticed. Along with the book-objects are the carved woodblocks that made prints to decorate them. Some books from Buhr that inspired this project with their original decorated patterned papers will also be on display.\n\nView the exhibit anytime the Hatcher Library is open\, and join us for an opening reception on Thursday\, May 14th\, 5pm - 6:30pm\, for an opportunity to hear from the artist and engage with the book-objects.

DESCRIPTION:An exhibit at the Museum on Main Street that has marked 175 years of medical history at U-M with artifacts\, photos and documents will close August 30 after 11 months of welcoming members of the U-M and local community. \n\nThe museum has set special hours for its final days: Friday\, Aug. 28 from 12-4 p.m.\, Saturday\, Aug. 29 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.\, and Sunday\, Aug. 30 from 12-4 p.m.\n\nThe museum is located at 500 N. Main St. near the Kerrytown district\, in a historic house that was moved to the spot in 1990 from its original location near the Kellogg Eye Center on Wall Street. It is run by the Washtenaw County Historical Society\, which partnered with the Michigan Medicine Department of Communication\, the Medical School's Center for History\, Humanities\, Arts\, Social Sciences and Ethics in Medicine\, the Nursing History Society and the Bentley Historical Library to create the exhibit. \n\nAdmission is free and there is an accessible entrance at the rear of the building. DESCRIPTION:\n\nAugust 24 - October 18\, 2026\nExhibition Reception: October 1\, 1-2:30 p.m.\n\nIn their second year\, Stamps students complete a major milestone: Second Year Studio (SYS). It’s a course where\, per the syllabus\, students \"develop the capacity to work independently by identifying\, exploring\, and pursuing a single independent project that involves multiple iterations.\" \n\nStamps Lecturer & Student Exhibitions Coordinator Sally Clegg notes\, \"Each student takes their own path\, encountering questions that can shape the direction of their creative practice—how do I manage my time? How much constraint vs. freedom do I thrive on? What subject matter do I care about most deeply? How do my ideas about my future goals intersect with the work I want to make now?\" At the end of the semester\, students formally report on their experience in a presentation called the Sophomore Review\, and a faculty panel offers individualized feedback. \n\nInstalled throughout the Art & Architecture Building\, the Second Year Studio Exhibition showcases the art and design work created in this pivotal course by our rising third-year and transfer students\, and invites first-year students and other newcomers to explore both the building and the creative possibilities ahead. The show features 50 students who have volunteered to participate\, yet it honors every Stamps major who reaches the SYS milestone. The pieces on view span a wide array of media and capture a specific moment in each maker’s path: experiments in previously unfamiliar methods\, emergent passions\, creative risks taken\, iterations and reiterations\, and the seeds of so much future work.\n\nAs Course Coordinator\, Stamps Assistant Professor Pedram Baldari both teaches and works directly with all the faculty overseeing each section to collaboratively support the entire class. He offers this reflection on the diverse collection of work on view in this year’s exhibition.\n\nThese works engage a wide range of questions and concerns. Students investigate memory\, identity\, materiality\, ecology\, technology\, labor\, social relationships\, and the built environment through equally diverse formal approaches. While these subjects recur across the exhibition\, what stands out most is not a dominant thematic direction\, but a shared commitment to sustained inquiry.\n\nSYS is intentionally structured around a different learning model than project-based courses. Rather than responding to predetermined assignments\, students identify their own questions and spend an entire semester developing them through research\, experimentation\, critique\, and multiple iterations. The emphasis is not on arriving quickly at a resolved outcome\, but on cultivating the capacity to work independently\, remain responsive to new discoveries\, and allow the project itself to evolve through sustained engagement.\n\nAs a result\, the exhibition presents more than a collection of finished works. DESCRIPTION:This exhibit in the Clark Library rotunda focuses on handmade decorative patterned papers when exploring books stored at the library's Buhr Offsite Shelving Facility. Decorative paper\, noticed when walking through the stack's aisles or surprising you when you casually flip through a book\, can really catch your eye. But because the Buhr stacks are closed from browsing\, the density and dimensionality of its nearly 3 million books are reduced to title searches on a screen.\n\nAs a response to these reflections\, artist and library staff member Stephanie Osorio shares her handbound unopenable book-objects as symbolic stand-ins for forgotten books at Buhr — the books that don’t get a chance to be noticed. Along with the book-objects are the carved woodblocks that made prints to decorate them. Some books from Buhr that inspired this project with their original decorated patterned papers will also be on display.\n\nView the exhibit anytime the Hatcher Library is open\, and join us for an opening reception on Thursday\, May 14th\, 5pm - 6:30pm\, for an opportunity to hear from the artist and engage with the book-objects.

