SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Shining Light on a Statistical Dark Age: Postal Activity in Antebellum America
DESCRIPTION:American economic historians generally believe US modern economic growth began before 1840\, was broadly based (not driven by a single activity such as cotton cultivation or the railroad)\, and the acceleration was gradual (rather than a sudden takeoff). These claims are treated as conjectures rather than solid conclusions because the census did not publish good economic data before 1840. But the earlier period was not a \"statistical dark age\,\" as sometimes asserted. From 1817 on\, systematic statistics on postal activity are available at the local level at high frequencies. This paper assembles these data and asks what we can learn.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:2025 Second Year Studio Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:August 18 - October 24\, 2025Exhibition Reception: September 11\, 3-5 p.m.\n\"In their second year\, Stamps students complete a major milestone: Second Year Studio (SYS). It’s a course where\, per the syllabus\, students 'develop the capacity to work independently by identifying\, exploring\, and pursuing a single independent project that involves multiple iterations.' Each student takes their own path\, encountering questions that can shape the direction of their creative practice—how do I manage my time? How much constraint vs. freedom do I thrive on? What subject matter do I care about most deeply? How do my ideas about my future goals intersect with the work I want to make now? At the end of the semester\, students formally report on their experience in a presentation called the Sophomore Review\, and a faculty panel offers individualized feedback. \nUntil now\, the classroom studios and review rooms have been the only place to catch a glimpse of the art and design work resulting from this pivotal course. Last year\, Associate Dean for Academic Programs Rebecca Strzelec proposed something new: an exhibition installed throughout the Art &amp\; Architecture Building during the summer that would celebrate Second Year Studio work and help to welcome the community back in the Fall. This inaugural 2025 Second Year Studio Exhibition showcases our rising third-years and transfer students\, and invites first-years and other newcomers to explore both the building\, and the creative possibilities ahead. The show features 44 students who have volunteered to participate\, yet it honors every Stamps major who reaches the SYS milestone. \nThe pieces on view span a wide array of media and capture a specific moment in each maker’s path—experiments in previously unfamiliar methods\, emergent passions\, creative risks taken\, iterations and reiterations\, and the seeds of so much future work.\"\n- Sally Clegg\, Lecturer and Student Exhibitions Coordinator\nExhibiting Artists and Designers\n\nRobin Beaney\nAdi Behar\nDavid Byun\nZoë Corley\nChloe Dennis\nViktoriya Finyak\nMaria Elena García-Murguía\nElisa Gasser\nOlivia Glynn\nRoe Halbert\nNadav Havilio\nDee Holmes\nRuby Hough\nUrvi Joshi\nEunice Kim\nHannah Kryzhan\nBen Levitsky\nJoyce Liu\nKatelyn Ma\nAlexandria Mainor\nErin Malone\nSummer Mansi\nCheyenne Moore\nElla Moxon\nShafiq Muqit\nAlex Nguyen\nAnna Noh\nLeanna Mokihana Paik\nEva Park\nMichelle Peng\nEliana Pettigrew\nZainab Rahmani\nOlivia Reed\nSky Roberts\nZachary Sebestyen\nOliver Lee St Cyr\nSophie Stillwagon\nVeronica Weinberg\nCaitlin Weingarden\nNala Arielle White\nAriel Williams\nSilas Williams\nKatherine Xu\nJoy Yang\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Behind the Curve: Rainbows and the Science and Culture of Color
DESCRIPTION:We have many significant books from the history of our understanding of rainbows and color theory\, from the writings of scholar Ḥasan Ibn al-Haytham to Isaac Newton’s 1704 Opticks. Rainbows appear across the spectrum of our collections\, and this exhibit includes a handwritten illuminated manuscript\, practical color manuals of the industrial age\, contemporary artists’ and children’s books\, and more from our vast holdings. \n\nRainbows have captivated people for all of recorded history. It’s hard not to think of them as physical objects\, but they are really just distorted images of the sun\, positioned around the viewer’s head. They require someone to perceive them to exist\, and thus have much in common with colors and color theory in general. And\, like colors\, they are about relationships: of one color next to another\, and of colors and the people who see them. The rainbow has had many different cultural interpretations over the years\, and most recently has become synonymous with gay pride\, appearing all over each June.\n\nHatcher Gallery Exhibit Room Hours:\nSunday\, 2-8pm\nMonday-Thursday\, 9am-8pm\nFriday\, 9am-4pm\nSaturday\, 11am-5pm

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Beyond Survival
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Beyond Survival\, an exhibition of works by incarcerated artists in Michigan presented by PCAP co-founder Janie Paul and the Flint Institute of the Arts. The exhibit opens May 30th and runs through September 14th. \n\nThe pieces span nearly 30 years\, many of them having been featured in our Annual Exhibition.\n\n\"Through drawings\, paintings\, and sculptures made with simple materials\, artists expose the harsh realities of incarceration while imagining life beyond prison. These works reveal a longing for home and family\, joy and beauty\, connections to nature\, flights of the imagination\, and journeys toward freedom—acts of creation made despite and in direct response to carceral conditions.\"

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Probability and Analysis Seminar: A new approach to computing matrix integrals
DESCRIPTION:This talk will focus on a new strategy introduced in the last few years which has turned out to be a very useful tool to study the asymptotic behaviour of random matrices and compute matrix integrals. It relies on the theory of free stochastic calculus developed by Biane and Speicher in the late '90s. I will explain the heuristic behind those results\, as well as list a few of them. In particular I will explain how it was used to deduce a proof of a conjecture on the strong convergence of a family of random matrices which implies the Peterson–Thom conjecture thanks to the work of Ben Hayes.

