SUMMARY:Exhibition:Window Installation | Cosmogonic Tattoos
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the University’s Bicentennial in 2017\, artist and professor Jim Cogswell has been invited by the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology and the University of Michigan Museum of Art to create a set of public window installations in response to the objects in their collections. Titled \"Cosmogonic Tattoos\,\" his project uses adhesive vinyl images applied in saturated colors to windows in the two buildings\, highlighting the role of these museums in the life of our campus community. Through close examination of objects separated from us by deep chronological and cultural divides\, imaginatively transformed within our campus context\, this project celebrates the power of architecture\, ornament\, and material objects to shape knowledge\, historical memory\, and cultural identity.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Beauty Meets My Mess: Mixed Media Collage
DESCRIPTION:Re Kielar was born in Chicago’s little Italy neighborhood with her grandparents upstairs and aunt and uncle across the courtyard. Her world was very Italian\, and when she walked outside\, she felt like she was leaving one country and entering another. Ever since she was a child\, she has loved paint and texture and seen beauty in the most unlikely places. Her artwork expresses human emotion through drawing in ink with rough papers\, old book pages\, metal embellishments and natural objects. Each abstract collage is coupled with her poetry\, so each piece is a walk into her soul. She hopes that by sharing that which is broken\, we can find healing spaces that knit our hearts together.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Being There: Acrylic on Canvas
DESCRIPTION:John Dempsey’s large scale paintings bring together different environments – factories\, religious spaces\, government facilities\, public areas and landscapes – into single compositions. He visually chronicles and explores the complex combinations of environments that we collage together from memory everyday as we form impressions of the places we go. These paintings from the Glare Series present a variety of environments together\, all at once\, in order to visually chronicle and explore this complex circumstance of place. Dempsey’s studio is in Flint\, and he currently is an Instructor at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Timeless Instants: Still Life Photographs
DESCRIPTION:Originally from Kansas City\, Tina West discovered photography while studying sculpture. She sees her photographs more as paintings\, and her still lifes have powerful cast shadows and frequent light play. Influenced by Gerhardt Richter and surrealism\, West’s images communicate a sense of being\, connecting not only the objects in the photographs\, but also the viewer and the photograph. She draws inspiration from the objects in her vast collection of unique treasures\, and she speaks to their unreserved timelessness with maturity and wonder. All of the images in this exhibit were created using instant film in a 4x5 view camera.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:LACS Exhibition. #NoHumanIsAlien: Germán Andino's The Habit of Silence
DESCRIPTION:Reception: An exhibition of Germán Andino’s graphic history: The Habit of Silence (El hábito de la mordaza) \n \nHonduran journalist and artist Germán Andino’s harrowing work of graphic history depicts gang violence in the city of San Pedro Sula from personal and deeply humane perspective. The installation of his work as a mural in a central public space on our campus is intended to provoke conversation in place of silence. Much reporting on Central America depicts the problem of gangs and violence as far away and impossible to solve\, and the victims and perpetrators of this violence as essentially alien. With the hashtag #NoHumanIsAlien\, the artist and organizers invite reflection on a crisis of violence in Central America that has been exacerbated\, and in important ways created\, by policies originating in the United States. We hope to spark and enrich debate on our campus about current immigration policies\, including the cancellation of Temporary Protected Status for Salvadoran migrants and the asylum claims of tens of thousands of unaccompanied Central American children\, children who have fled the conditions depicted in Andino’s work. \n \nThis exhibit\, a large-scale comic strip along the halls of the second floor of Mason Hall\, will be open for viewing from March 19 - April 6\, 2018. \n \nJoin us for the opening reception with Germán Andino on March 26\, 2018 from 5:00 - 6:30 pm.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Border Crossers
DESCRIPTION:Students across campus—from LSA\, Engineering\, Art and Design\, and Information—will work with visiting artist Chico MacMurtrie during winter semester 2018 planning\, building\, and launching a 40-foot robotic sculpture that poetically explores the notion of borders and boundary conditions. The project\, led by the Institute for the Humanities\, symbolizes the humanities in action\, and the empowerment that can be achieved through working together\, overcoming obstacles and divides\, and discovering creative solutions.\n\nMacmurtrie is an award winning artist\, renowned internationally for his large-scale robotic sculpture\, whose work combines materiality and robotics\, the visceral and conceptual. His artist residency and interdisciplinary project \"Border Crossers\" encourages investigation of borders as constructed entities\, both embodying a simple curiosity to see what lies on the other side of a border (national\, architectural\, environmental\, etc.) and expression of a utopian desire to live in a world without borders.