DESCRIPTION:Lunchtime yoga is an opportunity to provide your body with some gentle movement\, strengthening\, stretching and balancing.  We will use the poses (asanas) to reconnect with your senses\, to breathe some life back into ourselves\, find internal balance and to recover from the   efforts of the work week. (...in your own words)\nCoauthors: Thomas Crossley (University of Michigan)\, Peter Levell (Institute for Fiscal Studies\, London) and Sofia Sierra Vasquez (University of St. Gallen\, Switzerland). \nA longstanding puzzle in macroeconomics is why individuals with similar levels of available liquidity can have very different marginal propensities to consume (MPCs). We use a new approach to better investigate differences in consumer behaviour in response to hypothetical\, one-off gains and losses: using open-ended questions and text analysis to understand the motives underlying consumers' decisions. We find little evidence that misunderstanding of the question or other response errors explain the puzzling responses. High-liquidity individuals with high MPCs often cite mental accounting motives. Apparently illiquid individuals report a range of coping mechanisms in response to a loss\, including labour supply responses\, relying on friends and family and selling possessions. This implies greater effective liquidity than narrow financial measures indicate. The analysis provides an example of the utility of open format survey questions in understanding economic behaviour. \n\nThomas (Tom) Crossley is a Research Professor in SRC and Director of the Panel Study for Income Dynamics (PSID). He is also a co-investigator (and former Associate Director) of Understanding Society (The UK Household Longitudinal Study\, sister study to the PSID). From 2016 to 2022 he was an ONS Fellow and member of the Office for National Statistics' Economics Experts Working Group (the ONS is the National Statistical Agency in the UK) and he was also for many years an advisor to Statistics Canada. Tom is an elected member of the Conference on Research in Income and Wealth (CRIW) and previously served as an elected Council Member for the International Association for Research in Income and Wealth (IARIW).  His research interests include household behaviour\, financial security\, and living standards\; the design\, collection and analysis of survey data\; and economic measurement more broadly.

DESCRIPTION:University Carillonist Tiffany Ng performs on the Charles Baird Carillon\, an instrument of 53 bronze bells located inside the Burton Memorial Tower. The largest bell\, which strikes the hour\, weighs 12 tons\, while the smallest bell\, 4½ octaves above\, weighs just 15 pounds.\n\nThirty-minute recitals are performed on the Charles Baird Carillon at noon every weekday that classes are in session\, followed by visitor Q&A with the carillonist. The bell chamber may be accessed via a combination of elevator and stairs. Take the elevator to the highest floor possible (floor 8)\, and then climb two flights of stairs (39 steps) to the bell chamber (floor 10). Hearing protection earmuffs are provided for visitors. Be prepared to walk on ice and snow in the bell chamber during winter. Built in 1936\, the Charles Baird Carillon is not ADA accessible. Visitors with mobility concerns are invited to visit the Lurie Carillon.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Interdisciplinary QC-CM Seminar | From Vortexable Bands to Anomalous Hall Crystals
DESCRIPTION:The pursuit of fractionalized particles outside the extreme conditions of a quantizing magnetic field has been a longstanding quest of solid state physics. Recent experiments have reported fractional quantized anomalous hall states — the analogue of fractional quantum hall (FQAH) states but at zero magnetic field — in twisted bilayers of MoTe2 and rhombohedral graphene systems. When should we expect such unusual topological phases\, and what new phenomena should they have? To answer these questions I first introduce the framework of “vortexable” or “ideal” Chern bands. Vortexable bands have a fixed operator that introduces a vortex into any band wave function while keeping the state entirely within the same band\, just as in the lowest Landau level. Such bands admit trial wave functions for FQAH states\, akin to Laughlin states\, that are exact many-body ground states for short-ranged interactions in the absence of dispersion. Nearly-vortexable bands appear in twisted MoTe2\, explaining their fractionalized physics. I will present many body calculations showing tMoTe2 should admit a broad composite Fermi liquid phase (a non-Fermi liquid) centered around 3.6°. I will then shift to the stranger case of rhombohedral graphene whose fractional phases may be due to an anomalous Hall crystal\, a topological analogue of a Wigner crystal. Finally\, I will present an optical signature involving “extinguished” circular dichroism as a means to identify nearly-vortexable Chern bands.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Learning Seminar in Algebraic Combinatorics: The simplicial generators of the Chow ring of matroids
DESCRIPTION:Last term\, we learned about the Chow ring of a matroid\, given by certain generators and relations. Backman\, Eur and Simpson found a linear change of variables to new generators\, called the simplicial generators\, and found a basis for the Chow ring\, called the nested basis. We'll review the wonderful compactification of a matroid and the corresponding Chow ring\, and then we will explain what the simplicial generators and monomial generators mean\, both geometrically and combinatorially. Next week\, Calvin will explain how we use these tools to prove that Chow rings of matroids are Poincare duality algebras.

DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, I will talk about the nilpotent orbits in the Lie algebra of a connected reductive group G over a non-archimedean local field of characteristic zero\, and explain how these can be used to define a useful invariant of any admissible representation V of G\, called the wavefront set of V. In order to do so\, I will define the (distribution) character of an admissible representation\, and discuss Harish-Chandra's local character expansion. Time permitting\, I will mention some recent work on computing wavefront sets\, and talk about relating wavefront sets to the local Langlands correspondence.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:MIPSE Seminar | Direct and Model-Independent Temperature Measurements in Extreme States of Matter
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nTemperature is a cornerstone of thermodynamics\, yet its measurement in high-pressure solids\, dense opaque plasmas\, and highly ionized systems remains one of the greatest challenges in extreme physics. Accurate temperature diagnostics are essential for understanding material behavior under such conditions\, but traditional methods are often hindered by opacity and limited sensitivity. Using high-resolution inelastic X-ray scattering (IXS) at facilities like the Linac Coherent Light Source and European X-ray Free Electron Laser\, we developed an advanced diagnostic capable of directly probing bulk ion temperatures. This technique leverages the exceptional resolution and narrow bandwidth of IXS to detect small energy shifts and broadenings in scattered X-ray spectra\, offering unprecedented insights into the ion dynamics of matter in extreme states. In this talk\, I will highlight how IXS has been utilized to address: (1) Electron-ion equilibration rates in warm dense matter\, (2) superheating of solids to temperatures far exceeding their theoretical stability limits\, (3) bond hardening under non-equilibrium conditions\, and (4) Ion-acoustic wave propagation. The ability to directly measure ion temperatures and dynamics not only advances understanding of fundamental physics but also opens pathways for experimental research in HED science and beyond.\n\nAbout the Speaker: \nThomas White is an Associate Professor of Physics at the University of Nevada-Reno. He earned the MS in physics from the Univ. of Bath (2005) and Ph.D. in Atomic and Laser Physics from Univ. of Oxford (2015)\, where his dissertation earned the Culham Thesis Prize. Before joining UNR in 2017\, he was a postdoc at Imperial College London and Univ. of Oxford. White’s research focuses on the behavior of matter under extreme conditions\, using high-power optical and X-ray free-electron lasers to replicate environments found in planetary interiors and fusion plasmas. His work combines experiments at facilities such as the NIF and the European X-ray Free Electron Laser with advanced quantum-mechanical simulations. His research is supported by the Department of Energy\, National Nuclear Security Administration\, and National Science Foundation. In 2021\, White received the NSF CAREER Award and UNR’s Mousel-Feltner Excellence in Research Award. DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, I will prove a Weyl law for the spectrum of randomly perturbed Berezin–Toeplitz operators\, generalizing a result of Martin Vogel from 2020 about quantizations of torii. I will first survey some results about randomly perturbed non–self-adjoint operators\, then explain the construction of Berezin–Toeplitz operators (which are quantizations of smooth functions on compact Kähler manifolds)\, then discuss the main idea of the proof\, which requires constructing an exotic calculus of Berezin–Toeplitz operators.