SUMMARY:Performance:Pierre Bensusan - One Guitar\, One Voice - 50th Anniversary
DESCRIPTION:\"Pierre Bensusan is one of the truly gifted musicians of our time - he plays the guitar as if it was the very soul of himself.” –George Winston\n\nFrench-Algerian acoustic guitar virtuoso\, vocalist and composer Pierre Bensusan\, surnamed “Mister DADGAD”\, has taken his unique sound to all corners of the globe. Winner of the Independent Music Award for his triple live album \"Encore\"\, voted Best World Music Guitarist by Guitar Player Magazine reader’s Poll\, winner of the Rose d’Or at the Montreux Festival for his debut album\, Pierre is recognized as one of the greatest guitar players of the 21st century.\n\nWhen Michael Hedges titles one of his compositions “Bensusan”\, you know that the inspiration behind it must be special and Pierre Bensusan certainly is. Guitarists from Leo Kottke to Larry Corryel\, to Tuck Andress\, Tommy Emmanuel\, Mark Knopfler\, Andrew York\, Andy Timmons\, to Steve Lukather… have sung his praises\, and Steve Vai released three Bensusan albums on his label Favored Nations. And it's not just guitarists who are so inspired by Pierre's music\, as a recent studio collaboration with him on Donny Osmond’s latest album “Start Again” goes to show.\n\nIf World Music means the fusion of traditional\, contemporary\, jazz\, classical and pop music\, then Bensusan is one of the most eloquent World Music musicians of our time. A pianist in his beginnings then self-taught on the guitar\, the originality of his style makes him one of today’s greatest guitarists and composers for the instrument. \n\nBorn in French Algeria\, Pierre Bensusan is an adventurer of unusual lands. His almost “sacred” music is an intimate and orchestral hymn\, a solo crossing on a multi-shell Lowden guitar subjected to the natural elements with sound molecules and finger pulp on an ebony fingerboard for open tuning - an unique and transparent technique\, under the fingers of an adventurous pilgrim. Big emotion guaranteed.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Student Dissertation Defense - Divergence in Gene Expression Plasticity
DESCRIPTION:Defense Preview:\nOrganisms respond to shifts in their environment by changing the abundance of different mRNA transcripts in their cells\, a process called \"gene expression plasticity\". We understand that gene expression plasticity itself can evolve---the same environmental shift can cause different patterns of gene expression plasticity in different genetic backgrounds. We don't\, however\, know much about how gene expression plasticity tends to evolve. Is divergence in gene expression plasticity common between closely related species? Are certain genes more or less likely to experience evolutionary changes to their patterns of expression plasticity? In this dissertation defense\, I characterize gene expression plasticity divergence in two yeast species: the baker's yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae and one of its closest related species\, Saccharomyces paradoxus. To describe the extent of gene expression plasticity divergence\, I cluster gene expression responses to six different environments. I find that each of the six environments identifies a unique set of at least 100 genes that have diverged in gene expression plasticity. Interestingly\, the genes most likely to experience this expression plasticity divergence are the genes with the fewest connections in the regulatory network. My work demonstrates that different environments can reveal hidden dimensions of molecular evolution\, and that network connectivity is associated with more robust expression plasticity over evolutionary time.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Bloody Work: Lexington and Concord 1775
DESCRIPTION:The William L. Clements Library is pleased to announce a forthcoming exhibition in recognition of the 250th Anniversary of the military hostilities that began the American Revolutionary War. The Battles of Lexington and Concord are firmly established in American memory as the culmination of a range of governmental\, political\, economic\, and social tensions that amplified in the decade leading up to 1775. In this exhibit\, visitors will have the opportunity to see original historical manuscript letters\, documents\, newspapers\, and artwork that reveal aspects of the bloody work of Empire and individual alike in April 1775.\n\nAmong the items on display will be Commander in Chief of the British Army\, General Thomas Gage's draft orders for the Concord Expedition\, April 18\, 1775\; a bundle of letters collected by former Sons of Liberty supporter Dr. Benjamin Church\, which he secretly turned over to British Army intelligence\; letters by Silas Deane\, John Hancock\, and Rachel Revere\; and much more.\n\nOpen weekdays from 12-4 pm.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:IOE 899 - Jingwen Hu\, University of Michigan
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Hu is a Professor at IOE and a Research Professor at UMTRI. His research interests primarily focus on injury biomechanics and traffic injury prevention by a multidisciplinary approach using a combination of experimental\, numerical\, and epidemiological methods. Dr. Hu is an author of 150+ peer-reviewed journal and conference papers with four Best Paper Awards. His research has been funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration\, the National Science Foundation\, the National Institute of Justice\, the Department of Defense\, and the Auto Industry.\n\nAbstract:\nRecent literature has shown that there is a growing concern of safety disparity in motor-vehicle crashes (MVCs)\, but technological tools for addressing this issue are limited. In particular\, females\, the elderly\, and obese occupants are among the vulnerable populations who are often at increased risk of death and serious injury compared with mid-size young men in MVCs. This presentation will introduce the parametric finite element (FE) human and vehicle modeling work conducted in the past decade\, along with recent machine-learning models and design optimizations. The results demonstrated the effectiveness of a population-based virtual testing framework on improving safety disparity among the diverse population.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Significant Alumni Award Featured Lecture with Laila Poisson\, PhD '09
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Biostatistics is pleased to invite you to join us in honoring Laila Poisson\, PhD '09 at the inaugural Michigan Biostatistics Significant Alumni Award Lecture.A pre-lecture reception will be held beginning at 3:00 p.m. in 1627 SPH I for all attendees of the lecture\, which will begin at 3:30 p.m. in 1690 SPH I and will feature the presentation of the inaugural Significant Alumni Award.SIGN UP FOR MEETINGS WITH DR. POISSON HERE.TITLE: Being in CollaborationABSTRACT: There are many ways to be a biostatistician. Beyond whether you identify as a Bayesian or frequentist - beyond whether your expertise is in time-to-event analysis\, missing data\, or genetics - we each have a role in the broader community of science and research. In this presentation we will explore the role of the biostatistician as a team scientist and collaborative researcher. While examples will be drawn from experiences in an academic medical center\, the principles of communication\, leadership\, statistical expertise\, and domain knowledge apply across settings. Here\, at the beginning of a new academic year\, let’s take a moment to celebrate our unique abilities and the joy of seeing their impacts – big and small – in the world around us.ABOUT THE PRESENTER: Dr. Laila Poisson\, PhD\, exemplifies the collaborative nature of biostatistics in addressing issues of significance in public health and medicine using data and science. A 2009 graduate of the Biostatistics PhD program at Michigan\, Dr. Poisson has since become a nationally recognized leader in neuro-oncology research\, data integration\, and biostatistics education. She currently serves as Vice Chair of Biostatistics in the Department of Public Health Sciences and a Senior Scientist in the Hermelin Brain Tumor Center at Henry Ford Health in Detroit. In parallel\, she is a Research Professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at Michigan State University.Click here to read more about Dr. Poisson and learn more about the Significant Alumni Award.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Biomedical Engineering Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nThe metabolic underpinnings of immune cells in various inflamed tissues\, such as the implant microenvironment or the diseased heart\, are poorly understood. For instance\, polylactide (PLA) is the most widely used biopolymer in medicine. Yet\, for decades\, PLA had been thought to activate immune cells by reducing surrounding pH because PLA biodegrades into monomers and oligomers of lactic acid. During my talk\, I will discuss an alternative paradigm underscoring immune cell metabolism (immunometabolism) as the pivotal determinant of the proinflammatory versus pro-regenerative tissue microenvironment with biodegradable and non-biodegradable biomaterial examples. Further related to tissue engineering\, I will present on reversing established cardiac dysfunction and fibrosis in heart failure (following myocardial infarction) via targeted and enzyme-responsive nanomaterials. Finally\, I will unveil my vision to revolutionize therapeutic strategies for the various phenotypes of heart failure by leveraging the metabolic underpinnings of immune and stromal cell populations\, thereby engineering next-generation clinical interventions that shape the future of medicine.