\n\nIn February\, MacMurtrie and the students will launch the robotic sculpture during two \"performances\" and MacMurtrie will give a special Penny W. Stamps Lecture. The gallery exhibition will include large-scale drawings which serve as plans and maps for MacMurtrie's visionary Border Crossers. Life-size robotic models will also be presented in the exhibition in conversation with the drawings. The models\, built by the all-student team with MacMurtrie's guidance\, are prototypes for the project\, offering preliminary steps in the workshop and the process towards realizing the large scale robotic sculpture.\n\nChico MacMurtrie is the Artistic Director of Amorphic Robot Works\, an interdisciplinary creative collective located in Brooklyn\, NY. MacMurtrie/ARW have received numerous awards for their experimental new media artworks\, including five grants from the National Endowment for the Arts\, the Andy Warhol Foundation Grant\, the Rockefeller Foundation Fellowship\, VIDA Life 11.0\, and Prix Ars Electronica. Chico MacMurtrie was awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship in Fine Arts in 2016.\n\nVisiting artist Chico MacMurtrie's residency and project is sponsored by the U-M Institute for the Humanities in collaboration with U-M Museum of Art\, Michigan Robotics\, Michigan Engineering\, School of Information\, Penny Stamps Speaker Series\, Stamps School of Art and Design\, and ArtsEngin.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:EXHIBITION ON VIEW: DRAWING CODES: EXPERIMENTAL PROTOCOLS OF ARCHITECTURAL REPRESENTATION
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition on-view March 7 - 28\n\nEmerging technologies of design and production have opened up new ways to engage with traditional practices of architectural drawing. The twenty-four experimental drawings commissioned for this exhibition explore the impact of such technologies on the relationship between code and drawing: how rules and constraints inform the ways architects document\, analyze\, represent\, and design the built environment.\n\nEach drawing engages with at least one of the below prompts that begin to expand the notion of code as it relates to architectural design and representation:\n\nCode as generative constraint. Restrictive codes often govern what is permitted and what is prohibited. Examples of this include building codes\, urban codes\, zoning codes\, accessibility codes\, and energy codes. How can such constraints become generative\, opening up opportunities for design and representation?\nCode as language. A code can be understood as a set of rules\, conventions\, and traditions of syntax and grammar that structure the communication of information. The discipline of architecture similarly has its own language of typologies\, taxonomies\, and classifications. How can drawing engage with such architectural languages?\nCode as cipher. Encoded or encrypted messages are intended to hide or conceal information. Likewise\, architectural geometries\, forms\, spaces\, and assemblies are embedded with invisible organizational\, social\, political\, or economic logics that may not be immediately evident. How can drawing engage with these latent meanings and messages?\nCode as script. A code can be understood as a script or a recipe: a set of instructions to be executed or performed by a computer\, a robot\, or (in the case of theater or film)\, an actor. Scripts often produce unexpected discrepancies between the intent of the code and how it is executed. How can drawing explore these open-ended processes that may not have a defined outcome?\nThe invited architects were asked to conform to a set of strict rules: consistent dimension\, black & white medium\, and limiting the drawing to orthographic projection. The intent is for this consistency to emphasize the wide range of approaches to questions of technology\, design\, and representation. Yet within this considerable diversity of medium\, aesthetic sensibility\, and content\, several common qualities emerge. First is the unsure link between code and outcome: glitches\, bugs\, accidents\, anomalies\, but also loopholes\, deviations\, variances\, and departures that open up new potentials for architectural design and representation. Second is a mature embrace of technology not as a fetishized end game\, but as an instrument employed synthetically in concert with other architectural “tools of the trade.” And finally\, these drawings demonstrate how conventions of architectural representation remain fertile territory for invention and speculation.\n\nAt the show's initial run at CCA in San Francisco\, an adjacent gallery featured work by CCA Architecture students in Kinematic Code\, a course taught by Clayton Muhleman that has been exploring procedural and robotic drawing techniques.\n\nPanel discussion Tuesday\, March 6 at 6:00pm in the Art & Architecture Auditorium\, followed by opening reception in the College Gallery. Exhibition on view March 7 - March 28.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Interior Streets
DESCRIPTION:Join us March 9\, 3pm\, for a reception and Carl Wilson in conversation with our curator Amanda Krugliak.\n\nThe \"Interior Streets\" exhibition features the work of Detroit artist Carl Wilson\, known for his stark black and white linocut prints. The self-taught artist sees himself as a documentarian of lives easily ignored in a world obsessed with materialism and celebrity. His work frequently highlights not only the strength found in conquering the everyday and mundane\, but also the pain and defeat of those not able to rise to the occasion. His love of film noir and pulp fiction novels from the 1940s and '50s has led him to experiment with minimalist animation and comic book illustration. He embraces the whimsy hidden in the darkness.\n\nCarl is the recipient of a 2013 Kresge Artist Fellowship and is an alumni of the historic Yaddo Artists’ Community. During his residency there he carved the prints for\, and wrote the book\, Her Purse Smelled like Juicyfruit\, a recollection of his mother’s life. Carl was named 2014 guest curator of Detroit’s Carr Center. Also in 2014 Complex Online Magazine named him one of Twenty Detroit Artists You Should Know. He was featured in Essay'd\, a monthly publication about Detroit artists. 2017 sees the release of a comic book\, the first installment of his graphic novel\, Dead and Lost in Detroit.

