DESCRIPTION:The Department of Linguistics Winter 2019 Colloquium Series continues February 15 with a presentation by U-M's Natasha Abner\, Assistant Professor of Linguistics. All are welcome. Light refreshments will be served.\n\nABSTRACT\n\nHandmade Events\n\nEvents in the world unfold in different ways and the way we use language to talk about the world reflects these differences. However\, a central tenet of contemporary linguistics is that language is not an “anything goes” kind of system. In this talk\, I’ll present a series of studies that explore communicative (and\, to a lesser extent\, cognitive) biases in how we talk about events\, focusing on what happens when how we talk about events is with our hands. These studies examine (a) abstract linguistic structures that underlie both sign and speech\, (b) modality effects that shape how these structures are manifested in signed versus spoken languages\, and (c) patterns in gesture that suggest certain phenomena may be driven by broader communicative biases and not restricted to language.

DESCRIPTION:Jennifer Uhle\, PhD\nVice President of Generation and Suppliers\nUS Nuclear Energy Institute\n \nAbstract: The nation’s energy grid is more diverse than it has ever been as the interest in clean energy and efforts to combat climate change have grown. Even as coal plants closed last year at a record pace\, carbon emissions increased more than three percent\, the second-largest increase in two decades. Nuclear energy can and should play a key role in addressing climate change. Nuclear energy provides about 20% of the electricity in the United States but approximately 60% of the clean energy. Other characteristics of nuclear energy can help address additional concerns of today\, such as energy resiliency\, energy security\, and boosting the U.S.’s geopolitical influence. From an economic perspective\, the nuclear energy industry provides a large source of skilled\, high paying jobs and contributes approximately 60 billion dollars to the gross domestic product. The nuclear industry plays an important if not fully recognized role in our society. To preserve and sustain a robust nuclear energy industry\, some of its attributes must be recognized by the energy market\, and efforts underway have resulted in positive action at both the state and federal level. At every plant in the nation\, efficiencies are being implemented and innovative technologies are being deployed to help maintain the safety of the plants while concurrently reducing costs. Attributes of the nuclear energy industry as well as industry-led initiative\n\nBio: Dr. Jennifer Uhle is Vice President of Generation and Suppliers at the Nuclear Energy Institute. Prior to joining NEI\, Jennifer was the Director of Reactor Safety Programs at Jensen Hughes\, a consulting company to the nuclear industry where she worked in the area of advanced reactors\, thermal-hydraulics and regulatory affairs. Prior to joining JENSEN HUGHES\, she served at the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission for 23 years in several positions including the Deputy Director of the Offices of Nuclear Regulatory Research and Nuclear Reactor Regulation and the Director of the Office of New Reactors. Jennifer obtained her B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in nuclear engineering from MIT in 1991 and 1996\, respectively\, with a specialization in reactor systems and design. She served as the U.S. representative to the IAEA’s first fact finding mission to Fukushima in 2011. She has over 24 years of experience in the nuclear industry.

Combining a masterful use of metal and textile techniques\, Nahabetian carefully constructs objects that simultaneously harness light while projecting complex linear shadows. A native of Michigan\, Nahabetian received his BFA from Eastern Michigan University and MFA form Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. He currently lives and has his studio in Orchard Park\, New York\, near Buffalo. Nahabetian has work in many public and private collections and has exhibited at a variety of venues for over 25 years.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Image Vessels: Blown Glass
DESCRIPTION:Sculptor Herb Babcock creates both monumental and human-scale work using metal\, glass and stone. In the early years of the American Studio Glass Movement (1974-1984) Babcock’s sculptural and painterly expression utilized the vessel format. By layering color — both mass and line — between gathers of clear\, molten glass\, the full compositions are viewed through the vessel as three-dimensional. Babcock is Professor Emeritus\, College for Creative Studies. He was Section Chair of the Glass Department where he taught for 40 years. He lives in Ann Arbor and built a new studio near U-M north campus in 2016.

DESCRIPTION:Sharon Will’s commitment to painting is to capture the simple\, everyday beauty around her in her native Michigan and beyond. She is passionate about painting plein air (outdoors) whenever possible\, as she feels the direct observation from life is the best teacher to truly see the subtleties of light and color in nature. Working on sanded paper\, her process begins with a pastel and alcohol/mineral spirits under-painting wash to establish value and color. Soft pastel is applied in layers\, often in contrasting color and temperatures for vibrancy. Over her 35-year career in painting\, Will has won numerous national awards. She also operates a custom framing business from her home/studio in Washington Township and teaches occasional workshops.

Although most of their artwork is textile based\, members use many different techniques. The theme of this exhibit is Inspired\, and the art quilts on display incorporate elements of assemblage\, collage and painting. The exhibit showcases the round robin approach that guided the creation of the work: the first artist made something which inspired the work of the second artist\, which inspired the work of the third artist\, and so on. DESCRIPTION:Gregg Chadwick grew up with the rails of America in his blood. His grandfather Arthur Desch stoked coal in steam engines before becoming a train engineer on the Jersey Central Line. At family gatherings in Chadwick’s grandparent’s home\, his aunts and cousins played music to the rhythms of the trains outside. From Junior Parker\, Elvis Presley\, Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash\, to arts writers and directors Greil Marcus and Jim Jarmusch\, the enduring mythos of America and its legacy has been wrapped up in the blues notes of the song “Mystery Train”. Chadwick’s current series of paintings\, Mystery Train\, is steeped in the powerful echoes of those machine days.

DESCRIPTION:This exhibition features a selection of Elena Weissman’s hand-built ceramic teapots created over the last two decades. The teapots are playful interpretations of many everyday objects. In addition to ceramics and photography\, Weismann works in paper arts\, book making\, fused glass\, beads\, mosaics\, metalwork and painting. Her photography can be seen in several professional buildings in the Detroit metropolitan area\, as well as in many personal collections. In addition to participating in art exhibits and juried art shows\, she has also created commissioned works in glass mosaics as well as a number of large custom ceramic tile art installations.