SUMMARY:Performance:Tyler Ramsey
DESCRIPTION:Gentle indie-folk from the former lead guitarist from Band of Horses\n\nTyler Ramsey is a singer-songwriter and guitarist known for his evocative\, genre-blending sound that fuses modern folk\, rock\, and alternative influences. Based outside of Asheville\, North Carolina\, Ramsey gained recognition as a key member of Band of Horses\, contributing to their soaring indie-folk sound across three studio albums\, each of which included Ramsey originals including Grammy-nominated \"Infinite Arms\" (2010). As a songwriter and guitarist\, his intricate playing and introspective lyricism became a defining element of the band's music.\n\nWith masterful guitar work and a gift for storytelling\, Tyler Ramsey continues to carve out his own space in the world of folk and indie rock. He has released a series of critically acclaimed albums\, including \"For the Morning\" (2019)\, which showcased his signature blend of fingerpicked guitar\, pedal steel\, and atmospheric rock textures. His latest album\, \"New Lost Ages\"\, marks a new creative milestone\, produced by Phil Ek (Fleet Foxes\, The Shins\, Father John Misty) and recorded in Seattle’s Avast Recording Co. The project captures Ramsey's evolution as both a songwriter and musician\, balancing moments of quiet introspection with grand\, sweeping arrangements.\n\nRamsey’s music is deeply rooted in nature and personal experience\, with much of \"New Lost Ages\" inspired by his life in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Seeking solace during a tumultuous period\, he retreated to a secluded cabin near his home\, channeling his reflections on change\, fatherhood\, and artistic perseverance into a collection of deeply resonant songs. The resulting album\, with contributions from musicians like Morgan Henderson (Fleet Foxes)\, Sean T. Lane(Ann Wilson)\, and Carl Broemel (My Morning Jacket)\, captures both the intimacy of his songwriting and the expansive sonic landscapes he crafts.\n\nTyler’s music\, praised by outlets such as Relix and NPR\, resonates with listeners seeking depth\, honesty\, and a connection to something timeless. \"New Lost Ages\" stands as a testament to his journey—one that embraces both the uncertainties of life and the enduring power of song

