The glass masters were trained in schools of art and design and many achieved international fame during their lifetimes. \n\nThe collectors\, Endi Poskovic and his wife Julie Anne Visco\, began acquiring the glass in 2015-16 while Endi was a Fulbright Scholar and Visiting Professor at the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. Scouring flea markets\, antique shops\, and websites\, they continue to acquire pieces and build the collection to this day. Candid and relaxed more than posed\, they are similar to most people's pictures in old family albums.\n\nCulled from the Orson Welles-Beatrice Welles materials that are part of the Mavericks & Makers collection within the U-M Library’s Special Collections Research Center\, each photo or letter tells a story of a connection Welles held dearly. The materials included are from two periods: the late 1920s and early 1930s\, when Welles was a teenager\, and the mid-1950s to early 1960s\, during the early years of his marriage to his third wife\, Paola Mori. \n\nIt should be noted that Welles’s personal life was messy at best. Other collections housed at U-M that include personal materials related to Welles document his first and second marriages\, including the Welles-Feder Collection and the Wilson-Welles Collection. This new paradigm\, known as the Angular Linear Inverted Pendulum ALIP model\, has shown effectiveness in cases where a robot's center of mass height can be assumed to be constant or near constant as well as in cases where there are no non-kinematic restrictions on foot placement. Walking up and down stairs violates both of these assumptions\, where center of mass height varies significantly within a step and the geometry of the stairs restrict the effectiveness of foot placement.\n\nIn this thesis\, we explore a variation of the ALIP model that allows the length of the virtual pendulum formed by the robot's stance foot and center of mass to follow smooth trajectories during a step. We couple this model with a control strategy constructed from a novel combination of virtual constraint-based control and a model predictive control algorithm to stabilize a stair-climbing gait that does not solely rely on foot placement. Simulations on a 20-degree of freedom model of the Cassie biped in the SimMechanics simulation environment show that the controller is able to achieve periodic gait. Hardware experiments also show promise of improving the robustness of walking gaits on inclined surfaces. Now Luca Cavalli-Sforza and I measured the average rate of spread of early farming over Europe and published it in 1971. We then put forward the wave of advance model (after R. A. Fisher) and the hypothesis of demic diffusion to explain the long and slow expansion of agro-pastoralism from Anatolia to Scandinavia. Between 1972 and 1977\, we both taught in the new Program in Human Biology at Stanford University and initiated a wide range of studies leading to our book The Neolithic Transition in Europe (1984). The widening Harvest then appeared in 2004. In 2005\, we measured the rate of spread again and came up with the same result. But\, on the genetic side\, the research was extremely expensive and moved at a slow pace until the just right bone (rich in DNA) was found in 2013. Check our events page for more Thursday seminars! \n\nAbout: All organisms are subject to spontaneous mutation\, but we are just beginning to explore how DNA replication and repair processes evolve to determine the mutation rate and spectrum. My lab uses multiple yeast species and cell types to understand how the mutation process is influenced by sequence contexts within genomes\, such as repetitive DNA\, and by population genetic forces like natural selection and genetic drift. We studied many experimental strains of the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae to examine how ribosomal DNA\, which is highly repetitive but critical for cellular function\, maintains its structure despite significant mutational pressures. Our data supports a model of rDNA maintenance where persistent copy loss is counteracted by directed-mutation mechanisms\, which themselves represent a large mutational target. We find that a model of mutation-selection balance is adequate to explain levels of standing variation in rDNA copy number in the wild. We have also been comparing species and cell types to test hypotheses for the evolution of genome-wide mutation rates. In S. cerevisiae\, which generally lives as a diploid\, we previously found that haploid cells exhibited an elevated mutation rate and altered mutational spectrum. We now have complementary evidence from the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe\, which generally lives as a haploid. For this species\, we find that the mutation rate is elevated in diploid cells. In this lecture we will address the critical challenges that our team has faced on the way to practical application of such catalysts.\n\nOver the last decade or so (while at the University of New Mexico)\, our team has developed the Sacrificial Support Method (SSM) as a main approach for templated synthesis of hierarchically structured electrocatalysts materials. In this method the catalysts precursors are being absorbed on\, impregnated within or mechanically mixed with the support (usually mono-dispersed or meso-structured structured silica)\, thermally processed (pyrolyzed) and then the silica support is removed by etching to live the open frame structure of a “self-supported” material that consists of the catalysts only. \n\nThe makeup and structure of the active site/sites of the PGM-free ORR electro-catalysts\, including geometry (coordination) and chemistry (composition and oxidation state) remain contentious even after 50 years of research. There is an emerging agreement that iron and nitrogen functionalities\, displayed on the surface if the carbonaceous substrate/support\, govern ORR activity. This is often combined with a broadly