In order to safely perform useful work\, it is crucial for these robotic systems to be equipped with algorithms that enable spatial awareness\, decision making\, and localization. Alternate sensing modalities such as sonar address some of these challenges but introduce new trade-offs: acoustic noise\, view-dependent imaging\, and lack of large datasets for machine learning methods.\n \nThis dissertation addresses challenges associated with autonomous survey\, reacquisition\, and inspection missions for underwater robots. Autonomous survey encompasses the deployment of robots to capture imagery of a large search area. Reacquisition refers to the maneuvers to capture varying views of any found objects. Finally\, close-up inspection of objects involves capturing optical and acoustic imagery of objects for downstream tasks. These tasks are crucial to search and rescue\, oceanography\, defense\, and infrastructure inspection applications. Traditionally\, search for submerged objects of interest has been carried out with ship-mounted sonar and human divers. However\, this manual process is time consuming\, dangerous\, and does not scale to large search areas. The use of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) promises to speed up the process of underwater survey and inspection. However\, the data these vehicles collect often requires manual analysis by humans\, which can take weeks and does not enable in-situ autonomous decision making. Although machine learning methods can speed up decision making and data processing\, there are several challenges for deploying machine learning methods in the field. After an item has been found\, marine robotic systems can be deployed for a close-up inspection to enable detailed surveys of targets of interest.\n \nThis work contributes several novel methods that aim to enable autonomous search and survey for marine robotic systems. The first contribution of this work is a method that addresses the lack of training datasets for learning-based object identification in sonar imagery collected from robotic search missions. Specifically\, this work presents a method for shipwreck segmentation that is trained entirely in simulation and performs zero-shot shipwreck segmentation with no additional fine-tuning on real data. The second contribution is a diverse\, open-source dataset and benchmark for shipwreck segmentation in sonar imagery. This contribution establishes an open-source benchmark and enables future research in machine learning for ocean exploration. After an object is found\, operators may perform lower-altitude\, specialized survey patterns for imaging the object of interest. The third contribution is an adaptive surveying algorithm that plans more efficient re-inspections of detected targets using side scan sonar. This algorithm is a novel active perception method for side scan sonar that both chooses the next best view to maximize classifier performance and aggregates and classifies multiple views from an adaptive survey. Finally\, we develop a novel Gaussian splatting framework for close-range inspections using imaging sonar that demonstrates realistic novel view synthesis and models acoustic streaking phenomena. This method can enable synthetic data generation of realistic imaging sonar data for training deep learning models and additionally enables denoising of captured sonar data\, allowing for increased interpretability. The methods presented throughout this thesis are evaluated on real-world datasets collected from field work experiments using marine robotics platforms. The monarch migratory syndrome is complex\, integrating behavior\, morphology\, and physiology in an environmentally sensitive manner. Underlying this syndrome is an expansive genetic suite encompassing over 500 genes\, as well as a significant capacity for seasonally-sensitive phenotypic plasticity. The evolutionary histories of this genetic suite and capacity for seasonal plasticity remain largely unknown beyond within-monarch assessments.\nMonarch migration is an emerging model for testing broader hypotheses about the evolution of animal migration\, complex traits\, and the role of plasticity in adaptive evolution. A clearer understanding of how this spectacular phenomenon has emerged within just the past 20\,000 years is necessary to better contextualize evolutionary inferences drawn from this model. My dissertation research will focus on characterizing patterns of seasonal plasticity as well as migratory genetic and phenotypic variation within the butterfly genus Danaus. This work integrates comparative approaches in phylogenomics and developmental genetics to generate insights into how key features of the monarch migratory syndrome have evolved within the genus. Bayesian