DESCRIPTION:Ruth Crowe graduated from Texas Woman’s University in Denton\, Texas with a degree in Art Education. She served in the US Army and was a Los Angeles Police Dept. officer and collegiate softball coach. In 2014\, in her Ann Arbor backyard studio\, Crowe began her current work with encaustics and image transfer processes. She creates her multi-media works by combining personal and vintage photography with wax on wood. In addition to exhibiting her work in Ann Arbor and Toledo\, Ohio\, Crowe also shows at the Water Street Gallery in Douglas\, Michigan. In 2018\, Crowe presented her work at the Ann Arbor Art Fair\, the Original.

DESCRIPTION:The Yankee Air Museum dedicates itself to educating individuals about the history of US military aviation. Located at the historic Willow Run Airport\, just east of Ann Arbor\, where over 8\,600 B-24 Liberator Bomber aircraft were produced during World War II\, the Yankee Air Museum seeks to keep the history of the ‘Arsenal of Democracy’ alive. The Willow Run Bomber Plant is home to ‘Rosie the Riveter\,’ the iconic symbol of the thousands of women who poured into industrial factories to help the war effort during WWII. This exhibition features unique artifacts from the US home-front\, the Willow Run Bomber Plant\, and local WWII aviators from Ann Arbor.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Written Culture of Christian Egypt: Coptic Manuscripts from the University of Michigan Collection
DESCRIPTION:The dry climate of the Egyptian desert offers an ideal environment for the preservation of ancient artifacts. As the sands of Egypt has preserved also numerous Coptic manuscripts\, the transmission of the literary heritage of Egyptian Christians can be documented quite well from its beginnings in the 4th century CE until its decline in the 12th-13th centuries CE\, when it was completely superseded by Arabic. This exhibit aims to show some of the hallmarks of Coptic literature using manuscripts kept in the Special Collections Research Center of the University of Michigan Library. Topics explored include the main Coptic dialects\; bilingualism in Egypt\; books read by the Egyptian monks\; and the works of Shenoute the Great\, the most important author of Coptic literature.\n\nThis exhibit is curated by Dr. Frank Feder and Dr. Alin Suciu from the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities. The exhibit and related programming are offered with support from the Department of Middle East Studies and the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology.\n\nJoin us for an opening lecture and reception at 4:30 p.m. on November 12 in the Hatcher Library Gallery.

DESCRIPTION:Please see the program below (under \"Web and Social\") for complete event details.\n\nThe 2019 Charles F. Fraker Conference at the University of Michigan will take as its point of departure the complicated interactions of space\, place\, and mapping\, in all of their contexts. This conference hopes to both clarify and complicate the notion of spatiality which arose during what Foucault referred to as the “epoch of space” and has continued to develop after the “spatial turn” in the humanities at the end of the 20th century. Further\, we hope with this conference to place a focus on geocriticism\, a term developed in part by Robert Tally\, Jr.\, whom we are delighted to welcome as our keynote speaker.\n\nThe broad understandings and implications of space do not permit a facile definition nor do they warrant one. Instead of conceptualizing space as a backdrop for historicism\, modern critics choose to regard space as an actor with significant agency. The goal of this conference is not to effect a common definition of the complexities of space\, but rather to embrace these intricacies through dialogue. As we know\, physical space is ubiquitous and\, at times\, unremarkable or invisible. It can welcome us or alienate us\; place us at the center\, in the margins\, in between\, or beyond\; facilitate or hinder our movement\, choices\, and behavior\; and influence our very thoughts. It follows that our work is similarly affected by spatial concerns. What can we learn from the spaces created by cultural production?​ ​How does space affect the production of knowledge? How does space relate to power\, or to memory\, or to narrative?\nThis year\, we welcome panelists from Brown\, Concordia (Montréal)\, CUNY\, Emory\, Purdue\, Rutgers\, SUNY–Buffalo\, Texas State\, UCSB\, UAlberta\, UChicago\, UVirginia\, UW–Madison\, and UT–Austin\, as well as our own University of Michigan. In recent years\, papers have been given in different Romance languages as well as in English\; 2019 will be no exception as our program includes panelists from across languages and disciplines.\n\nThe conference will take place on the 15-16th February 2019 at the University of Michigan–Ann Arbor. SUMMARY:Exhibition:What Are Little Books Made Of?
DESCRIPTION:The Special Collections Research Center is excited to display a variety of nineteenth and twentieth century children's books made of cloth and related materials.\n\nThe market for children’s books expanded over the course of the nineteenth century\, as childhood mortality rates dropped and literacy rates rose. British and American publishers sought to create “indestructible” books that would appeal to the parents and teachers of very young children. Linen and muslin proved to be practical and appealing materials for such books\, which were usually printed with bright colors and comparatively little text.\n\nCloth books remained popular for almost a century before the cloth rationing of World War II shifted production towards heavy-duty paper substitutes\, such as “linenette.”

