For Black women in particular\, hair has and continues to be tied to ethnic identity and a history of self-determination\, social justice\, and survival. Thus\, chemotherapy-induced hair loss is a devastating event for Black patients who are also more likely to be diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer subtypes necessitating chemotherapy\, carrying a 40% increased risk of dying from breast cancer.\n\nRedefining the ‘crown’: Approaching chemotherapy-induced alopecia among Black patients with breast cancer” started as a manuscript published in the scientific journal Cancer. But the work could not stop there. “Redefining the Crown” then metamorphosed into a photo essay project aimed at exploring the breast cancer journeys of six Black women and their experiences with hair loss due to chemotherapy. Though the project centers the experience of Black women\, we also acknowledge that breast cancer and chemotherapy-induced alopecia impact individuals of all genders. While the goal is to illuminate the unique stories of Black women who are affected uncommonly by this common disease\, the project is also a call to action regarding the disproportionate breast cancer-related mortality facing Black communities.\n\nIn this portraiture series\, photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks. We compile a novel database of contracting relationships among employers\, brokers\, and insurers in New York State. Exploiting variations in commission schedules\, we document two market distortions: First\, brokers exhibit traditional agency frictions\, steering employers towards more financially lucrative products. Second\, commission levels affect ex-ante insurer-broker networks and\, in turn\, insurers' competitive pressure\, leading to anti-competitive distortions. We develop and estimate a structural model of employer insurance demand\, insurer pricing\, and formation of broker-insurer contracting networks. We use the model to study a commission-cap counterfactual. A one-percentage-point cap reduces broker-induced steering and raises employer surplus by 3\%\, but the resulting reduction in insurer competition lowers surplus by over 6\%\, yielding a net decline of about 3\%. We also explore the impacts of fiduciary duties and network regulations for insurance brokers. Its High Latitude Imaging Survey (HLIS) will provide powerful tests of cosmological models through sensitive measurements of cosmic shear\, galaxy-galaxy lensing (GGL)\, and galaxy clustering. As a member of the Roman HLIS Cosmology Project Infrastructure Team (PIT)\, my work spans both Shear & Clustering Measurement (SCM) and Cosmological Parameter Inference Pipeline (CPIP). In this talk\, I will mainly talk about our Fisher forecasts of cosmological parameter constraints from combinations of the three probes mentioned above\, carried out as part of the HLIS PIT's Data Challenge 1 (DC1). We find good agreement between Fisher analysis and Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) analysis of the DC1 baseline data vector\, and we exploit the flexibility of Fisher analysis to investigate varied priors on cosmological parameters and on nuisance parameters describing unknown biases in photometric redshifts or shear measurements. I will also talk about my work on optimal reconstruction of Roman images (which is actually the most essential part of my current research). As an incoming postdoc at UMich\, I look forward to learning more about DESI (among other things) in the next few years. During this period\, the Information Research Department (IRD)\, the British covert propaganda department hidden deep within the Foreign Office\, established a special unit in Singapore innocuously named the Southeast Asia Monitoring Unit (SEAMU) to spearhead a disinformation campaign to destabilize Indonesia in hopes of ushering in a more friendly regime in Jakarta and putting a premature end to Konfronstasi – Indonesia’s low-level border war waged against Malaysia. With the collaboration of the American\, Australian\, and Malaysian governments\, the British psychological warfare campaign not only flooded the Indonesian market with black propaganda leaflets and radio broadcasts\, but deftly manipulated the international news circuit to spread Indonesian Army propaganda across the globe to help provide legitimacy to Army claims and help mollify international opinion of the mass murder of up to a million nominally leftist Indonesian citizens.