DESCRIPTION:Talk Description: \nSoutheast Michigan is being hit with more water each year as a result of climate change. This water moves within watershed boundaries\, but does not respect political boundaries. If we are going to address the threat of more extreme rainfall\, drier dry spells and more freeze/thaw events in Southeast Michigan\, we must collaborate across municipal boundaries and think about upstream and downstream solutions. The Huron River Watershed Council is partnering with U of M and other research institutions to build resilience to climate change in our river and watershed communities. While we must foster collaboration between local governments\, we must also foster watershed education and develop stewardship values in young people. The Clinton River Watershed Council is partnering with U of M to do this work by enhancing student streamside experiences and incorporating climate change into curriculums. Regionally\, both Clinton River Watershed Council and Huron River Watershed Council are actively working with sister watershed groups across Southeast Michigan on collaborative initiatives that respond to the impacts of climate change through action\, including deep investments in green stormwater infrastructure. \n\nAbout the Speakers \nRebecca Esselman\, Executive Director\, Huron River Watershed Council\n\nRebecca Esselman is the Executive Director of the Huron River Watershed Council. She has more than 20 years of experience in water resource management and river protection. In her 14 years with HRWC she has led the organization’s climate adaptation efforts\, implementing projects that prepare the river\, as well as cities and towns\, for a changing climate. She is a skilled facilitator\, successfully bringing together diverse constituents to make progress on some of the most pressing issues facing our freshwater resources. Rebecca works at the state and regional level to increase the impact of HRWC’s work and create enabling conditions for the protection of the freshwater throughout the Great Lakes region. Prior to joining HRWC\, Rebecca spent ten years with the Nature Conservancy. She holds a Master of Science in Conservation Ecology from the University of Georgia and a Bachelor of Science in Botany from Michigan State University. \n\nJennifer Hill\, Executive Director\, Clinton River Watershed Council\n\nJennifer is the Executive Director of the Clinton River Watershed Council. Jennifer brings 19 years of experience in Great Lakes policy advocacy\, non-profit organizational management\, and coalition and partnership building. In her role with CRWC\, Jennifer provides strategic direction to the organization\, leads partnership building\, and fosters program development. Jennifer has worked extensively in her career to develop unique partnerships\, coalitions\, and networks aimed at addressing the most pressing problems to the Great Lakes and she brings that skillset with her to CRWC every day. In her previous roles\, Jennifer worked across the Great Lakes advocacy community to establish and advocate for sustainable funding for the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative\, uplift community voices impacted by PFAS pollution\, and to empower women across the conservation and environmental communities to grow as leaders. Inspired by George Jackson in the Sun of Palestine (2015\, West Bank) and Sur les Traces du Black Panther: Kwame Ture/Stokely Carmichael (2018\, Guinea)\, this presentation examines the contrast between revolutionary solidarity grounded in praxis and the contemporary commodification of solidarity as mere rhetoric.\n   \n   Revisiting the revolutionary theories of George Jackson and Kwame Ture\, it reframes Black internationalism and Black-Palestinian solidarity while addressing the erasure of Black Palestinians. By moving beyond liberal and neoliberal co-optations\, the discussion highlights how historical commitments to solidarity can inform and inspire resistance today. Correspondence between Jackson and Fatma Bernawi further illuminates the revolutionary principles that continue to resonate.\n   \n   Greg Thomas\, a native of Southeast Washington\, D.C.\, teaches Black Studies and Literature at Tufts and Howard Universities. He is the author of The Sexual Demon of Colonial Power and Hip-Hop Revolution in the Flesh and co-editor of Word Hustle: Critical Essays on Donald Goines.\n   \n   As founding editor of PROUD FLESH: An e-Journal for the Critical Study of Black Culture\, Thomas has published extensively and guest-edited for CR: The New Centennial Review and Black Camera. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Neuroscience of Speech and Language: From Development to Disorders
DESCRIPTION:Speech and language acquisition involves the rapid growth and strengthening of neural connections in areas responsible for processing sounds and words. The brain’s plasticity during early years allows children to easily acquire language through interaction and exposure. Critical periods of development ensure that the foundational skills for speech and language are built efficiently\, leading to better communication abilities as children grow. In this talk\, Dr. Chang will provide an overview of how children acquire speech and language\, and what may go awry in this process\, leading to speech and language disorders.\n\nSoo-Eun Chang\, Ph.D.\, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Michigan. She received her MS degree and clinical training at Vanderbilt University\, her Ph.D. in Speech and Hearing Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign\, and trained as a postdoctoral research fellow at the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Chang’s research program focuses on examining the functional neuroanatomical mechanisms supporting speech motor control\, and neural bases of developmental stuttering.