DESCRIPTION:Can abstract art be about politics? In the early 1970s\, that question was hotly debated as artists\, critics\, and the public grappled with the relationship between art\, politics\, race\, and feminism. Many of those debates centered on bringing to light the roles that gender and race played in how “great modern art” was defined and assessed\, and on employing art to advance civil rights. Within this discourse\, abstraction had an especially fraught role. To many\, the decision by women artists and artists of color  to make abstract art seemed to represent a retreat from politics and protest: an abnegation of a commitment to civil rights and feminism. \"Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s\" presents large-scale work by four leading American artists—Helen Frankenthaler\, Sam Gilliam\, Al Loving\, and Louise Nevelson—who chose abstraction as a means of expression within the intense political climate of the early 1970s.\n\nLead support for \"Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s\" is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund\, the Herbert W. and Susan L. DESCRIPTION:Marisa Morán Jahn: The Mighty and the Mythic\nJanuary 24\, 2019 – March 2\, 2019\n\nStamps Gallery is proud to present The Mighty and the Mythic\, a solo exhibition of work by renowned social practice artist Marisa Morán Jahn. For the first time\, The Mighty and the Mythic brings together three key projects — CareForce (2012– ongoing)\, Bibliobandido (2010–ongoing)\, and MIRROR | MASK (2017–ongoing) — that highlight her deep and meaningful collaborations with low-wage immigrants\, caregivers\, and youth. Jahn describes her use of play and humor as essential tools that enable her and her collaborators to portray their lives with dignity\, critique power\, and build momentum within their community. Jahn’s practice is deeply informed by her own experiences growing up as a second-generation immigrant of Chinese and Ecuadorian heritage. For Jahn home was not a fixed place but an adaptation itself. Her varied vocational past as a schoolteacher\, caretaker\, woodshop cleaner-upper\, lumber hauler\, community organizer\, and now university professor and mother informs the urgency in her work to find common ground between (her-)self and (an-)other\, through the concepts of care and empathy. Each of the works in this exhibition highlights her deep engagement with the stories of everyday people\, mundane routines\, and a desire to build an inclusive society. DESCRIPTION:Neal Anderson is a trumpeter\, improviser\, and composer based in Detroit\, MI. He is a member of the Ann Arbor-based group\, Rhyta Musik\, and his debut album as a leader\, Parallel Fifths\, was featured on CW50's Detroit Proud playlist. His compositions pay melodic homage to Lee Morgan and Roy Hargrove while establishing a wistful\, sometimes playful\, but always thoughtfully distinctive voice of his own. Neal earned a BFA in Jazz Performance in 2014 from the University of Michigan\, where he studied with Bill Lucas\, Andrew Bishop\, and Robert Hurst. \n \nJon Hammonds is a bass player based in Ann Arbor. Active in jazz and improvised music\, Jonathan is also currently a member of the Ann Arbor Symphony and the National Arb Orchestra. A native of Michigan\, Nahabetian received his BFA from Eastern Michigan University and MFA form Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Image Vessels: Blown Glass
DESCRIPTION:Sculptor Herb Babcock creates both monumental and human-scale work using metal\, glass and stone. In the early years of the American Studio Glass Movement (1974-1984) Babcock’s sculptural and painterly expression utilized the vessel format. By layering color — both mass and line — between gathers of clear\, molten glass\, the full compositions are viewed through the vessel as three-dimensional. Babcock is Professor Emeritus\, College for Creative Studies. He was Section Chair of the Glass Department where he taught for 40 years. He lives in Ann Arbor and built a new studio near U-M north campus in 2016.

DESCRIPTION:Sharon Will’s commitment to painting is to capture the simple\, everyday beauty around her in her native Michigan and beyond. She is passionate about painting plein air (outdoors) whenever possible\, as she feels the direct observation from life is the best teacher to truly see the subtleties of light and color in nature. Working on sanded paper\, her process begins with a pastel and alcohol/mineral spirits under-painting wash to establish value and color. Soft pastel is applied in layers\, often in contrasting color and temperatures for vibrancy. Over her 35-year career in painting\, Will has won numerous national awards. She also operates a custom framing business from her home/studio in Washington Township and teaches occasional workshops.

DESCRIPTION:Gregg Chadwick grew up with the rails of America in his blood. His grandfather Arthur Desch stoked coal in steam engines before becoming a train engineer on the Jersey Central Line. At family gatherings in Chadwick’s grandparent’s home\, his aunts and cousins played music to the rhythms of the trains outside. From Junior Parker\, Elvis Presley\, Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash\, to arts writers and directors Greil Marcus and Jim Jarmusch\, the enduring mythos of America and its legacy has been wrapped up in the blues notes of the song “Mystery Train”. Chadwick’s current series of paintings\, Mystery Train\, is steeped in the powerful echoes of those machine days.

DESCRIPTION:This exhibition features a selection of Elena Weissman’s hand-built ceramic teapots created over the last two decades. The teapots are playful interpretations of many everyday objects. In addition to ceramics and photography\, Weismann works in paper arts\, book making\, fused glass\, beads\, mosaics\, metalwork and painting. Her photography can be seen in several professional buildings in the Detroit metropolitan area\, as well as in many personal collections. DESCRIPTION:Ruth Crowe graduated from Texas Woman’s University in Denton\, Texas with a degree in Art Education. She served in the US Army and was a Los Angeles Police Dept. officer and collegiate softball coach. In 2014\, in her Ann Arbor backyard studio\, Crowe began her current work with encaustics and image transfer processes. She creates her multi-media works by combining personal and vintage photography with wax on wood. In addition to exhibiting her work in Ann Arbor and Toledo\, Ohio\, Crowe also shows at the Water Street Gallery in Douglas\, Michigan. In 2018\, Crowe presented her work at the Ann Arbor Art Fair\, the Original.

DESCRIPTION:The Yankee Air Museum dedicates itself to educating individuals about the history of US military aviation. Located at the historic Willow Run Airport\, just east of Ann Arbor\, where over 8\,600 B-24 Liberator Bomber aircraft were produced during World War II\, the Yankee Air Museum seeks to keep the history of the ‘Arsenal of Democracy’ alive. The Willow Run Bomber Plant is home to ‘Rosie the Riveter\,’ the iconic symbol of the thousands of women who poured into industrial factories to help the war effort during WWII. This exhibition features unique artifacts from the US home-front\, the Willow Run Bomber Plant\, and local WWII aviators from Ann Arbor.

DESCRIPTION:The dry climate of the Egyptian desert offers an ideal environment for the preservation of ancient artifacts. As the sands of Egypt has preserved also numerous Coptic manuscripts\, the transmission of the literary heritage of Egyptian Christians can be documented quite well from its beginnings in the 4th century CE until its decline in the 12th-13th centuries CE\, when it was completely superseded by Arabic. This exhibit aims to show some of the hallmarks of Coptic literature using manuscripts kept in the Special Collections Research Center of the University of Michigan Library. Topics explored include the main Coptic dialects\; bilingualism in Egypt\; books read by the Egyptian monks\; and the works of Shenoute the Great\, the most important author of Coptic literature.\n\nThis exhibit is curated by Dr. Frank Feder and Dr. Alin Suciu from the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities. The exhibit and related programming are offered with support from the Department of Middle East Studies and the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology.\n\nJoin us for an opening lecture and reception at 4:30 p.m. on November 12 in the Hatcher Library Gallery.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Paved with Good Intentions
DESCRIPTION:In keeping with artist David Opdyke’s previous work\, this site-specific installation serves as a critique of U.S. culture and politics. In an era of fake news and daily hyperbole\, Opdyke literally changes the picture by hand painting on 528 vintage postcards of well-known American landmarks and destinations. The postcards are assembled into a large mural--a vast gridded landscape beset by environmental chaos. Each card is placed to fit into the overall image\, and carefully modified with the gouache to show a realistically rendered piece of the overall turmoil.\n\nThe installation also features animated shorts and script-driven video\, which take place within the visual confines of one or more postcards. The animation is inspired\, in part\, by Terry Gilliam’s animation work on Monty Python’s \"Flying Circus\" and by the classical music sound effects in the Road Runner cartoons.\n\nAbout David Opdyke:\nDavid Opdyke is a draughtsman\, sculptor\, and animator known for his trenchant political send-ups of American culture. Born in Schenectady\, NY in 1969\, he graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a degree in painting and sculpture. His work is informed by the massive industrial and corporate restructuring he witnessed growing up\, namely the abandonment of the city center by manufacturing giants General Electric and ALCO. As GE shifted resources to neighboring Niskayuna\, the disparities became hard for Opdyke to ignore. Massive\, decaying factories\, an empty interstate loop\, and unemployment were downtown\; new streets\, expensive homes\, sushi and shopping malls were in the suburbs.\n\nFor 20 years Opdyke worked as a scenic painter and architectural model-maker. Ranging from intricate miniature constructions to room-sized installations\, his artwork explores globalization\, consumerism\, and civilization’s abusive relationship with the environment.\n\nThis project is supported by a grant from the Efroymson Family Fund.