SUMMARY:Performance:Jobi Riccio
DESCRIPTION:Born and raised in Morrison\, Colorado - a tourist town in the foothills outside of Denver that’s home to Red Rocks Amphitheater - Jobi Riccio grew up surrounded by music and found inspiration in artists ranging from Sheryl Crow to Joni Mitchell. Sonically\, Jobi’s music exists between worlds\, melding the classic craftsmanship of her songwriting with modern indie-leaning production to forge a lush\, expansive sound that feels traditional and experimental all at once.\n\nShe has received significant acclaim for her songwriting\, including winning the 2019 NewSong Music Competition and the 2019 Lee Villiare Scholarship from her alma mater Berklee College of Music. More recently Jobi was awarded the 2023 Newport Folk Festival John Prine Fellowship\, chosen as a 2024 Luck Reunion Artist On The Rise and was nominated for the Americana Music Association&#39\;s 2024 Americana Honors and Awards in the category of Emerging Artist of the Year.\n\nHer debut album\, Whiplash (out now on Yep Roc)\, has garnered praise from The New York Times\, Billboard\, NPR\, and The Nashville Scene to name a few. “This is the kind of album where you leave knowing an artist better than you ever thought you could in less than 40 minutes\, and learn a thing or two about yourself in the process” Says Marissa R. Moss\, who named Whiplash her number one Country album of 2023 for Stereogum. Not one to be confined into any one mold\, Riccio’s Whiplash introduces influences from a variety of genres\, while still holding space for her love for all decades of country and americana music.

DESCRIPTION:“The Gibson Brothers have built their legacy upon a sound that salutes the past while still pushing forward.” –Rolling Stone\n\nThere’s a reason why Ricky Skaggs pulled Eric and Leigh Gibson off the stage at the Ryman two decades ago and offered to produce their debut record. The same thing that led David Ferguson and Grammy Award winning producer and Black Keys frontman Dan Auerbach to co-write and produce their 14th album “Mockingbird” (2018) and release it on his own label Easy Eye Sound alongside cultural icons such as Hank Williams Jr. and Dr. John: The Gibson Brothers are the real deal. They can pick. They can sing .And they can write a damn good country song. They’ve won about every bluegrass award you can name and released albums on almost every premier Americana label you can think of including Sugar Hill and Rounder\, and\, if that’s not enough\, their songs have been recorded by bluegrass legends no less than Del McCoury.

SUMMARY:Performance:Gabe Lee // King Margo
DESCRIPTION:Fresh songwriting out of Nashville\n\nEqual parts classic songwriter and modern-day storyteller\, Gabe Lee has built his own bridge between country\, folk and rock. Storytelling has been an anchor of Lee's music since the very beginning. Raised by Taiwanese parents in Nashville\, TN\, he left home during his teenage years and headed to Indiana\, where he obtained college degrees in literature and journalism. Lee launched his career as a genre-bending musician after returning to Tennessee\, quickly progressing from dive bar gigs to high-profile opening slots (including shows with Jason Isbell\, Los Lobos\, Molly Tuttle\, and other artists who\, like him\, blurred the lines between roots-rock\, country\, and other forms of American folk music) to his own headlining shows. Throughout it all\, he drew upon the narrative skills he'd sharpened as a student. If albums like Honky-Tonk Hell and The Hometown Kid often unfolded like autobiographical entries from his road journal\, then Drink the River shows an even broader range of his storytelling abilities. Lee isn't just writing songs about himself\; he's writing songs about all of us. And maybe\, in doing so\, he can bring us a little closer together. \n\nKing Margo is a magnetic alt-country/Americana act based in Nashville\, TN. Their album “Waters Rise” is filled with what Saving Country Music proclaims as “interesting and curious textures throughout\, unique and unexpected approaches to songs\, and inspired songwriting graced by soaring performances.” The heart of the group is duo Lucciana Costa and Rachel Coats\, though they often bring their friends along for a full band experience. King Margo is a road-tested band through and through\, and they are known for putting on a high-energy show complimented by thoughtful songwriting.