It promotes drawing parallels between the prison experience in the region and worldwide\, highlights the intentionality of carceral systems\, and expands the conversation to include prison-impacted communities. DESCRIPTION:The act of embroidering and weaving designs onto cloth is deeply rooted in Ukrainian traditions. Embellished clothing (sorochky)\, ritual cloths (rushnyky)\, and household textiles accompany a person from birth until death\, punctuating important life events in between. A variety of embroidery patterns are used throughout Ukraine\; some stitches are universally known\, while others are region-specific. DESCRIPTION:The pieces here are from a large series of works made over the last several years. In them\, Ross explores humor and personal meaning through absurd juxtapositions of pairs of wildly varied images. Each single image is stripped of its original context (be it\, for example\, a history book\, an instruction manual\, or a magazine advertisement)\, placed on a white background like some kind of specimen\, and presented afresh with a new “companion image.” These companion images confront\, contrast and converse with each other\, and thereby build new relationships\, narratives\, jokes\, and contexts.\n\nAndy Ross grew up in Macomb County\, and has been making art in various mediums since the 1970s. He received a BFA degree from College for Creative Studies\, and an MFA degree from University of Michigan. He has taught photography\, art\, and web design at colleges in California and Michigan. His photographs and collages have been exhibited in schools\, galleries\, and museums across the United States.

DESCRIPTION:This body of work represents a playful exploration of form\, color\, and scale through the lens of cellular shapes. Inspired by the complex patterns of biological life\, the pieces are a celebration of growth\, transformation\, and the joy of experimentation. The use of non-precious materials\, such as wood balls and paint\, allowed for a liberating approach to composition and color\, while the spherical forms and circular panels evoke the look of petri dishes—symbolizing both scientific curiosity and organic development.\nBorn in Detroit\, Elizabeth is a multidisciplinary artist and mother based in the metro Detroit area\, where she works from a studio in her home. With a background in bench jewelry\, her earlier work focused on studio jewelry and was represented by Galerie Noel Guyomarc’h in Montreal.\nElizabeth’s work has been exhibited both locally and internationally. She holds a BA in Jewelry Design\, with First Class Honours\, from Central Saint Martins in London\, a BFA from the University of Michigan\, and an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art\, where she specialized in Metalsmithing and Architecture. Her diverse practice spans jewelry\, sculpture\, and installation\, blending materials and techniques to explore themes of production\, growth\, transformation\, and organic form.

DESCRIPTION:*On The World With The World* is an exhibition of 40 artworks by over 24 artists from the Progressive Art Studio Collective (PASC) program. PASC is the first progressive art studio and exhibition program in Detroit and Wayne County dedicated to supporting artists with developmental disabilities and mental health differences to advance artistic practices and build individual careers in the art and design fields.\n\nThis exhibition introduces the PASC program\, and the wide range of styles and ways of working that drive this community of artists\, to the Ann Arbor community. The exhibition is hung salon style\, referencing the communal character of the Osterman Common Room as a social gathering space. It intends to bring engaged people together for conversation on art\, disabilities\, and questions of access in the art world.\n\nPASC embraces the philosophy that creating an artwork is an expressive and communal act whereby an individual communicates their unique perspective on the world with the world.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Red Summer: Racial Violence in the American Landscape\, 1917-1923
DESCRIPTION:The Red Summer portfolio represents the stories of various locations in the American landscape where racial violence (often characterized as “Race Wars” at the time) erupted between 1917 and 1923. These years of conflict reveal several aspects of racial anxiety that inform our contemporary experience\, including\, though not limited to\; racism\, fear of violent black revolt\, lynching\, poverty\, mass incarceration\, and competition for employment. The term “Red Summer” was first used by James Weldon Johnson to describe the violent attacks against black communities during 1919.  \n\nThough the events of the early twentieth century seem to be remote and fading apparitions of an American past\; my work is concerned with the power and influence of our shared historical narrative upon the present. The upheaval of Red Summer occurred approximately fifty years after the American Civil War\, fifty years before the height of the Civil Rights Era\, and three centuries after the first enslaved Africans arrived in English colonies that would become the United States. \n\nThe project combines photographs of the contemporary landscape made at or near the site of racial conflict with fragmented selections of contemporaneous newspaper reporting (1917-1923). In many cases\, the newsprint images include the surrounding stories or advertisements. The combination of the landscape photograph and the reproduction of newspaper fragments (which invade the contemporary with a narrative from the past)\, is a rupture and a conversation on the timeline between past and present.