DESCRIPTION:The Special Collections Research Center is excited to display a variety of nineteenth and twentieth century children's books made of cloth and related materials.\n\nThe market for children’s books expanded over the course of the nineteenth century\, as childhood mortality rates dropped and literacy rates rose. British and American publishers sought to create “indestructible” books that would appeal to the parents and teachers of very young children. Linen and muslin proved to be practical and appealing materials for such books\, which were usually printed with bright colors and comparatively little text.\n\nCloth books remained popular for almost a century before the cloth rationing of World War II shifted production towards heavy-duty paper substitutes\, such as “linenette.”

DESCRIPTION:Marisa Morán Jahn: The Mighty and the Mythic\nJanuary 24\, 2019 – March 2\, 2019\n\nStamps Gallery is proud to present The Mighty and the Mythic\, a solo exhibition of work by renowned social practice artist Marisa Morán Jahn. For the first time\, The Mighty and the Mythic brings together three key projects — CareForce (2012– ongoing)\, Bibliobandido (2010–ongoing)\, and MIRROR | MASK (2017–ongoing) — that highlight her deep and meaningful collaborations with low-wage immigrants\, caregivers\, and youth. Jahn describes her use of play and humor as essential tools that enable her and her collaborators to portray their lives with dignity\, critique power\, and build momentum within their community. Jahn’s practice is deeply informed by her own experiences growing up as a second-generation immigrant of Chinese and Ecuadorian heritage. For Jahn home was not a fixed place but an adaptation itself. Her varied vocational past as a schoolteacher\, caretaker\, woodshop cleaner-upper\, lumber hauler\, community organizer\, and now university professor and mother informs the urgency in her work to find common ground between (her-)self and (an-)other\, through the concepts of care and empathy. Each of the works in this exhibition highlights her deep engagement with the stories of everyday people\, mundane routines\, and a desire to build an inclusive society. DESCRIPTION:Can abstract art be about politics? In the early 1970s\, that question was hotly debated as artists\, critics\, and the public grappled with the relationship between art\, politics\, race\, and feminism. Many of those debates centered on bringing to light the roles that gender and race played in how “great modern art” was defined and assessed\, and on employing art to advance civil rights. Within this discourse\, abstraction had an especially fraught role. To many\, the decision by women artists and artists of color  to make abstract art seemed to represent a retreat from politics and protest: an abnegation of a commitment to civil rights and feminism. \"Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s\" presents large-scale work by four leading American artists—Helen Frankenthaler\, Sam Gilliam\, Al Loving\, and Louise Nevelson—who chose abstraction as a means of expression within the intense political climate of the early 1970s.\n\nLead support for \"Abstraction\, Color\, and Politics in the Early 1970s\" is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund\, the Herbert W. and Susan L. DESCRIPTION:Jazzy Ash grew up with a mother from New Orleans and a father from Trinidad\, and music infused her home life every day\, from jazz to Caribbean rhythms to the lively children’s music which was playing all the time for the kids in her mother’s home day care. She often spent summers in New Orleans with her aunts and grandparents\, enjoying the culture and music that permeated their West Bank neighborhood. Later on\, after becoming mom to two sons\, she earned a degree in early childhood development and embarked on her music education program\, Leaping Lizards Music\, and that evolved into a band\, Jazzy Ash and The Leaping Lizards. They've had the pleasure of performing at Lincoln Center and Symphony Space in New York\, Getty Center in California\, World Cafe Live in Philadelphia\, Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts\, and the Ann Arbor Summer Festival. DESCRIPTION:In 2018 we celebrated the 100th birthdays of both Leonard Bernstein and George Rochberg. While Bernstein’s presence and influence has been front and center\, that of Rochberg has perhaps been even more important (though less publicised.) He basically changed the whole nature of American composition in the late twentieth-century\; there is literally almost no music of the last 40 years that has not been touched by his compositions. In 1970 he announced with his Caprice Variations for Solo Violin his intention to change everything and with the Third String Quartet closely following succeeded in doing just that! Come hear the music that changed everything.

DESCRIPTION:“100 Years of Polish Independence: Zakopane 1918” is an exhibition of photographs from the archives of the Tatra Museum in Zakopane\, Poland. It tells the unique story of the short-lived Republic of Zakopane\, which was established in the concluding weeks of the First World War. The Copernicus Program in Polish Studies has curated the exhibit and organized public lectures in collaboration with the Tatra Museum\, the Adam Mickiewicz Institute in Warsaw\, and Culture.pl as part of POLSKA 100\, an international cultural program commemorating the centenary of Poland regaining Independence. It is financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage of the Republic of Poland as part of the multi-year program NIEPODLEGŁA 2017-22.

A native of Michigan\, Nahabetian received his BFA from Eastern Michigan University and MFA form Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. He currently lives and has his studio in Orchard Park\, New York\, near Buffalo. Nahabetian has work in many public and private collections and has exhibited at a variety of venues for over 25 years.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Image Vessels: Blown Glass
DESCRIPTION:Sculptor Herb Babcock creates both monumental and human-scale work using metal\, glass and stone. In the early years of the American Studio Glass Movement (1974-1984) Babcock’s sculptural and painterly expression utilized the vessel format. By layering color — both mass and line — between gathers of clear\, molten glass\, the full compositions are viewed through the vessel as three-dimensional. Babcock is Professor Emeritus\, College for Creative Studies. He was Section Chair of the Glass Department where he taught for 40 years. He lives in Ann Arbor and built a new studio near U-M north campus in 2016.

