SUMMARY:Presentation:Museum Studies Program\, Museums at Noon
DESCRIPTION:A central issue animating and transforming the museum sector today is the call to decolonize. This appeal began with Indigenous activists\, whose communities have been overwhelmingly hurt by the museum sector’s history and status quo. Museums of mass violence – Holocaust museums\, paradigmatic among them – have been largely exempt from decolonial critiques. As products of 20th and 21st-century social justice mandates and often created at the behest of survivor communities\, they seem at first glance not to be obvious targets for such scrutiny. Yet\, Holocaust museums are not free from entanglements with state power nor from inherited traditions and infrastructures of museum practice with their attendant biases\, exclusions\, and silences. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Two extremes of liquid-liquid phase separation in membranes: minimal\, artificial membranes with only two lipids vs. living\, biological membranes with hundreds of components
DESCRIPTION:Amidst longstanding excitement about liquid–liquid phase separation in biological contexts\, fundamental questions have persisted about exactly which molecules are required for this transition in lipid membranes. The Keller Group applies those questions to both artificial and biological membranes. In simple membranes\, enormous progress has been made in understanding large-scale\, liquid-liquid phase separation in membranes with as few as three components: a sterol\, lipid with ordered chains\, and a lipid with disordered chains. How low can we go? Are three components really necessary? Our group set out to discover a truly minimal system with only two components. Inspired by reports that sterols interact closely with lipids with ordered chains\, we found that phase separation can robustly occur in bilayers in which a sterol and lipid are replaced by a single\, joined sterol–lipid. Next\, we turned our attention to natural membranes. Micron-scale liquid-liquid phase separation occurs in vacuole membranes of budding yeast (S. cerevisiae) at their growth temperature when the yeast switch from the log stage of growth to the stationary stage. The membrane phases are functionally important – they play a role in enabling the yeast to survive periods of stress. We found that yeast actively regulate this phase transition to hold the membrane transition of their membrane ~15C above the yeast growth temperature. They must do so by changing their lipidome. When yeast enter the stationary stage (and their membranes phase separate)\, the fraction of one lipid type (PC-lipids) doubles\, and lipids of that type have higher melting temperatures\, which is consistent with phase separation occurring in membranes containing a sterol\, lipids with ordered chains\, and lipids with disordered chains.

DESCRIPTION:Vinson Lam performs on the Charles Baird Carillon\, an instrument of 53 bronze bells located inside the Burton Memorial Tower. The largest bell\, which strikes the hour\, weighs 12 tons\, while the smallest bell\, 4½ octaves above\, weighs just 15 pounds.\n\nThirty-minute recitals are performed on the Charles Baird Carillon at noon every weekday that classes are in session\, followed by visitor Q&A with the carillonist. The bell chamber may be accessed via a combination of elevator and stairs. Take the elevator to the highest floor possible (floor 8)\, and then climb two flights of stairs (39 steps) to the bell chamber (floor 10). Hearing protection earmuffs are provided for visitors. Be prepared to walk on ice and snow in the bell chamber during winter. Built in 1936\, the Charles Baird Carillon is not ADA accessible. Visitors with mobility concerns are invited to visit the Lurie Carillon.

