Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. Hinojosa has created log cabin quilts to adorn the columns in front of Stamps Gallery. The log cabin quilts traditionally represent the warm hearth at the center of a home. This installation reflects on the interplay between home\, placemaking\, labor\, and intergenerational memories of migration. Rather than quilting cotton designed to softly embrace the body\, these quilts are sewn from outdoor grade\, UV-resistant polyester. The quilt is an ode to Hinojosa’s grandmother who illegally crossed the US/Mexico border holding her babies and her quilts. As she and her family drove across the United States to work in the fields of the Salinas Valley\, the quilts offered a safe space for her and her family. Hinojosa celebrates their resilience to her grandmother and elders while also drawing attention to precarity and violence experienced by refugees and migrants crossing the US-Mexico border in our present today.\nArtist’s bio:\nMichelle Inez Hinojosa is an artist\, educator\, and researcher whose work is informed by Indigenous and Latine/x/a/o studies. Born and raised in Texas\, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in both drawing and painting and art education with a minor in art history at the University of North Texas. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. She works with quilting\, bead weaving\, embroidery\, jewelry\, transparent film installations\, painting\, ceramics\, and sculpture to honor and explore the history of migration in her family and humanize the current discourse around migration still occurring at the southern border. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. Hinojosa has created log cabin quilts to adorn the columns in front of Stamps Gallery. The log cabin quilts traditionally represent the warm hearth at the center of a home. This installation reflects on the interplay between home\, placemaking\, labor\, and intergenerational memories of migration. Rather than quilting cotton designed to softly embrace the body\, these quilts are sewn from outdoor grade\, UV-resistant polyester. The quilt is an ode to Hinojosa’s grandmother who illegally crossed the US/Mexico border holding her babies and her quilts. As she and her family drove across the United States to work in the fields of the Salinas Valley\, the quilts offered a safe space for her and her family. Hinojosa celebrates their resilience to her grandmother and elders while also drawing attention to precarity and violence experienced by refugees and migrants crossing the US-Mexico border in our present today.\nArtist’s bio:\nMichelle Inez Hinojosa is an artist\, educator\, and researcher whose work is informed by Indigenous and Latine/x/a/o studies. Born and raised in Texas\, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in both drawing and painting and art education with a minor in art history at the University of North Texas. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. She works with quilting\, bead weaving\, embroidery\, jewelry\, transparent film installations\, painting\, ceramics\, and sculpture to honor and explore the history of migration in her family and humanize the current discourse around migration still occurring at the southern border. Alongside her artwork she maintains a writing practice to re-story\, re-make\, and re-claim the often subordinated narratives of Latinx\, Chicanx\, Mexican\, and Texican peoples. \n\nRecently\, Hinojosa was named an inaugural Creative Careers Artist in Residence at the University of Michigan\, she has also attended residencies at Mildred's Lane (Pennsylvania)\, Anderson Ranch Art Center (Aspen\, CO) and The Cedars Union (Dallas\, TX). Bromilow\, a doctoral student in orchestral conducting at the U-M School of Music\, Theatre & Dance\, will give a pre-concert lecture at 3:15pm to discuss the works on the program. \n\nThe performance will be about 95 minutes long and will be performed without intermission. \n\nIt will open with Toast of the Town by Quinn Mason\, which premiered in 2021 and will be conducted by assistant conductor Michael Roest. Described by the composer as “a festive and fun overture to an operetta that doesn't exist” it evokes light musical drama such as Gilbert and Sullivan and provides a suitable sense of celebration for the anniversary. \n\nThe showpiece of the concert is Anton Bruckner’s Symphony Number 8 in C Minor\, which premiered in Vienna in the composer’s native Austria in 1892. It’s been likened to a “cathedral of music” because of its grand scale and themes\, which draw from Austrian folklore\, the composer’s deep faith\, the music of Wagner and Beethoven\, and even current events of his day. These years of conflict reveal several aspects of racial anxiety that inform our contemporary experience\, including\, though not limited to\; racism\, fear of violent black revolt\, lynching\, poverty\, mass incarceration\, and competition for employment. The term “Red Summer” was first used by James Weldon Johnson to describe the violent attacks against black communities during 1919. \n\nThough the events of the early twentieth century seem to be remote and fading apparitions of an American past\; my work is concerned with the power and influence of our shared historical narrative upon the present. In many cases\, the newsprint images include the surrounding stories or advertisements. The combination of the landscape photograph and the reproduction of newspaper fragments (which invade the contemporary with a narrative from the past)\, is a rupture and a conversation on the timeline between past and present. Here\, we extend a cell cycle model originally presented by Gerard and Goldbeter [12] in order to capture the effects of E6 and E7 on key actors in the cell cycle. Results suggest that E6 is sufficient to reverse p53-induced quiescence\, while E7 is sufficient to reverse p16INK4a-induced quiescence\; both E6 and E7 are necessary when p53 and p16INK4a are both active. Moreover\, E7 appears to play a role as a “growth factor substitute”\, inducing cell division in the absence of growth factor. Low levels of E7 may permit regular cell division\, but the results suggest that higher levels of E7 dysregulate the cell cycle in ways that may destabilize the cellular genome. We additionally explore factors related to susceptibility to apoptosis in HPV-positive cells\, with results suggesting that while p16INK4a may be important in preventing apoptosis in such cells\, this is unlikely to be due to stabilization of the cell cycle. The mechanisms explored here provide opportunities for developing new treatment targets that take advantage of the cell cycle regulatory system to prevent HPV-related cancer effects. In particular\, suppression of p16INK4a activity may be a valuable target as an adjuvant to chemotherapy in HPV-positive cancers.