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:Media Studies within the Data Turn
DESCRIPTION:The capacity of modern computers to capture and store traces of human behavior along an unprecedented number of dimensions has created something of an epistemological shift in society\, with datafication emerging as a newly dominant paradigm for making sense of the world. With the move towards datafication—and the attendant algorithmic logics used to make sense of it—everyday life has become mediated in new ways. For media studies\, this presents a challenge to figure out where our discipline fits. What does this mean for our objects of study? Our research questions? Our methods?\n\nThis miniconference will bring together graduate students and faculty from the University of Michigan community with invited guests whose work grapples with the impact of data on media studies in order to grapple with these questions. This daylong mini-conference will feature three panel discussion\, each kicked off by a guest speaker who will give a 30 minute presentation about their work and the provocations it introduces about what datafication means for media studies. Three members of the university of Michigan community will give 5 minute responses\, and then all four panelists will participate in a group discussion. These panels will be open to the public.\n#DataTurn\n\n9AM: Coffee\n\n9:15AM: Introductory Remarks\n\n9:30-11AM: Panel 1:The Interpretive Uncertainty of Data\nKeynote: Caitlin Petre\, Rutgers University\n\n11-11:15AM: Break\n\n11:15AM-12:45PM: Panel 2: Decentering Data Futures\nKeynote: Anita Say Chan\, UIUC\n\n12:45-1:15PM: Lunch\n\n1:30-3PM: Panel 3: The Data Agenda in Media Studies\nKeynote: John Cheney-Lippold\, UMich

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Exercising the Eye: The Gertrude Kasle Collection
DESCRIPTION:Gallery hours are 11 a.m.–5 p.m. Tuesday–Saturday and 12–5 p.m. Sunday\; galleries are closed on Mondays.\n\nThis exhibition celebrates Gertrude Kasle (1917–2016)\, a key figure in the formation of Detroit’s contemporary art community in the 1960s and 70s. A pioneering female gallerist\, Kasle provided midwest audiences with a venue in which to experience avant-garde art from centers like New York City\, while also supporting and exhibiting regional artists. Featuring a collection of paintings\, works on paper\, and sculptures from the height of the Abstract Expressionist movement through the early twenty-first century\, 'Exercising the Eye' speaks to the relationships Kasle fostered with local\, national\, and international artists and her appreciation for artistic expression and experimentation. Critical voices from the last fifty years include Philip Guston\, Jane Hammond\, Grace Hartigan\, Jasper Johns\, Michele Oka Doner\, and Robert Rauschenberg. The exhibition offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore a dynamic moment in Detroit’s cultural history and insight into Kasle’s love of looking and learning.\n\nLead support for 'Exercising the Eye: The Gertrude Kasle Collection' is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, and the University of Michigan CEW Frances and Sydney Lewis Visiting Leaders Fund.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:New at UMMA: Paul Rand
DESCRIPTION:Throughout the second half of the twentieth century\, pioneering art director and graphic designer Paul Rand (1914–1996) was celebrated for crafting the brand identities of such American corporate icons as ABC\, IBM\, UPS\, and Westinghouse. Rand considered the designer’s task to be the symbolic communication of a company’s character. This recent acquisition presentation features the poster Rand created as part of IBM’s THINK promotional campaign. The design is a rebus\, or visual puzzle\, wherein Rand cleverly transforms the letters of IBM’s logo into pictures. The whimsical use of symbols encourages viewers to interpret—or think—in order to comprehend the company’s intended message that it values “insight\,” “industriousness\,” and “motivation.” The poster is part of a larger recent gift of archival Paul Rand objects donated to UMMA by Franc Nunoo-Quarcoo—professor in the U-M Stamps School of Art and Design and published scholar on Paul Rand—and Maria Phillips.\n\nThis work was recently gifted to UMMA by Maria Phillips and Franc Nunoo-Quarcoo.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Patricia Piccinini: The Comforter
DESCRIPTION:Australian artist Patricia Piccinini’s strange\, hyperreal yet sentimental sculptures are often rooted in her speculative visualizations of future species—beings transformed by\, or even created by\, developments in genetic engineering and technology. On view at UMMA\, \"The Comforter\" presents the likeness of a young girl whose appearance suggests a rare genetic condition causing excessive hair across her face and body. In her lap she tenderly cradles an udder-shaped\, eyeless creature—a possible reference to current experiments in genetically altered milk-producing animals. The encounter staged by the sculpture\, though curious and unexplained\, appears to be one of innocence and intimacy\, and suggests the potential for emotional connection between a diversity of beings. This theme is a common one for Piccinini\, whose work incorporates (often obliquely) ideas and questions about the ethical implications of scientific progress and the conflicts in our culture between the natural and the man-made.\n\nLead support for \"Patricia Piccinini: The Comforter\" is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Institute for the Humanities and the Institute for Research on Women and Gender.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Smart Manufacturing through Virtual Material Processing
