Medicine, in particular, has significant upside potential with AI\u2014with hospitals closing, a shortage of physicians and other medical professionals, and an instrinsically difficult domain, AI has a unique opportunity to upskill practice, bringing better care and better training to everyone. This talk will explore the problem, potential value, and early methods in upskilling medical practitioners along two axes. First, I will describe how visual AI methods are already impacting the cardiothoracic surgical domain via technical and non-technical assessment for more objective training and review. Second, I will describe how interactive, physically-grounded AI guidance can upskill medical practitioners and bring state of the art care into rural settings, which are among the most challenging settings for healthcare delivery. Ultimately, this talk will provide concrete evidence of the potential AI has in upskilling medical practice.\r\n\r\nMeet Jason Corso:\r\nDr. Jason Corso is Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and Robotics at the University of Michigan and Co-Founder \/ CSO of the AI startup Voxel51. He received his PhD and MSE degrees at The Johns Hopkins University in 2005 and 2002, respectively, and the BS Degree with honors from Loyola College In Maryland in 2000, all in Computer Science. He is the recipient of a U Michigan EECS Outstanding Achievement Award 2018, Google Faculty Research Award 2015, the Army Research Office Young Investigator Award 2010, National Science Foundation CAREER award 2009, SUNY Buffalo Young Investigator Award 2011, a member of the 2009 DARPA Computer Science Study Group, and a recipient of the Link Foundation Fellowship in Advanced Simulation and Training 2003. Now, deepfakes have changed the game, creating images, videos, and audio recordings making it appear that people have said and done things that they have not, creating deception, confusion, and cynicism. Solutions exist on the supply and demand side, from government regulation to public education, if we can overcome the polarization that causes some politicians to value controversies over solutions.\r\n\r\nMeet Barbara McQuade:\r\nBarbara McQuade is a professor from practice at the University of Michigan Law School, where she teaches courses in criminal law, criminal procedure, and national security. She is also a legal analyst for NBC News and MSNBC. She is the author of the New York Times bestseller, Attack from Within: How Disinformation is Sabotaging America.\r\n\r\nFrom 2010 to 2017, Ms. McQuade served as the U.S Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan. Her office brought cases involving public corruption, terrorism, white collar crime, and civil rights violations, among others. Ms. McQuade was appointed by President Barack Obama, and was the first woman to serve in her position.\r\n\r\nBefore becoming U.S. Attorney, Ms. McQuade was an Assistant U.S. Attorney in Detroit for 12 years, serving as Deputy Chief of the National Security Unit. Before joining the U.S. Attorney\u2019s Office, Ms. McQuade practiced law at the firm of Butzel Long in Detroit from 1993 to 1998, and served as a law clerk to Hon. Bernard A. Friedman on the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan from 1991 to 1993. She is a graduate of the University of Michigan (LSA \u201987 and Law \u201991). In this presentation, I will share examples from India and other developing nations that demonstrate how AI-powered solutions are being designed, implemented, and scaled to improve people\u2019s lives, in manner consistent with Kentaro\u2019s observation.\r\n\r\nEach project narrative will explore how specific problems were selected, the significant constraints and opportunities encountered during the design and development phases, and the approaches taken for implementation. The discussion will also address the challenges and possibilities associated with scaling these solutions.\r\n\r\nA central lesson from these experiences is the necessity for what I call \u201cradical collaboration.\u201d This involves bringing together a diverse group of contributors\u2014technology specialists, implementing organizations, subject matter experts, donors, and government agencies. Through these case studies, I will illustrate how such deep collaboration can turn AI-driven innovations into effective solutions for challenges in the developing world.\r\n\r\nMeet P. Anandan:\r\nA renowned researcher in computer vision and artificial intelligence, Anandan\u2019s career spans over 30 years in academia and industry in the US and in India. Padmanabhan Anandan was the CEO of Wadhwani Institute for Artificial Intelligence and independent not-for-profit Research Institute focused on developing AI based applications for Social Good and prior to that he was Vice President for Research at Adobe Systems. Anandan started his career at Microsoft as a principal researcher and head of the Interactive Visual Media Research group in Redmond, WA, in 1997. He then moved on to launch Microsoft Research India in December 2004 and became the managing director through 2014. He decided to return to Redmond in 2014 to lead the academic outreach group until 2016. Prior to Microsoft he was professor of AI at Yale University. And as AI adoption grows, so does its appetite for power.\r\n\r\nThis surge in energy demand drives up operational costs, puts pressure on already-congested power infrastructure, and makes it harder to bring AI to places without reliable electricity. These barriers are becoming major bottlenecks for deploying and scaling AI systems.\r\n\r\nThrough the ML Energy Initiative, we\u2019re working to address these challenges. We\u2019ve built tools to measure energy use, reduce waste, and design AI systems that are more efficient\u2014without sacrificing the accuracy of AI models. In this talk, I\u2019ll share how smarter energy use can make AI more affordable and accessible.\r\n\r\nMeet Mosharaf Chowdhury:\r\nMosharaf Chowdhury is an Associate Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, where he leads the SymbioticLab. His research focuses on making AI\/ML workloads more efficient, with a particular emphasis on reducing their energy consumption through the ML Energy Initiative. Major open-source projects from his team include Infiniswap, the first scalable memory disaggregation solution; FedScale, a planetary-scale AI\/ML platform; TPP, a tiered memory manager integrated into the Linux kernel (v5.18+); and Zeus, the first energy-optimal generative AI stack. Previously, Mosharaf invented the concept of coflows and was one of the original creators of Apache Spark. Molecules and the methods we use to create them are naturally represented as networks, allowing us not only to streamline drug and natural product discovery, but also to address broader ecological and public health problems.\r\n\r\nIn this seminar, I\u2019ll share our latest work on automated synthesis and the development of new amine-acid cross-coupling reactions, as well as how computer-assisted chemistry is illuminating pathways to medicines and natural products with applications ranging from human health to wildlife conservation. We are exploring combinatorially rich reaction space, where synthetic routes, reaction conditions, and bioactivity are deeply interconnected. Our interests span from pharmaceutical innovation to contemporary ecosystem health crises affecting endangered species and disease resistance.\r\n\r\nThis approach, which we call conservation chemistry, integrates molecular sciences with ecological and public health perspectives.