\n\nAdditionally\, we present a novel implementation of the standard SIR epidemiology model\, refined to use partial differential equations instead of the usual ordinary differential equations. This enables the model to more easily consider factors like differing levels of vulnerability in a given population or different states of disease progression without needing to explicitly add more equations to the system. Case studies illustrating the use of this new framework are given\, and some speculation on ways in which this model may be made further abstract are included at the end. Neutrinos are also emitted in large quantities from the nuclear fuel cycle\, which has led to the emergence of applied antineutrino physics as a sub-discipline that seeks to make the use of neutrino detection in nuclear energy and security. Directly detecting dark matter and detecting MeV-scale neutrinos share many technological challenges\, which has led to synergistic research in the communities working in those two areas. This talk will first discuss an emerging approach to detecting neutrinos with opaque scintillators. By constraining scintillation photons to a small volume and extracting them using wavelength-shifting fibers\, interaction topology can be reconstructed with excellent spatial resolution. Originally conceived for reactor neutrino detection\, opaque scintillators can relax the material doping constraints and be functionalized for various rare event detection problems where backgrounds must be strongly suppressed. The talk will then discuss our work in detecting low-energy nuclear recoils in germanium and noble elements that have implications on the detection sensitivity of dark matter and nuclear fuel cycle neutrinos. These years of conflict reveal several aspects of racial anxiety that inform our contemporary experience\, including\, though not limited to\; racism\, fear of violent black revolt\, lynching\, poverty\, mass incarceration\, and competition for employment. The term “Red Summer” was first used by James Weldon Johnson to describe the violent attacks against black communities during 1919. \n\nThough the events of the early twentieth century seem to be remote and fading apparitions of an American past\; my work is concerned with the power and influence of our shared historical narrative upon the present. The upheaval of Red Summer occurred approximately fifty years after the American Civil War\, fifty years before the height of the Civil Rights Era\, and three centuries after the first enslaved Africans arrived in English colonies that would become the United States. \n\nThe project combines photographs of the contemporary landscape made at or near the site of racial conflict with fragmented selections of contemporaneous newspaper reporting (1917-1923). In many cases\, the newsprint images include the surrounding stories or advertisements. The combination of the landscape photograph and the reproduction of newspaper fragments (which invade the contemporary with a narrative from the past)\, is a rupture and a conversation on the timeline between past and present. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. How do existing residents of these regions feel about the prospect of new neighbors? And how do different types of messages on the topic\, reflecting themes present in common media messages\, influence destination community members’ attitudes toward climate migrants\, toward climate change\, and toward various climate mitigation and adaptation policies? \n\nAbout the Speaker: \nNathaniel Geiger\, Assistant Professor at SEAS\n\nNathaniel Geiger is an assistant professor in the Behavior\, Education and Communication specialization. He joined SEAS from Indiana University\, where he was an assistant professor of communication science at The Media School. Geiger conducts experimental and survey research in lab\, field and online settings that examines how people become motivated and empowered to take action on climate change and other environmental issues. Molecular complexes can provide well-defined molecular models that provide chemical insight into structure and bonding\, spectroscopy\, and reactivity of these often transient species. Synthesis of these complexes is often highly challenging\, and molecular design can play a critical role in enabling access. In a long-standing project\, we have shown that a modular family of strong donor ligands are able to enforce three-fold symmetry at metal ions\, providing a platform for stabilizing iron complexes containing metal-ligand multiple bonds. In early work\, we demonstrated that isolable nitride complexes are active in multielectron nitrogen atom transfer reactions to a variety of substrates\, including unsaturated hydrocarbons. Further elaboration of nitrogen atom transfer as a synthetic strategy has enabled the construction of new ligands and binuclear complexes. More recently\, we have successfully created iron complexes with other multiply bonded atomic ligands\, including oxo\, sulfido and carbide. The accumulating library of complexes provides the foundation for ongoing studies aimed at understanding underlying trends in the fundamental reactions of these multiply bonded atomic ligands.