DESCRIPTION:Hailing from Kennett\, Missouri\, David Nail is well-respected up and down Music Row. Some might even call him a “tour de force” as his songs pull no punches in evoking the demons with which he has wrestled through much of his life. \n\nThe GRAMMY-nominated multi-platinum singer/songwriter’s early releases\, I’m About To Come Alive\, The Sound Of A Million Dreams\, I’m A Fire and Fighter\, ignited his reputation as an innovator and creative risk-taker yet left Nail feeling restless. This led to the departure of the only record company home he’d ever known\, MCA Nashville\, where he’d formed friendships that endure even now. Through dealing with his own journey of mental health and the feeling of needing to “rebel against what people expect you to be\,” Nail began making his most “organic” work to date\, David Nail & The Well Ravens\, with Jason Hall and Andrew Petroff. That project liberated Nail and propelled him into his next adventure. Writing solo for the next few months led to his debut solo independent EP Oh\, Mother\, a reflective piece of work. Of the title track\, Rolling Stone noted that “the song creeps in like a sunrise — quiet\, restrained cello and keys are the only underpinning for Nail’s powerful vocals at first. But then it slowly builds to something more massive and majestic.” That release was followed by Bootheel 2020 and Bootheel 2021\, projects dedicated to the singer/songwriter’s hometown in the “bootheel” of Missouri. Nail released an EP titled Best of Me in 2023 and the title track has seen heavy press support and country radio airplay. 2024 brought more touring than ever\, two great single releases “If I Could Call” and “Why” featuring Aubrie Sellers. \n\nNail plans on releasing the start of an excitingly different and elevated album project this year leaving behind any self-imposed restrictions. In Nail’s own words\, “My philosophy has always been\, I just hope to have a good enough year that I can have a next year while staying as true to myself as I possibly can.”

DESCRIPTION:A singer-songwriter known for his lyrical acumen and plaintive harmonica style\, Joe Pug dropped out of college and moved to Chicago where he worked as a carpenter before breaking into the city’s music scene. Since 2008 he has released a string of critically-acclaimed albums and toured heavily in the U.S. and abroad. Paste Magazine wrote of his music: “Unless your surname is Dylan\, Waits\, Ritter or Prine\, you could face-palm yourself to death trying to pen songs half as inspired.\" Additionally\, he is the creator and host of the popular podcast The Working Songwriter.\n\nSoon before Willie Watson turned 18\, he met God in an apple orchard. Or at the very least\, he met there a man named Ruby Love\, the older friend of a high-school buddy who had an enormous Martin guitar and a seemingly bigger understanding of the American folk songbook. Watson was existentially thirsty: A high-school dropout from upstate New York’s Finger Lakes\, he was fast on his way to his first heartbreak and in a first band that didn’t take itself seriously enough. But that night in an apple orchard that had always seemed magical\, at a graduation party for one of his bandmates and best friends\, Watson and Love sang a few of those old songs together—“Worried Man Blues” and “Tennessee Waltz.” It was the first time Watson had cried while singing\, the first time he had made the connection between making music and making sense of his life. He never saw Ruby Love again\, but within months of that foundational 1997 rendezvous\, he met the musicians with whom he’d soon start Old Crow Medicine Show. Call it revelation\, fate\, resurrection\, whatever you will\; for Watson\, more than a quarter-century later\, it was a duet with the divine.

His musical career and accolades are many and varied\, but include hitting the UK charts in 1979 (#28 on “the New Wave of British Heavy Metal” despite being a blues band)\, getting a cease and desist order from Walt Disney Corp for using a band name too close to that of a cartoon mouse\, opening for bands such as the Yardbirds\, the Animals\, Wishbone Ash and Nine Below Zero\, and playing in some of the most famous venues anywhere such as London’s Marquee\, and\, well\, The Ark! With formidable chops on guitar (she began playing at age 5) and piano (she was a guest on Marian McPartland’s Piano Jazz)\, along with a graduate degree in voice performance\, her shows are a one-woman master class in musicianship. Although best known as an acoustic songwriter that came up through coffeehouses and folk festivals\, the Chicago-based artist has written songs in the style of Gershwin and Cole Porter (I Can’t Be New\, 2004)\, gospel music (The Gospel Truth\, 2007)\, traditional Cuban “son” (An American In Havana\, 2016)\, and New Orleans junk piano (NOLA\, 2019). In 2014 she composed the music and lyrics to the musical theater score Bull Durham\, The Musical (MGM). Her songs have been recorded by Tom Jones\, Michael Feinstein\, and Shemekia Copeland\, and her latest recording of originals\, The Birds of Florida\, took flight in 2022.