DESCRIPTION:Smart manufacturing enables faster\, more efficient production and improved worker safety while also enhancing market competitiveness. To remain economically viable\, manufacturers must reduce their leading time while lowering costs and raising efficiency. Modeling and simulation are used currently to increase manufacturing efficiency as well as to improve the way products are designed. For example\, finite element models are widely used for designing parts and for predicting defects. However\, the technological future is challenged by a multitude of materials-related phenomena whose essential role often extends over many scales in time and space. That is why traditional modeling is being replaced by multiscale modeling\, which has become a paradigm shift in understanding the way we design functionalities of a product. Multiscale material modeling enables the prediction of the relations between structure\, processing and properties of complex materials. Multiscale modeling of materials enables the design of materials that have specified properties and performance needed for specific parts. It allows the simulation not only of the material\, but also of the processing of those materials\, and provides online answers of the structure - property relations during manufacturing. In this presentation the focus will be on integrated simulations of molecular dynamics and finite elements to bridge time and space scales in modeling materials exposed to complex stress\, strain and thermal states\, or complex large deformations. Two case studies of using such multiscale modeling will be presented\, namely ultrasonic welding and micro-deep drawing.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Tim Noble and Sue Webster: The Masterpiece
DESCRIPTION:Since the 1980s\, British artists Tim Noble and Sue Webster have been known for their shadow sculptures built from materials as diverse as scrap metal\, garbage\, taxidermy\, and sex toys. When light is directed at these assemblages\, they project shadows that are exceptionally accurate and intricate representations of other things entirely.\n\n\"The Masterpiece\" (2014) is a shadow self-portrait of the artists created from metal casts of dead vermin they collected and welded together into a ball. From afar the casts appear to be a stunning abstract silver sculpture\; on closer inspection the disturbing menagerie of creatures emerges\, only to change form again—as a shadow on the wall—into a precise and elegant image that is astonishingly different from the objects that create it.\n\nLead support for \"Tim Noble and Sue Webster: The Masterpiece\" is provided by the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, the Susan and Richard Gutow Fund\, and the University of Michigan Institute for the Humanities. Additional generous support is provided by the Richard and Janet Miller Fund.

In this work\, we describe a model-agnostic simplification to such conditional distributions when the selection stage can be expressed as a sequence of (randomized) convex programs with convex loss and structure inducing constraints or penalties. Our main result is a change of measure formula that expresses the selective likelihood in terms of an integral over variables appearing in the optimization problem. The region of integration can often be interpreted geometrically in terms of the normal cycle of the balls in the corresponding penalty. Using this change of measure\, we give a brief description of \"inferactive data analysis\"\, so-named to denote an interactive approach to data analysis with an emphasis on inference after data analysis.\n\nThis is joint work with Xiaoying Tian\, Nan Bi\, Snigdha Panigrahi and Jelena Markovic.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EIHS Workshop: Expectant Bodies: Gender\, Textuality\, Sovereignty
DESCRIPTION:This panel takes up “expectation” as both a structure of being in and knowing the world\, and as a methodological condition of producing historical knowledge. Stretching from twelfth-century England to late eighteenth-century St. Petersburg\, these papers ask: how did gender and sexuality shape what medieval and early modern people expected of each other? How do scholarly expectations shape the stories we tell? Featuring:\n\nHayley Bowman (PhD Student\, History\, University of Michigan)\nJoseph Gamble (PhD Student\; Women's Studies\, English\; University of Michigan)\nNicholas Holterman (Graduate Student\, Romance Languages and Literatures\, University of Michigan)\nWilliam Holden (PhD Student\, History\, University of Michigan)\nRuth Mazo Karras (commentator\; Distinguished Teaching Professor of History\, University of Minnesota)\nKatherine French (chair\; J. Frederick Hoffman Professor of History\, University of Michigan)\n\nFree and open to the public. DESCRIPTION:Dr. Meyer describes his talk in this way: “I will share some of my evolving views and opinions about the essence of the so-called 'Replication Crisis' in Psychological Science\, how it came to be\, what should be done about it\, and why this matters to both me and you. The presentation will be at least somewhat historical and idiosyncratic in nature. Prospective audience members should ponder beforehand what their own views on these matters are. In so far as I do not deal with all of the relevant issues mentioned here\, attendees may ask me at the presentation about particular my views.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Cultural Identity and Materiality at French Fort St. Joseph (20BE23)\, Niles\, Michigan
DESCRIPTION:Fort St. Joseph was one of many French colonial outposts established throughout the St. Lawrence River Valley and the western Great Lakes region in the late 17th-18th centuries to cultivate alliances with Native peoples. The result was an exchange\, amalgamation\, and reinterpretation of material goods that testify to the close relationships the French maintained with various Native American groups. Yet\, closer examination suggests that both the French and Natives employed material goods in distinctive ways to ensure survival and promote their interests in the colonial encounter\; borrowing was merely an expedient strategy. This interpretation shifts attention away from the amicable relations\, altruistic behaviors\, and hybridization that researchers previously posited toward an understanding grounded in more pragmatic forms of materiality that agents practice to ensure the persistence of cultural identities under colonialism.