DESCRIPTION:Sharon Will’s commitment to painting is to capture the simple\, everyday beauty around her in her native Michigan and beyond. She is passionate about painting plein air (outdoors) whenever possible\, as she feels the direct observation from life is the best teacher to truly see the subtleties of light and color in nature. Working on sanded paper\, her process begins with a pastel and alcohol/mineral spirits under-painting wash to establish value and color. Soft pastel is applied in layers\, often in contrasting color and temperatures for vibrancy. Over her 35-year career in painting\, Will has won numerous national awards. She also operates a custom framing business from her home/studio in Washington Township and teaches occasional workshops.

DESCRIPTION:Most members of Paradigm art quilt group are professional artists based in southeast Michigan who create work\, teach and lecture. Although most of their artwork is textile based\, members use many different techniques. The theme of this exhibit is Inspired\, and the art quilts on display incorporate elements of assemblage\, collage and painting. The exhibit showcases the round robin approach that guided the creation of the work: the first artist made something which inspired the work of the second artist\, which inspired the work of the third artist\, and so on. A brief statement about the inspiration is included with each piece.

DESCRIPTION:Gregg Chadwick grew up with the rails of America in his blood. His grandfather Arthur Desch stoked coal in steam engines before becoming a train engineer on the Jersey Central Line. At family gatherings in Chadwick’s grandparent’s home\, his aunts and cousins played music to the rhythms of the trains outside. From Junior Parker\, Elvis Presley\, Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash\, to arts writers and directors Greil Marcus and Jim Jarmusch\, the enduring mythos of America and its legacy has been wrapped up in the blues notes of the song “Mystery Train”. Chadwick’s current series of paintings\, Mystery Train\, is steeped in the powerful echoes of those machine days.

DESCRIPTION:This exhibition features a selection of Elena Weissman’s hand-built ceramic teapots created over the last two decades. The teapots are playful interpretations of many everyday objects. In 2014\, in her Ann Arbor backyard studio\, Crowe began her current work with encaustics and image transfer processes. She creates her multi-media works by combining personal and vintage photography with wax on wood. In addition to exhibiting her work in Ann Arbor and Toledo\, Ohio\, Crowe also shows at the Water Street Gallery in Douglas\, Michigan. In 2018\, Crowe presented her work at the Ann Arbor Art Fair\, the Original.

Located at the historic Willow Run Airport\, just east of Ann Arbor\, where over 8\,600 B-24 Liberator Bomber aircraft were produced during World War II\, the Yankee Air Museum seeks to keep the history of the ‘Arsenal of Democracy’ alive. The Willow Run Bomber Plant is home to ‘Rosie the Riveter\,’ the iconic symbol of the thousands of women who poured into industrial factories to help the war effort during WWII. This exhibition features unique artifacts from the US home-front\, the Willow Run Bomber Plant\, and local WWII aviators from Ann Arbor.

DESCRIPTION:The mobility and displacement of the Black body\, from port to holding cell\, to ward and out\, is a history that is embedded in our communities socially\, culturally and geographically. Alluding to feelings of pain\, otherness\, power and triumph\, \"she was here\, once\" features work that illustrates a moment of remembrance and reflection on the women who have roamed these spaces before us.\n\nIn summer 2018\, artist Nastassja Swift organized a collaborative workshop and public performance in her home city of Richmond\, Virginia. Using a range of choreographed movement\, sound\, and solidarity\, eight Black women and girls\, wearing large needle felted wool masks\, traced the ancestral footprints of the arrival of the Black body in Richmond. The 3.5 mile walk began in Shockoe Bottom (the site of the importation of slaves into Richmond\, and one of the largest sources of slave trade in America) and concluded in the Jackson Ward neighborhood (one of the largest Black communities in Richmond).\n\nThe multi-layered piece has produced a short film\, mini documentary\, photography\, and performance masks\, on display in her solo exhibition\, \"she was here\, once\" in Lane Hall.\n\nLane Hall Gallery is open to the public weekdays from 8am - 4pm. DESCRIPTION:In keeping with artist David Opdyke’s previous work\, this site-specific installation serves as a critique of U.S. culture and politics. In an era of fake news and daily hyperbole\, Opdyke literally changes the picture by hand painting on 528 vintage postcards of well-known American landmarks and destinations. The postcards are assembled into a large mural--a vast gridded landscape beset by environmental chaos. Each card is placed to fit into the overall image\, and carefully modified with the gouache to show a realistically rendered piece of the overall turmoil.\n\nThe installation also features animated shorts and script-driven video\, which take place within the visual confines of one or more postcards. The animation is inspired\, in part\, by Terry Gilliam’s animation work on Monty Python’s \"Flying Circus\" and by the classical music sound effects in the Road Runner cartoons.\n\nAbout David Opdyke:\nDavid Opdyke is a draughtsman\, sculptor\, and animator known for his trenchant political send-ups of American culture. Born in Schenectady\, NY in 1969\, he graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a degree in painting and sculpture. His work is informed by the massive industrial and corporate restructuring he witnessed growing up\, namely the abandonment of the city center by manufacturing giants General Electric and ALCO. As GE shifted resources to neighboring Niskayuna\, the disparities became hard for Opdyke to ignore. Massive\, decaying factories\, an empty interstate loop\, and unemployment were downtown\; new streets\, expensive homes\, sushi and shopping malls were in the suburbs.\n\nFor 20 years Opdyke worked as a scenic painter and architectural model-maker. Ranging from intricate miniature constructions to room-sized installations\, his artwork explores globalization\, consumerism\, and civilization’s abusive relationship with the environment.\n\nThis project is supported by a grant from the Efroymson Family Fund.