DESCRIPTION:Rarely is the path to goal accomplishment perfectly smooth. Making progress on everyday goals is often unsteady\, in that each unit of effort or time spent generates unequal results. In this research\, we examine how progress steadiness affects motivation. Although unsteady goal progress is common in both work and personal pursuits\, we suggest that goal pursuers find it discouraging. We hypothesize that even when goal progress is equal in amount and speed\, unsteady (vs. steady) progress decreases people’s sense of accomplishment and motivation to continue\, and increases quitting. Across a variety of goal domains\, findings from vignette experiments\, recall studies\, and real-time achievement tasks support these hypotheses. We also explore the mediating psychological variables and identify how manipulations targeting expectations about progress steadiness and encouraging a more abstract view of progress can reduce the negative effects of unsteady progress.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Irwin Pollack Lecture | Audiovisual Perception of Speech: Evidence of A Primitive Integrative Function
DESCRIPTION:How does a listener benefit from observing a talker visually? This classic problem of perception in practical work situations was introduced in a study by Sumby & Pollack in 1954. Their question remains vital. Their account calibrated a perceiver’s ability to take advantage at every degree of intelligibility of an opportunity to view the talker. Today’s accounts often treat a perceiver as a deaf viewer bound to a blind listener\, puzzling through the differing phonetic impressions which result from such different sensory opportunities. Other accounts suppose that the incommensurate dimensions of visual and auditory sensation are recoded into a hypothetically common amodal metric to permit phonetic analysis. Almost every account derives its evidence from small inventories of test items presented under minimal uncertainty\, and consider the role of phoneme incidence to guide perceptual analysis. I will discuss new evidence from our laboratory of intelligible audiovisual presentation of speech\, using auditory and visual components which are unintelligible presented individually. Perceivers reported their impressions of the utterances in open set transcription under minimally constrained conditions of uncertainty. Such phenomena are consistent with primitive intersensory combination on which perceptual analysis of audiovisual speech might truly depend.\n\nAbout the speaker: \nRobert E. Remez is Professor of Psychology at Barnard College\, Columbia University\, where he has taught since 1980. A native New Yorker\, Robert was a Predoctoral Research Trainee at Haskins Laboratories in New Haven\, and received the doctorate in 1978 from the University of Connecticut. He received the Bachelor of Arts degree in 1971 from Brandeis University. At Barnard\, he has held an Ann Whitney Olin Chair\, has been Chair of the Departments of Psychology and Sociology\, and is Chair of the Columbia University Seminar on Language & Cognition. He is co-editor of both the first and second edition of the Handbook of Speech Perception\, and was Associate Editor of the journals Perception & Psychophysics and the Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance. In service to the research community\, he was a member of the Committee of Visitors for the Social\, Behavioral and Economic Sciences of the National Science Foundation\, and was a sitting member of the Communication Sciences Study Section of the Division of Research Grants and the Language and Communication Study Section of the Center for Scientific Review of the National Institutes of Health. He has been elected a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America\, the Association for Psychological Science\, the American Psychological Association\, the American Association for the Advancement of Science\, and the Psychonomic Society. DESCRIPTION:Lam\, Lee\, and Shimozono introduced the double Stanley symmetric functions in their study of the equivariant geometry of the affine Grassmannian. They proved that the associated double Edelman– Greene coefficients\, the double Schur expansion of these functions\, are positive\, a result later refined by Anderson. They further asked for a combinatorial proof of this positivity. We provide the first such proof\, together with a combinatorial formula that manifests the finer positivity established by Anderson. Our formula is built from two combinatorial models: bumpless pipedreams and increasing chains in the Bruhat order. The proof relies on three key ingredients: a correspondence between these two models\, a natural subdivision of bumpless pipedreams\, and a symmetry property of increasing chains. This talk is based on joint work with Jack Chou.

DESCRIPTION:We study a framework for robust mechanism design with multiple agents that accommodates various degrees of robustness with respect to agents' beliefs\, and encompasses both the belief-free and Bayesian robustness criteria. For general \emph{belief restrictions}\, we characterize the set of incentive compatible direct transfer mechanisms in general environments with interdependent values. Based on a \emph{first-order approach}\, we obtain a design principle to attain incentive compatibility via `belief-based' terms. In environments that satisfy a property of \emph{generalized independence}\, our results imply a \emph{robust} version of \emph{revenue equivalence}. Extending the notion of correlated information\, we introduce a notion of \emph{comovement} between types and beliefs\, defined based on a moment condition. Under comovement\, we characterize the full set of `belief-based' terms. Based on this\, we show that from Bayesian settings the following result extends to this fairly mild restriction on beliefs: any allocation rule can be implemented\, even in environments without single-crossing or monotonicity. However\, full rent extraction need not follow. Information rents typically remain\, and they decrease monotonically as the robustness requirement is weakened.