SUMMARY:Meeting:Wittgenstein's Philosophical Investigations
DESCRIPTION:We write to invite you to a reading group on Wittgenstein’s Philosophical Investigations. This group will not require preparation prior to the meetings. The format of the reading group will be a slow but deep dive into the Investigations by reading aloud and then discussing the book\, section by section. We hope to make it through 5 to 10 sections each meeting. After the discussion on a section dries up\, we’ll move to the next section until the hour and a half of the meeting is over. This design is meant to accommodate busy schedules\, and it also should be amenable to varying degrees of familiarity with the Investigations and Wittgenstein’s other work.\n\nOur first meeting will be next Friday (February 2) from 1:30-3:00pm. Location: Angell Hall 3184. All interested faculty\, staff\, and graduate students are welcome to attend. RSVP to Bryan Kim-Butler (bkimbutl@umich.edu) and Ben Mangrum (bmangrum@umich.edu). If you can’t make it for the first meeting but are interested\, please let us know and we’ll add you to the mailing list.\n\nWe'll bring photocopies of the sections likely to be read and discussed each meeting. However\, you’re also welcome to bring your own copy of the Investigations.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Dance and Dialogue: Human Contact and Democracy
DESCRIPTION:How can the body be a laboratory for examining dialogue\, choice-making\, roles and habits? In this interactive workshop\, choreographer and King-Chavez-Parks Visiting Artist Eryn Rosenthal will share some of her research on the connections between a dance form called Contact Improvisation and the political writings of Steve Biko\, Ada Colau\, Paolo Freire\, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela\, Judith Butler\, and others. What can the body bring to larger discussions of dialogue-building\, inclusion\, resilience and empowerment?\n\nWear comfortable clothes and shoes that you can bend\, move and stretch in. No experience necessary\, and all bodies\, abilities and backgrounds are actively welcome. This workshop includes talking\, moving and listening.\n\nRefreshments will be provided.\n\nChoreographer and CEW Scholar Alum Eryn Rosenthal examines the democratic underpinnings of Contact Improvisation and the role of the body in transgressing previously legislated boundaries. She has worked with choreographers Sello Pesa\, poet Elizabeth Alexander\, and documentary theatre pioneer Anna Deavere Smith\, among others. Eryn’s ongoing series The Doors Project investigates transitions–political\, social\, intimate–through site-based performance in different doorways around the world. Eryn holds a BA from Yale University and an MFA in Dance from U-M\, where she also studied in the Ford School for Public Policy. She has performed and taught throughout the US\, South Africa and Europe\, and is currently teaching an interdisciplinary performance course at U-M's Residential College. She is delighted to be back at U-M as a King-Chávez-Parks Visiting Professor and Artist in Residence for Dialogue-Building\, Diversity and Inclusion Initiatives. www.erynrosenthal.com\n\nRSVP online at: http://events.constantcontact.com/register/event?llr=5e675vcab&oeidk=a07eey8tc4fd32ebb43

DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\n\nWe study a model of cheap talk with one substantive assumption: the sender's preferences are state-independent. Our key observation is that this setting is amenable to the belief-based approach familiar from models of persuasion with commitment. Using this approach\, we examine the possibility of valuable communication\, assess the value of commitment\, and explicitly solve for sender-optimal equilibria in a large class of examples. A key product is a geometric characterization of the value of cheap talk\, described by the quasiconcave envelope of the sender's indirect utility.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture: Tidal Tomography: What an Often-neglected Phenomenon Known as Earth Tides Can Tell Us About Buoyancy in the Deepest Part of the Mantle
DESCRIPTION:Earth’s mantle is a key component of the Earth system: its circulation drives plate tectonics\, the long-term recycling of Earth’s volatiles\, and as such\, holds fundamental implications for the Earth’s surface environment. In order to understand this evolution\, a key parameter of the mantle must be known\, namely its buoyancy. In this talk\, I will discuss how Earth’s body tide can provide fresh and independent constraints on deep mantle buoyancy through a newly developed technique called Tidal Tomography. This comes at a time when other interesting and exciting data sets sensitive to deep mantle buoyancy\, e.g.\, Stoneley modes\, have been brought to bear\, and we will explore our conclusions in the context of other recent finds.