DESCRIPTION:The Special Collections Research Center is excited to display a variety of nineteenth and twentieth century children's books made of cloth and related materials.\n\nThe market for children’s books expanded over the course of the nineteenth century\, as childhood mortality rates dropped and literacy rates rose. British and American publishers sought to create “indestructible” books that would appeal to the parents and teachers of very young children. Linen and muslin proved to be practical and appealing materials for such books\, which were usually printed with bright colors and comparatively little text.\n\nCloth books remained popular for almost a century before the cloth rationing of World War II shifted production towards heavy-duty paper substitutes\, such as “linenette.”

DESCRIPTION:ABSTRACT\nThe mainstream media have emerged as a prominent force in the sexual socialization of American youth\, with teens consuming nearly 7.5 hours of media a day. However\, media portrayals of women are often quite limited\, with heavy emphasis on their beauty\, sexiness\, and sexual appeal. How might regular exposure to this content shape how young women view themselves and their abilities? Most of the existing research testing this question has focused on traditional media\, mainly magazines\, and on consequences for young women’s mental health. In this talk\, I present findings from several studies that extend this work by testing contributions of traditional and social media\, and consequences for girls’ and young women’s sexual health\, experiences of intimate partner violence\, and academic cognitions.

DESCRIPTION:Sustainable and wind-resilient building design requires realistic modelling of urban microclimate interaction with building at various scales (component → building → neighbourhood → city). This includes both (i) normally recurring microclimate conditions driven by thermal variations and/or normal wind for building energy performance design\, and (ii) extreme climate conditions such as hurricane landfall\, tornado touchdown or extreme winter for capacity and safety design. Alan Davenport’s “wind-loading-chain” links the modelling of extreme synoptic wind\, exposure\, aerodynamics\, and dynamics to particular design criteria. Its expansion to (i) non-synoptic extreme winds such as tornadoes and downbursts\; (ii) normal micro-climatic loads such as thermal loads\, (iii) optimal tall building/bridge aerodynamic solutions\; (iv) performance based wind design methods for emerging tall-mass-timber buildings\; and (v) community level wind performance assessments\, will be presented\, through representative research projects from each category. The roles of computational fluid dynamics and Artificial Intelligence (deployed at SHARCNet) complimenting the physical experiments (enabled by the Boundary Layer Wind\nTunnel Laboratory and WindEEE Dome) in realizing windresilient and sustainable architectural engineering will be emphasized.\n\nDr. Bitsuamlak is Canada Research Chair in Wind Engineering at Western University. He serves as Director (Research) for both the Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel Laboratory and WindEEE Research Institute\, and Western’s Site-leader for SHARCNet computing centre. His team is actively working on modelling microclimate effects to enhance the performance of buildings and cities for extreme wind (e.g. hurricane and tornado safety)\, and normal climate (Building thermal and energy performance).

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Brazil Initiative Lecture. From Hope to Hate: The Rise of Conservative Subjectivity in Brazil
DESCRIPTION:Brazilians have recently elected a far-right president\, Jair Bolsonaro\, a former army captain. The talk introduces the general panorama of Brazilian macro and micro politics from ‘Lula-ism’ to ‘Bolsonaro-ism’\, marked respectively by the rise and fall of economic growth as well as by democratic collapse. These changes in national development have also shaped the individual self and the capacity to aspire to a better life\, as well as ways of doing politics and understanding the world. An examination of these processes can help us understand how the very citizens that exemplified Brazil's rise as a global democratic power came to support military intervention and Bolsonaro. \n    \nPinheiro-Machado will draw on her longitudinal ethnography (with Dr. Lucia Scalco) on consumption and politics among young people from Morro da Cruz\, the largest favela of Porto Alegre. In an effort to understand the conservative subjectivity that has emerged amongst low income groups (especially amongst male voters) the researchers have been following youth since 2009\, through the political polarization that took place in Brazil after 2013\, to the recent transformations that resulted in the election of Bolsonaro. \n----\n  \nRosana Pinheiro-Machado is a social scientist and an anthropologist at the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM\, Brazil). Previously\, she was a Lecturer at the Department of International Development at University of Oxford\, and held visiting positions at University of São Paulo and Harvard University. She is the author of the award winning book ‘Counterfeit Itineraries in the Global South (Routledge 2017) as well as numerous peer-review journal articles. With Dr Lucia Scalco\, Pinheiro-Machado has been carrying out ethnographic research on the ‘politics of the poor’ since 2009. They are currently completing a book manuscript entitled: From Hope to Hate: Poverty and Politics in Brazil’s Lula and Bolsonaro. Funded by the Australian Research Council\, she is part of a team examining the new consumer practices in the Global South (Mexico\, Brazil\, China\, and Philippines). Pinheiro-Machado also acts as a public intellectual and writes for The Intercept Brasil.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:HEP-Astro Seminar | Dark Energy: status and prospects after the 6th and final observing season of DES 
DESCRIPTION:The Dark Energy Survey (DES) is the state-of-the art imaging survey for dark energy. Since its first observing campaign\, in 2013\, DES has produced many exciting results\, including: the most precise cosmological measurements from weak gravitational lensing of 400M galaxies\, the first ever observation of the optical transient associated with a gravitational wave emitting astrophysical event (the binary neutron star merger GW1708117)\, and the first ever measurement of the rate of expansion of the universe using a dark gravitational wave standard siren (the binary black hole merger GW170814). After six years of data taking\, on January 9 2019 DES completed its main survey observations. The collaboration now focuses on obtaining the most precise cosmological measurements\, and prepare for target of opportunity observations of upcoming gravitational wave events. In this talk\, I present an overview of the most exciting science produced by DES so far and discuss the prospects for the next few years before the start of the next-generation survey with the upcoming LSST instrument.\n

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Shiraito is excited to host a weekly Monday evening hackerspace from January 21 until April 22. On April 22 only\, hackers will meet at 2 pm. \n\nDr. Shiraito is available to assist with a variety of topics that include Bayesian statistics\, parallel computing in R\, OpenMP and Rcpp\, web scraping using Python\, working with high performance computing clusters (Flux\, Beta\, Hadoop\, Cavium)\, and other computational methods. He hopes that participants will actively help each other where able. His goal is to create a productive and inclusive community for hackers to share expertise\, assist each other in data-intensive projects\, and enjoy peer-programming opportunities. Dr. Shiraito looks forward to hacking with you.\n\nThe goal is to foster a diverse and inclusive hacking environment in which attendees can benefit from each other’s expertise. To participate\, hackers need to bring their own laptops and\, ideally\, have a chunk of code they are planning to work on unless they plan to assist and join others in their coding endeavors.