The project honors women in a predominantly male fronted genre while featuring bands made up entirely of some of the best women and pickers in the scene today. While they began as a rock band\, Copeland’s music has explored multiple genres and pulled in various stylistic influences like electronic and symphonic. In the past the musicians have aptly melded these styles\, creating a unique amalgam of sounds. This time they wanted to take each sound and style and push it to its logical extreme.\n\nThe album is a strong step forward for Copeland\, who plans to continue writing and releasing music together for the foreseeable future. Between Heaven and Earth represents the latest chapter in that ongoing musical journey.\n\nTracked live over four days with vocals and instrumentation recorded simultaneously\, the album embraces what Witt calls a “visceral and eternal” energy\, one that “could never be replicated.” Guided by Henry’s vision and the chemistry of the musicians in the room\, the songs were created instinctively and in the moment\, with minimal overdubs and an openness to what Witt repeatedly refers to as “that place” — the transcendent emotional state she connects to through Transcendental Meditation\, prayer\, creativity\, and Lynch’s work itself.\n\nThe songs on Between Heaven and Earth explore themes of longing\, fate\, healing\, surrender\, nostalgia\, gratitude\, and connection through what Witt describes as a lens of “insistent optimism.” The title track embraces “a mystical connection with a brand new person\,” rooted in “childlike faith in the possibility” and the belief that “it does no harm to dream.” On “Artifacts\,” Witt examines “releasing ancient lessons that no longer serve\,” gently excavating old wounds and learning “how to love.” “Kindred” channels the feeling of “walls crumbling” and “barriers evaporating in a fabric made of light and destiny\,” while “Build Me A Dream” reflects on “constructing the reality we wish to exist in” and recognizing “an eternal soul connection.”\n\nElsewhere\, songs like “Freeze Frame\,” “Test Drive\,” and “Blue Moon” meditate on alternate timelines\, nostalgia\, and the peaceful acceptance of connections that were not meant to remain. “Thank You\,” featuring John Paul White\, transforms heartbreak into gratitude\, reflecting on relationships that “cleared the way for new relationships and opportunities to come in.” On “Love Anyway\,” Witt sings about unconditional love that remains even when unreturned: “The love is what’s important. It seemed to go by in a blur\, pounding the road\, seeing the world\, raising babies and sending them to college\, mowing lawns\, romances\, marriages\, high school drama\, endless airports\, the nights at the Hollywood Bowl\, the night at the Red Barn in Louisville dodging various barroom projectiles\, frozen diesel lines\, blast furnace desert heat\, hours of practice\, late nights and early mornings\, and lots and lots and lots of laughter.\n \n40 years ago.  No laptops\, no cellular phones\, no Google\, no downloads\, no Skype\, no Tweets\, no Apple\, no Microsoft\, no texting\, no electric cars\, no Uber.  A different world.  But there were three young men with drive and wit who wanted to keep a special music alive.  They believed in preserving the heritage of Western Music and presenting it to a new generation.  They believed in entertaining\, and they did so… entertaining themselves as well as the audience!  And they believed in creating original Western Music to continue the tradition\, not just seal it in amber as a museum piece.  What they did not realize at the time was that they would be doing the same thing 40 years later.\n \n40 years ago\, Ranger Doug\, Too Slim and the late Windy Bill Collins played that first date on the bitter cold evening of November 11th\, 1977 at Herr Harry’s Frank N’ Stein Rathskeller in Nashville\, and small listening room dates followed.  By August of the following year demand was building\, and while Windy Bill left\, Woody Paul joined\, and the true professional beginnings of the band began at the Kentucky State Fair\, where the trio played 10 days for $2500- and bought their own rooms and meals out of that!\n \nA first wave followed\, including appearances on Austin City Limits\; recording contracts with Rounder\, then MCA\, then Columbia\; guest appearances on the Grand Ole Opry leading to membership in 1982\; and a three-year run on The Nashville Network with a TV show called “Tumbleweed Theater\,” which yet in turn led to a seven-year run on public radio with “Riders Radio Theater.  People Magazine\, interested in the Riders phenomenon\, ran a story which happily caught the eye of a Hollywood producer.