DESCRIPTION:Engendering Respectful Communities (ERC) is a one session workshop that engages graduate students in meaningful dialogue about various forms of sexual misconduct they may encounter in both professional and social spaces\, and provides resources for intervention or support in such circumstances.The primary goal of the workshop is to address complexities experienced by graduate students as they engage in bystander intervention\, so that participants gain an increase in awareness of barriers to action and familiarity with strategic planning to overcome them. The workshop also introduces participants to on-campus resources and provides knowledge on how sexual misconduct can unfold in graduate-specific settings.The ERC workshop uses small-group circles intended to promote active reflection and space to build community. The procedure of circles is introduced at the beginning of the workshop in order to help participants get used to the process\, which they do through a circle for introductions and value-sharing for the workshop space. These circles depict various\, realistic scenarios related to sexual misconduct within the graduate community. The circle process allows circle members to process the monologues\, reflect on complexities with identity and power dynamics within them\, name potential barriers to intervention\, and think of various ways in which they might respond if faced with similar situations. The circles provide a way to foster collective building of ideas\, where participants learn from one another and all input is equally valued. Participants are encouraged to share but can always pass if desired\, creating an environment where participation is open but not forced. Due to the participatory nature of the workshop\, if you are to arrive more than 20 minutes late\, we will ask you to re-register for another workshop session.If you have any questions about or concerns with taking this workshop\, or are in need of an exemption\, please contact jhippe@umich.edu or fill out this form. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:AIM Seminar:  Mean-Field Dynamics of Transformers: From Modeling to Clustering and Critical Scaling
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:  Self-attention is a central component of modern transformer architectures and is one of the key mechanisms behind the success of Large Language Models. Understanding its mathematical structure is therefore essential for explaining how these models process information and learn useful representations. In this talk\, I will describe an interacting-particle perspective on self-attention\, which has been developed in recent work by several authors as a fruitful framework for analyzing transformer dynamics. Unlike the classical mean-field theory for deep neural networks\, where the particles are neurons and the mean-field limit is tied to overparameterization\, here the particles are tokens whose representations evolve through attention interactions. This mean-field perspective leads to a new viewpoint on transformer dynamics\, with consequences for both theory and practice. In particular\, I will explain how it helps illuminate clustering behavior in deep transformers and the critical temperature scaling laws that arise in many frontier models.\n\nContact:  Zhiyan Ding

In this talk\, I explore variation in obstetric complications\, interventions\, and modes of delivery through an evolutionary and biocultural lens\, drawing on my research in Mexico\, Peru\, and the United States. I examine how maternal biology\, experience\, and birth environments intersect to shape birth outcomes\, and how these processes influence breastfeeding\, infant growth\, and early health. This work highlights the value of integrating biological and social approaches to better understand reproduction\, development\, and health across human populations.”\n\nAmanda Veile is an Associate Professor of Biological Anthropology at Purdue University and Vice President of the Human Biology Association. Her research investigates human growth\, reproduction\, and behavior\, with an emphasis on maternal and child health in Latin America and the United States. DESCRIPTION:Life likely started in the Archean Ocean. What were the temperatures of these early oceans? Oxygen isotope compositions of different sediments have been used extensively to answer this question. The δ¹⁸O values of Archean sediments are strikingly lower than their younger equivalents\, but interpretations of these results are extremely varied. High ocean temperatures\, low δ¹⁸O values of the early oceans\, or simply massive diagenesis of the sediments over the billions of ensuing years have all been considered. There is no consensus between the different camps. Here we use a completely different approach\, using the triple oxygen isotope composition of mantle eclogites to define the δ¹⁸O value of the Archean ocean. Mantle eclogites are subducted and metamorphosed equivalents of oceanic crust. Unlike sediments\, which are subject to surficial alteration over billions of years\, subducted ocean crust becomes metamorphosed and then isolated – isotopically ‘frozen’ – for billions of years. We find that the range of triple oxygen isotope values of fresh altered oceanic crust and those of Archean eclogites are nearly identical. Given that the temperatures of hydrothermal alteration have not changed through time\, and the isotopic composition of the mantle has not changed through time\, then the similar triple isotope range of modern and Archean metamorphosed oceanic crust indicates an unchanging ocean isotope composition over the last 3 Ga. Eliminating the oxygen isotope composition of the Archean ocean as a variable allows for better estimates of Earth’s early surficial conditions.