DESCRIPTION:Art in the Age of the Internet\, 1989 to Today\, on view at UMMA from December 15\, 2018 to April 7\, 2019\, examines the radical impact of internet culture on visual art since the invention of the web in 1989. The exhibition presents more than forty works across a variety of media—painting\, performance\, photography\, sculpture\, video\, and web-based projects. It features work by some of the most important artists working today\, including Judith Barry\, Juliana Huxtable\, Pierre Huyghe\, Josh Kline\, Laura Owens\, Trevor Paglen\, Seth Price\, Cindy Sherman\, Frances Stark\, and Martine Syms.\n \nOpen galleries from 4-5 p.m. will be hosted by UMMA staff. At 5 p.m. participants will convene for an open discussion about the exhibit. The conversation will begin with a dialogue between the artist Osman Khan (U-M School of Art and Design) and the cultural critic Anna Watkins Fisher (U-M American Culture) facilitated by Jennifer Robertson (Art History and Anthropology). DESCRIPTION:Scholar\, poet and playwright Dr. Carolyn Dunn will lecture on the aesthetics of Native and Indigenous Theater. Dunn was born in Southern California and is of Cherokee\, Muscogee Creek\, Seminole\, Cajun\, French Creole\, and Tunica-Biloxi descent. She earned a BA from Humboldt State University\, an MA from UCLA\, and a PhD from the University of Southern California. Her collections of poetry include Outfoxing Coyote (2001) and Echolocation: Poems and Stories from Indian Country L.A. (2013). She has edited the anthologies Through the Eye of the Deer (1999) and\, with Paula Gunn Allen\, Hozho: Walking in Beauty: Native American Stories of Inspiration\, Humor\, and Life (2001). Dunn is the coauthor\, with Ari Berk\, of the nonfiction book Coyote Speaks: Wonders of the Native American World (2008). Her play The Frybread Queen was produced by the Montana Repertory Theater in Missoula\, Montana\, and Native Voices at the Autry in Los Angeles. \n \nDunn’s scholarly work focuses on American Indian women’s literature and American Indian identity. She has taught at Humboldt State University\, Four Winds Indian School\, and California Polytechnic State University. A founding director of the American Indian Theatre Collective\, she is also a member of the female Native American drum group the Mankillers. She is director of the American Indian Resource Center at UC Santa Cruz.\n\nAll events are free and open to the public. Free to attend and open to all!\n\nA Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets\, Linda Gregerson is the Caroline Walker Bynum Distinguished University Professor of English Language and Literature at the University of Michigan\, where she teaches creative writing and Renaissance literature. She is the author of six books of poetry and two books of criticism\, and the co-editor of one collection of scholarly essays. Gregerson's poems have appeared in The New Yorker\, The Atlantic Monthly\, Poetry\, Granta\, The Paris Review\, The Kenyon Review\, The Best American Poetry\, and many other journals and anthologies. Among her honors and awards are an American Academy of Arts and Letters Award in Literature\, the Kingsley Tufts Award\, four Pushcart Prizes\, grants and fellowships from the Guggenheim\, Rockefeller\, Mellon\, and Bogliasco Foundations\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, the Institute for Advanced Study\, the Poetry Society of America\, and the National Humanities Center. In 2014\, Gregerson was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

DESCRIPTION:Lecture abstract\nPlants vary substantially in their quality as food for herbivores. The availability of proteins\, fats\, and carbohydrates differ markedly from one plant species to the next. Moreover\, plants contain a dazzling array of “secondary metabolites” that are often toxic to consumers. However\, in low doses\, plant toxins can also serve as medicines\, protecting herbivores from agents of disease. Like humans\, many other animals exploit the natural pharmaceuticals in plants to mitigate the effects of parasite infection. This lecture will explore the ecology and evolution of medication behaviors in animals. As herbivores forage for food\, they must manage the competing demands of gaining adequate nutrition\, avoiding their predators\, and choosing appropriate medicines from the Great Green Pharmacy. Medication behaviors can be therapeutic\, in which medicines are consumed only after infection\, or prophylactic\, in which medicines are consumed prior to infection. Medication behaviors can also serve to protect the individual actor (self-medication) or their relatives (kin or social medication). Examples will show how different ecological conditions favor the evolution of different medication behaviors. Concentrations of toxins in plants also vary substantially based on environmental conditions\, including soil quality\, air quality\, and biotic interactions. Therefore\, the forces of global environmental change threaten the pharmaceutical use of plants by animals. Conservation of the Great Green Pharmacy is vitally important to the biological diversity of life on Earth.\n\nAbout the professor\nMark Hunter is the Earl E. Werner Distinguished University Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Michigan. He received his bachelor’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Oxford in England.  After serving as a NATO International Fellow and an NSERC International Fellow\, he joined the faculty of the University of Georgia\, where he served as Professor in the Institute of Ecology and as founding Director of the Center for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Processes. He joined the University of Michigan in January 2006. His research interests include plant-animal interactions\, ecosystem ecology\, biodiversity\, and population dynamics. Professor Hunter has published over 150 research articles and written or edited six books. He is the recipient of both a CAREER Award and an OPUS award from the National Science Foundation\, and in 2014 was elected a Fellow of the Ecological Society of America.

The Accolades Awards were developed by Arts at Michigan to foster the artistic growth of the student body at the University of Michigan by recognizing the accomplishments of the many extraordinary student arts groups on campus.\n\nAwards are designed to recognize achievements by student organizations in a wide range of categories\, including Theatre\, Music\, Dance\, Comedy and Improv\, Visual Arts\, Literary publications and more. Nominations are open from February 18- March 30\, and the entire campus will be encouraged to vote for the most deserving groups in each category online. Then\, on Tuesday\, April 23rd\, the last day of classes\, we will announce the winners for this year's Accolades awards through a series of announcements on social media. DESCRIPTION:“100 Years of Polish Independence: Zakopane 1918” is an exhibition of photographs from the archives of the Tatra Museum in Zakopane\, Poland. It tells the unique story of the short-lived Republic of Zakopane\, which was established in the concluding weeks of the First World War. The Copernicus Program in Polish Studies has curated the exhibit and organized public lectures in collaboration with the Tatra Museum\, the Adam Mickiewicz Institute in Warsaw\, and Culture.pl as part of POLSKA 100\, an international cultural program commemorating the centenary of Poland regaining Independence. It is financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage of the Republic of Poland as part of the multi-year program NIEPODLEGŁA 2017-22.