\n\nIn particular\, we will focus on two regions of the deep mantle known as the Large Low Shear Velocity Provinces (LLSVPs)\, the buoyancy of which has attracted much debate over the past few decades. Using a global GPS data set of high precision measurements of the Earth’s body tide\, we perform a tomographic inversion to constrain the integrated buoyancy of these LLSVPs at the base of the mantle. As a consequence of the long-wavelength and low frequency nature of the Earth’s body tide\, these observations are particularly sensitivity to LLSVP buoyancy. Using a probabilistic approach we find that the data are best fit when the bottom two thirds (~700 km) of the LLSVPs have an integrated excess density of ~0.60%. \nThe detailed distribution of this buoyancy\, for example whether it primarily resides in a thin layer at the base of the mantle\, will require further testing and the augmentation of the inversions to include independent data sets (e.g.\, seismic observations). Nevertheless\, our inference of excess density requires the preservation of chemical heterogeneity associated with the enrichment of high-density chemical components\, possibly linked to subducted oceanic plates and/or primordial material\, in the deep mantle. This conclusion has important implications for the stability of these structures and\, in turn\, the history and ongoing evolution of the Earth system.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Politics of Skin Color
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nHeterogeneity in skin color is linked to significant differences in life experiences both within and across racial groups. For example\, darker skinned African Americans have worse health outcomes\, lower incomes\, less education\, lower rates of marriage\, and even receive harsher criminal sentencing than lighter skinned blacks. Within political science\, the focus on racial groups as largely homogenous entities has overlooked potentially important heterogeneity within groups based on skin color and gender. Drawing evidence from the 2012 American National Election Study\, two online surveys\, and 67 in-depth qualitative interviews\, the following is clear: (1) Skin tone is a salient identity to a sizable portion of black people\, especially those with dark skin\; (2) Darker skin tone is associated with higher levels of support for more liberal policies in domains where darker-skinned people are often marginalized\; and\, (3) The intersection of skin tone and gender relates to stereotypes and perceptions of racialized policies. The goal of this line of research is to explore how skin color and gender inform social and political judgments\, as well as feelings of efficacy and marginalization from the political system. This work not only offers important implications for scholars and policymakers alike\, but also has implications extending across racial groups.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:2018 Robert F. Berkhofer Jr. Lecture: An Evening With Gerald Vizenor
DESCRIPTION:Native American Studies at the University of Michigan presents the 2018 Robert F. Berkhofer Jr. Lecture: An Evening With Gerald Vizenor\n\nBETRAYAL AND IRONY: Native American Survivance and the Subversion of Ethnology\n\nGerald Vizenor is Professor Emeritus of American Studies at the University of California\, Berkeley. He is a citizen of the White Earth Nation in Minnesota\, and has published more than thirty books including novels\, literary criticism\, cultural studies\, and poetry. Blue Ravens\, an historical novel\, and Treaty Shirts are his most recent publications. Vizenor has received many awards including the American Book Award for Griever: An American Monkey King in China\, the Western Literature Association Distinguished Achievement Award\, and the Lifetime Literary Achievement Award from the Native Writer’s Circle of the Americas. Prior to his long career as an intellectual and academic\, he enlisted in the U.S. Armed Forces\, during which he was stationed in Japan\; directed the American Indian Employment and Guidance Center in Minneapolis\; and served as a journalist for the Minneapolis Tribune\, where he reported critically about the activities of the American Indian Movement.\n\nThis event is free and open to the public. There will be a catered reception to follow the lecture. Literati bookstore will be selling Vizenor's books starting at 6PM and again after the lecture.\n\nThe Berkhofer Lecture series (named for a former U-M professor and founder of the field of Native American studies) was established in 2014 by an alumni gift from the Dan and Carmen Brenner family of Seattle\, Washington. In close consultation with the Brenners\, Native American Studies decided to create a public lecture series featuring prominent\, marquee speakers who would draw audiences from different communities (faculty and students\, Ann Arbor and Detroit\, and Michigan tribal communities as well as writers and readers of all persuasions). Native American students at U-M have consistently expressed their desire to make Native Americans more visible both on campus and off\, and we believe that this lecture takes a meaningful step in that direction. Additionally\, because of the statewide publicity it generates\, we think it is already becoming another recruitment incentive for Native American students. It goes without saying that the speakers we are inviting provide tremendous value to the mission and work of Native American Studies at U-M.