DESCRIPTION:In Winter 2025\, the Lane Hall exhibit space will feature a portraiture series titled Redefining the Crown showcasing the powerful stories of six Black breast cancer survivors.\n\nBased on a photo essay by U-M Faculty Versha Pleasant (MD/MPH) and Ava Purkiss (PhD) in Medicine at Michigan\, this exhibition examines the cultural and personal significance of hair within Black communities\, particularly through the lens of breast cancer treatment and recovery. The term \"crown\" is deeply symbolic in Black culture\, signifying beauty\, strength\, and identity. The featured photo essay by photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks.\n\nThrough their narratives and portraits\, the exhibit examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy\, inviting the audience to witness their stories with radical empathy. It explores the cultural pride and personal identity intricately tied to their hair\, and how these elements are redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThe exhibit will be on view from January 21\, 2025 to August 8\, 2025. This exhibition is presented with support from IRWG\, the Department of Women's and Gender Studies\, and Michigan Medicine. \n\nLocated on the first floor of Lane Hall (204 S. DESCRIPTION:The leaf surface is a dynamic landscape where tiny\, specialized structures help plants interact with the world around them. Let’s bring this world into view! Join us for an exhibit that highlights the complex and often beautiful anatomy of leaves from the Matthaei collection. Plants throughout the conservatory will be paired with microscope photographs and micro-CT scans that illustrate the otherwise invisible structures that protect leaves from chewing insects\, absorb (or repel!) water\, and even recruit “bodyguards”. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. DESCRIPTION:Impossible Conversations is an exhibition and film installation by artists and filmmakers\, Pratāp Rughani and David Chung. The film centers a seemingly impossible dialogue between Arno Michaelis\, a former Neo-Nazi gang founder and Pardeep Kaleka\, son of the Sikh Temple President\, Satwant Singh Kaleka\, one of seven people killed in the shooting attack at the Oak Creek Sikh Temple (Gurudwara) by a white supremacist in 2012. \n \nThe film installation explores what happens when – for over a decade – Pardeep and Arno committed to a path of restorative communication - to listen deeply and connect with what motivates each other in the genesis and aftermath of atrocity.\nHow does healing begin? From the toxic polarization\, division and extreme racist violence that resulted in one of the worst mass shootings at a religious site in American history\, Pardeep insists that complete healing must eventually be a collective process for all\, to liberate both sides.\nAt Stamps Gallery\, Impossible Conversations will be accompanied by a dialogue and research room as well as photomurals that expand on the themes of restorative justice\, gun violence\, and how to sustain difficult dialogues to combat extremism and toxic polarization. \nExhibition curated by Srimoyee Mitra. Impossible Conversations has been supported in part by the Arts Research: Incubation &amp\; Acceleration (ARIA) program of The University of Michigan Office of the Vice President Research and the Arts Initiative\, Institute of Firearm Prevention Pilot Grant\, the Stamps School of Art and Design\, and the University of the Arts London. \nExhibition Programs\nAn Opening Screening\, Talkback\, and Reception will take place on Friday\, January 17\, 2025 from 5:30 – 8 p.m.\, and a Symposium will take place on Saturday\, January 18\, 2025 from 10 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. \nAbout the Artists\nPratāp Rughani is a writer and non-fiction filmmaker. The ethics of giving sustained attention to the experiences of marginalized\, excluded or sometimes reviled “others” and bringing them in relationship to the broader culture is central to his research into ethics of storytelling and the development of “Restorative Narrative.”\nRughani writes widely on the ethics of creative practice\, serves on several editorial Boards\, has won awards for film\, teaching\, and research\, and is Professor of Documentary Practices at the University of the Arts\, London.\nDavid Chung is an acclaimed visual artist and filmmaker. His work focuses on how identities are shaped in immigrant communities and the challenges of refugees as they integrate into new homelands.\nChung has exhibited his drawings\, prints\, and video installations at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts\, the Asia Society\, the Walker Arts Center\, the Studio Museum in Harlem\, the Gwangju Biennale\, the Smithsonian Institution\, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art\, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Chung has received a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship and the National Board Film Board of Canada's Award for Best Documentary Film. He was the 2013 Kim Koo Visiting Professor at Harvard University. \nChung is a professor and the director of the MFA Graduate Program at the University of Michigan Penny W. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Michelle Hinojosa: Logcabins