DESCRIPTION:Dennis Nahabetian’s metal sculptures captivate the viewer with their exquisite detail and refined beauty. Combining a masterful use of metal and textile techniques\, Nahabetian carefully constructs objects that simultaneously harness light while projecting complex linear shadows. A native of Michigan\, Nahabetian received his BFA from Eastern Michigan University and MFA form Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. He currently lives and has his studio in Orchard Park\, New York\, near Buffalo. Nahabetian has work in many public and private collections and has exhibited at a variety of venues for over 25 years.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Image Vessels: Blown Glass
DESCRIPTION:Sculptor Herb Babcock creates both monumental and human-scale work using metal\, glass and stone. In the early years of the American Studio Glass Movement (1974-1984) Babcock’s sculptural and painterly expression utilized the vessel format. By layering color — both mass and line — between gathers of clear\, molten glass\, the full compositions are viewed through the vessel as three-dimensional. Babcock is Professor Emeritus\, College for Creative Studies. He was Section Chair of the Glass Department where he taught for 40 years. He lives in Ann Arbor and built a new studio near U-M north campus in 2016.

DESCRIPTION:Sharon Will’s commitment to painting is to capture the simple\, everyday beauty around her in her native Michigan and beyond. She is passionate about painting plein air (outdoors) whenever possible\, as she feels the direct observation from life is the best teacher to truly see the subtleties of light and color in nature. Working on sanded paper\, her process begins with a pastel and alcohol/mineral spirits under-painting wash to establish value and color. Soft pastel is applied in layers\, often in contrasting color and temperatures for vibrancy. Over her 35-year career in painting\, Will has won numerous national awards. She also operates a custom framing business from her home/studio in Washington Township and teaches occasional workshops.

DESCRIPTION:Most members of Paradigm art quilt group are professional artists based in southeast Michigan who create work\, teach and lecture. Although most of their artwork is textile based\, members use many different techniques. The theme of this exhibit is Inspired\, and the art quilts on display incorporate elements of assemblage\, collage and painting. The exhibit showcases the round robin approach that guided the creation of the work: the first artist made something which inspired the work of the second artist\, which inspired the work of the third artist\, and so on. A brief statement about the inspiration is included with each piece.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Mystery Train: Oil on Linen
DESCRIPTION:Gregg Chadwick grew up with the rails of America in his blood. His grandfather Arthur Desch stoked coal in steam engines before becoming a train engineer on the Jersey Central Line. At family gatherings in Chadwick’s grandparent’s home\, his aunts and cousins played music to the rhythms of the trains outside. From Junior Parker\, Elvis Presley\, Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash\, to arts writers and directors Greil Marcus and Jim Jarmusch\, the enduring mythos of America and its legacy has been wrapped up in the blues notes of the song “Mystery Train”. Chadwick’s current series of paintings\, Mystery Train\, is steeped in the powerful echoes of those machine days.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Steeped in Whimsy: Ceramic Teapots
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition features a selection of Elena Weissman’s hand-built ceramic teapots created over the last two decades. The teapots are playful interpretations of many everyday objects. In addition to ceramics and photography\, Weismann works in paper arts\, book making\, fused glass\, beads\, mosaics\, metalwork and painting. Her photography can be seen in several professional buildings in the Detroit metropolitan area\, as well as in many personal collections. In addition to participating in art exhibits and juried art shows\, she has also created commissioned works in glass mosaics as well as a number of large custom ceramic tile art installations.

DESCRIPTION:Ruth Crowe graduated from Texas Woman’s University in Denton\, Texas with a degree in Art Education. She served in the US Army and was a Los Angeles Police Dept. officer and collegiate softball coach. In 2014\, in her Ann Arbor backyard studio\, Crowe began her current work with encaustics and image transfer processes. She creates her multi-media works by combining personal and vintage photography with wax on wood. In addition to exhibiting her work in Ann Arbor and Toledo\, Ohio\, Crowe also shows at the Water Street Gallery in Douglas\, Michigan. In 2018\, Crowe presented her work at the Ann Arbor Art Fair\, the Original.

DESCRIPTION:The Yankee Air Museum dedicates itself to educating individuals about the history of US military aviation. Located at the historic Willow Run Airport\, just east of Ann Arbor\, where over 8\,600 B-24 Liberator Bomber aircraft were produced during World War II\, the Yankee Air Museum seeks to keep the history of the ‘Arsenal of Democracy’ alive. The Willow Run Bomber Plant is home to ‘Rosie the Riveter\,’ the iconic symbol of the thousands of women who poured into industrial factories to help the war effort during WWII. This exhibition features unique artifacts from the US home-front\, the Willow Run Bomber Plant\, and local WWII aviators from Ann Arbor.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:she was here\, once
DESCRIPTION:The mobility and displacement of the Black body\, from port to holding cell\, to ward and out\, is a history that is embedded in our communities socially\, culturally and geographically. Alluding to feelings of pain\, otherness\, power and triumph\, \"she was here\, once\" features work that illustrates a moment of remembrance and reflection on the women who have roamed these spaces before us.\n\nIn summer 2018\, artist Nastassja Swift organized a collaborative workshop and public performance in her home city of Richmond\, Virginia. Using a range of choreographed movement\, sound\, and solidarity\, eight Black women and girls\, wearing large needle felted wool masks\, traced the ancestral footprints of the arrival of the Black body in Richmond. The 3.5 mile walk began in Shockoe Bottom (the site of the importation of slaves into Richmond\, and one of the largest sources of slave trade in America) and concluded in the Jackson Ward neighborhood (one of the largest Black communities in Richmond).\n\nThe multi-layered piece has produced a short film\, mini documentary\, photography\, and performance masks\, on display in her solo exhibition\, \"she was here\, once\" in Lane Hall.\n\nLane Hall Gallery is open to the public weekdays from 8am - 4pm. Class visits are encouraged.\n\nAccessibility: Ramp and elevator access at the E. Washington Street entrance (by the loading dock). There are accessible restrooms on the south end of Lane Hall\, on each floor of the building.