This paper will explore the historical dimension to this movement\, and more particularly\, the ways in which the current government has attempted to erase memory of India’s most glorious empire – the Mughals – from the historical record. This paper will explore several dimensions to this effort\, including interventions in the school curricula\, the manipulation of the memory of Mughal architecture\, literary and linguistic tastes\, the erasure of Mughal space as reflected in new place names\, both implemented and proposed\, and through Bollywood depictions of figures associated with the Mughal empire.\n\n*Lecture followed by reception at Forum hall\, Palmer Commons 4th floor*\n \nA graduate of the universities of Virginia and Wisconsin\, Professor Eaton teaches South Asian history at the University of Arizona. Our time is spent\, earned\, lost\, frozen\, stretched\, and taken from us. This work investigates how and what we adapt in order to survive. In what ways is resilience beaten into our bodies? Drawing inspiration from the anecdotes and experiences from those far\, near and dear\, this piece unfolds as a nonlinear progression of universal underpinnings. \n\n*Eroding Landscapes*\, choreographed by Ame Vidrio in collaboration with dancers\, explores identity across past\, present\, and future states through four interconnected themes: ancestral connections\, bonds\, erosion\, and rebirth. Each theme examines both the transformation and stagnation of the self. These concepts are supported through both physical and symbolic materials. Raw elements such as dirt\, rope\, and wood intersect with manufactured objects like wire\, heels\, and contact microphones\, all on stage\, guiding the viewer toward layered interpretations of control\, decay\, lineage\, and self-determination.

There will also be a post-performance discussion.*\n\nGustav and Alma Mahler arrived in New York City in 1907. He had been invited to lead the Metropolitan Opera\; his glamorous wife accompanied him to the New World. His embattled American career places their legendary marriage in sharp relief. Nineteen years Gustav’s junior\, Alma was his constant companion and occasional soul-mate\, sometimes his muse\, always his caretaker\, a woman otherwise restless and unfulfilled. Her husband’s life was intensely interior\, sporadically alert to others’ needs and desires.\n\nHorowitz writes: “My play is based on my 2023 novel with the same name. Its central event is Alma’s affair with Walter Gropius and her wrenching decision to remain with Mahler. As *The Marriage* illuminates\, there are things to be learned about Gustav and Alma that cannot as readily be observed in Vienna or Budapest as in Manhattan. Mahler was a great personality and\, when circumstances permitted\, a great man. He arrived in America weakened and fatigued. His energy and idealism were aroused by the New World\, but fitfully – he remained a chronic outsider.”\n\nABOUT THE GUEST ARTIST\n\nJOSEPH HOROWITZ is an award-winning author\, concert producer\, film-maker\, and broadcaster. He is one of the most prominent and widely published writers on topics in American music. As an orchestral administrator and advisor\, he has been a pioneering force in the development of thematic programming and new concert formats. Horowitz’s most recent books include a novel\, *The Marriage: The Mahlers in New York*\, about which Clive Paget wrote in *Musical America*: “With his unparalleled knowledge of fin-de-siècle classical music in America\, Joseph Horowitz [has] brought us closer to Mahler and his wife Alma than any other author I have read. . . . At times\, your heart breaks for them both. . . . DESCRIPTION:\"Artist’s statement: For centuries\, hair has been critical to how human beings understand racial categories\, gender designations\, and class status. For Black women in particular\, hair has and continues to be tied to ethnic identity and a history of self-determination\, social justice\, and survival. Thus\, chemotherapy-induced hair loss is a devastating event for Black patients who are also more likely to be diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer subtypes necessitating chemotherapy\, carrying a 40% increased risk of dying from breast cancer.