inference is often used to map the inevitable degeneracies\, and the large amount of physics and wide parameter space means these codes are typically not fast. Yet current and near-future surveys of the universe will yield spectra for millions of galaxies and imaging for billions. I will discuss the tactics employed to speed up these codes\, ranging from neural net emulators of key physics (photoionization modeling\; stellar spectra) to efficient gradient enhanced GPU-accelerated high-dimensional sampling to rapid simulation-based inference. These yield speed-ups of somewhere between 100x and 100\,000x\, with unavoidable trade-offs in flexibility and accuracy. I will discuss applications of these techniques to model modern astronomical data\, including both industrial-scale modeling of galaxy SEDs and newly-possible directions such as spatially resolved galaxy modeling. Finally\, time permitting\, I will discuss some of the exciting new discoveries made with these techniques in the very distant universe seen by JWST. There are individual attitudes (e.g.\, preference for burritos) that vary in strength (e.g.\, central to the self)\, resistance to change (e.g.\, unwavering in the face of dietary information)\, and their relationship with relevant behaviors (e.g.\, purchasing of burritos). This approach misses a key property of attitudes: Attitudes are interdependent. \n\nIn this talk\, Brandt focuses on recent research from my lab that studies how attitudes are dependent on other attitudes\, identities\, and values within a political belief system. He presents the findings that (1) central attitudes of a political belief systems are stronger\, being more stable overtime and more resistant to change and (2) that attitudes become moralized when they are connected with other moralized attitudes in the belief system. In combination\, these findings suggest that the interdependence of attitudes matters for attitude change and moralization. \n\nThe goal of Mark Brandt's research is to understand the causes and consequences of political\, religious\, and moral beliefs that can ultimately be leveraged to reduce conflict and promote a more fair\, just\, and free society. Embellished clothing (sorochky)\, ritual cloths (rushnyky)\, and household textiles accompany a person from birth until death\, punctuating important life events in between. A variety of embroidery patterns are used throughout Ukraine\; some stitches are universally known\, while others are region-specific. In them\, Ross explores humor and personal meaning through absurd juxtapositions of pairs of wildly varied images. Each single image is stripped of its original context (be it\, for example\, a history book\, an instruction manual\, or a magazine advertisement)\, placed on a white background like some kind of specimen\, and presented afresh with a new “companion image.” These companion images confront\, contrast and converse with each other\, and thereby build new relationships\, narratives\, jokes\, and contexts.\n\nAndy Ross grew up in Macomb County\, and has been making art in various mediums since the 1970s. He received a BFA degree from College for Creative Studies\, and an MFA degree from University of Michigan. He has taught photography\, art\, and web design at colleges in California and Michigan. She creates detailed graphite portraits on pink donut boxes to highlight the stories of Southeast Asians who have survived war trauma and genocide. Huynh’s serigraph prints about Donut Kids foreground intergenerational gaps as well as bridging the refugee parent and American child through the narratives of Cambodian American children who were raised by donut shop owners in California. Huynh’s most recent work of drawings of Cambodian Buddhist statue heads and photographic prints of decapitated statue bodies on fabric addresses the repatriation of looted Cambodian antiquities in the context of challenging the legacy of colonialism\, unethical museum practices\, and the refugee’s desire to return home. Unlike 3D counterparts\, layered magnets can be easily and rapidly exfoliated to yield ultra-thin magnets\, providing unique opportunities for both fundamental physics and new technologies. Furthermore\, these materials enable unprecedented experimental access to the ground states\, fundamental excitations\, and magnon dynamics\, as they are highly susceptible to external stimuli. In this talk\, I will present and discuss our recent findings in tuning the magnetic properties of quasi-2D layered van der Waals quantum magnets by intercalation\, photoexcitation\, proton irradiation\, and by the application of pressure. If time permits\, I will briefly discuss our recent efforts in solving the problems related to energy materials by employing magnetometry and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. He received his Ph.D. in Physics in 2008 from Indian Institute of Science\, Bangalore\, working under the supervision of Prof. S V Bhat. His doctoral work focused on the study of nanoscale charge ordered manganites. He then joined the group of Prof. Andre Stesmans at the University of Leuven (Belgium)\, focusing on the carbon nanotubes and graphene nanoribbons. He then secured NRC/NAS postdoc position at Army Research Office\, USA\, working on multiferroic materials.