\n \nAnd so the second wave broke\, sending the boys to Hollywood to star in “Riders In The Sky” on CBS for a year on Saturday mornings\, introducing them to yet another generation.  More recordings\, endless show dates\, and television appearances followed for a decade before the fine folks at Pixar called and asked the quartet – by this time they had been joined by Joey the Cowpolka King – to sing a tune called “Woody’s Roundup” in the movie “Toy Story 2.”  Thus\, the third wave began\, highlighted by a number of projects for Disney\, including two albums\, both of which won GRAMMY Awards!\n \nThe creation of satellite radio has recently given them a new platform\, as they continue to produce episodes of the award winning “Classic Cowboy Corral” on Sirius/XM.\n \nStill more road dates and recordings (several on their own Riders Radio Records label) and other film and television projects have filled the days and weeks and years\, and since the quartet has slowed up very little\, the numbers begin to add up:  an astonishing 7\,200+ appearances\, 35 years on the Grand Ole Opry\, 40 records albums (well\, now CDs\,) and tours of all 50 states and all over the world.  Honors accumulated as well.  In addition to the two Grammy Awards\, Riders received numerous awards from the Western Music Association\, including the highest: membership in the Western Music Hall of Fame\; numerous Wrangler awards from the Cowboy Hall of Fame and Western Heritage Museum\; awards from the Academy of Western Artists\; enshrinement in the Walkway of Western Stars\, and more.  What began as a celebration of classic Western Music and an evening of hilarity has become a career\, and that career has become a legend\, one which\, 40 years on\, shows no signs of stopping or even slowing down much.\n \nRanger Doug\, Too Slim\, Woody Paul and Joey the Cowpolka King… 40 years on\, “The Cowboy Way.”

After releasing two independent albums\, I’ve Suffered A Head Injury and Pop Smear\, the group quickly garnered a regional following for its textured rock songs distinguished by innovative arrangements\, soul-searching lyrics and layered vocals.\n\nThe success of both albums attracted the attention of RCA Records\, which released their platinum major label debut Villains in 1996. The album featured the radio hit ‘Photograph’ and the #1 single ‘The Freshmen\,’ one of the most successful multi-format tracks of 1997 and winner of an ASCAP Pop Award. Just unsaturated\, unadulterated art. Real humans making real noise in real time.\n\nJoyRide is my 14th solo album (not counting the Rugburns records\, live things\, and bootlegs floating around). I tour nonstop\, so I usually have to be tricked into a studio under the guise of “just one song.”\n\nThe record opens with “If It Bleeds It Leads” — my kinda classic mischief:\n\n“I can never watch the news with you because you yell back — you scream like they can hear you in the television set.”\n\nThen comes “Petrichor\,” inspired by the beautiful smell after it rains. (I later discovered Phish has one too\, but mine’s the barefoot cousin at brunch.)\n\n“At It Again” follows\, a cosmic co-write with my brother-from-another-meerkat Jim Lauderdale\, featuring Bryan Owings and Chris Donohue (Emmylou Harris’s rhythm section).\n\nThe title track “JoyRide” feels like a warm hug after a long road trip:\n\n“Free hugs\, no shrugs\, wrong drugs\, bedbugs. Smiles\, laughter\, for here ever after.”\n\nSide one ends with “The Son Of God.” \nA nutso magutso  track of a conversation I  may or may not have had with Jesus.“ I get to play both parts. Myself AND Jesus.\n“The son of God contacted me about buying some Funk and Wagnalls encyclopedias. I said hello who’s this?”\n“It’s Jesus”\n“Jesus who?”\n“Jesus H. Christ. God’s son.”\n“How’d you get my number?”\n“I have everyone’s number.”\n“Even Liberace?”\n“He’s on dead people's speed dial.”\n\nI will probably get crucified for this song\, but hopefully it will be an AI video made by an angry man living in his mom’s basement. \n\nSide two kicks off with “Love a Little Bigger” — a rowdy co-write with Vince Herman of Leftover Salmon. It opens with:\n\n“Jacob took a hammer and he went up a hill\, built a nice house for his best friend Bill…”\nand ends with a singalong reminder to forgive faster and swim more often.\n\n“Fixin’ Up” (track seven) is my secret favorite — like a quarter from the Tooth Fairy you gotta dig around for.\n“New Tattoo” follows — about a dude who got his lover’s face inked on his own face. (Bad plan\, good song.)\n“Brand New Liver” imagines swapping out your old one like a water pump instead of quitting drinking.\nAnd then comes the closer: “Hairlift.”\n\nThat one has my favorite line I’ve ever written:\n\n“I used to play ping pong with my old friend Mao Zedong. I thought he told me I was well hung\, but he was speaking in the mother tongue.”