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery commissioned Michelle Hinojosa (MFA\, 2023) to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the Gallery. Hinojosa has created log cabin quilts to adorn the columns in front of Stamps Gallery. The log cabin quilts traditionally represent the warm hearth at the center of a home. This installation reflects on the interplay between home\, placemaking\, labor\, and intergenerational memories of migration. Rather than quilting cotton designed to softly embrace the body\, these quilts are sewn from outdoor grade\, UV-resistant polyester. The quilt is an ode to Hinojosa’s grandmother who illegally crossed the US/Mexico border holding her babies and her quilts. As she and her family drove across the United States to work in the fields of the Salinas Valley\, the quilts offered a safe space for her and her family. Hinojosa celebrates their resilience to her grandmother and elders while also drawing attention to precarity and violence experienced by refugees and migrants crossing the US-Mexico border in our present today.\nArtist’s bio:\nMichelle Inez Hinojosa is an artist\, educator\, and researcher whose work is informed by Indigenous and Latine/x/a/o studies. Born and raised in Texas\, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in both drawing and painting and art education with a minor in art history at the University of North Texas. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. She works with quilting\, bead weaving\, embroidery\, jewelry\, transparent film installations\, painting\, ceramics\, and sculpture to honor and explore the history of migration in her family and humanize the current discourse around migration still occurring at the southern border. Alongside her artwork she maintains a writing practice to re-story\, re-make\, and re-claim the often subordinated narratives of Latinx\, Chicanx\, Mexican\, and Texican peoples. \n\nRecently\, Hinojosa was named an inaugural Creative Careers Artist in Residence at the University of Michigan\, she has also attended residencies at Mildred's Lane (Pennsylvania)\, Anderson Ranch Art Center (Aspen\, CO) and The Cedars Union (Dallas\, TX).

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:One Step Back and Two Steps Forward – Cleaving Bonds to Trigger Alkene Addition Reactions
DESCRIPTION:My seminar presents catalysts for the addition of C–H\, C–C\, & C–N bonds across alkenes. Our general approach is to cleave these bonds with transition metal catalysts to trigger the addition reactions. Our mechanistic work in this area elucidated the role of Lewis base and Lewis acid additives in these reaction through a combination of initial rate kinetics\, natural abundance 13C isotope effects\, control experiments\, and crossover studies. In alkene aminocyanation\, Lewis acid reactivity can dominate the reaction – in some cases acting as the sole catalytic agent. For cyanoamidation\, we established a linear solvation energy relationship between enantioselectivity and solvent polarity through construction of a Kamlet-Taft multiparameter solvatochromic equation.  Our mechanism-focused approach paved the way for the application of cyanoamidation in the total synthesis of the alkaloid (+)-eburnamonine.  I will present our lab’s work on applying these lessons to the madangamine alkaloids via a palladium-catalyzed C–C bond functionalization cascade reaction.  Finally\, I will present our re-entry into the popular area of alkene hydroacylation. We have developed chiral 2-aminopyridine co-catalysts capable of useful levels of enantioinduction in Rh-catalyzed hydroacylation.  Catalyst development and applications in synthesis will be presented.

Once you've registered\, joining information will be sent to your email. \n\nRegister for the Zoom webinar at: https://myumi.ch/r84Ae.\n   \n   In November 1896\, a newspaper reported that Prince Komatsu\, a member of the imperial family\, had viewed a photographic dance performance on Thomas Edison’s Kinetoscope\, featuring a moving image titled *The Dance of Geisha* from Kyoto’s Gion\, which was later exhibited in Kobe as part of a sideshow before touring Osaka and Tokyo. Recognized as Japan’s earliest publicly exhibited moving image\, its recording and exhibition circumstances remain unknown. This talk examines the cultural and historical significance of the film—now accessible on platforms like the Library of Congress under the title Imperial Japanese Dance—while exploring how this “unknown dance” became framed as a geisha dance and investigating the performers’ origins in the 1890s.\n   \n   Mariko Okada is the 2024–25 CJS Visiting Scholar and a professor at the Faculty of Humanities\, J. F. Oberlin University in Tokyo\, Japan\, and she previously served as the CJS Toyota Visiting Professor in 2012–13. Her research focuses on traditional Japanese performance\, particularly geisha practices in Kyoto and the experiences of Japanese female performers in the United States during the Meiji period. She is the author of *The Birth of Kyōmai: Inoue-ryu Dance in Nineteenth-Century Kyoto\, Japan* (written in Japanese)\, which won the 2013 Suntory Prize for Social Sciences and Humanities\, and has contributed to several English publications\, including “Before Making Heritage: Internationalisation of Geisha in the Meiji Period” in *Making Japanese Heritage* (2009)\, “Interlude Nihonbuyo: Classical Dance” in *History of Japanese Theatre* (2016)\, and “Masking Japanese Militarism as a Dream of Sino-Japanese Friendship: Miyako Odori Performances in the 1930s” in *Corporeal Politics: Dancing East Asia* (2020).\n   \n   *This lecture is made possible with the generous support of the U.S. Department of Education Title VI grant.*\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at cjsevents@umich.edu. DESCRIPTION:Musicology PhD student Eric Whitmer performs on the Charles Baird Carillon\, an instrument of 53 bronze bells located inside the Burton Memorial Tower. The largest bell\, which strikes the hour\, weighs 12 tons\, while the smallest bell\, 4½ octaves above\, weighs just 15 pounds.\n\nThirty-minute recitals are performed on the Charles Baird Carillon at noon every weekday that classes are in session\, followed by visitor Q&A with the carillonist. The bell chamber may be accessed via a combination of elevator and stairs. Take the elevator to the highest floor possible (floor 8)\, and then climb two flights of stairs (39 steps) to the bell chamber (floor 10). Hearing protection earmuffs are provided for visitors. Be prepared to walk on ice and snow in the bell chamber during winter. Built in 1936\, the Charles Baird Carillon is not ADA accessible. Visitors with mobility concerns are invited to visit the Lurie Carillon.