SUMMARY:Performance:Shemekia Copeland
DESCRIPTION:“The greatest blues singer of her generation” —Washington Post\n\nShemekia Copeland possesses one of the most instantly recognizable and deeply soulful roots music voices of our time. The multi-GRAMMY nominee is beloved and honored worldwide for the fearlessness\, honesty and humor of her revelatory songs\, as well as for her winning\, engaging personality. The Chicago Tribune says\, “Copeland is the greatest female blues vocalist working today. There’s no mistaking the majesty of her instrument\, nor the ferocity of her delivery.”\n\n On Copeland’s new album\, Blame It On Eve\, the songs all hit hard\, with jaw-dropping performances that instantly take hold and command repeated listening. “There’s serious business on the new album\,” Copeland says\, “but there are a lot of smiles here too\, a lot of joyous moments. It’s my blues for sure but it’s the brighter side. Issues are always important to me\, but so is rocking\, dancing and just having fun. And that’s something we all can all agree on.”\n\nWith Blame It On Eve\, Copeland embarks on what she calls “a vacation from all the heaviness.” Blame It On Eve contains plenty of Copeland’s trademark bold and courageous songs\, but here Copeland is also looking to unplug from the weight of the world. “My last three records have dealt with breaking news\,” she says. “This record is for people like me who want a break from the news.”

DESCRIPTION:“A night with the Milk Carton Kids is an unforgettable night of entertainment” –Folk Alley\n\nFounded in 2011\, The Milk Carton Kids — Joey Ryan and Kenneth Pattengale — swiftly emerged as a major force in the American folk tradition\, blending ethereal harmonies and intricate musicianship with a uniquely powerful brand of contemporary songcraft. Another Grammy nomination followed in 2015 for Best American Roots Performance with \"The City of Our Lady\" from their acclaimed third studio album\, Monterey\, and their 2018 album All The Things That I Did and All The Things That I Didn't Do received a Grammy nomination for Best Engineered Album\, Non-Classical. They received their fourth Grammy nomination for 2022’s I Only See The Moon\, nominated for “Best Folk Album.”\n\n\"Both of us have now lived enough life to understand that maybe one of the purposes we were put on Earth for is to sing together\, to write songs together\, to make music together\,\" notes guitarist/vocalist Kenneth Pattengale. \"It has truly provided a direction for our lives.\" Ryan adds\, \"It's like a successful marriage in that there's always been enough there between us collaboratively in the way that we work together\, sing together\, play together. It's a very special thing. And I don't think we ever took that for granted.\"

SUMMARY:Performance:Katie Pruitt: Time Wasn't Wasted Tour
DESCRIPTION:Time Wasn’t Wasted Tour\n\nKatie Pruitt is living proof of music’s power to transform the way we experience the world. Soon after the arrival of her acclaimed debut Expectations—a 2020 LP on which she documented her journey in growing up queer in the Christian South—the Georgia-bred singer / songwriter / guitarist heard from countless listeners that her songs had impacted their lives on an elemental level. With her sophomore album Mantras\, the Nashville-based musician now looks inward to explore such matters as gender identity\, self-compassion or the lack thereof\, and the struggle for peace in times of chaos and uncertainty—ultimately arriving at a body of work that speaks to the strength in undoing harmful self-beliefs and fully living your truth.\n\nMainly produced by Collin Pastore and Jake Finch (both known for their work with boygenius and Lucy Dacus)\, Mantras delves deeper into the empathetic storytelling and incisive self-examination that defined Expectations—an album that earned Pruitt a nomination for Emerging Artist of the Year from the Americana Music Association\, in addition to drawing praise from major outlets like Rolling Stone and Pitchfork. This time around\, Pruitt sets her lived-in lyricism to a folk-leaning sound informed by her love for the more experimental edges of indie-rock\, stacking her songs with plenty of propulsive grooves and overdriven guitars.\n\nLooking over the tracklist to Mantras\, Pruitt notes that a certain narrative thread emerged without her intention. “I didn’t realize it at the time\, but the throughline for this record ended up being my own personal journey of letting go and learning how to love myself again—it begins with tension\, frustration\, and fear and resolves to a place of acceptance\, surrender\, and stillness\,” she says. “I hope when people hear the record they feel what I felt after writing it\, which was a sense of trusting myself and trusting that—no matter how bad things look—there’s always hope where there’s fear. I know that so much of the time we feel alone in our pain\, so hopefully these songs help everyone to see that they can work through those big life changes and end up loving themselves a lot more.”