\n \n Chris Hulshof is a historian of empire\, covert operations\, and international power projection in Southeast Asia during the twentieth century. The Keller Group applies those questions to both artificial and biological membranes. In simple membranes\, enormous progress has been made in understanding large-scale\, liquid-liquid phase separation in membranes with as few as three components: a sterol\, lipid with ordered chains\, and a lipid with disordered chains. How low can we go? Are three components really necessary? Our group set out to discover a truly minimal system with only two components. Inspired by reports that sterols interact closely with lipids with ordered chains\, we found that phase separation can robustly occur in bilayers in which a sterol and lipid are replaced by a single\, joined sterol–lipid. Next\, we turned our attention to natural membranes. Micron-scale liquid-liquid phase separation occurs in vacuole membranes of budding yeast (S. cerevisiae) at their growth temperature when the yeast switch from the log stage of growth to the stationary stage. The membrane phases are functionally important – they play a role in enabling the yeast to survive periods of stress. We found that yeast actively regulate this phase transition to hold the membrane transition of their membrane ~15C above the yeast growth temperature. They must do so by changing their lipidome. When yeast enter the stationary stage (and their membranes phase separate)\, the fraction of one lipid type (PC-lipids) doubles\, and lipids of that type have higher melting temperatures\, which is consistent with phase separation occurring in membranes containing a sterol\, lipids with ordered chains\, and lipids with disordered chains. Making progress on everyday goals is often unsteady\, in that each unit of effort or time spent generates unequal results. In this research\, we examine how progress steadiness affects motivation. Although unsteady goal progress is common in both work and personal pursuits\, we suggest that goal pursuers find it discouraging. We hypothesize that even when goal progress is equal in amount and speed\, unsteady (vs. steady) progress decreases people’s sense of accomplishment and motivation to continue\, and increases quitting. Across a variety of goal domains\, findings from vignette experiments\, recall studies\, and real-time achievement tasks support these hypotheses. We also explore the mediating psychological variables and identify how manipulations targeting expectations about progress steadiness and encouraging a more abstract view of progress can reduce the negative effects of unsteady progress. This classic problem of perception in practical work situations was introduced in a study by Sumby & Pollack in 1954. Their question remains vital. Their account calibrated a perceiver’s ability to take advantage at every degree of intelligibility of an opportunity to view the talker. Today’s accounts often treat a perceiver as a deaf viewer bound to a blind listener\, puzzling through the differing phonetic impressions which result from such different sensory opportunities. Other accounts suppose that the incommensurate dimensions of visual and auditory sensation are recoded into a hypothetically common amodal metric to permit phonetic analysis. Almost every account derives its evidence from small inventories of test items presented under minimal uncertainty\, and consider the role of phoneme incidence to guide perceptual analysis. I will discuss new evidence from our laboratory of intelligible audiovisual presentation of speech\, using auditory and visual components which are unintelligible presented individually. Perceivers reported their impressions of the utterances in open set transcription under minimally constrained conditions of uncertainty. Such phenomena are consistent with primitive intersensory combination on which perceptual analysis of audiovisual speech might truly depend.\n\nAbout the speaker: \nRobert E. Remez is Professor of Psychology at Barnard College\, Columbia University\, where he has taught since 1980. A native New Yorker\, Robert was a Predoctoral Research Trainee at Haskins Laboratories in New Haven\, and received the doctorate in 1978 from the University of Connecticut. He received the Bachelor of Arts degree in 1971 from Brandeis University. At Barnard\, he has held an Ann Whitney Olin Chair\, has been Chair of the Departments of Psychology and Sociology\, and is Chair of the Columbia University Seminar on Language & Cognition. He is co-editor of both the first and second edition of the Handbook of Speech Perception\, and was Associate Editor of the journals Perception & Psychophysics and the Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance. They proved that the associated double Edelman– Greene coefficients\, the double Schur expansion of these functions\, are positive\, a result later refined by Anderson. They further asked for a combinatorial proof of this positivity. We provide the first such proof\, together with a combinatorial formula that manifests the finer positivity established by Anderson. Our formula is built from two combinatorial models: bumpless pipedreams and increasing chains in the Bruhat order. The proof relies on three key ingredients: a correspondence between these two models\, a natural subdivision of bumpless pipedreams\, and a symmetry property of increasing chains. This talk is based on joint work with Jack Chou. Penta) DESCRIPTION:We study a framework for robust mechanism design with multiple agents that accommodates various degrees of robustness with respect to agents' beliefs\, and encompasses both the belief-free and Bayesian robustness criteria. For general \emph{belief restrictions}\, we characterize the set of incentive compatible direct transfer mechanisms in general environments with interdependent values. Based on a \emph{first-order approach}\, we obtain a design principle to attain incentive compatibility via `belief-based' terms. In environments that