DESCRIPTION:Jong-Shi Pang is the Epstein Family Chair and Distinguished Professor of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University of Southern California. He is a world leader in optimization and computational methods. His research focuses on the mathematical modeling and analysis of a wide range of complex engineering and economic systems\, with a focus on operations research\, single-agent optimization\, equilibrium programming\, noncooperative game theory\, and constrained dynamical systems. Prof. Pang is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and a Fellow of the Institute for Operations Research and Management Science (INFORMS). Numerous awards have recognized his research.\n\nThis talk introduces the topic of Heaviside composite optimization and briefly covers its many facets: breadth in modeling\, roles in old and new applications\, theory of optimizers and stationary solutions\, bridge with discrete optimization\, and the progressive integer programming method.   By definition\, a univariate Heaviside function is the (discontinuous) indicator of an interval.  By its name\, a Heaviside composite function is the composition of a Heaviside function with a continuous multivariate function that may be nonconvex and nondifferentiable.  While very natural in modeling many physical phenomena\, a Heaviside composite optimization problem\, possibly with Heaviside composite functional constraints\, has never been formally studied. DESCRIPTION:\"Understanding Solar Flare Magnetic Reconnection Dynamics and X-Ray Emission Variability through Flare Ribbons Observations\"\n\nIn the standard solar flare model flare ribbons are the locations in which flare energy deposits in the footpoints of newly reconnected flare magnetic loops. This talk will address 2 recent projects that use flare ribbon observations to study the dynamics of magnetic reconnection during flares. In the first part of the talk\, we will discuss the recent finding of studying 73 flares with co-temporal quasi-periodic pulsations (QPPs) in the reconnected flux rate\, estimated from flare ribbon observations\, and hard X-ray emission (HXR). The second part of the talk will focus on recent developments in quantitative tracking flare ribbon substructure\, and the diagnostic potential of these substructures. Our result suggests the plasmoid instability as a suitable mechanism to explain the QPPs in the reconnection rate and HXR emission\, and the formation of flare ribbon substructure due to current sheet fragmentation.

DESCRIPTION:Many datasets in modern applications - from cell gene expression and images to shapes and text documents - are naturally interpreted as probability measures\, distributions\, histograms\, or point clouds. This perspective motivates the development of learning algorithms that operate directly in the space of probability measures. However\, this space presents unique challenges: it is nonlinear and infinite-dimensional. Fortunately\, it possesses a natural Riemannian-type geometry which enables meaningful learning algorithms.\n\nThis talk will provide an introduction to the space of probability measures and present approaches to unsupervised\, supervised\, and manifold learning within this framework. We will examine temporal evolutions on this space\, including flows involving stochastic gradient descent and trajectory inference\, with applications to analyzing gene expression in single cells. The proposed algorithms are furthermore demonstrated in pattern recognition tasks in imaging and medical applications.