SUMMARY:Performance:The Langan Band
DESCRIPTION:“That a few guys from Glasgow could conspire to create such an immense sound between them is not unprecedented\, but to achieve this with such lyrical and instrumental flair is a rare\, rare thing” –Folk Radio UK\n\nFor over 15 years now\, the three members of The Langan Band have been carving out their own lawlessly virtuosic path of sound\; rampaging through the boundaries of conventional genre and cavorting into the territories of wild abandon\, purest intimacy\, and unconditional musical elation.\n\nThe trio were initially brought together by a deep respect of traditional song and music\, yet they discovered a mutual love of the evisceration and regeneration of these pieces into provocative and fascinating new compositions\, as was recognised by the band winning the prestigious Danny Kyle Award at Glasgow’s Celtic Connections Festival at the start of their journey together. This sound and process went on to inform the band’s now mostly original repertoire\, and has resulted in a musical experience quite unlike any other.\n\nAyrshire-born John Langan is found centre-stage\, seated on an explosive foot percussion rig of his own devising and fronting the trio with intricate fiery guitar rhythms and witheringly sweet and scathing vocals. To his right stands Alastair Caplin\, a classically trained violinist equally discerning in both the London Prog-Folk/Jazz scenes he occupied for years and also the blistering traditional reels and jigs of his native Outer Hebrides. Stage left is the domain of Angus-born Dave Tunstall and his double bass\; from here emanates a seductive concoction of eerily-bowed soundscapes\, heart-stopping bass lines\, and in conjunction with Caplin’s blurred bowing a truly monumental wall of orchestral noise. The sound of the group reaches its zenith when all of these instruments are joined by the three voices singing together in razor-tight harmony to create an absolute cacophony of joy.\n\nWhilst it is possible to see the evidence of influences the band have drawn on and enjoyed (Trad. Scots music\, Eastern European Gypsy\, Bluegrass and American Old-Time to name a few)\, the true nature of the sound from The Langan Band is best described as un-pigeon-holeable\, yet utterly irresistible.\n\nIn 2024 the band broke onto the North American market with 5 tours of USA & Canada. Through huge mainstage performances at festivals such as Telluride Bluegrass and radio play such as the prestigious Mountain Stage Radio\, they are building a loyal and wild new fanbase across the Atlantic.

SUMMARY:Performance:The Wildwoods
DESCRIPTION:“The tonality & harmony of The Wildwoods’ voices are impeccable” –Americana Highways\n\nFrom the heart of Lincoln\, Nebraska\, The Wildwoods have grown into a folk/Americana trio rooted in rich harmonies and heartfelt storytelling. Formed by husband-and-wife duo Noah (guitar) and Chloe Gose (violin)\, and joined by longtime friend and bassist Andrew Vaggalis\, the band crafts songs that feel both intimate and expansive—tales of home\, hope\, and the open road.\n\nTheir newest release\, Dear Meadowlark (2025)\, is a love letter to the land that raised them. Inspired by seasons of touring\, homesickness\, and rediscovery\, the album weaves chamber-folk arrangements with poetic lyricism\, highlighting their signature harmonies and acoustic instrumentation. It follows a growing discography that includes Sweet Nostalgia (2017)\, Birdie & Goose (2017)\, Across a Midwest Sky (2019)\, and Foxfield Saint John (2023).\n\nInfluenced by artists like Watchhouse\, Nickel Creek\, and Gillian Welch & David Rawlings\, The Wildwoods blend folk\, bluegrass\, and indie sensibilities into something uniquely their own. Their music is lush with nature imagery\, layered harmonies\, and an emotional sincerity that captures the quiet beauty of their Midwestern roots.\n\nWhether weaving tales from their rural upbringing or capturing fleeting moments from life on tour\, The Wildwoods create a sound that feels like home…wherever you are.

SUMMARY:Performance:The Claudettes
DESCRIPTION:“A skewed cabaret band of blues\, jazz and rockabilly…a sensibility that feels equal parts James Dean and David Lynch.” –Minneapolis Star-Tribune\n\nSix albums into their lauded career\, the Claudettes (of Chicago) continue to put a fascinating new spin on American roots music. Blues and R&B are laced with punk spirit and film-noir moods to create the band’s singular “garage cabaret” sound. The Claudettes have earned worldwide acclaim with their recordings and concerts that are equal parts heart\, musicianship and theatrical flair. Force-of-nature vocalist Rachel Williams (who dominates the stage like a glam-rock rebirth of Annie Lennox and renowned pianist/songwriter Johnny Iguana join the positively heroic rhythm section of Zach Verdoorn (bass\, guitar\, vocals) and Michael Caskey (drums). Outside the Claudettes\, Iguana has toured with Junior Wells and Otis Rush\, played on many Grammy-nominated albums and recorded with Buddy Guy\, Junior Wells\, Derek Trucks\, Mick Jagger\, Keith Richards\, Johnny Winter and more. Johnny is also composer of the score for the Emmy-winning smash FX/Hulu series “The Bear.”

SUMMARY:Performance:Abigail Lapell
DESCRIPTION:“weightless notes and melodies that pierce our hearts…. somewhere between Gillian Welch and Laura Veir.” –Rolling Stone\n\nToronto songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Abigail Lapell returns with Anniversary\, an evocative collection of original love songs. Produced with Great Lake Swimmers’ Tony Dekker\, the album was recorded at 200-year-old St Mark’s Church in Niagara-on-the-Lake\, Ontario. Dekker helped shape the sessions’ spooky\, resonant sound and also lent his voice to a couple of spellbinding duets.\n\nLapell’s deft lyrics jostle with love song tropes\, grappling with love’s finitude and the irony of how codependency and longing are revered in popular music. A ghost story is woven through the album: waltzing in the dusty barroom country of “Blue Blaze\,” buried in the superstitious lyrical streak of “Rattlesnake” and audible in a wheezing organ as it shuts down at the end of “Footsteps.” Still\, Anniversary emerges as an earnest celebration of commitment. Earworms like “Anniversary Song” and “Someone Like You” showcase intricately layered harmonies\, while closer “Stars” affirms that there’s no place the speaker would rather be than with the one she loves.\n\nLapell has garnered three Canadian Folk Music Awards\, hit number one on Canadian folk radio and reached a staggering 40 million + streams on Spotify.