accepted hypothesis that micro-porous surface area plays a critical role forming the active site. Candidate structures participating in ORR include multitudes of nitrogen defect motifs in the carbon matrix of different degrees of graphitization\, with metal incorporated as metal nano-particles\, corresponding (native) oxides and/or as atomically dispersed\, oxidized metal species\, linked (coordinated) to nitrogen defects in carbonaceous matrix in a variety of possible configurations. This presentation will attempt to address rational design and performance metrics of M-N-C electrocatalyst based on a broad experimental set of data. Scientific and engineering technology challenges will be discussed in the context of maturtion of Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cells (PEMFC) and their market penetration. \n\nThis lecture will review the applications of this new class of electrocatalyst across several fuel cell applications: from automotive to microbial and from regenerative electrolyzer/ fuel cell units to water purification and de-salination devices. He is currently working on a series of abstract paintings dealing with the unnamable. Riley’s work is as much about painting as it is about various subjects located outside of painting. All his work is involved in a subtle and sensitive relationship with the materials of painting and various aspects of perception and seeing. \n\nRiley will discuss past works that contained both subjects of recognition and nameability\, and current work that is focused on abstractions that attempt to evade being named. Riley will be in conversation with Detroit native Mario Moore\, whose paintings focus on the personal\, social and political implications of our segregated society. Presenting stories of his own life and those of friends and family\, Moore weaves in multiple references to history\, art\, politics and literature to complete his narrative.\n\nRiley received his BA in Visual Studies from Dartmouth College and an MFA in painting from Yale University School of Art. He is the recipient of a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship\, a Rome Prize in Visual Arts\, and an American Academy of Arts and Letters Purchase Prize in painting. He has exhibited work both nationally and internationally. Modernist Glass from the Polish Past DESCRIPTION:The glass in this rare collection represents the work of renowned Polish glass artists and designers created between 1960 and 1980. Known as Polskie szkło artystyczne (Polish art glass)\, the works were produced in glass factories in southern Poland and are a feature of many homes throughout Central Europe. The glass masters were trained in schools of art and design and many achieved international fame during their lifetimes. \n\nThe collectors\, Endi Poskovic and his wife Julie Anne Visco\, began acquiring the glass in 2015-16 while Endi was a Fulbright Scholar and Visiting Professor at the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. Scouring flea markets\, antique shops\, and websites\, they continue to acquire pieces and build the collection to this day. Candid and relaxed more than posed\, they are similar to most people's pictures in old family albums.\n\nCulled from the Orson Welles-Beatrice Welles materials that are part of the Mavericks & Makers collection within the U-M Library’s Special Collections Research Center\, each photo or letter tells a story of a connection Welles held dearly. The materials included are from two periods: the late 1920s and early 1930s\, when Welles was a teenager\, and the mid-1950s to early 1960s\, during the early years of his marriage to his third wife\, Paola Mori. \n\nIt should be noted that Welles’s personal life was messy at best. Other collections housed at U-M that include personal materials related to Welles document his first and second marriages\, including the Welles-Feder Collection and the Wilson-Welles Collection. In this talk\, I will discuss UQ in two challenging scenarios motivated by scientific and societal applications: selective inference for large-scale graph learning and UQ for model-agnostic machine learning interpretations. Specifically\, the first part concerns graphical model inference when only irregular\, patchwise observations are available\, a common setting in neuroscience\, healthcare\, genomics\, and econometrics. To filter out low-confidence edges due to the irregular measurements\, I will present a novel inference method that quantifies the uneven edgewise uncertainty levels over the graph as well as an FDR control procedure\; this is achieved by carefully disentangling the dependencies across the graph and consequently yields more reliable graph selection. In the second part\, I will discuss the computational and statistical challenges associated with UQ for feature importance of any machine learning model. I will take inspiration from recent advances in conformal inference and utilize an ensemble framework to address these challenges. This leads to an almost computationally free\, assumption-light\, and statistically powerful inference approach for occlusion-based feature importance. For both parts of the talk\, I will highlight the potential applications of my research in science and society as well as how it contributes to more reliable and trustworthy data science. Since Charlottesville in August 2017\, however\, the urgency of these collaborations has seemed to markedly increase. Beyond signature initiatives like the 1619 Project\, journalists and historians are collaborating in ever more fruitful ways\, whether by working in tandem on investigative reporting\, sharing op-ed pages\, or appearing together on podcasts and other digital media. These projects demonstrate that journalists and historians can work together to produce public knowledge about the past—and hint at new possibilities for new partnerships. In this symposium\, journalists Kat Stafford (Reuters) and Anna Clark (ProPublica) will join historian Stephen A. Berry (University of Michigan) to discuss how journalists investigate the past and what future collaborations might entail.