\n\nRedefining the ‘crown’: Approaching chemotherapy-induced alopecia among Black patients with breast cancer” started as a manuscript published in the scientific journal Cancer. But the work could not stop there. “Redefining the Crown” then metamorphosed into a photo essay project aimed at exploring the breast cancer journeys of six Black women and their experiences with hair loss due to chemotherapy. Though the project centers the experience of Black women\, we also acknowledge that breast cancer and chemotherapy-induced alopecia impact individuals of all genders. While the goal is to illuminate the unique stories of Black women who are affected uncommonly by this common disease\, the project is also a call to action regarding the disproportionate breast cancer-related mortality facing Black communities.\n\nIn this portraiture series\, photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks. This exhibition examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy and how their sense of cultural pride and personal identity have been redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThese survivors have redefined their own crowns. DESCRIPTION:View a diverse array of artifacts which were created to communicate with and call upon various unseen\, supernatural forces for aid and protection. While the objects on display are disparate at first glance\, ranging from lead tablets and amulets to papyrus and parchment leaves\, they all share a common thread: they have long been labeled as \"magical\" in traditional Western scholarship.\n\nHowever\, each of these artifacts is better understood on a broad spectrum of ancient ritual\, from subversive and transgressive acts to highly social and visible ones. The exhibit highlights the objects’ oft-overlooked material dimensions\, asking us to consider how qualities like color\, texture\, and weight shaped an object’s perceived efficacy and meaning. \n\nThis exhibit was a collaboration\, and displays items from several University of Michigan units: the library’s Special Collections Research Center and Papyrology Collection\, the Museum of Natural History\, and the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology. This site-specific senior dance project consists of a walk through Nichols Arboretum\, along which the audience encounters a variety of characters\, sights\, sounds and scenes. In the forest\, we find fragments of personalities\, whispers of old stories and a world of unanswered questions in the form of dance\, live music\, acting and puppetry. \n\nThe concert is around one hour long. DESCRIPTION:The Department of Dance presents a performance with choreography by senior Ladina Schaller on April 18 at 2:00 pm and 5:30 pm at Nichols Arboretum. This site-specific senior dance project consists of a walk through Nichols Arboretum\, along which the audience encounters a variety of characters\, sights\, sounds and scenes. In the forest\, we find fragments of personalities\, whispers of old stories and a world of unanswered questions in the form of dance\, live music\, acting and puppetry. \n\nThe concert is around one hour long. Audience members are required to walk along Arboretum paths for the duration of the performance and are encouraged to dress for the weather and wear good shoes. This event is family-friendly and appropriate for all ages.\n\nThe audience meeting point is in front of the Reader Center at 1610 Washington Heights. The house will open at 7:00pm.\n\n*A Slippery Subject*\, choreographed by Anna Bodescu in collaboration with dancers\, addresses how we continue to rebuild and rebuild and rebuild the landscape that we call reality. Our time is spent\, earned\, lost\, frozen\, stretched\, and taken from us. This work investigates how and what we adapt in order to survive. In what ways is resilience beaten into our bodies? Drawing inspiration from the anecdotes and experiences from those far\, near and dear\, this piece unfolds as a nonlinear progression of universal underpinnings. \n\n*Eroding Landscapes*\, choreographed by Ame Vidrio in collaboration with dancers\, explores identity across past\, present\, and future states through four interconnected themes: ancestral connections\, bonds\, erosion\, and rebirth. Each theme examines both the transformation and stagnation of the self. These concepts are supported through both physical and symbolic materials. Raw elements such as dirt\, rope\, and wood intersect with manufactured objects like wire\, heels\, and contact microphones\, all on stage\, guiding the viewer toward layered interpretations of control\, decay\, lineage\, and self-determination.