SUMMARY:Performance:Dan Rodriguez & Heather Maloney
DESCRIPTION:Massachusetts-based “writer song-singer” Heather Maloney found music in the midst of three years at a meditation center\, honing a sound moored in days of silent reflection and reverence for storytellers like Joni\, Rilke\, Ken Burns\, and the anonymous authors of Zen parables. While she eventually traded the quiet\, structured life of a yogi for the kinetic life of a touring musician\, the core of her songwriting has remained centered around the same curiosity about our inner world and the desire to articulate it through storytelling.\n\nWith over 1\,000 international shows and 8 studio albums under her belt\, she has released her most personal record to date\, “Exploding Star”. Written in the wake of her father’s death\, “Exploding Star” is a collection of 12 songs that Maloney originally had no intentions of recording or releasing until some of her closest friends and family convinced her otherwise.\n\nDan Rodriguez is a whiskey & beer drinking\, fishing & hunting loving\, motorcycle riding\, quality food eating\, hippie sympathizing\, hobby farm running\, people loving\, husband & father who lives in Minneapolis and shares a life with his amazing wife and two adorable sons named Oak and Alder. Dan grew up in the suburbs of Detroit\, MI\, and moved to Minneapolis to study music. He stayed because he’s one of those crazy people that enjoys the snow and cold weather.\n\nWhen not in his studio writing and cutting records\, or on the road playing shows\, Dan is usually playing in the woods with his boys\, tending to his backyard chickens\, eating fresh veggies from his wife’s huge garden\, making syrup from their maple grove\, or doing one of his many outdoor hobbies.

SUMMARY:Performance:John Craigie
DESCRIPTION:“…the lovechild of John Prine and Mitch Hedberg with a vagabond troubadour edge.” —The Stranger\n\nJohn Craigie has mastered the art of creating live shows that feel more like intimate conversations than performances. Infusing humor\, wit\, and poignant storytelling\, his shows are a space where audience members feel like old friends. Whether he's headlining solo or sharing the stage with longtime collaborators\, Craigie’s ability to make his crowd laugh\, reflect\, and connect is second to none. As he prepares to release Greatest Hits... Just Kidding... Live - No Hits\, his latest live album captures the warmth and spontaneity of these memorable nights.\n\nAt this point\, there have been quite a few good shows in the rearview… \n\nAs a tried-and-true performer\, he has regularly sold out solo tours in addition to hitting the road with the likes of Langhorne Slim\, Brett Dennen\, Mason Jennings\, Bella White and Jack Johnson. He has picked up fans with sets at Newport Folk Festival\, Pickathon\, Edmonton Folk Festival\, and High Sierra Music Festival. Including numerous European tours and his first Australian tour in spring of 2024 Moreover\, his annual river trip on the Tuolumne River—just outside of Yosemite in California—has remained a hit with his audience\, hosting one sellout after another. Giving back as much as possible\, he notably launched the #KeepItWarm Tour during the holidays. By donating $1 from every ticket sale\, this headline run has raised money for regional non-profits with the goal of fighting food insecurity. An avowed Beatles acolyte\, he has performed acoustic renditions of the albums Abbey Road and Let It Be live in front of packed crowds and partnered with Record Store Day for limited-edition vinyl releases of those concerts. \n\nSimultaneously\, his catalog has continued to reel in tens of millions of streams fueled by favorites such as “I Am California\,” “Highway Blood\,” “Don’t Ask\,” and “Microdose.” Maintaining a prolific pace\, 2024’s Pagan Church saw him join forces with TK & The Holy Know-Nothings. Among many highlights\, it logged six weeks at #1 on the Americana Radio Albums Chart. Inciting critical applause\, Pop Matters raved\, “All of Craigie’s songs are made of something truly ineffable\,” and American Highways assured\, “Along with excellent musicianship across the album\, there are genuinely pretty moments on ‘Pagan Church.’” Meanwhile\, he joined forces with Langhorne Slim for a duet song “Out On The Road.” \n\nTo him\, the live albums seek to achieve a sound where the listener will feel like they’re in the venue\, sitting and experiencing the show with the rest of the crowd.

SUMMARY:Performance:Willi Carlisle
DESCRIPTION:New Music!\n\nFolksinger Willi Carlisle holds tight the conviction that love is bigger than hate\, and no-one is expendable. Carlisle’s music has always been a dance between absurdity\, spectacle\, and philosophy. On his fourth studio album\, Winged Victory\, Carlisle returns with his signature blend of traditionally-rooted folk music and kaleidoscope of oddball characters to confer with his core tenets in more overt and provocative ways. \n\nCarlisle delivers Victory as the next chapter in his long-running direct address to the hope that by understanding our collective suffering we might be free of it. He’s intent on creating art and a well-rounded life in a broken world. The idea began with 2022’s Peculiar\, Missouri when Carlisle proclaimed “your heart’s a big tent\, everybody gets in.” After gathering together all the world’s weirdos and misfits under the big tent\, with 2024’s Critterland\, Carlisle let them loose into the world. Now\, on Winged Victory\, they speak for themselves\, unencumbered by social expectations. \n \nVictory\, Carlisle’s first self-produced album\, will be released June 27 via Signature Sounds. It both indulges a few of his wildest dreams (including a version of Richard Thompson’s “Beeswing\,” among several traditional folk song covers)\, and feels like the inevitable sequel to Critterland’s charismatic menagerie of chaos. Though occasionally raunchy\, and routinely provocative\, Victory is not afraid to make a spectacle for the sake of a point. Victory should be understood as a reflection. It revels in the beauty of tiny\, monetarily-worthless moments and things\, offering with them a consideration of our innate humanity.