\n\nAnna Clark is an investigative journalist for ProPublica. She is the author of The Poisoned City: Flint’s Water and the American Urban Tragedy\, which won the Hillman Prize for Book Journalism and the Rachel Carson Environment Book Award\, and was longlisted for the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Nonfiction. She also edited A Detroit Anthology and wrote a slim book on the literary history of the Great Lakes State. Anna teaches nonfiction in Alma College’s MFA program in creative writing. She was a Fulbright fellow in Kenya and a Knight-Wallace journalism fellow at the University of Michigan. She graduated from U-M with degrees in history of art and creative writing/literature\, and also from Warren Wilson College's MFA program in creative writing. Formed out of Cape Dutch\, it was creolised first through a mixture of (Low and High) Portuguese\, Indonesian (such as Malay\, Singhalese)\, and Khoi phono-/lexical-/syntactic-variations\, and later heavily influenced by Arabic\, standard Afrikaans and English. Since colonialism\, the speakers of this ‘language’ has remained oppressed and only recently have we seen an accelerated effort to develop the necessary linguistic infrastructure (grammars\, digital text collections\, educational materials\, etc.) to liberate and secure the future of Kaaps. \n\nIn this talk\, I will discuss the story of the liberation of Kaaps in post-apartheid South Africa. I begin by providing important historical insight into the 17th century life of the first slaves who wrote in Kaaps\, what I term Early Kaaps\, pointing to the creole life and roots of Kaaps at the formation of Cape Dutch from 1652 to 1790. I point to diachronic studies of Kaaps to represent the enslaved voices of early Kaaps speakers. I then move on to the 1800s to demonstrate how with the lead up to the establishment of the Union of South Africa (in 1910) and into apartheid (1945-1989)\, Kaaps is developed in writing as a “tussen taal” (in-between language) and later a ‘language of resistance’. I point out that for much of the 1960s to 1980s\, Kaaps writers came to resist apartheid govermentality and racism by expressing liberation through forms of Kaaps protest writing (amongst other forms of protest and activism). \n\nIn the final part of this talk\, I ask: would the liberation of Kaaps in post-apartheid be achieved through the development of linguistic and educational tools – such as a grammar\, dictionary and bilingual learning materials – and thereby raise the functions of Kaaps in institutional contexts? I answer this question by discussing how recent projects focused on (1) developing a trilingual dictionary of Kaaps\, (2) Kaaps bilingual learning materials\, and (3) considerations for a descriptive grammar\, orthography and standardization of Kaaps are helpful in advancing the empowerment of Kaaps speakers. \n\nI conclude the talk by reflecting on the pitfalls of liberation work for Kaaps and its speakers. I also provide a number of conclusions on whether\, and if it all\, the development of a full Kaaps grammar\, dictionary\, orthography and educational materials are able to successfully challenge the binaries inherent in the remains of ‘colonial and apartheid linguistics’\, including those linguistic fixities\, hegemonies and hierarchies of standardized languages that prevent greater access to linguistic resources and infrastructures for Kaaps speakers. Unlike previous U-M Library exhibits that focused on the artist at work\, this display shows him in informal and familial environments\, revealing a depth and complexity of character that are often overshadowed by his fame and professional achievements. The photographs and documents displayed showcase a variety of emotional tones — warmth\, humor\, tenderness\, and passion. Candid and relaxed more than posed\, they are similar to most people's pictures in old family albums.\n\nCulled from the Orson Welles-Beatrice Welles materials that are part of the Mavericks & Makers collection within the U-M Library’s Special Collections Research Center\, each photo or letter tells a story of a connection Welles held dearly. The materials included are from two periods: the late 1920s and early 1930s\, when Welles was a teenager\, and the mid-1950s to early 1960s\, during the early years of his marriage to his third wife\, Paola Mori. \n\nIt should be noted that Welles’s personal life was messy at best. Other collections housed at U-M that include personal materials related to Welles document his first and second marriages\, including the Welles-Feder Collection and the Wilson-Welles Collection. Unlike previous U-M Library exhibits that focused on the artist at work\, this display shows him in informal and familial environments\, revealing a depth and complexity of character that are often overshadowed by his fame and professional achievements. The photographs and documents displayed showcase a variety of emotional tones — warmth\, humor\, tenderness\, and passion. Candid and relaxed more than posed\, they are similar to most people's pictures in old family albums.\n\nCulled from the Orson Welles-Beatrice Welles materials that are part of the Mavericks & Makers collection within the U-M Library’s Special Collections Research Center\, each photo or letter tells a story of a connection Welles held dearly. The materials included are from two periods: the late 1920s and early 1930s\, when Welles was a teenager\, and the mid-1950s to early 1960s\, during the early years of his marriage to his third wife\, Paola Mori. \n\nIt should be noted that Welles’s personal life was messy at best. Other collections housed at U-M that include personal materials related to Welles document his first and second marriages\, including the Welles-Feder Collection and the Wilson-Welles Collection.