DESCRIPTION:The Pella Urban Dynamics Project is a multidisciplinary field project being undertaken at the ancient city of Pella\, in northern Greece. A major objective is to understand how diachronic changes in Pella’s status in the regional and trans-regional contexts affected the city and its residents. The project explores the location\, form\, and extent of the settlement before\, during\, and after the creation of the Hellenistic city that benefited from the wealth created during the conquests of the kings of Macedon. At the same time\, it investigates how the lives of some of the population changed\, including during the period of decline in the late 2nd to early 1st century BCE\, when this region was annexed by Rome. This presentation will focus on preliminary results obtained from three years of field survey and excavation that highlight the changing status of the city.\n\nDavid Stone and Lisa Nevett (U-M Department of Classical Studies) are co-directors of the Pella Urban Dynamics Project (https://sites.lsa.umich.edu/pella/). \n\nThis event will take place in Room 125 of the Kelsey Museum’s Newberry Hall. DESCRIPTION:Stacey Kirby is a queer\, white-bodied\, self-appointed civil servant and interdisciplinary artist known for creating participatory installations that explore themes of identity\, community\, and civil rights. Through interactive performances and immersive environments\, she invites audiences to reflect on their roles in civic and social engagement. Kirby's work takes place in traditional art spaces and alternative public spaces such as restrooms\, on billboards and at protests.\nAs the recipient of the 2025 Roman J. Witt Artist-in-Residence Award\, Kirby will collaborate with the campus community to create a new iteration of The Bureau of Personal Belonging\, reflecting the current cultural\, societal\, and political landscape. The Bureau\, a series of performances set within site-specific art installations\, utilizes bureaucratic forms\, postures\, and language in vintage office environments to engage participants and community performers in exploring questions of civil authority. With a history spanning two decades\, including over 200 performances\, involving 300 community performers\, and engaging 10\,000 participants\, Kirby’s work employs humor and satire to foster an on-going dialogue about identity\, community\, and human rights.\nKirby is a recipient of numerous awards\, including the ArtPrize 8 Juried Grand Prize and an NC Arts Council Artist Fellowship for Visual Artists\; has been nominated for the United States Artists Award and the Anonymous Was A Woman Award\; and was a finalist for the 1858 Prize. Kirby has also been awarded artist residencies at the Headlands Center for the Arts\, Barton College\, the Atlantic Center for the Arts\, the Gibbes Museum of Art\, and was a visiting artist at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Her work is represented in the Ackland Art Museum at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill\, Duke University Rare Book Collection\, and other private collections. Kirby has a dual degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in Studio Art and Journalism and Mass Communication. Kirby serves her community on the Nasher Museum of Art's Friends Board at Duke University and as a member of the Scrap Exchange Board of Directors. \nPresented in partnership with Stamps Gallery and Roman J. Seats are offered on a first come\, first served basis\; please arrive early to secure a spot.\n\nTyehimba Jess is the author of two books of poetry\, *Leadbelly* and *Olio*. Olio won the 2017 Pulitzer Prize\, the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award\, The Midland Society Author’s Award in Poetry\, and received an Outstanding Contribution to Publishing Citation from the Black Caucus of the American Library Association.  It was also nominated for the National Book Critics Circle Award\, the PEN Jean Stein Book Award\, and the Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award.  Leadbelly was a winner of the 2004 National Poetry Series. The Library Journal and Black Issues Book Review both named it one of the “Best Poetry Books of 2005.”\n\nJess\, a Cave Canem and NYU Alumni\, received a 2004 Literature Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts\, and was a 2004–2005 Winter Fellow at the Provincetown Fine Arts Work Center. Jess is also a veteran of the 2000 and 2001 Green Mill Poetry Slam Team\, and won a 2000–2001 Illinois Arts Council Fellowship in Poetry\, the 2001 Chicago Sun-Times Poetry Award\, and a 2006 Whiting Fellowship. He presented his poetry at the 2011 TedX Nashville Conference and won a 2016 Lannan Literary Award in Poetry. He received a Guggenheim fellowship in 2018. Jess is a Professor of English at College of Staten Island.  \n\nJess' fiction and poetry have appeared in many journals\, as well as anthologies such as *Angles of Ascent: A Norton Anthology of Contemporary African American Poetry*\, *Beyond The Frontier: African American Poetry for the Twenty-First Century*\, *Role Call: A Generational Anthology of Social and Political Black Literature and Art*\, *Bum Rush the Page: A Def Poetry Jam*\, *Power Lines: Ten Years of Poetry from Chicago's Guild Complex*\, and *Slam: The Art of Performance Poetry*.\n\nFor any questions about the event or to share accommodation needs\, please email kimjulie@umich.edu--we are eager to help ensure this event is inclusive to you.