\n\nHe joined Faculty at UTEP in 2016. His primary research focuses on two interconnected research thrusts: (a) investigate the magnetic properties of quasi-2D magnetic properties of quantum materials\, (b) develop and apply operando (electron) spin techniques to solve the problems related to catalysis and energy materials. He received the funding from NSF DMR\, NSF MRI\, NSF CBET\, ACS PRF\, NRC\, and DOE LDRD. Under his mentorship\, his students secured NSF GRFP\, DOE SCGSR\, and Outstanding Dissertation Awards and placed at Stanford\, Caltech\, Rice\, UT Austin\, and LANL for Ph.D. and postdoc positions. He serves in MRS Awards Committee and Kavli Young Scientist Award Committee. He raised more than $6.37 M to initiate\, run\, and establish the research programs in his group at UTEP. He published 85 peer-reviewed articles (total) in the leading international journals. His work has been widely recognized in the community as reflected from more than 3000 citations\, 35 invited talks\, and h-index of 23. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. We introduce a model of quick-fixing. To study it empirically\, we field a novel survey that measures households’ consumption policy functions in response to income shocks. Almost 70% of households follow one of four simple quick-fixes that fully consume or fully save out of small shocks\, but they abruptly adjust their behavior for large shocks. This behavior accounts for almost half of the cross-sectional variance in marginal propensities to consume\, but is poorly predicted by other demographic and economic information. In an incomplete-markets model calibrated to match our evidence\, we find that quick-fixing is near-rational: the average opportunity cost of quick-fixing is only $17 per quarter. Yet\, this small\, empirically realistic deviation from the rational model significantly alters aggregate consumption responses to income shocks of varying sizes. This method also shows significant promise in addressing the global challenge of remediating per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in water. Viable electrocatalytic processes must use nonprecious materials\, operate in aqueous environments\, consume minimal energy\, and effectively eliminate harmful chemicals\, necessitating a deep understanding of mechanisms and the strategic design of nanocatalysts with controlled properties.\n\nOur research employs pulsed laser in liquids synthesis to develop nanocatalysts with precise surface chemistries\, facilitating a quantitative understanding of electrocatalytic processes\, especially within the electrode microenvironment. We have demonstrated that laser-made earth-abundant mixed-metal nanocatalysts on high-surface-area carbon supports can selectively electrooxidize toluene to benzyl alcohol with high activity. Additionally\, we achieved complete defluorination of various PFAS in aqueous electrolytes using laser-synthesized bimetallic nanocatalysts.\n\nThe unifying theme of our group is to advance the design and fabrication of nanocatalysts for the electrocatalytic generation of reactive species from water\, aimed at sustainable applications. This work is based on a detailed atomistic understanding of catalyst materials\, electrode microenvironments\, and electrocatalytic mechanisms\, with the ultimate goal of promoting environmentally friendly and scalable solutions for chemical manufacturing and water remediation. The largest bell\, which strikes the hour\, weighs 12 tons\, while the smallest bell\, 4½ octaves above\, weighs just 15 pounds.\n\nThirty-minute recitals are performed on the Charles Baird Carillon at noon every weekday that classes are in session\, followed by visitor Q&A with the carillonist. The bell chamber may be accessed via a combination of elevator and stairs. Take the elevator to the highest floor possible (floor 8)\, and then climb two flights of stairs (39 steps) to the bell chamber (floor 10). Hearing protection earmuffs are provided for visitors. Be prepared to walk on ice and snow in the bell chamber during winter. Built in 1936\, the Charles Baird Carillon is not ADA accessible. In them\, Ross explores humor and personal meaning through absurd juxtapositions of pairs of wildly varied images. Each single image is stripped of its original context (be it\, for example\, a history book\, an instruction manual\, or a magazine advertisement)\, placed on a white background like some kind of specimen\, and presented afresh with a new “companion image.” These companion images confront\, contrast and converse with each other\, and thereby build new relationships\, narratives\, jokes\, and contexts.