SUMMARY:Performance:The Complete Philip Glass Piano Etudes
DESCRIPTION:One of the most influential composers of our time\, Philip Glass has had an extraordinary and unprecedented impact on the musical and intellectual life of our age.\n\nGlass has written more than 30 operas\, 14 symphonies\, 13 concertos\, numerous soundtracks to films\, nine string quartets\, a growing body of work for solo piano and organ\, and collaborated with artists ranging from Twyla Tharp to Allen Ginsberg\, Leonard Cohen and David Bowie. He describes himself as a composer of “music with repetitive structures” and says that “If I’m to be remembered for anything\, it will probably be for the piano music\, because people can play it.”\n\nPhilip Glass conceived his collection of etudes as a set of 20 works for solo piano written to improve his own performance technique. His most personal body of work is a self-portrait of a life’s practice\, representing some of the most intimate and inventive music of Glass’s oeuvre. This distinctive concert offering of all 20 of Glass’s etudes features 10 pianists onstage\, each offering a unique musical tribute to this masterful composer.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:'Redefining the Crown' Art Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:\"Artist’s statement: For centuries\, hair has been critical to how human beings understand racial categories\, gender designations\, and class status. For Black women in particular\, hair has and continues to be tied to ethnic identity and a history of self-determination\, social justice\, and survival. Thus\, chemotherapy-induced hair loss is a devastating event for Black patients who are also more likely to be diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer subtypes necessitating chemotherapy\, carrying a 40% increased risk of dying from breast cancer.\n\nRedefining the ‘crown’: Approaching chemotherapy-induced alopecia among Black patients with breast cancer” started as a manuscript published in the scientific journal Cancer. But the work could not stop there. “Redefining the Crown” then metamorphosed into a photo essay project aimed at exploring the breast cancer journeys of six Black women and their experiences with hair loss due to chemotherapy. Though the project centers the experience of Black women\, we also acknowledge that breast cancer and chemotherapy-induced alopecia impact individuals of all genders. While the goal is to illuminate the unique stories of Black women who are affected uncommonly by this common disease\, the project is also a call to action regarding the disproportionate breast cancer-related mortality facing Black communities.\n\nIn this portraiture series\, photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks. This exhibition examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy and how their sense of cultural pride and personal identity have been redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThese survivors have redefined their own crowns. More profound than the new hairstyles they don after hair loss are the invisible crowns that they choose to wear each day: gratitude\, faith\, and resilience. What do their words mean to you? SUMMARY:Exhibition:Materia Magica: Materiality and Ritual in the Greco-Roman World
DESCRIPTION:View a diverse array of artifacts which were created to communicate with and call upon various unseen\, supernatural forces for aid and protection. While the objects on display are disparate at first glance\, ranging from lead tablets and amulets to papyrus and parchment leaves\, they all share a common thread: they have long been labeled as \"magical\" in traditional Western scholarship.\n\nHowever\, each of these artifacts is better understood on a broad spectrum of ancient ritual\, from subversive and transgressive acts to highly social and visible ones. The exhibit highlights the objects’ oft-overlooked material dimensions\, asking us to consider how qualities like color\, texture\, and weight shaped an object’s perceived efficacy and meaning. \n\nThis exhibit was a collaboration\, and displays items from several University of Michigan units: the library’s Special Collections Research Center and Papyrology Collection\, the Museum of Natural History\, and the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology. DESCRIPTION:This symposium celebrates the forthcoming 38-chapter volume The Oxford Handbook of Judaism and Film edited by Olga Gershenson. This volume offers the first comprehensive survey of the flourishing interdisciplinary field\, while challenging the geographic and conceptual boundaries of Jewish cinema. For too long\, the field has circled around a narrow set of places and stories\, about immigration\, assimilation\, antisemitism\, and the Holocaust. This Handbook proposes a broader\, more capacious understanding of Jewish film—one that moves past the assumption that Jewishness on screen must be mimetic\, historical\, or tied to the US\, Europe\, and Israel. Highlighting new research on Jews on and off screen in India\, Ethiopia\, Turkey\, Mexico\, the Arab world\, and beyond\, the contributions show how Jewishness operates as a global interpretive mode rather than a fixed set of themes. This expanded lens reveals how Jewish frames of thinking\, cultural practices\, and historical experiences structure filmmaking and spectatorship across wildly diverse geographies and contexts. DESCRIPTION:As the Medical School celebrates the anniversary of its opening in the fall of 1850\, and Michigan Medicine marks the 100th anniversary of the opening of the \"Old Main\" University Hospital that served as its flagship from 1925 to 1986\, a free museum exhibit explores 175 years of medical education\, research and clinical care. \n\nOpen to the public at the Museum on