SUMMARY:Performance:Chastity Brown
DESCRIPTION:Tennessee-born\, Minneapolis-based Chastity Brown grew up surrounded by country and soul music. In the full gospel church of her childhood\, she played saxophone and drums and found her singing voice and a passion for music. Chastity has been called a banjo-playing soul singer and \"a rocking\, rolling encyclopedia of roots music.\" She’s been featured on CMT and NPR's \"Favorite Sessions\, and has been the subject of profiles in Paste and the Times of London\, among others. For much of 2016\, she toured alongside Ani DiFranco\, and she opened for Ani at the Michigan Theater in April of that year. She's an artist who can plumb the depths of sadness in a single note\, then release it in the very next breath\, mergine folk\, pop and\, soul in a whole new way on her Red House–label debut\, \"Silhouette of Sirens\,\" with a a poet’s lyrical ear and a soul-laid-bare quality. Back from the 2018 Ann Arbor Folk Festival\, Chastity Brown is a major new figure on the singer-songwriter scene.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Teach Out Series: Sleep Deprivation: Habits\, Solutions\, and Strategies
DESCRIPTION:Sleep deprivation is a silent epidemic. Since the invention of the light bulb\, we have obtained less sleep than our ancestors\, prioritizing work\, school\, socializing\, sports\, screen time – just about everything – over sleep. Sleep is viewed as compressible\, something that can be made up at any time\, but rarely is. Most believe this poses little risk. Unfortunately\, they could not be more wrong.\n\nThe truth is\, an adequate amount of good-quality sleep is critical to good health. Lack of sleep leads to deadly crashes\, reduces productivity\, and harms quality of life. Insufficient or disordered sleep can increase risk for ADHD\, depression\, heart attack\, stroke\, arrhythmia\, heart failure\, and early death.\n\nThis Teach-Out can be your first step in doing something about sleep deprivation. Learn how sleep works\, why it is important\, and what bad sleep habits are. Hear solutions you can start tonight to sleep better for the rest of your life. Understand strategies to help family and friends improve their sleep. Learn to advocate for the sleep health of your community. This Teach-Out is intended to connect learners worldwide to the University of Michigan in conversation around sleep deprivation.\n\nA Teach-Out is:\n\n-an event – it takes place over a fixed\, short period of time\n\n-an opportunity – it is open for free participation to everyone around the world\n\n-a community – it will be joined by a large number of diverse individuals\n\n-a conversation – an opportunity to give and take ideas and information from people\n\nThe University of Michigan Teach-Out Series provides just-in-time community learning events for participants around the world to come together in conversation with the U-M campus community\, including faculty experts. The U-M Teach-Out Series is part of our deep commitment to engage the public in exploring and understanding the problems\, events\, and phenomena most important to society.\n\nTeach-Outs are short learning experiences\, each focused on a specific current issue. Attendees will come together over a few days not only to learn about a subject or event but also to gain skills. Teach-Outs are open to the world and are designed to bring together individuals with wide-ranging perspectives in respectful and deep conversation. These events are an opportunity for diverse learners and a multitude of experts to come together to ask questions of one another and explore new solutions to the pressing concerns of our global community. Come\, join the conversation!\n\nFind new opportunities at teach-out.org.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Teach- Out Series: Free Speech in Journalism
DESCRIPTION:A free press is essential for a healthy\, vibrant\, democratic society. Yet public trust in journalism has hit historic lows in recent years and journalists have recently been openly maligned for their work. This Teach-Out prompts participants to think critically about the roles and responsibilities of journalists in a free society. Why is the concept of a free press written into the First Amendment? How are the rights of journalists threatened? Is this a unique moment in history? How have new modes of reporting\, such as social media and citizen journalism\, made the press more vulnerable? And\, finally\, what are the broader societal implications of a restricted and diminished press?\n\nThis Teach-Out is part of the University of Michigan 2018 Speech and Inclusion Series that aims to recognize differing views on speech and inclusion\, to explore how those views play out in politics\, culture\, higher education\, sports\, and journalism\, and to engage in productive conversations to promote a positive campus environment and help the community more deeply understand these complicated issues.\n\nA Teach-Out is:\n\n-an event – it takes place over a fixed\, short period of time\n\n-an opportunity – it is open for free participation to everyone around the world\n\n-a community – it will be joined by a large number of diverse individuals\n\n-a conversation – an opportunity to give and take ideas and information from people\n\nThe University of Michigan Teach-Out Series provides just-in-time community learning events for participants around the world to come together in conversation with the U-M campus community\, including faculty experts.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:TBP Grad Student Speaker Series: Training (for) Better Presentations
DESCRIPTION:**Note change of location**\nWe are excited to announce the launch of TBP Graduate Student Speaker Series: Training (for) Better Presentations organized by Tau Beta Pi for the College of Engineering\, a pilot professional development event funded by the College of Engineering and the Office of Student Affairs. \n\nTraining (for) Better Presentations is aimed at providing Michigan Engineering graduate students the opportunity to enhance their scientific communication skills\, so they can learn to effectively convey the \"big picture\" value of their research to a diverse audience. It also aims to engage a dialog of science and engineering research among graduate students across the entire College of Engineering.\n\nIntended as \"teaching through practice\" event\, each session is structured to have student speakers (2-3 per session) make a timed (15-20 min) presentation on their graduate research to a broad engineering audience and a communications expert panel (3-4 panelists). Our expert panelists will provide constructive feedback to the speakers (and the audience)\, highlighting the positive aspects of each presentation and also indicating opportunities for improvement. This structure will allow for the speakers to receive specific feedback on their communication skills\, while also providing the audience with generalized guidelines for good scientific communication.\n\nStarting mid-February and leading up to June\, we will be organizing multiple sessions for this event\, and we invite you to participate. The sessions will be held on Saturday mornings (9am - 11am)\, and will be scheduled to occur once every 2-3 weeks. Breakfast and coffee will be provided!\n\nIf you are interested in participating as a speaker\, please indicate your availability on the \"Speaker sign up\" form and the planning committee will follow up with you for scheduling. If you are interested in participating as an audience member\, please sign up through our TBP website on the \"Audience sign up\" link. Note: you be prompted to create a guest profile in order to sign-up as an audience member.\n\nWe look forward to your participation!