\n\nAndy Ross grew up in Macomb County\, and has been making art in various mediums since the 1970s. She creates detailed graphite portraits on pink donut boxes to highlight the stories of Southeast Asians who have survived war trauma and genocide. Huynh’s serigraph prints about Donut Kids foreground intergenerational gaps as well as bridging the refugee parent and American child through the narratives of Cambodian American children who were raised by donut shop owners in California. Huynh’s most recent work of drawings of Cambodian Buddhist statue heads and photographic prints of decapitated statue bodies on fabric addresses the repatriation of looted Cambodian antiquities in the context of challenging the legacy of colonialism\, unethical museum practices\, and the refugee’s desire to return home. Over the last few years\, there has been a lot of interest in their natural higher analogues\, called k-Du Bois and k-rational singularities. These singularities have been extensively studied in the case of local complete intersection (lci) varieties but not much is known outside the lci case. In this thesis\, we prove some of the first results in this field beyond the lci setting\, with the main theorem being a higher analogue of a classical result of Kovács\, i.e. we prove that the class of varieties with k-Du Bois singularities contains the class of varieties with k-rational singularities\, which extends prior results of Mustaţă-Popa and Friedman-Laza in the lci setting.\n\nThe second part of the thesis concerns toric varieties\, which are a well studied class of algebraic varieties admitting alternate descriptions in terms of convex geometric objects in \mathbb{R}^n. We prove new local vanishing results on toric varieties and build on the techniques therein to give a precise formula relating the graded de Rham complex of the intersection cohomology Hodge module \IC^H_X to the stalks of the intersection cohomology perverse sheaf \IC_X\, when X is a toric variety. Hinojosa has created log cabin quilts to adorn the columns in front of Stamps Gallery. The log cabin quilts traditionally represent the warm hearth at the center of a home. This installation reflects on the interplay between home\, placemaking\, labor\, and intergenerational memories of migration. Rather than quilting cotton designed to softly embrace the body\, these quilts are sewn from outdoor grade\, UV-resistant polyester. The quilt is an ode to Hinojosa’s grandmother who illegally crossed the US/Mexico border holding her babies and her quilts. As she and her family drove across the United States to work in the fields of the Salinas Valley\, the quilts offered a safe space for her and her family. Hinojosa celebrates their resilience to her grandmother and elders while also drawing attention to precarity and violence experienced by refugees and migrants crossing the US-Mexico border in our present today.\nArtist’s bio:\nMichelle Inez Hinojosa is an artist\, educator\, and researcher whose work is informed by Indigenous and Latine/x/a/o studies. Born and raised in Texas\, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in both drawing and painting and art education with a minor in art history at the University of North Texas. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. She works with quilting\, bead weaving\, embroidery\, jewelry\, transparent film installations\, painting\, ceramics\, and sculpture to honor and explore the history of migration in her family and humanize the current discourse around migration still occurring at the southern border. Konstantin Gudauskas\, a Lithuanian Jew born in Kazakhstan\, is living in Bucha where he was granted asylum by Ukraine. After the Russian invasion begins on February 24th\, 2022\, Konstantin is able to travel freely to the occupied territories and evacuate civilians thanks to his Kazakhstani passport. Over the following months\, he saves more than 200 people by leading them to safety and freedom\, and he observes first-hand the horrors of war and atrocities of the Russian occupation. Among those rescued by Konstantin is the famous Ukrainian composer Igor Poklad. Throughout this time\, he is advised and guided by Gaide Rizaeva\, a Crimean Tatar and employee of the GUR (Main Intelligence Directorate)\, who was twice held captive by Russian separatists and was on death row before escaping.