satisfy a property of \emph{generalized independence}\, our results imply a \emph{robust} version of \emph{revenue equivalence}. Extending the notion of correlated information\, we introduce a notion of \emph{comovement} between types and beliefs\, defined based on a moment condition. Under comovement\, we characterize the full set of `belief-based' terms. Based on this\, we show that from Bayesian settings the following result extends to this fairly mild restriction on beliefs: any allocation rule can be implemented\, even in environments without single-crossing or monotonicity. However\, full rent extraction need not follow. Information rents typically remain\, and they decrease monotonically as the robustness requirement is weakened. The workshop also introduces participants to on-campus resources and provides knowledge on how sexual misconduct can unfold in graduate-specific settings.The ERC workshop uses small-group circles intended to promote active reflection and space to build community. The procedure of circles is introduced at the beginning of the workshop in order to help participants get used to the process\, which they do through a circle for introductions and value-sharing for the workshop space. These circles depict various\, realistic scenarios related to sexual misconduct within the graduate community. The circle process allows circle members to process the monologues\, reflect on complexities with identity and power dynamics within them\, name potential barriers to intervention\, and think of various ways in which they might respond if faced with similar situations. The circles provide a way to foster collective building of ideas\, where participants learn from one another and all input is equally valued. Participants are encouraged to share but can always pass if desired\, creating an environment where participation is open but not forced. What were the temperatures of these early oceans? Oxygen isotope compositions of different sediments have been used extensively to answer this question. The δ¹⁸O values of Archean sediments are strikingly lower than their younger equivalents\, but interpretations of these results are extremely varied. High ocean temperatures\, low δ¹⁸O values of the early oceans\, or simply massive diagenesis of the sediments over the billions of ensuing years have all been considered. There is no consensus between the different camps. Here we use a completely different approach\, using the triple oxygen isotope composition of mantle eclogites to define the δ¹⁸O value of the Archean ocean. Mantle eclogites are subducted and metamorphosed equivalents of oceanic crust. Unlike sediments\, which are subject to surficial alteration over billions of years\, subducted ocean crust becomes metamorphosed and then isolated – isotopically ‘frozen’ – for billions of years. We find that the range of triple oxygen isotope values of fresh altered oceanic crust and those of Archean eclogites are nearly identical. Given that the temperatures of hydrothermal alteration have not changed through time\, and the isotopic composition of the mantle has not changed through time\, then the similar triple isotope range of modern and Archean metamorphosed oceanic crust indicates an unchanging ocean isotope composition over the last 3 Ga. Eliminating the oxygen isotope composition of the Archean ocean as a variable allows for better estimates of Earth’s early surficial conditions. He describes himself as a composer of “music with repetitive structures” and says that “If I’m to be remembered for anything\, it will probably be for the piano music\, because people can play it.”\n\nPhilip Glass conceived his collection of etudes as a set of 20 works for solo piano written to improve his own performance technique. His most personal body of work is a self-portrait of a life’s practice\, representing some of the most intimate and inventive music of Glass’s oeuvre. For Black women in particular\, hair has and continues to be tied to ethnic identity and a history of self-determination\, social justice\, and survival. Thus\, chemotherapy-induced hair loss is a devastating event for Black patients who are also more likely to be diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer subtypes necessitating chemotherapy\, carrying a 40% increased risk of dying from breast cancer.\n\nRedefining the ‘crown’: Approaching chemotherapy-induced alopecia among Black patients with breast cancer” started as a manuscript published in the scientific journal Cancer. But the work could not stop there. “Redefining the Crown” then metamorphosed into a photo essay project aimed at exploring the breast cancer journeys of six Black women and their experiences with hair loss due to chemotherapy. Though the project centers the experience of Black women\, we also acknowledge that breast cancer and chemotherapy-induced alopecia impact individuals of all genders. While the goal is to illuminate the unique stories of Black women who are affected uncommonly by this common disease\, the project is also a call to action regarding the disproportionate breast cancer-related mortality facing Black communities.\n\nIn this portraiture series\, photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks.