Main Street operated by the Washtenaw County Historical Society\, the exhibit includes artifacts\, photos and facts about how U-M's medical community grew from humble beginnings on the Diag to become one of the nation's largest and most respected academic medical centers. It also asks visitors to ponder their own attitudes and experiences\, and to submit memories and photos of their time working\, studying\, volunteering or receiving care at U-M's medical campus and beyond. Emily first began joining them on stage when she was just eight years old\, and increasingly since graduating from college in 2016. All three are versatile instrumentalists and excellent singers. SUMMARY:Exhibition:'Redefining the Crown' Art Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:\"Artist’s statement: For centuries\, hair has been critical to how human beings understand racial categories\, gender designations\, and class status. For Black women in particular\, hair has and continues to be tied to ethnic identity and a history of self-determination\, social justice\, and survival. Thus\, chemotherapy-induced hair loss is a devastating event for Black patients who are also more likely to be diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer subtypes necessitating chemotherapy\, carrying a 40% increased risk of dying from breast cancer.\n\nRedefining the ‘crown’: Approaching chemotherapy-induced alopecia among Black patients with breast cancer” started as a manuscript published in the scientific journal Cancer. But the work could not stop there. “Redefining the Crown” then metamorphosed into a photo essay project aimed at exploring the breast cancer journeys of six Black women and their experiences with hair loss due to chemotherapy. Though the project centers the experience of Black women\, we also acknowledge that breast cancer and chemotherapy-induced alopecia impact individuals of all genders. While the goal is to illuminate the unique stories of Black women who are affected uncommonly by this common disease\, the project is also a call to action regarding the disproportionate breast cancer-related mortality facing Black communities.\n\nIn this portraiture series\, photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks. This exhibition examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy and how their sense of cultural pride and personal identity have been redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThese survivors have redefined their own crowns. More profound than the new hairstyles they don after hair loss are the invisible crowns that they choose to wear each day: gratitude\, faith\, and resilience. What do their words mean to you? Drafted by the Confederation Congress at the same time as the Constitution\, the Ordinance outlined a framework for government in the northwest territory\, defined the rights guaranteed in that territory\, and created a process for admitting new states to the United States. The display offers a rare opportunity to view a document that helped shape the ideals and values of the young nation.

DESCRIPTION:Iranian-American artist Sheida Soleimani explores themes of migration\, political exile\, queerness\, and environmental crisis through the wildly imaginative and intricate scenarios she first stages in her studio. The tableaus—which often include live animals\, props\, even her parents—are then photographed\, documenting the artist’s process. Each photograph becomes a part of Soleimani’s rich visual storytelling.      \n\n*Flyways *presents a series of new photographs that include images evocative of her family’s history and migration story in juxtaposition with images of injured birds that are representative of Soleimani’s work as a wildlife rehabilitator. (In 2018\, Soleimani founded Congress of Birds\, a wild bird rehabilitation center in Rhode Island.) The change in her practice to include bird rescue results in a revolutionary body of work steeped in passion and articulated in a completely original visual language. DESCRIPTION:Lynn Galbreath\, a Detroit based artist who grew up in Argentina\, is a former recipient of the Creative Artists’ Grant from the Arts Foundation of Michigan and the Michigan Individual Artist Grant from Michigan Council For The Arts. Galbreath’s work has been showcased locally\, nationally and internationally in over 20 solo/two person and over 100 group exhibitions.\n\nGalbreath has an M.F.A. from the James Pearson Duffy Department of Art\, Art History\, & Design\, Wayne State University\, Detroit\, MI\; and a B.F.A. with Permanent K-12 Certification from The Gwen Frostic School of Art\, Western MI University\, Kalamazoo\, MI. Galbreath has chaperoned eleven intensive\, immersive art experiences to Italy\, Spain\, France\, Belgium\, England\, Germany\, the Netherlands\, Austria\, and the Czech Republic. Lynn is a retired Adjunct Associate Professor of Studio Art from Oakland University\, where she has been on the faculty of the Department of Art & Art History since 2000. Lynn has also instructed studio art and design at the College For Creative Studies\, University of Detroit Mercy — School of Architecture\, Macomb Community College\, Wayne State University\, and Bloomfield University School. Her work can be seen in the collections of Oakland University\, Wayne State University\, Detroit Receiving Hospital\, Children’s Hospital of Michigan\, Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital and numerous private collections.\n\nThis exhibition consists of works from a variety of series created by Galbreath over the years: Telegraph\, Storyboard\, and Working Hard for a Living. Each series represents a unique exploration of themes\, techniques\, and social commentaries that reflect Galbreath’s artistic journey and concerns for the world.