SUMMARY:Performance:Selwyn Birchwood
DESCRIPTION:\"A remarkable\, contemporary bluesman...a powerhouse young guitarist and soulful vocalist” –Rolling Stone\n\nAlthough award-winning Florida musician Selwyn Birchwood is firmly rooted in the tradition\, the young guitarist\, lap steel player\, songwriter and vocalist sets a course for the future of the blues with his visionary\, original music. Birchwood\, whose band features the pulsating interplay of his blistering guitar with Regi Oliver's driving baritone sax\, deploys a singular sound and style all his own. He calls it \"Electric Swamp Funkin' Blues\,\" an intoxicating mix of deep blues\, blistering\, psychedelic-tinged rock\, booty-shaking funk and sweet Southern soul\, played and sung with the fire-and-brimstone fervor of a revival tent preacher with a hellhound on his trail. Tastemaker Americana music magazine No Depression says\, \"Selwyn Birchwood reaches back in the blues tradition to launch something out of this world.\"\n\nOn his new release\, Exorcist (his fourth for Alligator and sixth overall)\, Birchwood delivers the most far-reaching\, musically adventurous album of his career. \n\nLive\, Birchwood is a force of nature. His ability to win over an audience--any audience--is proven night after night on the bandstand. With his warm\, magnetic personality\, Birchwood is as down-to-earth as his music is thought-provoking and electrifying. With his band feeding off his energy\, the 6'3\" musician roams the stage barefoot\, ripping out memorable guitar licks with ease\, his soulful\, rocks-and-gravel vocals firing up his fans. When he sits down to play his lap steel\, he takes the crowd to a whole other level\, with the music exorcising any bad times and troubles.

SUMMARY:Performance:VOICES feat. Jade Nicole
DESCRIPTION:Jade Nicole is a singer/songwriter and background vocalist from the Metro Detroit area. Since a teenager\, Jade has used songwriting as a tool to understand the world around them and the world within them. This process began a decade long journey of finding their voice\, getting comfortable with sharing\, and trusting in their vision and dreams. Now\, with the goal of inviting people to cry at their shows\, Jade shares personal and vulnerable stories of their life and relationships through deeply honest lyrics and heartfelt melodies. Over time\, Jade learned that their art is most powerful when it is shared with others\, vulnerably and with intention. To be witnessed is to be alive\, and this is something dear to the heart of this artist.\n\nVoices is a series of artist-cultivated concerts at The Ark conceived and created by Ann Arbor musician Kyler Wilkins\, AKA vocal looping artist Ki5. The series seeks to expand the representation of Michigan BIPOC artists and audiences at The Ark. Each show\, intentional time will be taken to get to know each artist in the form of brief interviews and musical breaks to have them speak about their journey as musicians and performers with the hope that people in the audience are more connected to and inspired by those voices.

SUMMARY:Performance:Eilen Jewell
DESCRIPTION:“Songs that convey a full range of human feeling\" –Allmusic\n\nHailed by American Songwriter as one of America’s most intriguing\, creative\, and idiosyncratic voices\, Eilen Jewell rises from the ashes on her captivating new album\, Get Behind The Wheel\, picking up the pieces of her shattered world and finding new purpose and meaning after watching her marriage\, her band\, and what felt like her entire career fall apart in a series of spectacular\, heartbreaking implosions. Co produced by multi instrumental wizard Will Kimbrough (Todd Snider\, Hayes Carll)\, the collection pushes the acclaimed singer and songwriters trademark blend of vintage roots noir into more psychedelic territory\, with spacious\, cinematic arrangements complementing her revelatory explorations of grief\, loss\, resilience\, and redemption.\n\nAn Idaho native\, Jewell built her career the old fashioned way\, touring relentlessly with the kind of undeniable live show that converts the uninitiated into instant acolytes. Over the course of nine albums\, she has crisscrossed the globe countless times and shared bills with the likes of Lucinda Williams\, Loretta Lynn\, Mavis Staples\, Wanda Jackson\, George Jones\, and Emmylou Harris\, Rolling Stone lauded Jewell’s clever writing\, while\, NPR declared that she has a sweet and clear voice with a killer instinct lurking beneath the shiny surface\, and The Washington Post mused that if Neko Case\, Madeleine Peyroux and Billie Holiday had a baby girl who grew up to front a rockabilly band\, she would probably sound a lot like Eilen Jewell.