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:Washtenaw County Autonomous Vehicles Expert Panel
DESCRIPTION:This event is free and open to the public\, but registration is required.\n\nAs self-driving cars make the move from science fiction to neighborhood parking lots\, their impact on society has become a widespread topic of public debate. Across the University of Michigan campus\, experts have presented on the technologies\, regulatory issues\, and business opportunities surrounding Autonomous Vehicles (AV). Missing though\, are the critical perspectives and values of the community. This spring\, a group of students from the University of Michigan are organizing an opportunity for community members to learn about and voice their opinions on what is destined to be a society-altering technology. This type of event\, called a consensus conference\, enables the public to contribute to the discussion around technologies that impact their lives. To better understand AV impacts in our community we are looking beyond these experts to those who will be most impacted—the community members themselves.\n\nRegister here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/self-driving-cars-expert-panel-tickets-43942594483

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Saturday Morning Physics | Sound\, Shapes and Photosynthesis: Physics is Everywhere
DESCRIPTION:We also celebrate the Van Loo Saturday Morning Physics Lecture on this date.\n(Three talks in one)\nEntropy\, Shape\, and Phase Transition - Chrisy Xiyu Du (U-M Physics)\nUsing Femtosecond Spectroscopy to Illuminate Photosynthesis - Veronica Policht (U-M Physics)\nPhotosynthesis powers life on Earth. Following the initial absorption of light\, the primary energy conversion steps in photosynthesis occur incredibly rapidly (10^-12 s)\, making it particularly challenging to study. We'll discuss how carefully timed sequences of ultrafast laser pulses enable us to take real-time snapshots that improve our understanding of this critical process.\nThe Sound Heard 'Round the World' - Brian Worthmann (U-M Applied Physics)\nIn everyday life\, we as humans are used to sounds traveling anywhere from a few feet for a quiet conversation\, up to a few miles for some of the loudest sounds. But in the ocean\, a fascinating combination of physics allows sound to travel significantly much\, much further. We'll talk about how sound travels in air\, why it's different in the ocean\, and why this fact was a closely guarded secret during the Cold War.

DESCRIPTION:You're invited to participate in the Ann Arbor Art + Feminism (AAAF) Wikipedia Edit-a-thon\, a nodal event of the international Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon campaign. Please register to participate (https://www.eventbrite.com/e/ann-arbor-artfeminism-wikipedia-edit-a-thon-2018-tickets-42885467588) or stop by to show your support.\n\nWhy We Edit: Wikimedia’s gender trouble is well-documented. While the reasons for the gender gap are up for debate\, the practical effect of this disparity is not. Content is skewed by the lack of female\, queer\, and PoC participation. This represents an alarming absence in an increasingly important repository of shared knowledge. Let’s change that.\n\nPlease come\, and consider sharing invitations to participate with your networks.\n\nHosted by the University of Michigan Library in partnership with the University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA)\, the Penny W. SUMMARY:Film Screening:The Irresistible Joy of Film: The Early Works of Karpo Godina
DESCRIPTION:The late Sixties and early Seventies were years of prosperity and unexpected freedom in Yugoslavia\, with exploration\, growth\, fabulous art\, and incredible films (later dubbed The Black Wave) that opposed official socialist-realist production. In this brief period\, Karpo Godina stood up as an exceptional director of photography\, collaborating with Želimir Žilnik (whose Early Works Godina shot and edited) and Dušan Makavejev on their first features. At the same time\, he explored the possibilities and limitations of cinema in his own films. The still\, almost rigid camera\, each frame a perfectly composed photograph that suddenly comes alive\; the beauty of editing\; and the use of music—each element creates an unabashed sense of overpowering joy. A hidden\, titillating joy one feels when discovering any truly beautiful\, exceptionally simple and profoundly deep work of art—and an irresistible urge to laugh a liberating laugh. These films\, subversive and optimistic\, slightly ironic and never cynical\, celebrate life in socialist Yugoslavia while mocking the ideological rigidity of the ruling party. Shot all across Yugoslavia\, they represent the best of Yugoslav cinema of the time.\n\nThis screening is part of the Ann Arbor Film Festival. SUMMARY:Performance:We Banjo 3
DESCRIPTION:One of the best live acts to come out of Ireland in recent years is the multi-awarded winning We Banjo 3. With a seven-time all-Ireland banjo champ\, a four-time banjo champ\, and another member who is an all-Ireland champ on both fiddle and bodhran\, and with a passionate lead vocalist like a young Springsteen adopted by the Chieftains\, the result is unforgettable. On both sides of the Atlantic the word is out about this group! WB3 performed at the “Friends of Ireland” luncheon on Capital Hill attended by House Speaker Paul Ryan\, President Barack Obama\, Vice President Joe Biden\, and Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny\, and has headlined virtually every major U.S .Celtic fest for several years in a row. With a strong bluegrass influence\, the band is rapidly gaining favor in the worlds of bluegrass and Americana as well\, as evidenced by their invites to Merlefest\, ROMP Fest\, Sisters Folk Fest\, Old Settlers Fest\, Four Corners Fest and more! Scots band Talisk\, recent winners of the BBC Young Folk Award\, is special guest.