\n\nThat’s JoyRide. DESCRIPTION:A holiday show and more\n\n2026 Christmas Tour Thoughts\n\nOne December\, not long after Over the Rhine began recording and touring\, we were invited to perform some seasonal songs on a public radio station. We worked up a few carols and traditional tunes. \n\n\nIt actually felt really good and conjured up an unusual mix of feelings from childhood: innocence\, loss\, wonder\, joy\, sadness. I think we were surprised.\n\nPeople must have tuned into the radio broadcast\, because we began receiving inquiries as to whether we had recorded any of our Christmas songs. \n\nIn December of 1996 – can it really be 30 years ago? – we recorded and released our first song cycle of some of the Christmas carols that still haunted us. We included a few original tunes and called our wintry mix The Darkest Night Of The Year. Folks began snatching up copies and seemed to agree that they hadn’t heard anything quite like it.\n\nWe began playing concerts around the Midwest every December and found that the rooms were usually packed full of people who had bundled in out of the cold. If you stepped outside during intermission\, you could make ghosts with your breath in the crisp night air. And it was dark – oh so dark: a time of year with its own music.\n\nA decade later\, in 2006\, we released our first full collection of original Christmas/holiday songs called Snow Angels. What is it about Christmas music and the undeniable gravitational pull it exerts on some songwriters? So many Christmas songs have already been written. I think we remain genuinely curious about the ones that haven't yet been written.\n\nWe continued to tour every December and these special year-winding-down concerts began to feel like an annual tradition – gatherings of extended musical family\, without whom\, we’d be homeless.\n\nWe released our third holiday album of original songs\, Blood Oranges In The Snow\, in December of 2014. One enthusiastic fan wrote to us\, I just love your new Christmas album\, Blood On The Oranges. We’re dark but not that dark.\n\nOn our 2026 tour\, we will be leaning into some harmonies and making an intimate but hopefully holy ruckus. It won’t be all Christmas music: we’ll certainly mix in tunes from many of our records along the way. On her new album\, Neon Summer Skin\, Bedouine\, the project of Azniv Korkejian\, explores this feeling of safety long before one can fully understand the concept. Written with vivid\, honest and intimate imagery after visiting her family in Saudi Arabia\, it tells the story of family and upbringing\, and mourns the end of her childhood. There is a singular resonance and newfound heft in this music previously unheard in Bedouine’s discography. \n\nBedouine is known for making gentle\, lilting folk songs that build fingerpicked guitar melodies into tsunamis of emotion. Her masterful songwriting and timeless melodies have earned her praise from publications like Pitchfork\, who said her music “boasts a surreal calm and lived in glow\,” and Rolling Stone\, who lauded her “humble folk-pop brilliance\,” plus an NPR Tiny Desk Concert\, and tours with the likes of Fleet Foxes and Father John Misty. \n\nAs personal as her songs have been\, they’ve often built upon universal experiences. The writing on Neon Summer Skin\, however\, is full of specific memories: a neon swim suit\, beads of water dripping down tangled hair\, the blood of a lamb\, often sacrificed at Syrian weddings\, oozing across the pavement. “It was the first time I had the inclination to write a record about one main subject which gave me a clarity and motivation I hadn't quite had before.” \n\nBedouine started working on the record after a trip to Saudi Arabia to visit her parents. She correctly assumed it would be her last one there because her family was retiring to Armenia. “For my 20s and much of my 30s\, I couldn’t sit still\,” she says. “I would pack my car and move to a new place. I was so curious about my own independence that it just didn't occur to me for the longest time to mourn the past. But after that trip\, I came home and was so devastated. I couldn't place the feeling immediately\, but as I started writing\, I realized I was processing that I wasn’t ready to stop being somebody’s kid. \n\nShe co-produced most of the songs with her longtime collaborator\, Gus Seyffert\, and wrote with the sweet pop melodies of Todd Rundgren\, Karen Carpenter\, and Carole King in mind. She also worked on a couple of tracks with producer Jonathan Rado with Michael and Brian D’Addario of the Lemon Twigs.  “It was important to me to try to approach some of the production of this record a little differently\, just to try something new\,” she says.