\n\nTelegraph explores the aesthetic visual weights and balances between harmony and content\, diving deep into how visual elements can convey messages and emotions. This series invites viewers to reflect on the way art communicates through its formal qualities\, as well as its narrative possibilities. The careful interplay of shapes\, colors\, and textures in these works prompts an examination of the viewer's perception and emotional response. By utilizing abstract forms\, Galbreath encourages an engagement that goes beyond mere observation\, seeking to provoke thought about how aesthetic choices influence understanding and meaning.\n\nOn the other hand\, Storyboard is a series of image-driven installation paintings that vary greatly in size\, showcasing Galbreath’s versatility and creative ingenuity. The titles of the works draw inspiration from the years spent creating visuals for TV commercials and public service announcements\, illustrating how commercial art often intertwines with societal messages. This series emphasizes the profound impact visual narratives have on consumer culture and public perception\, underscoring the artist's belief in the potency of imagery to shape narratives. The installations weave a complex fabric of storytelling that challenges viewers to reconsider their relationship with media and the messages they consume daily.\n\nWorking Hard for a Living pays tribute to our sustainable and unsustainable resources\, shedding light on the individuals who toil diligently within these economic frameworks. This series highlights the hard-working suppliers of essential products\, including Farm Market Managers\, Fishmongers\, and Beach Vendors. By portraying these self-employed individuals\, often operating within informal economies\, Galbreath draws attention to the unique challenges they face. These individuals frequently contend with low\, inconsistent incomes\, long hours\, and sometimes exploitative conditions\, fostering a sense of solidarity with those who labor under such circumstances.\n\nFurthermore\, the series invites viewers to confront the broader societal structures that contribute to these inequities. Galbreath's work serves not only as a tribute but also as a call to action to consider how our consumer habits and economic policies affect the livelihoods of others. The layered narratives present in this series open a dialogue about the value we place on labor and the often unseen struggles that support our day-to-day lives. Through these explorations\, Galbreath establishes a multifaceted narrative that intertwines art with activism\, compelling audiences to engage both aesthetically and ethically with the realities depicted in the exhibition.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Materia Magica: Materiality and Ritual in the Greco-Roman World
DESCRIPTION:View a diverse array of artifacts which were created to communicate with and call upon various unseen\, supernatural forces for aid and protection. While the objects on display are disparate at first glance\, ranging from lead tablets and amulets to papyrus and parchment leaves\, they all share a common thread: they have long been labeled as \"magical\" in traditional Western scholarship.\n\nHowever\, each of these artifacts is better understood on a broad spectrum of ancient ritual\, from subversive and transgressive acts to highly social and visible ones. The exhibit highlights the objects’ oft-overlooked material dimensions\, asking us to consider how qualities like color\, texture\, and weight shaped an object’s perceived efficacy and meaning. \n\nThis exhibit was a collaboration\, and displays items from several University of Michigan units: the library’s Special Collections Research Center and Papyrology Collection\, the Museum of Natural History\, and the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology. This approach\, born of a direct engagement with the subject and the fleeting nature of the scene\, along with his wet-on-wet technique\, keeps the work fresh and immediate. By immersing himself in the environment\, Swafford captures the diverse textures and vibrant colors that characterize Detroit’s landscape\, imbuing his work with a sense of urgency and spontaneity. Each brushstroke conveys a commitment not only to visual accuracy but also to emotional resonance\, as he strives to encapsulate the spirit of a place that is both loved and contested.\n\nIn addition to these works\, the artist constantly sketches ideas both for paintings and for designing projects in his business. These sketches serve as visual language\, helping him clarify and refine his concepts before bringing them to life. They become a means to communicate ideas to clients and his crew and become an extension of his voice—an academic exercise rooted in artistic practice that fosters collaboration and innovation. The act of sketching also reflects his evolving relationship with the city\, as each drawing encapsulates fleeting moments of inspiration drawn directly from his surroundings. This duality of function—creating art for exhibition and conceptualizing designs for projects—demonstrates Swafford’s versatility and adaptability as an artist.\n\nSwafford received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting from the Rhode Island School of Design\, and while at RISD\, he was part of the European Honors Program. His education not only honed his technical skills but also broadened his artistic perspective through exposure to varied artistic traditions. He has shown his work in both solo and group exhibitions in Chicago\, Kansas City\, and New York State. Each exhibition serves as a testament to his commitment to his craft and his ability to engage diverse audiences\, offering them an opportunity to explore the complex narratives woven into each landscape.
